CITY OF SUFFOLK - TOURISM FACILITIES

Suffolk Visitor Center & Pavilion

524 N Main Street 757-514-4130 visitsuffolkva.com Sun - Sat: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Overlooking the Nansemond River, the provincial Roman Revival style structure with its very tall Tuscan columns was an impressive site for early travelers arriving on the river. The former Nansemond County Courthouse (1840) is the third such structure on this site at the busy intersection of Main Street and Constance Road. Two previous courthouse buildings were destroyed by fires. During the Civil War, the courthouse was reportedly used as barracks for Union soldiers as the neighboring Mills Riddick home on its south side served as Union Army headquarters. The building remained in service as a courthouse until the completion of the Mills Godwin Courts Complex in 1998. Today, the building retains its commanding presence and historical significance as the Suffolk Visitor Center. The first floor provides an exhibit gallery highlighting the history of Suffolk and the Great Dismal Swamp, a greeting and information area, and a gift shop. The second floor houses municipal offices for the Department of Economic Development and Division of Tourism.

Seaboard Station Railroad Museum

326 N Main Street 757-514-4135 suffolktrainstation.com Sun - Sat: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Currently closed for renovations

This restored Main Street Station, originally built in 1885, has remained basically unchanged over the years and displays a 2-room HO-scale model of Suffolk in 1907 that was built by the Tidewater Division of the National Model Railroad Association. The Queen Anne style building is reminiscent of the Victorian age and has an interesting tower with a beautiful, walnut, spiral staircase. Many original features were saved and restored such as the doors, windows, coffered ceiling, fireplace and porch. The museum contains a collection of items including bells from steam locomotives, a light from a steam locomotive tender, cast iron and concrete signs, railroad lanterns, railroad tools, as well as a unique collection of smaller items, including silver items used in dining cars, office items used in the agent’s offices, and advertising items. The museum features railroad memorabilia and changing exhibits. The Museum is currently closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in late 2024.

MAKING A GREEN IMPACT TOGETHER!

Approximately 70 dedicated volunteers from ASEZ WAO teamed up with Suffolk Parks & Recreation for a tree-planting project at Sleepy Hole Park on Sunday, October 29, 2023. Securing a $5,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry, this project was made possible through collaborative efforts. The team planted 41 trees, including swamp white oak, black gum, eastern red cedar, and bald cypress—native species that promise to enhance the environment by providing shade, improving water quality, and fostering wildlife habitats. ASEZ WAO volunteers went above and beyond, contributing over $4,500 worth of volunteer time to this remarkable initiative. With an impressive average of 100 trees planted annually, Suffolk continues to blossom as a city dedicated to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The City of Suffolk’s commitment to a green future is evident as it proudly holds its designation as part of Tree City USA.

Event information is subject to change.

OF SUFFOLK SUFFOLK CLEANUP CITY OFCITY SUFFOLK - GREAT- GREAT SUFFOLK CLEANUP RECAP More than one thousand individuals from various groups representing all seven boroughs in Suffolk came together to clean up the city by participating in The Great Suffolk Cleanup on November 17-18, 2023. Organized by Keep Suffolk Beautiful, this two-day initiative aimed to motivate individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to choose a location in Suffolk and engage in litter cleanup. All participating volunteers were equipped with litter grabbers, safety vests, bags, and gloves. Suffolk City Manager Albert “Al” Moor, inspired by the success of the first Great Suffolk Cleanup in March 2023, once again permitted Suffolk City employees to participate. Over 450 City staff members from various departments responded to the call. Additionally, local businesses such as Dart Warehouse, Target Distribution Center, the COVE Veterinarian and Animal Hospital, Bon Secours, and Nansemond Brewing Station, along with local schools, sororities, and civic leagues, actively supported the initiative. Collaboratively, the participants filled 994 bags with trash and removed 388 tires. Mr. Moor was encouraged, stating, “The participation rate was truly impressive, with over 100 cleanup locations spread across the entire City. I am proud of the City employees who took part and grateful to all the other organizations and people who helped. Keeping our City clean is important to the community, and we look forward to continuing these efforts moving forward.” Participants reported their cleanup results to Public Works staff, who coordinated the collection of bags, tires, and debris through the Refuse division. Some unique items, including a satellite dish, passport, lawn mower, and kiddie pool were discovered during the cleanup. Thank you to all who participated in making this event a success!

While Mills Riddick’s contemporaries may have mocked his Greek Revival home when it was built in 1837, the house now stands as a beautiful reminder of the past and is one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions. The impressive structure features striking architectural details. The five frieze band windows across the front of the house are rarely seen in eastern Virginia. The front of the mansion is bricked in Flemish bond, and double chimneys rise from both ends of the stately historic landmark. Slender columns of the Greek Revival period frame the main entrance. The interior showcases intricately carved moldings and elaborate ceiling medallions throughout the house. Riddick’s Folly has four floors, 21 rooms, and 16 fireplaces. All four floors are open to the public. The building features elegantly furnished double parlors, a gentleman’s library, and adult and children’s bed chambers. Also open are the laundry, dining rooms, and kitchen. Registered with the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission and the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War, Riddick’s Folly served as headquarters for the Union Army.
