ANDREW'S ANNOUNCEMENTS
A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
Hello Vallejo,
Thousands of students in Vallejo headed back to school this week (I’m sure there were a mix of emotions!) and I truly hope you‘re having a wonderful and safe week while kicking off the new school year.
As we begin the transition from summer to fall, our great community events continue. This weekend, I’m looking forward to attending the Vallejo Sister City Association’s 18th Annual International Dinner and Auction. This fundraising event helps VSCA celebrate Vallejo’s beautiful diversity while raising funds to collaborate with the City’s Sister City Commission. Hope to see you at the event! Tickets can be purchased at the door or ahead of time-please check out the flyer in this edition of the Weekly for all of the details.
Also in this Weekly, you’ll find an article on a successful pilot program the Police Department has implemented. The Integrated Health and Resource Team (IHART) is a mobile crisis response team that responds to people experiencing mental health crises and provides support and linkages to appropriate services. The program is similar to other programs being implemented throughout that nation that aim to reduce the role of police in responding to mental health crises and improve outcomes for the individuals experiencing crises. Please take a look at the article on how IHART has already shown successful results in many cases here in Vallejo.
The Police Department and other City departments are also continuing regular efforts to remove abandoned vehicles and clean homeless encampments on City streets. Please read the article in this Weekly on the latest Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Operation.
Be safe and kind.
With appreciation, Andrew Murray
Vallejo City Manager
Pets of the week
VIVIAN
Domestic Longhair, Female, Adult
Meet Vivian! This lusciously fluffy 4-year-old brown Tabby is an active girl who loves zipping around her foster home and playing tag! She's not necessarily a lap cat, but she shows her affection by playing games with her human and cuddling up close under the dining table and in other comfy spaces. Vivian also loves chasing wand toys and carrying toy mice around in her cute little mouth. And boy, does she love to "talk!" This talkative Tabby enjoys chattering aloud and is sure to catch you up on all the "hot goss" of the day – the feline edition! To set up a meet and greet with the lovely Vivian, go to HSNB.org and fill out our cat adoption interest application.
ROMEO
Pit Bull Terrier, Male, Young
Romeo is a handsome, honey-colored 1-year-old pit bull who has melted the hearts of staff and volunteers at HSNB. He can be timid at first, but he is easily won over with gentle affection. Romeo loves being caressed and he gives the best kisses! He's goofy and playful and has done well with other dogs in the play yard. He is still a bit unsure of his surroundings but is learning to walk confidently on a leash. If you enjoy a casual stroll, then Romeo is just your speed; he wants to sniff everything! He's a bit fearful of being inside, so we think he was left outdoors for most of his life. To meet Romeo, visit our Adoption Page at HSNB.org and fill out a Dog Adoption Interest Application.
For a list of our available cats and dogs, go to HSNB.org and click the Adoptions tab. We welcome potential adopters to browse available animals on our website and if interested, download an application. Email cat applications to catadoptions@hsnb.org and dog applications to adoptions@hsnb.org. Pets are available at the time of article submission. We cannot guarantee they will be available upon publication. Humane Society of the North Bay is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are located at 1121 Sonoma Blvd., Vallejo. We are open daily by appointment, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are actively seeking fosters for our pets in need, and we are always seeking donations to help us do the life-saving work we do.
Healthy Vallejo Community support services prop 64 clean-ups
As part of the City of Vallejo’s Prop 64 grant program, the City helps to fund the salaries of youth who take part in targeted clean-ups around the community. This work, along with connections to mentorship and other support services, is carried out by Healthy Vallejo Community Support Services, under the direction of Apostle Anthony Summers and his team.
Healthy Vallejo’s goal is to employ at-risk youth to help beautify, remove trash, provide weed abatement, and simply clean up various portions of the city. The youth are hired on as interns and supervisors depending on their time and experience with the program. Many come from challenging backgrounds, but through Healthy Vallejo, they are taught life, educational, and vocational skillsets. The group of interns has been instrumental in helping to reduce illegal dumping, improve public safety, reduce code enforcement violations, remove blight, and aide in clean-ups around the outskirts of encampments.
Through the Prop 64 grant, sites are identified through a partnership with the City Manager’s Office, Public Works Department, Code Enforcement Department, Recology, and non-profit partners. Over the past few months, the group has cleaned up several major areas such as Broadway x Mini, Lewis Brown x Hwy 37, Avion Dr, areas of Lincoln Road, Meadows Drive, and most recently Highway 37 x Mini Drive. They continue to work with the City and community to help beautify Vallejo!

IHART RELEASES INAUGURAL 80-DAY REPORT
The Vallejo Police Department (VPD) proudly highlights the impactful work of the Integrated Health and Resource Team (IHART), which has played a critical role in enhancing community support services. From April 11, 2024, to June 30, 2024, IHART responded to 408 calls for service, with an impressive average response time of 9.4 minutes.
These are calls that normally would have required a police officer response, but the existence of IHART now allows for an alternative non-police response. Deputy Chief of Police Bob Knight said, “The IHART model is so far a resounding success and an innovative approach to dealing with these complex issues This is a program that the City of Vallejo should be proud of”.
Some Of IHART’s Impacts Include:
Crisis Intervention: Focus on welfare checks, potential 5150 holds, and support after police or medical encounters. Significant efforts are directed towards youth mental health.
Youth Services: Providing mentorship, safety planning, and emotional support, especially outside school hours. Every teen encountered has expressed a desire for help.
Two Of Many Notable Incidents: IHART mediated a family dispute, supported a man mistakenly released from a medical facility, and assisted an elderly resident with medication management.
Training: IHART is enhancing its skills with Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI) certification and in-house training on workplace integrity, anger management, and communication.
Outreach: Expanded efforts to meet community needs, collaborating with local organizations, and distributing essential supplies to the unhoused population.
Follow-Up & Case Management: Conducted 106 successful follow-ups, leading to case management, educational opportunities, safe housing, and more.
Trends: Most calls occur between 10 AM-1 PM and 3 PM-5 PM, with an increasing demand for youth services.
IHART continues to be an innovative approach to crisis response in Vallejo Through collaboration and a commitment to public safety, IHART has made significant improvements in the lives of community members. For a detailed overview of IHART's achievements, the "IHART 80 Day Report" is available for public viewing at Vallejopd.net.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS SEEKS COMMUNITY’S
HELP IDENTIFYING CENTENARIANS FOR RECOGNITION CEREMONY
SOLANO COUNTY – The Solano County Board of Supervisors needs the community’s help in identifying centenarians living in our community for recognition at an upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting later this fall as part of the 17th annual centenarian commemoration celebration.
For the past 16 years, the Solano County Board of Supervisors has recognized and honored centenarians by hosting a celebration for them during a Board of Supervisors meeting. The commemoration serves to capture and share the stories of some of Solano County’s oldest residents, while bringing attention to some of the issues facing the senior population.
This year, as part of the commemoration event, the Board will receive a video presentation of Solano County’s Centenarians, sharing stories from their amazing lives. The Board has hired a professional videographer who will come to your home (or place of your choosing) to conduct the video interview Information collected at the interviews will also be included as part of a commemorative yearbook, distributed to all Centenarians shortly after the commemoration event. Centenarians who wish not to conduct an interview are still encouraged to submit information, including a biography and photographs to help tell their life story.
To date the Board has honored more than 225 centenarians in Solano County. Two centenarians reached super-centenarian status, including Marie West in 2011 and Reta Wills in 2021. Supercentenarians are those individuals who have reached the age of 110 years or older, which only occurs at a rate of about 1 in 7 million people.
According to the Boston University School of Medicine, 2022 New England Centenarian Study, out of a population of 336.9 million people, there were approximately 89,739 centenarians living in the United States, or a prevalence of 0.27 percent of the total population
The prevalence of centenarians living in the United States has been increasing over time and nearly doubled in the past 20 years. In addition to genetics, physical activity and social support, scientists liken our ability to prevent and treat diseases like cancer, pneumonia and stroke to be a strong indicator this trend will likely continue.
CONTACTING THE COUNTY ABOUT CENTENARIANS
If you know of a centenarian, please email Centenarian@SolanoCounty.com and/or call (707) 784-3004 by or before September 4, 2023.

• How to Ride: Students simply need to board any SolTrans bus and inform the driver that they are a student or youth. No fare or special pass is required.
“ The Youth Ride Free Pilot Program aims to eliminate the financial barriers associated with school commutes for our young riders and their families. By providing free bus rides, we ’ re not only easing their journey to school but also nurturing a future generation of dedicated transit users, ” said Beth Kranda, Executive Director of SolTrans. “ We’ ve seen encouraging participation from youth over the summer, and we ’ re excited to see how this program will support students as the school year begins. ”
Youth are eligible to ride all SolTrans Local and Express services anytime; the program is not limited to travel to and from school. To make the most of this opportunity, students and their families are encouraged to familiarize themselves with SolTrans routes and schedules.
