Five short questions for

M.I.A.

H&M has chosen London-based singer M.I.A. as the front figure of the World Recycle Week, starring in a campaign film inspiring customers to recycle their old clothes. With her great style, interest for sustainability and passion for the environment, M.I.A. personifies the conscious consumer.

”H&M’s campaign World Recycle week is about embracing an important environmental issue. The need for change is something that you have to encourage”. 16

MAY, 2016

Why have you chosen to participate in H&M’s garment collecting film and how do you feel about it? When a global brand like H&M is embracing an environmental issue like the waste problem and calls for the need for change, then you have to encourage it. There are of course obstacles but you can’t change everything in a day. What does sustainability mean to you? What sustainable choices do you make in your own day-to-day life, when traveling, eating, shopping etc? Just be conscious! Can fashion really be sustainable? It needs to be! What are your tips for a sustainable style? Re-wear it! Do you have a favourite item you have worn for a long time? My mum’s animal print shirt she bought in 1987. And I’ve still got loads of clothes designed by my uncle Bala who worked in fashion here in London in the 80’s. He was my biggest fashion inspiration. And finally, do you recycle your clothes? I give a lot of my tour wardrobe and shoot wardrobe away. On the shoot for ‘Borders’ where we had to style 1000 extras, all the clothes were sourced second hand on location in India. Everything was then donated to a local organisation in Chennai, India that my friend and assistant director is involved in.

”Fashion can and must be sustainable, just re-wear and recycle it!”

THE ARROGANCE OF THE GODS

Mashael Ali Sadeq A Kuwaiti hybrid studying medicine abroad. The power of the human mind captivates me. I write what I have envisioned in my mind, felt within my heart and seen with my very own eyes. I believe this modern world has destroyed us. I aspire to stand side by side with you as we paint the path of re-ordering what has been disordered by sharing points that have helped me personally. I believe the most important step for us in this journey, is to first acknowledge all that has been silenced in the past. Together, we can conquer the destroyed.

20

MAY, 2016

I

found myself highly distressed, a common characteristic we all share, one night. I was baffled at the incompetence of us humans when it comes to addressing the humanitarian aspects outlining our mere existence on a community level. I found the degree of our incompetence quite astounding. We have all been, or still are, guilty of it. Let me talk you through that night. We all celebrate our pride as if it were a precious trophy that defines us. We pompously advertise the pride we believe we hold, and flash it bright before our surroundings. We perhaps do so because of our primitive nature in which it is instinctual to hide insecurities behind a grand barrier that we could define as our defense mechanism. Pride is defined as the consciousness of our dignity. Meaning, what we individually believe to be a reflection of our self-worth, conditioned by our level of awareness and perception of things. Our level of consciousness, and the definition of it, is mostly a projection of our current world and surrounding factors. Although, once the previous sentence is understood, we become aware as to what definition of consciousness we wish to abide by. Thus, our self-worth is defined on a personal level and has nothing to do with community perception. We make a choice as to which level of consciousness, i.e. awareness, is the most suitable for us. External factors such as nurture, education or the world may have initially lead us to pick up a habitual moral

of consciousness, but we eventually make a choice regarding the level of consciousness we stand to serve in life. For once it comes down to a choice being made; we either allow external factors to bias our thoughts, or we continue independent of them. Either way, a choice is a conscious decision made by an individual who has awareness of some sort. In previous posts, I have mentioned how I strongly believe that at birth, the ‘good’ and ‘evil’ in our hearts exist at equilibrium. This does not necessarily mean they are balanced at 50/50. No. Every individual finds a ratio for good and evil to exist within, that would present a balance for their personal psyche, imposing as little self-distress as possible when it comes to engaging with the outside world. As we progress through life, we understand the nature of our hearts, and as we do so, we become obsessed with growing into better people. ‘Better’ is, of course, defined on a personal note; it is either associated with power and ego mania, or higher levels of conscious awareness and love. Within doing so, we decide what dignity means to us and thus we decide what dictates our self-worth. Nonetheless, we are still part of an incompetent generation when it comes to addressing the humanitarian aspects outlining our mere existence on a community level, regardless of the definition of ‘better’ that we abide by. Has the evil within, in this current world, conquered and destroyed all hopes to awaken a speck of humility or awareness in us? We all have the ability to cause any sense of destruction if we turn our back on the responsibility naturally associated with the prevention of such havoc. The extent of damage imposed from our side is irrelevant because, at the end of the day, the definition of damage

and the extent of it are not in any way proportional to the feelings invoked. That means the extent of damage is negligible, since the outcome is definitive; i.e. damage has been caused. We have all done it. We have all caused harm to someone out there. Upon confrontation, we have strongly denied the receptor of our havoc to be entitled to any form of compensation from us; an explanation, an apology or taking responsibility for our behaviour. In fact, we have all arrived confused at the association of such acts with our so claimed selfless, perfect selves. If, however, we do accept this request, we dare put expiration dates on the hurt we have caused, based on what suits our own needs, and appallingly address prolonged grief as unjust, negating the harm that we caused. So why does that happen? Why do we react that way? We dare inflict hurt and shamelessly do not see it appropriate to take responsibility for our actions, running away from one damage site to another. Why do we fear feelings of guilt? Why do we psychopathically mirror them back to the person we hurt to avoid falling in the trap of guilt that exceeds the level we see fit for ourselves? Before attempting to answer the questions above, let’s tackle the preliminary fault in perception. Perhaps doing so will allow us to establish firm grounds of understanding of ourselves, because only then can we hope to understand others. When we think of an individual, we think of a singular species. Our judgement is usually biased by the singularity of the projected image that person made a conscious choice to appear in. We carry on, blinded by that projected image and start accepting it as the only possible truth of the nature of that human being. Should that person stray from the norms we have grown accustomed to, we suddenly have the urgency to correct the fault of our own perception of ‘natural human behaviour’ because it has deviated from regularity and consistency. Since consistency ultimately gives us the sensation of security and safety, anything that would threaten that state of mind has an urgency to be corrected. The human mind is quite a spectacular world. However, it is a world that has been conditioned to spiritually admire toxic emotions such as security. The mind has been sentenced to never seeing beyond this toxic security and has astonishingly developed mechanisms to restore it. In my opinion, this conditioning has given rise to a generation of machine-like-humans that have grown too comfortable with the known, and never adjust to understand beyond that. Perhaps it is ‘safe’ to label that as intellectual lethargy. The state in which an individual makes a conscious choice to appear to the outside world is called the ego. Many of us are familiar with this word, but we understand so little of it. The ego thrives to please the outside world so as to achieve compatibility, acceptance and hopefully some degree of admiration. Should this projected image of a fraction of man be rejected, insecurity kicks in. This is when we shackle ourselves to ‘evil’. The ego understands hurt as rejection which goes against its social uprising. It does not dare point out the factors that have triggered this insecurity within, because it has been programmed to associate doing so with weakness. When an animal is wounded, it seeks to protect itself from more harm. When many of us are wounded, we retreat to a safe distance and come up with ways to inflict pain back to what has hurt us. We excuse this ‘unethical’ mode of conduct as ‘instinctual’ and ‘natural’. This mindset is the perfect setting that triggers us to exist in a state of total self-absorption and we become too consumed with all the wrong things. Consequently, we become unaware and incomprehensible towards invoking hurt that has been projected by our self-defense mechanism of insecurity - pride. Thus, we fail to understand pain that is beyond ours, failing miserably when it comes to empathy. As such, we fail humanitarianly. We fail to understand the protocols of pain, deviating from principles of harmony. We embrace anger and spite, believing them to be the only routes towards healing. We become ensnared to a façade of a wounded ego and inevitably establish an impervious shield of arrogance - the arrogance of the Gods. The arrogance of the Gods that we believe we are righteously entitled to, could not possibly be associated with the miscreant beings that we are.

We lack simple humanitarian values; basic functioning characteristics to coexist in harmony. Yet somehow it makes sense, when we are wounded, to loudly advertise the association of perfection with our nature, finding it quite odd for anyone to ever dare label us with any flaw of some sort. It amazes me how ignorant and unaware we actually are. It amazes me how much we are lacking conscious intellect. Through our insecurity, we enable our arrogance of the Gods to arise and within doing so we merely exist, in the form of selfish maleficent beings with cowardly hearts, unable to love or protect other than ourselves. Therefore, forgive me if I cannot find it in my heart to accept the theories of evolution that emphasize we are an outcome of evolved species. This so called title of ‘evolved species’ that we so tightly cling on to, describing the science of our existence, fails before its ‘not so evolved’ cousin in the same kingdom when it comes to matters of coexistence. These ‘not so evolved’ cousins of ours show signs of basic consciousness that we fail to recognize, such as compassion, empathy, respect, loyalty and love. This arrogance of the Gods creates a grandiosity factor within us. It blinds us from seeing true reality and inevitably, we start believing that our current state is ‘evolution into species of higher intelligence and consciousness’. We so readily label anyone that defies the margins of the outcome (of our negative actions) we foresee as satisfactory for ourselves as unwell and ill. We simply do not have it in us to invest in understanding the nature of their existence, perhaps because we do not understand our own individual natural self. We so blindly chase after ‘what’, burying any evidence that would emphasize explanations stemming from ‘why’ and ‘because’ forgetting that ‘what’ only addresses things superficially. As for ‘how’, complete negation. We are so readily willing to feed our ego chasing after ‘what’. Doing so relieves us of the responsibility stemmed from creating havoc upon someone, simply because in our mind, we have labeled that person as emotionally unstable. Thus, we sacrifice another's peace of mind for our own. Upon being questioned for doing so, we run away and never accept that we built tyranny with our very own hands. We have chosen to be blinded by our ego and cannot even notice the blood drenching our hands. It's as if causing such harm has become part of our physiological existence and if ever, God forbid, we shouldn't be functioning or responding in such a negative manner, our balance is distorted, our pride hurt, and we automatically try to make ourselves feel better and powerful again at the expense of someone else's happiness. We even justify the nature of our evil with whatever nonsense we have brain washed ourselves into believing is fit for the occasion of our deed, the most common one being ‘I treat you the way you treat me’. Using that as an excuse further justifies the nature of ourselves; how far we have strayed from awareness and how we associate ego and power with dignity, for we must always win to have self-worth. Why? Why do we find it impossible to evolve beyond what concerns us, our needs, rights and wants? Why is it that we are incompetent when it comes to acknowledging that existence is beyond what is confined to ourselves? Why are we such maleficent ignorant beings who associate sympathy and empathy as the antonyms of power and ego? Perhaps because of our cowardly hearts; for it is personally easier to divert personal pain onto someone else, than to walk on the path of selfhealing. People's chain of behaviour follows a very precise cycle of patterns that is very difficult to break. We all fall under that same cycle. We understand the process of inflicting damage and do not see beyond that. We fail to comprehend that the chain of action is still going beyond that and that within playing a role in destruction, we must play a role in reconstruction; for the fastest route towards healing could only possibly be initiated through the very hands that have created brokenness. I can only hope and pray that one day would be marked in history as the day of 'spiritual awakening'. If that miraculously happens, we will then begin the process of accepting that the world is not confined to individual existence, but that our existence is part of a community and thus has an effect on a community level. HOW TO AVOID THAT NEW KITCHEN SINKING FEELING

I

t is often suggested that the bathroom and kitchen in a house can either make or break a sale and I would suggest this is particularly true of home sales in Europe and the US. I guess it makes sense as these are probably the two most-expensive-tochange rooms as it is not a case of simply updating the wall colour to achieve a new look. The majority of home sales will be on the pre-owned market and it is generally acknowledged that homes with a more appealing kitchen and bathroom will sell more quickly - and at a more attractive price - than those with outdated or highly-personalised rooms. The mass developers of new homes will generally fit modern kitchen and bathroom units with simple white or muted colours of furniture and ceramics, as these have a universal appeal that their purchasers know can be enhanced by the introduction of colours of their own choosing when selecting accessories. Thus it is important to make some carefully calculated

decisions when choosing a bespoke new or remodelled kitchen. Of course, it’s great to have the choice of the latest designs and products and the thought of installing the ultimate design that will be the envy of all your friends might be quite enticing. But there is a danger that emotion can swamp sense and reason and such emotion needs to be harnessed if you are to avoid early disappointments when the kitchen becomes quickly unfashionable or your taste changes. As well as inheriting pre-installed kitchens in several of my homes, I have designed and installed totally new kitchens in 3 of my homes, so am reviewing the good and bad points of each as I approach the time to make selections for my new villa. This will hopefully prevent me repeating previous mistakes and help to provide a kitchen which will meet my culinary requirements as well as look great for many years to come. Selecting the style of furniture is often the first consideration and a major risk if we are too driven by fashion. It is important to remember that high-fashion items quickly go out of fashion, so it’s often safer to opt for a simple style that will not date. Having initially selected a timber door style with a light green metallic woodgrain finish for my first bespoke kitchen, I quickly realised that as much as I had fallen in love with the overall appearance, it would fast go out of style and forever remind me of the 1980s. Thankfully I opted instead for a more traditional look which could better stand the test of time. Similarly, bold colours may float your boat, but will not necessarily have a mass appeal. One of my neighbours had a passion for bright

reds and installed units in a glossy red colour. She was delighted with her purchase and it was certainly the talk of the neighbourhood, but she was less than delighted when attempting to sell the property just a year later and it failed to attract a buyer for more than 18 months! It was clear that the highly stylised kitchen was not viewed by prospective purchasers as an asset, but instead as something that would be expensive to remodel. I took this into consideration when making my offer to buy a property in Amsterdam which had a hideous black and yellow kitchen. I had budgeted for an immediate remodel and ripped out all the units when I moved in, replacing with some simple wooden Quaker-style doors and a green speckled worktop. In retrospect, I should have installed a granite top in a more neutral colour, but at least it was a significant improvement over the kitchen I had removed. Kitchen number 3 was a progression into wooden doors that had been professionally hand-painted in a nice vanilla colour which look great even to this day. But I made a big mistake when I succumbed to my desire for a solid beech worktop – it looked fabulous when it was first installed, but I soon realised that it needed regular maintenance by lightly sanding before giving an application of oil every three months. Never again. Having chosen the style of units, the inbuilt features need to be selected. I believe gadgets such as a pull-out ironing board become quickly obsolete, whilst a fullheight pull-out larder unit provides great storage and corner units should definitely be fitted with devices that make maximum use of the hard-to-access and oftwasted space.

Having selected the desired style and colour of base units, splashbacks are the next key choice which should also follow the guide of providing a stylish yet timeless look. Of course, it is essential to select the major appliances before finalising any design and to ensure that the colour of these will integrate and co-ordinate with the overall look and feel of the finished kitchen. On these, I believe you will reap dividends by buying the best fridge, freezer, dishwasher and cooker/oven that you can afford and that best suits your household’s needs. A good strong sink is also a must for me – my favourite was a double, ceramic ‘butler’ sink that was deep enough to soak a mountain of dirty pots and pans. By considering my own plans for a new kitchen, I hope I have provided you with some food for thought if you too are facing a similar project. Remember the golden rules; get creative and have fun. Your dream kitchen might be just around the corner.

Bulduk

Medya Bulduk has a dream. The ambitious Swedish student with designs on education also has creative aspirations; and with a string of high profile followers, she seems destined to succeed.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Medya Bulduk. I am 24 years old and I was born and raised in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Tell us about your education. I'm studying at Stockholm University to become an upper secondary school teacher. Have you studied illustration, or are you self taught? I am self-taught. How did you get started doing what you do? I started drawing at an early age. As a child I was stubborn and picky. I wanted my drawings to be perfect and if they were not the way I wanted I would rip up the paper and start all over again. While growing up, I watched a lot of Disney movies with my little brother. During this time I would always have pencils and paper in front of me to draw the characters in the movies. I remember I could not pause the movies with our video player because the screen became blue when we paused it, so I had to draw while the

movie was on and rewind sometimes. I have always loved drawing but I did not take it seriously until after high school. I set up an account on Instagram, shared my drawings there and saw that people loved what I did. Celebrities like Taraji P. Henson shared my works and recently, Tyra Banks was also looking into my works. By sharing my artworks on social media, I began to gain confidence. It takes time to realize what you are good at - even if it’s right in front of you! Drawing, creating and writing is a part of me and something I will always hold on to. What do you do for a living? I’m studying right now but sometimes I work as a substitute teacher. How would you describe your creative style? It is difficult to explain it because I love everything that has to do with creating, not only drawing. I draw everything that pops into my head.

Do you sell your work? Not at the moment, but I will soon - so stay tuned! How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? My ideas can come out of nowhere. From looking at photographs, watching movies, reading books or even listening to music. Life is my inspiration. Everything that happens in life is an inspiration. When do you get your best ideas? It varies, sometimes I get ideas when I least expect it. What art supplies do you use? I use prismacolor pencils, but I also tend to use acrylic colors and makeup. Let’s talk about creating an illustration from scratch. How does that process look for you? How do you start and what steps do you follow? There are no complicated steps. I use size A3 paper for the most part and begin with the sketching. When I am satisfied with the sketch I move on to the coloring process by using colored pencils. After that I use acrylic colors to highlight some points and some makeup to make it look more blended. During this process I like to drink coffee or tea and have music on in the background. What is art to you? Art is everywhere. Everything you see is art. How long does it typically take for you to finish a piece? It depends on when I want the piece to be done. I want to enjoy the progress but since I am a person who likes to get things done very quickly I draw nonstop until my back hurts. However, it may take a few hours. What do you hope to accomplish with your work? I want to share my art with everyone and inspire people to be creative. What advice would you give to those just beginning? Do not give up! No matter how hard it gets or how bad you think your art is. There may be people who adore your art. It is always good to have support and people that can help you when you want to succeed in something. But you can succeed on your own too. Believe in yourself and do not let negative people who failed with their own dreams affect yours.

IN PRAISE OF THE KEEPERS OF SECRETS

John MacArthur John MacArthur was born in England, but has Celtic ancestry, so loves to sing. Abandoning his choral training, he sings songs of love and loss, owning several antique acoustic guitars. He has degrees in physics, chemistry and mathematics, has studied theology and business management, so, in fine nomadic tradition, he can call several universities home. After seven years in Kuwait, he 'retired' and laughs at himself every morning, commuting between his Paris island home and country house in rural France where he lives with his wife, a food writer and stylist, and, perhaps soon, a dog, should he be allowed one. Much to her dismay, he is thinking of taking up the mandolin. He has written for various publications worldwide on whatever happens to catch his imagination.

M

y dentist is an Irishman with a colourful personality, boundless good humour and a way of making visits memorable; and not because of his endless fund of jokes. Having root canal work when you can barely stop laughing is an almost schizophrenically surreal experience and it can’t all be blamed on the anaesthesia. Of course, one can’t exactly just wander in to see him and shoot the breeze over a glass or two of Novocaine. While drilling holes in molars, he is protected by the most important people in the surgery. He has ‘minders’. These are not black-clad, hulking men with shaven heads and no necks; they are, more often than not, frail-looking bespectacled ladies in dark, professional suits with chic little blouses who guard the entrance to his cave for him, letting none through without appointment or pleasant disposition. They are, of course, his administration professionals. Under the watchful eyes of political correctness, we are not, it seems, allowed to call them ‘secretaries’ these days, the word itself has far too much subtlety of meaning. In Middle English, it meant ‘one entrusted with a secret’. No doubt when medieval Popes had secretaries, their secrets were of greater significance than the abscess on my tooth, but the principle is clear.

Speaking of Popes, their secret-keepers come in a variety of different disguises, degrees of seniority or flavours, rather like Baskin-Robbins ice cream. Like the present incumbent secretary to Pope Francis, some are humble priests, loyal to their boss when he was no more than a humble bishop, riding his coattails as he rose through the murky ranks of Vatican hierarchy. Others are heavyweight intellectuals, professors of canon law, such as Pope Benedict’s man, the formidable Archbishop of Urbs Salvia, Georg Gänswein. Indeed, it was his elevation to the status of an archbishop that alerted keen Vatican-watchers to the possibility that Benedict was thinking of stepping down. It was his job to do what most secretaries do, organize the boss. But the bigger the boss, the greater the responsibility. He had to arrange Papal audiences both public and private, regardless of their size or rank of visitors – as well as handling the logistics for large Vatican events and ceremonies as well as the Pope's travels both in Rome and all of Italy. When you are invited to meet a Pope, seniority matters little but protocol must always be followed. President Obama gets just the same treatment as an obscure South American nun, and it was Gänswein who usually accompanied

both when they met the ‘Holy Father’. Photographs of people being granted a Papal audience often show visitors flanked by Swiss Guards resplendently clad in purple, red and gold with the Pope’s secretary, discreet in black with a purple sash, gently steering them to the meeting area. There is, it would seem, a dress code for the Vatican. I visited St Peter’s recently and in common with all the rest of the Italian fashion industry - every cleric on show was beautifully turned out in a bespoke black cassock - the more senior the more discreetly well-cut the garments were. Apparently, the Papal secretary is expected to look like understated Armani at all times. He gets help from local agencies when the Pope travels overseas, since his boss has to have close quarter protection, special vehicles and so on, but the dress code goes with him. He has also personally greeted visiting heads of state from time to time. When Benedict unexpectedly retired, his secretary accompanied him into obscurity, perhaps because there were quite a few secrets it might be better to keep veiled than to risk being exposed. In the United States, which has a rather sparse history compared to that of the Vatican, the word ‘secretary’ can have quite a different shade of meaning. Jack Lew is the ‘First Secretary to the Treasury’. His job isn’t exactly sitting on the President’s lap and taking minutes with a notepad and pencil as one nine year old was hilariously described as saying during a White House visit. Instead, The Secretary - usually referred to as ‘Mr. Secretary’- is responsible for formulating and recommending domestic and international financial, economic and tax policy and participating in the formulation of broad fiscal policies that have general significance for the economy. He is also in charge of managing the public debt, currently running at an impressive nineteen trillion dollars. He is, amongst other things, the US Governor of the International Monetary Fund, and it is his signature that appears on every dollar bill which makes it legally transferable. He has his own distinctive flag and seal and is fifth in line to the Presidential succession. This is indeed a far cry from our usual understanding of what ‘secretaries’ are supposed to do. An even more stratospheric role is played by the elected head of the United Nations – known as ‘Secretary General’ Ban Ki-Moon. Franklin D Roosevelt described the role as a ‘world moderator’, which isn’t an unfair definition since the job usually involves persuading various people around the world to get along and not fight each other. The Secretary General is the world’s foremost diplomat and much of his time is spent engaging with causes which, if left to themselves, would result in destruction and bloodshed. He is both advocate and referee, influencer and governor with a mandate from the world to intervene and use the considerable weight of the UN and its Security Council to make the world a safer place. The relative freedom of operation of the UN secretariat has meant that exceptional figures have led it in times past. One of the most notable was the luminous Dag Hammarskjöld, a Swedish diplomat of almost legendary status and posthumous winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961. On the grounds that peace is often discovered internally with a discipline of silence, he planned and supervised every detail in the creation of a ‘meditation room’ at the UN Headquarters. This is a place of silent calm where people can withdraw into themselves, regardless of their faith, creed, or religion and was inspired by Hammarskjöld’s reverence for mystical writers like Meister Eckhardt. Some have argued that this alone was the most important contribution he made and it was during his tenure in office that an iconic bronze sculpture was installed in the North Garden of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It was a gift from the then USSR and shows a workman beating a sword into a ploughshare, symbolic of a desire to put an end to war and to convert the means of destruction into creative tools for the benefit of mankind. During the height of the Cold War, such rapprochement must have required astonishingly adroit diplomacy.

mathematician and a soldier, a graduate of the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, UK, one of the most prestigious military schools in the world. His job is seen as unifying the relative perspectives of the members of the GCC and its collective relationship with the rest of the world, meeting with local and international Heads of State. Like Ban KiMoon, he is at heart a diplomat but with a specific focus on the internal and external affairs of the Arabian Peninsula. Rich in oil and banking influence, the area needs strong, measured and careful management and in cricketing parlance, he is seen as a ‘safe pair of hands’. The common thread running through all of the various descriptions of what ‘secretaries’ do is the concept of ‘service’. Not, it should be stressed, a ‘servant’ whose activities are at the whim of a capricious and whimsical supervisor. Most of those in high office are there because their peers have recognized their exceptional abilities and have released them to perform delicate and important functions. No less, however, should be thought of those whose tasks are more mundane, their responsibilities less weighty or their roles more supportive than managerial. A personal assistant who mishandles her boss’s travel itinerary may cause him to miss an important meeting and lose a contract worth millions. A medical secretary who refuses access to a surgeon could potentially place a life in danger. These are important, vital people within an organization and their contribution should neither be demeaned, dismissed nor overlooked. The last week in April is celebrated as Administrative Professionals Week, formerly National Secretaries Week. The title was changed in 2000 to encompass the expanding responsibilities and wide-ranging job titles of administrative support staff. It was created to recognize ‘the secretary, upon whose skills, loyalty, and efficiency the functions of business and government offices depend,’ and to call attention ‘through favorable publicity, to the tremendous potential of the secretarial career.’ No matter whether that career leads to the White House, a palace or indeed a small dental practice, it is right to recognize and support the contributions of secretaries. All of them.

JUMP-TASTIC!

“Bouncing is what Tiggers do best” – Tigger, Winnie the Pooh. A.A. Milne

R

egular readers of CityPages will know that I love to search out new ways of keeping fit and having fun. So far this year I’ve tried my hand at short and distance running, spinning and squash. Not bad for a 42 year old book-worm mum with no previous fitness experience - or interest. This month, inspired by a birthday party invitation received by my son to ‘Trampo’, it’s Trampolining. Watching my son and his friends in fits of giggles, competing to bounce higher, trying crazy jumps and running across trampolines, the thought struck me - that looks like a lot of fun and a fabulous all over body work-out. Putting aside all thoughts of how silly I might look doing it, I was desperate to have a go (obviously not there and then, as my son would never have forgiven his totally embarrassing mum for joining in when all his friends were there to see). The next weekend, however, confident that no one was around that he knew, my son and I returned. I was right, it was enormous fun and to my relief I was not the only adult joining in as there were quite a few parents bouncing and grinning like Tigger. Chatting to the team at the front desk I learned they have times of the week set aside for ladies and adults or older youths only. Trampolining is surprisingly exhausting and I had a definite ‘glow’ about me after 30 minutes.

Ali Stewart Born in Cambridge, England, Ali enjoyed a career in the logistics and safety sector for 15 years. Following the birth of her son, she switched careers to pursue a life long love for education and teaching. Since moving to Kuwait in 2013, Ali’s interests include fitness, healthy living and running. From her University days she has maintained a passion for world history and creative writing, although thanks to her son, she can also now consider herself quite the expert on all things ‘Marvel super heroes’ and Karate related.

My husband asked, “Isn’t it boring just jumping up and down?” Absolutely not! Time flew by and rather than just jumping up and down I tried my hand at various basic moves, running across different trampolines (racing my son, who easily won) and took advantage of their trampolining basketball areas. The next day I could really feel that the muscles in my legs and back had received a good work-out and I was keen to investigate what the benefits of ‘bouncing’ actually are. I had not realised that Trampolining is an Olympic sport; a little quick research online showed me how graceful and elegant the professionals move and contort their bodies into the most beautiful of lines and shapes. Of course, my moves bore no resemblance to these, but I like to think I may have invented some whole new moves for future consideration - the ‘Crash Land’, the ‘Head First Tumble’ and the ‘Face Flattener’ are all moves I think the Olympic committee should consider for Rio 2016. Jesting aside, there are proven health benefits to ‘bouncing’ and some obvious hazards too. I was interested to discover that trampolining can be considered a better form of exercise for some than running, as it significantly lessens the stresses placed on your weight-bearing joints. When you jump on a trampoline, the flexible surface moves with you as you land, reducing the impact to your body, especially your knees and ankles. On small home mini-trampolines (or rebounders as they are known) it is often used as a means of introducing an exercise programme to those who are recuperating from injury or are physically challenged. Much like walking, it can be adjusted to practically any ability level, and no other specialist equipment

32

is required. Studies have shown that trampoline exercises firm and tone muscles, increase your oxygen capacity, improve your sense of balance and provide an effective cardiovascular workout. Bouncing is also a great way to develop your coordination and motor skills through the practise of concentrating on maintaining the body’s position, controlling different muscles and limbs whilst anticipating your next action. I was fascinated to learn that NASA use trampolines as a means of training astronauts to perform skilful activities unsupported by gravity. There have been some well documented risks and injuries associated with trampolining, the most common being fractures and strains through collisions with other people, improper landing during jumps or stunts, falling off or jumping from the trampoline and falling onto the springs or frame. Of course no form of physical activity is risk free and many risks can be lessened by either using professional equipment under proper instruction or ensuring that any equipment you use at home is properly maintained, sitting on a level surface and placed away from any structures or overhanging items. Ultimately I really enjoyed my trampolining experience and although I am quite confident that I looked totally ridiculous, I was having way too much of a good time to care. The adults or ladies only time slots might be more appealing for those who wish to try the activity more discreetly with friends. Or if you wish to avoid public embarrassment altogether, the garden trampolines or home mini rebounders are a fantastic option. I am seriously considering buying a rebounder for the home, much to my son’s delight (and my husband’s bemusement). As Tigger would no doubt agree, bouncing is a huge amount of fun, giving you perhaps the closest sensation to the feeling of flying and free abandonment without spending a fortune. As always, I am a huge believer that anytime you can engage in an exercise that is fun, you are more likely to stick with it. Trampolining gets a thumbs up from me. ‘Trampo’ is located at Promenade Mall, Hawally.

hen used correctly, antibiotics (and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents) can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. These drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. It is reported that at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly, 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. Antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability to effectively control or kill bacterial growth. The three main ways resistance develops include natural resistance to certain types of antibiotics, genetic mutation or through the acquisition of resistance from another bacterium. This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials. Prescription medications are not always the culprits either. Antibiotic use in livestock and food production may also contribute to resistance.

34

MAY, 2016

Become educated: Unnecessary prescription of antibiotics by doctors is one of the contributing factors to antibiotics resistance. Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25% of patients ask their doctor for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them. This can help prevent the development of resistance.

Confirm need: Only take antibiotics when bacteria - parasite or fungus-based illness - are identified. These illnesses may include strep throat, urinary tract or ear infections.

Take a wait-and-see approach: Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viral illnesses will go away within 2 weeks.

Adhere to dosage guidelines:

When antibiotic resistance occurs, a stronger drug may be needed to treat an infection that was once taken care of by a milder medication.

When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future.

Prudent antibiotic use can help prevent the recurrence of resistance. Individuals can help the process in a number of ways.

Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

HAPPINESS

t’s a well known fact that sunshine makes us feel better; and I’m not just talking about our daily dose of Vitamin D. Seeing the early morning sunshine can quite literally lift the clouds that are hovering over us, leaving us feeling happy, carefree and ready to take on the world. Certainly, when the sun makes a rare appearance in the UK, the change of mood is palpable. So why is it that in Kuwait, a country where the sun shines virtually every day of the year, so many people are miserable? I appreciate that nobody’s life is perfect and we all have worries or concerns, but sometimes people grumble about the most trivial things, when in the whole scheme of things, they have nothing to complain about at all. Walking to the gym this week, I was treated to a cheery wave and a big smile from my local street cleaner. He is paid very little to do a dirty job, often in extremely high temperatures, and no doubt has next to nothing when it comes to material possessions. Yet still, he managed a smile. In the same street, I witnessed an extremely irate lady, impatiently blasting the horn of her luxury 4x4, waiting for someone to emerge from a shop to provide her with the instant service, to which she believed she was entitled. The contrast between the two was almost laughable. It wasn’t just their lifestyle which set them apart, it was their attitude. One, seemingly with little to smile about, was a picture of happiness as he picked up someone else’s litter. The other, who clearly wanted for nothing, wore a frown as deep as the Michael Kors tote bag sitting snugly on the plush leather seat of her top of the range Mercedes. I’ve witnessed the same conflicting behaviour on more than one occasion. Imagine standing at a petrol pump for hours at a time, the heat draining your energy and the fumes polluting your air. Not ideal working conditions for anyone, but the pump attendants always manage a smile as they relieve us of the need to emerge from the comfort of our air conditioned vehicles into the heat of the thermal forecourt. Surely, the very least they deserve is a courteous word of thanks? What they

often get instead, is the brunt of someone’s temper after they’ve been forced to wait in a queue for more than five minutes. These guys can only dream of owning a vehicle the likes of which they are re-fuelling. Yet, it’s the attendant who’s wearing a smile, rather than the impatient driver. Ice-cream vendors can often be seen risking their lives as they pedal their mobile ice-boxes along Kuwait’s busy roads. Rather them than me. But more often than not, they’re smiling as they do so; which is more than can be said for the aggressive drivers who would no sooner give way to a pedalling pauper as they would pay heed to a red light. Whatever makes these drivers think their life is worth more than someone else’s? If nothing else, they should ask themselves why, if the underprivileged can manage a smile, they can’t do the same. If ever I should forget, my taxi driver is another reminder of just how lucky I am. Not only does he arrive on time with a pleasant smile and a friendly greeting, he spends all day on Kuwait’s crazy roads to save enough money to visit his family. He only sees his children twice a year, he suffers abuse from passengers, some of whom refuse to pay their fare, and he lives a lonely existence in an apartment smaller than most people’s kitchen. It’s a tough life but a life nonetheless, and one he’s extremely grateful for. There will always be an unfair distribution of wealth. The imbalance has existed for centuries, and will continue to exist for many more; and let’s face it, it’s this imbalance that makes our world the wonderfully diverse place it is today. They key is to recognise those less fortunate than ourselves and to treat them with the respect they deserve. Many wouldn’t choose to live the life into which they were born but they make the most of the hand they were dealt; and in doing so, make life more comfortable for the rest of us. So when you wake up in the morning and the sun is rising on another beautiful day in Kuwait, raise a smile of your own and remember how lucky you are. A smile is infectious, so let’s spread a little happiness.

e are a species that ‘runs to and fro’ and knowledge is increasing. Some of us will have very elderly relatives who are illiterate, who remember horse-drawn buggies, strangely shaped telephones and black and white TV. Some in Kuwait may have heard their grandparents’ stories about living in tents in the desert. We have made more progress in the last hundred years than in the previous millennium in terms of ‘quality of life’ – if such can be defined in terms of more leisure and better food for less effort. It could be argued that the discovery and exploitation of oil as a worldwide resource to a power-hungry world has fuelled the development of the technologically futuristic world in which we now live. In 1850, people, especially if they were poor, might never travel more than a few hundred kilometres from where they were born. People lived and died on farms and in villages. Some still wandered nomadically, moving their sheep and camels from one oasis to the next, as their forebears had done for millennia. Life changed little from one generation to the next. Then came the black gold. It released a flood of inventions (or better tools, perhaps) and fuel for the internal combustion engine, giving ordinary people the chance to travel long distances in their own personal carriage. Henry Ford, Karl Benz and Gottfried Daimler, amongst others, opened the floodgates to the masses. At the turn of the twentieth century an extraordinary partnership

was forged between two of the most innovative minds of the moment. Henry Royce, a successful engineer and Charles Rolls, owner of one of the UK’s first motor car dealerships, agreed to sell cars under the name Rolls Royce. In 1913, after completing a rally through grueling Alpine passes, devised with the singular purpose to test the participant vehicles almost to destruction, the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost won every stage and became known as ‘the finest motor car in the world’, despite not having any braking to the front wheels. The pioneering spirit of their founders kept the marque at the forefront of emerging technologies. In the 1930s a Phantom III was the first car to be built with a V12 engine and up until 1959, every Silver Wraith had individually built coachwork. One of the great selling points of a Rolls was that it was whisperquiet and almost totally free from extraneous vibration. The rich, of course, must be protected from the vulgar sound of the street. Its badge, the Spirit of Ecstasy, depicting a young woman with a finger to her lips is one of the most recognizable icons of all time and the myths about her conjoining the mysterious harnessing of great power with a living organism of superb grace, style and drama, are legendary. Nikola Tesla was an unsung hero. Whereas Thomas Edison won all the showy prizes for his electric lights, Tesla was the real genius. He was best known for his contributions to the design of the modern AC supply system as well as a variety of electromagnetic ideas that

were so far ahead of their time that relatively few made it to fruition. However, his induction motor, patented in the early 1890s, in the formative years of electric power development was transformative and visionary – he was indeed a futurist of astonishing perception. The unit of magnetic flux density is named after him, as well as a manufacturer of electric cars. Today, a rotor not so very far removed from Tesla’s original design and with sufficient power to accelerate a car can fit into the palm of the hand. It remains to be seen which of these legacies will have the most impact. I suspect only a few students of advanced physics will ever get to use his unit, but a very much greater number will get to know about the Tesla car as the technology expands. In history books of the future, Elon Musk, the founder of the company, may very well be looked back upon as Tesla’s natural heir, the groundbreaker of technologies we once dreamed about but thought impossible. His Model P90D has a dual motor - that’s the D part, the P part stands for ‘performance’. It’s an all-wheel drive vehicle having a governed top speed of a whisker under 250 kilometres an hour. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in a stupefying three seconds when in what the manufacturer calls ‘ludicrous mode’. And, yes, ‘stupid quick’ or not, it’s true. When we compare this with the best of the best fossil fuel cars, such as the Porsche 918 Spyder or the McLaren F1, which are tenths of seconds quicker off the blocks, it’s worth bearing in mind that the Tesla is a family hatchback, not a sports car. It has cup holders. It has a panoramic glass roof. You take your mother-in-law and two kids out for lunch in it. From Tesla’s own website, the performance is described as ‘exhilarating’, which puts it mildly. Unlike a gasoline internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving parts, Tesla electric motors have only one moving piece: the rotor, spinning very, very fast and pulling 1500 amps from the battery array. Special fusing had to be developed so that it wouldn’t overload and fry the car’s electronics which are getting more sophisticated year on year. As a result, acceleration is instantaneous, silent and smooth, without a drop of gasoline. We men are, I suppose, culturally attuned to popping the hood on a car, peering knowledgeably and prodding various parts with our finger. Most of us don’t have much of a clue what we’re actually doing, but a few grunts and references to dual carburettors or some such is usually enough to convince an onlooker that we do. Popping the hood on an electric car is a culture shock. Where are all those cleverly turning mechanical parts, the familiar sweep of a V8? They’re not there. Instead there’s a grey box, underneath which the mattress-sized batteries required are housed underfloor. If their published advertising is to be believed, Tesla's commitment to developing and refining the technologies to enable self-driving capability is a core part of their mission. They are at the forefront of hardware design allowing for step-by-step introduction of self-driving

technology: a forward radar, a forward-looking camera, long-range ultrasonic sensors positioned to sense over three metres around the car in every direction at all speeds, and a high-precision digitally-controlled electric assist braking system. It has an autopilot function to steer within a lane, change lanes and manage speed by using active, trafficaware cruise control. Digital control of motors, brakes and steering helps avoid collisions from the front and sides, as well as preventing the car from wandering off the road. The car can scan for a parking space, alert when one is available, and parallel park on command. About the only thing it has in common with a Silver Ghost is the absence of noise. Tesla’s published mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transportation. To achieve that goal, they have to produce electric vehicles in sufficient volume to force change in the automobile industry. With a planned production rate of half a million cars per year in the latter half of this decade, Tesla alone will require today’s entire worldwide production of lithium ion batteries. Hence the Tesla Gigafactory was born of necessity and will supply enough batteries to support projected vehicle demand. In 2020, it will reach full capacity and produce more lithium ion batteries annually than were produced worldwide only three years ago and there are spinoffs for powering homes, businesses and an array of other possible uses as the batteries become more efficient. The Tesla is universally acknowledged by car experts to be one of the best cars ever made. So, apart from the high cost per unit – think of parting with about a hundred thousand dollars at the moment - which will surely fall as the technology becomes more ubiquitous, why doesn’t everyone have one? In some US states, they’re banned from sale because dealerships which are protected by law, foresee their profits eroding, perceiving Tesla’s direct sales as a threat or ‘unfair competition’ in an already crowded marketplace. In other words, established businesses are leveraging Government power to enrich themselves and the competition they prevent looks unfair only to those who profit from a protected market. Whether we like it or not, the days of fossil fuel transportation are numbered. In fifty years – and probably much less – it will be as inconceivable to climb into a petrol-engined car as to drive a horse and buggy to work. They will be relegated to museums, concours d’ élegance and other showplaces where the masterpieces of the past are preserved like mosquitoes in a drop of amber. We will overcome our cultural prejudice as noise from throbbing V8 engines, instead of being viscerally exciting, becomes intrusive and unnecessary. And, the streets will be a lot safer.

BAGGAGE, BABIES AND BODY ODOURS

Paul Tunbridge A professional Facilities Manager from England, and with work experience across mainland Europe before arriving in Kuwait in 2007 Paul's interests include architecture and gardening as well as creative writing and the arts in general.

I

think everyone likes to go on vacation; taking the opportunity to escape from everyday life and experience something different for a while, whether it be the exploration of a new city or soaking up the sun on a deserted beach. Having just returned from three weeks in far distant places during which I enjoyed the time to relax and regenerate my batteries, I am reminded that as much as I enjoy my vacations, I equally dislike the travelling element required for me to reach and return from my chosen destinations. In this month’s rant, therefore, I shall comment on some of my personal travel observations and irritations.

Baggage I appreciate that airlines want to be competitive and one way of differentiating between the carriers is the offering of less or more generous baggage allowances. But it all gets very confusing and induces a veritable tombola trying to decide what goes into which case, even before leaving home! Am I restricted to 20 kilos per item of luggage? Or is it 23kilos? And how come I’m allowed a maximum of 37 kilos but only one piece of luggage? I reach the airport and wonder why home luggage weighing scales never read the same as the scales at baggage check-in counters. And why are the check-in scales not consistently calibrated? I see a group of three travellers checking into my flight with

42

MAY, 2016

around 27 large pieces of co-ordinated Louis Vuitton and am curious to know if the aircraft would even leave the ground if all passengers similarly failed to pack ‘just the essentials’ in equal measure? Oh, and will I be charged for excess baggage if I’m travelling with 30 kilos of belly-fat more than the average passenger? Just a couple of years old, my principal suitcase was chosen because it seemed pretty robust. I always try to pack it with an even weight distribution, lock it and secure with a belt that makes it easier to identify on the collection carousel. Yet I always worry (and seemingly with very good reason) that it will not arrive safely or at the same time as me - it would not be the first time for me, or even the second. As it happened, on this trip it suffered a split which can only be explained by suffering mistreatment in the handling, resulting in the need to employ a luggage cling-wrap service before embarking on my homeward flight, lest the carousel be littered with my dirty socks and underwear! Perhaps the baggage handlers deliberately target items labelled with ‘Fragile’ stickers, just for fun?! Carry-ons are equally puzzling to me. Apparently I am allowed one small case of restricted proportions, plus a laptop bag. Apparently ladies my also carry a handbag, which makes me sense a lack of gender equality, but I watch in amazement as some folk board with a small suitcase, back-pack, laptop, shoulder bag and dutyfree carrier bag - not forgetting the obligatory neckcushion! I wonder how the overhead bins will cope.

My final words in the baggage department have to be reserved for backpacks or, more accurately, for some of the thoughtless people that wear them. Do they not realise that they need to take extra care with their movements when wearing such things in tightly restricted spaces such as when moving down the aisles of an aircraft? Do they really not know that what to them may be a simple turn has the potential to cause injury or upset to fellow passengers?

on and over seats and staring at neighbouring passenger who may have aroused their curiosity. Of course, children learn from example.

Airport Check-In

Rude and Ignorant Passengers

Queuing for check-in and immigration is a necessary inconvenience when travelling, but why do airlines not work harder to minimise the aggravation and discomfort caused to their customers? Having made a 3-hour road trip to arrive in time for my scheduled departure from Sydney, there were no more than 3 counters manned by the airline’s staff to check in the economy class passengers on a full flight. Hence my 3-hour road trip was followed by a frustrating 2 hours in a long and winding queue! Not only that, but I was unable to enjoy my anticipated pre-boarding relax-with-coffee time because I had to go straight to the boarding gate and my next 13-hour flight.

Ignoring instructions is simply unacceptable when those instructions are for the safety and protection of all. So why do so many passengers insist on ignoring the simple requests of cabin staff, putting both themselves and others at potential risk. Whether the use of mobile telephones or other personal electronic devices does or doesn’t interfere with the equipment on a flight, if you’re asked to switch them off during take-off and landing, why not do as you’re told? And when the seatbelt sign is switched on, why continue to walk around? Oh yes, and before reclining the seat, why not respect the person seated behind by first

I read recently that Virgin have introduced a Kids Class Travel option on some routes, whereby children sit in their own segregated cabin where they are entertained and cared for by trained staff. What an innovative and excellent idea!

checking that their head is not in the way of a safe recline?! But at least have the decency to apologise if you give them an unexpected headache!

Body Odours Flying Babies I dare say there are not many people who relish the thought of a long flight during which there are babies crying incessantly. But I find that with responsible parenting, crying babies need not present a major annoyance. On my flights there were quite a few babies both infront and behind me and, yes, they cried a bit. By sleeping with some carefully selected music coming through the headphones, however, my zeds were pretty much undisturbed. Much more annoying than crying babies, for me, are unruly and misbehaving children; children who do not remain in their seats but insist on running up and down the aisles, swinging on every armrest as they go, knocking any passenger who may have fallen asleep, climbing

Finally, I must make a plea for all travellers to consider their personal hygiene prior to travel. Travelling in confined spaces has the potential to make us hot and sticky. We need to be aware of this and of the effect it can have on our fellow passengers. A pre-flight shower and an application of deodorant costs almost nothing but will assist towards a more pleasant flight for those forced to sit alongside each other. Some pleasant scent or cologne will also be beneficial, but not too much of the strong smellies please, as they can be overpowering. Care over pre-flight eating is also recommended, as garlic breath tends to linger and fellow passengers are unlikely to be appreciative of any after-effects from eating baked beans, prunes or Brussels sprouts! I shall say no more on this.

I wish you happy travels, folks! CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

FIT FOR A QUEEN

here better to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II than the British Embassy Kuwait? H. E. Matthew Lodge, British Ambassador to Kuwait, and his wife, Mrs. Alexia Lodge, hosted a garden party on 20th April which was, quite literally, fit for a queen. In the presence of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak AlSabah, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, invited guests enjoyed a typically British soiree within the beautifully manicured Embassy grounds. Greeting his guests with a flawless Arabic welcome, Mr. Lodge went on to deliver a heartfelt speech, not only congratulating Her Majesty on her milestone birthday but also highlighting the longstanding and continued relationship between the two countries. Taking the opportunity to mention the 55th anniversary of Kuwait’s independence, the 25th anniversary of her liberation, and the 10th anniversary of His Highness The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed AlJaber Al-Sabah’s ascension to the throne, he concluded proceedings by cutting the ceremonial birthday cake and paying tribute to Her Majesty The Queen. The British Monarchy has certainly given us plenty to celebrate in recent years. The much anticipated marriage of Prince William to Catherine Middleton in 2011 was the perfect excuse for street parties and exultation and saw people from across the globe come together to witness the union of a new generation of royals. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 was another glorious occasion of pomp and ceremony enjoyed by a multinational audience. This was followed in 2013 and 2015 by the birth of two further great-grandchildren and heirs to the throne, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, prompting more jubilation and delight. In September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest serving monarch ever to reign over the UK. Despite insisting she wanted ‘little fuss’, her record-breaking achievement was acknowledged and

celebrated by many. Her 90th birthday is yet another significant date in the Royal calendar. Although her actual birthday fell on 21st April, the official celebrations are not due to take place in London until May. They include a star-studded event in the private grounds of Windsor Castle with a special programme to include music, song, dance and equestrian displays. Pop princess Kylie Minogue OBE, classical singer Katherine Jenkins OBE and Academy Award winning actress Dame Helen Mirren are among those set to feature - not forgetting the Queen’s Mounted Troops and 100 pipers. Further celebrations will take place on The Queen’s official birthday on 11th June when Her Majesty will attend a Birthday Parade at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. The following day, she will attend a Patron’s Lunch to celebrate her lifelong patronage of more than 600 charities and national organizations. This is also an opportunity to give thanks to thousands of charity workers for their continued hard work and commitment. However, the British Embassy Kuwait can be proud of its own celebrations. Unlike the UK, sunshine was guaranteed for this particular garden party making it the perfect venue to gather, socialize and pay tribute to a very special sovereign. Over 500 guests attended the event creating a colourful assembly of costume and an occasion full of smiles. Entertainment was provided by the Pipes and Drums of Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland who not only performed their usual military repertoire but also, upon request, broke with tradition and played a unique version of the sing-a-long classic ‘Happy Birthday’. Thank you Mr. Ambassador for your hospitality, it was truly a day to remember.

usk is the name used to describe the strongsmelling brownish substance secreted by the male of the musk deer. Each adult male representing this animal species has a musk gland that lies in a sac positioned between the genitals and the umbilicus. It has been used in perfume since ancient times and is one of the most expensive animal products in the world. Economical and ethical changes resulted in the use of natural musk being prohibited in 1979 - obtaining the deer musk meant killing the endangered animal. These days, synthetic musk is used almost exclusively in perfumery and this ‘white musk’ note is one of the most commonly used in the creation of perfumes. It adds a delicate hint of warmth and sensuality and reduces the evaporation rate, thus keeping its scent for longer. Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) praised musk, saying “It is the purest of all your perfumes”.

D

uring pregnancy, a large number of immense changes take place in the body. It is the only period in human life, excluding the in-utero part, when so many physiological adaptations happen very quickly. From the mother’s respiratory system to the heart and the musculoskeletal system, the physiology adapts to accommodate the greatest change of all: growing a baby. It’s only natural to assume, that for everything to progress smoothly, there needs to be ample availability of energy and nutrients. The first three months of pregnancy, a period also known as the first trimester, are crucial in many ways. The fetus develops rapidly and the foundations are laid for the subsequent development of every organic system later on. During this time, however, weight gain is very slow – typically, it shouldn’t exceed 1 to 1.5kg. Energy requirements therefore, aren’t significantly

48

MAY, 2016

higher for the first trimester, putting at rest the old saying that ‘mothers need to eat for two’. But despite not needing more calories, the motherto-be must make sure that she gets all the required nutrients while also avoiding the intake of certain foods that my harm the developing embryo. A crucial nutrient during the first three months is folate, also known as folic acid. Folic acid is commonly found in green leafy vegetables. It is advised that pregnant women should supplement their diets with 600mcg daily for at least 12 weeks and for those planning to get pregnant, supplementing with 400mcg daily of folate should start before conceiving. Research has shown that deficiencies in this nutrient during the first trimester increase the risk of the baby developing neural tube defects. Another nutrient that is particularly important during pregnancy is iron. Daily needs increase from

18mg/day to 27mg/day, so most women need to make a concentrated effort to get enough from their diet or supplement. The body does become much more efficient at storing iron, however it can be hard to meet iron requirements from food alone so supplementation can be recommended and required by a doctor. It is important to note that the iron in plant foods (non haeme) is not absorbed as well as in animal foods, but this can improve by eating foods that are rich in vitamin C. Tea and coffee may inhibit iron absorption and should be avoided at meal times - the best timing for this is between meals. Calcium also reduces iron absorption so should be eaten, or supplement taken, at different times to an iron rich meal. Calcium is an important mineral for the mother to maintain her bone health throughout pregnancy and provide enough calcium for the baby’s teeth and bones, especially during the last trimester. If the mother doesn’t meet her calcium needs the baby will go on to draw it out of her bones so it is important to meet the recommended daily intake during pregnancy - 1000mg per day. Calcium can be found in the following food sources: milk, yoghurt, cheese, fortified soy, rice, almond and oat milks, canned fish, unhulled tahini, almonds and dried figs, hard tofu (particularly when it is set).

accordingly, supplemental ingestion of vitamin B12 and iron might be needed, always in agreement with the attending physician or midwife. The period after giving birth, also known as the ‘fourth trimester’ is also nutritionally challenging. The body needs to recover from the stress and trauma of the delivery process. Moreover, it should be adequately fueled to produce ample milk of high quality, which is the single most nutritious food source for the newborn. Caloric needs are somewhat increased when compared to the pre-pregnancy period by 300-500kcal daily, resembling the second to third trimester. Lactating mothers need at least 1800-2200 daily to properly support milk production. Particular attention should be given to foods rich in calcium, as the body will draw from the mother’s bones to enrich milk. Take a calcium supplement if you don’t ingest adequate amounts with food. Choose nutrient-dense food sources and avoid pre-made and processed foods. Certain substances contained in food may pass on to breast milk, altering its flavour or giving your baby gas and colic pains. Coffee, chocolate, legumes and certain vegetables such as onions, garlic, cabbage and cauliflower may have this effect.

Omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy are also essential as the body cannot produce it itself. They are known as Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA appears to be limited to infants and they rely on it from their mother. The foods that have ALA are linseeds, walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseed oil. DHA is needed for your baby’s brain and nerve development. Foods that contain DHA and EPA are oily fish and eggs. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin produced in our skin during the exposure to UV radiation from the sun. It plays an important role in our bone health and helps calcium become absorbed from the gut into the bones. Having enough vitamin D during pregnancy is particularly important as the baby relies on the mother’s stores for their bone development. Foods that contain vitamin D are oily fish, milk, eggs, butter, fortified milks and soymilks. You can also top up your vitamin D through safe exposure to sunlight It’s important to note that there are certain foods that are best avoided or consumed in moderation. Therefore, while it is necessary to include fish - as they provide much-needed omega-3 - one should be cautious with some fish and shellfish that contain too much mercury: swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish among them. Pregnant women should opt for shrimp, salmon, pollock, anchovies and trout, and aim for one to two portion per week. In cases where the mother-to-be can’t eat fish, then it is recommended to get a fish-oil supplement, preferably high in DHA and low in EPA, as the former is what the developing brain needs the most. When the mother-to-be enters the second and third trimester things change slightly in relation to energy demands. The developing baby puts on weight, which increases its caloric needs –and the mother’s also. It is estimated that an additional 330 to 450 kcal are required during the second and third trimesters respectively. Besides the specific nutrients mentioned above, the diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins and minerals; starchy carbohydrates that have fewer calories but are high in fiber and offer greater satiety without increasing glucose levels too much (oats, quinoa, potatoes, brown rice); and adequate amounts of lean protein (legumes, poultry, beef, eggs). Remember to limit liver though, as it is high in vitamin A which may be toxic in large amounts. An important note: always thoroughly wash raw fruit and vegetables and avoid consuming raw or undercooked fish and meat products. Dairy is important as well, due to the protein and calcium content. Opt for low-fat cheese and yogurt if you are on a caloric budget. For those whom meat is not an option, apart from regulating their protein sources

A TASTE OF

VIENNA Vienna’s December

O

ne resolution I made last December for 2016 was to start showing my followers new destinations, in addition to the usual Dubai and Istanbul (these two cities will always remain my source of inspiration though). Thanks toTravelJunkieDiary.com, a Dubai-based travel website, I’m already realizing that resolution. The founder called and asked if I’d be interested in joining a group of cool travel bloggers on a trip to Vienna, sponsored by Ritz-Carlton. Qatar Airways would fly us (business class) they told me. I didn’t have to think about it for long! I got my Schengen visa and flew to meet them in Doha before continuing to Vienna from there.

During the flight, I wasn’t particularly excited. I thought Vienna would be another Paris or Munich, but smaller. They even speak German there, which I discovered during my long stay in Bavaria a couple of years ago. The food is also almost identical to German cuisine and I tried their famous ‘schnitzel’ in Switzerland when I was studying there. Even the Viennoiseries, the famous pastries named after the city, are done better by the French than by the Austrians themselves. What I was excited about though, was the snow - I LOVE IT! On the way from the airport to the hotel, I was annoying the rest of the group about how beautiful every building was. “OMG! What’s that? Look at this! Oh! Ahh! Wow! What’s that building? I can’t imagine the city in the spring when it’s sunny. Oooo, Aaaa, Weee” etc. for 30 minutes. I could not calm down. The city is simply MAGNIFICENT. The taste of its people is reflected in everything, from the sidewalks to the small shops to the gardens and fountains. It was Paris but much cleaner. Actually, I could think of Vienna as the highest-end ‘Quartier’ of Paris. Another city that I adore and find gorgeous. We arrived at the Ritz-Carlton at the Ringstrassen, the most prestigious avenue in Vienna. As always, the ‘Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen’ mantra was evident, as it is in all other Ritz-Carltons; but the architecture and interior design of the Ritz-Carlton Vienna is what made the difference. It was the right place to marvel at the Austrian capability of preserving historic buildings for modern day use. The hotel is actually four combined buildings that were built in the 19th century in the prestigious boulevard Ringstrasse. The four buildings were used as residential palaces for the nobility at the time and were commercialized throughout the centuries until they became one beautifully crafted and artful Ritz-Carlton. When I walked into my suite, I found a large floor-to-ceiling original painting, I was marveling at it until the lady from Guest Relations slid it across to show me the suite bathroom. It was astonishing to see that they had used it as the bathroom door - which is one way of integrating art into the hotel interior. As much as I was impressed by the city Renaissance and Baroque architecture, I was so looking forward to dinner as usual. Our exciting plan was to go to the Christmas market and have small bites from the huts. We went out wrapped up in our coats and crossed the Ringstrasse into the city’s heart to find the ornamented and glowing markets selling Christmassy goods. As it was so cold, I went to the soup hut first and had Goulash soup served in a bread bowl - the best way to enjoy this AustroHungarian speciality. But that was only the appetizer, as we planned to have dinner at the hotel. We thought it may be boring, but Ritz-Carlton always manage to surprise their guests. They had installed their own Christmas market and mountain chalet restaurant on the hotel’s rooftop, with a 360 degree view of the gorgeous Vienna. If this isn’t the most exclusive Christmas market in town, I don’t know what is! The Austrian cuisine is inspired by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is a mix of German, Swiss, Hungarian and Austrian. Schnitzels, sausages, meat stews, vegetable soups and roasts are always found on menus and on tables. But what is unbeatably delicious in Austria is the desserts. The cakes and the pastries are state-of-the-art! I had one of the best cheesecakes and french toast in my life in Vienna and the smallest and most unassuming pastry shop can stun your sweet-tooth. It was difficult to leave Vienna without thinking I would be coming back - and soon. It is like a painting that changes from one season to another. I could see it in my imagination as both Viennese natives and Vienna fans described the city’s streets during different seasons. Having said that, it is definitely a Christmas haven that combines dark and snowy winter nights with its market lights, music and food. CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:

INTRODUCING ZUCCHINI

W

hen you think of vegetables to use for making baby food, you may not immediately think of zucchini. But there are many advantages to using zucchini,

such as: •It’s extremely versatile •It contains beta-carotene, potassium, folate and Vitamin C •It is NOT considered a common allergen •It is NOT a constipating food •It has a very delicate flavour - you can add it to just about anything without greatly changing the taste

You can introduce zucchini to your baby from 6 months of age, although you should always check with your doctor before introducing any new foods into your baby’s diet. Almost all the nutrients in zucchini are contained in the peel – so we do not recommend peeling zucchini for your baby. Zucchini skin is very tender and seems to puree quite well. And, although you can still see bits of skin in the puree, they are usually so soft that they don’t tend to cause any problems with gagging. The seeds in zucchini are very soft and tender and are easy to puree or mash. Zucchini is similar in shape to the cucumber and can be green, pale green or yellow – usually striped and sometimes speckled. Always look for small zucchini (5 to 6 inches or so) as they are superior to larger ones in both texture and taste. Avoid those that have ‘squashy’ spots, the skin should be glossy and blemish free. You can store them in the refrigerator for around 3 days. Unlike winter squash, zucchini are delicate. Make sure they’re completely dry when you refrigerate them or you may find they begin to develop soft, sunken patches. It is possible to freeze fresh zucchini but beware; because of their high water content, their texture changes completely once frozen. On thawing, they will become decidedly mushy. Not too much of a problem if you’re using them in a stew or soup, but not so appealing if you were planning to serve them alone! One of the best things about zucchini is the ease of preparation. Simply wash thoroughly under running water, cut off both ends, then slice or dice according to the recipe you’re following. It can be boiled (in very little water), sautéed, steamed, microwaved, stuffed or barbecued! You can even grate it and add it to your bread or muffin recipes – it adds moisture and a welcome boost of nutrition.

Raw zucchini makes a nice addition to salads and can be grated or even sliced into sticks. Whilst some older babies may enjoy it as a finger food, the texture may pose a challenge (and therefore a choking hazard) for others. Use your discretion, based on your baby’s development, when offering uncooked zucchini to your baby. To make a basic zucchini puree... Wash the zucchini, remove the top and bottom, then cut it into slices. Steam them for a few minutes, until tender. If you prefer to boil the slices, you need just a little water (because the water content of zucchini is already so high). Cook only to the point where the zucchini becomes tender – overcooking reduces the nutritional value and turns them to mush! Once cooked, transfer the zucchini to a food processor and blend until smooth – you shouldn’t need to add any extra liquid. My way of feeding zucchini to by baby (10 months old):

Sherifa Alasousi Owner of Sugar Box Bakery and winner of ‘Let's Cook’ competition in 2014, Sherifa loves exploring new flavors as well as new places. Having a baby changed her life, particularly when it came to food, but she soon realized that for a healthy baby, you just need to cook with love.

The Recipe: •1 bowl of cooked organic pasta, chopped into small bits •2 sliced small zucchini •1 avocado, turned into paste •1 tsp fresh chives, chopped •olive oil Steam the zucchini for around 3 minutes, until tender. Transfer the zucchini to a food processor and add a little olive oil and avocado paste. Blend until smooth, then stir in the chives. Pour the zucchini over the pasta and (for a little extra flavour) top with a small handful of grated cheese. Always adjust the texture of your baby food according to your baby's age. You can add a little salt but I prefer serving it without. It is also a yummy healthy dinner for adults as well – just add some olives and a little pesto. Bon Appetit! CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

OVERCOMING STRESS!! by: Douglas Leandro & Iman Metwally

D

o you ever wonder why people say ‘My nerves are frayed’, ‘You’re getting on my nerves’ or ‘My nerves can’t handle this’? It’s because stress is linked to your nerves.

The nervous system plays an important role in evaluating and processing stress in the body.

It is a combination of two systems that work together .The peripheral nervous system controls conscious movement, while the central nervous system (which contains the autonomic nervous system) controls those actions in the body that you don't normally regulate through conscious thought, such as digesting and eliminating food, releasing hormones, sweating and regulating blood flow to different muscles and organs. The autonomic nervous system is further split into two branches: Sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). SNS when activated, often as a response to stress, results in the release of stress hormones, increasing your heart rate and blood pressure while decreasing the digestive and repair process. This is known as the ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ response. PNS supports the digestive and repair processes and opposes the effect of SNS.

So what is stress? Stress is your body's way of responding to any kind of demand. It can be caused by both good and bad experiences. When people feel stressed by something going on around them, their bodies react by releasing chemicals into the blood. Stress happens when our body understands that we can't cope with certain situations. These situations can come in different shapes and forms and will trigger physiological responses. These changes are the ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ response as mentioned above. It is triggered by a threatening survival situation; this could be a reaction

to escaping from a wild animal or even saving someone’s life. During the ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ mode, you will experience extra strength to overcome your enemy or to boost your need to flee. It sounds awesome but there’s a trick! What are the responses of our body when we are constantly on a ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ mode and are unable to switch off the magic button? ‘Fight’ or ‘flight’ response will release hormones to help you to survive - making you run faster or fight harder – and drive blood sugar to the muscle system so you can increase power and drive blood flow from the extremities to your core (if you hurt those areas you won't bleed as much). In addition to this, these hormones focus our attention on the threat, so you entire attention is focused on your opponent or target. Our immune system releases natural pain killers to decrease the pain of an injury. This means you become an X-man for couple of seconds or minutes, depending on how long the threatening situation will last. But this amazing body response will drain your energy mentally and physically, so it’s necessary to sit down and wait for your body to auto regulate. With our modern lifestyle, this situation is not likely to happen - we don't go outside to hunt for food and escape from wild animals anymore! Our challenges are way different from those faced by our ancestors; nowadays we fight for parking and try to survive those insane traffic jams! But these non-life-threatening events do not decrease the amount of time we use our super powers. We still use this powerful tool constantly in many different ways from driving our kids to school, shopping for groceries, finding a parking space, receiving e-mails, bossy bosses, divorce, relationships, phone calls, messages and much, much more. So, what was a tool to survive has now become a daily non-stop basic necessity. It’s like we’ve all been running away from a tiger for 24 hours!

How does it affect us? We all know that stress is the ‘silent killer’ but stress is not all bad, it has its good points too! As mentioned above, stress will help you to survive. How can this be bad? Another point is linked to performance; not only physical but mental too. Stress revamps your body due to the chemical action from hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. It will improve your performance for the short term. An example is increasing stress pre-workout which will help you perform better. Of course, everything has a limit. Long term stress mode can start an unexpected chain of actions that you may not even associate with stress. It can lead to degenerating health and, in some extreme cases, can cause Cumulative Stress Disorders and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Other negative results of prolonged exposure to stress include: - Weight gain - Allergies - Asthma - Constipation - Depression - Diabetes Mellitus - Heart Attack - High Blood Pressure - Indigestion - Menstrual issues

How to overcome your stress. Identify your primary stressor: Focus on reducing stress in the area that is causing you the most stress.

Make a plan: Make a realistic plan to address

your biggest stressor and set a series of achievable short-term goals allowing you to clearly recognise progress as it’s made. Another effective method is to find someone who has already been successful at overcoming the challenge you now face. There is no better teacher than experience.

Eat and drink right: Regardless of what your primary stressors may be, if you aren't eating according to your metabolic type you will not be able to effectively replace the stress hormones you are using on a daily basis, which only causes more stress to the body. Once you know your metabolic type, go out of your way to eat as much organic and free range food as possible. The more conventionally farmed food you eat, the more toxins you are consuming. These toxic poisons create a significant stress at a metabolic dysfunction. Dehydration is a common cause of internal stress. A reduction of as little as 1% of water content in your central nervous system can cause significant psychological disorders. Reducing your intake of coffee, tea and soda, plus drinking more high quality water, is an easy way to start reducing the internal stress on your body.

This will help reduce your stress levels by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. "Stress is not a state of mind...it's measurable and dangerous and humans can't seem to find their off-switch. It’s not an abstract concept that we might have a look at someday. We need to do something about it TODAY!" Stress: Portrait of a Killer.

Check out our Full Body Program Phase 2 to help you lose weight!

Move and exercise: Regular exercises, when Goal - Weight Loss

performed correctly for your particular needs, can be a major tool to reduce stress. Exercise in the correct dose stimulates an anabolic environment.

Take the stress questionnaire to identify your score/stress level to ensure you don’t overstress your body while training

Mental exercise: Many successful individuals give credit to the power of positive thinking. Try harmonizing your thoughts, words and actions with your goals and you may find this will help reduce stress. Doing so is a good example of beneficial mental or psychic stress. Make sure you are talking and thinking about what you do want, rather than what you don’t. Another positive approach to reducing stress is to meditate. Find your time in the day to relax, meditate or even do nothing!

Duration - 45 minutes Frequency - 3-4 times per week A1- Split Squats Front Feet Elevated A2- Close Grip LatPull Down B1- Single Leg Lying Leg Curl B2- Inclined Dumbbell Press

Increase your rest period to 60 seconds between super sets. Control the movements. Keep yourself hydrated during the exercises. Use a notebook to record your weights and progression. Work as hard as you can. Add a cardio at the end of your weight session – 15-20 minutes of moderate cardio. Keep following the Program and send us your feedback. Check videos of the exercises on our instagram accounts @imanmetwally or @douglasleandroq8

C1- Thrusters with Plate/Dumbbell C2- Plank Perform each exercise 10-12 repetitions with a slightly heavier weight from the previous Program. Each letter (e.g. A) is a super set with the same letter (perform exercise A1 and A2 without rest).

#F1TURLIFE and stay hydrated! Drink water and lemon to sustain your body alkaline and decrease your body stress. Make sure you don't drink it pre or during workout. CITYPAGESKUWAIT.COM

ust storm season in Kuwait has certainly made us all feel this way. Besides the coughing and tickling in the throat, that persistent sensation of an eyelash stuck in the eye is a feeling we can all relate to. A foreign body or object is something that enters the eye from outside the body. This is commonly referred to as ‘foreign body sensation’. It can be anything from a speck of dust to a metal shard. When a foreign object enters the eye, it will most likely affect the cornea or conjunctiva of the eye. These are the frontal structures of the eye and therefore the most susceptible to scratches and abrasions. Foreign objects can cause irritation to the eye and damage your vision. However, these objects cannot be lost behind the eyeball. Some symptoms that you will probably experience are: •discomfort •a sensation of something irritating the eye •eye pain, especially when looking at light •redness •extreme tearing •the urge to blink excessively Removing a foreign body from the eye needs prompt attention to avoid the onset of infection and further damage to the eyes. Here are some first aid measures to take at home: •Wash you hands thoroughly before attempting to examine your eye or somebody else's eye.

56

MAY, 2016

•If it is a child, the trick is always to keep them calm. •Do not rub or put any undue pressure on the eye. •Try to externally examine the eye in bright light, no matter how uncomfortable this may be. •Remember to move the lower and upper lids to detect the foreign body. •Immerse the affected eye in water, opening and closing the eyes rapidly to flush out the foreign body. Alternatively, getting into the shower will accelerate the process, as there will be a constant stream of water available. •An eye-cup or an eye wash solution, which can be purchased at any pharmacy, does an adequate job to relieve the eyes. •If you are wearing contact lenses, it is best to remove them before or during the irrigation process, as the foreign object could become embedded in the lens. It is important to discard the contact lens to prevent further contamination. •Medical attention needs to be sought if you did not succeed in removing the object using irrigation. •If your vision worsens and blinking and tearing symptoms persist after a prolonged period, post removal, this is another signal to seek medical attention. Please bear in mind that certain leisure and occupational activities may make you more prone to airborne objects or particles. The best defense against this is some kind of protective eyewear. Whether you are working with power tools or chemicals, International Optique provides a wide range of protective eyewear, geared towards your individual needs.

Kuwait Grand Photography Contest 2016

S

ince its inception in 2014, the Kuwait Grand Photography Contest has grown in both quality and scale. What began as a respected competition for photographers in Kuwait, then extended to invite entries from other GCC countries in 2015, until reaching esteemed international status in 2016. This year saw over 20,000 photographs, covering seven inspiring categories, entered into the contest. The quality of the entries was astounding, resulting in a difficult task for the panel of seven independent judges. However, after much deliberation within the jury, the finalists from each category were selected and invited to attend the prestigious prize-giving ceremony in Al Hashemi Grand Ballroom at Radisson Blu Hotel, Kuwait. With 118 countries participating in this year’s contest, it continues to meet the expansion plans of its founder Mr. Jassim Jassim. PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

I

have to admit, I’ve never been the most patient of individuals. I am, however, aware of this flaw in my character and do try to curb it when it rears its ugly head. That said, since moving to Kuwait I’ve realized that what I previously considered as a unique, if unattractive, personality trait, is actually a common blemish amongst an otherwise harmonious society. Try as I might to avoid the subject of Kuwait’s roads, in this instance they are a prime example of impatience at its most apparent. Traffic lights seem to be the catalyst for this restless behaviour, the green light barely illuminating before a blast of horns accompanies the drumming of fingers on steering wheels and twitchy feet on accelerator pedals. Do a few seconds really make that much difference? Many seem to think so, choosing to race through so-called short cuts – over speed bumps and around mini roundabouts – rather than wait at a set of traffic lights. There’s a traffic system in place throughout the world which, when adhered to, actually works rather well. It’s called waiting your turn. Sadly, this particular principle doesn’t appear to have made it to Kuwait. Forming an orderly queue is a safe and fair method of dealing with a number of people all heading in the same direction. So why, at u-turns, do drivers insist upon jumping the queue and forcing their way to the front, not only creating an obstruction but a serious hazard to other

80

MAY, 2016

road users? I have also witnessed cars being driven on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to jump a queue, only then to cause gridlock on the other side of the road and subsequent traffic chaos. But it’s not just roads that induce this anti-social behaviour. The same levels of impatience can be seen in malls, restaurants, cinemas, fuel stations and coffee shops. In fact, the list is endless. Being faced with such extreme levels of impatience on a daily basis is quite an eyeopener. Not only does it hit home how unpleasant it is to witness, it also highlights the associated health issues. Even the most basic cases of impatience can lead to agitation, high blood pressure and unnecessary stress. Is it really worth it? Surely it’s better to take a deep breath, count to ten and remain calm and stress-free. Of course, there are some cases when impatience may be justified. Having to wait because of poor service is a completely different scenario to having to wait in an orderly queue. Feelings of frustration are then understandable but there are still better ways of dealing with them than waved fists and raised voices. The proverbial phrase ‘patience is a virtue’ suggests that a person’s ability to wait for something without getting angry or upset is a valuable and admirable quality. I’m inclined to agree.

ast month saw the loss of another musical legend. The death of Prince came as a shock to the music world and to his many fans across the globe. Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, the flamboyant star will be best remembered for his 1984 album Purple Rain. Often referred to as one of the best albums in music history it was the first Prince album to be recorded with his backing group The Revolution. In addition to the title track, hits from the album included When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy, contributing to its standing as the sixth best selling soundtrack album of all time. Purple Rain also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score in 1985. Prince’s interest in music began early. His first recording contract was secured at the age of 18 and he went on to record 39 studio albums and 4 live albums. He also released over 100 singles and embarked on 38 tours between 1979 and 2015. In 1993, rebelling against contractual disputes with his long-standing record label Warner Bros, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol. This resulted in a stream of critisism from music professionals and fans alike and caused great confusion among TV and radio presenters who were forced to introduce the troubled star as ‘The artist formerly known as Prince’. This was subsequently shortened to ‘The artist’ until he reverted to this original name after signing a new contract with Arista Records. The controversy surrounding his name changes didn’t appear to dent his popularity. After shedding his symbol and re-adopting his original stage name of Prince, he went on to release 15 further albums. His music has been described as everything from rock to pop and from funk to new-wave. He was never afraid to push boundaries and appeared to revel at the prospect of shocking his audience. LA Times writer Randall Roberts described Prince as ‘among the most versatile and restless experimental pop artists of our time’.

In addition to his Academy Award, Prince won a string of other awards including Best International Male at the Brit Awards in 1996 and Best Original Song for The Song of the Heart at the Golden Globes in 2007. He also won 7 Grammy Awards and 4 MTV Video Music Awards. His colourful persona was not just reserved for his onstage performances. Prince’s personal life was often under scrutiny, fuelled by two failed marriages and his allegiance to the Jehovah's Witnesses. This allegiance prevented him from talking about his charitable undertakings but it’s understood he made generous donations to charities close to his heart. In the early 1990s, Prince introduced canes to the frills and furs of his stage costumes. Whilst some believed this was just an elaborate fashion statement, it soon became evident they were a necessity rather than an accessory. As a result of repeated dancing in highheeled boots, the star needed double hip-replacement surgery. However, as a practicing Jehovah’s Witness, he was unwilling to accept blood products and therefore unable to agree to anything other than a blood-less surgery. Consequently, he was rarely seen in public without a cane. Sadly, it was a seemingly innocuous flu-like illness which eventually lead to his death at the age of 57 (although, as is often the case with unexpected celebrity deaths, rumours of a more sinister cause are rife). The news of his passing resulted in shockwaves across the music world. Many U.S. cities lit buildings, bridges and other significant landmarks in purple as a tribute to the talented artist. However you choose to remember him, be it as a singer, songwriter, actor, record producer, musician or film director, Prince was undisputedly one of the bestselling artists of all time. Thankfully, with timeless hits including Raspberry Beret, Diamonds and Pearls and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, his music will undoubtedly live on.

BOOK CLUB ACT LIKE A LADY THINK LIKE A MAN

Y

ou may remember last month, I told you I am not usually in to ‘how to’ books. However, Steve Harvey is an exception to that rule. I purchased this book a few years ago when I was on vacation but only recently got around to reading it. Back then I didn't know Steve Harvey, who he is or what he was about. I had never even heard of his TV show. Much later, I started watching his show and saw his short relationship videos on his facebook channel - I was hooked! This man truly knew what he was talking about, based on his personal experience of divorce and two marriages (the most recent one transforming his life). To tell you a bit about the man himself, Steve Harvey is an American actor, comedian, TV host of his own show 'The Steve Harvey Morning Show' and radio personality. He is a three-time Day Time Emmy Award winner. He also wrote another well known title, Straight Talk, No Chaser: How To Find And Keep A Man (2012). Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man (2009) is written in a way to tell women the truth from the mind of a

true man (Steve Harvey himself). He spills the secrets which a lot of men might not be too happy about! He tells the truth as it is in a very intriguing way explaining what works and what doesn’t work. It is a book that describes what men really think about love, relationships, commitment and intimacy, which gives us ladies a chance to maneuver way easier around relationships. The book was adapted into a motion picture titled Think Like A Man (2012) and then later Think Like A Man Too (2014) starring funny comedian Kevin Hart. Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man (2009) is funny, witty, sarcastic and straight to the point. You will enjoy it for sure and what is more entertaining is that you will start hearing Steve’s voice in your head which makes it all the more real. “But remember what drives a man; real men do what they have to do to make sure their people are taken care of, clothed, housed, and reasonably satisfied, and if they're doing anything less than that, they're not men.” Steve Harvey.

Reports and Rumours: Ultra-Thin MacBook Coming Later This Year. It`s been almost a year since the MacBook lineup got an upgrade and the rumours are saying there is an ultra-thin model due later this year. The new MacBook might replace the MacBook Air for good. The new MacBooks will not be available until the second half of this year, although an announcement at WWDC still seems possible if Apple meet the earlier side of that release range. The new ultra-thin MacBooks will apparently feature a new hinge design, created by metal injection molding. According to the report, this specialized process is a requirement for Apple to achieve its slim goals. Other reports have suggested that the new MacBooks will have a major change in connectivity ports. Not as drastic as the one-port Retina MacBook, it is rumoured that the new MacBook will only feature USB-C ports on both sides. This is what the reports and rumours say that are out there so far; we will have to wait until WWDC 2016.

Security Breach: Shortened URL Is Now A Threat. We love security researchers. The security researchers have discovered that short URLs are able to be brute-forced, potentially exposing personal data to anyone motivated to look. The issue was found by Martin Georgiev and Vitaly Shmatikov after looking at the abbreviated web addresses used by companies like Google, Microsoft and bit.ly. The standard Google Maps URL, for instance, takes up around 150 characters but for ease of use, the product offered a six-character alternative. But a combination of six-characters is small enough that it's possible to break simply with trial and error, exposing your cloud storage files and mapping requests to the world. Some of those files were tied to folders that had write-access, enabling anyone in the world to drop malicious code into your cloud storage. The duo said "automatically generated short URLs are a terrible idea for cloud services. Each resource shared via short URL is thus effectively public and can be accessed by anyone anywhere in the world.

Apple`s Recycle Program Update: 89 Million Pound Of Materials, $40 Million Worth Of Gold. Apple has been working hard on keeping our planet clean and so far it's doing a really great job, according to their latest announcement in March. So far they have revealed that their recycling program last year recovered 89 million pounds of materials noting that this included $40M worth of gold! The average smartphone contains around 30mg of gold. Gold is commonly used in circuit boards because it has low electrical resistance and, unlike copper, doesn’t corrode. In most applications, a thin layer of gold covers a thicker layer of copper. $6 million worth of copper was also recycled along with silver, nickel, aluminum, steel, lead, zinc, tin, cobalt, glass and plastics.

New 'e-skin' tech turns your body into a walking display. A new breakthrough could help pave the way to our transhuman future as cyborgs. Researchers in Japan have developed a super thin and flexible protective film that can be used to create electronic skin (e-skin) displays. Why put a display on your body? The most obvious applications could be for health and training, with simple displays that adhere to a hand or arm and connect to wearable sensors to show measurements like heart rate or blood oxygen level right on the surface of your skin.

INTERVIEW WITH STAR FASHION BLOGGER

for Calzedonia

Describe your career as a blogger in 5 essential milestones: l2009: I founded theblondesalad.com, received my first invitations to fashion shows and was offered projects from a few brands. l2011: The TBS crew was launched and so began the adventures with my team. We also received the first international awards. l2013: theblondesalad.com evolved into an online magazine and our social media strategy changed; our Instagram profile reached millions of followers. l2014: The first magazine covers, increasing to 27 covers the following year, including the first Vogue cover. l2015: The Harvard business case; a Forbes nomination, as the only Italian woman in the 30 under 30. Can you tell us about the day you decided to start your blog? It was really a decision that came about after a lot of consideration. I had already been posting in various online communities for years and had lots of followers. Then Richi gave me a final, encouraging push by buying the domain while he was in Chicago! It all began from there. The look you’ll never forget and why: The one for my first red carpet appearance in Cannes, wearing Alberta Ferretti. It was intensely emotional and unforgettable. You’ve transformed your passion into

a job as well as a new profession. Can you tell us about the moment when this became clear? At the start nothing was definite; it wasn’t even what I set out to do. Then the first offers began arriving and I understood that this could be a source of income. But from the start I’ve put passion first and foremost and I’ve always been uncompromising on which work offers I accept. I’ve always dictated my own rules. What do you remember about your first fashion show? It was surreal and so different live, compared to the videos I had watched beforehand. In any case, it was thrilling, a dream come true. A childhood memory connected to fashion: As a teenager, when I began wanting the handbags that my mother carried. I’m thinking about her Chanel handbags, or her Louis Vuittons. Now that I think of it, I’ve always been tempted by accessories. Hosiery: 5 adjectives to define it: Comfortable, quality, sexy, trendy, amazing. Is hosiery essential for a nude look? I see it more as a way to complement other looks, but why not the nude look as well?! Your iconic hosiery: Fishnets.

The hosiery that you would never have imagined yourself wearing: Polka-dots! The perfect hosiery for every type of shoe - what do you recommend? Sheer stockings. When can hosiery make all the difference? Often. I think it immediately adds character to a look and gives it an entirely different style. A film with an iconic scene where a character is wearing hosiery - what comes to mind? Any film with Sofia Loren. 3 adjectives you’d use to describe Calzedonia: Italian-style, iconic, trendy. I have chosen 3 exceptional looks from the Spring/Summer 2016 collection and featured them as this season’s favourites. As an Italian fashion icon, how much do you like to maintain a connection to your ‘Italian-ness’ - how much does being Italian come over in your looks? I feel my style is definitely Italian. Even if it’s influenced by international inspiration, I feel - and always will feel – Italian. And I’m proud of it!

BLUE ATMOSPHERE This season, designers have proven wrong that the colour blue has negative connotations when it comes to our mood. In fact, blue will give us a completely peaceful and elegant look, that will surely make us happy. This spring we have been introduced to an assortment of different designs in all kinds of heavenly blues - hydrangea, smoky, powder, baby blue, dusty blue and the super bright snorkel blue - that promise to give a serene feel to any lady’s outfit. Hydrangea blue was one of the main colours at the Spring 2016 Airline themed show by Chanel.

Burgan Bank Announces Sponsorship of Mass communication students of Kuwait University Trip to the USA

RESERVED Hosts A Runway Competition in Celebration of Style

Eucerin® DermoCapillaire: Healthy Hair Starts with a Healthy Scalp!

The new scalp and hair care range is formulated to specifically address the needs of a problematic scalp – to restore the healthy balance of the scalp and hair from root to tip. Our hair is our calling card and it says a lot about who we are. In a survey to establish a ranking list of factors that contribute to the first impression people have of us , 58 percent of respondents put hair in second place – after the face (66 percent) and ahead of the figure (55 percent) and clothing (52 percent). It only takes us a matter of seconds to assess a person’s assumed lifestyle, attractiveness and physical fitness on the basis of their hair. The most important assessment criterion isn’t hair style, but hair health – and that depends to a great extent on the condition of the scalp. “Based on our many years of experience in dermatological skin care, we have expanded our research horizon to include the scalp and its significance for hair structure, “said Stefanie Conzelmann, Head of Product Development Dermo Cosmetics, Beiersdorf AG, summarizing the result as follows: “The condition of the scalp affects the division of the matrix cells in the follicles which are responsible for hair growth. Optimal hair condition depends on optimum matrix cell division.” In other words, beautiful hair needs a healthy basic structure that Eucerin® DermoCapillaire products can support. The active ingredient in the new scalp & hair care range gets right to the root of the most common problems and restores the healthy balance of the scalp – for healthy looking hair from root to tip.

This year’s collection displayed a fusion of colour and lines that could well be considered the stars of the new season at the Massimo Dutti store in Marina mall. Welcoming the 2016 Spring Summer collection through an entertaining evening with its experienced staff and ambient music, were Massimo Dutti Kuwait’s loyal VIP customers, media personnel and trendy influencers, who were also presented with gift vouchers to shop at their favourite store while being familiarised with this year’s finest attires that overflow with their own style and brimming with expressiveness for all age groups. Setting the trends every season, the line ranges from olive greens to the khaki and petroleum blues of the Industry collection, right through to the arabesque airs and reddish tones of the Asilah Collection followed by the Ikat motifs, prints and earthy colours that make up the small Atlas Collection. The refreshing Saint Malo Collection, brings out the cold blues with greys in which the shirts highlight the beginnings of a well-worked part of the Dutti tailoring craft. Earthy shades, indigos and beiges recalls the wondrous decade of the fifties in Cuba, country that holds the starring role in the entire Spring Summer Dutti Collection for men. The B&G Collection is represented by colours such as yellows, greys and the novelty of black tones for the girl’s collection whereas in the boy’s collection we have to underscore the denim shirts and light-weight feather parkas as essential accessories for casual and laid-back looks. The 2016 Spring Summer collection can be viewed exclusively at its stores in Marina mall and The Avenues mall.

Al Rifai has recently launched a store-wide campaign aimed towards raising awareness about healthy eating habits and the benefits of including nuts, seeds and dried fruits as part of a balanced diet. Recent studies and research have indicated that regular consumption of nuts reduces risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer in addition to aiding in weight loss and improving blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes. Nuts are nutritional powerhouses that contain a wide variety of essential vitamins and minerals, which include Vitamin E, Vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, protein and fiber, which are rich in antioxidant properties. Dried fruits are also an integral part of a healthy diet as they contain the same amount of fiber as fresh fruits and are a good source of dietary fiber, potassium and phenolic compounds, which are linked to a number of health benefits, including decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer. Until end of May, customers who visit Al Rifai outlets in the country will be indoctrinated into understanding the benefits and nutritional facts of the various types of nuts and dried fruits at the participating outlets through display tips, guides and by speaking to the knowledgeable staff at the store. Al Rifai strongly believe that they have a role to play in educating consumers about the importance of healthy snacking and the importance of incorporating nuts into their daily eating habits. Their premium quality products are not only delicious but also have different nutritional values that offer various health benefits. Through this campaign, Al Rifai aims to share the knowledge of healthy eating habits by creating a store experience that will guide consumers in choosing the perfect nut, dried fruit or seed that will suit their daily needs. One of the popular healthy nuts at Al Rifai are walnuts which are a rich source of monounsaturated fats that are perfect in lowering the risk of heart disease and is also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are also rich in all the B-vitamins, which support the immune system in addition to helping one maintain their ideal weight. Sunflower seeds on the other hand are a rich source of protein, dietary minerals and all the B-vitamins, which are able to aid in lowering blood cholesterol levels.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

The middle of the month will be a tense time for relationships with sudden arguments and fall outs. Your partner may complain that you are too controlling and that he/she wants some time alone. You are best giving your loved one some space, do not force the issue. You are very resourceful in May 2016 and able to come up with solutions to problems. With a great deal of mental energy, you will accomplish much. As a whole, you may not be very focused and you may lack direction – you will tend to do things as they crop up rather than creating the initiative. This is an ideal time to tie up the little details and create more organisation within your work environment.

TAURUS

(April 20 - May 20)

n relationships, you will not like to be put on the spot or coerced into making decisions you are not ready for. You can be rather evasive in May 2016 and will strongly resist being bossed around or controlled. You are looking for growth and evolvement within the relationship, and where your partner is too set in his ways or too staid in his approach there will be problems. You are in a very outgoing phase of life where you welcome novelty; if your partner is happy to embrace this, then all the better for your relationship. If your partner is agro to your freedom loving, adventure seeking bent then you will drift apart (not necessarily permanently) in May 2016. You are impatient with routine and with pettiness; you want to reject all those trivial aspects of day-today life and see a bigger, more promising picture.

GEMINI

(May 21 - June 20)

If your partner is not feeling as energetic as you, you may need to spend time apart. Geminis are restless and need to burn off excess energy. You are finding it hard to sit still and relax, and you need to be busy or entertained constantly. If your partner is also a mutable sign, this could be an exciting month where you try new things, travel and socialize together. You are in a jocular mood and ready for friendly debate – be sure that others do not take you too seriously and take offence. You can be quick to talk and might be prone to talking out of turn or gossiping – do be careful that what you say does not come back to hurt you or someone you love.

CANCER

(June 21 - July 22)

Love and harmony are very important to you and you will go the extra mile to ensure that things run smoothly in all your relationships. You should be careful not to give too much ground, as often if you are too accommodating people can take advantage. Be fair, but you must still be firm, do not be a soft touch. Goodwill and a forgiving attitude ensure that you spread happiness – you are not in the mood to hold grudges, you will set your own pride aside in the interests of harmony and peace. Diplomacy is very important right now; it is what you say and how you say it. Do not be blunt and be as inclusive as you can when you are busy with teamwork; do not leave anyone out of the loop.

MAY, 2016

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

You are very loving and caring, and yet you are spreading that care around and so your partner may feel neglected. You cannot be all things to all people at the same time, and emotionally you are feeling quite stretched right now, as if you do not have either the time or the energy to give enough love to everyone. Communication is the answer, do not neglect to tell your partner that you feel a little pressured right now and will give him/her your full attention as soon as you are able – most people will understand and respond to this. Keenly interested in communications, networking and how to use IT to gain an advantage, you are on the hunt for new ideas in May 2016.

VIRGO

(August 23 - September 22)

May 2016 is great to get involved socially together, either with friends or doing something you both find enjoyable and fulfilling. Single Virgo will seek a new partner who is an intellectual and social equal – which is why meeting new potential lovers via your friends or interest groups is the best way to find a good match right now. An excellent month for Virgos, who work with their hands for either healing i.e. physio or chiropracting or perhaps something like jewelry making or crafting. Another feature in May 2016 is putting in the hours, not for any direct benefit, but because you have the belief in what you are doing. Belief is a strong driver for your actions in May 2016, both at home and work. You may also stick up for the underdog or give a voice to someone who has none.

LIBRA

(September 23 - October 22)

Those you work with may find you rather snappy and irritable in May 2016. You have little patience with others, and this is not a great month for teachers, lawyers, instructors or anyone who has to explain detailed concepts to others, as you are simply not focused and may omit details. If you drive for a living, be extra careful in May 2016 and leave more time on all journeys. Likewise, business trips may be beset with delays and aggravations, and may not achieve everything you hoped for. The best way to deal with the month is to get everything organized at the start of May, and so if you are rushed and stressed as the month wears on, you can fall back on the work you did early on.

SCORPIO

(October 23 - November 21)

Emotions can run high in May 2016, and it may not be easy for you to see his/her point of view – you may be accused of not being sensitive enough. It is likely that you will say something that seems obvious to you, but is perceived as being very hurtful to the other person. It is a very effective month for those in politics or speech writing where mass communication of ideas and the ability to rouse an audience is important – you have the power to use words to manipulate and engender a response. Scorpio bankers, stockbrokers, investors and those who handle others’ money must be very cautious in May 2016 – do not take risks.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)

This is a good month for love as you are self-assured and confident, and thus able to express yourself and your needs in a positive way. A very good time to be pioneering and to do something totally different – this may be a new role at work, a new way to advertise your business or market yourself. You may also try a new software that can speed up your work or a new technique. You are very enterprising and ready to seize opportunities; if you are interviewing for new jobs, then this is a wonderful time as you are coming across as confident and capable and can give a good account of yourself. In work, good fences make good neighbours – know your boundaries and make sure others know theirs.

CAPRICORN

(December 22 - January 19)

One-to-one relationships are important to you in May 2016, and you will prefer to spend time alone with your partner or spouse rather than socializing with friends – you are not in the mood for hubbub or bickering, you just want a peaceful, harmonious atmosphere. You may just agree or go along with things being as flexible as you can to ensure you get the sense of tranquility you require. If your partner is hell-bent on arguing, you are best avoiding him/her and going off quietly by yourself to think. Nothing can be achieved by arguing or even debating right now as you may complicate things unnecessarily. In financial matters and also if you work in fields like building, architecture, components, surveying, building products of high specification etc., do not cut corners and do be patient, things cannot be rushed right now.

AQUARIUS

(January 20 - February 18)

Relationships can be tricky in May 2016 as you are giving mixed signals – you are saying one thing, but you are projecting something different and your loved one or those close to you may be reacting to what you are projecting rather than what you are saying and that can add to your confusion. We all underestimate the amount of animal intuition we use to interpret the actions of others, especially those close to us. Sometimes we are almost unaware that we are picking up vibes or giving them out – in May 2016 you are giving out some rather intense vibes without realizing it, and you can be conveying a certain hostility, even if you are saying something positive. Business travel may be spur of the moment and so make sure that you are not over-committed in May 2016 – you want to leave yourself free to take up sudden opportunities that can arise.

PISCES

(February 19 - March 20)

Relationships are intense in May 2016 whether they are new or established, and there can be a subtle battled of wills. You may not actually argue, but something is simmering below the surface, and it may be hard for you to broach the issue as you may think that perhaps you are imagining something. May is a highly productive month in any career where a sense of timing is important, or where your ability to empathize or understand a client is essential. You are operating at a highly psychic level, and although it may not be straightforward to interpret to signs you are getting, with a little logic added on you will find that you can come up with amazing solutions. This ability can be especially helpful in careers where you diagnose or where you use your hands to help people to make physical recoveries, i.e. physiotherapist, occupational therapy, chiropractors, osteopaths, etc.
