CITY OF SUFFOLK
IN THIS ISSUE
FROM THE CITY MANAGER
Greetings, fellow citizens! As City Manager, it is a pleasure to share information highlighting the multitude of family friendly events and activities taking place across our City this Fall and Winter, courtesy of our Library, Parks & Recreation, and Tourism Departments.
Soon, the crisp autumn air and fall season will be upon us, which provides a welcome opportunity to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Suffolk is home to some of the region’s most beautiful parks and glistening waterways, and before long they’ll be ablaze with the color of changing leaves. Suffolk’s four regional parks include Lone Star Lakes Park, Bennett’s Creek Park, Sleepy Hole Park, and Lake Meade Park, with all lending themselves to outdoor fun and exhilarating activities including archery, biking, canoeing, kayaking, disc golf, fishing, hiking, horseshoes, skateboarding, volleyball, and more!
The change of season also brings with it several accompanying celebrations and holidays. Downtown’s Taste of Suffolk Street Festival truly provides a “flavor” of what makes our City so special, with independent restaurants presenting their signature menu items in smaller portions at nominal prices, a Beer Garden showcasing local craft brews, eclectic art, live music, and children’s fun area … just to name a few!
Our Tour Program features a variety of guided tours, with something for history buffs, nature lovers, adventurers, and even for those folks seeking the “supernatural” side of Suffolk! You can follow a costumed guide through the shadows of historic Main Street discovering legends and “unexplained occurrences” by lantern light, or take a stroll with us on the Cedar Hill Cemetery Guided Tour. Don’t miss Friday Night Frights, which provides the opportunity to see classic movies on the big screen!

Overlooking the Nansemond River, the provincial Roman Revival style structure with its very tall Tuscan columns was an impressive site for early travelers arriving on the river. The former Nansemond County Courthouse (1840) is the third such structure on this site at the busy intersection of Main Street and Constance Road. Two previous courthouse buildings were destroyed by fires. During the Civil War, the courthouse was reportedly used as barracks for Union soldiers as the neighboring Mills Riddick home on its south side served as Union Army headquarters. The building remained in service as a courthouse until the completion of the Mills Godwin Courts Complex in 1998. Today, the building retains its commanding presence and historical significance as the Suffolk Visitor Center. The first floor provides an exhibit gallery highlighting the history of Suffolk and the Great Dismal Swamp, a greeting and information area, and a gift shop. The second floor houses municipal offices for the Department of Economic Development and Division of Tourism.

Sun - Sat: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
This restored Main Street Station, originally built in 1885, has remained basically unchanged over the years and displays a 2-room HO-scale model of Suffolk in 1907 that was built by the Tidewater Division of the National Model Railroad Association. The Queen Anne style building is reminiscent of the Victorian age and has an interesting tower with a beautiful, walnut, spiral staircase. Many original features were saved and restored such as the doors, windows, coffered ceiling, fireplace and porch. The museum contains a collection of items including bells from steam locomotives, a light from a steam locomotive tender, cast iron and concrete signs, railroad lanterns, railroad tools, as well as a unique collection of smaller items, including silver items used in dining cars, office items used in the agent’s offices, and advertising items. The museum features railroad memorabilia and changing exhibits. CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS.

CITY OF SUFFOLK - VOLUNTEERING & NNO
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING OR COMPLETING AN INTERNSHIP WITH THE CITY OF SUFFOLK ?
There are many opportunities to become civically engaged with the City of Suffolk! We work to match volunteers and interns with opportunities that fit their interests, talents, knowledge and skillsets.
Volunteers and interns are a valuable asset to the community and assist us in creating quality programs, activities and events and help our community shine. From athletic coaching to community clean-ups - there is something for everyone!
School clubs, civic groups, scouts, individuals and interns are welcome. Volunteers and interns receive valuable training and job experience, socialization, a great volunteer environment, career enhancement, recognition, and the opportunity to meet and assist others. With a variety of volunteer options to choose from, you can find something for your group, your family or just yourself.
Have another idea for a volunteer project? Send us an email at parksemail@suffolkva.us and we’ll help structure a project that fits you or your group perfectly.
Eagle Scout Candidate, Ryan Delong, completed his Eagle Scout project in July of 2023 at Sleepy Hole Park! Ryan added several Bat Boxes to Sleepy Hole Park. Bats sometimes get a bad reputation and are surrounded by misconceptions. However, bats generally do not pose a threat to humans and play a huge role in benefitting the local ecosystem. In addition to enhancing the biodiversity of the park, the bats are natural way to control pest and insects. With the park being right on the water, we look for ways to naturally control the mosquito population to make the park more enjoyable to our visitors. A big “Thank You” goes out to Ryan and his team for enhancing our parks!
CITY OF SUFFOLK - NNO SUMMER SPOTLIGHT
It was that special time of year where Suffolk citizens and public safety personnel took time to celebrate National Night Out, held on Tuesday, August 1. National Night Out is an evening where everyone joins together to say “NO” to crime and to strengthen their bonds within their communities. Over 100 communities, homeowner’s associations, civic organizations, neighborhoods, churches and business sponsors are partnered to make this year’s event extra special with block parties, cook-outs, and mini-festivals covering the landscape of Suffolk. Suffolk had 8 tour motorcades that fanned out across the City to visit the registered parties and to enjoy the NNO fun.

While Mills Riddick’s contemporaries may have mocked his Greek Revival home when it was built in 1837, the house now stands as a beautiful reminder of the past and is one of Suffolk’s most popular attractions.
The impressive structure features striking architectural details. The five frieze band windows across the front of the house are rarely seen in eastern Virginia. The front of the mansion is bricked in Flemish bond, and double chimneys rise from both ends of the stately historic landmark. Slender columns of the Greek Revival period frame the main entrance. The interior showcases intricately carved moldings and elaborate ceiling medallions throughout the house.
Riddick’s Folly has four floors, 21 rooms, and 16 fireplaces. All four floors are open to the public. The building features elegantly furnished double parlors, a gentleman’s library, and adult and children’s bed chambers. Also open are the laundry, dining rooms, and kitchen.
Registered with the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission and the National Register of Historic Places. During the Civil War, Riddick’s Folly served as headquarters for the Union Army.

This nature preserve encompasses over 112,000 acres where visitors enjoy wildlife observation, history, mystery, and lore. Visitors may participate in biking, fishing and boating, hiking, hunting, and nature photography.
