Accessibility in Pickaway County
Pickaway County is working towards accessibility for all. Whether it is shopping downtown, playing in the park or attending events at our fairgrounds, inclusion is the goal.
The Brooks-Yates Housing Board, a sub entity of the Pickaway County Board of Developmental Disabilities, has approved monies for portable metal ramps to be constructed to provide wheelchair access to local businesses and organizations. Both the Pickaway County Board of DD and the Pickaway County Visitor’s Bureau are working together to make these ramps available to local businesses and organization. The ramps are designed to be taken inside the store when it’s not open and in use. Any Pickaway County business or organization that would like to have one of these ramps can make the request for one to improve their accessibility. Businesses whose entrances cannot be fitted for this style of ramp can also apply for grant money to help fund a ramp that would fit their structure needs through the BrooksYates Housing Board. The playground at Mary Virginia Crites Hannan Park recently upgraded their playground to include a wheelchairaccessible swing. The project was funded through the Boundless Playground Fund through the Pickaway County Community Foundation. “The Boundless Playground Fund was started in 2007 to support the conceptual development and construction of a playground at the Mary Virginia Crites Hannan Park,” Jan Shannon, executive director of PCCF said. “The desire is for it to be accessible to all children. The fund also assists the city by donating funding for repairs and maintenance needed on the current playground facility.” Another exciting accessible area is our new Pickaway County Agriculture and Event Center. Accessible features of the fairgrounds include doors that open outward, increased width of doors, lower countertop heights, paved handicapped parking spaces and paved camping spaces.
