A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

It was great to meet many of you at the Memorial Day events at Mare Island Naval Cemetery and City Hall on Monday. The event speakers, flags, flyovers, and broad community participation were moving and beautiful ways to pay respects to those who sacrificed so much to secure the freedoms we all enjoy today. We have many photos in the Weekly from these events, so please enjoy viewing the moments captured.

One of Vallejo’s defining characteristics is our cultural diversity. Summer brings a number of amazing community events celebrating our cultures and artistry. A summer full of great events kicks off this coming Saturday with Pista Sa Nayon on Mare Island and the Battle on the Bay Downtown Car Show. This Monday, in front of City Hall at 10 am, we will also have a Pride Flag Raising Ceremony. Please make sure to get out with your family and friends and enjoy the wonderful weather and special events in Vallejo!

BATTLE ON THE BAY Car Show

The BATTLE ON THE BAY Car Show, Hop, Concert, and Festival is scheduled for June 1, 2024. The event will take place from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with vehicle registration from 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM. A donation of $35 is required for vehicle entry and $30 for motorcycles and bicycles. The festival is welcoming all makes and models of these vehicles. The event promises to offer a kids zone among other attractions and emphasizes

that it is a family-friendly event free of charge.

The proceeds from the event will benefit T.E.A.M. HOPE, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization involved in community programs. The car show will be held at 505 Santa Clara Street, Vallejo, CA, in the downtown area.

Participants and attendees are reminded that there will be no alcohol and no burnouts allowed at the event.

In honor of Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are proud to continue our Staff highlights with Vallejo Police Department’s Officer Himanshu Saini:

Q: How many years have you worked at Vallejo?

A: I have worked for Vallejo Police Department for 2 years.

Q: Why is AAPI Heritage Month important to you?

A: AAPI Heritage Month provides an opportunity for me to connect with fellow Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, to share stories, experiences, and aspirations. It's a time to build bridges and strengthen bonds within our community, as well as with other minority groups,

in the pursuit of equality and justice for all.

Q: What is your ethnic background? How has being AAPI shaped your life?

A: I am Indian Punjabi and AAPI Heritage Month serves as a reminder of the resilience and perseverance of our ancestors and elders who paved the way for future generations. It's a tribute to their sacrifices and achievements, inspiring us to continue striving for progress and empowerment in our own lives and communities. This motivates me to ensure a safe and happy community.

Q: What do you love most about your work at Vallejo?

A: Being part of the police force allows me to actively contribute to the safety and well-being of Vallejo residents. Every day presents an opportunity to make a tangible difference by upholding the law, responding to emergencies, and working to prevent crime. This sense of purpose drives me to give my best effort in every aspect of my role, whether it's patrolling the streets, investigating incidents, or providing support to those in need.

Q: What are your favorite sports and activities?

A: In my downtime, I enjoy football and working on cars. Football serves as a form of entertainment and relaxation for me. I enjoy the strategic elements of the game, the thrill of competition, and the sense of camaraderie that comes with supporting my favorite team. Whether it's watching a game at home or catching it live at a stadium, football provides a welcome escape from the stresses of daily life. On the other hand, working on cars is a hands-on hobby that allows me to unwind and engage in a different type of problem-solving. Whether it's routine maintenance, repairs, or modifications, I find satisfaction in the tangible results of my efforts. There's a sense of accomplishment that comes

with diagnosing issues, sourcing parts, and seeing a project through to completion.

Q: What do you love most about your culture?

A: Food is a huge deal in Indian culture, and for me, it's not just about filling my belly—it's a taste of home, family, and tradition. Whether it's homemade curry or a plate of samosas from my favorite spot in town, every bite is a flavorful reminder of where I come from. And then there's Bhangra. Picture this: the beat of the dhol drum, feet stomping, hips swaying—all in sync with a group of friends. It's not just a dance; it's a burst of energy that connects me to my Punjabi roots and gets me grinning from ear to ear.

Q: What is your favorite food? Where is your favorite restaurant in Vallejo?

A: My favorite food is steak. When I'm craving steak, Manny's Steakhouse is my favorite spot in Vallejo.

Q: What is your favorite music?

A: My favorite music is rap. I like rap because the stories, the culture, and the way rap speaks to real-life experiences. It's like poetry set to a beat, and I love how it can make you think, feel, and resonate with the artist.

Q: Who is your role model?

A: Kobe Bryant is my role model because he showed me what it means to be resilient. Despite facing challenges on and off the court, he never gave up. Instead, he used setbacks as motivation to push himself harder. Kobe's determination to succeed, no matter what, inspires me to face my own obstacles with courage and perseverance.

Q: If you could change the world, what would you do?

A: If I could change the world, I'd strive to make happiness more widespread. Because when people are happy, they're more inclined to spread positivity and kindness, making the world a

better place for everyone.

Q: How can we best start with change in Vallejo?

A: Hire more police officers to make sure the city is provided with fast and effective law enforcement.

Q: Are you fluent in any other languages?

A: I am fluent in Punjabi and Hindi languages. I would like to say a few words in Punjabi,  "Maan neeva maat uchi" translates to staying humble regardless of the times. This phrase emphasizes the importance of dignity and selfrespect, suggesting that maintaining one's integrity and values leads to elevated standing and honor. It reflects the idea that upholding moral principles and staying true to oneself ultimately results in a respected and esteemed position.

Q: What message would you like to share about AAPI in Vallejo?

A: For the Vallejo community, I would like to take a moment to recognize and appreciate the significant contributions of our Asian-American and Pacific Islander residents. As we strive for inclusivity and unity, let us stand in solidarity against discrimination of any kind. Together, let's foster an environment where diversity is celebrated, and every individual is respected and valued. By embracing our differences, we can build a stronger and more cohesive Vallejo for all.

Employee Highlight: Kenny Lim, Assistant Engineer, Vallejo Water Department

What is your job with the Vallejo Water Department?

My position with the City of Vallejo Water Department is Assistant Engineer. The Vallejo Water Department has been such a pleasure to work for because of the diversity, very much like Vallejo itself. The Water Department is filled with various individuals who are knowledgeable, hardworking, hilarious, and quirky from different backgrounds that meshes so well together. Since joining the Water Department, I have been inspired by the passion of fellow associates to continue to help push for a lasting impact on our water system for our community. It’s been exciting to be a part of the many projects Vallejo have in the works and how the city will continue to evolve (like the progress made by the arrival of the new Costco). Also assisting our Water Communications Manager with occasional hijinks in the office has been a bonus.

What accomplishments (professionally or personally) are you most proud of?

One of my proudest accomplishments that I enjoyed was my senior project at Cal State University, Sacramento. My team and I researched and built a multi-axis tilting solar panel that would move according to the sun’s position and seasonal weather changes for higher energy collection efficiency. Our study was to determine whether it would be cost beneficial and if it would be a viable option for residential use. In the end, even though it had a higher efficiency of collecting energy, it was not a viable option. The high cost of materials and engineering needed to be able to mount on a residential roof proved to be a terrible option. All in all, it was a great sense of accomplishment when you can see a conceptual design come to fruition after all the work you go through from multiple design changes, calculations, and programming.

Have you always wanted to be an engineer?

How did you end up in this role?

After discovering that I did not have the personality nor the penchant for public speaking (and therefore ruling out sportscasting), I decided to be an engineer! Becoming an engineer was something that made sense due to my aptitude to math, science, and mechanics.

What are you reading, watching, or listening to right now? Are there any AAPIrelated books, shows, or podcasts you’d recommend?

A movie that I would recommend that I recently watched is “Past Lives” by Celine Song. A story of connection and reincarnation bringing together a compelling story of “what-ifs.” Another show I would recommend is “Shogun” because of how Hiroyuki Sanada made sure to produce a show with historically accurate depictions of feudal Japan. It’s like Game of Thrones but with Samurais!

What does AAPI Heritage Month mean to you, and why is it important to celebrate it?

To be completely honest, AAPI Heritage Month is new to me. I am not sure what it means to me yet, but it is amazing to have a month that showcases our culture with others. Being able to showcase our heritage allows us a chance to share with others our culture, background, and traditions that have shaped our personal lives and upbringings.

Memorial Day Ceremony

On Monday, May 27th, the Mare Island Naval Cemetery in Vallejo, California, became a focal point of reverence and remembrance as the community gathered to honor the fallen heroes of the United States Armed Forces. Hosted by the Vallejo Navy League in partnership with the National Cemetery Administration, the Memorial Day ceremony featured a series of poignant tributes to those who sacrificed their lives in service to their country. The event commenced at 9:00 AM, and saw a strong turnout from the

community, underscoring the enduring respect and gratitude for our nation’s veterans.

This Memorial Day ceremony not only celebrated the legacy of those buried at Mare Island Naval Cemetery, which dates back to 1856 and includes three Medal of Honor recipients, but also reinforced the community's commitment to remembering and honoring the sacrifices made for the nation's freedom. Join in the fun with a variety of events for youth and families brought to you by the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD). GVRD is a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo that provides parks and recreation programs for children, families, and seniors in Vallejo. GVRD operates primarily by means of locally controlled funding and receives revenue from fees for services, park entrances, programs, and facility rentals. Grants and park dedication permit fees assist in the provision for new park development projects and ongoing maintenance.

The GVRD Main Office (registrations & reservations) is temporarily relocated to Cunningham Aquatic Complex (801 Heartwood Ave). Open M-F 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. All GVRD Board & Committee Meetings are held at 401 Amador St (administration, finance, & human resources). The playground at Terrace Park will be closed through April for renovations.
