WEEK LY
message from mike Hello, Vallejo! As we switch gears into the New Year, I’d like to update you on some of the road projects coming up with Public Works. For each Message from me this year, I look forward to including projects that our Staff are currently working on to improve the City of Vallejo: In February, Staff will request Measure P funding for an initial roadway surface treatment project targeting some residential streets in Districts 2, 3, 4, and 5. Slurry Seal restores roadway surface and is a preservation technique, which may be done on streets that meet certain criteria such as streets with PCI (pavement conditions index) levels above 60, with minimal structural damage below the surface. This project will also include the upgrade of curb ramps to meet current ADA regulations. Pending Measure P allocation, construction is scheduled for late Summer 2024.

Other Capital Improvement Projects that Public Works is managing which will include pavement repair and rehabilitation are the following: • Redwood Street Road Diet: Pavement repair and rehab on Redwood Street between Tuolumne Street and Broadway Street • Bay Trail -Vine Trail Gap Closure: Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) which is a complete road replacement on Meadows Drive between Sonoma Blvd and Severus Drive (1.1 miles) and a fog seal surface treatment on Meadows Drive between Severus Drive to Catalina Way (1/3 miles) • Recently awarded (by Council 12/23) : (1) Tuolumne Street from Tennessee Street to Florida Street; and (2) Georgia Street from Rollingwood Street to Columbus Parkway • Mini Drive between Sonoma Blvd and Roleen Drive was recently repaved and pavement striping is scheduled for when the weather has cleared up. • Springs Road east of I-80 is currently in design for a road diet and pavement rehab, and should be in construction in 2025.

Looking forward to seeing these projects and more underway for 2024! Respectfully, Mike Malone Vallejo City Manager

WHAT: Join historian and journalist Brendan Riley as he describes another Mare Island legacy. The Navy’s first land-based prison was built on Mare Island in 1868, and that prison soon became infamous throughout the fleet. The Navy was in transition from a time when ship’s officers punished errant sailors by flogging them with a “cat o’ nine tails.” Following an 1850 congressional ban on flogging, the Navy experimented with alternative punishments, but it soon became clear a landbased prison system was needed.

Educating Vallejo’s Next Generation of Water Engineers “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” – Malcolm X Glen Kinion has been doing something you might not expect from an Engineering Technician at the Vallejo Water Department.
Val l ej o W ee kl y
Throughout the Fall, Kinion, who is an Engineer Technician II with the Vallejo Water Department, volunteered on his own time at Vallejo High School to teach Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) to juniors and seniors. Computer-Aided Drafting is not a regular class offered by Vallejo High School, but through the help of the Vallejo Water Department’s Engineering Department and mentorship program, students can learn about and develop this unique skill.
14
Kinion’s teachings involve hands-on work to create 3-D computer models. Through software, he shows students how to design cubes, complex shapes, and even a speaker box and woofer to play music. “I try to make the instruction relevant,” explains Kinion. “One of the Vallejo Water Department’s
most important values is to actively support the community we serve, and working with Vallejo students is a wonderful way for Water Engineering staff to embody our important value of being of service,” explains Water Director Beth Schoenberger. “I am proud that Water staff can help support the career and education goals of the next generation of Vallejo’s leaders and, perhaps, water engineers! And if we can inspire some young minds who might be interested in a future career with the Vallejo Water Department, everyone is better off.” Vallejo Water has a lot of Vallejoans employed on the team, and we are very proud of that. Kinion teaches in the biology classroom of VCUSD’s 2020 Teacher of the Year, Vivek Beckford-Nelson. “I enjoy being able to provide students with a basic introduction to CAD,” Kinion says. “I hope that I was able to introduce them to some of the different careers, using CAD, that they might not have considered before.” To continue a yearlong investment in Vallejo’s youth, this spring, under the mentorship of the Water Department’s Senior Civil Engineer, Dakari Barksdale, CAD students will complete an engineering project to enter into a design competition.
