The main implementation tool used by the Planning Division is the Comprehensive Zoning By-law, which was updated and approved in 2010. The 97 employees of the Owen Sound Police Service many of whom live and raise our families in Owen Sound enjoy giving back and going above our “job descriptions”. Our members are not only active in various community groups and coaching local sports teams they also give back to numerous Charitable Organizations through the Canadian Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Law Enforcement Torch Run, Alzheimer’s Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Heart and Stroke Society to name a few. The Owen Sound Police Service, while being one of the most proactive police services in the province for its size, continues to expand not only the enforcement and investigative side of policing but also just as importantly focuses on education and crime prevention. With the assistance of provincial grants and the dedication of
personnel, the Owen Sound Police Service ensures that every student in Owen Sound is offered structured and interactive safety lessons. The Owen Sound Police have launched the new “Safe Driving Education” initiative which educates every high school student and other community stakeholders in the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. Students have the opportunity to try our many interactive displays designed to demonstrate how much the use of cell phones, iPods, drugs and alcohol will have on their abilities to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Welcome to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery area, was a maverick, a break-away artist who fused a passion for the wilderness with a new style of skillful and experimental painting; he inspired the formation of the Group of Seven through his transformative portrayal of the natural world.
Canadian Spirit 2014 If It Wasn’t for the War
There’s always something going on at the TOM! Experience what’s made history and what’s happening now in Canadian art, along with hands-on opportunities to engage with the world of art-making. Whether it’s peaceful contemplation or a challenge to the way you see the world, the Tom Thomson Art Gallery has something to excite the maverick in you.
An ambitious program of exhibitions by local, Canadian and international artists makes the Tom Thomson Art Gallery a destination point to experience the ever-changing world of contemporary art. Enjoy new artistic media like video, sound, performance and installation works, alongside traditional fine arts such as painting, sculpture and craft, in exhibitions that showcase current trends in visual art. Exhibitions are accompanied by informative materials and tours are conducted by trained guides —all designed to bring a new dimension to visitors’ enjoyment and appreciation of art and its creation. Established in 1967, the Gallery is named for the iconic Canadian landscape artist Tom Thomson (1877-1917) and houses one of Canada’s largest collections of his work. Thomson, who grew up in the Owen Sound
Canadian Spirit 2014 As well as the important anniversaries of the wars and battles, we are encouraging our partners to consider all the things that came out of these events, particularly, The Great War, that illustrate our “Canadian Spirit”. For example, Canada established its sense of national identity, women got the vote, and the Canadian National Railway was completed. There is much to celebrate and a myriad of stories to tell across our great country. Canadian Spirit encourages us to do so. We will also be creating a series of community “Victory Gardens” in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of World War One and the 75th Anniversary of World War Two. Various community groups and businesses will be engaged to plant, maintain and harvest these gardens with the intentions of the gardens providing fresh produce to festival vendors as well as benefitting local groups like OSHARE, The Salvation Army, CMHA and the United Way. As such Canadian Spirit 2014 presents a multi-layered, manyfaceted opportunity to explore and discover Thomson, and his legacy, in a way never before presented.
2014 COMMUNITY & SUMMER ACTIVITIES / WWW.OWENSOUND.CA

The TOM is pleased to be partnering with the Grey County Chef’s Forum for Homegrown activities. From culinary bistro vendors, to craft beer, wine and spirits, to a farmers’ market, cooking demonstrations featuring talented local chefs, musicians and entertainers, Homegrown will celebrate the taste of our region.

The Canadian Spirit series will balance the honour owed to the past with the needs of the present, while always looking forward to the future.

Seven days a week all summer The Marine & Rail Museum is located in the historic CN Rail Station on Owen Sound’s harbourfront. It focuses on our marine, rail and industrial era.
Travel back in time to Owen Sound’s industrial past and enjoy the artifacts, scale models, archival photos and interactive stations throughout the Museum. Recreation and Parks From the desk of the
Director of Community Services I am pleased to introduce the 2014 Community Guide. We have organized the information into 3 main sections: City Services; Arts and Culture; and Recreation and Parks. I hope that you enjoy the new format of the Guide and find it easy to use.
2014 COMMUNITY & SUMMER ACTIVITIES / WWW.OWENSOUND.CA
The guide is filled with ways to be active and healthy this summer.

The Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound have generously supported a new Skate and Bike Park at Victoria Park. We look forward to putting the finishing touches on the park this spring and to enjoying a summer filled with bikes, scooters and skateboards! Late in 2013, we completed trail upgrades at Stoney Orchard Park on the City’s east side in co-operation with the Tom Thomson Trail Group. This trail offers some of the best views of the Owen’s Sound on Georgian Bay. Access the trail off of 9th Ave at the end of 23rd Street East and enjoy a hike. The City is pleased to be partnering with Owen Sound Minor Soccer and Keith Mason to present 2 fun filled weeks of soccer camp at the Kiwanis Soccer Complex. Check out the Summer Hockey Skills and Powerskating camps and keep your skills sharp for next season. Registration details are in this guide or you can find them at www.owensound.ca. Just want to skate this summer – each week there are opportunities for public skating or book an hour of Last Minute Ice and enjoy a cool game of shinny with your friends.
The Tall Ship Liana’s Ransom, an 85-foot topsail schooner is returning to Owen Sound on Canada Day weekend (June 28 - July 1), offering 90-minute excursions on Owen Sound Bay. Excursion tickets are now available in person at the Roxy Theatre Box Office, or online at www.roxytheatre.ca. The crew dresses in period costume similar to the outfits worn by pirates and privateers of old. During the excursions, passengers are entertained by tales of pirate adventures, with crew members swinging on ropes over the water. Passengers even have the opportunity to fire the ship’s authentic scale model cannons. After enjoying a cruise, plan to take in the annual fireworks display at Kelso Beach Park or enjoy the fireworks from a special fireworks cruise. Plan to make 2014 a memorable Canada Day with your friends and family. There are many ways for you to Celebrate Summer in Owen Sound from Friday night Music and Movies to Sunday Harbour Nights Concerts to free swims at Harrison Park Pool. All the details about these and many other opportunities can be found in this guide.

Emerald Ash Borer Alert (EAB) Ash trees are a significant species in the City’s urban forest, which includes trees on private as well as public lands within the City. Like many Ontario municipalities, Owen Sound faces a threat to its Ash tree population. The exotic, invasive insect pest Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has infested many Ash trees throughout Southern Ontario.
In the spring of 2014, with the potential threat of this pest, Owen Sound City Council approved the Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan to reduce and mitigate the impact of EAB. The first step in the EAB Management Plan is a complete inventory and assessment of the City’s Ash trees, to better understand the true management

• There is a Team Leader on duty during swimming lessons. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s lesson, please feel free to approach the Team Leader on the pool deck. • Our Swimming Instructors are also certified lifeguards! They have gone through approximately 1000 hours of training to become certified with the National Lifeguard Service Award, and the YMCA and Lifesaving Society Swimming Instructor award. • We have lesson guards on duty during all swimming lessons as an ‘extra set of eyes’.

Is This Your Child’s First Time in Swimming Lessons? Please feel free to bring your child for a tour of the pools and change rooms to familiarize them with the facility. Showers and Access to the Pool: All swimmers must shower with soap before entering the pool as per Ontario Health Regulations. Please note that footwear is not allowed on the pool deck. Entrance to the pool is through the change rooms past the shower area. If your child requires assistance after the lesson, please meet him/her at the entrance. Staff will not let the child leave the pool deck until the parent/guardian arrives. First Day of Lessons: Please read the Swim Level Descriptions prior to registering to ensure your child is enrolled in the correct level. You may go to the change room 5 minutes before your child’s lesson is scheduled to begin. Swim classes meet on the pool deck at the start time of the lesson. Please make sure your child knows the swim level he/she is enrolled in. Parents may accompany children to the pool deck before the first lesson to meet the instructor. Parent Participation Day: To find out how your child is progressing, parents are invited to participate in the pool with their child (1 adult per child please) for one lesson! Classes
will end 5-10 minutes early these days to give you a chance to speak to your child’s Instructor about their progress. If you do not wish to go in the pool, take the time after class to find out how your child is progressing. Please let our Team Leader know of any concerns you may have as they come up. Bare feet only on deck please! Dates for Parent Participation Day are as follows: Harrison Park: Session 1: July 11 Session 2: July 25 Again and Again….Each swimming level has a certain number of items that must be performed correctly a minimum of 3 times in order for that item to be complete (according to the standards set by YMCA Canada and the Lifesaving Society.) If a child is unable to complete all of the items during a session, we view this as an “incomplete”, not a failure. Swimming skills have still been learned but more practice is required. It is not unusual to repeat the same swim level several times before mastering the necessary skills and acquiring the endurance that is necessary. Rainy Days at Harrison Park: Lessons will NOT be cancelled. If there is a thunder storm, children will be removed from the pool area and water safety will be reviewed inside. Lost and Found: Please leave all valuables at home. You can store all of your belongings in the tote baskets available at the front entrance during lesson times. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Lost and found items will be kept for two weeks in the tote room and then donated to charity. Refund Policy for all Swimming Lessons: Fees are refundable prior to start date of first class. Refunds will not be given on or after the start of the program except for medical reasons. Medical reasons require a doctor’s note. A service charge of $10.00 is applicable to every refund.

Celebrating 50 years of Service 1964 - 2014 Since being chartered in February 1964, the members of this service club have worked hard to contribute to the community in numerous ways. From supplying playground equipment, to helping provide family swimming and skating programs, summer camp experiences for children, buying much needed items for those in need through crisis programs and donations to the local hospital, Comm-r-ettes keep busy raising funds towards many goals. A sense of fun is important in fundraising as is evidenced by the smiles on the faces of the club’s supporters who attend the yearly yard sale held in early June!
