Hello, Vallejo!

Hope you’re enjoying the first week of fall and the shift to the crisp weather. This fall, we are planning on bringing several hot topics to you at our community meeting coming up October 23, from 6–8 p.m. – save the date (location TBD)! City staff will answer your questions and concerns on public safety/crime, weed abatement/fire hazards, blight, economic development and Measure P/ street maintenance. We look forward to hearing from residents on priorities in your neighborhood at a series of community meetings in the upcoming months. The focus of next month’s community meeting will be on the topics mentioned in Districts 3 and 6.

The City Council approved the Goals for 2023-2024 on Tuesday. These community meetings will help support the goals of an Efficient, Effective and Responsive Government. We will be rotating the City’s community meetings per the City Council’s request and holding them in different districts paired up such as districts 1, 2 and 4, 5. Please inform City staff of topics you’d like to be updated on at these community meetings by contacting Sharon Lund/Community Engagement Manager at Sharon.Lund@cityofvallejo.net. We will publish more information soon on the community meetings in the Vallejo Weekly and City’s social media sites, so stay tuned!

Sprout Film Festival, a fundraiser for The Arc-Solano

Don’t miss the 5th annual Sprout Film Festival on October 15, 2023! This event focuses exclusively on films that celebrate the diverse lives and creativity of people with developmental disabilities. For the second year, our fundraiser will be at the beautiful Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum in downtown Vallejo. Our films will be screened in the lovely Hall of History along with our silent auction, no-host bar, and appetizers.

What can you expect from this event? Comedy! Drama! Documentary! Poetry! Music Video! We have it all! Previous attendees have been blown away by the talent they’ve seen on the screen and they’ve enjoyed themselves immensely. Plus, the silent auction is filled with desirable items and gift cards from our local community, exciting trips, jewelry, and artwork from local artisans. Last year’s auction donors included Bambino’s, Kehaulani’s Cafe, Moment’s Shared, Java Jax, The Buttercup Diner, the Sacramento Rivercats, Alibi Bookshop, Pieced on Earth, and Savage & Cooke.

Funds raised from the Sprout Film Festival are used towards our mission, which is to promote the greatest personal growth, community understanding, and full participation of people with developmental disabilities and their families through support, education, and advocacy.

Vallejo Waterfront Weekend Entertains with an Exciting Musical and Community Stage Lineup!

On Saturday and Sunday, October 7th and 8th, the Vallejo Waterfront Weekend is excited to be providing two days of entertainment for the entire family!

Saturday, October 7th brings an amazing line up of all-day live music, thanks to our entertainment sponsor Mare Island Company. Music begins at noon on Saturday with soul music from LJ Bryant, a talented entertainer, singer, songwriter, and pianist. At 1:30 pm, Soucano, a Latin Rock, Chicano and Soul Cover Band will spice up the afternoon! A local favorite, Alvon Johnson, who is one of the most versatile musicians, singers and entertainers on the music scene today brings Blues and Jazz to the Stage.

And that’s not all... we welcome one of the Bay Area’s number one entertainment bands, East Bay Mudd, a nine-piece party machine that has been entertaining audiences for over 15 years and has always brought the best classic soul and R&B to festivals!

To finish up the evening, Vallejo’s own Papa Joe and the New Deal will be energizing us with motown,dance and classic rock! They will entertain you with feel good music that you are sure to recognize and love.

Sunday, October 8th the Waterfront Weekend will be holding their Community Day. Entertainment will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a live performance from Verismo Opera, with an afternoon of beloved melodies from operas by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Donizetti, Strauss, Bizetandmore. Next we welcome the festive dancing from the Moon Azteca Dance and Art School. Moon Azteca is an organization with an after-school program dedicated to teach children to stay active, motivated and learning the dances, art, traditions and culture of the Mexican Folklore. The event will wrap up with a live performance from hip hop artist Juul Amir.

Spinal Care Injury Active Network welcomes you to sign up for our Kornhole Tournament in social and competitive divisions. The Napa Disc Golf in conjunction with Benicia and Vallejo Disc Golf Clubs will host an exciting 24-hole disc golf tournament on Mare Island’s waterfront and throughout Alden Park. And on Sunday, Coach Sarna League will be hosting a NFL Flag Football Clinic.

Chelu Classics and Family Club and the Boyz Under The Hood Car, two of Vallejo’s biggest and most respected Car Clubs will be coming together to host the Car Show. The car show will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and cars will begin parking at 8 a.m. across the street from the main event grounds. The Car Show is open to all makes, models and years of cars, trucks, motorcycles, and specialty vehicles.

On Saturday, end your day at the Vallejo Waterfront Weekend by running in the Glo Run, hosted by the Vallejo Unified School District and Griffin Technology Academies to support our local youth! Enjoy a fun run on Mare Island and the Vallejo Waterfront promenade, finishing the race with a “glowing” celebration on the festival grounds.

New this year will be a special in-depth, two-hour ride into the history of Mare Island. Hosted by the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation, board a luxury bus beginning in the Historic Core just outside Savage & Cooke Distillery. Enjoy docent-narrated history as we make our way around the Island. Step off the bus and into history at key iconic sites, as well as some sites only opened for this tour.

This is a very exciting time to become a basketball official. As a member of East Bay Basketball Officials Association (EBBOA) you will be able to participate in lectures, trainings and exercises that will prepare you for everything you need to be successful. Every ballgame is one more way to stay connected to the community, while making a positive impact in the lives of many student-athletes.

Becoming a basketball official requires an immense amount of both physical and tactical training. Not only must officials be in good shape so that they can run up and down the court with ease, but they also need to develop communication skills and a concrete understanding of how to interpret each of the ever-evolving high school rules.

CALLING ALL FERRY RIDERS – WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

The operators of the San Francisco Bay Ferry are working on a project to reconfigure the existing Vallejo Ferry Terminal. The project will reduce annual maintenance costs and impacts on the environment, increase operational safety, and improve the overall rider experience.

An environmental study is underway, and we’re asking for feedback on three alternatives, each with different access points around the perimeter of the basin (see figure on the back):

Alternative 1 and 2 propose access from outside of the basin (southwest and northwest corners respectively) with a “dog-leg” design providing pedestrian access to the ferry.

• Alternative 3 proposes extended pedestrian access from the existing ferry terminal access point.

• Each option will provide more passenger queuing area, improve operational safety, and reduce commute times.

Vallejo Center for the Arts Announces Encore Presentation of Three Tenors Concert

The Vallejo Festival Orchestra debuted at the historic Empress Theatre in 2020 with Three Tenors! – The Next Generation, a tribute to the iconic “3 Tenors” concerts that have captivated the world for decades.

Building upon the legendary legacy of Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras, the next concert, on Saturday, October 28, will be an encore presentation featuring three talented young tenors poised to carry the torch forward.

Grammy award-winning conductor Thomas Conlin, the 62 musicians in the Vallejo Festival Orchestra, and the three brilliant young tenors look forward to welcoming you to our evening of passionate and romantic Italian arias and songs. The Bay Trail/Vine Trail project will construct approximately 5 miles of bike and pedestrian trail facilities in the north end of Vallejo to ultimately connect the Vallejo Ferry Terminal to the jurisdictional boundary with American Canyon. The City of Vallejo is excited to announce the beginning of the Bay Trail/Vine Trail Construction Project which will help close the 5-mile trail gap that now exists through Vallejo up to American Canyon. The project will build sections of Class I multi-use trail and sections of Class II and IV bike lanes along sections of Wilson Ave., Sacramento Street, Enterprise Drive, Lewis Brown Drive, Broadway Street, Sonoma Blvd., Meadows Drive, and Catalina Way. The project includes trail enhancements such as wayfinding signage, counters, a rest shelter, interpretive panel, and mileposts. The project addresses accessibility along all of the segments and will produce a safe and inviting facility for bike and pedestrian travel in northern Vallejo. Vallejo will serve as the trailhead and gateway to reach the larger Bay Area!

To construct the project as safely as possible, the public should expect project area closures of the existing trail between White Slough and Highway 37 between Sacramento Street and Enterprise Drive through early 2024. Please plan accordingly by allowing extra time to follow signage and use alternate routes when in these project areas.

Touro University — California’s Success with Diabetes

September 2023 Session

The Diabetes Services at Touro University California is providing a FREE weekly program to help you learn how to live a healthier life with diabetes. In this free interactive 6-session program which began September 22, 2023, you will learn how to understand your lab values, medication management, and exercises of all skill and age levels. THE CITY OF VALLEJO COMMUNITY TOOL TRAILER PROGRAM

The City of Vallejo maintains a Community Tool Trailer stocked with landscaping tools and cleanup supplies to assist groups with community cleanups or beautification projects. This resource is offered to residents and groups free of charge to assist resident volunteers who gather together to give litter the boot!

Community projects must be in the City of Vallejo and must be on public, nonprofit, public school or church property. There is a minimum of ten volunteers committed to the project to make the group eligible for use of the trailer.

The trailer is booked on a first-come, first-served basis year-round – weather permitting. A Public Works staff driver brings the trailer to your event site, stays with the trailer for the duration of the event, and will remove collected bags of litter and/or bulky items.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

• Must be used in Vallejo, CA.

• Must be 18 years old or older to reserve the trailer.

• Must have a minimum of 10 volunteers.

• Project must be on public property (park, greenspace, school), church or nonprofit. NO PERSONAL PROPERTIES.

• Event must have project coordinator or lead volunteer.

• Completion and submittal of trailer application and participant list must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the event to prepare staff schedule.

• All volunteers are required to complete and sign a City of Vallejo volunteer waiver.

GROW WITH GOOGLE SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOPS

Main Street America and Grow with Google have teamed up to help business owners gain new skills through local digital coaches. Through the Grow with Google Digital Coaches program, 10 coaches in small towns across America are offering live trainings and hands-on coaching on topics like how to connect with customers, sell more products online, and improve business productivity – all for free.

Starting in September and continuing through November, Grow with Google Digital Coaches will host a series of both live and on-demand virtual workshops for small business owners. These workshops are free and open to all small business owners and entrepreneurs across the network, beyond the 10 states hosting in-person trainings.
