VALLEJO WEEKLY

ANDREW'S ANNOUNCEMENTS

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

Hello Vallejo,

A summer of beautiful weather and great events is coming to an end. On Monday, classroom doors will open, welcoming thousands of Vallejo students back to school. Make sure to get out and enjoy family time this final summer week at events such as August Summer Nights and Treetopia. You can find flyers on these fun activities in this edition of the Weekly.

The process of selecting our next permanent Police Chief is moving forward. We completed our community meetings, key stakeholder meetings and community survey to get input on the key characteristics and qualifications of the next Chief. Applications were due last Friday. The City’s recruiting firm and I will be reviewing the applications to select the most qualified candidates, who will be invited to in-person interviews with multiple panels in early September. One panel will be comprised of community members selected by Council Members. I’d like to thank the community for your active participation in this process.

Did you catch Vallejo native H.E.R. perform at the Olympic closing ceremony earlier this week? She was phenomenal and is a great example of Vallejo’s talent and spirit.

Earlier this year, the City launched a brand new civic engagement program called the Citizens Academy. Through the program, community members learn about the responsibilities and functions of all of the City’s departments. The inaugural class of participants graduated last week, shown on the cover and further described in an article in this Weekly. We will continue this successful program next year. Be on the lookout for an announcement later this year regarding applications for next year’s program.

Be safe and kind.

With appreciation,

Contact: Mandi Renshaw SolTrans

311 Sacramento St Vallejo, CA 94590 (707) 736-6982

Solano County, CA As students head back to school for the 2024-2025 academic year, SolTrans would like to remind all youth aged 18 and under that they can ride all SolTrans routes for FREE . This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to support education and promote sustainable transportation options in the community.

SolTrans encourages parents and guardians to consider utilizing Local or Express bus services to ensure a smooth and stress-free start to the school year. Riding the bus not only offers a convenient alternative to driving but also helps alleviate traffic congestion around schools, promoting a safer environment for students.

Key Details of the Free Ride Program:

• Eligibility: All youth aged 18 and under can ride any SolTrans route at no cost.

• Service Areas: SolTrans provides extensive local coverage throughout Vallejo. Routes 15 and 17 align with Benicia Middle and High School bell schedules. E xpress Lines connect students to Solano Community College in Fairfield and BART.

• How to Ride: Students simply need to board any SolTrans bus and inform the driver that they are a student or youth. No fare or special pass is required.

“ The Youth Ride Free Pilot Program aims to eliminate the financial barriers associated with school commutes for our young riders and their families. By providing free bus rides, we ’ re not only easing their journey to school but also nurturing a future generation of dedicated transit users, ” said Beth Kranda, Executive Director of SolTrans. “ We’ ve seen encouraging participation from youth over the summer, and we ’ re excited to see how this program will support students as the school year begins. ”

Youth are eligible to ride all SolTrans Local and Express services anytime; the program is not limited to travel to and from school. To make the most of this opportunity, students and their families are encouraged to familiarize themselves with SolTrans routes and schedules. Detailed route maps and schedules can be found on the SolTrans website, SolTrans.org

Solano County Transit (SolTrans) has been the public transportation provider for south Solano County since July 2011. SolTrans provides local and Express fixed routes and complementary paratransit. The agency is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) governed by a six-member Board of Directors, composed of two representatives from the cities of Benicia and Vallejo, Solano County’ s representative on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and a representative from the Solano Transportation Authority. ###

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS SEEKS COMMUNITY’S

HELP IDENTIFYING CENTENARIANS FOR RECOGNITION CEREMONY

SOLANO COUNTY – The Solano County Board of Supervisors needs the community’s help in identifying centenarians living in our community for recognition at an upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting later this fall as part of the 17th annual centenarian commemoration celebration.

For the past 16 years, the Solano County Board of Supervisors has recognized and honored centenarians by hosting a celebration for them during a Board of Supervisors meeting. The commemoration serves to capture and share the stories of some of Solano County’s oldest residents, while bringing attention to some of the issues facing the senior population.

This year, as part of the commemoration event, the Board will receive a video presentation of Solano County’s Centenarians, sharing stories from their amazing lives. The Board has hired a professional videographer who will come to your home (or place of your choosing) to conduct the video interview Information collected at the interviews will also be included as part of a commemorative yearbook, distributed to all Centenarians shortly after the commemoration event. Centenarians who wish not to conduct an interview are still encouraged to submit information, including a biography and photographs to help tell their life story.

To date the Board has honored more than 225 centenarians in Solano County. Two centenarians reached super-centenarian status, including Marie West in 2011 and Reta Wills in 2021. Supercentenarians are those individuals who have reached the age of 110 years or older, which only occurs at a rate of about 1 in 7 million people.

According to the Boston University School of Medicine, 2022 New England Centenarian Study, out of a population of 336.9 million people, there were approximately 89,739 centenarians living in the United States, or a prevalence of 0.27 percent of the total population

The prevalence of centenarians living in the United States has been increasing over time and nearly doubled in the past 20 years. In addition to genetics, physical activity and social support, scientists liken our ability to prevent and treat diseases like cancer, pneumonia and stroke to be a strong indicator this trend will likely continue.

Phase One of Sereno Beautification Project Completed: A Milestone in SolTrans’ Clean California Grant

Solano County, CA –Solano County Transit (SolTrans) is thrilled to announce the successful completion of Phase One of the Sereno Transit Center Beautification Project, a key milestone in the Clean California Grant, received in October 2023. The initiative is a $1.2 billion, multi-year clean-up effort led by Caltrans to remove trash, create thousands of jobs, and engage communities to revitalize public spaces.

The first phase of the Sereno Beautification Project focused on custom murals by local artists enhancing the drivers’ building and surrounding utility boxes. The mural artwork lead by local artist Melissa Penny (Malis Bee) and her assistants “The Hive”, includes SolTrans’ buses, regular riders, and a mural of butterflies all painted by local women from the community.

The project is far from over. Starting mid-August, Phase Two will bring a host of exciting additions. The Sereno Beautification Project includes landscaping aimed at enhancing natural beauty, alongside the installation of electrical systems for improved lighting solutions. Solar-powered lighting will be integrated into four shelters, promoting sustainable energy practices. Additionally, eleven new pathway lights and four inground lights will be installed to enhance visibility and safety. The project also involves the construction of a shade structure, ensuring comfort and protection from the elements for all riders. Scheduled for completion in December 2024, this phase marks a transformative milestone for the surrounding neighborhood and community

SolTrans extends their deepest gratitude to the funding partner, Caltrans District 4, for their generous support and collaboration. The Clean California Grant and Caltrans District 4’s partnership have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life.
