FROM THE DIRECTOR
2014 has been a very busy year, and as we look toward the last few months of the year, we will not be slowing down! Many new programs are being introduced; reaching out to more age groups. Bingo Brunch has been very successful in providing great social opportunities for older adults. Lego Robotics and the Youth Engineering Programs are providing new opportunities for kids from 6 to 12 years of age. With the Fall/Winter Grand Guide, you can explore everything we are offering this season. Westfield Parks and Recreation is here to serve you. We need to know what you would like to see offered and when. Please share this information with our Program Coordinator, Brittany Goger. This publication also includes information on the Special Events. There are some Grand Events yet to come in 2014! Movies in the Park hosted at Asa Bales Park continues until September 26th; on September 12th and 13th we are pleased to host Voices From the Past Living History Walk starting as Asa Bales Park and continuing to Old Friends Cemetery Park; hold on to your hat when the derby cars whiz by at the Grand Junction Derby and Street Festival on October 4th; celebrate the season with the entire Westfield community at "Westfield in Lights: A Downtown Westfield Tradition” on Saturday, December 6th. There is additional information on each event in this edition of the Grand Guide. We have planned many great family events for this season. You may have noticed many new amenities in the parks over the summer. We were able to add new 2 to 5 year old play equipment in Simon Moon Park. Two phases of the Monon Trail south of State Road 32 were, or are being, completed. Additionally, we are finishing up four trail connection projects. We have been working with many Eagle Scouts and want to thank them for their contributions to our community. Alec Brooks’ disc golf course project was sponsored by the Westfield Lion’s Club in Asa Bales Park; Walter Brown installed a covered swing in Simon Moon Park; Devin McCleary will be planting trees at the future site of Osborne Park; and Patrick Hester installed four free library boxes, of which one is on the Monon Trail. Marissa Barrows will complete a butterfly garden on the south side of Asa Bales Park as her Gold Award for the Girl Scouts. In closing I want to thank all of our volunteers, sponsors and supporters who make all of what we do possible. Sincerely, we could not do what we do without your support. You are an intricate part of everything we do. Thank you! I hope to see you in the parks…. Melody Jones, CPRP, CPSI Director, Westfield Parks and Recreation

WESTFIELD IN BLOOM: planting pride in our community
Westfield in Bloom (WIB) is a volunteer committee with a mission to instill a greater sense of civic pride and promote beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. WIB, in partnership with Westfield Parks & Recreation, is currently made up of four sub-committees, each with its own unique projects and goals: Floral, Heritage, Community, and Environmental Awareness. The committee is always looking for new members, and anyone is welcome to attend the meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Main Street Programming Center, 330 E. Main Street.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE
HERITAGE COMMITTEE Do you have an interest in the history of Westfield? Join the Heritage Committee and get involved in making history come to life! The goal of this group is to combine resources with organizations such as the Westfield Washington Historical Society in an effort to heighten the community’s awareness of Westfield’s heritage. In 2014, the Heritage Committee will be hosting the fourth annual “Voices from the Past” living history walk. “Voices from the Past” is a unique way to learn about Westfield’s history through the lives of former citizens. Attendees are guided on a journey into the past through two historic cemeteries where they hear first person interpretations of some of Westfield’s historic citizens, portrayed by Westfield Playhouse actors. Tour guides are needed. To learn more about this event, go to pages 3 and 6. Get involved with planning one of Westfield’s most unique events by joining the Heritage Committee!
The EAC was formed to help promote an environmentally sustainable community by increasing environmental awareness in Westfield. Get involved in this great group and be a part of developing the 2014 initiatives! One goal will be continuing the Adopt-aPrairie program to help maintain the prairie establishment at Freedom Trail Park. Your organization, group, family, team, or company can “own” a section of the prairie at Freedom Trail Park in exchange for helping maintain it—only a three day per year commitment!
COMMUNITY COMMITTEE The primary initiative of the Community Committee is participation in Plant a Row (PAR) for the Hungry. PAR is rooted in the gardeners’ tradition of sharing bountiful harvest with others. The plan is simple – we ask you to plant an additional row of vegetables, fruits, or herbs in your garden and deliver the harvest to one of our drop-off sites, and the donated produce will be delivered to local food pantries. Through PAR, citizens are able to truly be a part of their community and help those in need. In the last four years, well over two tons of fresh produce has been donated to local food pantries. Much of this produce came from the PAR community garden. The committee is always looking for active members to help plan, plant, and maintain the gardens, as well as promote the initiative throughout the community. Get involved in this wonderful program by joining the committee or simply by planting an extra row in your own garden!

PARKS & RECREATION
There are so many activities and events occurring in Westfield, it is difficult to find where we should start! We have accomplished so much this year, but what we truly want to share with you are the ideas and projects in the works to better our future. In June the Westfield City Council approved a revision to the Special Event Policy allowing the Parks Department to make available the Main Street Facility for rent. Consisting of several rooms and an expansive downtown patio, this space will be perfect for your next special event. Contact Jordan McBride in the Parks Administrative Office for details.
Grand Junction’s development and exposure is something we are very proud to say is part of Westfield’s future. We hope you have been seeing and hearing about it. A year long process to develop a strategic plan for the downtown area including and surrounding Grand Junction, known as the Cultural Collaborative, will be finishing their research late this year. This volunteer-led effort will help enhance and foster the downtown (Grand Junction) stakeholder’s cooperation to maximize Grand Junction’s potential as a destination. GRAND JUNCTION PARK/PLAZA will be the centerpiece of Grand Junction. The ten acre park will include beautiful architecture, fountains, green space, enhanced waterways, plaza, ice skating, and an entertainment venue. However the best thing of all is it will create a gathering space, a location where connections are made. Land Collective, HWKN and the rest of the design team have assembled to create a masterpiece. The Westfield Parks and Recreation Department is already developing events and programs for this beautiful park. For updated information on the final plans and construction dates please visit the parks website often. Westfield is all about Trails. The new editions of the Westfield Trails Guide
are fresh from the printer. You can pick up a copy at the City Services Center or the Main Street Programming Facility. You can also find this information on our website. We will continue to identify priorities for making connections. The Monon Trail north of State Road 32 is in several different stages. At this time, the crossing of the trail on State Road 32 will take place using the traffic light at Wheeler Road and State Road 32. This light will be programed to stop all vehicle traffic when pedestrians and cyclist have the right of way to cross. Future plans will include a pedestrian bridge over the highway. With the US31 project, INDOT will be building the Monon Trail on the west side of the new Wheeler Road, which will continue to 186th Street. Plans are for this section to be completed by the end of the year. North of 186th, Phase 6 will return to the old railroad corridor and continue to include a trailhead at Monon Elementary School next spring. The trailhead will have paved parking, benches, drinking fountain and restrooms. Phase 7 is from the Monon Elementary School to 216th Street. At
this time land acquisition is taking place for Phase 7. If this goes well, we hope to start construction in 2016. With Phase 7 completed, Westfield will have built the entire length of the Monon Trail through Washington Township. All 8 miles! Hamilton County Parks will continue the project and the connection to Sheridan. Land is being acquired to extend the Midland Trace Trail from Gunther to Gray Road along the east side of the road. Once completed, we will begin the bid continued, page 22

for construction. Our goal is to complete this phase in 2015. Noblesville has plans underway that will start at Gray Road and move east. Other sections of the Midland Trace Trail on the west side are being developed. Westfield Parks and Recreation will be working on land acquisition from Quaker Park over to Austrian Pine Way to make that connection. Other sections of the trail will be completed with new development from Springmill Road over to Ditch.

middle connection will be along 169th Street/David Brown from the Monon Trail to the Natalie Wheeler Trail. And the north connection will be along 181st Street/Hoover Street from the Monon Trail to Asa Bales Park. These three trail connections, along with all of the sidewalks, will be included at the US 31 interchanges. They will make Westfield more connected than ever before. You will be able to walk or bike ride anywhere in the city.

As we mentioned earlier, Grand Junction Park and Plaza plans are being finalized. In order to be able to build in this area, the City needs to create regional detention. Not only will regional detention help with storm water storage for the park but also provide storage for new development in downtown. The Anna Kendall Creek, which will run through Grand Junction, will be accompanied by the Anna Kendall Trail and extend southward from the park. A section of the trail has already been built with the Union Street Flats development and will connect to 161st Street upon completion. The Monon Midland Loop Trails are at three different locations. These trail connections will exist along with the US 31 construction. The southern connection will be along 156th Street from the Monon Trail to the Natalie Wheeler Trail. The

In addition to planning the trail connections and Grand Junction, we are also working on bringing sand volleyball to the park system. We hope to be able to offer league play in the summer of 2015. Additionally, a Low Ropes Challenge Course is being

planned. A ropes course is a challenging outdoor personal development and team building activity. Low elements take place on the ground or only a few feet above ground. The course consists of a series of real and imaginary obstacles designed to challenge groups and individuals to work together to accomplish a task. This course, when finished, will be offered to corporations, scout groups and any organization interested in team building. If you have any interest in either of these new park offerings, please contact our office to get more information. We continue to fundraise and work with the Friends of the Westfield Bark Park. There are no construction plans at this time. Stay tuned on this project. With all that is going on, we understand you may have many questions! Please visit our website, or give us a call if you would like more information.
