VALLEJO WEEKLY

ANDREW'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

Hello Vallejo,

As summer winds down, I hope that you will enjoy some upcoming community events, such as National Night Out on August 6th and GVRD’s (Greater Vallejo Recreation District) 80th Anniversary Celebration on August 10th. You can find more information on these events and others in this edition of the Vallejo Weekly.

Later this month, thousands of Vallejo students will return to school. Please be careful, patient, and safe on the roadways to help ensure that these young people get to school safely. Many organizations are providing free back-to-school supplies. Locations you should check out for free supplies (while supplies last) include Children’s Wonderland on Glenn Street this Saturday 8/3, 11:30-4:30 and City Park on 8/10, 11-3 PM.

I had the pleasure of attending the blues and R&B concert at Richardson Park last Saturday. The picture on the front cover of this edition of the Vallejo Weekly is from that event, next to our City table where we provided information about City programs. It was clear that the lively music and vendors were enjoyed by all.

You’ll also find an article in this Vallejo Weekly about the recent military burial that took place in Vallejo for Marcus Engesser who died 82 years ago as a prisoner of war in the Philippines. His remains were finally laid to rest here at home with his family receiving the National Colors from a U.S. Army Honor Guard.

We have wrapped up our final Community Meeting for the recruitment of the permanent Police Chief. You can find the brochure for the Police Chief recruitment and the link to the community survey on our City website homepage at cityofvallejo.net and on our City social media.

The City of Vallejo is creating an updated homelessness strategy that will incorporate the recent US Supreme Court ruling in the Grants Pass case. The City will also be engaging with State agencies to coordinate on their response to the Governor’s recent order regarding clearing encampments on State property. The City of Vallejo is doing its part to provide housing for the currently unhoused. The City is currently constructing two affordable housing facilities, the 47-unit permanent supportive housing Broadway Project and the 125-bed Navigation Center shelter.

With appreciation, Andrew Murray Vallejo City Manager

SolTrans Announces New Schedules for Improved Connectivity and Efficiency

Solano County, CA – Solano County Transit (SolTrans) will make schedule adjustments and minor route changes effective Sunday, August 11, 2024. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to providing efficient and timely public transportation for the community.

Starting Sunday, August 11, 2024, departure times for all four Express lines will be adjusted to ensure a reliable transfer window between Express buses and the new BART service schedules. This strategic alignment maintains the number of Express trips serving BART, with one exception on the Red Line at the 9 a.m. hour. Two overlapping trips have been consolidated into one, which allows for a highly requested 3:30 p.m. trip on the Red Line from El Cerrito del Norte BART.

Several minor adjustments have also been made to improve overall service efficiency and connectivity:

• Reverse Commute Trips: Travel times for reverse commute trips on the Express lines have been scaled back to better reflect actual travel conditions, reducing the need for buses to hold at timepoints.

• Route 2 Northeast Vallejo Adjustments: The last departure time for Route 2 from the Vallejo Transit Center (VTC) has been adjusted to 4:05 p.m. and 9:05 p.m. These changes ensure better connections from Express lines to the last local service from VTC and improved alignment with other routes.

• New Alignments on Routes 7A Clockwise and 7B Counterclockwise to Gateway Plaza: Routes 7A and 7B have been realigned to include new routing around Redwood and Rotary. Additionally, new stops on Redwood have been added to better serve that neighborhood.

These adjustments are based on feedback from our passengers and aim to provide a more reliable and convenient service. We encourage all passengers to review the updated schedules available on our website, SolTrans.org or at the Vallejo Transit Center Ticket Office

Solano County Transit (SolTrans) has been the public transportation provider for south Solano County since July 2011. SolTrans provides local and Express fixed routes and complementary paratransit. The agency is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) governed by a six-member Board of Directors, composed of two representatives from the cities of Benicia and Vallejo, Solano County’s representative on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and a representative from the Solano Transportation Authority.

Military Burial for Vallejo Soldier Marcus Engesser

On July 20, 82 years after his death as a prisoner of war in the Philippines, the remains of Marcus Engesser were finally laid to rest next to his late mother, Edith Engesser Nunn of Napa, at Sunrise Cemetery in Vallejo.

Elsie Engesser Thompson of Benicia, Marcus’ sister and only surviving family member, received the National Colors from a U.S. Army Honor Guard along with certificates of appreciation from Neil Ferrer - Philippine Consul General of San Francisco, US Representative John Garamendi, CA State Senator Bill Dodd and Assemblymember Lori Wilson, Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell, and Vallejo Veterans Advocates Nestor Aliga & Delphine Metcalf-Foster.

Marcus and his US Navy brother, Phillip (also buried at Sunrise), are among the 230 Veterans from Vallejo that died during WWII and their names are engraved at the Vallejo War Memorial behind City Hall.

roscoe

Pets of the week

ROSCOE

Rottweiler, Male, Young

Meet Roscoe! This stunning 1-year-old Rottweiler could be a cover model for a high-end pet calendar, but don't let his dapper good looks fool you! According to volunteers, Roscoe is just a big smooshy puppy with zero spatial awareness and a super silly side! If you have a lap, he'll gladly "smoosh" himself into it. He is also very happy to pose for long photo sessions and he loves to give—and get—kisses. Roscoe is a playful boy who can't wait to romp and run with his buddy Romeo in the shelter's play yard and he is a good parallel-walker with our HSNB alumni superstar and resident pup-tester, Ari. If you'd like to meet Roscoe, visit our Adoption Page at HSNB.org and fill out a Dog Adoption Interest Application.

ECHO

Domestic Shorthair, Female, Kitten

Are you ready to add a touch of magic to your life? Look no further than Echo, our enchanting 3-month-old kitten! This charming little lady is a delicate blend of white and gray dilute calico with a unique twist—one sparkling green eye and one mesmerizing blue eye. Echo is not just a pretty face; she's also a curious explorer who enjoys batting at toys and finding cozy spots to nap. She’s ready to find a forever home where she can grow into her full potential as a loving companion. Whether you're looking for a snuggle buddy or a playful partner in crime, Echo is ready to fill your life with love and laughter. To meet Echo, visit our Adoption Page at HSNB.org and fill out a Cat Adoption Interest Application.Application.

For a list of our available cats and dogs, go to HSNB.org and click the Adoptions tab. We welcome potential adopters to browse available animals on our website and if interested, download an application. Email cat applications to catadoptions@hsnb.org and dog applications to adoptions@hsnb.org. Pets are available at the time of article submission. We cannot guarantee they will be available upon publication. Humane Society of the North Bay is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are located at 1121 Sonoma Blvd., Vallejo. We are open daily by appointment, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are actively seeking fosters for our pets in need, and we are always seeking donations to help us do the life-saving work we do.
