Dear Readers,

My Dear Readers, Here we are, meeting you again at the end of a beautiful and fruitful year, heralding 2013 with CityPages’ fresh new look that you are all going to love! I was thinking over the art of living and it occurred to me, what if we imagine that we are similar to doors, somehow! We have our own key, not just any random key which can open our locks, but a special custom-made one. Some keys can lock us inside ourselves completely while some can unlock us in a way that makes us more sociable. We can be open to welcoming anyone wishing to enter through, by using the right key, the custom-made one! However, you can never use the same key to all different doors; no matter how hard you try - it will never ever open! So make your life easy and use the right key for the right person, no all-opening Master key exists! Standing complacent is not going to open any doors either. Believe it or not, I really do believe in this.... Let's start our year with an open and understanding mind. Enjoy our upcoming year in cheerful spirit! Wishing you a heartwarming December, filled with cookies, quality time with loved ones as you celebrate the Season’s joyful traditions!

Welcome to chilly and not so chilly December. This month witnessed a drop in temperature, and a rise as well. Its woolies one day, t-shirts the next and this is winter rolls into Kuwait. We are so pleased to feature a host of exciting personalities in this month’s edition, ranging from home grown super talented singer songwriter guitaritstZakariaMousawi on the cover, to Dr. Hani AlSaffar our rock start dentist from Asnan clinic all the way to a quicker than ever although exclusive interview with Kim Kardashian herself, whom I have to say I hit it off with. She really is a nice person after all! Our highlight of the month was attending the Millions of Milkshakes grand opening event which was so action packed we regretted not wearing padded jackets. It was overwhelming and quite stimulating in comparison to most events that take place in Kuwait. We took along Abdul Aziz Al Shayji our newest member of the team to photograph Kim, and I have to say he did a fantastic job! You can catch the photos inside this edition. We also headed out to K’S Path’s Bark in the Park event where we sat down with Fatimah Al Sabah to chat with her about the ever-growing popularity of this event. Finally read up on Aruna Seth the talented shoe designer, I’m not sure how our Chief managed to land her for this interview, go Jameel! Don’t forget to catch some laughs at the Comedy Hangout taking place at the Safir International this December 20, details are inside. There’s plenty more in this December issue of CP, enjoy!

How To Jump-Start Your Child’s Academic Success Today! December is here, and to many parents that means end of term, also known as exam time. Academic success to many parents is a top priority, and its no surprise. Academic success impacts our children for the rest of their lives; it impacts their self-esteem, college selections, job success, financial achievement, and even their choice of spouses. With all of that, it’s no surprise that we go to great lengths to ensure our children’s success. But are we over looking some obvious steps to aid in our children’s success? We probably are! Here are 7 steps to help you out. 7 magic steps to ensure your child’s success:

1. Ensure your child gets enough sleep. In a recent study, researchers found that missing just one hour of sleep one night, can be enough to reduce a child’s cognitive abilities by almost two years the next day. What that means is if a sixth grader who did not get enough sleep the night before a big test, he/ she could end up performing at a fourth grade level. Shocking isn’t it? So what can you do to help your child get enough sleep every night? a. Set a bed time routine and stick to it, even on the weekends b. Flashing images from TV, video games and smart phones can affect a child’s sleep so make sure they are turned off 30 minutes before bedtime. c. Watch out for caffeinated drinks, such as energy drinks. d. Take away cell phones during nighttime; 62% of kids admit they use their phones after lights are out.

2. Celebrate efforts the right way. Researchers

at Columbia University found that how we praise our kid’s school work has a direct effect on their achievement. What this means is instead of encouraging your child to get all straight A’s, place the emphasis on how hard she is working. This will encourage her to keep trying and working hard and it will keep her motivated to learn. Kids who are praised for their persistence are more likely to attribute any failure on not having tried hard enough, as opposed to a lack of ability. Simply put, if a child believes that his abilities are somehow lacking, he will be discouraged and turned off learning almost immediately, which is definitely not where you want your child to be heading.

3. Respect their learning style. Every child has

a different style when it comes to how they study and learn. Some like to listen to some music, others want to use flashcards, whatever your child’s studying style is, respect it. What you need to be doing, as a parent is to pay attention to how your kid learns best and then encourage him to use it to ensure his

success. For example, if your child is a visual learner, encourage her to draw or create a mind-map next time she is studying.

4. Pay attention to their peers. We all know about negative peer pressure, but the flip side to peer pressure is that there is positive peer pressure. If your child’s friends place a great importance on school achievement and learning, chances are, so will your child. Also there is a correlation between choosing the right friends and a child’s relationship with his parents. A recent study published by Ohio State University found that kids are more likely to have friends with future college plans, if they have a warm, positive relationship with their parents! So now you have more reason to ensure that you and your spouse have a warm a nurturing relationship with your kids!

5. Make family meals a MUST. A recent study by Columbia University found that kids whose families eat regular, relaxed meals together are not only less likely to abuse drugs, alcohol and develop eating disorders, but they are also more likely to achieve higher grades. I know that with everyone’s busy schedule now, it is hard to sit together for a meal; so play around your schedule. It doesn't always have to be a proper meal, may be some days you can meet for a quick snack all together before bed time. And moms, do not put your self under pressure of having to cook a gourmet, six-course meal; just serve simple, healthy meals, turn off the TV, switch off your phones and simply enjoy each other’s company. Its not the food that is served that will help your child perform better at school, but its those informal conversations and questions like “How was your day?” “What was the highlight of your day?” “What are you discussing in science class?” “How do you plan to study for that test?” that will aid your child in prioritizing her education.

do yoga, or have a family movie night. Our children learn more from our actions rather than lecturing them in an attempt to teach them. Another source of yelling could be between you and your spouse over a certain issue, so next time you have a disagreement model to your child that you can disagree without having it end in a screaming match. Call a time out, walk away and revisit the issue when you are calm and collected. Also remember to tune into your child’s stress signs, so next time your child is stressed out, you can help him identify his own triggers and help him to decompress.

7. Tailor your expectations to your child’s abilities. We all want the best for our kids, its second nature to all parents! But we need to remember that every child is different; and while it is all right to encourage your child to try hard and achieve her best, it is also important to remember that what is best is different for every child. Adapt your parenting and expectations to your child and his abilities; your child will not only be happier and healthier this way, but also more successful.

Lastly, remember that boosting your child’s academic performance will take a few things from you. You as a parent will need to be consistent, dedicated and PATIENT. Also, you will need to form a partnership with your child’s teacher. If you and the teacher are on the same page, the better the academic outcome of your child. Also remember, that no two kids are a like, even if they come from the same house and to the same parents. Pay attention to each child’s individual needs and do what is right for them and you, you will see the affect in their attitudes and their report cards in no time.

6. Make your home a stress-free zone.

Research shows that family-induced stress can affect a kid’s learning and behavior for up to two days after an incident occurs at home. So next time you feel like yelling at home, take a deep breath and rethink your actions. Other ways to help you cultivate a stress-free environment at home and within your family is to take long walks together, read together,

Aiming high Habib Koya Marapatta started small in India and learnt early on the values of hard work and dedication. His move to Kuwait gave him the opportunity to rise to become a productive head in a major company, Hussein Morad Behbehani Est., where he motivates a strong team of individuals to be innovative and creative. His story is truly inspiring as is his message that adversities can be overcome to realize one’s true potential. CityPages sat down with the General Manager to listen to his thought-provoking advice.

Tell us about your educational background? I studied in India where I finished my education in Hotel Management. I did an MBA course from IIME-Indian Institute of Management & Engineering.

stores to make sure that the standards and image is maintained as these are the keys to success. .

What are the different brands that you handle in the company Can you please describe your career path leading you to your current role? My career list is very long; I didn’t wake up one day to become the Commercial General Manger of a company. I worked myself up little by little. Whoever jumps too fast in his career steps is bound to fall as they have not experienced the hardship and knowledge that each step provides. Like most people, I started my career as a very young boy in India, working as a store staff in Pizza Hut. It was through my hard work that I achieved the position of store manager. Coming to Kuwait, I continued my path in development and I worked hard for 12 years until 2009, where I got the opportunity to lead the new development team of Costa Coffee to success. Shortly thereafter, I got the opportunity to become the Commercial General Manager for Hussein Morad Behbehani Est. I earned this position with the hard work and support of my team and of course, through the confidence that Mr. Behbehani had in my ability to lead and develop the brands under the Establishment’s umbrella.

What does your current role as the Commercial General Manager at Hussein Morad Behbehani Est. entail? As Commercial General Manager, I’m the guardian of the Establishment and my job is to make sure that the daily business runs smoothly through daily contact with the appointed managers for each of the brands. I also develop the Establishment by looking at new franchise opportunities out in the World. I look into the details of each brand through spot checks in my boutiques and www.citypageskuwait.com

Hussein Morad Behbehani Est. only franchises the best of the best. We are currently overseeing the following: House of Van Cleef and Arpels, Bulgari and the No 1 coffee chain, Costa Coffee.

What are some of the challenges you have to face in your current role? Beside the daily challenges of running 27 Costa stores and 2 boutiques, we find it a bit challenging to deal with the quick changes in rules and regulations of the different Ministries. Today, this rule applies, and the next day we are shocked that the rule has changed. On the business side, one of the challenges is the upkeep of the image and the brand standard. Each of the Brands are different and it is very important to be able to handle each one in a good way. Each one has a different approach and the challenge is not to mix the strategy of one brand with the other.

What are your three keys to success according to you? In any business if there is no team work, you will never succeed. Secondly, it’s all about the leadership and the approach that the leader has towards the business. Lastly, never let failure pull you down, so confidence in your way of working and in your team will lead you to success. This is how I lead my Establishment towards success and til now, the numbers are reflecting a positive result. Secondly, it is all about leadership and approach towards the business.

What according to you is your biggest achievement I have to say that the Establishment’s biggest achievement is taking the market share by storm in a very short span of time. My biggest achievement is finding and hiring the best team.

Who inspires you? I’m not saying this simply because he is my boss, but Mr Behbehani’s courage is an inspiration for me. He sees potential in every person and he believes in giving opportunities for people to prove themselves. Regardless of your educational background or experience, he looks for potential in every person. He had the confidence in me even though I did not have any previous experience as a General Manager. He saw the passion and dedication I exhibited. I’m also inspired by all the great men of the world such as Mahatma Ghandi.

What are some of your hobbies? Thanks to my position, I have the privilege to mix my hobby with my work and that is travelling. I love seeing different cultures, walking in new cities and exploring history. My job offers me the luxury to go to places and see the things I love, and at the same time perform my work duty. My second passion in life is public speaking! I get a rush when I’m on a stage - inspiring, guiding and enlightening people. Any chance I get to speak publicly - I take it and make sure that all my listeners’ leave with original ideas they did not have before walking in.

What are some of your future plans for the company? Continue on the growth plan we have structured for all the brands and of course, adding to our umbrella - new and high-end brands that will add to the image of the Establishment, which will help us attain more market share.

Are there any new brands planned to be introduced by your company? Of course, as a reputed establishment we get calls daily for franchisee opportunity and we study all applicants carefully before we take any decision. We are always on the lookout for brands that will be a good addition to our well-known brand portfolio and once we find a suitable one, we will not hesitate to grab it.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? Anybody can succeed in life; it only takes one person’s belief in you. I would also like to encourage all the readers to work hard and passionately and one day your reward will come. Know where you want to go and put a small note in a place where you often see it. It will make you work hard to reach that set goal. This is what I have done with my team: the day they joined they pinned on a board the place where they see themselves three years from now. The board was framed and placed in my office. I take it with me sometimes to the meetings to let them see their dreams and understand how close they are to reaching that dream. Do your own board and work towards your goal, you can do it!!!!

CityPages Team goes Food Tasting The Gathering Bistro CityPages introduces to its readers a new Food Tasting experiment. The team will be visiting hot places in Kuwait and giving their individual opinion. The CityPages team visited The Gathering Bistro, a restaurant/cafe that received good reviews for its food and remarkable setting in Salhiya area. It is owned by two friends, Yousef Al-Saad and Fahad Al-Fulaij, both graduates from Kuwait University. The restaurant has a very upbeat exterior and interior, intentionally meant to resemble a quaint bazaar. It created quite a relaxing ambience. The team had a tête-à-tête with the owners on their concept and ideas. They eagerly explained that their entry into the food business in Kuwait looked to be a very promising endeavor. However, it was tough as the competition is fierce, and many excellent restaurants are already very visible. www.citypageskuwait.com

Fahad had this to say about their special restaurant/cafÊ‌So, the idea behind The Gathering Bistro was to open something in between a cafe and a restaurant as there was a vacuum in this sector. Usually, when you have a group of friends, some want to go out for just coffee or desserts and some want to go for full lunch or dinner. No place existed to entertain both. So, we called ourselves a Bistro which is somewhere between a cafe and a restaurant. December 2012

Food/Review

The name ‘Gathering’ was selected as we gather for many reasons and at different places. We selected the Bazaar theme and hired a professional branding company to develop the whole concept around it.

Now for the thrilling part, the CityPages team gets to share their thoughts on the cooking…

As we did not have much background in food business operation, which was a challenge in the beginning but we knew what we wanted and had the sense of good food and taste. We sought out the help of Chef Adla Al Sarhan, a well-known and popular chef to assist in creating a great menu. The rest was accomplished by our own Chef, who did a great job. We used to give him our ideas for an item on the menu, and he prepared the finished result.

The verdict:

When asked about their menu, they said, “Our menu is a fusion. We do not serve any one particular food. You like to see a big variety in our menu. We do not wanted to be associated with any one particular kind of food or theme. That was the concept and that is why even our name - The Gathering - does not connect to any one particular kind of food or country. We would like it to be a place where you can find a unique atmosphere and relish different kinds of foods.” “Today, although it is taking lots of our time, but we enjoy the experience and are excited about meeting our customers to ask for their feedback and advice on improvement.” He added, “We believed that in the beginning, we will work full time as the Bistro is still in the initial-launch period, and currently, we serve lunch and dinner only from 12 noon to 11 pm. Future plans include offering breakfast and a bigger menu.”

7 natural ways to fight the cold and flu Well the holiday season is about to begin again. The holiday season is a time we all look forward to. It is also a time of the year when even the most unobservant person can’t fail to notice the sudden outbreak of cold and flu-like symptoms. Let’s chew on this for a moment. For a few weeks in the year we bombard our systems with just about every delectable and delicious substance that meets the eye. This sudden and unnatural overload of food causes a build-up of toxins in the system which must be expelled. Later, when we begin to experience those cold and flu-like symptoms, we make no obvious connection to our feasting festivities or the combined stress and the bone chilling cold from the winter days. We hear it in the office and on the street “There’s a bug going around and I guess it had my name on it.” A bug? really? The human body is an exquisite mechanism; it strives always to maintain a natural balance. So given this heavy and intense onslaught of food and stress wouldn’t it make sense for the body to make every effort to redress this critical balance? The symptoms of this re-dressing activity in the body are also the classic symptoms of colds and flu. Sneezing, sweating, coughing and fever, are just some of the ways in which the body expels toxins. Are we more susceptible to viruses at this time? I would say yes, given that our body’s resources are being stretched to the limit while it struggles to regain its equilibrium. Are there other factors that contribute to this lowering of our natural defenses? What can we do to help our wonderful bodies fight the good fight? Well, here are 7 natural ways to help beat the cold and flu this season:

1) Reduce Stress Stress is the number one culprit in exacerbating any disease and when it comes to colds and flu it is usually a contributing factor. high stress results in constant secretion of cortisol - a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. high cortisol inhibits white blood cell formation and function. White blood cells destroy organisms, clean up damaged cells and initiate the repair process. Stress depletes your nutrients and compromises your immune system which in turn can make you vulnerable to colds and flu. If you handle it properly and take all the nutrients you need, it doesn’t have to physically bring you down.

2) Laughter Laughter increases oxygenation of your body at both the cellular and organ level. By laughing, you intake vast amounts of oxygen in huge gulps, and you repeat this process in a sort of temporary hyperventilation session. This is the natural result of laughter. So why is laughter so important in preventing colds and flu? Because viruses cannot grow in an oxygen rich environment. Laughter also reduces the level of stress hormones and increases the level of healthenhancing hormones like endorphins, and neurotransmitters. Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T cells. All

this means a stronger immune system, and a lesser chance of catching the cold or flu.

3)Sleep & Rest Numerous studies have shown that potent immune activators are released and many immune functions are greatly increased during deep sleep.

4)Chicken soup Chicken soup has been shown to be an effective cold remedy. It contains cysteine, an amino acid which thins the mucus in the lungs, and has been shown in studies to increase air flow through the respiratory passages. Adding garlic, onions, red pepper or hot spices to your chicken soup adds to its effectiveness.

5)Liquids Dehydration of the respiratory tract has been shown to produce a much more hospitable environment to viruses than a moist environment. having plenty of liquids helps prevent this dehydration and also improves white blood cell function.

6)Antioxidants Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage

caused by free radicals. This damage plays a part in a number of chronic diseases, including colds, flu, and other infections. Free radicals can also interfere with your immune system. So fighting off damage with antioxidants helps keep your immune system strong. The three major antioxidant vitamins are beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E. You’ll find them in colorful fruits and vegetables – especially those with purple, blue, red, orange, and yellow hues.

7)Wash Your Hands If someone around you has a cold or the flu and forgets to wash their hands you could be the next one in line sniffling, coughing and sneezing. personal hygiene is something many people often overlook and every day our hands are exposed to many contaminated surfaces. We touch our faces almost unconsciously many times during the day and if we’ve shaken hands with someone or touched items that have been handled by others we can introduce harmful bacteria into our bodies through the eyes, nose, and mouth. regular hand washing in warm soapy water can quickly wash the germs away and using an antibacterial soap is even more effective. Also, try to sneeze or cough into a tissue or arm, because sneezing or coughing in your hand is the quickest way to pass on germs. December 2012

With the New Science of Weight Control© Continuing With Let’s Make A Diet! Let’s Continue to Learn to Talk the Talk by Understanding the Words Remember, if the vocabulary is wrong, the diet can never be right. Definition #8 True whole grains are grains in their naturalunprocessed state (the way they are found in the farmer’s field). True whole grains are fully unprocessed carbohydrate (the good guys). Grains have a naturally tough outer package, called bran, that is made of a hard layer of protein, vitamins and insoluble fiber. This hard outer coat is removed by milling. The inner portion of the grain is made up of starch (sugars bound together in branched chains). After milling, the grain is further ground into fine particles. The bran packaging, when not disrupted by milling, slows digestion and absorption of the inner starch. This slower digestion and absorption prevents the exaggerated insulin response that causes abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and associated diseases. Unfortunately we do not eat grains in their natural state. We only eat them after they have been processed by both milling and grinding, thereby converting them into processed carbohydrate (bad guys). Processing not only disrupts and removes the tough outer package containing most of the nutritional value, but it also breaks the starch into very small fragments, allowing more rapid digestion and absorption of the sugar molecules that make up the starch. Regrettably all of the so-called whole grain foods (breads, chips and cereals) are made from processed grains that have been milled and finely ground. These products, mislabeled as whole grains, only tell us that the product includes some or all of the now finely ground up outer bran shell and or germ. In other words, they mill away the bran and germ, grind the inner starch into very fine powder, and then add back a bit of bran and germ so that they can call the product whole grain!

Science Based Fact Most all products labeled as whole grain are in fact very processed carbohydrate. (Remember, by law unprocessed food do not require a label) Retaining or adding back the milled outer fibrous bran coating and germ does add nutritional value in the form of B vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein, but does nothing to prevent rapid absorption, excessive insulin response, abdominal obesity and disease! The excessive insulin response of milled and ground processed grains causes the ingested starch to be rapidly converted into fats, called triglycerides, which are preferentially stored in the inter-abdominal cavity. Repeated ingestion of this phony whole grain, which in fact is really processed carbohydrate, is a dietary roller coaster leading to: • Abdominal obesity • Insulin resistance • Resultant hypertension • Strokes • Heart disease • Adult onset diabetes • Generalized artery disease • Many cancers

bran and germ. The bleaching and separation process results in a processed carbohydrate without vitamins or minerals, a truly empty calorie food. Did you know that rats and mice are too smart to eat white flour? This is why it was invented, so it could be shipped onrat infested ships without fear that the rodents would eat the precious flour!

Science Based Fact For the purposes of weight control, ingestion of a bagel, because it is made from processed grain, is equivalent to eating a donut, even a so-called whole grain bagel! Judith, a 38 year old personal trainer, asked, “Dr. Green, I just can’t figure out why I am gaining weight. All I have for breakfast is a bowl of whole grain cereal with milk, for lunch a whole grain bagel with cream cheese, and for dinner whole grain pasta with low fat sauce! I’ve read that whole grains are good for you. They are, aren’t they?” Remember, grains are unprocessed carbohydrates (good guys) for weight control purposes only if they are in their natural state and have not been processed by milling and grinding. Grains made into flour and thence into bread, pasta, cereal etc. are really highly processed carbohydrate, which is, ounce for ounce, physiologically equivalent to sugar or jelly donut.

Science Based Fact Carbohydrates, both processed and unprocessed, contain 4 calories per gram. Fats contain 9 calories per gram. Proteins contain 4 calories per gram. Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. We see that an ounce of carbohydrate or protein would equal about 124 calories, whereas an ounce of fat would equal a whopping 279 calories. One tablespoon of fat/ oil @ 9 calories/gram equals more than two tablespoons of pure sugar!

Science Based Fact As far as weight loss or weight maintenance is concerned, science-based evidence tells us that all calories are not equal. This is so, because fat and processed carbohydrate calories, once eaten, are almost always converted into triglycerides and stored as body fat, whereas, protein, or truly unprocessed carbohydrate calories, are almost never converted to triglycerides, or stored as fat.

Science Based Fact The scientific definition of fat/oil is complicated and therefore not useful for purposes of dieting for weight loss or weight control. In general, lipids include all fats and oils. Fats are lipids that are usually solid at room temperature (about 20 degrees C.) Most fats contain a large percent of saturated fats. Oils are lipids that are usually liquid at room temperature. Most oils contain a small percentage of unsaturated fats. Usually the terms fats and oils are used interchangeably. Quite simply fats are solid at room temperature, and oils are liquid at room temperature.

Definition #10 Saturated oils are oils that are solid at room temperature.

• Early death!

Saturated oils are found: • In meats, dairy, palm oil and coconut oil

Definition #9

• Cause elevations in LDL (the bad cholesterol)

White flour is processed grain that has been bleached and separated from its www.citypageskuwait.com

• Are associated with heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and premature

Definition #11 Unsaturated oils are liquid at room temperature.

artery disease. A cautionary note;all oils are processed foods and can cause obesity. Why? They are very dense in calories. There are 9 calories/gram in oil vs. 4 calories/gram in carbohydrate, and 7-calories/gram in alcohol.

Unsaturated oils are found: • In vegetables and nuts • Do not elevate LDL cholesterol • Are heart healthy • Are not associated with disease and premature death.

Oil in the diet is unavoidable. For example, 14% of the total calories in lettuce come from oil.

Unsaturated fats are also further classified as: • Mono-unsaturated • Poly-unsaturated.

Processed carbohydrates stimulate hunger!

However, this is only true if the body has been on a very low carbohydrate program for at least 36 to 48 hours. Therefore, one cannot eat all the fat one wants during a single meal that is devoid of carbohydrate and expect the fat/oil not to be absorbed and stored. It is easy to get the idea that fats/oils in any amount are harmful. But recall that we need some dietary oils in moderation for health. We especially need the essential OMEGA 3, 6 and 9 oils, and the oil soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Quick Summary for your review: Good oils are the Omega oils. As a class they produce eicosanoids that actually prevent artery disease.

Therefore, do not worry about not getting enough oil in the diet. Practically speaking, it’s impossible to ingest too little oil. One exception perhaps is in the case of alcoholics who derive all their calories from beer, wine and spirits. Why do you think restaurants give away bread? Because bread is sugar by another name, and will stimulate hunger. Remember, processed carbohydrates push the wrong hormonal buttons. Ironically, oils actually decrease hunger! But, one must keep in mind that oils are a major cause of the world wide obesity epidemic. Oils definitely do cause disease if eaten in excess; therefore, oils are a very dangerous button to push. The less saturated the oil the better it is for the prevention of artery disease. But remember, it still contains 2 ½ times the calorie, gram for gram, as pure sugar. Therefore, even though unsaturated oil is good for the arteries, it nevertheless can and will contribute to obesity.

Definition #13 Essential fats, Linoleic and Linolenic cannot be synthesized in the body. Linoleic, also called Omega 6, is found in vegetables, such as corn. Linolenic, also called Omega 3, is found in deep water fish, egg yolks, flax seed and canola oils. Omega 3 oils are associated with the elevation of HDL cholesterol (good guys) and the reduction of heart disease, strokes, and high blood pressure. Science-based evidence tells us that the more Omega-3 oil in the diet the healthier the heart. With Omega-3 oil we do not worry about weight gain. Cholesterol is usually referred to as a fat, however, in reality it is not a fat at all, but a waxy substance called a sterol. Cholesterol comes in several different forms. One is called LDL. Elevated LDL cholesterol (bad guys) is associated with heart disease, strokes and premature death. Another form of cholesterol is called HDL. HDL is the good guy and is associated with a reduction in strokes and heart disease. HDL is the good guy and LDL is the bad guy. A useful mnemonic is; HDL is the Happy Dose and LDL is the Lousy Dose.

Definition #12

Science Based Fact

Trans-fats begin as unsaturated fats which are then treated with heat and/ or pressure in order to deliberately change them into this dangerous form of saturated fat.

There are three sources of excess blood cholesterol:

Omega 6 is found in: • Corn • Sunflower

Trans-fats are dangerous because they are associated with: Increased incidence of strokes Heart attacks

Hereditary disease that causes the liver to manufacture too much cholesterol.

• Safflower.

And premature death.

Science Based Fact

Generally, there are 3 kinds of Omega oils: • Omega 3 • Omega 6 • Omega 9.

These oils are very abundant in the western diet. Because Omega 6 is so plentiful in our diet, it is recommended that one decrease consumption of Omega 6 as one increases Omega 3 and Omega 9. Omega 3 is found in high concentrations in: • Deep water fish • Egg yolk • Flax seed oil • Canola oil. Omega 3 oil is the super good guy of the oil family and a dietary increase will help balance the overabundance of Omega 6 in the western diet. Omega 9 is mono-unsaturated oil found in: • Olive • Peanuts • Avocados • Almonds.

23

Eating too much food containing cholesterol, or saturated fats that, once ingested, will be turned into cholesterol.

Or a hereditary predisposition for the large bowel to save too much cholesterol. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature, whereas unsaturated oils are liquid at room temperatures.

Science Based Fact Saturated fats are harmful for two reasons. First, saturated fats elevate the bad cholesterol (LDL), which is associated with increased incidence of heart disease, stroke and early death. Secondly, all fats/oil, whether saturated or not, contribute to obesity! Why? Because, oil is very dense in calories; one spoon full of oil is equivalent to 2 ½ spoons full of sugar.

Science Based Fact The only exception to the tendency of fats/oils to cause obesity is when one is on an extremely low carbohydrate diet (less than 40 grams daily). The body requires more than 40 grams of carbohydrate daily in order to process and store fats/oils.

Omega 9 oils are thought to help prevent

Kuwait’s record yoga class marks change in country’s fitness evolution

Social media Instagram “Q8MissFit” and “MultiWorks” were used to publicize the KFHCA & C Club event

The

starry night was a balmy and breezy one. Like an idyllic scene from a movie, the palm trees rustled, the salty waves of the sea were quietly breaking ashore and the infinity pool was as clear as glass. What seem to break the tranquility of the night were the somewhat synchronized movements of about 60 participants littered across the pool and sun deck of the C Club in Bida’a on their yoga mats to the instructions of 2 phenomenal yoga instructors. On the 20th of November 2012, the Kuwait Fitness and Health Club Association (KFHCA) in collaboration with the C Club, orchestrated the biggest yoga class here in Kuwait. Now to those of you who gaff at the idea of yoga being a fitness workout, you obviously have not been to a great class my friend. The 2 instructors on hand were Amber Cloney, a personal trainer from Multi Works Athletic Management (www.multiworks.net) who took the first half of the evening, and Warqa Al Shayeji, a freelance instructor and yoga veteran, who further challenged us with more advanced asanas or yoga postures. As a participant, I remember cursing somewhat colorfully in my head whilst trying to indignantly keep my back straight as one ankle was overzealously near my face and my other leg was lunged behind me (an advanced modification of Ashva Sanchalanasana or Horse Rider’s pose or so I was told). What was astounding, apart from my incredulous wonderment at everyone’s poker face of masking their pain and the quiet grunts as we twisted, lunged and

changed positions, were the number of attendees as this event was predominantly advertised through social media outlets like Twitter and Instagram. Says Yves Preissler, initiator and founder of the KFHCA, “The tides of fitness are changing in Kuwait. As social media is cementing its popularity in society today, this event was a great example of reaching out to Kuwaitis and everyone else in a non-conventional way and to get them excited at getting fit and having fun.” Fun indeed. For an avid social media user, it was great to see some of my social media partners-in-crime attend this event with great enthusiasm. And how could one not be excited, with the backdrop being the lush pool and sun deck of the C Club in Bida’a? Marie Molinie, who is the Club Manager of this beautiful establishment, was happy with the event’s turnout. Molinie, a personal trainer in her own right and a big advocate of fitness in this country what with being one of the organizers of the recent Kuwait Charity Run, remarked that fitness awareness within the community was slowly becoming more pervasive and that it was a great achievement. “I feel that finally after 9 months of setting up, things are happening. We have such a long way to go but for the first time in 9 months, I’m seeing what I want finally achieving. We just need to keep the moment going.” If you are interested in attending upcoming fitness events in Kuwait, be sure to subscribe to info@multiworks.net or follow @multiworks on Instagram. Society/Animal Care

Shares a kinship with animals of all sizes and species. Life mission is to care for Kuwait’s forgotten animals, spread awareness and empathy. Views herself as a risk taker with a coffee addiction.

Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi and John Peaveler

Biodiversity: Not Just a Myth. This story begins with an honest truth: A summer survey of Kuwait’s public access desert would reveal a landscape comprised primarily of farm animals, garbage, and earth (sand, dirt, and dust). A careful eye would notice some plants, but very few, very small, and nearly dead. I’m talking about those areas outside of the city, where urban civilization ends and nature begins. The obvious reason for the lack of plant life is that we live in a desert. We get very little precipitation. Plants need water. Sand is the natural substrate of the desert. These factors combined equal a quasi-moonscape, right? If you’ve made these conclusions, you are, I’m happy to say, mistaken, and it is my goal in writing this to amaze you with the beauty of Kuwait and encourage everyone to do better for the sake of our natural heritage. The images of giant drifting sand dunes and storms that swallow up entire houses that so many of us associate with the word desert simply do not represent Kuwait. Our ecosystem is harsh: it’s hot, it’s dry, it’s wind-swept, it’s dusty, but most importantly, it is positively teeming with life. Actually, it SHOULD be positively teeming with life, but for the most part, it isn’t. It would be teeming with life if nature were allowed to take its course. Instead, we see the results of decades of under regulated grazing, off-road driving, and winter camping. It seems grim, I know. I’m here to tell you there is hope. More than that: there is life out there, just waiting for a safe place to live.

Enter the Abdaliya Nature Project. The Abdaliya Nature Project was conceived in late 2010 by Kuwait Oil Company employees with a particular interest in seeing the restoration of Kuwait's desert. These employees, acknowledging their role to utilize petroleum resources while protecting Kuwait's natural environment, took the initiative to preserve an area of desert approximately 1.5 million square meters in size. Prior to reutilization as a nature project, this area was in the public domain and was being used for winter camping. Winter camping in Kuwait, while originally nothing more than a traditional way to enjoy the cool winter months has become so invasive and destructive that the desert ecosystem cannot compete with the concrete, garbage, tires, and other pollution dumped annually upon the spring abandonment of the campsites. The project began with months of clearing garbage and debris left behind by more than a decade of camping. The most common forms of waste www.citypageskuwait.com

removed included water tanks, concrete blocks, concrete septic tanks, car tires, food and beverage containers, and materials used for shade. With a clean slate to work with, the next steps included constructing access roads and water pipelines followed by the planting of nearly 40,000 seedlings and saplings. Why not simply let the plants return on their own? The answer is diversity. While the “if you build it they will come” model is less costly and much more simple, the result is an imbalance of species. Much like a farmer’s field left empty and consumed by weeds, bare desert in Kuwait will result in a few species taking over the entire ecosystem, thus absorbing nutrients and precipitation and excluding other plants. From the very beginning Abdaliya was planted with a diverse group of native species. Replanting commenced in early 2011. In less than a year, the Abdaliya Nature Project transformed a barren and utterly destroyed wasteland patch of desert into a unique and incredibly beneficial oasis

of flora and fauna. During this period,K’S PATH has proudly been working with KOC on this project doing clean up, wildlife monitoring, anti-poaching, feral dog management, and more. Even in this relatively short period, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of birds, lizards, snakes, rodents, and insects in the project, none of whom were introduced. Our goal for the next two years is to introduce fox and hedgehogs to the area as we continue to strive toward a natural, balanced, and well-managed ecosystem. KOC is also planning to build an education center at the site so that we can begin to spread this message of diversity and protection for Kuwait’s future. The fact is that it will take all of us working together to protect Kuwait’s natural heritage for future generations. If you participate in winter camping or drive offroad, please consider the implication of your actions. Properly dispose of your waste, remove everything you bring into the desert, and stick to established driving tracks.

CP’s exclusive short and sweet ‘stand-up’ interview with Kim K

When thinking Kim Kardashian one thinks of the larger than life iconic diva like personality dominating the world of American socialites, so when I saw her up close and personal I was taken aback at how delicate and agreeable she actually is. You can sense her strong determination to do her job well, albeit it being a simple appearance here and there, yet she proved to be the epitome of professionalism.

Her look was simple wearing a dress by Roland Mouret, which she teamed with Louboutins and simple diamond earrings. With impeccable her make-up and hair she seemed almost surreal, as if airbrushed in real life. Hear features softer more delicate than they seem on television, and her stature quite petite – contrary to the misconception. The large crowd of people who showed up sent her team into a security tailspin, however when Kim finally emerged for her appearance at Millions of Milkshakes she took to the carpet appearance like a professional. CityPages was lucky enough to have exclusive access to her for an interview and we did our absolute best to lock her down for the few minutes that we were allowed to speak with her. I asked her what she thought of Kuwait and she replied that she “loves it here and hopes to open a Dash store with her sisters when they find the time”. Since the crowd that came out to see here was intimidating to say the least, I asked her if she minded the fiasco that naturally ensued, where she replied “not at all”. “Im not done visiting the Middle East she stated, I’m off to Bahrain after Kuwait to open Millions of Milkshakes there too” she offered when I asked her what she was doing next. And with that her assistant called time on our short conversation only to have Kim ask her “can’t we give Kinda another few minutes?” Unfortunately by then the crowd seemed to have doubled in size, and Kim had to leave the premises to make it in time for her next appearance. CityPages wishes to thank the owners and management of Millions of Milkshakes, Lisa Conrad and Kim’s PR team for granting us this exclusive interview.

Also, he was named United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2007. Paulo Coelho is my personally favorite male author, and I have almost read all his books except his most recent one, Aleph. The winner stands alone isn’t like anything I have read for him or for any other author before. In this book, Paulo writes about death and murder all in the surroundings of France at the Cannes Film Festival. The story takes place in the now, getting inside the minds of many different characters who are brought together at Cannes for different reasons, all from different nationalities and backgrounds. Each one of them, one way or the other gets involved in the other’s life. Igor, a Russian businessman who came to Cannes to get his wife back who has his own concept of right and wrong, Hamid; a fashion designer who always tries to stay true to his work and himself, Jasmine; a top model high in demand, Gabriela, a struggling actress who comes to Cannes in hope of changing her life forever, and finally Ewa, a Russian woman who’s married to Hamid Hussian but is constantly haunted by her ex-husband’s shadow. Igor spent two years planning and planning to get his wife back, but as we all know sometimes God has a totally different plan waiting for us. But to him, there was no logic to love. He believes that one person can go as far as they see fit to get the person they love. But, how far is too far? www.citypageskuwait.com

Next Month...

Can murder for love ever be justified? When someone dies, does it affect the world? “God made the world in six days, but what is the world? It’s what you and I see. Whenever someone dies, a part of the universe dies too. Everything a person felt, experienced and saw dies with them, like tears in the rain.” – Paulo Coelho This book will twist your thinking and your view of life. How far is too far? How far are we willing to go and to sacrifice the thing we love or the person we love? Is what we are running after really worth it at the end of the day? To what extent can our dreams be manipulated? What happens when obsession turns to murder? All of these and many more questions will be answered in this great book. It will take you to discover the dark side of fame, behind the scenes of one of the world’s most important film festival in a very intrigued manner.

Our lovely readers, in the next issue I will be featuring the greatest love story of all time, the story of Edward and Bella. As the saga came to an end this past year in the cinema, the books were much more intense, keeping true to the original details in the book. It’s a story of forbidden love turned into an eternity of commitment and passion. It’s about friendships that forms in the time of desperation and stays strong to face the toughest tests of time and how love can have you standing on your two feet forever or end your life. These books are all written by best seller author Stephenie Meyer. If you have read any of the 4 books please email me what you thought of it so we share it with the rest of the readers. Have you read the twilight saga novels? What do you think? Have you read any other books for Stephenie Meyer? What do you think?

Nada Faris

“A Melancholic Superhero”

“And how does that make you feel?” With a stiff and sluggish motion, I curl a strand of my oily hair with my index finger. I am never stiff or sluggish. Today is an exception as I have been admonished against quick movements. I ruminate, chewing my lower lip in the process, then a hapless sigh escapes my mouth and I say “Undervalued.” My mind fills with voices, pleas, calls, cries. I hear multitudes of humans scattered all over the world calling my name for help. I choose to drown out their words, to ignore them. I close my eyes focusing on one word: undervalued. The sound of a pen dancing raggedly over paper resonates while everything else lulls. “It makes me feel undervalued,” I say again, my cheeks flushing with heat and shame. I am wearing my usual uniform: tights, brightly colored. An iconic symbol clings to my chest. My muscular build almost rips the fabric. Don’t ask me why I dress so provocatively. It has been this way ever since Kuwaitis lived in mud houses. But leave my uniform aside for now. You see, when I could no longer bear my destiny as humanity’s deliverer, I tore through the skies in search for a professional who would listen to my woes. Cerulean letters protruded from a white billboard: Prof. Dawood Abdurahman - Renown Psychiatrist. His window was open so I swooshed in unaware that it had already occupied a patient. Fright filled the client whose appointment I had crashed—a thirty-something accountant diagnosed with severe paranoia. But the man was not sick. He was a Pisces. I have been reclining on a brown sofa in the www.citypageskuwait.com

middle of the psychiatrist’s office. Prof. Dawood Abdurahman sat behind me after tossing his suit jacket casually over his chair, undoing his top button, loosening his tie, and crossing his right leg over his left leg. Clean and orderly, his office showcases academic diplomas as well as family portraits. A bookshelf, which occupies two adjoining walls, is filled with books on leadership skills and various disorders. Brand new. Unopened. They say that Prof. Abdurahman had previously worked with Haifa Wahbi, Ahlam, and Asala. Maybe that should have been my signal. But no. I jumped at the opportunity. I figured he’d see me as a celebrity as well. He has spent the last ten minutes scribbling on a notepad which lay on his lap. I almost convince myself that Prof. Abdurahman is sketching a mediocre rendition of the symbol on my chest. I think with finality: You must not act like a Pisces. When the silence in the room lingers, Prof. Abdurahman asks impassively, “Do you not want to save lives anymore?” “No, no.” I protest. How would an ordinary human understand? Saving people is not a choice for me. It’s destiny. I exist for the sole purpose of delivering humanity. Every inch of my muscular body pulsates with predestination. “Of course I do.” I hesitate for a moment before I add, “But people have become rude and lazy.” “Who has?” “Everyone.” My tone is somber. “People expect me to be there all the time. They think it’s their right. Not a privilege. They don’t thank me

anymore. They just call and expect me to save them. Nobody wants to do anything on their own. It’s Superhero this and Superhero that. If prices go up, they call my name. If a dust storm strikes, they call my name. If they lose their remote controls, they also call my name. And when I don’t show up—when I’m caught up with something bigger—they say I'm worse than Saddam Hussain, or they criticize my citizenship and question my allegiance.” “What allegiance?” “National allegiance, religious allegiance, you name it. Some have called me a spy, an atheist, a ticking bomb; like I’m going to detonate one day and destroy them.” “Won’t you?” I tug on my hair with agitation. “No,” I say as I cross my arms. Maybe I sound pettish. A feeling of pain and loneliness intertwine and course through my body. “Why would I hurt Arabs?” Prof. Abdurahman clicks the pen once to retract the tip and then slides it into his pocket. He thinks I don’t see him, but I do. Light reflects off a family portrait that hangs on a wall in front of me. A younger version of the professor stands straight in an impeccable tuxedo next to a brunette with hazel eyes and a vestal smile. His wife is in her wedding dress. Dew drops glisten on the flower bouquet, capturing eternal happiness. “Because you have that power.” His words effervesce and silence follows. I turn to face him. My movement is too quick for

the naked eye and my psychiatrist leaps from his chair; pages from his notebook scatter in slow motion. “What did I tell you about quick movements?” His vehement cry echoes even beyond the walls of his office. It dismantles my concentration and allows a cacophony of human appeals to flood my mind. That’s when I hear her: a woman calls my name, demanding my immediate presence. She cries “Superhero! My nail polish is still wet on my fingernails but I have guests at the door! Don’t embarrass me!” I look in her direction and adjust my laser vision to penetrate thick walls and travel distances. Next to me, my psychiatrist continues to fume. “Oh you think you’re so strong Superhero. You think because you’re endowed with all these powers we’re supposed to worship you or something. But you’re in the wrong part of the planet. Here, we don’t idolize the powerful. We condemn them. We bite into their ego and nibble on their influence until they’re skin and bones. This is the Gulf! Here, you will always be reminded of your difference. And we don’t like people who are different and powerful. Are you listening to me?” His words fly like bullets piercing holes into my subconscious. My laser vision slows as a result past couch potatoes and philandering teenagers, past yay-sayers and nay-sayers, past the disenfranchised sectors of society and somniferous men who lecture about justice. Before I reach the woman with the nail polish crisis, my eyes rest on one particular brunette with hazel eyes and a vestal smile. His wife. “We don’t want change, Superhero. And you were not made for that. All your muscles, all your abilities, they were not made for that. You’re a porter, Superhero, created to guard the gates of the kingdom. “ After the porter insult I really zone out. I guess the remainder of his speech: “we used to be perfect, we changed the world, we were united, we had heaven on our side, and everything functioned according to its predestiny.” I wonder if he told Ahlam the same drivel. The brunette, his wife, moves to the front door of the psychiatrist’s house. I see her peer through the side windows, smile, then unlock the door and hold it wide open. “Hey,” she tells her guest, who nods and waves a brown envelope. “You can at least come in.” “What about your husband?” “He’s in the office. He won’t know. He usually comes home late. I insist. I’ll make you a cup of tea.” She then turns around and calls her servant’s name. “Make uncle Mahmood a tea thermos.” The brunette ushers the man to the guest area. As I focus my attention on the psychiatrist’s wife, I hear faint murmurs in the distance. The psychiatrist continues his tirade against my autonomy. I allow my gaze to follow the brunette and her guest. The psychiatrist’s wife sits on a couch facing her brother-in-law and rips into the brown envelope. “What is this?” she growls sbruptly, “I stol—gave you twenty-five thousand dinars. Twenty-five thousand of my husband’s dinars! You give me a notice? Where is the money Mahmood?” “The venture lost.” “You said it was a sure thing! You said you would never jeopardize your brother’s savings! We have kids you know. And bills! Oh god the bills! We just took a mortgage on the house.” “I’m not the bad guy, Sawsan. I’m not the one who stole my spouse’s savings.” Mahmood ignores the tea and stand up. “I’m sorry Sawsan. I hoped and prayed for success. I really did. But the market is suffering all over. You’re a smart woman. You’ll think of some way to repay your loans.”

Dr. Hadi Al Saffar is a Kuwaiti Periodontist who is one of the founders of the ASNAN Dental Clinic concept. His specialty deals strictly with dental implants, bone and tissue grafting. A surprising little known fact about him is that he invented a new surgical technique entitled the “pouch concept which allows for patients with little or no bone structure to hold dental implants. Admittedly he acknowledges that he didn't set out to become a dental surgeon, and he wanted the more glamourous role of Chef. However this dream wasn't met with much enthusiasm by his family, for rightly so, in those days to be a chef wasn't considered a valid career choice. compared to today. So he went off to study dentistry at The University of New York. His life doesn't lack glamour or activity, as he is known for his love of outdoors and motorbiking. Dr. Hadi is proud of the ASNAN Dental clinic which started out as a magazine then website before taking off as a full fledged high rise dental clinic boasting dentists of every speciality. ASNAN Tower is considered to be the biggest dental clinic facility in the Middle East with the hopes of it growing beyond that one day too. The team of 22 dentists is vetted very carefully prior to being brought on board the team, and CityPages couldnt help but notice with pride that www.citypageskuwait.com

they are all mostly hard working, career minded Kuwaitis. ASNAN believes in specialty quality dentistry, which has to come with a passion. Not only are their members hand picked, but also follow a specially designed administration system different to the standards seen practiced at other clinics. Dr. Hadi believes that success is a tripod consisting of Quality, Service and Care. He also stresses that aftercare is crucial in the dental treatment process. Asked what inspires him everyday he quickly states “life, I love it, being really alive is important to me and I treasure time”. He hopes to continue doing what he’s doing, such as cooking, traveling and swimming which are his ways to relax and de-stress. CityPages guesses that ASNANS Clinic service is what landed Kim Kardashian in their chair when she developed a toothache on her recent promotional tour of Kuwait, much to the delight of Dr. Hadi’s peers and anyone else there that day. Dr. Hadi’s advice to CityPages readers is to work hard while you still have the energy for it, and judging by his three motorbikes, a 67 Camaro and his Ferrari he is definitely making the most of his own energy and love for life. Zakariya Mosawi ‘Zak’ is a Kuwaiti who is a natural singer and guitarist. His voice is superb and can be easily be mistaken forthat of any Grammy winning artist. Born in Kuwait Zak attended the New English School of Kuwait where he discovered his love for playing the guitar quite early on. At 15 his parents gifted him with a blue acoustic Flamenco guitar which he hung on the wall of his bedroom for a few months; until he decided to he wanted to learn how to play it. After taking it down from the wall, he bought a book and video tape which he feverishly practiced to daily, sometimes for hours until he eventually got the hang of playing it well. Zak found he had a penchant for rock music at this point and found his calling. Learning wasn’t without its frustrations he played until his fingers bled, but he chalks that up to part of the learning process. He sacrificed his time and stuck with learning until he eventually mastered playing. Zak started taking his newly purchased electric guitar to school with him where slowly but surely he was noticed by fellow musicians, and started practicing with them during lunch and after school with his new found kindred spirits. Zak was asked to join a well -known school band called ‘Nemesis’ by the bands lead member, where they ended up writing a song and recording it entitled “Let Me Know” . Zak moved to the American School of Kuwait where he eventually met other musicians and formed his own rock band called ‘Garden Lodge’. The band started participating in school talent shows where they became very popular and constantly beat out their counterparts. Singing came as a necessity once the band realized they needed vocals, to perform all the songs that they themselves wrote and so Zak not only played the guitar but was the singer of ‘Garden Lodge’. Seeing that there was support from his parents Zak decided to record his own tape, and so with their financial investment Zak went into Kuwait’s ‘Nathaer’ studios, the only place in Kuwait at that time where independent artists could record. In those days

www.citypageskuwait.com

it was rare to see recording artists who produced English music, let alone rock. Yet Zak managed to release his first album entitled “And Finally”. He singlehandedly designed the cover paid for the production, and distributed his album to the various music shops in Kuwait. He didn’t look to make a profit but rather just relished the idea of having his music heard by others. Zak soon after was interviewed for Funoon magazine which was distributed with the Al Watan daily newspaper, and with time, word of mouth helped him gain recognition. Soon after Zak went off to college and maintained his passion for playing and singing by performing regularly at local cafes. He graduated from Murray State University Kentucky with a degree in Advertising & Marketing and eventually came back home to Kuwait where he picked up where he left off. By that time Kuwait proved to change drastically and the artistic community was growing rapidly. Embracing this new trend Zak started to play sets at the Astra Lounge where he was a big hit, and the Hangout Lounge after that for two years running as well as most recently at 52 Degrees. Of course Zak had a full time day job but that didn’t stop him from being loyal to his music. This paid off, he became renowned as the “guy who plays guitar and sings”, where he eventually started getting requests to perform at corporate events such as the Zain telecommunications company re-branding launch event. Zak eventually went on to write his much loved song ‘Mesmerized’ around that same time, and sang it (to the tune of a piano which he also taught himself during college), and with the help of 99.7 his song was released on the local radio to much acclaim. His second song “Wandering Thoughts” will be sponsored and released exclusively in partnership with CityPages this month. CityPages wishes Zakaria Moswawi luck with his next album.

Between docking stations and cables it seems most rooms in the house have a way to charge idevices. But that is the problem – they are in different rooms! All those chargers and yet we STILL find ourselves saying ‘my pad is at 2% and my phone isn’t done charging’. Why should we have to change rooms or choose which device should charge? December 2012

What Diva wants she gets!

It's Holidays season & Celebration time, I love to mention some dinning etiquette to our divas... Divas Dinning Etiquette • Coat check a woman has the choice of taking hers to the table. • Always participate in the conversation at the table; remember, don't discuss politics, religion, or health issues. • The signal that says you're ready to order is a closed menu • Wait until all are served before beginning to eat. • Sit up straight, don't talk with food in your mouth, and keep your elbows off the table. • Gently dab the corners of your mouth with your napkin-don't wipe your mouth. • Please keep your napkin on your lap until the meal is complete, then place it, loosely folded--to the left of your plate. • Don't push your plate away when you have finished eating.

Madona's demands on her tour : she's traveling with a heavy load! Her 200-person entourage includes personal chefs, 30 bodyguards, an acupuncturist, and a yoga instructor! She even totes around a personal dry cleaner and insists her dressing room be filled with lilies and white and pink roses with perfectly trimmed six-inch stems. The singer also expects the room to be swathed in a specific fabric and outfitted with 20 international phone lines.! December 2012

Poison Dart Frog

HM3 Poison Dart Frog is a limited edition of 10 pieces inspired by the spectacular yellow-banded poison dart frog. The deadly potential of the poison dart frog is camouflaged in the tropical rainforest by this amphibian’s exotically-patterned black and yellow skin. Similarly, the high-tech zirconium case of Poison Dart Frog is disguised by a sleek, black layer of PVD. The black case contrasts spectacularly with the animated rotor – framed by an over-sized date wheel – on top of the Jean-Marc Wiederrecht-designed complication.

Colored in a mix of black and yellow tones, it serves as basics for the MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog timepiece, which, in turn, comes with a PVDcoated zirconium case set, adorned with 18k gold case screws and a 22k gold automatic rotor, above the piece designed by Jean-Marc Wiederrecht. The rotor is hooped by a large date wheel. The two bulky domes the protrude from the plan of the watch, resembling the frog’s eyes, serve has housings for the hour and minute indicators, thus eliminating the need of the wearer to have to move his arm in order to read the time. The stunning limited edition MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog series sports just 10 units, each garnished with black leather straps and an intricate mechanism. The watches are exclusively purchasable via The Hour Glass in Singapore, for a price tag of around $104,000 US for each piece.

A|X FALL 2012 MIDNIGHT CITY COLLECTION For Fall 2012, Armani Exchange draws its inspiration from midnight in the city – a power-hour of newness emerges from the night. The collection mixes the concept of city architecture with geometric and abstract shapes into a strong, luxurious collection. Influenced by the city and designed with construction, the collection offers sharp silhouettes and strong details that reinforce the cornerstone of the Armani aesthetic. The collection is classically colored in black, gray, heathers, and true navy, with rich accents in wine, regatta and mineral. Prints are new with graphics that are mixed in size and scale and texture is offered with a modern take on menswear prints of tweed, herringbone, and abstract houndstooth. Fabric layering adds interesting texture and balance in both two-tone and monotone dressing while strong minimal pieces lend to the idea of masculine with feminine dressing. The accessories are designed with structure and texture. For her, framed bags, embossed croc, patent, and suede, usage of pop colors, and metallic high shine. For him, it’s a mix of shapes and sizes from backpacks to totes— these bags are both functional and stylish. This season’s must-have accessory for both men and women is the hat – from floppy to fedora it’s the single piece that elevates any look to citified sophistication.

K’S PATH’s Bark in the Park sees 400 humans with their beloved dogs Dog-centric event brings together dog loving people and pet care community to celebrate the loyal canine K’S PATH (Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and Their Habitat) – a local non-profit organization committed to animal welfare and environmental protection – held its second fundraiser dog-centric event titled ‘Bark in the Park’ on Saturday, 3rd November 2012 at the Ahmadi KOC Japanese Gardens. The successful event brought together over 400 dog-loving people and their beloved canine pets for a splendid day of socialization, fun dog competitions and happy memories. Promoting responsible pet ownership and celebrating the lovable quirks and personalities of pet dogs, the day-long event challenged pooches and their humans to test their mettle in a variety of competitions such as Best Dressed, Most Adorable, Best Child Handler, Best Look Alike, Most Obedient, Best Mixed Breed and Temptation Alley. Two new competitions were introduced this year – the Best K’S PATH Alum open to all dogs adopted from K’S PATH and an Agility Course. Says K’S PATH Founder and Chairman Ayeshah Al Humaidhi, “Bark in the Park was bigger and better than its first edition with over 400 humans and their dogs in attendance. We had a heap of entries come in even after registration deadline and well over 100 people registering at the gate. It’s encouraging to see such community support and we’d like to thank everyone – partners, sponsors, participants, vendors, volunteers and all dogs who joined us – for making the event a resounding success.’’ “Special thanks goes to the management and staff at KOC for being the host venue,” she added, “and our prize sponsors Petzone, Pawsh Boutique, Epetome Pet Boutique, Better Books and Café, and Natural Balance & Ziwi Peak for donating truly exciting prizes for the 27 winning pooches. We also thank our judges, the Master of Ceremonies Hassan Rawas and Abraaj Water for donating water for our volunteers.” While spectators gathered around the competition ring to watch dogs vie for coveted titles, the food court and vendor court was abuzz with the best of fare from D’Lush, Bess Falafel, Baking Memories, Mohamed N. Al Hajery & Sons, Natural Balance & Ziwi Peak, Kuwait Charity Run, Pawsh Boutique, Epetome Pet Boutique, Animal Care, Q8 Petography, Blue Pittbull Kennels and Lulua Publishing. The OMEGA Ladymatic in 18 Ct red gold with nearly 900 diamonds! When Daniel Craig reprises his role as James Bond in SKYFALL, he will be wearing an OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M 42mm with a black dial and a matt black ceramic unidirectional rotating divers’ bezel. Bond fans and OMEGA enthusiasts will know that the world’s favourite secret agent has been wearing Seamasters since 1995 and the Planet Ocean has been his choice since CASINO ROYALE in 2006. For SKYFALL, Bond’s choice is the steel on steel Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M OMEGA Co-Axial Chronometer, whose design features can be traced directly back to the classic Seamasters of the 1950s. Inside the case it’s a different story: the watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8500 whose revolutionary Co-Axial escapement and free sprung balance deliver long-term stability and precision, dramatically reducing the need for servicing. Also equipped with an Si14 silicon balance spring, the watch is delivered with a four-year warranty. James Bond has worn an OMEGA Seamaster in every film since GOLDENEYE in 1995. Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming first introduced Bond to OMEGA. She described Bond as a naval man and a discreet gentleman of the world, so the Seamaster was the obvious choice. OMEGA couldn’t agree more!

This could be a difficult month with three strong planets in square and in square or opposition to your sign. You'll feel restless and frustrated and you could feel argumentative and irritable. Use patience in all situations and when dealing with others. The Sun will be in Sagittarius until December 21. During that time you'll explore your community and might look into finding groups or classes to join. A New Moon in Sagittarius will bring a desire to learn about spiritual ideas and other cultures. A Full Moon in Cancer on December 28 will bring a few days of insecurity about your career choices.

The transits of Mars and Pluto in Capricorn this month could be problematic for career matters. You'll be extremely ambitious and eager to see progress, but you may experience setbacks and delays. Have patience even if you want change right away. A New Moon in Sagittarius will help you make a new start if you're furthering your education, traveling, writing, or teaching. You'll be eager to broaden your horizons and satisfy your curiosity. A Full Moon in Cancer on December 28 will make family life chaotic. A situation at home or with one of your family members will be tense.

Three planets moving through the sign of Scorpio this month will bring better communication and relations with others. You'll be kind and thoughtful, but you could be a bit inhibited about sharing your feelings or showing affection. Saturn is one of these planets, and its influence may make you cautious. Mars and Pluto in Capricorn will bring a strong desire to explore, learn, and communicate. If you decide to travel or take a course, you'll have a practical approach. The Sun in Sagittarius until December 21 and a New Moon on December 13 will bring an open, adventurous attitude toward romance. Try something new with your partner, or break up your routine to find love. Venus, Mercury, and Saturn in Scorpio will emphasize responsibilities at home and with family, but it will also foster good conversations and the creation of warm memories. If you visit or host family members, you'll get along well. You might have to make an effort not to stir up drama. Jupiter in Gemini will help you work on new goals and possible directions for the future.

The Sun in Sagittarius will bring tense situations at home or with your family. This planet is in square to your sign so it may be problematic, but a New Moon in Sagittarius on December 13 will help you make a new start. Pluto and Mars in Capricorn will make you determined to improve and make changes in your love life. You could fall hard for someone compelling. Jupiter in Gemini and your career sector will bring plenty of opportunities for growth, but you'll need to be open-minded and willing to seize the moment. Neptune in Pisces may cause confusion if you're in a relationship.

The amount of interest in the event was incredible and we’re so thankful to everyone who took the time to celebrate with us.” He added, “We’re already in the process of planning future celebrity appearances.” Thousands of fans turned up to the event, resulting in somewhat of a frenzy as the star arrived, with several videos of the crowds quickly going viral. As Kardashian’s appearance grew closer, hoards of fans from across the Middle East crowded around the surrounding vicinity. One detail Al Ghanim would have changed, however, was the security, “Whilst we’re very happy with the event overall, we’d definitely pursue a different security company if we could do it all over again. The company we contracted did not represent our vision of the event accurately whatsoever.”
