arthere Why Suwanee? Award-winning Suwanee is one of America’s best places to call home. Money Magazine has included the community on its list of America’s Best Places to Live several times, and, in 2013, Family Circle named Suwanee one of the country’s “10 Best Towns for Families.” In a 2012 citizen survey, 99 percent of resident-respondents rated Suwanee as an excellent or good place to live and would recommend living in Suwanee to others. We know that Suwanee can be an even better, more distinctive, and more connected community. Investing in public art will help us achieve that better-than-ever status.
Why Art? Through Suwanee’s public art program, managed by the City Council-appointed Public Arts Commission, a dozen art pieces have found permanent homes throughout our community over the last six years. Our SculpTour program – a walkable public art exhibit throughout the downtown area – brings another dozen or so pieces to Suwanee every two years. Our public sculptures become meeting places, picnic spots, and photo opportunities. They elicit emotional responses – laughter and even tears. Art has become a colorful component of Suwanee’s landscape and our residents’ daily lives.

sculptour SculpTour – a walkable public art encounter Over the past several years, downtown Suwanee has enjoyed visits from a dancer caught in mid-leap, a really tall giraffe, a phone booth to heaven, a wind sculpture made from everyday housewares, a Dalmatian family, and a fairy the color of a Florida sunset. These are just a few of the sculptures that have been included in Suwanee’s SculpTour exhibits. Suwanee’s walkable public art encounter was first installed in 2011. In 2013, the exhibit was extended to a nearly two-year period. During its first three years, SculpTour brought 44 sculptures and art pieces created by 32 artists to downtown Suwanee. Visitors and residents take a one-mile walking tour of the pieces – or simply enjoy them as they relax in Suwanee.
SculpTour enlivens Town Center Park and other parts of downtown Suwanee. Resident Chris Dolgetta says: “I absolutely love seeing all the pieces! I didn’t realize what a nice effect the sculptures could give – it’s a beautiful added dimension to our already amazing Town Center.”
Lasting impressions The SculpTour program has turbocharged the expansion of the City’s permanent art collection. Of the dozen permanent pieces acquired over the past several years, seven of them were acquired through the SculpTour program. As funding allows, the City of Suwanee purchases at least one SculpTour piece at the end of each exhibit. Residents also make private donations. Finding homes in parks and other locations throughout the community, these permanent pieces broaden the public art experience. The Public Arts Commission works with the City’s planning department and private developers to ensure that public art is considered in all new construction plans. The City asks that one percent of building costs be used to fund public art – either on the site being developed or in other public locations throughout the community. Following its own guidelines, in 2009, the City of Suwanee dedicated one percent of construction costs for its new City Hall to commission an original work of art. Shimmering Echoes, by artist Koryn Rolstad, now transforms the atrium. The City also installed permanent art at the new police training facility in 2012.

Remembering 9-11 Remembrance, a multifaceted memorial, is perhaps the most impactful piece in the City’s collection. Unveiled September 11, 2013, the exhibit at Town Center Park features an artifact from the World Trade Center. Artist Marc Moulton created the memorial, which also includes an inverted conical sculpture displaying a map of lower Manhattan. At night, an aerial view of the cityscape casts shadows onto an embedded timeline of 9-11.
