Dear Readers… Dhari Al-Muhareb Editor-in-Chief

This issue is very special to us in many ways. Firstly, we support the Breast Cancer awareness month and for this we bring you an exclusive interview with Madame Laila A. T. Alghanim – the president of Hayatt Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and more alarmingly the number of young women being affected by the disease is increasing. Even more worrying is that medical experts in Kuwait still find that women are slow to visit their doctor. In as many as 30 per cent of cases, breast cancer is detected in women in the third stage of the disease.

It’s up to you to prioritize your own health not just for yourselves but for those who love and need you, so please carry out a monthly self-examination and visit your doctor if you notice something unusual. It could mean the difference between life or death.

Photography Team

This issue is also important as we have new people who have joined our execution team. Abeer AlAbduljalil and Kinda AlFaris. Both of them are wonderful people with several years of experience. They will certainly add a new dimension to CityPages’s growth and exposure.

Natalia Sitcai Shahbaz Hussain Abdulaziz AlSuraya Sami Musa

Our editorial team is also growing. And yes, we now have our very own in-house Fashion Editor. Noor AlKhuraibet needs no introduction. She is simply the best Kuwait can have and we are proud of having her as part of our family.

REDUCE WASTE

Pass me along to a friend or recycle me after reading The month of October October is the tenth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with a length of 31 days. October retained its name (from the Latin "octo" meaning "eight") after January and February were inserted into the calendar that had originally been created by the Romans. October is commonly associated with the season of autumn in the Northern hemisphere and spring in the Southern hemisphere, where it is the seasonal equivalent to April in the Northern hemisphere and vice versa. In common years January starts on the same day of the week as October, but no other month starts on the same day of the week as October in leap years. October ends on the same day of the week as February every year and January in common years only.

 October's birthstones are pink tourmaline and opal  Its birth flower is the calendula  The Zodiac sign for October are Libra (until October 22) or Scorpio (October 23 onwards).

There is so much to see, cover and enjoy this month, while our next issues will be even more jam packed with articles, and exciting coverage of people, places and things. I’m also excited to be introducing a new column starting next month entitled In the Living Room Lounge, where I’ll be sitting down with various persons of interest to discuss their contribution to society, their accomplishments, interests and dreams in the hopes of encouraging our readers to follow suit. I dedicate my first letter to all women this October, breast cancer awareness month and urge all of you to take action in taking charge of your own health and wellbeing by getting screened; for early detection is the best prevention. INTERVIEW

Hayatt’s Heart of Gold Laila A. T. Alghanim, as the President of the Hayatt Foundation has bought hope at a time when cancer patients sink into despair. Continuing the legacy of altruism and compassion started by her mother through the foundation, her management ensures many patients are given a new lease on life. Furthermore, she is seated on the board of charity association for Yemen. She earned a diploma in Business at Stroud Court College, United Kingdom before moving forward to join the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its Protocol Department. Then, became the head of the women's branch in the Commercial Bank of Kuwait and a board member in the Arab business women association. CityPages highlights National Breast Cancer Awareness month by talking to a significant person who has contributed ardently toward the cause. Who is the founder of Hayatt foundation? The Hayatt Foundation was founded by my mother Mrs. Ruqayah Abdulwahab Alqatami (Oum Qais Abdullah Thaunayyn Alghanim).

How did the concept of Hayatt foundation start? The concept of "Hayatt" dates back to 2003 when its founder Mrs. Ruqayah Abdulwahab Alqatami (Oum Qais Abdullah Thaunayyn Alghanim) was already involved in charitable work for several years providing medicine and other assistance to patients. After living through the ordeal of witnessing her own grandson receive his cancer treatment outside his home country, Oum Qais decided to make a difference in the lives of expatriates with cancer living in Kuwait. Her family, relatives and friends joined her mission in convincing her that she could make a true difference with her humanitarian work.

When was the Hayatt foundation officially launched? Hayatt was founded to be part of the "Ruqayah Abdulwahab Alqatami Charity Foundation" and was officially recognized by the Ministry of Social Affairs in 2008.

How many patients have been sponsored since the inception of Hayatt foundation? Since Ramadan September 2007, it is through our determination that in a relatively short period our foundation, formerly known as "Hayat4Cancer", was set up. We sponsored the treatment of hundreds of patients from 26 different nationalities (Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Soudan, Yemen, Bulgaria, Canada, Iran, Lebanon, India, Morocco, Philippines, Sri-Lanka, Iraq, Bangladesh, United States of America, China, Australia, Russia , Nepal and non- Kuwaitis (Bedouns) who were suffering from various cancers including breast cancer, lymphoma, colon cancer, leukemia, multiple myeloma, stomach cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer and brain cancer at a cost of millions of Kuwaiti Dinars.

Where does the treatment take place? Hayatt provides mental and moral support to people with cancer who live in Kuwait. Specifically, our association provides expensive chemotherapy and other support services at no cost to local and expatriate cancer patients treated in Kuwait at the National Cancer Treatment Center.

What is the total amount of this sponsorship? The total amount of sponsorship is over KD 3 million. 14 www.citypageskuwait.com

Is the sponsorship for Kuwaiti patients only? No, this is open for all the nationalities. The only condition is that the patient should have a valid Kuwait’s residency and he should be recommended by the Government Hospital.

How and where do you get your funding from? We get our funding from donors and also by arranging Gala dinner every year which really helps the cause.

Who are some of your sponsors? This year Al Wataniya Telecom is the main sponsor of our Gala Dinner and donated KD 25000 which was a sufficient amount for one patient. Besides, they have provided great support in other forms.

Do you support every patient that comes to you or do you have a selective criterion? Yes, we support every patient who comes to us. But we can only provide therapy for people who have recently been affected rather than patients that have passed the stage of therapy and cannot be cured with medicine.

Every year you organize a fund raising gala, how effective is this event and what are your plans for this year? This is a very popular event every year and it helps us a lot in our fund raising campaign. The popularity can be measured in the sense that it is a fully sold out event every year. We usually invite internationally acclaimed classic Arabic singers to perform. This year we have invited the popular singer Waad AlBahri.

What are your future plans for Hayatt foundation? We are promoting the early screening of breast cancer and in this regard, we have collaborated with Yarmouk clinic. They have dedicated a room solely for this purpose. The machinery has been installed and we are only waiting for the Radiologist to arrive so that this setup can be made operational.

Your message for our readers? Spread awareness about breast cancer and encourage people to do early screening, which will be really effective in fighting against this disease.

Your message for our team at CityPages magazine? Thank you very much for your support regarding this important matter. I really appreciate your efforts in interviewing me which will help people to understand more about this program and spread Breast Cancer Awarness.

Positive thoughts can improve your immunity and boot breast cancer This powerful saying gets me through even the toughest of times, and perhaps it would be most appropriate to internalise in times of trauma, illness and challenges. “No matter where you go or what you do, you live your entire life within the confines of your head” – Terry Josephson.

Here are some ways we can work through this to reach that point of acceptance, positivity and transformation.

Meaning that if you are able to work your mind towards positive thoughts, half or more of your battle would be won, and the battle itself would not seem as huge had you not thought about it in a positive manner.

1. Being completely conscious of your thoughts Robin Sharma, in his book writes about seeing the mind as a garden, a garden that needs to be nurtured and cultivated with positive thoughts in order for the garden to flourish. This garden needs to be weeded out of every single negative thought, preventing it from entering the garden- a technique known as thought stopping.

Although I feel out of my depth to even consider writing this piece, I hope that it may provide a shimmer of hope, solace and even an alternative view during breast cancer awareness month. As I write this piece, a dear friend and sister of mine is fighting for her life as the illness has ridden her entire body, but her perseverance and desire to overcome it is truly admirable. As a young girl I read the book “Quantum Healing” by Deepak Chopra. Prior to this, I always saw words like CANCER as scary words, carrying weighty, deep and painful messages. This however changed for me when I read his book. Although I am blessed so far with health that has not challenged me beyond anything too serious, I hope that I would be able to find the positive meaning in it and embrace it by using my mind to overcome even the scariest of illnesses. I cannot remember all the details of the scenario that Deepak Chopra wrote about, but it was about a women who had exhausted all avenues of conventional treatment for her cancer, she had gone through radium, medication, surgery, everything that was medically possible but the tumours had still appeared in the scans. When she attended Chopra’s clinic, she was to follow an alternate treatment plan, based on the ancient ayurvedic system and had to do a lot of positive mind work simultaneously. She did this through visualisations, relaxations and meditation. After a period of time the healing began and significantly took over her ravaged body. The scans clearly showed that the tumour was no longer present in her body, a phenomenon impossible for many to comprehend, but one that took place largely because of the thoughts she allowed to enter her mind. A field called psychoneuroimmunology shows how this occurs when positive thoughts elevate immunity in ones body, and this in turn kick starts the body into healing. I am aware that for people who have been down this path or who are currently journeying along it, this may be frustrating to comprehend and accept. It would be difficult to turn a blind eye to the obvious signs that are present and pretend they do not exist. The key is not to be pretentious at all, it is about accepting the reality of the illness, and within this still finding ways to keep abreast, to remain focussed and positive. A powerful site that I stumbled upon provides much inspiration and hope to breast cancer victors, here is a beautiful poem that is written by someone who has walked this path. In love and health, I salute you and trust that the journey you are on will bring you more blessings than pain, and enough joy to over shadow your illness. 16 www.citypageskuwait.com

2. Gratitude: being thankful and appreciative for the little things in life. Learning to appreciate even the most insignificant blessings life has to offer, whether it is an insect on a flower, a ray of sunshine, the aroma of wholesome food, the value of a hug, or the morning breeze that cools you down. Even during times of illness the body is still working in miraculous ways. Imagine if a minor technical error occurs in the body, such as not being able to do something as simple as blink ones eyes, or the inability to bend ones joints. Imagine if a simple process of peristalsis, swallowing was not fully functional? We would feel major discomfort. These are the little miracles that life has to offer at any given time. Look for them. 3. Jot down your thoughts. Journaling is a great way to internalise, reaffirm and entrench the things we can be grateful for, the positives in even the darkest spaces and this process will assist one in moving beyond our capacities into a realm of unlimited possibilities and wonders. 4. Align yourself with people who make you shine In times of distress we need people who are going to support us, make us smile, push us up as we are about to cave in, and people who will hold us when the goings get tough. Like the garden of our minds, we need to weed out negative people, people who bring us down, and are unable to see beyond the very bleak. 5. Know your triggers. Become aware of the moments that trigger you into a downward spiral, as these moments would certainly occur. Recognise them so that as the trigger occurs you are fully aware of it, feel but without dwelling on it too long. An NLP practitioner would be able to help you counter this trigger with another trigger that makes you feel better again, alternatively have someone that you can call on and who would be there to see you through this stormy patch.

The Road

from Stress to Bliss Stress in everyone’s life is normal to an extent. How we deal with our stress, the way we manage it and our attitude regarding stress is what makes a difference. If you are reading this article to discover the magic spell that I am about to bestow on you to combat stress then STOP NOW! Unfortunately, to this day, no one has been able to discover a magic pill or a magic potion that will make our stress POOF and disappear. That sounds grim, doesn't it? Well thankfully that's now what I’m about. So lets look at the positive side of all of this, shall we? On a more positive note, turns out, that YOU actually have that secret that will help you to manage and combat stress! Now lets get to the good stuff. So what does it take to combat stress and lead a blissful life? One thing to remember is that we are all different, we have different families and different situations and so what may work for one might not work for another. But I will tell you that the first thing you need to do to lead a less stressful life is to reframe your mind. Life will throw all sorts of things at you, it will test you and try you at times, but if you are functioning from a place of strength and contentment, you will be able to come out of life’s many experiences stronger and not so frazzled.

of humor, accept that change is a part of life, and believe in a higher power or purpose. There are many other things that can help, but to me this would be my number 1. If you were going to take just one thing from reading this article then let it be this. Other factors that can affect your stress control and management and ways that you can feel less stressed are:

1. Your support network A strong network of supportive friends and family What is this thing we call stress? Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger – whether it’s real or imagined – the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction, or the stress response.

members is an enormous buffer against life’s stressors. On the flip side, the more lonely and isolated you are, the greater your vulnerability to stress.

2. Your sense of control If you have confidence in yourself and your ability to

influence events and persevere through challenges, it’s easier to take stress in stride. People who are vulnerable to stress tend to feel like things are out of their control.

The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.

3. Your ability to deal with your emotions You’re extremely vulnerable to stress if you don’t know how to calm and soothe yourself when you’re feeling sad, angry, or afraid. The ability to bring your emotions into balance helps you bounce back from adversity.

The stress response also helps you rise to meet challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration at an important game or event, or drives you to study for an exam when you'd rather be watching TV.

4. Your knowledge and preparation The more you know about a stressful

But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life. So, how can we control our stress instead of having our stress control us? One of the common denominators between people who can and know how to manage stress in their lives is their attitude and outlook on life– Stress-hardy people have an optimistic attitude. They tend to embrace challenges, have a strong sense 18 www.citypageskuwait.com

situation, including how long it will last and what to expect, the easier it is to cope. For example, if you go into surgery with a realistic picture of what to expect postop, a painful recovery will be less traumatic than if you were expecting to bounce back immediately.

Now that you know what it takes to manage stress, I will introduce to you 15 ways that will help you combat stress.

1. Learn how to manage stress. You may feel like the stress in your life is out of your control, but you can always control the way you respond. Managing stress is all about taking charge: taking charge of your thoughts, your emotions,

SELF DEVELOPMENT your schedule, your environment, and the way you deal with problems. Stress management involves changing the stressful situation when you can, changing your reaction when you can’t, taking care of yourself, and making time for rest and relaxation. Don’t feel guilty about giving your self a Mommy (or Daddy) time out. Trust me, those 15-30 minutes to your self a day will make you a better parent. Sometimes you might feel pressured to do something you don’t have time or don’t want to do. Don’t feel guilty about saying NO in these situations.

2. Try to relax. I know this might be hard for some people but this is an important point in managing stress. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing, are all ways that allow your body to enter a state of restfulness which is the opposite of where you are when you are stressed and anxious. 3. Let go of perfectionism. I know some of you may be shaking your heads and not agreeing with this, but letting go of perfectionism doesn’t mean living in a pigpen, never doing chores or giving up. What it means is accepting that good enough is good enough and identifying your pressure points so that you can take care of the basics and let go of the things that don’t matter as much. 4. Identify stressors. This is the most important

step of all, as identifying the things that stress you out in your life is the first step towards eliminating them. Take 10 minutes to think about what stresses you out during the day. What weekly occurrences stress you out? What people, activities, things cause stress in your life? Make a Top 10 list, and see which of them can be eliminated, and start to weed them out. For those that can’t be eliminated, find ways to make them less stressful. By carefully editing your life, and changing certain habits, you can eliminate most (not all) sources of stress in your life.

5. Eliminate unnecessary commitments. We all have many commitments in our life, starting with work but also including commitments related to kids, our spouses, things to do at home, other family, civic,

side work, religious, hobbies, online activities and more. Consider each of them, the amount of stress they provide, and the value you get out of them. Edit brutally, and take steps today to remove the ones that stress you out the most.

6. Eliminate energy drains. If you’ve analyzed

work to make the lives of others better.

11. Eat healthy. This goes hand-in-hand with exercise as a stress prevention method, of course. Become healthier and a major source of stress will disappear.

12. Embark on something relaxing and creative: Squeeze out those creative juices and try

your life and found things that stress you out, you might have also noticed things that drain your energy. Certain things in our life just cause us to be more exhausted than others, with less value. Identify them, and cut them out. You’ll have much more energy and much less stress. Happiness ensues.

to learn something new. It can be as simple as scrap booking or if you have the talent, you can try painting or even photography. These activities will give way for your mind to relax.

7. Controlling. We are not the Master of this Universe.

13. Be grateful. This might not be as obvious as

I know we sometimes wish we were, but acting as if we are is a sure way to get stressed out. Trying to control situations and people cannot work, and only serves to increase our anxiety when it doesn’t work. Learn to let go, and accept the way that other people do things, and accept what happens in different situations. The only thing you can control is yourself - work on that before you consider trying to control the world. Also learn to separate yourself from tasks and to delegate them. Learning to let go of our need to control others and the situations around us is a major step towards eliminating stress.

8.Simplify life. Simplify your routines, your commitments, your information intake, your cluttered rooms, the mass of stuff going on in your life and have less stress as a result. 9. Slow down. Instead of rushing through life, learn to take things slow. Enjoy your food, enjoy the people around you, enjoy nature. This step alone can save tons of stress. 10. Help others. It may sound contradictory to add

more tasks to your life by trying to help other people (you’ve got enough to do), but if you were to add anything to your life, this should be it. Helping others, whether volunteering for a charity organization or just making an effort to be compassionate towards people you meet, not only gives you a very good feeling, it somehow lowers your stress level. Of course, this doesn’t work if you try to control others, or help others in a very rushed and frenetic way — learn to take it easy, enjoy yourself, and let things happen, as you

some of the others, but developing an attitude of gratitude is a way of thinking positive, eliminating negative thinking from your life, and thereby reducing stress. Learn to be grateful for what you have, for the people in your life, and see it as a gift. With this sort of outlook on life, stress will go down and happiness will go up. That’s a winning formula.

14. Celebrate small achievements. This is one of my favorites and I actually use it in all my coaching sessions. Celebrate your wins no matter how small they are. Give yourself a pat on the back once in a while you deserve it. 15. Live by the day. Worrying about what happened in the past and what you have to do in the future is a stressful way to live your life. Instead, take one thing at a time and focus your energy on what is happening now. Although it is always good to set goals for yourself but you have to work on it one step at a time. It’s a lot easier than to take giant leaps. Give yourself some time to breathe and try not to push yourself too hard. The Dalai Lama was once asked what surprised him the most in humanity and he answered: “Man! He sacrifices his health in order to make money, then sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived” Now that you have all this information, I hope you will start to implement it in your life and start on your own road from stress to bliss!

INSIGHT

Mad Woman and the National Bird It is finally getting somewhat cooler in Kuwait – goodbye to the hot burning summer and endless sunshine; we say welcome to the pleasant times for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging, swimming, camping, gathering, grilling, eating and more. The most exciting for me though is the camping season and I am sure that everybody is hungry for some traditional desert camping and is looking forward to it. There is nothing more intriguing as to spend couple of days or weeks out in the desert, feel the raw nature, sand, and simplicity of life while outside of the tent and still have the luxury of escaping back into civilization when stepping into the tent that is - depending of the package purchased - more or less filled with all the comforts that Kuwait has to offer. Whether it is a simple comfortable tent with typical cleaning, cooking, entertainment facilities or fully equipped camp which includes diverse accessories, high tech stuff and a servant or two among other things – you are allowed to discover the authentic desert camping experience in Kuwait depending on how deep in touch with nature do you wish to get. You can have a race with your buddies through the endless ocean of sand in your four wheel powered vehicles, play football or volleyball, take part in horse or camel riding, enjoy chatting and eating at the camp fire or get some other way a feel of cultural roots of this country and enjoy the life style of tribes that lived their lives before us in a simple, pure, and definitely in more humble ways. That is also the season for the national bird to arise and fly around Kuwait – when mostly banned into the city and other living areas it is the time where it shows up and swirls through the country, day and night, depending on the wind to carry it around, raise up and down, blow it over the desert, highways, villas and buildings: blue plastic bags!! Camping season is the blessing for

20 www.citypageskuwait.com

these light birds to show up and be present where ever you go; the campers out in the desert are determined and thoughtful enough to take care of the ample supply. Not only blue plastic bags of course; there is enough garbage, boxes, papers, wrap papers, diverse disposal, that is left out to the nature to deal with, but most of it gets sooner or later caught by the wire fence that surrounds the camping areas, right? You can admire the garbage flicked fence while driving among a road towards Wafra but greeting you personally everywhere are carried by capricious wind gusts - the light flying plastic bags, mostly blue in color and small in size. The winter season also offers plenty of fun and picnic type activities for city people who do not have the time for traditional camping out in the desert but prefer to stay close to their homes – beautiful parks and beaches invite families for a cookout fun and gatherings with relatives and friends. Witnesses of the collective joy and relaxation practices are the multicolored waste bits and pieces that cover these areas the very next morning and are diligently removed by the yellow suited cleaners. They run against time tough in an effort to clean the gorgeous parks and beach areas from trash – come closer to the evening and people find themselves out there again generously littering their surroundings. As if saying that it is definitely the duty of an altruistic human to ensure enough work for the cleaners who otherwise wouldn’t have anything to do, would lose their jobs and would therefore probably have to leave the country, right? And as everywhere else in this time, blue birds accompany us in our daily outdoor activities, watch us eating shawarma, drinking tea and smoking shisha, fly over us when we walk, run, swim, or sit around, feel for us when we laugh or cry and are always there for us when we live in Kuwait.

BEAUTY

BOTOX® Botulinum toxin as popularly known trade names, BOTOX® produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum is a protein and neurotoxin. Large amounts of this toxin can cause botulism, a severe and dangerous illness in humans and animals, which can probably associate with food poisoning. BOTOX® started since the time FDA approved such usage in the late 1980’s for medical procedures and on April 2002 for various cosmetic purposes. Despite the fact that paralysis is considered as one of the most serious complications of botulism, scientists have discovered beneficial ways to use it to human advantage. Upon the discovery that BOTOX® could stop ailments like blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye) small amount of diluted BOTOX® are injected directly into specific muscles to cause controlled weakening. Cosmetic physicians is using BOTOX® for years for treatment of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows - called glabellar lines and also for excessive sweating in the underarm. However, Botox® is often used for other areas of the face such as crow’s feet by the side of the eyes, worry lines on the forehead, frown lines between eyebrows, wrinkles around the mouth, and neck bands.

22 www.citypageskuwait.com

BEAUTY Hyperhidrosis on the other hand is the medical term for severe sweating, where patients with experiencing such illness are sweating up to four or five times more than normal, far greater than what is required to regulate body temperature. Severe underarm sweating may be aggravated by stress, emotion or exercise, but often occurs spontaneously. BOTOX® injection is a minimally invasive treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004 to treat the symptoms of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis when medicines used are not sufficient enough in patients 18 years and above. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in people 18 to 65 years of age for a short period of time (temporary). Botox blocks signals from the nerves that tells the muscles to contract. The injected muscles can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox®. The effects of treatment for Hyperhidrosis are temporary, lasting approximately 6.7 months, BOTOX® is also injected into the axillary skin with use of tiny needles to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis) when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough in people 18 years and older. It is not known whether BOTOX® is safe or effective for severe sweating anywhere other than your armpits. BOTOX® injection takes only couple of minutes and no anesthesia is required. Botox® is injected with a tiny needle (insulin syringe needle) into specific muscles with slight pain. Generally it will take seven days till maximum of two weeks to take full effect and it is best to stopped Aspirin and antiinflammatory medications two weeks before treatment in order to decrease tendency of bruising. Injected Botox® will last up to four to six months. As muscle action slowly returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to appear again which will need another treatment. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax. Since Botox® doesn't work for all wrinkles, a consultation with a doctor is recommended.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox®? lDiscomfort or pain at the injection site, dry mouth, tiredness, and neck pain. lTemporary bruising is the most common side effect. lHeadaches, which resolve in 24-48 hours, can occur, but this is rare. lA small percentage of patients may develop eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight, drooping eyelids, swelling of your eyelids, and dry eyes. Drooping of the eyes usually resolves in three weeks. This development is usually caused by migration of the Botox and for this reason; you shouldn't rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection or lay down for three to four hours. There have been no allergies associated with Botox to date. lReactions include itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you experience any such symptoms; further injection of BOTOX® should be discontinued.

Who Should Not Receive Botox® Injection? lFemale patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding lPatients who have a neurological disease like myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis (MS), Easton Lambert disorder or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease) as you may be at increased risk of serious side effects including severe dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and respiratory compromise (difficulty breathing) from typical doses of BOTOX®. lPatient who have any allergies to egg, human albumin or botulinum toxin or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. lPatients taking amino glycoside medications. lIf you are taking aspirin, NSAID’s, St. John’s Worth, Gingko Biloba or high doses of Vitamin E supplements must be stop two weeks prior to treatment as permitted by your primary doctor. 23 October 2012

BEAUTY to introduce the filler into the wrinkles, folds or scars desired for treatment. It should be easy to administer, offer desired results, stays in the skin for the expected duration of time and must be safe if given correctly. Pain is expected in any procedures using injection; this can be prevented with the use of topical or injectable anesthesia and application of cold compress with ice on the treatment area. Initial discomforts are felt upon injection that should be diminished after sometime. Ice packs can be provided for the relief of the swelling, redness and discomfort from the injection. Results are expected to last from three months till five years, depending on which filler was used. It should be taken in consideration the area of treatment. For fillers injected in the lips has significantly less time to last, about three to six months, compared to the fillers used in nasolabial folds. Collagen based fillers has the shortest duration, while hyaluronic acid based fillers tend to last longer, usually lasting from six to one year. Other types of fillers last longer from two to four years, which are considered semi-permanent and may require surgery for removal when the result is not the achieved.

What to do or not to do after Botox ® treatment: 1. No straining, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise for 3-4 hours following treatment. 2. Avoid massaging the area for 3-4 hours following treatment. 3. After you receive your Botox, actively squint or smile for several hours after the injection without touching the area. 4. Be assured that any tiny bumps or marks will go

away within a few hours. Makeup may be applied right after the procedure.

5. DO NOT take a nap or go to sleep immediately after BOTOX® injections. 6. You may take a warm shower or bath after BOTOX® injections. DO NOT take a hot shower or bath as an increase in blood flow to the face may alter the effects of the BOTOX®. 7. Avoid taking Aspirin, Advil, Tylenol, and Vitamin E in order to reduce the risk of bruising. 8. REMEMBER YOUR SUNSCREEN EVERYDAY! 9. Unwanted muscle weaknesses are uncommon. If

any should occur that lead to eyebrow droop, mouth droop, double vision, asymmetric facial expression, or others, do not be alarmed. Call the clinic to be seen.

10. Botox injections take approximately 5-14 days before the effect will be seen. Please wait until the 14 days has passed before assessing if you are pleased with the result.

DERMAL FILLERS Dermal Fillers are containing substances Hyaluronic acid, Calcium, Hydroxylapatite and Collagen. It is becoming increasingly popular in helping reverse the changes related to aging. During aging process and 24 www.citypageskuwait.com

even weight loss, the natural Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid found in our skin are diminished, contributing to decreased facial volume and shape making facial lines and wrinkles more visible. Collagen is a major protein component of our body found particularly in our skin, elastin helps in allowing our skin to stay firm and be wrinkled free, while hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that contributes in absorbing water making the skin look hydrated at the same time adding volume and shape. The goal is to renew the skin into its original youthful look, therefore, Dermal Fillers aids by rejuvenating, boosting the volume, and improves the structure and elasticity of your skin making it glow and look naturally younger. Due to a huge range of fillers and its materials that can help restore the youthful look and fullness of the facial skin, each kind has its own unique effect and duration of time the result of each filler will last. These are some selections of dermal fillers available today. Some of the most popular include collagen based fillers (Evolence), hyaluronic acid based fillers (Restylane and Juvederm), and poly lactic acid based fillers (Sculptra) and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers such as Radiesse. It is important in achieving the successful results to keep in mind that there is no one filler applicable for all the areas of the face that needs treatment. Each area has its own unique filler to be used. Like for example, cheek augmentation procedures has filler that can’t be used at the same time for lip enhancement. Not all filler found in the market can be injected in the lips as well. It is best to research and learn which dermal fillers will be appropriate in achieving the best result of the area being treated. In connection, researchers in the medical and cosmetic field are continuously developing new treatments, so new products are constantly being tested and made available, with dermal fillers being no exception. Administering of dermal fillers are minimally invasive and takes only few minutes using small thin needle

Few complications may happen unless the procedure is done with the right technique, right filler, and right area of treatment by the right person. It must be taken into account that a reputable, experienced, qualified doctor is the right person for this job. Bleeding and bruising, swelling (edema) and pain are normal occurrences during filler injection. Risk for side effects are but not limited to: skin sensitivity, infection (Herpes Simplex), erythema, under or over correction, asymmetry, skin lumpiness, visible filler, migration of filler, antibodies to filler and scarring and in very rare situations: skin necrosis, granulomas, and damage to deeper structures. During hypersensitivity reaction, hyaluronic acid base filler are better to use, since it can be reversed by Hyaluronidase injection at the event of reaction. Each filler is unique so as to its own risk profile. Before going for any filler injection, you should talk to your doctor to ask and decide for the right filler for you. After dermal fillers treatments, you must avoid strenuous exercises, sleeping, laying or putting pressure on the injection site for the rest of the week. Before two weeks and one week from treatment taking aspirin, NSAID’s, St. John’s Worth, and high doses of Vitamin E for should be stopped as it may increase bruising and bleeding on injection site. No touching, rubbing or washing the area within 6hours following treatment until the anesthesia wears off, to avoid injuring your skin while the area is numb. When you’re sure that sensation has return that’s the time you can gently wash the area with soap and water. Exposure to sun should be prevented at all times, don’t forget to use sunscreen. Avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat like sauna or steam. It is best to understand when planning or asking your doctor for a filler procedure, it is better to have fillers injected in the area being treated with the required amounts, so even when the result is less than expected the filler can be easily added to achieve desired results, rather than having a treatment more than what is needed, giving undesirable results.

INTERVIEW

Committed to Perfect Teeth Dr. Eissa Nabeel Al Essa is a visionary as from his humble beginnings; he helped in the establishment of a strong pillar known as Asnan Tower, which is seen as a first-class Dentistry clinic in Kuwait. Dr. Eissa is the General Manager of Asnan Tower and specializes in Cosmetic and Comprehensive Dentistry from the University of Pittsburgh, USA, class of 2002. He is also a proud member of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Cosmetic dentistry. From the knowledge gleaned abroad, he brings valuable information to Kuwait, helping to elevate the standard of dental care. CityPages managed to win an eye-opening interview with Dr. Eissa, and he opened up about his amazing work.

When was Asnan Clinic/Tower established? What were the objectives behind forming a new clinic?

What advice do you give to your patients for better maintenance of teeth?

Asnan was started in 2002 with an educational website. We decided to acquire “asnan.com” to spread dental information not only in Kuwait, but also across Arabia. We did this because oral hygiene instructions and dental education is the “Most” important step in dental treatment. That is what we were taught to do back in the US. After that we decided to take dental education a step further with Asnan Magazine. We got the Ministry Of Health’s approval to distribute at the most important points, the waiting areas of all dental centers. We figured people would be more receptive to dental info at such points. After serving years in the government, we realized the need for quality dental care in the private sector. The public sector boasts of a very talented and highly educated group of dentists, but the load is very high and they are in short supply. Thus, my partners and I decided to build the Asnan Clinic. Asnan clinic opened its doors in 2008. Then, with the growing demand for high quality, US-standards dental care, we were able in 4 years to convert Asnan Clinic to Asnan Tower, the biggest dental center in the Middle East.

Stick to basics: floss once a day before bedtime, brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste and visit your dentist for cleaning and check-ups every 6 months. Did you notice that I mentioned flossing before brushing? I did that for 2 reasons: first, flossing is as important as brushing. Second, it’s better to floss before brushing for the “best” results against dental problems and pains.

How is Asnan Dental Clinic different from other dental clinics? What do you specialise in? Basically, we are the only dental center that has a US graduate specialist in every field of dentistry. Our mission is to provide the highest standards of US dental care in Kuwait. We are a piece of the US dental health system on Kuwaiti soil.

What kind of patients do you usually get? The best.. Asnan was built for those looking for the highest standards of dental care available today. 26 www.citypageskuwait.com

How often do you recommend your patients to change their toothbrush? The American Dental Association recommends changing toothbrushes when the bristles start to bend. Usually between 3 to 4 months.

Tell us about any of your most difficult experiences? “When there is a will, there is a way.” If you love your work, nothing is difficult. And with such a team of highly educated and trained US specialists, nothing is difficult at all.

Tell us about your achievements and awards? We are very proud to be a “Green” company. At Asnan, we don’t only believe in returning favor to Kuwait, but also to mother earth. We are the only center to get the “Super Brands” title for 2010 and 2011 and hopefully by the end of the year for 2012.

What advice would you like to give to people in general? Work as hard as you can. Nations are as strong as their people. Dream and aim big. If you don’t put in a plan and goals for your future, how will you achieve them?

INTERVIEW

What a great job you have accomplished in the past 2 years. I love your design, size, and topics. Keep up the great work.

Dr. Eissa N. Al Essa 27 October 2012

INTERVIEW

Floss, brush and visit your dentist every 6 months. I also recommend that you choose your medical and dental professional very carefully.

28 www.citypageskuwait.com

US courses and workshops are our best source. The exciting thing is that lately, many courses and lectures are provided in some online education. We still need the American workshops once or twice a year, but online courses are a convenient alternative.

How do you feel in your interactions with your patients?

Are there any tips you would like to pass on to readers of this interview?

It is exciting meeting and personalizing with people all the time.

Floss, brush and visit your dentist every 6 months. I also recommend that you choose your medical and dental professional very carefully. Pick someone with a good schooling and a good reputation. If you haven’t heard about the Doctor maybe there is a reason for that.

Reading, spending time with family and friends, and adventurous sports.

How does it feel to have one of the biggest dental centers in the Middle-East?

What do you do when you get an escape from your busy schedule?

Does it bother you when a patient doesn’t seem to take proper care of their own teeth? This does upset me and every dentist who cares. It upsets us not only because our patients are harming themselves, but also not taking care of dental health makes our work live shorter. For a quality dental care provider, nothing frustrates you like that.

How do you select your team? What is your criteria? A person who has accomplished high levels in US or UK training and has a great personality. That’s the minimum…

What are your hobbies?

It feels great. We are proud to work at such a place. Because of Asnan, dentistry in Kuwait is at the highest American standards. We are very proud to be able to return some of Kuwait’s favors and try to lead not only Kuwait, but the whole Middle East in the dental service sector.

I hit the gym and occasionally relax at a spa. At night, I love to work on my social media and read . Oh yes .. I almost forgot . I love to travel as well. I love to travel Big Time!

How do you regularly update your knowledge about this field?

At Asnan tower, we are so proud to have it all. Working on state-of-the-art dental chairs, x-rays, 3D radiographs, oral cameras, lasers, ultrasonic equipment, ultraviolet equipments, laughing gas and automatic teeth forming lab machines. Our big size enabled us to bring the greatest standard of equipment available today.

What kind of special equipment and techniques do you use?

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? What a great job you have accomplished in the past 2 years. I love your design, size, and topics. Keep up the great work. People in Kuwait need your pages. You make living in Kuwait more interesting and more fun and we need more fun in Kuwait. 

Breast Cancer: No scientific details

Dr. Nazia Nausheen

HEALTH

Every year millions of women are affected by breast cancer and its incidence rates have risen globally, with the highest rates in westernized countries. Reasons for this trend include change in reproductive patterns, increased screening, dietary changes, and decreased activity. The majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer will survive their disease because of progress in both earlier detection and improved treatment modalities. Hence, early detection is the best way to prevent death from breast cancer.

Early detection:

Is early diagnosis important?

Self breast exam remains an important part of early detection. Women can take the time to learn careful self-exam techniques. Annual exam with your primary care provider and annual mammogram remain our best screening tools. Annual mammograms are recommended to start at age 40 and may find 90 percent of cancers.

It is extremely important. 6 out of every 7 patients who are diagnosed when their breast cancer is at the early stage can be cured. However, if they are diagnosed when it has become advanced, the cure rate falls to about 1 in 7. It is extremely important to catch breast cancer at an early stage.

Self breast examination: If you find any of these signs/symptoms you should see your doctor right away. • A lump on or inside the breast • Change in the size or shape of a breast • Long-term dimpling of the breast skin • The nipple becoming inverted • Swelling or a lump in the armpit • Any suspicious nipple discharge

What is a Mammogram? It is an X-ray of the breast. This detects any lumps or dense areas in the breast, which may need further tests. The majority of these lumps or dense areas are not cancers, but they should all be checked. The further tests can include more x-rays, an ultrasound or a biopsy.7out of every 8 women sent for further tests do not have breast cancer.

Who should have a test? All women over 50 or any woman who finds a lump, or has any other symptoms of breast cancer, or has one or more close relatives diagnosed with breast cancer should be tested for breast cancer.

Myth or Truth: Is the use of deodorants linked to breast cancer? No, there is no good evidence to support this idea. On the contrary: in a large study comparing breast cancer patients and healthy women, there was no difference found at all in their use of underarm deodorants.

Is there any link between diet and breast cancer? Extensive research has failed to find any link between the diet and breast cancer risk, apart from fat. Studies suggest that a diet high in fat carries a slight increase in breast cancer risk.

What is a Biopsy? A small tissue sample is taken by inserting a needle into the suspect area of the breast. This is examined under a microscope. The shape and appearance of the cells in the tissue sample reveals whether the lump is benign (i.e. non-cancerous), or cancerous.

Let’s Learn to Talk the Talk by Understanding the Words If the vocabularyis wrong, the diet can never be right.

Two studies published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine ostensibly compared the noted Atkins® high fat, high protein diet with a generic low fat, high carbohydrate diet as recommended by most major health organizations. Press releases of both studies used the term carbohydrate without telling us if they meant processed carbohydrate or unprocessed carbohydrate. There is a vast difference between the meaning and implications of these two very different terms. For example, a large body of science based-evidence tells us that processed carbohydrates: • Stimulate hunger • Promote weight gain • Oppose weight loss • Promote disease • Push the wrong hormone buttons. Whereas unprocessed carbohydrates: • Do not stimulate hunger • Do not promote weight gain • Actually aid weight loss • Push the right hormone buttons. Clearly then, unprocessed carbohydrates are the good guys and processed carbohydrates are the bad guys. Obviously then no legitimate comparisons can be made between weight loss diets without very carefully making an unambiguous distinction between these two very different terms. You cannot be successful managing your weight unless you • Mean what you say. • And say what you mean! I have never met an author of a diet book who did not regularly misuse dietary terminology! They all do it. Big selling books by famous doctors, it seems, offer no protection whatever from this common and confusing error. Fred was a 44 year old government lawyer. I could always count on him to ask plenty of questions. “Doctor Green, which diet is best, the high carbohydrate diet, the high protein diet, or the high fat diet?” This is a perfectly reasonable question. However, in order to answer clearly and accurately we must first know, precisely what is meant by: • The word diet • The word carbohydrate • The word fat • The word protein

Definition #1 Diet: The word diet is from the Greek and means A Way of Life. However in colloquial American English it has come to mean a weight reducing regimen, as in the Sonoma Diet®, the Abs Diet®, Atkins® Diet, the Pritikin® Diet, the DeanOrnish® Diet, the Mayo Clinic® Diet, the Duke University® Diet, the South Beach® Diet and now The Millennium Advantage®, the New Science of Weight 34 www.citypageskuwait.com

Control Diet. The original Greek meaning of diet conveys a very powerful notion. The New Science of Weight Control Diet is precisely that, a Way of Life for the rest of your life.

Definition #2 Carbohydrate: The word carbohydrate has a very specific meaning in biochemistry. This meaning is complicated and useful only for the professional chemist. In general, carbohydrates are arrangements of sugars built and stored within plants (starch) and animals (glycogen) as reservoirs of energy. Most commonly in plants these sugars are chemically stuck together in very long chains like pears on a string.

Definition #3 The terms simple and complex carbohydrate, in reality, have no meaning at all. Technically, carbohydrates are classified as monosaccharaides (single sugars), disaccharides (double sugars), tri-saccharides (triple sugars), polysaccharides (many sugars), and hetero-saccharides (mixed sugars). No real science-based authority or dictionary defines a simple or complex carbohydrate. These terms are confusing, mean differing things to different authors, and should be avoided, especially when discussing dieting for weight loss.

Definition #4 Unprocessed carbohydrates (good guys) are the carbohydrates in fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains etc. in their natural state just as they appear in nature, or just as they come from the farmer’s field. So long as carbohydrates are unprocessed, they retain their tough outer coating of cellulose and bran, as well as their full complement of vitamins and minerals. This natural configuration: • Slows digestion and absorption • Prevents fat storage • Will not cause insulin resistance • Nor abdominal obesity and associated diseases.

Science Based Fact Unprocessed carbohydrates (good guys) decrease hunger hormones and promote satiation hormones.

Definition #5 Processed carbohydrates (bad guys) are fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains after they have been modified by milling, grinding, cooking, juicing, etc. Examples of processed carbohydrates are: • Sugar (processed from beets or cane) • Honey (nectar, processed by the bees) • Corn syrup

HEALTH • High fructose sweeteners • Milled and ground grains and their products including bread, cookies, pasta, bagels, pancakes, corn chips, corn bread and cereals, (except 100% bran). The milling and grinding of grains disrupts the protective natural outer coat of the grain and fragments the internal starch (sugar) chains into smaller starch (sugar) units allowing speedy digestion and absorption, which, • Increases hunger hormones • Delays satiation hormones • Promotes rapid caloric absorption • Promotes insulin resistance • Facilitates fat storage, especially in the abdominal region. For our purposes then, the major difference between processed and unprocessed carbohydrate is the amount of processing that has occurred. This is a vital concept because the more processing that occurs, • The more the natural packaging (fiber) surrounding the sugar chains will be disrupted. The smaller the starch (sugar) particles will ultimately become, and the starch (sugar) within will quicklybe digested into single sugars and absorbed.

Definition #6 Abdominal Obesity is fat storage inside the abdominal wall and is associated with diets rich in processed carbohydrates. Abdominal obesity causes insulin resistance, hypertension, adult onset diabetes, heart disease, strokes and some forms of cancer.

Definition #7 Insulin resistance is a condition wherein insulin becomes less and less effective, thus requiring more and more insulin to do the same job.

Insulin resistance is caused by diets rich in processed carbohydrates.

Science Based Fact The more processing the carbohydrate has experienced, the faster the digestion and absorption. Repetitive ingestion of processed carbohydrates is closely associated with The Metabolic Syndrome: insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated blood fats and heart disease. Ed was a 26-year-old unmarried first year law clerk who presented to my office with new onset stress, fatigue, thirst, frequent urination and difficulty controlling his weight. Prior to law school Ed had been an athlete, playing college level football, baseball and golf. Fitness was a lifelong passion and though work was putting serious demands on his time, he still lifted weights for an hour, two days each week, and ran one hour, two to three days weekly. On presentation: Height: 6’2” 188 cm Weight: 106 kg (during law school Ed weighed 93 kg) Blood pressure: 162/94 Cholesterol: 290 mg/dl fasting, (normal <200) Blood sugar: 220 mg/dl, fasting (normal <110) Waist: 91.44 cm (during undergraduate school it was 81.2 cm) No family history of obesity, or heart disease Father was an adult onset diabetic on oral medication BMI = Weight kg / Height in meters squared BMI = 106/1.88 x1.88 = 30.02 (18 to 25 normal, 25 to 30 is overweight and over 30 is obese) A fasting blood sugar of over 200 with symptoms of new onset fatigue, thirst, and frequent urination was sufficient to diagnosis Ed as a new diabetic. In addition, if we consider that his father was a diabetic we can add validity to the diagnosis. Recall that diabetes is hereditary. Ed’s BMI of 30.02 indicates that he is also obese. His waist, having increased from 81 cm to 91cm indicates abdominal obesity, which tells us that he also has insulin resistance, which explains his metabolic syndrome; that is, his diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol. Metabolic syndrome is a strong predictor of heart disease, cancer, stroke and early death! Ed’s dietary history was very interesting indeed. He reported frequently skipping breakfast and lunch to save calories. Prior to every workout, he ate a power bar and drank a power drink. Both products are popular with weight lifters and are readily available for purchase in fitness facilities. On examination of the labels of these products, what do you think we found? Go to the head of the class if you said these products contain very high levels of processed carbohydrate. Actually: • The power bar contained 45 grams of processed carbohydrate. • In addition, the power drink contained another 90 grams of processed carbohydrate. Recall that processed carbohydrate is sugar by another name! Neither label specifically identified the carbohydrate as processed carbohydrate, but we can be sure that all the carbohydrate in both products was processed (note:

unprocessed foods do not have or require labeling). Now let’s do the math. 90 grams + 45 grams = 135 grams x 4 calories per gram = 540 calories of pure processed carbohydrate. 540 calories, consumed 5 days each week, multiplied times 52 weeks = 140,400 calories yearly. 140,400 calories divided by 7,700 calories per kilo = 18 kgof new fat stored in your body each year. Whew! No wonder Ed was having difficulty with weight control, had added 10 cm to his waistline, and developed insulin resistance and diabetes.

Science Based Fact Processed carbohydrate = sugar = fat storage. Ed elected immediately to begin the New Science of Weight Control diet. After a bit of education and collaborative plan design, we implemented his program. Within 3 months: • His weight was down to 93 kg. • Fasting blood sugar (89 mg/dl) was normal without medication. • Blood pressure (118/64) was normal without medication. • Cholesterol (178 mg/dl) was normal without medication. • And his waist had decreased to 80 cm inches. He no longer uses the high sugar power products saving himself 18.2 kg worth of calories yearly! Instead, he substitutes a complete meal replacement (CMR, clean pharmaceutical grade protein, vitamins and minerals) for added energy before his workout and daily run. Ed has had more than a few life challenges that have complicated his new life style, including a law firm partnership, marriage, king size mortgage and three children. Ed has experienced a few weight excursions, too, but with his knowledge of the New Science of Weight Control diet, Ed always bounces back. It has been over 16 years now and he still walks the walk and talks the talk. Ed enjoys knowing that The New Science of Weight Control program is a lifelongWay of Life that he can live with! Estimating the number of calories in a meal is very difficult even for trained nutritionists and medical doctors.

Science Based Fact In tests, professionals were not able to estimate the number of calories in meals they were shown to greater accuracy than plus or minus 50%! If professionals have this much difficulty, how can you expect yourself to do better? For this reason, and other reasons that we shall see, calorie counting is not useful in choosing foods for your dieting for weight loss, or a weight maintenance program. Food categories, on the other hand, are easier to understand, recognize and use. The two most important food categories are: • Foods that do store in the body: Processed carbohydrates, fats/oils. • Foods that do not store in the body: Unprocessed carbohydrates and proteins. 35 October 2012

Go Segafredo, Go! I had heard very good feedback about Segafredo Zanetti! espresso from various friends but never had a chance to try for myself. Moreover, I always had the feeling that they only serve coffee and desserts. However, my best friend invited me to their newly opened outlet in Al-Fanar Mall in Salmiya, and I was surprised! They had a complete dining and take away menu. Segafredo Zanetti Espresso is truly the world leader in Espresso. I discovered that the quality of the coffee depends on the blend. Quality that achieves heights of excellence starts with the selection of raw materials. The coffee fruit deriving from the evergreen shrub of the RUBIACEAE genus coffee. The most popular varieties are ARABICA and ROBUSTA. A cup of coffee made from a single variety cannot be called as an espresso. An espresso is the painter’s art of copying colors it is a symphony played by many members of an orchestra. I also came to know that Segafredo is only the company in the world selects the best varieties of Arabica and Robusta. All from the same area and carefully controlled and blends them ongoing effort to obtain the best possible product. I promptly went in and ordered a variety of delicacies for myself. Starting with a nutritious salad, I chose to have the Ceasar Segafredo Chicken Salad, with its crispy fresh lettuce leaves and delicious chicken breast. One can dig into original Italian cuisine at Segafredo and that is just what I did. In my Main Course, I had a Gamberi Parmigiano, which has breaded jumbo shrimps served with nicely whipped tatter sauce and sautéed vegetables. Now, I have lived by the sea for more than 20 years and know what good seafood is about. Biting into this delicacy, I knew that it had the best-chosen shrimps, cooked in perfect measure. A friend of mine also soon joined me for lunch and the Pollo Grigliata, a grilled chicken dish, which she had ordered was also lip smacking. Though we were quite full by now, we could not resist ordering the delicious looking Tagliata Di Manzo, which the customers at the neighboring table had ordered. 36 www.citypageskuwait.com

We were not disappointed as this grilled beef dish was truly as delightful to taste as it was to our eyes. The juices from the meat, tenderly cooked to a beautiful brown, leapt up to tantalize our taste buds. Need I tell you more about the aroma of all these dishes that I can recollect even as I write about it now? No matter how stuffed you are, it is impossible to leave a Segafredo Zanetti outlet without having the mind-blowing desserts they serve. We had a Tiramisu, flavored with rich coffee espresso and layered with creamy mascarpone. Next, we ordered an Apple Pie, which had fresh apple pieces and a lovely trace of cinnamon in it. I also packed home a cheesecake, as I know my mother loves the ones made at all the other five Segafredo Zanetti outlets in Kuwait. This sixth outlet at Al Fanar mall did a great job too and saved me from the glares I would have gotten from her for spending a bomb on all the clothes and accessories while shopping that day. Located on the Mezzanine Floor of Al Fanar mall, this Segafredo Zanetti outlet is tastefully designed in a spacious manner and looks down into the mall’s atrium area. Therefore, whether you want to have a business meeting, hang out with friends over coffee or enjoy a meal with your family, Segafredo Zanetti is the place for you. This joint is open from 9am to 11pm and even does free home deliveries. They even have a special breakfast menu and a variety of drinks, which I suggest you guys should check out. Follow Segafredo Zennitte Espresso to find your way in the world of espresso. Espresso is a coffee enjoyed all around the world which comes from a unique process. The perfect blend is of high importance. Segafredo Zanetti espresso consists of Arabica and Robusta beans roasted according to an ancient vinician recipes. The real art of getting a unique blend is the perfect coordination of individual raw coffee beans. Segafredo Zanetti espresso blend was developed by the best and experienced Italian craftsmen of the coffee business and is the same all over the world.

CrossFit. If you’re toying with the idea of fitness and have been doing your research, I’m pretty sure you’ve come across this fitness terminology. According to CrossFit.Com, the term “crossfit” refers to “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement.”

In a nutshell, your crossfit training enables you to go about your daily life in a more fitter and functional manner. It differs from more traditional methods of weight training as with weight lifting, one predominantly carries out their strength exercises usually in a more one-dimensional aspect. With CrossFit, you do lift weights but you vary the session by collaborating or adding more functional forms of exercise prescription to it.

facility. Circuit+ held its grand opening ceremony right here in the heart of Shuwaikh Industrial. The brainchild of Saoud Al-Humaidhi, Bader Al-Banna, Abdulrazaq AlMutawa and Ahmed Al-Joaan, this gym definitely has some mint fitness equipment to gape at (most of the equipment is by Rogue Fitness, which is the top provider in the United States for CrossFit gear and the official equipment provider for the CrossFit Games).

If you’re lost at this point, imagine this. Traditional forms of weight training include say bench presses, bicep curls, squats, deadlifts and shoulder presses. Crossfit forms of exercises include handstands, ball slams, barbell snatches, rope climbs, walking lunges and push presses. As crossfit sessions are usually time-sensitive (ie. you have to clock a string of exercise under a certain amount of time), it’s no surprise why the first couple of CF sessions usually feel like death.

On the top floor of this 600m2 facility, Circuit+ also has a section dedicated to martial arts, with a myriad of Everlast boxing bags, tires, ropes, sledgehammers, sandbags, skip ropes and prowlers. You’re basically a hop, skip and a jump away from reaching a higher level of functional fitness.

On the 22nd of September 2012, Kuwait was bestowed with its first crossfit style

So does this mean you have to be already physically fit to sign up to this place?

According to Saoud Al-Humaidhi, “all our CrossFit trainers here are Level 1 CrossFit Certified. The gym is actually affiliated with the American CrossFit Organization. In part with this affiliation, we strive to educate everyone on the importance of being fit in a healthy and functional way. Anyone who walks through our doors is able to take part in our WOD (Workout Of The Day). Our skilled trainers will scale it to suit your fitness needs and goals.” Part of Circuit+’s opening ceremony also included a crossfit-style competition whereby a total of 36 athletes in 12 teams from 6 different health clubs/companies in Kuwait took part in the event. Says Bader Al-Banna, “It’s amazing how people come together in a community in these training sessions. Yes they have a lot of fun as the workouts are nontraditional, exciting, effective and are carried out in a motivating atmosphere.”

A sniff of a Doggy day at K’S PATH! My name is Boss and I am one of the longest doggy residents at the K’S PATH Companion Animal Shelter. A lot of people come and visit the shelter but they only stay for a short time and don’t really know more about what us doggies do all day. So I thought I would take this opportunity to give you a sniff of a doggy day. At the shelter, I live with about 75 other dogs and I bunk with one very good friend. Dusty wakes me up before 7am because she has a surprisingly small bladder and dances with her legs crossed for a few minutes until our caretakers come in to let us out for our morning business. Once all of our neighbors have been let out too, we get our very yummy breakfast. We are always starving because we are dogs and inhale our food that is specially made for each of us. Even though Dusty looks smaller, she gets more food than I do and I get very jealous. This is when we start to notice that our rooms are a bit smelly because the puppies down the hall still poop in theirs. Disgusting! So our caretakers let us back out into our fun play yard while our bedroom gets cleaned. Can you believe we get clean blankets and toys every morning?! We like being spoiled. When we come back, our bedroom is also stocked with rawhides, scrumptious! I haven’t had to live in any other shelter but some of my neighbors have and they tell me our digs are so much better. We have big bedrooms that measure 1.5m by 4m with a solid door for privacy. I would hate not having my own space and everyone being able to see in. That would upset me and probably bring out the woofs in all of us making it very noisy. I love how quiet and peaceful our home is. At about 10am, we all start getting very excited because it is time for our play-time in the garden and our walks. I try really hard to wait patiently for my turn, but it is really difficult and sometimes I jump up to look through my window to see what is going on. When it is my turn, I know immediately if I am going for a walk or I am going into the garden because when we go for walk, they put these really special harnesses on us that make it so much more fun to walk. Mine is a beautiful blue. Sometimes I get over excited when I see the chickens and the harness doesn’t let me pull and make myself cough, which really hurts my throat. Most days I am walked by volunteers who come specially out to Wafra just to walk and love me. It makes me feel so special! In the garden Dusty LOVES to run around in circles getting really hot so she jumps into the pool to cool herself off. But I don’t want to get my beautiful white fur dirty and so he I takes it easy. She keeps telling me I am so booooring…. At 2pm when all of us have had our walk and play-time in the garden, I am exhausted!!! So I take a long nap.

Sometimes Dusty tries to sleep in my bed but I always remind her that I have been here longer and I am in fact the boss and no one is allowed to sleep in my bed. Sometimes I spend a couple minutes licking my peanut butter Kong before dozing off. Everything starts up again at 5pm. I am so glad I get let out again because I drank so much water after our walks and play, I really need to go. The puppy bedrooms have to be cleaned again but not mine, Dusty and I keep our bedroom very clean. Because Dusty and I are big dogs, we get to go for another walk in the evening before dinner arrives around 6pm. We of course are starving again and eat it as fast as possible which is the best way to eat a meal. My mom always taught me to polish off my plate and I definitely do. After dinner we get to go out one more time because we need to make space for all that new food and then we settle down for the night. The lights get turned off at 8pm. Some of the puppies cry a little bit at night because they miss their mommy but I always try to sing them to sleep and let them know that they are in a good place and everything will be alright. Although I really like living in the shelter, I have been here for almost 2 years and would really love to find a comfy home. If you want to learn more about me, you can see my photo at www.kspath.org, send an email to info@kspath.orgor call on +965 6700 1622. I don’t answer the phone but the people who do will tell you all about me and my friends. If you don’t want to adopt a dog but would like to visit us all and have some doggy fun, come on down for Shelter Open Day on the 20th of October from 10am to 2pm. Please visit our website or our Facebook page for more information. Have a Woof of a Day! 41 October 2012

Sheikha/ Bashayer Naif.Jabir AlAhmad ALSabah

Queen of Creamy Concoctions Pastry maestro Sheikha Bashayer is the remarkable woman whose handwork and determination is the reason Kuwait has a one-stop-shop for specialized delicacies. Imagine the most tantalizing, creamy sweets and pastries laid out before you in glorious colors and shapes. Delicioso offers you the joy of savoring amazing tastes from over 25 countries - including Lebanon, Brazil and China- a variety of delicacies that boasts individual flavors and a delectable essence from their country of origin. With creativity, enthusiasm and a finely honed palate, Sheikha Bashayer has crafted a menu of sublime treats. CityPages talked with the “sweets” creator for insight into her business.

Please introduce yourself to our readers? I am a journey woman!! Passionate about life and hungry for knowledge, I am truly in love with exquisite cuisine from around the world. I believe in hard work and the emotional creativity that goes into my work. I have a deep respect for those wealthy people who through all the trials and tribulations of the day - still manage to remain to stay on the top, as a result of their faith in their creativity, intuition and persistence against the odds.

Tell us about your education? Business Management and a major in the Creative Arts, University of Lebanon.

When did you launch Delicioso officially? April of 2010, ‘Delicioso’ was initiated as a modest home based business, which grew in volume due to popular demand within two years. Thus, prompting the opening of an official outlet at Galeria 2000 Mall on July 15, 2012.

Did you face any difficulties in establishing your business and opening your flagship store? Nothing comes easy, as I faced many hurdles starting from selecting the ideal location to stage my shop, to logistics, a support office, skilled work force, and finance, to say the least. But through dedication, focus and hard work these hurdles were overcome, and of course, my enthusiastic clients appreciated my cuisine to help me drive my dream further into reality.

What inspired you to enter the sweet business? I noticed that most of the sweet shops in Kuwait offer 42 www.citypageskuwait.com

a limited selection of sweets from certain parts of the world. So I got the idea to provide a taste of sweets from all parts of the world under the same roof. Almost 25 countries are covered and we are expanding!!

What makes Delicioso so special? You don't have to travel around the world to taste different sweets. Delicioso brings the world to your doorstep, and saves you the money and effort.

Besides serving sweets from 25 different countries, what else makes your product unique and outstanding? Though we offer sweets from 25 different countries, each sweet has a unique recipe and a blend of mouthwatering natural home-made flavors.

How did you decide to select the countries from where you currently serve the sweets from?

During my experimental phase, I worked hard from home to create good international recipes. Every time I prepared a sweet, I would share it with family and friends, and the product that got the most thumbs up (even now) stayed on the list!

What was the source of the recipes? I have collected recipes from all over the world, but the secret behind the final product is the extensive tweaks from the experimentation stage to the final recipe.

What is the source of the ingredients? Do you import or get any special ingredients from outside? Although this sounds ironic for a shop that offers international sweets, all ingredients are from the local markets.

You are personally involved in your business and almost do everything

yourself. How do you think it helps your business? When the business owner is involved in every tiny detail during the production, it ensures that the final product will have the taste and essence of homemade quality, especially since our aim is to provide “the best” to our customers.

What was the procedure of finalizing your menu? Definitely popularity and variety were the most important parameters considered, and I would say that the menu is still expanding and will continue to grow.

What are some of your personal favorite sweets from Delicioso ? My entire menu!!

Which sweet is the hot seller at Delisioso? ‘Pavlova’, an Australian sweet and ‘Brigadiero’ from Brazil are bestsellers, while gaining in popularity as a mix-sweet we have the ‘Black Berry Coffee’ and the ‘Butterfly Coffee.’

What is the biggest challenge you face in providing so many different kinds of sweets all the time? Fostering and nurturing enthusiasm in my talented but limited work staff.

PAWS ...this is why we are existing! Yesterday PAWS got an emergency call from an American Lady in Bayan 13. An obviously abandoned, very friendly cat was abused over several days by children and a Harris in the neighborhood. Unfortunately this cat was very trustful to people and this was her doom. Her jaw was dislocated by a kick, one of her rips was broken by another kick, the day before the rescue the same children tried to set her on fire, the animal is suffering from a severe wound under her tommy.

a chance to live!

The rescue itself was very unspectacular; I searched for her, she was hiding very exhausted under a tree in the street. When I talked to her she started meowing and came with shaking legs closer. I picked her up and had to fight my discomfort to hurt her more, because a huge part of her tommy was crusted with blood and loose skin. She was pouring in my arm and rubbed her crooked head in my hand. I could admit her as aPAWS emergency case to the Royal Animal Hospital, the vets were amazed by her personality, she was unbelievable friendly and thankful that people took care of her. She has a very good chance to recover and will be advertised for adoption soon.

Don’t let it happen that PAWS has to give up because of incomprehensible circumstances, we have to find a new place and need to raise a huge amount of money to make another move to another area somewhere in Kuwait! Help us with donations and your personal network please!

The reason I am telling you this story is simple; this cat and many other hundred of pets every year thrown away like garbage, neglected from owners, abused by humans, because they are sick, ugly, useless or just unnecessary, need people like this Lady, need responsible people, need PAWS to take care of them!

Kuwait,You have never left us alone!

PAWS rescued and treated so many animals during the last 7 years, many of them would have been euthanized in other shelters or countries, because they were too crashed, too broken, too sick or injured. But we PAWS with all our silent helpers and committed volunteers from all nations don’t care for breed, value or beauty, who are we to judge if a creature has enough value to live or not? Every animal is given a positive perspective by our cooperating vets, will get 46 www.citypageskuwait.com

IF PAWS has to close the shelter doors, will there be enough people in Kuwait to rescue during nights and days, are there enough people willing to pay a fortune to save a simple life? PAWS became a valuable institution in KUWAIT, people know us beyond the borders, people trust and believe in our work for all the nameless, voiceless animals.

Since our notice for eviction is end of October we are working untiringly to find a solution. WE hope and pray to find a permanent location soon. We would like to thank YOU for the donations you made already, for the many, many calls of support and assistance. May you all be blessed and trust furthermore in us , we will not give up! PAWS will continue! Please donate on our website www.paws-kuwait.org or e-mail us info@paws-kuwait.org or call me personally + 99064229 or e-mail manuku62@yahoo.de All donations will be listed and will be used for shelter concerns only. With my deepest respect for the country of Kuwait and all their citizens,

Manuela Tague, Chair person PAWS

BOOK CLUB

Empire of The Ants “In the few seconds it will take you to read these four lines: - 40 human beings and 700 million ants will have been born on earth. - 30 human beings and 500 million ants will have died on earth.” How would you feel when a book starts like that? You will be instantly hooked! That’s exactly what happened to me reading the first page of this book. We have always heard that ants are God's little soldiers. If you ever watched any animal programs you would probably know that for a fact. In the book Empire of The Ant by Bernard Werber (who is a French writer and scientific journalist that studied ants for 15 years, who lives in Paris), you get to see how the ant’s empire is just like any empire that was built throughout history. Organized, well-structured and always ready for war is how I would describe theirs. As ants is one of the oldest, if not the oldest civilization known to have lived on earth. They have survived nuclear wars well as natural disasters and they still live with us. After reading this book I fully understand the ants’ way of live, and now I have a complete respect for these little creatures in size and not in smartness. The story takes place in Paris, in an apartment of a French family who recently moved to it after the father inherited it from his uncle (the book was originally in French and was translated into English by Margaret Rocques). The three individuals (a man, a woman and a young boy) had no idea how their life would change after that, and all his uncle left them was a letter with his mother that says, “Never go down to the cellar.” Of course, when someone tells you not to do something, your curiosity kills you to find out why! One after the other they went down to the cellar not knowing what was down there, or how long will they stay. The scenery 50 www.citypageskuwait.com

keeps changing from the human’s world to the ants’ world and so on. Both are as interesting as each other, however, one was so new to me as I’m sure it’s going to be new to you. This book has facts spoon-fed to the readers in the most astonishing way ever. For example, when you learn that ants don’t have names but coded numbers that they can smell off of each other to identify one another (as ants can’t see very well). They are enemies with other insects; they always struggle to survive that brutal life, and what weapons do they have to defend themselves! Also, how ants can tell time by feeling the change in temperature even when being underground. This book will teach you many life lessons. If we humans learnt from the ants’ federations we would have improved our way of life and communication with each other degrees and degrees more. Don’t be fooled into believing that it’s a boring book; because it turned out to be the complete opposite. It has a very catchy storyline and very different interesting characters; both humans and ants. The book has a bit of complicated scientific language but it isn't hard to read at all. Empire of the ants is one of three other books that are all part of one series, however, only the first book was translated into English. Empire of the ants was originally published in 1991 although it has many editions that came out after that. I recommend this book for all ages; anyone who is interested in learning about this brilliant civilization living beneath our feet.

BOOK CLUB

October Book Releases Publishers often release books from big name authors in the fall. This year is no exception. Will Justin Cronin live up to his debut? Will Tom Wolfe make a comeback? Or do you prefer to stick with your favorite genre author -- perhaps a John Grisham legal thriller or Kate Morton mystery? These are some of the books that are expected to be big releases in October 2012, winding down a year that has been full of great reads.

Live by Night

The End of Your Life Book Club

Dennis Lehane has long been a favorite crime writer. His first foray into historical fiction, The Given Day, was one of our Top 10 Books of 2008, so we're looking forward to the follow up novel, Live by Night. Live by Night takes place during Prohibition, and there are already rumors of a movie adaptation starring Leonardo Dicaprio.

Will Schwalbe relates the true story of the "book club" he started with his mother during the last years of her life. When Schwalbe's mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, they began reading books together. Those books led to conversations about a wide range of topics and reflections on the power of books. This is one of those books for people who love books and feel reflective in autumn.

Does this Church Make Me Look Fat?

The Twelve

Rhoda Janzen's memoir Mennonite in a Little Black Dress, about moving back in with her conservative Mennonite parents after her husband left her for a man he met online, was a New York Times bestseller. Janzen's back with more of her story -- falling in love, fighting cancer and returning to faith -- in Does this Church Make Me Look Fat?.

The Twelve is the second book in the trilogy Justin Cronin began withThe Passage. We named The Passage one of the Top 10 Books of 2010. This vampire trilogy is a far cry from Twilight and the romantic vampires that have become so popular.

The Secret Keeper

The Racketeer

We enjoyed The House at Riverton by Kate Morton, but her last book,The Forgotten Garden, was one of our Most Disappointing Books of 2009. Morton has a following, though, so there will definitely be interest in this latest book. The Secret Keeper is a mystery that takes place in the English countryside and London over 50 years.

John Grisham has branched out from legal thrillers, but those are the books his fans still crave. The Racketeer returns to this genre, telling the story of a federal judge who is found murdered from the perspective of a lawyer who is in jail and who knows who killed the judge.

Back to Blood

Justin Cronin

John Grisham

Astray

Tom Wolfe

Emma Donoghue

Back to Blood by Tom Wolfe is a novel about immigration and race relations in Miami. Wolfe is a bestselling author of books like Bonfire of the Vanitities, but he has been on hiatus for a few years.

Emma Donoghue's last book, Room, was a runaway bestseller and one of our Best Books of 2010. Astray is a collection of short stories about traveling, but critics say she returns with the same tight writing.

FICTION

Letter to the reader, Thank you for turning to this page and taking time to at least read until here. If you choose to continue, allow me to prepare you for what you are about to read. The following is a story which will be divided into many parts of CityPages. This one being the first part. I cannot offer a summary or a synopsis due to the fact that I believe stories are like clouds. They are not defined by what they look like. No. They are defined by how they look to you and what shapes they take on when you look at them. The way you perceive and understand a story depends on your own life experiences and can uncover hidden paths within your soul. What I can do is ask you a question: If you were offered the chance to go back and admit to lies you have told and deceptions you have acted out, would you? Or would you wait until the lies caught up with you to finally come clean? Enjoy the read! The modern dictionary defines a lie as “a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive.” Others might justify a lie as a “white lie.” We have all heard the sentence “I was only lying to protect you.” Regardless of the reasoning behind it, a lie is a lie. The dictionary does not offer insight to the consequences of a lie. Similarly, we as people do not think about how a certain lie may come back to haunt us or members of our family. For if we did, we would always default to telling the truth. But even the best and wisest of us all lies. I wait for the day when an elementary student, sitting at the dinner table doing homework, picks up a children’s dictionary - that their mother responsibly purchased during last summer’s book sale - and looks up the word lie and find the following: Lie - verb \ˈlī\: A statement that may seem harmless at first but soon, unbeknownst to he who told the lie, takes shape growing limbs to help it move faster and ears to make it listen to every move you make. After a few years, a lie matures and develops its most critical characteristic. Patience. Patience enables the lie to lurk in the darkness and linger as it watches your every steps and listens to every breath you take until its ready to make it move. 52 www.citypageskuwait.com

Names From the Past Part I

Hakim never understood claustrophobia. Being in small tight places was something he actually preferred. “The smaller the area the more control you have,” he told the passenger sitting beside him who was clearly feeling uncomfortable in his surroundings. But it was clear that those words did not help. Hakim turned his attention back to his notepad and continued jotting down the names of people who he crossed paths with during his lifetime. He noted the name, the place, his age when he met the person and possibly a few lines about the relationship. Being in his late fifties, it was hard trying to recall everybody but he tried his best starting from the first meaningful relationship and took it from there. Ezra Jaber: Kuwait, 13 years-old, brother Jacob Ramzi: Kuwait, 18 years-old, best friend Percy Williams: Scranton, United States, 24 years-old, roommate

So here he was a week after making the decision. On a sixteen-hour flight. Remembering those he had come across in his lifetime. He willingly opened the doors and nothing would stop the memories from forcing the door wide open. The memories raced to possess Hakim’s thoughts, dreams and fears. *

The list took longer than he thought it would. For with each name he remembered, a door of memories would open and drown him with images of the past. Memories that, only until now, he realized, he had pushed aside willing them never to return. But now he allowed them to come. In fact, he wanted them to. He needed to remember. One by one the images cleared and he was slowly able to remember details as if a part of his brain was awaking from a deep and long sleep. Hakim relaxed, as much as one could, and allowed these images through. Time was on his side and this long flight would guarantee it. Hakim was never spontaneous when it came to taking trips. In fact, he did not like taking trips at all. So it was surprising even to him that he planned this trip, made the proper reservations and took time off work within a week. If anyone asked where he was planning on going and how long he was planning on staying at his answer was “I’m not sure.” “Sir, when would you like your return flight to be?” the lady at the travel agency asked. “I’m not sure,” Hakim replied. “How long would you like the booking at the hotel to be?” “I’m not sure.” “So you’re finally taking a vacation huh,” some of his buddies at work told him. “Where do you plan on going?” “I’m not really sure yet,” he replied. Hakim wasn’t sure of the where or how long. But what he did know was why he needed to take this trip. Why he needed to take it now. Now before it was too late.

Over 30 years have gone by since his best friend died. He did not like to think of him as his ‘best friend’ as that sounded too juvenile and did not do justice to the relationship they once had. Brother was the word he would usually which would usually result in strange looks from those close to him. Those who knew. But like everything else, Hakim saw things differently. To him, titles like brother, mother, father, etc… were not something God-given. They were titles earned. And so, 30 years ago Hakim’s brother lost the battle with cancer. Diagnosed at 18-years-old, he would not live to see his 21st birthday. Being so young, everyone Ezra would pull through and beat the diseases. However, the doctors soon found out that the cancer was at a very advanced stage and it was only a matter of time. Hakim was in denial until he received a phone call. Ezra’s father was on the other end, “he lives through you now.” * Hakim and his brother Ezra had been inseparable from the day they met. They practically did everything together from going to the same school to wearing matching clothes. Being a product of a broken home, Hakim was in need of a close friend. A confidant. Ezra filled that void as Hakim took to him the moment they met. Ezra in return was fascinated by Hakim’s western background and the different (also western) style he possessed. In many cases, Ezra placed Hakim on a pedestal so high that Hakim felt like a celebrity around him. He gave Hakim a sense of significance that had been missing from his life. Hakim certainly did not feel worthy of the attention he was getting and although he was often caught off-guard with Ezra’s admiration, he embraced it. The relationship was clearly defined.

Hakim was the leader. Hakim was the alpha. Because Ezra wanted to be like Hakim, he remained a step behind. Although Hakim was a regular at Ezra’s household often joining them for meals, he kept his family at bay refusing to introduce them to each other. Hakim’s neighborhood was one that he would never venture into with Ezra for fear that they might stumble on an unwelcome coincidence. He was aware that Ezra was the fortunate one between them. While Hakim came from a broken family, constant beatings from his bad-tempered father and suffered a serious case of stutter, Ezra was enjoying a loving household and all the luxuries a loving father bestows upon his eldest child. Hakim was well aware of the differences and feared that someday Ezra would realize the truth. Hakim needed to feed off the admiration and couldn’t bare imagine a life where Ezra wouldn’t look up to him. Hakim would feel himself suffocate just thinking about it. “Worthless” and “cheap” were some words Hakim used to describe various gifts that Ezra would receive from his father. Soon enough, to Hakim’s satisfaction, those gifts would be discarded. The stronger the bond grew the more skillful Hakim had become in evading the truth about himself. The bruises and scars that marked his body were from altercations he had with other kids and not beatings from his father. The tent he slept in was not because he was kicked out of the house but because he loved camping and “living in the wild.” He ate like a starved person when invited to Ezra’s house because he loved their cooking and not because he had gone a few days without food. Underneath all the lies there was a strong love for Ezra. A love Hakim had become dependent on and was afraid to lose. But not all the fibs in the world could have protected their relationship from the disease that ate away at Ezra’s body. The cancer was swift and vengeful in invading Ezra’s body. It took everything but left the lies behind. The lies which would forever haunt Hakim’s life.

I

MY FRIEND THE DALAI LAMA

have a friend—let’s call her the Dalai Lama—who used to work at a very demanding corporation. Diligent and punctual, she almost never called in sick. Whenever she discovered that I had read a book or written an article or a poem at work, she would tell me how bad it made her feel. She complained that her job wasted all of her energy; that by the time she left the corporation, she could do nothing but sleep off the fatigue until the vicious cycle commenced again in the morning. I always felt sorry for her because my job wasn’t as hectic. So I wished her a better occupation, one that could at least afford her the time and vigor to experience life’s pleasures. After all, the thought of not being able to read a book or write in my spare time was incomprehensible to me. It was a life I did not wish upon my enemies. Well. I used to wish her that. I don’t anymore. The Dalai Lama quit work abruptly, before lining up alternatives. As if she had enough of real life, she stayed home all day expecting her parents to pay her car and phone bills. And did she read books? Write her stories? Or appreciate the finer things in life? No. She did absolutely nothing. She barely left the house and when she did, it was always late at night, after everyone had gone to bed. We used to tell each other every boring detail about our daily life. After quitting I was seldom able to speak to her. On rare occasions when I visited her house, her eyes were bloodshot red as if she had been up all night. I couldn’t figure out what she busied herself with. That’s when I thought that my friend had probably left work because she was addicted to drugs. “Are you OK?” I asked her once I sat down on the table. She had invited me over for dinner looking paler than I remember. Her hair was up in a bun, her pajamas were wrinkled, and her lips were chapped. “Yes of course. Why do you ask?” “No reason. It’s not as if you look like you’ve been kidnapped and beaten up and shaken until all your sanity had fallen out like pebbles from a jar.” Her eyebrows drew together, eyeing my suspiciously. “O-k-a-y” she said, stretching the word. “O-k-a-y” I mocked. “Nada. What’s wrong with you?” “What’s wrong with me? Me? I’m not the one who retired from public life! I’m not the one who’s sitting in my pajamas looking like I’ve been living in Plato’s cave for a year. Do you even know how to operate a touch screen? Or are you still stuck on Microsoft’s technology?” “Woah! Where’s all this coming from?” “I’m worried about you!” I erupted. “I’m fine.” A moment of awkward silence, almost as thick as Paris Hilton, shrouded us. I realized that I’d been huffing laboriously, so I took a deep breath, pushed my wild hair out of my face, and plunked back down on my chair. “Fine,” I said petulantly. 54 www.citypageskuwait.com

The Dalai Lama smiled. She filled my plate with food that she had made herself. “Just relax,” she coaxed, “and eat. After all, I made this for you.” “Fine.” I said again and forced myself to chew. Chunks of macaroni rolled tastelessly over my tongue as I looked at my dear friend whose life deteriorated in front of me. My imagination bounced in every direction; I painted the Dalai Lama as a trembling addict, homeless and banished, prowling Al-Bede’s street for enough coins or male digits to secure her next meal. I took another flavorless bite of food. “How’s Ammar?” she asked casually before sipping her apple-flavored Apollinaire. “Ammar?” “Your friend.” I blinked twice before I registered who she meant. Ammar was an old friend from school whom I had run into at the co-op two weeks earlier. Ammar was someone I hadn’t mentioned before, not because he was meant to be a secret, but because the Dalai Lama had been in her cave hemorrhaging life and humanity. I swallowed my food with difficultly. “You know Ammar?” “Not personally, no. Why? Was it meant to be a secret?”

FICTION / POETRY “Of course not.” “So what’s the problem?” “I’m just . . . I don’t know.” How did she find out I had run into a guy that she had never met and had never heard me mention before? “Nada?” “Yeah?” “You didn’t answer.” “What? Oh. Um. Yeah, he’s good.” “He’s good?” The pitch of her voice rose in the end like she was questioning my honesty. “Yes,” I said firmly. “When I met him two weeks ago he was good.” “Oh I see, it makes sense now. More pasta? No? Drinks? Dessert? What’s wrong Nada! Why are you looking at me like that?” “How do you know Ammar?” I flipped. My heart hammered. I didn’t know what I was accusing the Dalai Lama of and I didn’t know what I felt. Fear? “I told you I don’t know him.” “So why mention him in the first place?” “I was confused about something and I needed it to be clarified. Listen just forget about it. Let’s talk about something else.” “What? No! You need to tell me how you know him.” “But I don’t!” “So you picked the name randomly?” “No. I told you, I was confused about something.” “What?” “Huh?” “What were you confused about?” She stammered. “I . . . I wanted to know if he was the one who broke up with his Lebanese girlfriend, or if she was the one who dumped him. And” she bit her lower lip then said, “since he was fine when you met him, I know now that he was the one who did it. Otherwise, he would have been all sulky and miserable.” I was flabbergasted. How did she find out about Ammar’s breakup, especially since she had no prior knowledge of the man himself? “How in the world did you—” the Dalai Lama interrupted me before I completed my question. “I read tweets. All night. I’m . . . I’m a Twitter addict.” “A what?” “Once we stopped talking I thought the best way to keep track of what you do all day was to, you know, stalk your timeline. I then caught up with your following list and followers list and when Ammar followed you two weeks ago I read all his tweets. He used to flirt with Zeina all the time but they were no longer following one another by the time I followed him. I needed to know who broke up with whom. Now I know. More pasta?”

DEAR MS. ENGLISH TEACHER WHO WANTS ME TO CARE ABOUT POETRY I— I really don't want to be here. In fact, I'd rather be sitting where you are, So I could mock the shmuck standing here Pretending to be Shakespeare.

Let me put it this way: It's video games that understand me. They know how to advertise. They know how to attract me. I don't like them cause their bad for me; I like them cause they impact me!

Poetry? Really?

I get a rush of power when I sit and play for hours, Like an internal twister wreathing, Sometimes it leads to ecstasy, Sometimes it leads to seething, But it's fun Ms. English Teacher, It's nothing like your teaching. Zzz.

In this day and age when the rage is to communicate by text messages? When Bluetooth has become a fossil, You still get these apostles who wrestle and tussle, Pushing pools of poets full throttle? Like John Donne? Have you heard about John Donne? Well, I haven't. Cause guess what? He's DONE. So are Byron, Keats, and Shelly. No offence Ms. English Teacher, But I don't even care about R.Kelly. If truth be told, He's old, And last I heard, So was your poetry. Look, I don't want to cause any trouble. I'm sorry that I ain't bubbly, But haven't you read my recent tweets? They're not exactly funny. Yes, I'm depressed, Stressed, Pressed to impress, It's intense, My life's more than a mess. I just can't. It's a scant life I'm living, So just confess Ms. English Teacher without the random tests.

How about we reach a middle ground now? Or is your ego still reeling? I know I'm a smarty pants. But people tell me it's appealing. Come on, Admit it, You're sympathetic to my pleading, And your façade of severity is actually misleading, You do care how I feel, Or else you wouldn't be leading such a devoted way of living, Imparting knowledge and yielding. So Ms. English Teacher just hear the words that I'm pealing Like a banana skin from a brain ingrained with a bedlam of feelings: Don't tell me I should read a poem, Excite me, And I'll breathe it, Cause you know me, I'm your student Nada Faris and mark these words that I'm preaching, With your help, and my effort, It's my name you'll be teaching.

What's poetry going to do for me? Huh? What am I going to gain from this blame game we play daily? I know you want me to care more, But it's nowhere in me, And I don't want to offend you, But I can't fend you off me! Just leave me. Allow me to live freely. You think I don't have a home? You think I don't have a family? You think I don't wake up foaming from their levels of insanity? You think I like not caring? You think I enjoy apathy?

PSY’s Gangnam Style

Ever so often the world of music is blessed with a highly annoying or unexplainable hit that tops the charts for weeks. PSY’s Gangnam Style’ has received over 282 million views on YouTube but what is he on about?

Gangnam Style is the comeback song from PSY who has a two year break. This song comes complete with a rodeo type dance that the artist also too invented what a guy?!The fact still remains a lot of us are still confused with what he’s on about, the video draws no evidence to what it could mean but seeing all those sexy ladies YouTube video responses to the song, it does seem sexual. Maybe? The good old Urban Dictionary‘s definition says:

“Gangnam Style is a Korean neologism mainly associated with upscale fashion and lavish lifestyle associated with trendsetters in Seoul’s Gangnam district, which is considered the most affluent part of the metropolitan area. In colloquial usage, it is comparable to the English slang terms “Swag” or “yolo”.

We also got to know that Gangnam means “south (nam) of the river (gang)”in Korean, it penetrates the City of Seoul, capital of South Korea. The northern part of Seoul (gangbuk)has been the capital of Korea since the early 15th century. Development of Gangnam and expansion of Seoul started in 1970’s. Gangnam is the icon of the rapid economic development of South Korea in 1970s and 80s. Mostly benefited from skyrocking real estate price followed by planned economic development, Gangnam has become the most wealthy area in the entire South Korea.

“Gangnam”is being regarded as the place where people are rich, girls are pretty and everything is supposed to be cool. Well even after the historical info, the song still sounds naughty.

Unmistakably an Aston Martin, the design shows a clear and coherent lineage from its heritage while providing an equally clear pointer to the luxury car brand’s vibrant future. Closer inspection reveals details such as the stunning new Aero Duct on the rear boot lid. This elegantly devised passive engineering feature, which counteracts lift at the car’s rear when travelling at speed, is a triumph of both design and technical ability.

MOTOR Performance, presence, style and great British craftsmanship – the new Vanquish has all these traits in abundance. Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “Today’s Vanquish is the ultimate expression of Aston Martin design ethos, engineering innovation and technical ability. It offers luxurious, continentcrossing capability and pure driving excitement without compromise. “Bearing the same name as the iconic original Vanquish that did so much to cement Aston Martin’s reputation as a maker of great GT cars in the modern era, I believe the car unveiled today once again puts this great British brand at the top of its class. “The new Vanquish mixes beautiful design with impressive technology such as the superb new infotainment system. This is the latest incarnation of everything we know, informed and developed from One-77. It is the ultimate Super Grand Tourer – confident and assured – and is the newest representation of Power, Beauty and Soul.” As happy on the streets of a bustling city as it is carving through the countryside or long distance motorway touring, the Vanquish offers a thoroughbred British luxury sports

towards economy and emissions improvements, too. The latest engineering methods, innovative technologies and typically understated classic British design come together to make the muscular new Vanquish a true super GT. For instance, each body panel on the car is constructed from carbon fibre because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and flexibility of form. Meanwhile torsional rigidity is improved by more than 25%. Practical improvements such as a newly designed and significantly more spacious cabin and a boot that, at 368 litres, is more than 60% larger than that of the DBS, ensure the new Vanquish can carry sufficient luggage for even the most ambitious grand tourist. Designed and hand-built at Aston Martin’s global headquarters at Gaydon in Warwickshire the new Vanquish, available as a 2+2 or 2+0, sits atop a broad line-up of world-class sports cars including the exquisite DB9, sporty V8 Vantage and luxurious four-door Rapide. Dr Bez said: “The Aston Martin range is stronger now than at any time in our 99-year history. The new Vanquish represents the perfect way to signal the beginning of our centenary celebrations next year.”

car that’s also suited to everyday use. Powered by a significantly revised naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine mated to the proven Touchtronic 2 six-speed automatic gearbox, the new car offers suitably impressive performance figures. The V12’s power peak of 565 bhp (573 PS) makes it Aston Martin’s most potent production model yet, outmuscled only by the strictly limited edition £1.2m One-77 supercar. The raw statistics speak for themselves: 573 PS at 6,750 rpm, 620 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm, 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 183 mph place the Vanquish firmly into supercar territory. INTERVIEW

The Glambassador of Design A prolific and accomplished jewelry designer, whose pieces have been flaunted by some notable names in the movie industry. Sophie Harley has created a range of unique and brilliant jewelry pieces embedded with a personalized touch and shaped to reflect her creativity. She established a successful business Sophie Harley Design that helps produce her imaginative pieces incorporating flamboyant materials that make a statement to her name. Every facet of her business is tailored to creating a pleasant and exciting experience for her clients. The strength of her artistry has stirred a love and respect for her designs, raising quite a fan following. CityPages was lucky enough to talk to this vivacious designer about her life’s work. Please introduce yourself to our readers?

philosophical symbols and flying heart signify?

My name is Sophie Harley. I’m a jewellery designer, working from my studio with my team in Central London. I create jewelry made entirely of precious metals and stones. I have been running my business Sophie Harley Design for the last 23 years

Due to my drawing skills and background, my work has always had a highly illustrative aspect to it. I love to tell stories and use cross cultural and historical motifs in my work. I have spent many hours drawing various ancient objects in museums from around the world. My sketch books are the central core to my work, the heart of all of my jewellery pieces. Nearly all of my work carries some symbolism - all with a positive energy the heart of course stands for love and the wings are symbols of hope and liberation. Other symbols such as the dragonfly signify the spirit of transformation. These are often universal symbols, which is why my work appeals to a worldwide audience, I believe.

Tell us about your education? I went to Bryanston School (boarding) in Dorset, England , leaving with 9 GCSE’s and 4 A levels. After that I completed a BA (Hons) Degree in 3 Dimensional at West Surrey College of Art & Design, followed by a Master’s Degree in Goldsmithing at The Royal College of Art, Kensington, London, graduating with an MA in jewelry design from The Royal College of Art in 1989 .

What triggered your interest in jewelry design? As a child I was always drawing, painting and making things. My parents – though both came from backgrounds in Medicine - were very supportive. I even had my own little studio with paint tools in the spare room. At school too, I was known as the ‘class artist ‘, relied upon to knock up a Roman mosaic out of sweet wrappers at the last minute for assembly or whatever. My grandmother had a beautiful gold charm bracelet studded with precious stones, and other jewellery from her childhood in Turkey. My great grandparents helped build and manage the Ottoman – Ionian railway across Turkey at the turn of the last Century. I was fascinated by these beautiful pieces and the history that they represented. From a very early age, I never had any doubts that I’d end up doing something artistic with my life.

Why do you use your hands to make your designs rather than other available tools? Drawing has always been my first love, and nothing is more directly ‘hands on‘ than that …so I think it was natural for me to extend my drawings into 3 dimensions, using my hands as tools so to speak. In my view, jewellery tools are similar to pencil, ink and paint; in the way you create so directly with them, but using metal instead of paper.

Why does your style using ancient and 64 www.citypageskuwait.com

Please explain your design process? The process itself can vary depending on whether it’s a one off special commission for a private client or a new collection. For a private client , it will always start with an in depth consultation regarding who the piece is for and for what occasion, budget is important too , as it will affect the materials and stones used. Then, of course, I will sketch ideas during the conversation and go on to create a more detailed drawing before proceeding forward. Collections often spring from ideas that I already have in my head or sometimes even from drawings, which I may have done from years ago but haven’t developed. I’m a visual person, so almost anything can trigger a creative idea, some days I will work immediately in metal without first drawing if I’m feeling impatient!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Years of drawings in my sketchbooks, my travels, philosophy, ancient objects and artifacts seen in museums, sometimes just the color of a beautiful stone can inspire me, or even a line from a song. Of course, I am sometimes inspired by the people I meet around the world, but importantly, I like my jewellery to tell a personal story.

How often do you come up with a new collection? It can vary, a collection can develop over many years such as ‘Cult Classics‘ (a culmination of my original work and favorite pieces from the last 20 years) to ‘Brilliana‘ (my latest collection using bright colorful stones set mainly in 18 carat yellow gold ) , inspired by my wonderful ancestor , Lady Brilliana Harley , a 17th Century English heroine. There are now 13 separate collections on the website, and I’m constantly creating new bespoke pieces for my private clients.

Describe your design studio? We have a beautiful studio which is divided into three main areas; a management area for the handling of business operations like paperwork and shipping orders, a working area equipped with jeweller’s benches where we create our product and a showroom/client consultation area where we showcase jewellery from all of the collections. The third area is glammed up with Venetian mirrors, a pink velvet settee and beautiful model shots. Clients can enjoy trying on the jewellery and taking part in the design process with me. It’s a very intimate experience; unlike being in a public shop,

INTERVIEW it’s much more private and exclusive for clients. I have a fabulous team here in the studio, and people come from all over the world to visit us.

Tell us of the awards and achievements you have earned? I’ve been involved in many fantastic projects over the years, including designing a major prize for the Diamond Day race at Royal Ascot, De Beers diamonds commissioned a beautiful winged horse brooch in 18 carat white and yellow gold diamonds and it was presented to the trainer of the winning horse by HRH Queen Elizabeth II. I’ve also designed jewellery for Mappin & Webb, Boodles and the World Gold Council. My greatest film work achievement has to be the Algerian Love knot necklace which was worn by the lovely Eva Green in the James Bond movies ‘Casino Royale ‘ and ‘Quantum of solace ‘. This particular piece captured the hearts of a worldwide audience and is undoubtedly my most famous piece of jewellery to date. I have also made jewellery for other movies, including for the actors Colin Firth and Mena Suvari.

I would say that 18 carat yellow and 22 carat gold are amazing to work with for I love their color. Precious stones are heavenly; I particularly like cognac colored diamonds as well as aquamarine and deep red rubies.

From where can someone purchase your jewellery? Apart from the website, www.sophieharley.com (we ship to anywhere in the world ), and our studio, most of our stockists are currently in the U.K ( please see ‘stockist’s on the website).

What advice would you give aspiring jewellery designers? Be tenacious and talented! You’ve got to love what you do to succeed if you intend to be in it for the long haul.

If you were not a jewelry designer, who would you be? I’ve dabbled in a bit of TV presenting in the past and really enjoyed it, but ultimately, I would have to be doing something more creative, maybe returning to my roots as a fine artist. I can’t really imagine not designing jewellery at all!

Tell us one unique feature of your jewellery? It comes from the heart - is designed from scratch with each piece you get a little bit of me.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? Enjoy your jewellery and please come and visit us in our London studio or do get in touch with us through the website or my business Facebook page, Sophie Harley Design.

What are your future plans for expansion? I’m interested in collaborating with other fashion designers, but we also plan to extend our worldwide stockists, and we have recently spent nearly a year on improving our E-tail site. I’d love to expand into the Middle Eastern market too; I have great friends in Bahrain and have enjoyed spending time there in the last ten years. I would like to continue to expand our existing private client base, especially our in-house bespoke and ‘up-cycling’ jewellery design service. I’m also designing a more complete wedding jewellery and engagement ring collection in 18 carat gold and diamond that will be available in both shops and our official website.

Why did you decide to start designing jewellery for men? It only seemed fair to design for men too, as I have such a wide range for women. I found that more and more men are interested in wearing not only cufflinks and rings, but necklaces and bracelets as well. I’ve been designing more interesting wedding bands for men.

Who are some of your other famous customers? Well, most recently, Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. I’ve also made jewellery that has been featured in pop videos for Bryan Ferry, Enya and Prince’s dancer Cat !

Where all have you travelled for jewellery shows? I personally have been to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, Barcelona, Mallorca, Ibiza, South Africa and Bahrain.

What are some of your favorite materials used in your jewellery?

Horoscopes & Famous Birthdays

It's business time! October opens with the Sun, Mercury, and Saturn in do-it-my-way Libra. On October 5, Saturn moves into Scorpio, enhancing his fierce resolve to getting the job done. Among Saturn's gifts are discipline and a deep sense of purpose and he's here to stay for a couple years. On October 15 a New Moon in Libra intensifies your drive and with the bolstering of Saturn no one stands in the way of your determination! Two other days that are infused with ambition are October 22 when the Sun adds passion to your main project of the moment, and October 28 when Venus intensifies leadership abilities. The month ends with a Full Moon on October 29 in the money-minded Taurus... it could be time for a financial reward.

ARIES

Several planets in your sign will make this a memorable month. You'll feel confident, strong, and curious. You'll start new projects and have a fresh attitude. One of the planets is Saturn, however, so be cautious before jumping into anything. A New Moon in Libra on October 15 will bring out your natural talents and qualities. You'll be happy and focused on building your relationships for about a month. However, Uranus in Aries will bring a streak of independence and a desire for freedom. You'll have to balance your own interests with a need to please others.

There's a strong focus on being cooperative, supportive, and polite this month, but you could have difficulty turning your attention to getting along with others. Uranus is still in your sign, giving you a willful and independent spirit. You won't care what other people think, and you may act erratically. You could be involved in a passionate love affair at the start of the month, but it may not last unless you're willing to make a commitment.
