from the Director Now that the weather is warmer, it’s time to get outside and have some fun at one of your local parks! No matter which park you decide to visit, there are always opportunities for you to enjoy nature and make memories! I grew up playing at Ida Easter Park located in the Saratoga neighborhood. My friends and I practically lived there during the spring and summer. I have so many fond memories of playing on the swings or challenging someone to a game of 21 on the basketball court! Today, there are even more parks and playgrounds for us to enjoy throughout the city.
The Sleepy Hole Park Canoe and Kayak launch stays crowded this time of the year with fishermen, young and young at heart. Planter’s Park is filled with citizens walking and running the track as well as children playing in the open space areas or on the playground. Lake Meade is definitely busy with people playing tennis, walking the trail, skating, or visiting the dog park. Our Barbecue parks are special places that allow us to growGrill and learn about ourselves and our communities. I encourage you to get out and visit one of SufBasketball Court folk’s parks this season and discover something new about yourself andOutdoor the park. Therapeutic Recreation may also be simply referred to as recreation therapy. Recreational therapists work with clients to restore motor, social and cognitive functioning, build confidence, develop coping skills, and integrate skills learned in treatment settings into community settings. Intervention areas vary widely and are based upon client interests. Examples of intervention modalities include creative arts (e.g., crafts, music, dance, drama, among others), sports, adventure programming, dance/movement, and leisure education. Maribel Bracke is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist working in Suffolk Parks and Recreation to serve as a resource and facilitator for our TR programs. She can be reached at 757-514-7264.

What made you consider Parks & Recreation as a Career Field? I actually didn’t really consider career in the field at first at all. Since doing this internship I really would like to stay in this field. I really enjoyed the people and this atmosphere. Have you ever been a participant in any summer camps, sports teams, before and after school programs or other recreational type programs? How did that impact you and did it influence your decision to pursue a career in recreation? All the way up until the age of 13 I went to summer camp at Mac Benn Elementary School with my two sisters. After that, I then became a CIT worker. The biggest impact was that it kept me busy and it was nice to see my friends in the summer outside of school. What was most rewarding about an internship in Parks & Recreation? I had the opportunity see what went on behind the scenes when it came to events and programs that I did not know well. I also had the ability to sit on my first real conference as a professional. This really was an eye opening experience and I would recommend someone to do an internship or just volunteer within a recreation department. What kinds of things have you learned so far during your internship? I have learned the budgeting, event planning, athletic season planning, rec site programs, active seniors and many, many more. I’ll admit sometimes I don’t even feel like I’m in an internship but I’m part of the staff. That’s why I’ve been having so much fun. If you could give one piece of advice to a student about to complete an internship with a Parks & Recreation Department, what would it be? Ask as many questions as you can, take in as much as you can but, most importantly have fun and create memories and connections in the process. This time will go by fast but you will never forget the things that you accomplished.

Internship Spotlight: Dare Wright ~ Virginia Wesleyan College Major: Recreation and Leisure Studies What made you consider Parks & Recreation as a Career Field? When I got into Virginia Wesleyan College, I wasn’t a hundred percent sure what I wanted to do. I enrolled in a 101 Recreation class and I enjoyed everything I was learning and couldn’t wait for the opportunity to learn more. I began to connect my experience in recreational softball and the Recreation and Leisure Studies major. I thought I would get to be able to one day give back to kids and help them grow through Recreational play. After my first year of college and 3 classes in recreation later, I made my major concrete in Recreation and Leisure Studies. Have you ever been a participant in any summer camps, sports teams, before and after school programs or other recreational type programs? How did that impact you and did it influence your decision to pursue a career in recreation? At the age of eight, I started playing softball through the South Hill Dixie Youth League. Softball was a recreational outlet for players of all ages and skill. I grew up giving my heart and soul into a sport that I was given the opportunity to play through this recreational outlet. I played in this particular league for over nine years and I can proudly say that playing through the league helped shape me into who I am today. What is most rewarding about completing an internship in Parks & Recreation? Completing my internship is rewarding for a number of reasons. I get the opportunity to work in different areas and learn things I never thought went into Parks and Recreation. I get the opportunity to grow my network and meet many different people. I get the hands-on opportunity to see the impact on all different kinds of people. What kinds of things have you learning so far during your internship? When working with athletics, I learned a lot about youth and adult league sports. I got a first-hand experience in creating advertisement pieces, rules, rosters, etc. I learned the proper phone etiquette for making phone calls to manufacturers of trophies, t-shirts, etc. The active adults program at East Suffolk has really taught me to step out of my comfort zone and talk to people I may not know. Through the multiple meetings I have attended, I learned the proper way to run one and how to follow an agenda. I have learned a lot about the systems used within Parks and Recreation such as survey monkey, etc. I have taken in a TON of information on the accreditation process, which has been really amazing to see the progress. If you could give one piece of advice to a student about to complete an internship with a Parks & Recreation Department, what would it be? Don’t settle for the first internship that comes along and always ask questions. When I started the internship hunt, I was ready to settle for the first thing I could get. I was going to be stuck working in one major area, athletics. Yes, I wanted to focus on athletics but when I left my internship, I wanted to say I got the most out of it that I could. When I decided to give Suffolk Parks and Recreation a try, it was the best decision I ever made. I was given the opportunity to work in multiple areas, which will be very handy in the career field. Also, I learn more and more every day just by asking the simplest questions that there is no question that is “stupid.”
