New Business Alert: Better Chew Kitchen

"Growing up in rural Southern Maryland to a family of devoted carnivores, Better Chew Kitchen’s founder, Chef GW Chew, experienced the tragedy of losing close relatives due to diet-related diseases (diabetes, cancer, and other illnesses linked to poor diet and overconsumption of animal meat products). In 2001, at the age of 18, he made the decision to go vegan in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle but found that many plant-based foods at the time were less than palatable. With a relentless passion, Chef Chew sought to understand why our bodies crave meat, and over the course of nearly 15 years experimenting with literally thousands of

ingredients and cooking techniques, he found the secret to the most authentic plant-based versions of his favorite ethnic and comfort foods. Better Chew was born!

Today Better Chew Kitchen’s mission is to make healthy food affordable and accessible to ALL people! The restaurant will also be community hub providing cooking classes, and other community events.

Better Chew Kitchen will be celebrating their Grand Opening on Sunday, May 28th at 1:00 pm.

You can visit them at 1745 Sonoma Blvd, (the former Subway Sandwich, across the street from Gracie’s)

VALLEJO JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL MOVES TO WATERFRONT GREEN

Vallejo’s 33rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration is moving to a new location this year. One of the City’s most popular annual community events, the Juneteenth festival is moving from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park behind the JFK Library to a familiar open space across the street, Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Green on Mare Island Way at Capitol Street.

Organized by the African American Family Reunion Committee (AAFRC), the Juneteenth celebration takes place Saturday, June 17, from 11 am to 5 pm. This year’s festival includes a parade which starts at 9 a.m. beginning at Broadway and Tennessee Street to Sonoma Boulevard, ending downtown near the waterfront. Entries of all kinds will be accepted until June 2. The application is on the website to download at www.vallejojuneteenth.com.

The festival exhibitors will be offering a wide range of information, including medical and mental health, financial planning, education and job training opportunities, and food and nutrition. In addition to activities for kids, merchants will offer clothing, handcrafted and unique items for sale, and visitors can enjoy a wide selection of popular cuisines prepared by local food vendors. Bring a lawn chair, hat, and sunscreen to sit on the green and enjoy a great music entertainment lineup of funk, R&B, gospel, Latin rock, jazz, and Salsa. Aspiring singers, dancers, musicians, orators, and other

types of performers can have a chance to get some exposure in front of a live audience at Juneteenth. To audition, send an online link to a video of the selection that would be performed if chosen for the entertainment lineup to aafrc@ vallejojuneteenth.com and include contact information. Performances should be no longer than 10 minutes and must be appropriate for all audiences.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Pres. Abraham Lincoln Jan. 1, 1863. On June 19, 1865, two-and-half-years later at a church gathering

in Galveston, Texas, Major General Gordon Granger announced the end of the Civil War and that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. On June 18, 2021, President Joe Biden declared Juneteenth as the 12th federal holiday. In June 2021, Vallejo became the first city in Solano County to display the official Juneteenth flag after a unanimous vote by the City Council. The flag is displayed at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park during the month of June. The Council is expected to approve a proclamation on May 23 proclaiming the week of June 19 as Juneteenth Week.

Anyone who is looking to volunteer for community service at Juneteenth may contact the committee by email at aafrc@vallejojuneteenth.com. For more information about the parade or festival, visit vallejojuneteenth.com.

Application Period for the Chief’s Community Advisory Board (CAB) is Open

VALLEJO, CA —The Chief’s Community Advisory Board (CAB) is established under the direction of the Chief of Police. The board was created to act as a resource for the Chief in forming strategies, developing community policing concepts, and increasing public awareness. The board provides a forum for discussions concerning community concerns, and the goal is to have a broad spectrum of viewpoints represented. To carry out its purpose, the board will address overcoming problems associated with police-community relations, the improvement of the Vallejo Police Department’s operations, and public safety issues to further enhance the quality of life in our community. Although the CAB is expected to be proactive, it does not have the power or authority to investigate, review or otherwise participate in matters involving specific police personnel or specific police-related incidents, as that is the task that the Police Oversight and Accountability Commission (POAC) is charged with.

The CAB consists of 10-15 key stakeholders, comprised of a diverse cross-section of active community members throughout the City of Vallejo. These members will represent a range of various interests and will possess a wide range of experience, including business ownership, education, non-profit experience, public relations backgrounds, faith-based community leaders and members, local youth representation, and more.

Members must be Vallejo residents or business owners and are selected from the pool of applicants by the Chief of Police.
