letter FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the first edition of The Grand Guide. The Westfield Parks & Recreation Department could not be more excited about this new adventure we are embarking on with all of you. We are now offering recreational programming! With our new facility on Main Street in downtown Westfield, we will be able to start offering a wide selection of programs for all ages, all year long. In our Department’s short history, our focus has been on construction and development. Until recently, building trails, developing parks and working on partnerships for hosting special events has been our primary focus. Expanding the Monon Trail north and the Midland Trace Trail to the east and west should see additional phases in 2013. Connecting trails continues to be a large focus, so we can get neighborhoods connected to the main trail system, and land acquisition for Grand Junction Park and Plaza is in full swing. These projects will continue to keep us extremely busy, but for the first time we are able to expand our efforts by hosting programming opportunities, and registering for programs and reserving park shelters could not be easier with a new online service. We are also thrilled to be able to offer new special events such as the Movies in the Park series which will be featured this summer. We also want to hear from you regarding what you would like to see us offer in the future. We are here to serve you and your family, so please see page 4 for information regarding our programming survey. For more information about programming, parks, and trails in Westfield, please check out our website at www.westfield.in.gov/parks and “Like” the City of Westfield on Facebook. Join us in the parks and at our new facility for the Summer 2013 programming season! Melody Jones, CPRP, CPSI Director, Westfield Parks and Recreation

Check out our new facility! Westfield Parks & Recreation is so excited to start a new chapter by beginning to offer recreational programming opportunities to the community. One of the missing pieces in the past has been a lack of indoor space, but that has all changed! We are very pleased to announce that we now have a presence in downtown Westfield, located at 330 E. Main Street. The building will be solely dedicated to recreational programming and will offer three separate spaces, allowing us to offer a wide variety of programs and classes. Register for a class today, and come check it out! Please note that as we are just beginning to offer programs, the Main Street facility will not be staffed at all times and will only be open when programs are taking place. The Parks & Recreation offices will remain at the Westfield City Service Center, located at 2728 E. 171st Street. If you have questions about programs, please contact Stephanie Baumann, Recreation Program Coordinator, at 317-804-3183 or sbaumann@westfield.in.gov.

Yoga Kidz can help counter the many pressures that today’s children experience. When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s noncompetitive. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Yoga Kidz brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface.

Westfield in Bloom:

planting pride in our community Westfield in Bloom (WIB) is a volunteer committee with a mission to instill a greater sense of civic pride and promote beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. WIB, in partnership with Westfield Parks & Recreation, is currently made up of four sub-committees, each with its own unique projects and goals: Floral, Heritage, Community, and Environmental Awareness. The committee is always looking for new members, and anyone is welcome to attend the meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Westfield City Service Center, 2728 East 171st Street. Floral Committee: WIB’s inaugural committee organizes and participates in beautification projects such as planting the downtown planter boxes, Community Plant Day (see page 21 for details), the Floral Display Competition and more! A predominant color is selected each year to help provide unity throughout the community. This color is utilized in the hanging baskets and planters downtown,

in garden beds in the parks, and residents are encouraged to feature it in their own gardens. The Floral Committee is pleased to announce that the 2013 color is PURPLE! 5th Annual Floral Display Competition: Free and open to residents, neighborhoods, businesses, and organizations, the Floral Display Competition helps keep Westfield beautiful. With 19 categories to choose from, there is something for everyone. Use of the 2013 color (purple) is among the judging criteria used to select the winners, so start planning your gardens today! Please visit our website www.westfield.in.gov/parks for more information about the judging criteria and to register for the 2013 Floral Display Competition. Community Committee: The primary initiative of the Community Committee for its fourth year is participation in Plant a Row (PAR) for the Hungry. PAR is rooted in the gardeners’ tradition of sharing bountiful harvests with others. The plan is simple – we ask you to plant an additional row of vegetables, fruits, or herbs in your garden and deliver the harvest to one of our drop-off sites, and the donated produce will be delivered to local food pantries. Through PAR, citizens are able to truly be a part of their community and help those in need. In the last three years, well over two tons of fresh produce has

been donated to local food pantries. Much of this produce came from the community garden planted by local children at the Westfield Farmers Market and from the PAR committee garden. The committee is always looking for active members to help plan, plant, and maintain the gardens, as well as promote the initiative throughout the community. Get involved in this wonderful program by joining the committee or simply by planting an extra row in your own garden! Local Produce Drop-Off Sites: • Ameriana Bank, 3333 East SR 32, Westfield • Westfield Farmers Market Environmental Awareness Committee: The EAC was formed to help promote an environmentally sustainable community by increasing environmental awareness in Westfield. In 2013, the EAC will be focusing on water conservation education. Committee goals include building a library of resources available to the public through the Parks & Recreation website, and hosting a series of workshops from spring through fall (see page 17 for more details). The EAC will also be concentrating on organizing groups to participate in the Adopt-aPrairie program at the prairie establishment at Freedom Trail Park. Get involved in this great group or join us for one of the workshops!

Heritage Committee Do you have an interest in the history of Westfield? Join the Heritage Committee and get involved in bringing history come to life! The goal of this group is to combine resources with organizations such as the Westfield Washington Historical Society in an effort to heighten community awareness of Westfield’s heritage. In 2013, the Heritage Committee will be hosting the third annual “Voices from the Past” 20

living history walk. “Voices from the Past” is a unique way to learn about Westfield’s history through the lives of former citizens. Attendees are guided on a journey into the past through two historic cemeteries where they hear first person interpretations of some of Westfield’s historic citizens, portrayed by Westfield Playhouse actors. Save the date for this year’s event – September 13-14, 2013!

PARKS & RECREATION

www.westfield.in.gov/parks

The Grand Junction Park and Plaza will be the focal point and new heart of our downtown. Amenities will include: an amphitheater and Great Lawn gathering place for festivals, concerts and special events; an interactive water play area; an arts garden; a full size ice skating rink in the winter months; a hardscape festival boulevard; and a play in nature area. The park and plaza will provide programmable space throughout all seasons. Grand Junction will truly become the place to be in Westfield. For more information regarding the Grand Junction project, please visit us at www.westfield.in.gov/parks. New Amenities at Asa Bales Park: Alec Brooks from Troop #107 will be installing a 9-hole disc golf course at Asa Bales Park as his Eagle Scout project in 2013. The course will extend from the north end of the park at Hoover Street to the section south of the bridge along the internal trail. John Semler from Troop #107 will be constructing a covered swing in the south section of the park as his Eagle Scout project. Look for these exciting new amenities this summer! Shade Structures at Quaker & Freedom Trail Parks: There is no better place to go in the summer with the family than the park, but that sun can get awfully hot! That is why Westfield Parks & Recreation will be adding large shade structures to two of the most popular parks this summer. The shades will cover the benches around the splash park at Quaker Park and over the sand table and benches at Freedom Trail Park. Bollards at Liberty Park: A big thank you to the Westfield High School Lacrosse Team, who completed their community service project at Liberty Park in February. The team installed bollards around the parking lot and thoroughly cleaned up the wetland area.
