Business Highlight: Bay Hauling
You may have seen the blue and gold logo on the side of their trucks and thought of another bay area team. Bay Hauling is scoring points of their own while beating its competition with excellent service every single day! Voted the 2021 Vallejo Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year, Bay Hauling is Vallejo's go-to junk removal service and beyond.
Owned and operated by Vallejo natives Juan and Joanna Vallejos. Like the once small town of Vallejo, Juan Vallejos began Bay Hauling with a single truck and trailer. In five years, he's grown to five trucks and eleven full-time employees. Although they serve the east and north bay, 80% of their business is based right here in Vallejo!
"We pride ourselves on being service oriented. We care about the work we do," said Juan. "Unlike some big-name companies, we care about our customers."
In a service-based industry, the way to stand
out is by fostering relationships and doing something the corporate companies don't –giving back to the community. Juan is humble regarding his philanthropic endeavors, but his wife Joanna was happy to share some of the ways he invests his free time back into the community.
"When he isn't working, Juan volunteers for youth programs and is involved in leadership programs. He does a lot for Vallejo!"
Juan was the driving force behind the first Junior Leadership Program – Future Leaders of Vallejo. The program consisted of 16 kids from four Vallejo high schools. He hopes to continue the program and make it available yearly. In addition, Juan is actively involved in youth football programs, sponsoring a softball team and Vallejo PAL Boxing.
"I want people to see how supporting local business benefits the community." Juan shared. "By shopping local, you keep money in Vallejo,
and that helps the city grow."
The Vallejo Chamber of Commerce is working on revitalizing the "Shop Vallejo First" initiative that will connect Vallejo residents with information on local businesses, like Bay Hauling. Keeping Vallejo dollars in Vallejo is one important key component to creating a thriving economy. Juan and Joanna Vallejos have made it their mission to help improve the city they call home.
Reuse and repurposing is another vital part of Bay Hauling's philosophy. By partnering with non-profits, like Habitat for Humanity, the Bay Hauling team ensures nothing goes to waste. Regular salvaging and repurposing also support the environment by reducing waste in our landfills.
"We try to save as much as we can and donate it," Joanna explained as she pointed to a vase in the center of the office. The repurposed glass vase holding a lovely bouquet was acquired in one of their clean-ups, which Joanna lovingly received from Juan for Valentine's Day.
"We always try to salvage what we can. Sorting is a major part of what we do. Knowing what can be recycled and how to recycle it has a major impact on the environment." Joanna explained how they sort the "junk" to make sure pieces are appropriately recycled or donated to Goodwill.
