Marrying craftsmanship and design
“Marrying craftsmanship and design - as a recipe to preserve culture and create economic growth - is what drew my attention while working on economic development in East Asia” says Laila Al-Hamad, founder of Zeri Crafts, a new Kuwaiti brand that aspires to reinterpret and modernize Gulf handicrafts.
Al-Hamad
was intrigued by the burgeoning crafts industries, particularly in Laos and Cambodia: “by investing in modern design, artisans in these countries updated their crafts in such a fresh way; they filled an important gap in the market. It was a win-win for countries both culturally and economically.”
6 www.citypageskuwait.com
This interest lingered in her mind, and in 2007, she came up with the idea of developing something similar for the countries of the Gulf. Being an importer of ideas and culture - triggered in great part by the rapid modernization process in the post-oil discovery period, Gulf countries have lagged in their efforts to preserve craft heritage. With few incentives to thrive and limited demand for their crafts, Gulf artisans - from basket weavers to wood-workers have become a rare breed. In 2010, Zeri Crafts was born. The brand aspires to to reinterpret the richness of Gulf handicrafts by modernizing crafts using contemporary design, fine craftsmanship and exclusive materials. When asked about the company’s name, Al-Hamad responded “The word “zeri” was chosen for its cultural familiarity and symbolism. Zeri refers to the gold thread historically used to adorn clothing in the Gulf, especially women’s thobes (traditional gowns) and men’s bishts (ceremonial cloaks). Zeri thread conveys beauty, lightness, and continuity. This symbolism is at the heart of the brand. The thread is used to connect past, present and future. And just as zeri “adds life” to a black thobe, so too is the company trying to breathe life into our craft heritage.” In May of 2012, Zeri Crafts launched its first collection of unique handwoven silk textiles inspired by Sadu, the traditional weaving of the desert. “The textiles took two years to develop” says Al-Hamad. “In a way, the process long and rigorous - was a homage to Sadu weaving, a bedouin art-form that illustrates the tough life and creative souls of bedouin women.” In 2010, Zeri Crafts sponsored a textile-design competition with the Cardiff School of Art & Design’s Textile department, with the aim of creating modern interpretations of Sadu. The winning designs were subsequently translated into Zeri Crafts’ first line of textiles. “The textiles -- shawls, table runners and cushions -- convey the beauty of Sadu but in a contemporary light. The pieces are all hand-woven in silk, a light and airy fabric that is fit for modern living. As each symbol and pattern carries meaning, we made sure to accentuate the beauty of Sadu patterns as a way of conveying culture”, says Al-Hamad. The two patterns that feature prominently in the textiles are Uwairjan, two-toned triangles that are simple and timeless, and Midhkhar, an equally charming but more complex pattern
that includes the two-toned triangles and diamond patterns. The designs were skillfully brought to life in the renowned weaving atelier of Carol Cassidy and Lao Textiles, with whom Zeri Crafts collaborated. The company also launched a modern version of the Mubkhar, designed by award winning designer Nedda El-Asmar, “The mubkhar plays such a crucial role in our culture, it conveys the warmth and hospitality that Gulf countries are known for. We wanted to give the vessel the elegance it deserves, an object that combines beauty, utility, and culture,” says Al-Hamad. By the sound of it, this seems like the beginning of a promising venture and an exciting cultural journey for this young Kuwaiti company.

Gulf Bank Rekindles Ramadan Spirit by putting a Girgai'an smile on patients’ faces
Gulf Bank staff recently visited the first four hospitals as part of their annual visits to children’s hospital units associated with Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospitals (KAACH), to share the joys of girgai’an with them. Hospital visits include: Ibn Sina, Amiri, NBK, Farwaniya, Al Razi, Zain, and Jahra Hospital. These visits create an authentic Ramadan ambience for children, giving them a chance to enjoy Ramadan, offering them bags filled with Girgai’an treats, in addition to several activities including face painting, henna, hair braiding, as well as interaction with various superheroes from The 99 comic books. Gulf Bank is committed to maintaining its position as part of Kuwait’s integral social fabric and the Bank perceives such visits as a moral obligation to delivering great spiritual support to these young patients.

Certified Professional Coach President of Milestones Coaching
The Gratitude Drug When I started out writing this article I had the biggest writer’s block. I had all these ideas in my head, yelling at me “write about this”, “write about that”. It was a classical tug of war with every idea wanting to take precedence over the other. And then it hit me. I am feeling grateful. I am grateful for this opportunity to be writing in the CityPages magazine and reaching out to readers in my beloved Kuwait. So why not write about gratitude? As a life coach, many of my clients come to me with a specific goal. This goal is to be happy. I get asked this over and over again. “How can I be happy?” “How can I have a happy marriage?” “How can I lead a happy existence?” The question is overwhelming but the answer is quite simple; be grateful! Denis Waitley says “Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed, happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.” Now you might be asking, how is it that being grateful will lead to me being happy? It is quite simple really. When you are focusing on your feeling of gratitude you shift yourself from a place of scarcityand shortage to a place of abundance. You realize that you have so much to be thankful and grateful for. Needless to say that gratitude is one of the most positive feelings which brings with it joy and happiness. Honestly, take it from me, as a life coach I will let you in on a secret. Grateful people make better friends, better spouses, better co-workers, better leaders. When you focus on your feeling of gratitude and know specifically what you are grateful for, you will feel as if you made peace with the world.
l
How to be grateful?
l Be grateful for the hug your daughter gave you before you went to work this morning; it made you feel loved. l Be grateful to the amazingly supportive parents you have; they make you feel like you can conquer the world. l Be grateful to the sun shining today; not only does it warm your office, it also warms your heart a little.
So how do you take this drug I call gratitude? Here are the instructions: Think it, feel it, DO IT! When you want to learn a new skill, like swimming, what do you do? You have to get in a pool and practice, practice, practice. The same is true to thankfulness and gratitude. Here are some basic steps: l Make it a daily practice. Just before you go to sleep every night, think of at least one positive thing that happened that you are grateful for. What an amazingly positive way to end the day! l Share it with your partner. Share with your partner everyday, something that he/she did that made you feel grateful, or that helped make your day a little easier. This will not only help with you being happier, it will make your relationship a better one too. A great-added bonus!
Post one gratitude Tweet each day. Making it public and putting it out in the open is a great way to help you feel grateful and share it with the world.
Do it with your family. Choose one meal a day, where you go around the table asking each one of your family members to share one thing they are grateful for today. It is a great way to start the meal on a positive note, AND a wonderful way to make conversation at the table.
l
Some examples of things you could be grateful for right now:
And just before I let you go, remember; don't wait for a specific thing to happen to be grateful... Just be grateful for everything you have now. When you are in this frame of mind, you will find that quickly, the reasons will find you! P.S. I would love to hear back from you so please feel free to drop me a line on my email: zahrataqi@gmail.com or find me on FB: www.facebook. com/MilestonesCoaching or twitter: @MilestonesCoach

Employee Mentoring Can you Be an Effective Leader & Friend To Your Employees? In the great movie "A Bronx Tale," protégé Colagero asks the gang leader Sonny, "Is it better to be loved or feared?" Sonny replies, "That's a good question. It's nice to be both but it's very difficult. But if I had my choice, I'd rather be feared. Fear lasts longer than love." When running a business, some entrepreneurs don't know how to act. Some think they get the best results when they are feared. Others want to be loved, but are concerned with being seen and/or becoming a pushover. In either case, including variations of each (e.g., you desire to be slightly feared), entrepreneurs who run companies must mentor their employees in order to get them to excel. Typically, when people think of mentoring, two things come to mind-someone outside your company showing you the ropes, or some kind of apprenticeship program. However, I believe you can and should be a mentor and friend to your own employees and team, and not just a boss. This article will show you what mentoring is, why it works, and who in your organization you should spend time mentoring. My favorite definition of mentoring was created by Bozeman and Feeney, who defined it as "a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, social capital, and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development. Mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a person who is perceived to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less (the protégé)."
So How Do I Mentor My Team Members? A leader who is also a mentor cares about their protégés and teammates, and approaches work from the eyes of a servant, not a commander. They know that educating and improving the skills of individual team members will help them and their company be happier, more productive, and more successful. Mentoring also adds a degree of friendship and affection to the workplace. This makes work a lot more pleasant for all employees, and also makes for a work environment that is more conducive to learning, admitting mistakes, and personal growth. To mentor someone, you should invest time with them one-on-one in order to: 1) Teach them their job position's skills 2) Assess what they need to improve and measure their growth 3) Infuse leadership in them, so they are more empowered to solve problems and figure things out on their own without waiting for your answers. 12 www.citypageskuwait.com
Why the Need for Mentoring? Mentoring has been shown to have a positive effect on one's career. One study by Gerard Roche (1979) found that mentored employees were more satisfied with their work and careers than their non-mentored counterparts. It has also been found that mentoring facilitates the socialization of new hires into the organization, reduces turnover, minimizes mid-career adjustments, and enhances the transfer of the entrepreneur or business owner's vision, knowledge, and values. These are the exact things you want - better, happier, more skilled employees who are committed to the vision of your company! This is why mentoring is such a highleverage practice to include in your leadership activities.
Who Should be Mentored? The traditional wisdom is to invest the most support and training in your best and brightest employees. But Delong & Vijayaraghavan (2003) reported that it's a wiser move to support the large middle-base (your team's B-players): "Like all prize-winning supporting actors, B-players bring depth and stability to the companies they work for, slowly but surely improving both corporate performance and organizational resilience... They will never garner the most revenue or the biggest clients, but they also will be less likely to embarrass the company or flunk out... these players inevitably end up being the backbone of the organization." This makes sense to me, however, I prefer to invest more in the hiring process so you only hire "A" players. Then, you can mentor your "A" players and turn them into "A+" players that allow you to dominate your market. As the leader of your business, you are more than just the boss, the visionary, the founder, and CEO. You also play the role of coach and mentor for your team. Because you cannot mentor everyone in your company, particularly as it grows, choose 5 or so employees that you can comfortably mentor. And then have them mentor 5 employees beneath them. Etc. At times in your business, you'll have to be a player yourself in order to score points, win the game, and get results. But over time, you'll see your time allocation changing to include less time spent "playing," and more time spent coaching and mentoring your players to perform under your direction.

Mad Woman and the Little Pirate It
was typically dusty day in Kuwait when I met Pirate next to the trash can affront of my house. He just sat there, a fury ball of unhappiness, and looked at me with his one big green eye. Even though his fur was disheveled and filthy, I could see that his coat below the dirt must have been fluffy; the only white spot surrounded the wide open green eye that pinned me down and the rest of his tiny mouse-size body was pitch black like a dark night. “What’s up, Pirate?” I asked while approaching the little thing. A loud “miau” greeted me and the little kitty ran towards me. It definitely liked the name, I thought. Next thing I knew, the tiny rascal was crawling up my left leg, its nails like thousand needles coming through the jeans and scratching the skin.
and anything as a potential mouse that was about to get away from his merciless claws – the vase on the table was one among his first victims, the picture on the wall, the plant in the corner, and the curtains followed; this all in the first day I brought my tiny friend home and let him free in the living room. All this happened six months ago. Since then, my life has been upside down as well as is my home – thanks to the little Pirate!! There are no paintings on the walls, no vases on the tables, no curtains decorating the windows. All my furniture is covered to protect it from fierce attacks by Pirate, who has grown to a beautiful young cat with a shiny fur and bold look in his sparkling green eye.
Hey, it obviously liked me too, I thought, or: rather screamed. I was being attacked by a kitten!!! But after my first shock I gently grabbed the fur ball with my hands and the wannabe cat gratefully bit me in the finger with its perfectly sharp teeth. Another “miau” and the green eye looked at me in full expectation. Taking a closer look I discovered that its other eye was shut and running tears – this little thing must be in pain! Suddenly I felt the black lump with the white dot purring in my arms and my heart melted away.
There are cat toys on the floors, tables, couches, on the top of the cupboards and cabinets, in sinks, and in the bathtub. Several cat trees and his kitty beds are spread in all the rooms so that he can choose where to play and to sleep. During the day this house belongs to Pirate and he knows what that means – wild runs and jumps and games and scratching and chasing after every real and imaginary mouse or rat the sparkling green eye can find.
After saving him from the cruel streets, bringing him to the vet, having removed his injured eye, giving him his medication, required shots, groomed, fed, neutered, and brought to my home. Pirate was ready to enter the world of humans and leave the streets of Kuwait behind him. Unfortunately, that’s all he decided to leave behind; his bad street habits travelled with him into my life and the little rascal didn’t even think about it to change… Pirate was determined to chase down and destroy every mouse he could find, and he found them everywhere. As matter of fact, I am sure it was because of his one eye that he could not see that well and mixed up everything
The evenings belong to us both: the moment I get back home the fresh hooligan turns into a purring engine of peace and happiness and settles in my lap while watching television. Looking at the damaged furniture, broken glass, and destroyed fabric that decorated my perfect home months ago I must admit – I wasn’t that happy and satisfied with my life as I am now that I have Pirate as a roommate; I will always have my little friend with me, wherever I settle down in the future. Thank you Kuwait for this precious gift!

A Brush Stroke of Genuis Amira Behbehani, an avid artist, is one of the brightest gems on Kuwait’s art scene, having won acclaim with her boundless creativity and original thoughts. Mesmerizing are her paintings in definite lines and bold tints that contain a provocative intensity. You can perceive her philosophical view of significant themes. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious Kuwait galleries such as Dar Al Fanoon and Sultan Gallery and Tilal Gallery as well as FA Gallery. Cave In Realization is her most recent creation; a unique perspective on art by means of putting a concept along with a theory and playing with mirrors and objects. With a distinct style, she has built a new experience for art lovers. CityPages talked to this amazing artist about her personal growth and passion.
Cave In Realization Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Amira Behbehani and I’m a Kuwaiti born painter. It never crossed my mind to become one, but life carried a lot of surprises for me and all were different from the ordinary.
Tell us about your education? I studied in a Kuwait government school until university. My major was Law and I loved it, but was unable to continue though I had only two more years to go. Certain situations in my life forced me to leave and later, I was married in a year.
When did you first realize your potential as an artist? Throughout my life, I was always interested in learning and wondered about everything around me. I love sewing, so in my spare time, especially at night, I get out my kit and start sewing. I learned it from my grandmother, I spent a lot of time with her so I was either cooking or sewing. On the other hand, I loved to pretend I was a teacher when I played alone in the 16 www.citypageskuwait.com
backyard of our house. When everyone was taking a nap, I imaged I was the teacher in front of students, writing on the board, going through the books as if revising the last lesson we had. It was fun. Being in a teacher's role made me love stationary, I collect pencils and pens till today. By the age of 12, I realized I was more interested in drawing and painting. My first painting was when I was around this age and then, I painted another one when I was in my teens.
Which artists have influenced you? I love the works of Francis Bacon, Henri Matisse, Lucian Freud and Henry Moore.
What are your preferred materials to work with? Now I am into oils and inks. I started painting with oil paint and stopped, got into Acrylic ink, but I honestly love oil for its richness and weight. I love painting with a brush full of heavy oil paint. The way it strokes the canvas is a wonder.

Could you tell us some more about your paintings? Well, I started painting building and figures; I had a theory and a concept behind them. Today I am still into figures, but mostly they are in an Abaya out of respect for my grandmother, whom I lost in 2008, and the motifs I draw became a part of me and by coincidence they came out sometime around 2008. There has always been a concept behind my exhibitions; I have a message to deliver. I don't paint for the sake of painting; I paint to deliver my inner feelings and self to the world. I want everyone to know what I go through. I know I am not the only one who is going through it. In a way, my type of work will make the viewer feel all those emotions that have been inside me such as sadness, the pain of losing a dear one or being hurt by the closest person around you. Common emotions we go through, so it’s not only me who wonders about these feelings, I want the world to see it and feel it.
How have you handled the business side of being an artist? I can be a good marketer for others but never for myself. I have realized that I never dream to be or wish to be a marketer. I do sometimes want something but I never dream or plan for it, but by the time I realize that God has opened the door for me, I have reached somewhere in my life I had never thought of reaching. It also falls on my paintings. I never think I want to do this because I want to sell. I make sure I have the right idea and the right gallery to exhibit and the rest is in God’s hand.
Describe your studio? My studio is the place where I disappear to even if I am surrounded by many people. It’s my humble place where I can wash dishes and paint at the same time.
18 www.citypageskuwait.com
What inspires you to paint and how do you motivate yourself to stay strong when things are tough?
How long does it take to complete a painting at an average? Which painting took the most of your time to complete?
It’s very hard to answer this question especially now, because I am suffering from it for the time being. I can't describe it now but maybe when I’m inspired and you ask, I could tell you what it is. I kind of feel like I’m in a desert and it is so dry and I’m restless.
It all depends on the idea and the medium that you are using, I have paintings that were done in a day, and others in months. The longest one took almost five years to complete, it was 365x240 cm called ‘The Journey’, in which I painted everything about my journey in life and being in my studio for the past 6 years.
What are the best and worst things about being a full- time artist? The best thing is being full and the worst time is when you are empty. You have nothing to offer yourself. You lack the inspiration to create.
Which of your own paintings do you love the most and why? I love all of my work; but some have a significant touch that reminds me of a certain occasion and time. They express a part of me that was taken away. There was one of my paintings that was sold in Bahrain, it was called Iran 1. It was about me and my grandmother taking an early morning walk in an area where our house used to be. I can still remember the smell and weather of that day and how protectively she held my hand. We all tend to miss this after a while when we grow older. It is a special memory that just seems like yesterday.
Could you talk about your latest series of paintings and what you are trying to achieve with them? For the time being, I am working on two pieces I was commissioned to do, they are both in different directions and sizably big. I go to the studio daily and try to work on them; unfortunately - like I said-I am kind of in a dry spell these days.
Where have you travelled for your work? I have been to Beirut, Paris, Istanbul, Qatar, Dubai and Bahrain.
What do you do for fun? I like to go for walks, walking stimulates my mind especially when the weather is cloudy. I love clouds and sitting in a park and wondering, or walking on the beach in the winter time in Kuwait. I like to go to the gym in my spare time, do some exercises to let the blood run to my brain. Aside from this I enjoy music, reading and watching movies. Movies sometimes have a great impact on me.
What advice would you give to an artist just starting out? Freedom is your key to your expression. Let go and be free.
Your message for us at CityPages Magazine I honestly thank you for giving me this opportunity and I wish you all the success and good luck.

Chanel’s fairytale haute couture make up Chanel's 'New Vintage' fairytale for haute couture fall 2012 gave models icy silver shadow on the eyes contrasted by soft pink cheeks and lips. Conventional? No. A look you can create for yourself? Of course When girly meets glamourous, you get Chanel’s vision for haute couture and gold-class luxury. The fairytale nostalgia at Chanel haute couture fall 2012 saw an unconventional marriage of smoky eyes and pink cheeks. Unusual? Yes. But do you expect any less from Karl Lagerfeld? Creative Director of Chanel Make-up, Peter Philips, formulated the idea of creating something ‘new’ from the old, only adding to Lagerfeld’s theme of ‘New Vintage’ for this year’s haute couture show. The look is as girly as it can be – soft blushed cheeks, shimmering eyes and dewy skin. But the roughness of silver and black on the eyelids contrasts the candy pink cheeks, making it edgy, modern and… new. And perfect for your fall 2012 makeup repertoire.
Skin For the show, Philips prepped each model’s skin with a hydrating serum, just to make the make-up last longer and have it sustain a natural glow. Skip a heavy-duty foundation for this look, and apply a hydrating tinted moisturiser instead. If you have any visible redness, dab a light-weight concealer cream only on the region. Philips used Chanel’s Correctuer Perfection on each model for the show.
Cheek Philips placed the blush “a bit higher than usual” for this particular look, to create an illusion of higher cheekbones. The soon-to-launch Chanel blush, Joues Contraste ‘Rose Initial’ was applied in an inverted slant across the apples of the cheeks, going all the way to the jawline. Skip the bronzer and let the blush contour the cheeks with its pink hue.
Eyes These are the assets of the look, as all the drama and action is happening right around the eyes. The soft metallic smoky eyes, seen on Chanel models, have a tint of silvery-blue, but feel free to use other metallic shades when imitating this look for yourself. Make sure the eyeshadow isn’t too shimmery or glittery. Philips used Chanel’s Ombre Essentielle single palette in Furtive shade. Tip: Stick to one shade of metallic: either silver, bronze or gold, and apply the colour as an outline of the shape of your eye. Essentially, you want your eyes to have an outer, metallic lining. Don’t miss the tear ducts and the outer rim of the eye. Apply a thick layer of eyeliner on the top lid, as well as the waterline, as this will contrast the metallic eyeshadow. Create a mini flick using on the outer edge the eye for definition. Le stylo Yeux Waterproof eyeliner was used backstage for the runway show. Tip: If you have a steady hand, use liquid or cream-based eyeliner for the top lid and a kohl pencil for the waterline. Create the final silhouette for the eyes by adding a few dashes of mascara on the top lashes only. The eyeliner is super heavy in this look, so you might be able to get away by only curling the lashes and skipping the mascara.
Lips Finish this look with a neutral tint on the lips; think peachy pink colours when picking a shade to contrast the intense smoky eyes. Philips applied Rouge Allure lipstick in Evanescente on each model at the show. 22 www.citypageskuwait.com

I just had the chance to interview Dr. Abdulrazzaq A. Al-Obaid a Consultant Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon. Dr. Abdulrazzaq is an internationally recognized board certified spine surgeon who has over 15 years of experience in the field of medicine and 10 years out of that in spine surgeries. He is well known as one of Kuwait’s Top Spine Surgeon and has an excellent success rate to his credit. Despite his busy schedule, he is regularly invited internationally to speak at seminars and conferences. Dr. Abdulrazzaq has several first’s to his name, including the first to introduce artificial disc technology to the middle-east and he is the only Spine Surgeon in Kuwait to use computer-guided navigation for spine surgery. I was lucky to get some time out of his busy schedule to know more about him and the latest advancements in Spine Surgery
Mohammad Altaf Please tell us about your education? Graduated from Kuwait University - Faculty of medicine. Then continued post-Graduate education at McGill University - Montreal - Canada and joined their residency program in Orthopedics which is a five years program after which I got my postgraduate degree in Orthopedics and after passing the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, final exam I received my degree. I then continued my subspecialty training and fellowship for two years in Spine surgery including spinal trauma, deformities (Pediatric), degenerative, and tumors. This was followed by one year fellowship in Neurosurgery - spine, at the Montreal Neurologic Institute.
When and Why did you decide to join the medical field? I knew earlier in my life that my dream would be to become a doctor and to help sick people get better. For example during childhood, I used to play the role of a doctor. So it was my dream since childhood and I worked hard in school that I could join the medical school. My parents provided me with the optimal environment and helped me throughout my school years to make sure I would have all the support and environment to achieve this dream.
Why did you choose Orthopedic Spine Surgery as your specialization? Actually Orthopedics was not in my mind at all. I always thought of Orthopedics as those doctors who apply casts and put injured patients in traction beds. I knew from the early years of medical school that I liked to work with my hands. I liked surgery as a specialty. After graduation from medical school I wanted to explore the surgical specialties. One of my senior surgeons advised me to explore Orthopedics. He told that this field is growing up fast with new techniques and procedures. What is special about it is the fact that you cannot hide your mistakes. You will know the result of surgery as soon as you finish your surgery. You can tell the difference between a skillful surgeon and non-professional. Everything can be seen by x-ray, you cannot hide it. Moreover, there is a big demand on orthopedic surgeons worldwide and specially in Kuwait. So I joined an Orthopedic rotation at Al-Razi hospital where I was 26 www.citypageskuwait.com
supervised by Dr. Ahmad AlRowieh who encouraged me to continue Post-graduate training in orthopedics. At that time there was huge demand for orthopedic surgeons. After finishing orthopedics I continued in spine surgery, which is a specialty shared by orthopedic and neurosurgeons. I underwent both orthopedic and neurosurgical training and fellowships. It took me not less than eight years of training after my medical degree from the medical school. The post-graduate training was all done in North America, away from my country (Kuwait). My wife had to live up being away from home and her family. She provided me with all the support I needed to go through this challenging period of my life. I did not have to worry about anything other than my studies and training. I then choose Spine surgery because it was very challenging and advancing surgery. It is one of the few subspecialties that is growing really fast and with new technology and procedures every day. More over its very challenging as you are dealing with nervous system. Any mistake can mean paralysis. The results of surgery have a direct impact on the patient's life. Moreover, the advancing technology in spine surgery is growing every day. It requires continuous update and training.
What are some of the most common problems patients come to you with? Depending on age group, the most common in children is spinal deformity (scoliosis). Every summer the operative list is fully booked with cases of scoliosis correction surgery with excellent results. At the adult age group, the most common is disc disease whether in the neck where we use total disc replacement or in the back, where many times microscopic surgical disecectomy is required. At elderly group the most common is spinal stenosis and osteoporotic fracture. For the later, we use the latest technology of utilizing Kyphoplasty through balloon and cement augmented stents.
What other non-surgical options available for patients with spinal injuries?

Physiotherapy, medication, and life style adjustment are among the main modalities of non surgical treatment. Sometimes we need injection to help speed up the recovery time, and to deliver the medication at the pathology site. This includes for example, epidural injections and foraminal nerve root blocks.
For how many years have you been performing spine surgeries? I have been practicing medicine for more than 15 years. Regarding spine surgery, for around ten years and we use the state of the art technology and up to date surgical techniques. I also participate as an International faculty, where I deliver lectures and train other spine surgeons from all across the world. I am also a Journal Reviewer and I review and score many international papers for publications or presentations.
What are factors that are considered before deciding that surgical intervention is the only option? Many factors are involved. First the diagnosis has to be confirmed. Identifying the pain generator is the major challenge. We always start with non-surgical approach. Many respond and do not require further surgical intervention. Some fail to do so and require surgical intervention either to decompress the neural elements or stabilize the spine or both. Patient education is very important. The patient has to try to change their life style and help with exercise. Obviously, surgery is no magic. If you continue o have the same lifestyle, and do not work hard on exercise and physiotherapy, then the results are no good. Patient's expectations are another important factor. You don't expect to become younger after surgery.
What is a common misconception people have about spine surgeries? The most common is that the patient think that spine surgery has bad results and many get paralyzed. This was true in the olden days, but not now. Although neurologic injuries should be considered , but these are not common.
What is your success rate for patients with spine injuries? The success rate is excellent and is comparable with the published international numbers. Depending on the condition being treated and the complexity of the case, the results are encouraging and the technique and technology utilized is also matching the International standards.
With how many assistants do you work with during an operation? Spine surgery is one of the bigger procedures requiring a highly specialized team including the surgeon and at least one assistant, an anesthesia doctor specialized in spine cases, at least one scrubbed and one circulating nurse, and an x-ray technician. Depending
I want to tell the people in Kuwait that when it comes to spine surgery everything is available here in Kuwait." on the type of case, other professionals would be involved. For example, if we are using the computer guided spine surgery ( Navigation) then there will be a technical team dealing with the navigation machine. Another example is when we do complex deformity correction where neural monitoring would be required, then a specialist would be present for continuous nerve stimulation and monitoring during the case to ensure better results and to avoid nerve injury.
Can you tell us some of your most unforgettable moments of your professional life? The life of a surgeon is very stressful and demanding. In spine surgery, you need to be alert all the time and be prepared to deal with any complications. It requires specific training. Every stage that you pass through during this is of special significant. The first day you are in the operating room, the first day you hold a knife, the first day you put a screw, the first day you do a case on your own, and so on. Just to give you an example on how difficult it is to be a surgeon, I can tell about the day when my wife was giving birth to our first child, this is an important event for any couple. Especially if it was the first child. At that day I had clinical duties, so I would come to my wife for 5-10 minutes hold her hand and try to give her some support but unfortunately, I will have to leave and come back later every hour because I was unable to leave my clinical duties. I think you would imagine what type of social life a spine surgeon would have?. But this is alright because you are helping people, but what hurts is that some patients do not appreciate that.
What is approximate cost of undergoing a spine surgery? Spine surgery is one of the most expensive surgeries for many reasons. Firstly, it requires special qualifications and expertise. It is technically and physically demanding. Moreover most of the time we use implants which are very expensive.
What is the duration of a typical surgery and which the longest surgery that you
have performed? Depending on the procedure it can go from one hour for microscopic discectomies to even 10 hours when you have a complex deformity. We even have sometime to stage the procedure into two stages at different setting.
What are your other hobbies? I used to like biking and water skiing. Now it is almost impossible with my clinical duties.
Tells us about some of your achievements and awards that you have received? I am currently Chairing the Middle East region at the biggest International Spine Surgery Societies (AOSpine). I am considered one of few faculties from the Middle East to deliver lectures at International conferences and to train other spine surgeons at International courses. I have my own surgical techniques published at peer-reviewed medical journals. I was the first to bring the artificial disc technology in the Middle East. I was the first to perform Kyphoplasty stent for osteoporotic fractures in the Middle East. I am the only spine surgeon in Kuwait who utilizes computer guided navigation for spine surgery. You can simply enter my name in the internet and perform a search and you will find my name is all over the place when it comes to spine surgery.
What are your goals/dreams for the future? I am already happy that we brought the level of orthopedic and spine surgery in Kuwait to a different level. My dream is to see the medical system the same as it is in the modern world. And maybe one day I can have my own center that will have the treatment of any musculoskeletal disease.
Do you have plans for further enhancing your qualifications? I think at my stage of training, there is no more qualifications you can get. All what is needed now is to keep updated by attending conferences regularly and to train on new techniques.
What advice would you offer someone considering this career? You need to work hard, lots of reading, traveling and get trained at the best centers. Dedication is the key
Your message for our magazine? Thank you for taking the time to do this interview and I want to tell the people in Kuwait that when it comes to spine surgery everything is available here in Kuwait.

That is right, hormones determine: • The food you like to eat • If your body can get fat Brain neurochemistry and hormones are controllable, if and only if, you tune into the science-based evidence, learn to use the weight control tools that come from science-based evidence, and learn how to push the right hormone buttons with these sciencebased tools. Let’s construct a plan for dealing with the problem: The plan created by you must be built upon science and personal responsibility because if not, it will not work. The plan, once designed, must be implemented by you, because if you will not do it, no one will! No plan, however scientific, will work if it is not used. I know this to be a successful formula. Over the years I have witnessed thousands of patients achieve permanent control over their weight and their lives with these very principles.
Science Based Fact Heredity hormone balance determines if you can gain weight. However, your personal choices determine if you will gain weight! We know that: 1. Hormones 30 www.citypageskuwait.com
Science Based Fact Permanent weight control is a matter of pushing the right hormone buttons. If this is true, and science-based evidence tells us that it is, and if one could learn to manipulate these hormones to ones benefit, and science based evidence tells us that one can, then permanent weight control becomes simply a matter of choosing to use the correct tools to push the correct hormone buttons. This series of articles is about just that; sculpting your body and creating vibrant health by learning when and how to push the right hormone buttons. Tanya was a frustrated 26-year-old patient. “Doctor Green, my friends and I eat the very same food, do the same form of exercise, and all about the same height, but they weigh less than a hundred fifty five kilos and I haven’t weighed less than a fifty five kilos since I was twelve years old. I’ve always had a weight problem and they never had one. Why?”

Tom’s parents and siblings were also obese, and his father had died of a heart attack at the age of 50. His mother had adult onset diabetes, known heart disease, a history of arthritis and depression. Tom, like so many others, rarely ate breakfast and he often skipped lunch as well. He liked the idea of saving the calories and he really just never felt hungry in the mornings. Problem foods for Tom were anything sweet, especially donuts, as well as bread, pasta, bagels, rice and fatty foods. He admitted often binge eating when depressed, but denied either vomiting, or using laxatives for weight control. Tom admitted constant weight control dieting since his early teens with little success and disclosed that he often felt hopeless, helpless, and worthless. Sometimes he had thoughts of suicide. He lived alone with his dog because, “I’m too fat and ugly to have a wife.” His hobbies were playing music for his friends, singing and volunteering at a local homeless shelter. Tom’s doctors often advised him to lose weight. However, none offered personal assistance, specific advice or referral to a weight specialist.
This is a wonderful example confirming what sciencebased evidence clearly demonstrates, that heredity is a powerful determinant of overweight and obesity.
None addressed the likelihood that some of his prescription medications (antidepressants and diabetes Rx.) were contributing to his weight gain.
In Tanya’s case the environment was the same for her and her friends, the personal food choices were the same too, but heredity overpowers both causing obesity for Tanya and thinness for her friends. It is not fairbut life is seldom fair.
None addressed the specific connection between abdominal obesity and his high blood pressure, high cholesterol, his adult onset diabetes or his risk of heart disease.
The bad news for Tanya was that heredity is very potent. The good news for her was that when she
One physician did test him for thyroid function, which was negative. “I’ve been on every diet known to man and I’ve

measurement.
I hate my job, my life and myself. Doctor, I would think you were a miracle worker if you could just help me quit gaining. Do you think you can do that?”
Science Based Fact
I have known hundreds of Toms over the years, yet on hearing his story and seeing his pain, I was touched almost to tears. Tom was obviously an intelligent, caring, sensitive, humorous and wonderfully worthwhile human being.
Body Mass Index:
Yet he felt hopeless, helpless, worthless and unlovable; he felt life just was not worth living. He thought of himself as a fat man instead of a man who happened to be fat. Tom was so sure that he was unlovable that he kept his interpersonal relationships superficial and distant. Though he had developed a talent for humor, he never allowed anyone a chance to get close to the real Tom. I knew immediately that I had my work cut out when he confided in me, after his physical examination, that I was the first physician who ever had done a hands-on physical examination. That’s right; he thought that he was so physically repulsive that his doctors did not even wish to touch him! Question number one. How do we determine if a person is overweight or obese? Historically the concept of excess body fat or obesity centered upon what was considered as ideal or normal. But, ideal or normal weight is culturally determined and changes over time as public opinion evolves. Today, in Latin American countries heavier women are considered more beautiful than thin women.
• Waist circumference is another • Body fat measured by impedance is another. Science Based Evidence correlates Body Mass Index or (BMI) with disease risk and indicates that a person is: Underweight <18.5 Normal
18.5 – 24.9
Overweight
25.0 – 29.9
Obese Class I
30.0 – 34.9
Class II
35.0 – 39.9
Class III (Morbid)
40.0 & over
Science Based Fact According to many independent scientific studies a BMI of 25 (and over) increases the risk ofDiabetes, Insulin resistance, Stroke, High blood pressure, LDL Cholesterol (bad kind), Heart disease, Infertility, Gall bladder disease, Joint disease, Sleep apnea, Depression, and Early death.
worthless again. “Life”, he said, “just isn’t worth living. I knew I would fail the diet, I always do.”
Together, Tom and I began our work. Once Tom began to realize that he was not a fat man, but a man who happened to be fat:
People do not fail weight control diets. Weight control diets fail people!
• That he was not a bad person because of his weight.
The weight control diet failed you. Not only that, but I failed you.
• That his primary problem was genetic and environmental, not psychological!
I failed to convince you that your genetic condition would never go away. I failed to help you understand that your new weight control diet is your new way of life and must be solved one day at a time, not for just the short term, but for the rest of your life.
• That if he understood his problem from a science-based perspective he would be empowered to formulate a plan that would program him for success. • That if he chose to implement his plan day by day for the rest of his life he would be successful. • Then, and only then, could Tom cease being fat-Tom and become, just plain Tom. Within 9 months Tom had lost 34 kg and was down to 115 kg, • His Blood pressure
Body mass index is calculated using the following formula:
• Blood sugar
BMI= Weight in pounds x (times) 703 / (Divided by) Height (in inches) 2 or Weight in Kg/Height in Meters2 Example: Tom weighed 149 kg and his height was 1.75 m BMI = 149 kg divided by 1.75 meters squared (1.57 x 1.75) = BMI 48.3 Tom’s BMI = 48.3 According to the above table, Tom fell into the Obesity Class III (BMI 40 and over) and therefore, Tom was not only obese, he was morbidly obese.
Science Based Fact
The Science-Based definition of the condition of being overweight or obese is entirely centered upon assessment of health risk; the higher the weight, the higher the health risks.
Waist circumference over 89 cm for women, and over 101 cm for men indicate obesity and a consequential increase in risk of serious disease and early death!
Question number two. Is Tom overweight or obese?
Science Based Fact
• Body Mass Index or BMI is one such
Tom’s waist was 147 cm and since this is well over 101 cm,therefore by waist measurement he was obese, and his excess girth predicted an increased risk of developing disease.
Science Based Fact
We need a definition of excess body fat that is scientific, dependent solely on health risk and is not subject to cultural bias, and not dependent on the twin meaningless concepts of ideal or normal weight.
A person is Obese if that person has an excess of body fat as defined by Science-Based Evidence:
Gall bladder disease, Joint disease, Sleep apnea, Depression, and Early death.
Waist circumference also correlates scientifically to increased risk of disease and is therefore an alternative method of determining obesity.
Science Based Fact
“Tom,” I answered, “you didn’t fail the weight control diet.
Next month you will learn how Tom and I working together solved his problem for the rest of his life. If you would like us to calculate your BMI email: drbonnie@obesityconsultants.us

Six months later Tom returned. His weight was now back up to 158 kg, his blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar were all up and his mood was down! Tom felt hopeless, helpless, and

Diarrhea and its Home Remedies Dear Readers. The holy month of Ramadan is ending and we all will soon be celebrating Eid festival. During the month of Ramadan I received several calls from friends and readers about complains of Diarrhea. So, I decided to write this month on Diarrhea and the common home remedies to cure it.
Diarrhea is a condition of frequent, watery bowel movements that may be accompanied by painful cramps or nausea and vomiting. Diarrhea is uncomfortable and unpleasant, but generally no big deal in otherwise healthy adults. However, if diarrhea becomes a chronic condition, the situation changes. Or if it affects the very young, the elderly, or the chronically ill, it can be dangerous. And if you're not careful to drink enough fluids, you could find yourself complicating what should have been a simple enough situation. There are essentially two types of diarrhea: acute and chronic. Thankfully, the vast majority of diarrhea is acute, or short term. This type of diarrhea keeps you on the toilet for a couple of days but doesn't stick around long. Acute diarrhea is also known as non-inflammatory diarrhea. Its symptoms are what most people associate with the condition: watery, frequent stools accompanied by stomach cramps, gas and nausea. Acute diarrhea usually has a bacterial or viral culprit. Gastroenteritis, mistakenly called the "stomach flu," is one of the most common infections that cause diarrhea. Gastroenteritis can be caused by many different viruses. Eating or drinking foods contaminated with bacteria can also cause diarrhea. Other causes of acute diarrhea are lactose intolerance, sweeteners, over-the-counter antacids that contain magnesium, too much vitamin C, and some antibiotics.
Stay Hydrated You can lose a lot of liquid in diarrhea, but you also lose electrolytes, minerals such as sodium and potassium that are critical in the running of your body. Here's how to replace what you're losing: • Drink plenty of fluids. Consume two quarts (eight cups) of fluids a day, three quarts (12 cups) if you're running a fever. Plain water lacks electrolytes, but it's a good, gentle-on-the-tummy option that can help you replace some of the fluid that you've lost. Other choices include weak tea with a little sugar, sports drinks such as Gatorade, flat soda pop (decaffeinated flavors such as ginger ale are best), and fruit juices other than apple and prune, which have a laxative effect. • Buy an over-the-counter electrolyte replacement formula. Whatever you choose to drink, keep it cool; it will be less irritating that way. Sip, don't guzzle; it will be easier on your insides if you take frequent sips of liquid in32 www.citypageskuwait.com
stead of guzzling down a glass at a time.
Eat Yogurt Look for yogurt with live cultures. These "cultures" are friendly bacteria that can go in and line your intestines, providing you with protection from the bad guys. If you've already got diarrhea, yogurt can help produce lactic acid in your intestines, which can kill off the nasty bacteria and get you feeling better, faster. Live-culture yogurt is also the best way to treat diarrhea caused by oral antibiotics. The antibiotics kill beneficial bacteria in the intestines, but live-culture products replenish those bacteria. Better still, use these from the time you begin the medication, and you may avoid the diarrhea altogether.
Get Rest If you're not very young or old or suffering from any chronic illness, it may be safe just to put up with it for a couple of days. After all, it's often your body's natural way of getting rid of something that shouldn't be there to begin with. Try resting in bed and sipping any broth, but have it lukewarm instead of hot, and add a little salt to it if it's not already salty. A heating pad on your belly may also help relieve abdominal cramps
Avoid Certain Foods Avoid milk, cheese, and other dairy products (except yogurt, unless you don't usually tolerate it well) while you have diarrhea as well as for one to three weeks after it stops. The small intestine, where milk is digested, is affected by diarrhea and simply won't work as well for a while. Just as it stimulates your nervous system, caffeine jump-starts your intestines. And that's the last thing you need when you have diarrhea. High concentrations of sugar can also increase diarrhea. The sugar in fruit can do the same. Lastly, steer clear of greasy or high-fiber foods. These are harder for your gut to handle right now. It needs foods that are kinder and gentler such as soup, gelatin, rice, noodles, bananas, potatoes, toast, cooked carrots, and skinless white-meat chicken
Drink Chamomile Tea Chamomile is good for treating intestinal inflammation, and it has antispasmodic properties as well. You can brew yourself a cup of chamomile tea from packaged
tea bags, or you can buy chamomile flowers and steep 1 teaspoon of them and 1 teaspoon of peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for fifteen minutes. Drink 3 cups a day. Also the tannins in ordinary black tea have an anti-diarrheal effect.
Eat Starchy Foods Starchy foods, such as precooked rice, can help ease your tummy. Just avoid adding too much sugar or salt, as these can aggravate diarrhea. It's probably a good idea to avoid oatmeal, since it's high in fiber, and your intestines can't tolerate the added bulk during a bout with diarrhea. Potatoes are another starchy food that can help restore nutrients and comfort your stomach. But eating French fries won't help. Fried foods tend to aggravate an aching tummy. Other root vegetables, such as carrots (cooked, of course) are also easy on an upset stomach, and they are loaded with nutrients. Cooked white rice is another starchy food that can be handled by someone recovering from diarrhea.
Make Orange Peel Tea Orange peel tea is a folk remedy that is believed to aid indigestion. Place a chopped orange peel into a pot and cover with 1 pint boiling water. Let it stand until the water is cooled. You can sweeten it with sugar or honey.

Fitness in Ktown.
I’m a couch-Olympian at present. I had my eyes glued to Danny Boyle’s spectacular opening ceremony of the Olympics, thought Anish Kapoor’s ArcellorMittal Orbit sculpture which graces the Olympic Park in Stratford was quite an eyesore and was super proud to see 2 female Kuwaitis, Maryam Arzouqi and Faye Sultan, be an integral part of Team Kuwait.
Flexing my biceps whilst channel surfing the events has pretty much been the most fitness activity I’ve done for the last 2 weeks what with me having to heed to my doctor’s orders and rest my knee, following my ACL surgery. In my leisurely confinement to the sofa, I must say I am quite impressed with Kuwait’s contingent of 10 athletes at the Games. Fitness has come a long way in Kuwait over the last 2.5 years. Kuwaitis are more conscientious about their physical health as well as their mental wellbeing and this is evident in the amount of boutique gyms springing up in every possible nook and cranny. Why, in Shuwaikh Industrial alone, there are at least 4 fitness institutions right around the corner from each other, the latest being Circuit+, Kuwait’s first CrossFit based gym facility (super jealous as it’s only for men! #justsaying). Hey, if there was no demand, surely these hip and fit clubs would not exist in the first place.
But I have to wonder:
tion and real-life changes.”
Is fitness, just another temporary craze just like the cupcake/muffin/cookie/baking revolution that besieged our shores a year ago?
If you’re currently thinking about changing your lifestyle for the better, it’s all about doing it one step at a time. If you’re eating junk food and take-out every day of the week, try cutting it down to three times, twice until eventually you’re comfortable to having one cheat meal a week. Hey it won’t be an overnight change, but at least this gradual process of eating to benefit your life will eventually save it in the long run.
I’d like to take a positive notion that perhaps Kuwait’s finally waking up from its fast-food, burger-binging, pizza-inducing stupor and finally wanting to do something about changing current fitness depictions of this country being plagued with problems of obesity and cardiovascular disease. For those of you not in the know, here are the grim statistics: -One out of 3 Kuwaiti adults is obese. -10% of the population is morbidly obese in a country where 88% is considered overweight. -In a June 2012 publication by the London School of Hygiene And Tropical Medicine, using data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Kuwait is the second most obese nation in the world behind the United States. It is also interesting to note that also on the rise, are the amount of bariatric procedures (gastric bypass, lap-band, gastric sleeve, biliopancreatic diversion) being performed. Why, according to Bloomberg Businessweek, there were at least 5,000 of such procedures done in 2011, compared to 3,000 cases performed in Canada, which by the way is 30 times the population of Ktown. So where does this leave us? Does one become part of this grim statistic, go under the knife, or should they partake in this fanatical fitness trend?
If your running shoes are laden with a thick layer of dust from not being in use, as a personal trainer, I wouldn’t recommend that you get out there and sprint your lungs out. Instead, grab a buddy and go for a walk along the Corniche ( I love the pedestrian strip along the Scientific Center). Better yet, invest in a couple of personal training sessions and get a trainer to start you on the right foot so to speak. If you like group sports, why not check out the plethora of gyms that are now available here and check out a class or two? Too many people in this day and age, are always impatient and are wanting to opt for the easiest ways to lose weight. If exercising weren’t the least bit challenging, it would be called a walk-though and not a workout. Nonetheless, only time will tell whether this health trend amongst our population will be permanent or just another fandango Kuwait can chalk up for 2012. With that said, it would be interesting to see, in the next Olympic Games, which is the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, just how big the Kuwait contingent will be this time around.
As Michelle Obama would say, “It’s all about modera-

It is natural for all countries to self-evaluate itself and use other countries as points of comparison. Therefore, when we compare the state of animal welfare development in Kuwait to that in global leaders in the field (United Kingdom, Australia, and the United Sates in particular), we see that Kuwait is between 50 and 100 years behind depending upon which aspect you examine. This may seem disheartening or even alarming, but what it means to those of us who are laying the groundwork for animal welfare development, we like to look at it as a relief that we don’t have to reinvent the wheel so to say. Figuratively speaking, we have only to choose the correct wheels and fit them into a machine of our own making. Many of the forbearers of animal welfare around the world have made mistakes, and they are here for us to learn from. At K’S PATH, we take pride in our willingness to experiment with policies developed by better-established organizations around the world. This has proven extremely effective in improving our adoption numbers. K’S PATH’s Companion Animal Shelter has seen a very steady increase in adoptions over the last couple years. Not only are our adoptions up, but our return rate is very low, hovering around 5%. We owe this to the “Best Practices” we have learned from the global shelter community that help to ensure we are putting great pets up for adoption and drastically enhances their success as family pets. So you might be wondering what Best Practices are we going on about? Well, at K’S PATH, we use scientifically and volume proven systems that all incoming dogs and cats go through that allow the shelter staff to put safe and healthy animals up for adoption and follow-on systems that work to ensure they remain adoptable as they wait for their forever home. First, every animal that is rescued or surrendered sees our medical staff that brings him or herup to date on vaccinations, deworms them and gives them a thorough physical. Any diseases or injuries are evaluated and sick or injured animals are put into a holding area where they will continue to receive any necessary medical treatment along with attention and playtime as they settle in. After a week, the veterinarian will let the shelter staff know if the pet is cleared medically and if so then they are ready for our behavior staff to take a look at them. Healthy animals too are held in separate kennels or catteries from sick, injured, and animals up for adoption. These animals are also allowed to settle in to shelter life before seeing our behavior staff. Our behavior staff then performs a behavioral evaluation which is a 20-30 minute test designed by international leaders in the animal behavior arena and tested to ensure the results are accurate and predictable of what will happen in the home. These
36 www.citypageskuwait.com
tests help the shelter staff ensure that dangerous animals are not placed in people’s homes where they might injure a family member. The test also helps staff predict the best home for each animal, for instance whether it would be best in a home with older children or a house with a garden. Once the dog/cat has passed their behavioral assessment, they are officially put up for adoption. Now begins the hard part, both for the pet and our staff. While waiting for their forever home, a team of staff and volunteers socialize the dogs and cats; dogs get outdoor exercise daily in good weather. This is a very important part of keeping animals happy in a shelter setting. Putting a dog or cat in a cage, feeding it and letting it out to go to the bathroom is not sufficient for any companion animal. They need play time with other dogs/cats if they desire it, they need playtime with humans (without exception), and they need activities in their rooms along with a calm and quiet environment. That is exactly that K’S PATH provides. Our shelter is designed to keep dogs and cats healthy and happy. Cats are housed in communal rooms with no cages. The rooms have lots of climbing areas to perch on, beds galore and areas to scratch to their hearts content. Dogs live in 2.5 by 4 meter rooms often with one or two other dogs for company. Their doors are solid so they are not stimulated and stressed by what is going on around them and each dogs has an elevated Kuranda bed to keep them warm and clean. Each room has toys and rawhides to keep them entertained and each wing of 5 to 7 rooms has their own play yard for time to stretch their legs and play chase. This translates into dogs and cats that can live happily most of the time in a shelter environment while waiting for their forever home. No excessive barking and stress at K’S PATH. These simple but critical principles were adopted from decades of trial and error in other shelters around the world. Now comes the adoption. Many people come into the K’S PATH shelter and are confused as to why they are not allowed to walk around and pick out any dog they want, like in a store or a back-yard breeder. There is a very good reason for this. When people choose an animal based on a walk through or a photo, their choice is primarily decided by appearance. Our goal as a shelter is to make happy homes. We therefore place animals through a matching system. Each potential adopter is interviewed to ensure they are in fact ready for a pet and to determine which type of pet would be best suited to them. We then show them pets that are the closest combination of what the adopter is interested in and those we know to be the best suited to their situation based on our behavioral assessment. We may show them (or you!) one dog that fits the criteria or we may show you dozens. We never know until we complete the interview. The most important thing is that adopters end up happy with their pets and pets end up happy with their adopters in homes that will last a lifetime. It is this system of matching that has helped us maintain an incredibly low rate of failed adoptions. Animals that are safe, healthy, happy, and full of life make wonderful pets. These systems have also increased our adoption rate drastically. We have gone from placing 5-10 animals per month to 5-10 per week. It would be easy to assume that most of our adopters are Western Expats when in fact Easterners and Kuwaitis make up the majority of our adopters. Animals don’t care about nationality, and neither do we!We believe that no matter how big your community is, shelters have an obligation to put happy and safe pets into homes. Doing so changes peoples’ attitudes towards shelter animals. We strengthen our reputation further by providing support and guidance to adopters so that if problems present, we can work together to find solutions that keep pets in their homes and keep adopters happy. We have had many, many adopters come in for the second and even their third pet from K’S PATH along with their family and friends. A shelter not only has a responsibility to the animals in its care but also the community it places those animals into. We, at K’S PATH, take both these responsibilities seriously and we can assure you that we will help you add the most wonderful and best-suited animal to your family that has been checked both medically and behaviorally to ensure it will be a very happy member of your family. K’S PATH is not just a shelter, we are THE place to get a pet. With such a high level of care and service and with every size, shape, color, and personality of animal you could possibly want, why would you go anywhere else?

What is your country of origin and where do you presently reside? I was born in Somali and I now live in Toronto, Canada
Tell us about your education? I majored in International Development Studies at the University of Toronto.
recognized my dedication, they are my biggest supporters.
What was your experience with your first song? I was 15 years old living in Calgary and it’s probably one of the most depressing songs I have ever written. I laugh thinking about the words I used to describe what I was going through, but it was a real moment for me. I was the new girl from a different city in my high school and it was that year I started the transition from "Fantasy fun land" to "Real World". I started to see how ugly and hurtful people can be.
How did you develop an interest in singing? Somalis are poetic by nature, so naturally it was my solitary pastime. I began to find refuge in it, writing songs became my therapeutic expression. Thing is, the more I tapped into my skill, the more it felt further than a hobby and closer to a calling. I unconsciously and sporadically went into discovery modes and started self perfecting my sound.
Tell us about your family? I come from 2 loving parents who escaped the war back home to give us a better life. Their courage and strength is a reminder of why I’m here and for that I am thankful!
Did you get any support from your family? Who has always been there to support your dream? Growing up in a Somali, Muslim household can be a challenge for a young female artist thinking of breaking into the mainstream music industry. I hail from a culture where music is not looked at as a career choice for women. My parents couldn’t believe it when in 2009; I decided to take time off from University to pursue singing. My siblings were indifferent and figured it was a “phase”. Now that they have
When are you expecting to launch your first album? I have no dates at this exact moment but I will keep releasing new material leading up to that day.
What sort of difficulties do you face in proving your talent? I was my own worst enemy in the beginning; I was constantly battling my own demons. But I’m a new person now and will never allow myself to sink to that low point. Besides that I would say being a Muslim girl I have received a lot of mixed reviews from people. They have said some pretty hurtful things to me but I know my heart and that’s all that matters. People need to understand that music is a universal art that transcends global cultures and languages. It is a medium that brings together humanity regardless of their race, color, national or ethnic origin.
What different genres of music do you play and what is your favorite genre? I absolutely love R&B music and it’s what I lean towards most of the time. But I think there is nothing I can’t do. I can handle all types of genres of music and I think that is what it takes to be an artist. 39 August 2012
"I hail from a culture where music is not looked at as a career choice for women"
Who are your favorite singers and which singers inspire you? Alicia Keys, a musician and vocalist that I have incredible respect for, but it’s the emotional elements in her voice that have me in awe. Lauryn Hill also influences my sound with her moving voice. It’s like it almost tickles your core and I only hope I can achieve a tenth of her soulful power. An artist that has listeners from all types of demographics is K’naan, who has broken the generic mold of rappers and has become matchless, which I strive to become; unique. Drake’s confidence and capabilities of putting Toronto on the map has given me the confidence and realization that I can bring what’s important to me into the light.
What are your future goals or what would you like to achieve? While building my career is important, life for me is not simply about topping charts, winning awards, generating platinum sales or rising to global fame. I would like to make a difference in this world by using my voice on the global stage to bring hope to those in dire need of help.
Your advice for young aspiring singers? To succeed in this industry, you need to surround yourself with positive people and friends who can lend you encouraging words. If you don’t have that, keep focused. There will be obstacles along the way and so 40 www.citypageskuwait.com
never give up. And remember, nothing without hard work is granted. For young people seeking important dreams in life, I would like to share how hard it has been for me. Being a young, Somali, Muslim girl trying to break into this industry, I encountered a lot of obstacles. I did not get any level of support from my family, friends or community. I was completely independent and worked my way into the industry entirely on my own to eventually attain the success I enjoy today. At all times, you need to be resilient. If you have an unwavering passion for something, you’ll always succeed. It is real passion that drives you to intended success.
What would you like to do for your country? As an upcoming artist, I would like to raise global awareness on the political crisis and social disintegration afflicting my beleaguered home country. As a Canadian citizen, I can effectively use my voice to bring change to this world.
Your message for your fans in Kuwait? I am shocked to find out my music has traveled to that corner of the world. I am so happy and grateful for my fans. I hope you all continue to travel with me on this journey in my life.
Your message for us at CityPages Magazine I am so flattered that you chose to cover me in your magazine and I am so thankful for the opportunity. Thank you for the kind words and I wish you guys even more success :)

Synopsis:
A physician heads down a dangerous road when he sets aside his ethics in this thriller from director Lance Daly. Martin Blake is a British medical student who has come to the United States to begin a residency at a hospital in Southern California. Blake is handsome and charming, but beneath the surface he's an arrogant man who longs to wield power over others. Blake doesn't fare well with his first few patients, and is on shaky ground with his superiors when he begins treating Diane, a beautiful teenage girl with a kidney infection. Diane is clearly taken with Blake's good looks and they enjoy one another's company, while his superiors are impressed with the care he's taken with her. But Blake doesn't want Diane released too quickly, and begins adjusting her medication to that her infection will take longer to clear up. Jimmy, an orderly, notices what Blake is doing, and threatens to expose him unless he wants -- a steady supply of pharmaceuticals.
Originally adapted by director Paul Verhoeven in 1990, author Philip K. Dick's classic sci-fi short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale returns to the big screen in this remake starring Colin Farrell, Bryan Cranston, and Kate Beckinsale, and directed by Underworld's Len Wiseman. Douglas Quaid (Farrell) is a factory worker in New Shanghai. He's got a stable job and a loving wife (Beckinsale), but upon learning that a company called Rekall could grant him the memory of the ultimate espionage adventure, Douglas decides that a virtual vacation is better than no vacation at all. But in the midst of having the memories implanted, something goes haywire, and the system breaks down. As the authorities close in, Douglas flees, joining forces with a fierce rebel soldier (Jessica Biel) on a mission to track down the head of the resistance (Bill Nighy), and take down the tyrannical Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), a power-crazed leader who seeks to control the entire free world.

Announcing the
F12 ber linetta
The on-line unveiling of the F12berlinetta ushers in a new generation of Ferrari 12-cylinders in the form of a car that delivers unprecedented performance from an exceptional new engine, combined with innovative design that redefines classic themes along with extreme aerodynamics. Revealed to the world for the first time on Ferrari.com in preparation for its official debut at the Geneva International Motor Show, the F12berlinetta, finished in an attractive new Rosso Berlinetta three-layer color, represents the very cutting-edge of mid-front-engined sports cars.
This is, in fact, the most powerful and high-performance Ferrari road car ever launched thanks to the incredibly efficient engine – in terms of mechanical, combustion and fluid-dynamics efficiency – which, together with advanced vehicle architecture, aerodynamics, components and electronic controls, guarantee unsurpassed driving involvement whatever the road or track.Ferrari’s traditional transaxle layout has been revolutionised to match the more extreme performance of the car. The wheelbase has been shortened and the engine, dashboard and seats have been lowered in the chassis, while the new layout of the rear suspension and gearbox enabled Ferrari’s engineers to make the rear volume of the car smaller. The overall result is a very compact car with a lower centre of gravity that is further back in the chassis, and a level of aerodynamic efficiency that sets new standards.

On smooth terrain, mountain bikers need firm tires, and on rough ground they need softer ones. With a set of Adaptrac wheels, riders can adjust their tire pressure without stopping. They use a handlebarmounted switch to either send CO2 from an onboard canister through tubing and into tires or release air.
The ARIS is the first speaker to connect directly with Windows PCs over Wi-Fi. As long as the 100-watt speaker is within wireless range, the user can play music to it with a one-click option in Windows Media Player.
The VAMP iPhone amplifier doubles listening time while improving the quality of compressed audio. Users connect the lithium-ion-powered case to an iPhone 4 or 4S’s 30-pin port. The system processes digital audio files to sound more like the original recordings.

The firmer a golfer’s stance is, the more likely his shots will fly straight, so designers at Adidas created the most stable golf shoe yet. Taking a cue from barefoot-style sneakers, they widened the forefoot and thinned the sole, which gives toes room to wiggle and grip the ground.
The new CordCruncher headphones prevent knots. To store them, users push the 3.5-foot cord into a rubber sheath, which keeps the cable tightly coiled.
Handymen no longer need to carry a separate flashlight along with their 12-volt power tools. Craftsman engineers added six LEDs to the bottom of their new battery pack, so users have a spotlight when they need one.

The FreeKey ring won’t pinch a user’s fingers when they're adding a new key. Instead of prying apart the rings, users pinch a hinged lever on the outer edge of the steel spiral, popping the ring open to slide keys on. The spiral snaps itself securely shut.

The Garmin Approach S3 watch is a virtual caddy for 27,000 courses. Users can check where they are in relation to the hole on overhead maps and plan their shots by setting targets on the touchscreen.
Speed Demon Gamers looking to upgrade their towers won’t find anything more powerful than the GeForce GTX 690. Nvidia engineers built the graphics card with 3,072 parallel-processing cores and housed the fan in magnesium alloy to more effectively dissipate the heat that the cores produce.
This eight-gigabyte thumb drive is the first to use voice encryption. The drive includes voice-recognition software that verifies a user’s password and distinct vocal frequency. 52 www.citypageskuwait.com
The 2.3-inch, three-watt NuForce Cube is the smallest, loudest portable speaker available. The speaker driver is controlled by a high-strength neodymium magnet, which prevents the entire housing from shaking at high volumes.
Grab-It-All Blow Light The Craftsman Figure-Eight is the most versatile wrench available. Each end of the one-foot tool has two swiveling heads of different sizes. Each head's teeth grip round, square or hexagonal bolts.
To-Go Topper The Ecotop makes any coffee mug portable and more leak-resistant. Users press the polypropylene lid onto any three-inch mug, and a pair of silicon gaskets seal the rim.
Sound Cushion The P3 conforms to the listener’s ears better than other headphones. Designers cushioned the earcups with memory foam, which molds to the ears and creates a seal that helps keep out ambient noise.
Grill Tracker The CyberQ grill monitor prevents barbecue pits from fizzling out. It’s equipped with a set of heat probes, which track temperature, and a fan, which automatically turns on to act as a bellows when heat drops.
The LuminAID lamp can light up an entire tent and compress to the size of a billfold. Campers inflate the one-quart polycarbonate bag and turn on an LED to create a 35-lumen glow.
Flavor Extractor The Stem turns any piece of citrus into a spray bottle. To extract juice, users pierce a fruit’s skin and pump the spray nozzle, which is attached to a tiny juicer that squeezes moisture out of the fruit.
Wireless Weigh-In
Latest Gadgets & Gizmos Road Ready The K-30 is the only consumer DSLR built to weather sandstorms, downpours and other extreme conditions. Pentax designers backed the 16-megapixel camera's seams and lens mount with dense, waterrepellent foam so that dust and moisture can’t get inside.
The Aria scale tracks the weight changes of up to eight people. Synced with the Fitbit website over Wi-Fi, the scale saves each user’s weigh-ins and calls up his progress when it senses a number close to his last reading.
Spray Off The Gallery dishwasher blasts stuck-on food better than others. Typical washers have perforated spray arms that distribute water in a wide circle. Frigidaire designers added a rotating head that hits dishes with four times more water.
Flex Fan Pressure Chamber The SuctionSeal vacuum works as well on hardwood and tile floors as it does on carpet. A polycarbonate plate on the front of the upright creates a sealed chamber between the vacuum head and the floor, which makes for morefocused suction.
Many laptops run so hot that they need extra fans to cool them down. The Cryo E40 notebook pad allows users to customize ventilation to match their laptop’s hotspots. Two 3.1-inch fans magnetically attach (and reattach) to the pad’s mesh lid.

Colored jeans: the key denim colors for fall
Blue jeans may be the most famous and traditional kind, but keeping denim interesting for the coming cold season means mixing it up with colour. Whether it's a statement red or an earthy, autumnal tone, coloured jeans are a worthwhile investment for your casual wardrobe.
Earth tones Contrasting to the neons and pastels of spring, coloured denim for fall / winter moves to autumnal hues. Look out for organic, earthy tones that take their cues from nature: moss green, sandy neutrals, clays and rust tones all reflect wider fall 2012 color trends in an on-trend way. If you were to single out one of the season’s musthave colours, you’d end up pointing a finger towards the red-purple part of the colour spectrum. Burgundy plays well with so many colours in your existing wardrobe: navy blue, chocolate brown, forest green and cobalt amoung them. Any wine-like colour will work, be it a deep maroon or a more purplish grape.
Burgundy jeans If you were to single out one of the season’s musthave colours, you’d end up pointing a finger towards the red-purple part of the colour spectrum. Burgundy plays well with so many colours in your existing wardrobe: navy blue, chocolate brown, forest green and cobalt amoung them. Any wine-like colour will work, be it a deep maroon or a more purplish grape.
Blue jeans are famous as workwear, as a staple of America’s Old West; they were a symbol of youth culture and rebellion in the 1950s and 60s and they’ve been sung about by the likes of Neil Diamond through to Lana Del Rey. But as much as we still love to get our blue jeans on, keeping denim alive means mixing it up. And in so far as fall 2012's fashion trends go, that means colour. But what colour jeans to invest in for the coming cold months? Read on to find out.
Dark denim jeans Clean, minimal denim styles in dark indigo dye have also made a return. While many think of dark denim as being the ‘smart’ or more formal option, fall 2012 took that notion and twisted it a little by producing relaxed, slouchy styles of jeans in dark hues; the sharpness of the fabric being contrasted by the softness of the fit.
Bright red jeans Brocade / floral jeans Jeans don’t have to be block coloured in 2012. Another key trend for the season is mixing up your denim with patterns and prints – none more popular than brocade-style prints (a casual take on neo-Baroque clothing) and florals.
60 www.citypageskuwait.com
Burgundy may be the understated winner amongst the red colour spectrum, but if you want to truly make a statement it’s brighter cousins are your friend. Following the trend towards red clothing that swept fall’s runways, jeans have also appeared in tones of cardinal red through to rich terracotta.
