FIRE PREVENTION WEEK The City of Vallejo and the Vallejo Fire Department join fire departments across the nation in recognizing Fire Prevention Week from October 3 - 9. The following simple tips and reminders will help to keep your home safe from fire-related emergencies. • A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, both inside and outside of sleeping areas. Check your smoke detectors regularly by holding down the “TEST” button. A working detector will beep loudly. • Cooking is the number one cause of home fires. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period turn off the stove. Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a “kid-free zone” of three feet around the stove. • Keep combustible objects at least three feet away from portable heating devices. Check to make the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over. • Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames. • As always, if you experience a fire emergency, immediately move to a safe location and call 9-1-1. 6
