Kwanzaa – Vallejo’s 22nd Season of African American Cultural Celebration

One of the many ways to experience Vallejo’s rich cultural diversity is to gather to celebrate holidays and traditions from other lands. Kwanzaa is one of the newest, at only 54 years old. Based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of West and Southeast Africa, Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 as a way for African American families to reconnect to their roots and their community.

Each day of Kwanzaa is devoted to celebrating the seven basic values of African culture or the

“Nguzo Saba” which in Swahili means the seven principles. Translated these are: unity, selfdetermination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics (building Black businesses), purpose, creativity and faith.

The Vallejo celebration is a gathering of people coming together to enjoy the enrichment of our African culture through stories, music, dance, or song according to event producer Askari Sowonde.

Askari Sowonde Productions is hosting the annual Vallejo Celebration on Friday, December 30, 6:30pm – 9:00pm at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, 734 Marin St. Donation: $10
