DEFEND YOUR HOME FROM WILDFIRES There is no doubt that fire season is here. With record temperatures already recorded this year, firefighters across the state are bracing for another intensive round of large-scale wildfires. Residents can do their part in preventing destructive wildfires and reducing the impact they have on our community. To help do your part, the Vallejo Fire Department advises the following: KEEP YOUR PROPERTY MAINTAINED Vegetation fires reach uncontrollable levels due to heavy fuel loading. In addition, dead and dry vegetation and backyard clutter feed wildfires to extreme levels, making them nearly impossible for firefighters to manage and contain. Vallejo Recology provides weekly yard waste pick-ups. Just make sure to cut the vegetation down into sizes that fit easily into the green waste bin. CREATE DEFENSIBLE SPACE As mentioned above, a cluttered yard is dangerous. Create a defensible

property by ensuring the closest five feet of land around your home is completely clear of all highly flammable materials. Think of this as your “Ember Resistant Zone.” The next zone, the area of land that lies from five to 30 feet from the perimeter of your house, should be well maintained, too. This space should be clear of dead plants, have only well-trimmed trees and shrubbery, and no areas of accumulated highly flammable materials such as woodpiles. Lastly, if your property extends out to 100 feet from the perimeter of your residence, ensure that the vegetation is not overgrown or densely planted. Fires cannot burn continuously if the vegetation that they consume is spaced apart. USE FIRE-WISE LANDSCAPING Do you have plans to refresh your yard? Avoid planting Cypress and Juniper trees as they tend to be more flammable. Incorporate non-flammable yard scaping materials such as decorative rocks and ensure that any new foliage that you plant is well spaced apart and easy to maintain. For more useful fire safety information, visit the Vallejo Fire Prevention page.

HOW TO RECYCLE YOUR USED MATTRESS It is estimated that millions of mattresses and box springs reach the end of their lives in California every year. The bulky nature of mattresses and the lack of affordable, convenient recycling options has resulted in significant illegal dumping costs to local jurisdictions throughout the state. Fortunately, used mattresses are highly recyclable (between 80-90 percent of each mattress by weight), and specific components such as steel and polyurethane have positive market value. Click here for more information. Recology offers a free mattress drop-off service. Please visit this website for additional drop off locations. Have you purchased a mattress from a local retailer this year? If yes, did the shopkeeper provide details for proper disposal of your old mattress? If they did not, please contact shelee. loughmiller@cityofvallejo.net or derek. crutchfield@cityofvallejo.net to send them a friendly reminder that they are responsible for doing so. June 18, 2021
