Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. That’s why the Vallejo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is on a mission to help save lives by hosting a community blood drive on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, from 10 am to 3 pm (PST) at the Solano County Fairgrounds (Solano Race Place) in #Vallejo. The need for blood is constant, but only 3 percent of the U.S. population donates. By rolling up a sleeve, donors can play a critical role in the treatment of accident and burn victims, heart
surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. African American blood donors have a unique ability to help patients with sickle cell disease and support the health of our community. The Red Cross critically needs Black & African American donors, as well as all those who have not given before, to give blood. To make an appointment please visit redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code VACDSTS Also, completion of a RapidPass® online health history questionnaire found at RedCrossBlood. org/rapidpass is encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

Vallejo, CA — The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is happy to announce the opening of the GVRD Sports Gym. After years of work to bring a gymnasium under the management of the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (https:// www.gvrd.org/), the district has secured a new lease agreement with the local school district to manage the shuttered gym and fields at Franklin Middle School. The district will use Measure K funds, general funds and program fees to maintain the facilities and plan new recreation programming at the site. The facility will be home of GVRD’s Junior Warriors program, open gym for pickleball, basketball, and an assortment of other classes, camps, leagues, and events. More facility and field upgrades are on the horizon as well thanks to Prop 68 Funds. Please join us as we celebrate the opening of the GVRD Sports Gym on Friday, January 19th at 4pm. THE GVRD SPORTS GYM IS LOCATED AT 501 STARR AVE, VALLEJO, CA.
Free drop-in pickleball will be available after the ribbon cutting ceremony from 5-7pm. We thank the community for their support in providing Parks and Recreation services for the City of Vallejo and its residents. GVRD is a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo that provides parks and recreation programs for children, families, and seniors in Vallejo. GVRD operates primarily by means of locally controlled funding and receives revenue from fees for services, park entrances, programs, and facility rentals. Grants and park dedication permit fees assist in the provision for new park development projects and ongoing maintenance. YOGI American Pit Bull Terrier, male, young
23
Yogi is a gorgeous tri-colored American Pit Bull mix. Yogi is 1.5 years old and still a total puppy — a bit clumsy and goofy — but in the most adorable way. At 64 pounds he hasn't quite reached full size yet, but he's working on it. He adores everyone he meets, and he's curious about everything!
Yogi greets the day with his tail and his tongue wagging. He plays well with other dogs and he's great at taking cues from them about what's "OK play." Yogi is still working on his leash skills, but he's very smart so we're confident he'll pick it up quickly. Yogi can get very passionate about toys so a calm, confident handler is recommended. If you think you might be Yogi's very own "Boo-Boo" bear, go to HSNB.org and fill out a dog adoption interest application.

WHAT: Join historian and journalist Brendan Riley as he describes another Mare Island legacy. The Navy’s first land-based prison was built on Mare Island in 1868, and that prison soon became infamous throughout the fleet. The Navy was in transition from a time when ship’s officers punished errant sailors by flogging them with a “cat o’ nine tails.” Following an 1850 congressional ban on flogging, the Navy experimented with alternative punishments, but it soon became clear a landbased prison system was needed.

Breath is slow, long, and deep. Breath patterns may switch from abdominal breathing to breathing combined with speech sounds. Movements are typically gentle and smooth, aimed for relaxation. Mind regulation includes focusing one’s attention and visualization. Dynamic (active) qigong techniques primarily focus on body movements, especially movements of the whole body or arms and legs. Meditative (passive) qigong techniques can be practiced in any posture that can be maintained over time and involve breath and mind exercises, with almost no body movement.
