Better lives

ONE story at a time. “My whole life was getting smaller and smaller. Emotionally, I felt old and it had nothing to do with age. The arthritis was significant… I couldn’t ride my bike well. The knee replacement literally changed my life. I’m 62 years old and I have another thirty years to go that I want to be active. Orthopedic ONE gave me my life back.” – Susie Scott, Long Distance Cyclist and Elementary School Teacher

Thinking of moving in 2017? Call The Hetherington team now so you don’t miss out on the great Summer market. Right now, we’re meeting with sellers to talk about cost effective updates and staging homes to help you make as much money as possible. We start selling a home weeks before it’s put up for sale. While most agents start selling a home when they throw a sign in the yard, we’ve designed a plan to generate maximum exposure, build buyer excitement and help you capture the best possible price. Strategies include sending private notes to other agents, making them aware a desirable home is coming soon. And we work with other agents to get qualified buyers in for a sneak peak before the home is offered for sale. (Buyers love this and often pay more for fear of losing it when it’s offered to the general public). Our marketing is designed to create a rush of buyer interest and maximize seller profits.

Dublin – the best place to live in Ohio

LATEST NEWS

Just look at the number of volunteers that support the Irish festival, the number of residents that attend City Council meetings, City Manager “Talks in the Park” and coffees, and the number of residents that have gone through our Citizen U and Citizen Police Academy. Our residents care about their community. This is why we continue to show up on the “best places to live” lists and why people make Dublin home.

The City of Dublin is committed to engaging and communicating with its residents through a variety of platforms. We are constantly updating our website and social media accounts and using them to interact with our community. While you’re connecting with us online, be sure to look for “Dublin News in :90.” It’s a weekly video that highlights the Dublin news you need to know for the week ahead in about 90 seconds.

Dublin was recently named as the best place to live in Ohio by real estate website Niche.com. They also rated us as the 4th best suburb in the country. You may be surprised by this, but I am not. I know what really makes Dublin so AWESOME – it’s you, our residents and businesses.

The safety of our community is another factor in making Dublin such a great place to live. There has been a steady overall decline in property crimes here since 2007. We constantly put the safety of our residents and businesses as our top priority. We teach our residents about crime, how to protect themselves and how to protect each other through the neighborhood crime watches and by serving as our community service officers. We cannot talk about how great Dublin is without talking about our school system. Dublin’s schools are by far some of the best in the state and country. Dr. Todd Hoadley is out in front leading the way and talking to residents about what can be done to make the district better. He talks about the “Dublin Difference” and this year teamed up with our police chief to ensure parents and students were trained on the opiate crisis in our country. They were taught to check for signs and not to be afraid to speak up if they see this happening in their school or community. This is the “Dublin Difference” in action.

CONNECT WITH US

CITY COUNCIL

I continue to be proud of the services your dedicated City workers and contractors provide. We strive to be second to none, and we are always working to do better and to be more efficient. Our residents’ honest and timely feedback is much appreciated and helps us know where we need to improve our services. City Council has put a strong emphasis on citizen engagement. You’re always welcome to attend our Council meetings at City Hall, and I would also like to invite you to attend any of our “Talks in the Park” or City Manager coffees. These are open forums that can provide you with updates to our City services and projects. They are also a chance for you to inform me and to discuss one-on-one any concerns you may have regarding your neighborhood and/or our community as a whole. Keep an eye on our website and social media for exact dates and locations of upcoming “Talks in the Park” and coffee events. Certainly, you can also always call me or contact me via our website.

Back row, left to right: Tim Lecklider, Christina A. Alutto, Amy Salay, Chris Amorose Groomes, Michael Keenan. Front Row: Mayor Greg Peterson, Vice Mayor John Reiner.

Again, thank you to our residents and businesses! You make Dublin a world-class city. Thank you for your commitment to making and keeping Dublin a top-ranked community and great place to live and work. Sincerely,

Dana McDaniel, City Manager

ale Darnell has lived in Dublin for 29 years, and though he has firm roots in central Ohio, he is no stranger to travel.

It was actually at a global managers’ meeting in Rome, Italy when Darnell began to seriously think about participating in Pelotonia. As a member of the The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center James Foundation Board, Darnell attended the Celebration for Life event in May 2010 and heard Tom Lennox, then CEO of Pelotonia, speak about the ride to end cancer. It wasn’t until Darnell attended that global managers’ meeting in Rome in July 2010 that he felt the emotional connection and urge to ride. Suzanne Bednarchik, a co-worker from Gartner – an information technology advisory firm – who also graduated from OSU, told Darnell about her personal experience participating in Pelotonia. “She planted the seed in my mind,” says Darnell. After returning home, buying a new bike and riding around the community for a few weeks, Darnell officially announced to Debbie – his wife, who had been battling breast cancer for more than 20 years – that he was signing up to ride the full 180 miles. With his official registration on Aug. 1, Darnell only really had three weeks until the ride. He was confident that he could handle the physical challenge, though he didn’t have much time to train. Darnell has been active throughout his life, having earned a football scholarship to play quarterback at OSU under Woody Hayes. Darnell left the Buckeyes after his freshman year to play baseball in the minor leagues as catcher and outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. “I’ve been athletic almost my entire life, and even though I wasn’t riding outside (prior to signing up), I had an indoor stationary bike … so that was how I got my cardio,” says Darnell. Darnell, confident that he was doing well physically, skipped a couple of the rest stops and water fill-up stations. He became incredibly dehydrated and had to stop for a rest. “I found myself at the top of this hill at what I recall as an endless driveway. I had my bike propped up against the mailbox and I got off and was just sitting in the gravel with other riders,” he says. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

“My hamstrings were so locked up that I couldn’t get up.” For a man who is constantly on the go, Darnell enjoys long car rides for the quiet moments of reflection they afford. This was a different kind of ride, but he couldn’t help but reflect while sitting in the gravel of that endless driveway. “There’s always a sag wagon (a support vehicle that patrols cycling routes) around the corner to come and pick up any riders who can’t continue. I never felt in danger,” says Darnell. “I’m sitting there thinking about my wife, who is fighting so hard to live, and I’m in pain and I can’t move. … I can’t get up, but I know that I have help right there. Whereas she, outside of the help she got from the James to extend her life, had no one on the way to help.” Though he was unable to ride all 180 miles, Darnell personally raised $3,600 his 12 • August/September 2017

first year participating in Pelotonia. He was hooked. The following year, he organized Team Darnell, made up of friends and co-workers. Just two days before Pelotonia 2011, Debbie passed away after 24 years of battling breast cancer. Team Darnell rode with heavy hearts that year, but losing his wife only affirmed Darnell’s commitment to Pelotonia and the ride to end cancer. “The real reason I got involved was I really couldn’t do anything for my wife because I’m not a doctor, and I wanted to do something,” he says. “This was my way of doing something to help, to raise awareness for cancer, for Pelotonia and for the James.” Darnell has participated each year since his first ride and doesn’t plan to stop, making this year his eighth Pelotonia. After remarrying and riding for two www.dublinlifemagazine.com

more years on Team Darnell, he joined his wife, Janice’s, peloton, and rode three more years with them. Janice plays a big role in Darnell’s journey with Pelotonia, encouraging him to continue riding and searching for a cure. Team Darnell generated a total of $220,000 during its three-year stint, and Darnell has personally raised more than $83,000 in all of his years with Pelotonia. Darnell has lived in Birnam Woods at Muirfield Village for 29 years and spent a total of 10 years as president of the homeowners’ association. Naturally, Darnell saw this relationship with Muirfield Village as an opportunity to help raise money for Pelotonia and, in turn, for the James. The Country Club at Muirfield Village donated a foursome to Pelotonia last year, and this generosity spurred Darnell to collaborate with Alissa Klein, membership and communications director at the club, to organize a celebrity golf outing to benefit Team Muirfield Village and Pelotonia in July. Darnell is retired from his position as a regional vice president at Gartner, and when he isn’t riding his bike or fundraising for Pelotonia, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their two Rhodesian ridgebacks, Pete and Derek. Darnell golfs often, is a Colo Member at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and, when his location permits, Darnell likes to scuba dive. The Darnells love to travel when they can. Their most recent trip included a stop in Alabama to visit Darnell’s daughter, Beth, before continuing on to a cruise in the Bahamas. His passport also boasts stamps from Monte Carlo, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece and Tahiti during his professional life. The next trip for the Darnells will actually be back to Rome, where much of Darnell’s current journey began years ago. Through his work on the James Foundation Board and years of fundraising with Pelotonia, Darnell has done much to support awareness and hope. His green Pelotonia arrows – each one a “badge of courage,” he says – only point toward one direction: a cure.

Downtown Dublin business owners get creative during North High Street construction project

By Josh Poland

f you venture into downtown Dublin anytime soon, you no doubt will notice the improvements underway involving the Bridge Park West development and road construction.

Restaurant and store owners in the area are hoping you’ll also notice something else: They’re open for business. “A lot of people think that we’re not open, but obviously, that isn’t true,” says Jamie Mollwitz, co-owner of Boho 72 Boutique. Mollwitz says she initially feared the worst when she learned about the planned construction this past winter. A major piece of the project has involved widening North High Street to three lanes between North Street and Indian Run Drive to improve traffic flow and accommodate future development. Boho 72’s location at 72 N. High St. had Mollwitz concerned that the road and parking restrictions would negatively impact her business. “When I found out about the construction project, I went home and cried,” Mollwitz says. “I thought it would force us to close the store. Downtown Dublin Investment Major improvements, which total more than $120 million, are coming to downtown Dublin as part of public and private investments in the City’s historic district. The investment includes: • Iconic pedestrian bridge and public plazas • Bridge Park West mixed-use development • New Columbus Metropolitan Library Dublin branch • North High Street widened to three lanes between North Street and Indian Run Drive • Relocation and replacement of a water line that services more than half of Dublin’s population • Construction of infrastructure for the relocation of overhead utilities underground to improve reliability and aesthetics • Addition of fiber to enhance capabilities for local businesses and promote economic development • Addition of parking to the area to accommodate future development, including the planned library expansion and renovation • New sidewalk on east side of North High Street connecting the Historic District to the future riverfront park • Replacement of recreation path on west side of North High Street For more information, head to www.DublinOhioUSA.gov/ downtown-dublin.

he Dublin Football League (DFL) will enter its 28th season this fall, offering age-appropriate recreation football for Dublin area children in grades K-6. Over the years, the league has become an important part of life in Dublin for many families. “The league started back in 1990 to offer recreation-style football for Dublin residents,” says Jeff Galvin, president of the DFL board of directors. Galvin, whose son is just starting in the league, has been a DFL coach for 20 years. The league focuses on a safe and fun football experience for its players, and Galvin says that begins with the allvolunteer coaching staff. “Most of our coaches are dads, and most played college or professional football,” he says. All coaches are required to earn certification through USA Football’s Heads Up Football program. Additionally, coaches must receive concussion training and undergo thorough background checks. To set its players up for success, the league works to teach them the fundamentals, and limits the amount of contact during practices. Both of these standards help reduce the risk of sustaining a concussion. 16 • August/September 2017

To further its dedication to safety, DFL has partnered with Peak Human Performance, a local athletic training facility. Peak Human Performance provides skill camps and developmentally-appropriate training for DFL players to ensure that each athlete avoids injury and learns the skills necessary to compete. In order to make participation available to all young people, the league also offers scholarships, funded by local busi-

nesses, to offset participation costs for families. To guarantee safety, the league only uses top-of-the-line equipment, and that comes at a price. The registration fee includes helmets, shoulder pads and game jerseys. Helmets and shoulder pads are inspected yearly and must meet Ohio High School Athletic Association standards. Each spring, the league holds free camps to introduce non-contact fundamentals and practice drills. The camps are held at www.dublinlifemagazine.com

the three Dublin high schools and are conducted by each school’s coaches and players. Because many of the high school players once participated in the league, it is a chance for them to give back and further entrench the program in the community. One look at the league’s list of prominent alumni should be enough to give current DFL players plenty of motivation. Past participants in the league include former The Ohio State University players such as offensive lineman Mike Adams, who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears, and tight end Jake Stoneburner, who played for the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins. The league’s most famous former player is quarterback Brady Quinn. Quinn starred in college at Notre Dame University and was chosen by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft. The league aims to provide opportunities for kids within Dublin City Schools, but opens registration to other communities if space allows. Registration runs from March through July, and the first practices begin Aug. 1. Teams of 15-18 players typically practice two or three times each week, and games take place on September and October weekends. The leagues progress from flag football to mini-tackle for kindergarten through grade 2, and steadily move to more tackling in the junior and senior leagues for grades 3-6. More than 600 athletes participate in DFL programs, which also include rugby in the spring and cheerleading in the fall. Bob Valasek is a contributing writer. Party of The largest tandem rally in the world heads to Dublin By Jake Nerone

This year, a new event will make Dublin home, and visitors are coming in two by two. The Midwest Tandem Rally is hosted by a different state each year, and this year, Ohio was chosen, with Dublin as host city for the second time. Participants will come in from all over the country, and some from different parts of the world. “Of all the tandem rallies, the Midwest Tandem Rally is the largest,” says Pam Kulhanek, director of the rally in Ohio. “The Midwest Tandem Rally draws participants from all over the country.” Kulhanek says that in 2013, when the rally was hosted by Greene County, it drew participants from 33 states, Canada and Brazil. The last time the rally was in Dublin was 1997. With good roads for riding, dining options and plenty of hotels, Dublin makes for the perfect spot for the rally’s 41st event. Each year, the rally becomes a hub for returning participants to catch up with friends met in years’ past. “Not only do we have tandems, we have teams on triples, quads and a quint,” says Kulhanek. “Best of all, each year, the rally allows you to catch up with friends you have made from previous rallies. It is like a big family reunion.” The event is a spectacle, even for those who don’t own a tandem bike.

Working in ethical, sustainable fashion and textiles, Celeste Malvar-Stewart sources many of her raw materials from around Columbus—from various fibers and fabrics to ingredients for dyes. Every piece she creates is handmade—whether felted, spun, woven, or embroidered. Celeste believes the collaborative spirit of our city to be one of the most unique aspects of Columbus, and something she hasn’t found anywhere else.

“If single bike owners or local tandem teams would like to join us, they are welcome,” she says. “We would love to introduce them to tandem riding and what the Midwest Tandem Rally is all about.” The great part about the rally is that it’s not a race, but rather a chance for participants to get to enjoy the ride while exploring the outdoors and spending time with friends. “We offer turn-by-turn cue sheets (directions) on the Friday night ice cream ride. This offers participants an opportunity to ride once they check in at the rally registration and check into the hotel,” Kulhanek says. “We offer fully-supported, multiple ride choices both Saturday and Sunday. The rides are offered short, medium and long miles, and participants choose which route they wish.” Kulhanek also suggests that those who are not participating to come out and watch the tandems take off on Saturday and Sunday at the Columbus Marriott Northwest. “It is something to see, having 300-plus tandems lining up and heading out together,” Kulhanek says. “Bring the kids if you are interested in tandem riding. This is a great time to see the variety of tandems and configurations available.” Even when participants are not riding, there will be many activities planned to keep the weekend full of fun and excitement. “We offer seminars on Saturday night, a banquet on Sunday night at the Makoy Banquet Center and, throughout the weekend, when not riding, we have vendors from around the country offering everything from the latest in bike safety, the latest fashions in bike clothing and accessories, to jewelry, and of course, tandem bicycles for those of us looking to purchase another one,” Kulhanek says. The Midwest Tandem Bike Rally takes place Sept. 1-4, and includes various registration options, including a tandem team of two adults, a team of an adult and a child, a triple team of three adults, and a custom team.

Student Spotlight

A Strong Backboard Coffman student juggles responsibility on and off the court By Charles Williams

Thinking back to what kind of player he was when he first began playing the sport at age 10, he remembers having a rougher go of things. “I was very uncoordinated, but I worked at it and it got me to where I am today,” says Carlson. “Being tall definitely helped me as well.”

“It allows me to help better the community and to get to know many people around my school.” 28 • August/September 2017

Given that the average height of an NBA player is 6’7”, Carlson is in good company at 6’6”. At his current height, he stands as tall as basketball legends Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. But his height isn’t the only thing that’s gotten Carlson where he is today. He has developed many leadership skills and has focused on teamwork throughout his basketball career, and those skills have naturally translated into other areas of his life. “Playing basketball has helped me in many aspects of life. It has taught me leadership skills, which I apply in the classroom, as well as teamwork, which extends far beyond basketball,” he says. “Basketball has taught me discipline and dedication as well as hard work.” As a student athlete, Carlson understands the importance of those two skills, and his involvement in the superintendent’s advisory committee, student council, National Honor Society and Coffman’s freshman mentorship program are evidence of his well-roundedness. “I am involved in them because it allows me to help better the community and to get to know many people around my school,” he says. Extracurriculars mean nothing, however, if a student doesn’t have the grades to support them – and Carlson does. “I really enjoy school and learning about new things every day,” he says. “I love spending time in the classroom with friends and teachers.” Carlson even takes to doing his homework every night like he plays basketball, by putting in the time studying and working hard. “Obviously, I don’t enjoy the homework, but I understand it will benefit me in the long run,” he says.

As he prepares to begin his senior year at Coffman, Carlson has begun exploring his options for college. “I have researched and visited some (universities), but I am also getting recruited by some schools for basketball,” he says. “I will have to make some decisions in terms of schools in the upcoming months.” Being a star athlete, Carlson’s plans for college after he graduates in 2018 might seem unusual. Though he plans to continue playing in college, Carlson has no plans to pursue a professional career in the NBA. “I would much rather earn my degree and get a job than play in the NBA,” he says. “I think education lasts longer than athletics.” It’s clear Carlson has serious thoughts about the future. During college, he intends to major in either secondary education or pre-med. A student with as many responsibilities and ambitious goals as Carlson needs a strong support system, and luckily, he has it with his family. “My entire family has been supporting me forever as an athlete, and I know that they will continue to do so,” Carlson says. Charles Williams is a contributing writer. Feedback welcome at gbishop@cityscenemediagroup.com.

She likes Johnson’s because the flavors are richer than other ice cream shops she’s been to and the business feels like a smalltown community ice cream parlor.

Storyteller Series WITH AMANDA DEPERRO

This Land is Your Land

Dublin’s Thomas family is still a major part of the community

Dublin Life’s Storyteller Series focuses on the people who make Dublin great – people who have made improving the community a part of their life, people who have been able to call Dublin home for a long time and people who have watched Dublin evolve over the years. The Storyteller Series tells the history of Dublin through his or her eyes, and sheds light on what living in Dublin was like decades ago. With the help of these special people, Dublin has undoubtedly become a better place.

No matter where in Dublin you are, it’s hard to ignore the construction going on between Emerald Parkway and Bridge Street. With new and beautiful options in living, dining and entertainment opening up in Dublin, the City only continues to grow. And much of that is thanks to one family’s generous donation of more than an acre of land upon which Bridge Park will sit. Though John and Berniece Thomas passed away in 1981 and 2002, respectively, the couple will be remembered lovingly in Dublin as a family who gave to their community. They are survived by two children, who I was able to sit down with in Dublin City Hall. John Thomas owned Thomas Motor Sales, but bought land in Dublin because he knew his three children – Dave, Jody and Norman – would benefit from growing up and working on a farm. John also served as a deputy police officer, trustee of Perry Township and, like many Village residents at that time, volunteer firefighter. Norman, the eldest Thomas child, passed away in 2008, but Dave and Jody remember their father as having incredible foresight into what Dublin would become. “I think he bought the farm because he knew it was a good investment,” says Dave. “I can recall him and (fellow Dublin resident) John McKitrick sitting at the Dublin Night Club and having lunch, and they talked about (how) ‘a shopping center is going to be on Bethel Road.’” Jody was born Oct. 18, 1940, and Dave a few years later on May 12, 1942. Being so close in age, the siblings have many memories growing up together in the Village. “Our childhood was wonderful,” says Dave. “We rode horses across the river and joined up with other riders on the west side of Dublin,” says Jody. “We went to the Shawnee Hills swimming pool; that was a big hit. Everybody was there.” 32 • August/September 2017

(From left) Norman Thomas’ daughter, Terrie Basemann; Jody Thomas; Dave Thomas; LaDonna Thomas; and Dave and LaDonna’s daughter, Julie Crossley. On June 26, a plaque commemorating Jody and Dave’s parents was unveiled along the strip of land they donated to the City.

Jody and Dave tell me about Ethel Artz, the woman who raised cows in Historic Dublin. She had a colorful personality, and nearly every Storyteller has shared at least one anecdote about Artz with me. “We would ride our horses on her sidewalk, and she would chase us with her broom,” says Jody, laughing. “If they pooped on her sidewalk, we were in big trouble. She was a character.” www.dublinlifemagazine.com

A major part of living in a small village like Dublin was the utter safety that the residents enjoyed, and the ability to spend their time as they pleased. The Thomas children were able to ride their horses right across the Scioto River and through Bridge Street. When everyone in the Village was either related or neighbors, letting children do as they pleased during the day was a non-issue. “We would leave after breakfast and come back before supper,” says Dave. “Our parents didn’t worry.” Riding horses was just one of the things Dave, Jody and several Dublin children did to pass the time and, like many at the time, most of their free time was spent in or around the Scioto River. The siblings recall taking their aluminum rowboat to visit their grandmother on the other side of the river, and ice skating on it in the winter. “You could hear the ice cracking when you got down there,” says Dave. One hobby that children across all generations share is making mischief. When Dave and Jody were in school, a popular prank was to steal a buggy from Plain City and put it onto the Dublin schoolhouse roof. Jody and Dave say they were “close” to getting their buggy on the roof, but one prank nearly got Dave caught by Dublin police. Students attempted to get a classmate’s old Crosley into the Dublin cemetery, but the car ended up stuck on the fencing. Accomplices included both Dave and Jody, with Dave behind the wheel. “Kids were saying, ‘Go this way,’ ‘No, go that way,’ and we got stuck on the fence – and here come the policemen,” says Dave. “I couldn’t get out. So I just laid down on the floor; they were shining lights in and everything and didn’t see me.” The mischievous children grew into successful adults. After serving in the Army and returning from deployment in Germany, Dave followed in his mother’s footsteps and became a teacher. He spent most of his career at Whetstone High School in Columbus, and farmed outside of school hours. He married another Dublin native, LaDonna, nearly 55 years ago, and the couple have two daughters, Julie and Tammie. Jody went to The Ohio State University College of Medicine and practiced family medicine for 44 years, the majority of which she spent in Exeter, N.H. Though Jody and Dave are www.dublinlifemagazine.com

The plaque for John and Berniece sits near the Scioto River, where Jody and Dave clearly remember playing during their childhood. With the new Bridge Park development and donated land from the Thomas family, the site will once again host playing children and sightseeing adults. now retired and living outside of Dublin – New Hampshire and London, Ohio, respectively – they both come back frequently, and still own their parents’ home on Tuller Road. On the day that we spoke, Dave and Jody were visiting to see a plaque unveiled on Riverside Drive between Emerald Parkway and Bridge Street to commemorate their parents. The plaque sits on a large stone under a tree, and will remain there to honor John and Berniece. Now, Bridge Park visitors for years to come will know the family who made the new park possible. “Thanks to the generosity of the Thomas family,” the plaque reads, “the natural beauty of this site will forever be preserved for the entire community to enjoy.”

Ringing the Wedding Bells I

Many people enlist the help of their jewelers when selecting or designing a ring, and sometimes they ask for assistance in the proposal itself. I asked a few Dublin jewelers to share their stories. Beth Cevasco and her husband, Scott, have owned Scott’s Custom Jewelers for 17 years, and with that comes tons of experience designing unique engagement rings. One of their clients was planning to propose to his New York theater actress girlfriend. “He had an elaborate plan worked out, and wanted a real ring and a fake ring made,” says Beth. The man went to his girlfriend’s New York apartment and started an argument. When they were in a heated fight, he opened the window, showed her the ring, indicated that he was going to propose and threw the fake ring out of the window. Obviously shocked, the girlfriend screamed in horror and disbelief. That’s when the gentleman bent down on one knee and pulled out the real ring for the actual proposal. “He said a dramatic girl deserved a dramatic proposal,” says Beth. The groom also had one more surprise up his sleeve: He designed the rings so that when she put her engagement and wedding band together, the rings make up the beginning bars from the bride’s audition song, “Somewhere Out There.” Beth and Scott have designed several exclusive rings for their clients, including one for a man James Scott proposed to his girlfriend in Taiwan as who proposed to his girlfriend at a part of an elaborate plan with her family, using this checkpoint while hiking Mount St. ring designed by Dublin Village Jewelers. adore a good love story; any that includes two people getting engaged and married. Even better are stories that include creative, unique wedding proposals – that planning, attention to detail, and consideration of the proper time, place and environment that makes it perfect. The person asking should consider the couple’s history and how they enjoy their time together, whether it be quietly on a beach, with family or in the middle of chaos in Times Square.

of the checkpoint engraved inside both of their bands, and his wedding ring has the silhouette of Mount St. Helens etched on it with a diamond at the checkpoint location. Kevin Laudick is one of the owners of Leo Alfred Jewelers, and my query made him immediately think of a proposal that he and his uncle, Tom, also an owner at the time, were a part of. “My uncle, Tom, owns and has flown a hot air balloon for years,” says Kevin. “One of our customers asked if he would take him and his girlfriend up for a ride so that he could propose.” Kevin and Tom agreed, made the ring and headed to Marysville Airport for an evening flight on a very calm night. They had enough propane for a 30-45 minute flight and, after 20 minutes, the man still had not asked the question. “We were wondering if he was getting cold feet,” says Kevin, laughing. It was so calm that they weren’t moving much at all, and they began to worry about where they could set the balloon down, avoiding power lines, tree lines and farmland. Finally, the customer proposed, the woman said yes, they took photos on their camera and everyone was happy, but one more decision remained. Knowing they were low on fuel and running out of places to land, Kevin and Tom concluded that they should set down directly next to the high wire fence on the property of the women’s correctional facility. Not three minutes after they landed, several guards in patrol vehicles showed www.dublinlifemagazine.com

up, one armed with a shotgun, and informed them that they were trespassing. The guards said they saw Kevin and Tom taking pictures of the prison from the balloon and that they had to confiscate the camera. “The bride-to-be probably didn’t think marriage would lead to prison,” says Kevin. Months later, the couple got their camera back, but the memory card inside was empty. “We still have a good laugh with them about their engagement story every time we see them,” Kevin says. Annie and Yury Verbitsky own Dublin Village Jewelers, and enjoy getting to know their customers. A recent example involves an engineer client who had a very specific ring request for an extravagant proposal. He wanted a unique rose gold setting with a champagne pink sapphire in the center, and a halo of white diamonds surrounding it. The Verbitskys ordered several stones before finding the right sapphire, and then had to rush to create the ring in time for the proposal. The engineer’s girlfriend was from Taiwan and had planned a trip to visit her family. He said he couldn’t go on the trip, but had actually called her family, asked for permission to marry and planned to fly out secretly to meet up with her. It took planes, trains and automobiles, but finally he arrived in her hometown and was able to surprise his bride-to-be, and propose to her on the banks of the Love River. “We were so excited when he flew over for the engagement,” says Annie. “Then he called us when he returned and brought his fiancé in so we could meet her, hear all about the surprise and see how perfectly the ring suits her.”

The Wonder Weeks: How to Stimulate Your Baby’s Mental Development By Hetty van de Rijt, Ph.D. and Frans X. Plooij, Ph.D. This handy dandy guide describes the ten developmental changes (leaps) that babies experience during early years, and also details the three C’s (crying, clinging, cranky), the behaviors that precede the leaps. Each leap is labeled and described (categories, sequences, program, systems, etc.), with hints on helping your baby attain success through each new phase. This great guide helps soothe the fretful behavior and celebrate the acquisition of new skills, and pairs nicely with a wonderful app for your smartphone or tablet, too.

The New Father: A Dad’s Guide to the First Year By Armin Brott Focusing on all things dad, this guide gives new fathers a month-by-month description of baby development, and also provides the lowdown on baby development tailored to the modern guy. There’s even a section on parenting and technology. With cartoons from the New Yorker and plenty of humor, Brott’s book takes the worry out of parenthood, and lets new dads relax and enjoy their little ones.

The New StrongWilled Child By James Dobson There’s a reason that this 1978 book is still circulating, and remains one of the most requested parenting books at the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Parents trust it because it contains solid advice that works. The New StrongWilled Child is a great resource for the parent who says, “I love my kid, but I don’t like him/her very much right now.”

Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions to Adulthood By Lisa Damour, Ph.D. Damour explains that your teenaged daughter’s erratic, maddening behavior is actually a necessary step on her way to adulthood. Once seen on the page, the seven behaviors detailed in Untangled provide that “a-ha” moment to parents, and give faith that – much like those toddler tantrums – the stormy teenage years have sunny skies ahead.

Andrea Gerdeman 614.572.1249 agerdeman@cityscenemediagroup.com 46 • August/September 2017

The Zookeeper’s Wife is the true story of the owners of the Warsaw Zoo and how, during the Holocaust, they protected 300-plus Jews targeted by the Nazis by hiding them in empty animal cages. The zoo had been bombed, and zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski gave their new guests, refugees of the Warsaw Ghetto following the German invasion of Poland, animal names while applying human names to the remaining animals. The book – by writer, poet and naturalist Diane Ackerman – was released in 2007, and won the 2008 Orion Book Award. In spring 2017, an adaptation of the book starring Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar, The Martian) in the title role was released. www.dublinlifemagazine.com
