Bronze Medallion/Cross/Standard First Aid & CPR Combo

Take the first step in becoming a certified swim instructor, lifeguard and potentially working on the pool deck during the day! Participants will develop stroke efficiency, endurance, lifesaver rescue techniques and resuscitation skills to prepare for various aquatic situations. They will be exposed to the LSS program and ongoing leadership development. It is recommended that candidates complete Teen 5/Adult 5 or Star Patrol. 100% attendance and active participation are mandatory. Designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in an aquatic facility and deep end spinal rollovers. Pre NLS

Pre NLS is a good preparation course leading up to NLS. In this course you will focus on fitness, endurance, spinals and resuscitation skills. Must be 14 years old and possess a current Bronze Cross. LSS Assistant Instructors

Through classroom learning, in-water practice and volunteer scheduled hours, the Lifesaving Society’s Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. This course provides an introduction to swimming instruction and competencies required for successful teaching. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching as they master basic progressions. The roles and responsibilities of instructors and their assistants are emphasized. The trainer will make arrangements on the first day of the course concerning setting up the volunteer hours. Prerequisites: 14Y+ as of the first day of the course with current Bronze Cross certification or higher. 100% attendance and active participation is mandatory. This is the last step in becoming a fully certified instructor and qualified to be employed by the City of Waterloo! Learn to instruct the LSS program from parent and tot up to the leadership program including Bronze Medallion and Cross. Prerequisites: current Bronze Cross or NLS award within two years. LSS Assistant Instructors is considered an asset. Must be 16Y+ by the last day of this course. LSS Standard First Aid & CPR C

Gain comprehensive training in all aspects of first aid and CPR for an in-depth understanding of legal aspects, spinal injuries, heat/cold injuries, bone/joint injuries, abdominal/chest injuries, burn and medical emergencies. Participate in additional training, maintenance, data management and reporting protocols when the AED unit is used for defibrillation purposes. National Lifeguard Service (NLS)

This is the highest lifeguard training award in the country and the basic certification required to lifeguard as recognized by the Ontario Health Act. This course emphasizes teamwork, leadership, emergency procedures and accident prevention. Bring your own pocket mask and whistle. Pocket masks are available at the admission desk for $30.00. Prerequisites: 16Y+ by the last day of course, must have Bronze Cross and current Standard First Aid and CPR C. 100% attendance and active participation are mandatory. Take the first step in becoming a certified Instructor/Trainer with the Lifesaving Society. You will be able to instruct assistant instructors and instructor courses once volunteer teachings are completed. A great way to pass on your superior teaching knowledge and expertise to a new group of potential trainers. Prerequisites: 18Y+ by the last day of course, must have current LSS Instructors, NLS, Bronze Cross Examiners and LSS Advanced Instructors. Previous teaching experience and leadership instructing at a minimum of two years is a must. 100% attendance and active participation are mandatory. CLINICS, WORKSHOPS & RECERTS HIIT the Liquid Weight Room - CALA Workshop

HIIT the Liquid Weight Room with aqua bands & loops, aqua bender balls, and aqua gymstick, combining strength with stretch. A variety of moves and motions can be performed to help improve cardio, strength and flexibility. Use the resistance of water and/or add equipment and challenge participants to reach into their anaerobic training zone – burning calories and generating lots of body heat! Figure out what you like and experience a workout that you can modify to fit any level of fitness and any age. The aqua bands and loops come all the way from the UK, offering two levels of resistance, Light–Original and Heavy–Extreme. Registration through the CALA organization. This course is approved by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. Standard first aid holders can recertify their Lifesaving Society SFA certification once. To renew subsequently, award holders must repeat the full SFA course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertification and original course. Holders of SFA certificates from other agencies may not recertify
