The Sacramento Street Bridge Has Reopened!
Val l ej o W ee kl y
On Wednesday, June 29, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the reopening of the Sacramento Street Bridge.
2
The bridge, originally built in 1913 and modified in 1930, runs over Mare Island Railroad, between Illinois Street, and Farragut Avenue, on Sacramento Street. Seismic engineers identified the bridge as having earthquake vulnerabilities under the existing standards, so the City of Vallejo applied for a Caltrans Highway Bridge Program (HBP) grant in order to replace it. We received 88.5% of the project’s funding from federal funds (from the HBP) and 11.5% local matching funds.
The new bridge is a cast-in-place, prestressed concrete slab bridge, and has a design life of 75 years – it will not need to be replaced again for over 100 years. The single span bridge deck is 67.25’ long, 74.0’ wide, 2.25’ deep, and took 54,000 construction man worker hours, 3,930 tons of concrete, 310,000 pounds of steel, and 1,830 feet of foundation piling to build! The bridge serves approximately 8,800 vehicles per day. You can learn more about the project at MyVallejo.com/Sacramento-Street-Bridge.

Our Water Facilities Maintenance Division recently repurposed wood chips from trees that
were removed at our Green Valley Treatment Plant. These chips are not only used for decorative purposes - but more importantly - weed suppression.
