Message from Mike Hello, Vallejo,

Val l e jo W ee kl y

The tragedy in Israel with innocent lives lost in the War weighs heavily on our community. The City of Vallejo embraces diversity and compassion. At the City Council meeting last Tuesday, there were several callers who joined virtually and expressed hatred and offensive language to the Council, staff and members of our community. These callers who are targeting community forums statewide, often live outside of Vallejo and are not addressing the Council regarding City issues. Unfortunately, what they consider “free speech” affects the availability of the Zoom call-in process as it has in other nearby communities. We heard from genuinely concerned residents Tuesday night who value this virtual comment process in Vallejo. Vallejo’s Mayor Robert McConnell directed our City Attorney to provide more guidance on what is allowed during the Public Forums, whether remotely or in person. Councilmember Mina Loera-Diaz spoke up for all Vallejo residents, saying hate speech is unacceptable and public forums should not be subjected to this type of behavior. She agreed more legal advice was necessary on how to address this issue. At the October 17th special City Council meeting, the Council will be discussing virtual access to Council meetings. Please share your thoughts on how community forums should look in the future for City Council meetings. Just around the corner, we also have our community meeting for Districts 3 and 6 on October 23, 2023, at Glen Cove Elementary School, 6-8 p.m. (see flyer here in Weekly). Staff will be covering topics such as public safety/crime, weed abatement/fire hazards, blight, economic development, Measure P/street maintenance. We look forward to a safe and engaging exchange of ideas and plans on how to make Vallejo a better place for all. Respectfully, Mike Malone Vallejo City Manager 2

PB Cycle 9 Idea Collection is Open! How would you make Vallejo an even better place? Could we improve a park? Is there a local non-profit that could use some funding to support an extraordinary program? Do you have a beautification project in mind? What about an after-school project? As a resident of Vallejo, you are a local expert, and the Participatory Budgeting (PB) process wants to hear your ideas for potential projects. The ideas you submit today could be considered and developed into proposals for the May/June 2024 PB ballot.

Val l e jo W ee kl y

Cycle 9 of the Participatory Budgeting process will fund up to $500,000 worth of projects. Capital infrastructure projects must be implemented on City of Vallejo property and have a max budget request of $150,000. Program and service projects are usually implemented by local non-profits and partner agencies like the Vallejo City Unified School District or Greater Vallejo Recreation District. Program and service projects can request up to $37,500. Community members and non-profit organizations can submit ideas and their complete proposals online at myvallejo.com/pb9. Non-profit 501(c)3 organizations interested in being an implementing partner must complete a prequalification application online by Sunday, October 22 at 11:59 p.m. You can submit your application in-person at City Hall. In Cycle 9, community members also have the opportunity to assist with the PB process as an outreach volunteer or a budget delegate, by filling out a volunteer form online. What projects won last cycle? – Visit the MyVallejo website for details on the Cycle 8 winning projects. It all starts with you and your idea! 12

Val l e jo W ee kl y

Meet Au Jus and Gravy, a bonded pair of kittens that will deliver twice as much joy! Au Jus (left) is a super-sociable dilute Tortoiseshell who will nudge her head against you until you respond with lots of praise and petting. Gravy, the gray and white hunk on the right, is also super friendly and is always up to new antics. Together, the siblings are playful, curious, nonstop purr machines! Au Jus and Gravy both love to be held and make new human pals. They enjoy making feline friends, too! To meet this delightful duo, visit HSNB.org to fill out our cat adoption interest application.

HUMANE SOCIETY PETs OF THE WEEK IKE German Shepherd Dog, male, age 7 years old

Val l e jo W ee kl y

We like Ike! This sweet, gentle German Shepherd is calm and kind to everyone he meets. He’s a big boy at 100 pounds, but he walks like a dream on a leash. Ike LOVES to romp in our play yard and toss around his toys and play with our volunteers. (He looks like a pup when he plays; it’s adorable.) Ike is gentle around other dogs, even when they bark at him while he’s walking past. Once in a while, Ike will bark back as if to say, “rRespect your elders.” Most of the time Ike is quiet and reserved, like a proper gentleman. He’d love to be in a home where he could take leisurely walks around the neighborhood and hang out at his person’s feet (or on the couch if they offer). If you’d like to meet Ike, go to HSNB.org and fill out a dog adoption application.

CALLING ALL FERRY RIDERS – WE NEED YOUR INPUT! The operators of the San Francisco Bay Ferry are working on a project to reconfigure the existing Vallejo Ferry Terminal. The project will reduce annual maintenance costs and impacts on the environment, increase operational safety, and improve the overall rider experience.

Val l e jo W ee kl y

An environmental study is underway, and we’re asking for feedback on three alternatives, each with different access points around the perimeter of the basin (see figure on the back): • Alternative 1 and 2 propose access from outside of the basin (southwest and northwest corners respectively) with a “dog-leg” design providing pedestrian access to the ferry. • Alternative 3 proposes extended pedestrian access from the existing ferry terminal access point. • Each option will provide more passenger queuing area, improve operational safety, and reduce commute times.

Sign up for the upcoming virtual public meeting or share your input by scanning the QR code. For more information, visit www.weta.sanfranciscobayferry.com/current-projects/vallejo-ferry-terminal-reconfiguration-project 24
