Olivia Biggs and family - The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology. Olivia works at the Licking County Health Department as a public information officer
That’s what happened when Olivia Biggs’s journey fell on a relentlessly rainy fall Saturday. Olivia jokes she’s the kind of person who brings three umbrellas wherever she goes so her hair doesn’t get wet, but with two adventurous sons and a day planned for exploration, it was too late to turn back. And, as it turns out, the day went swimmingly.
fitness nut, picked up her usual cucumbers and peppers, checking to see if her favorite pickle vendor was around. Olivia’s love for the community doesn’t just stop at food,
With the River Round Up complete and the cousins’ arrival in just a few hours, not even the rain could prevent the group from heading outside to pick apples and peaches, which, Olivia says, the kids were excited to do. Staring out through the orchard, alone with her cousin, husband and children, the world may have stopped for just a moment. Picking apples in the rain with the people you love – does it get any better?
The team of seven consisted of Olivia; her husband, Justin; their two children, Jenner, 6, and Roman, 3; Olivia’s cousin, Allison; and Allison’s children, Cooper, 7; and Bree, 4. With four children to three adults, the day was going to be full of energy, laughter and, because of the rain, maybe a little sogginess. First, though, the Biggs had to prepare for their cousins to arrive, and that meant stocking up on goodies. The night before the journey, the family went to Canal Market District and Market Street Soda Works to gift some delicious local popcorn to the cousins. Olivia, a health and 14

though, and caring for the community means more than buying local – it means volunteering, too. Just the next morning, she would be deep in the Licking River, participating in the Licking County River Round Up.

“I noticed how beautiful the fruit looked with the rain dripping off of it,” says Olivia. “Usually I’m one of those moms who brings the wipes and wipe it down but really, when I picked these, the rain had washed them so beautifully, I was able to pick them off the stem and hand it to the kids.”
Pick your own! Licking County has a number of farms, and that means an incredible array of fruit picking to choose from. Diamond Hill Farm, Utica Legend Hills Orchard & Country Store, Utica Lynd Fruit Farm, Pataskala Van Buren Acres, Hebron
With a renewed energy – and maybe a small desire to get out of the rain – the group headed to Velvet Ice Cream Co. in Utica. If there’s anything that can brighten up a rainy day, it’s ice cream. Roman decided on moose tracks, and Jenner on super friends, a swirl of vanilla and bubble gum. Ice cream has a funny way of reminding us of our childhood, and Jenner’s choice brings Olivia back to her own childhood in Michigan.

“He loves that flavor because that’s the flavor I chose when I was a child,” says Olivia. “He’s fallen in love with it. I think it’s funny he chooses that one.”
Sweet tooth still not satisfied? Try R & M Bakery, Susie’s Bistro & Bakery or Sweet 23. That should hold you over – for now.
With the kids at their own table, the parents were able to take time to choose where to head next. The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology has always been a needed stop in downtown Newark for residents, but with the new 30-foot, 4K SciDome projection planetarium, it’s become a destination for those visiting from outside the community, too. While they were deciding, however, the children were creating their own adventure. “The kids were having their own conversation, talking and laughing, and none of the adults were interacting with them, but they looked so cute and grown up with those conversations,” says Olivia. “Even

and her children were visiting for the weekend from Lake, Michigan, and though they’ve visited Olivia a number of times, they’ve never really experienced the county. Now that they had, they were blown away. “She’s from a very small town, so she’s pretty jealous of all we have to offer,” says Olivia. “I think her kids were happy with the big adventure; they were very grateful.”

though it was raining and we had to stay in the restaurant, the kids had so much fun.” The Works may be marketed to children, but it’s just as fun for adults as they watch the kids play as the outside world passes by. And after delicious ice cream from Velvet, the kids were certainly filled with energy, ready to play and create. “They played in the kids’ play area, dressing up as firefighters, serving us food, playing with magnets and pretending to be in a farmers market. Then we decided to build cars. We ended up building six cars, and the kids were able to race them down a race track. They each put their own finishing touches on the cars,” says Olivia. “We go to The Works often because it’s so close. Even if I just have a free hour, I can pop in.”
Are casual eateries your obsession? Do you only eat at locally owned spots? Licking County has all you need. Try Sunset Inn Restaurant in Hebron, Capuano’s Pizza House in Pataskala, Elliot’s Wood Fired Kitchen & Tap in Newark and Mai Chau on Prospect in Granville. Actually, we recommend you just walk through downtown Granville or Newark; good luck choosing!
With the day growing darker and four yawning children under age 8, the journey was nearing the end. Allison
And after venturing out in weather that she might never have before with a cousin unfamiliar with the area, Olivia was now seeing Licking County through a new, clearer lens. However, for Olivia, the best part of the community is still easy to see, and that’s the people that live here. “When I moved here, I was in high school, but I still remember just the friendliness and openness of the people welcoming my family,” says Olivia. “That’s something I never saw growing up. I just think that’s really special, that people go out of their way here to help other people.” Looking for more recommendations from Olivia and her adventurous, health-minded family? Here’s where she would have stopped – if only she had more than 24 hours. • Granville Farmers Market • Kick’s Mix Bookstore • Lynd Fruit Farm • Whit’s Frozen Custard
After all the fun at The Works, the group decided to grab a meal at Moe’s Original Bar B Que in Newark. The casual and delicious locally owned eatery is perfect for families, as the location features a kid-sized house complete with a kitchen where the kids can play.

couple decided to show family members Eileen and Marlin Keiter what their new home was all about. “We attend church downtown, we became involved with the Downtown Newark Association. We started becoming involved in activities downtown and, actually, it was Dick’s idea – the man who would absolutely never live in the city,” says Karen. “They’ve revitalized downtown Newark and he’s like, ‘Let’s check in to some of these apartments.’” At first, Karen admits, she wasn’t keen on the idea of leaving the large space that came with their country home. However, when she really thought about the move, she was sold. The pair enjoys downtown Newark restaurants and boutiques and seeing shows at The Midland Theatre. Why should the couple that enjoys being part of the hustle and bustle, be so far from just that? And, just like that, a new journey begins.

The Keiter/Birtcher journey started over breakfast at the Cottage Restaurant, the perfect midway point between downtown Newark and the Birtchers’ former home, serving American classics.
For a messy meal that’s worth the sticky hands, try the Lakeside Diner in Buckeye Lake. Or check out SteamRoller Bagel Sandwiches in Granville.
From there, the group headed straight for downtown Newark. Though the Keiters have visited Licking County countless times before, this was the perfect opportunity for the Birtchers to show off their new home in a different light. Now, the Birtchers wouldn’t have to worry about getting back in the car late in the evening after a relaxing day of shopping. They

wouldn’t have to leave the community they love early in the night for a long drive home. They were already home. “We’re closer to everything, so we have a lot more freedom to come and go,” says Karen. “We’re able to do more because we don’t have to spend so much time on the road. In that sense, we do feel younger.” Cornell Clothing Company was their next stop. For the Birtchers, buying local isn’t a fun new trend; it’s a way of life. And for Dick, it’s hard to pass up the opportunity to purchase a new pair

of suspenders. In Licking County, the 1910-founded Cornell’s is the perfect spot for men and women searching for vintage clothes from an established community spot. “When he bought suspenders at department stores, they’re really more for the younger guys – more looks than function. So he really needs something for function,” says Karen. “Cornell’s has all kinds of stuff. It’s like going back in time.” Then it was off to Buckeye Winery between retail stops. Nothing works up an appetite for lunch – and a glass of wine – quite like shopping. And with such an impressive swath of wineries in the county, it’s all too easy to treat yourself to a glass over lunch.

Next stop, however, was for the ladies. Gallery of Dreams is like no other; funky jewelry and boho-chic clothing, the name doesn’t lie. It’s perfect for a girls’ day out. “When Eileen and Marlin come to town, we have to stop there,” says Karen. “It’s a really neat shop with so much to see, so that’s always a muststop – even though, normally, we do that without the guys.”

Licking County has no lack of local boutiques. Try Green Velvet in Granville – you might even pick up an item from the other side of the world. Is your closet full, but your walls empty? Antique art and furniture abounds at Apple Crate Antiques.

By the time night fell, the Keiters and Birtchers retired to Elements to enjoy the newly renovated patio complete with fire pit. After a long but fun day of relaxing and exploring Newark through a fresh set of eyes – as residents, not visitors – it was the perfect time to reflect. The Birtchers wouldn’t have to muster the energy to drive back to the country. Everything they needed was right here. Everything comes full circle. The couple who never thought they would live in a city is now here with the knowledge that smaller square footage in a house is a small price to pay to finally come home. And, for Karen, a retired teacher of 30 years, there’s an even greater feeling of coming home: the building they’ve moved into in downtown Newark is a renovated schoolhouse.

like at the jewelry store, the fact that everything is made right there.”
it’s high time for the Birtchers to buy a couple bicycles. While they used to drive to and from home, with brandnew bikes it will be easy to ride over to Canal Market District for some groceries, Linnet’s Flowers on the Square for a treat for Karen or to Horns Hill Park to lay out a blanket for a picnic. That means a stop inside Downtown Cycles to pick out the perfect fit. The Birtchers, well-known by local business owners, are thrilled they moved downtown not just because they’re closer to a lot of the action, but because they’re closer to the people who make Licking County what it is. And Downtown Cycles isn’t the only place where they’re greeted by name; Pugh’s Designer Jewelers, the next stop for the Birtchers, know the couple well. By now, it should be obvious that the Birtchers care deeply about shopping local. And while that may be a unique feature in other communities, here in Licking County, it’s just the thing to do. “We really are about staying local and helping the local community,” says Karen. “They hire local people and, 22

“If you think about it, I spent my entire life in a school building; going to college, then teaching,” says Karen. “There’s just a lot of character; wooden doors, all the wood floor, all the lockers are still in the hallways. There’s even a chalkboard on the wall.”
On their way to Elements Local Bistro at the DoubleTree by Hilton, one stop simply had to be made: the Louis Sullivan Bank Building, and future home of Explore Licking County. The gorgeous former bank on the corner of Third and Main streets is filled to the brim with history and, as the Birtchers know, it’s nearly impossible to walk by without stopping. Sharing the love with the Keiters is simply second nature.
No matter where you stay in Licking County, you’re guaranteed to feel right at home immediately. Try the newly renovated Hampton Inn or the Courtyard by Marriott Newark. Looking for a bed and breakfast? The award-winning Welsh Hills Inn or the Orchard House Bed and Breakfast, where you’ll likely be able to watch a wedding from your window, will welcome you. And those looking for a resort experience complete with live entertainment and a golf course should try The Trout Club.

why instead of heading out somewhere with his wife, Lindsay; friends from college, Lauren Akin and Jackie Mayor; their significant others, Travis and Andy; and Akin kids Dylan and Sadie; Lucas decided to buy food – local, of course – and cook it in his home. They headed out to the Granville Farmers Market for a fresh, local breakfast. “It’s what I typically do on a daily basis; it is truly our lifestyle,” says Lucas. “We buy from local farmers, so it makes sense for us to be able to show them what’s in season here now and cook for them.” After breakfast on any given day, it’s not unusual for the whole family to head to their “secret creeking spot.” With Posie, 4, and Tillie, 1 and a half, there’s nothing more exciting than having a place just your own. In Licking County, where gorgeous outdoor landscapes are just beyond every horizon, the hardest part of finding your own secret spot is crossing your threshold. 26

“My family has been visiting that particular area for years and years; it used to be a public natural spring pool, now it’s just hiking trails and natural waterways,” says Lucas. “The great thing about it is that we can walk out our back door and hit it. In Posie’s eyes, she might think of it as ‘my secret spot’ because nobody is ever there. She loves it.”

Posie’s spot is her secret to keep, but worry not; you can find your own secret spot off the beaten path at the Licking River or Lobdell Reserve. For kids – and plenty of adults – there’s nothing better than turning over rocks to discover hidden frogs, crayfish and bugs.
That outdoorsy spirit was instilled in Posie and Tillie at a young age; Lucas himself finds it easy to get away in Licking County with so many trails and beautiful natural spots. And, with more than 40 miles of multi-use explorelc.org

think,” says Lucas. “When I’m being selfish, I jump out my back door and within two or three miles there are seven places to hike.” Creeking time was over, so the group left the secret spot (stealthily, of course) to head over to DankHouse Brewing Company. Those unfamiliar to the county may think a brewery is incompatible with children, but that shows they don’t know DankHouse. In fact, Licking County is rife with spots that are a blast for kids, but where the adults can enjoy themselves, too. “I think there’s a shift happening with the way people are looking at bars and restaurants, and places that serve adult beverages. People are far more accepting that, yeah, sometimes you do have a beer with your children,” says Lucas. “It’s great that parents can come rest, and they’re not in this stuffy situation where the kids have to sit still. It’s real life.”

Speaking of places where mom and dad can kick their feet up and let the kids go wild, the Atwood journey couldn’t end anywhere else but Lucas’s own Snapshots Lounge. that to me and it was such a blessing,” says Lucas. “They kick started me. It’s an experience that I’ll always hold dear to my heart.” And now, his business is a successful staple in the Licking County food scene with another venture on the horizon. Looking back on his journey with his close friends and family, it’s clear that Lucas is just one part of what makes the county so special – people who are passionate about their craft, and sharing it with others. “It is an honor and a privilege to serve this community in the way that I do,” he says. “It’s a lot of hard work and it’s not glamorous sometimes, and it can be a giant pain in the ass. But to get up and do something you’re passionate about? It’s a dream.”

that he opened the restaurant at age 27. In fact, it’s the family profession. “It’s a passion. I’ve been in the kitchen since I was 2 years old,” says Lucas. “My dad was a chef at the firehouse in Columbus. It’s in my blood to entertain, and that’s what I do for a living now.” Snapshots is designed up and down with the family in mind. Pull into the driveway, walk in the front door, “it feels like a house party,” says Lucas. The whole goal of the restaurant, Lucas says, is to spread authenticity. but private, which lets parents watch their kids play as they eat and talk, just like they would in their own home. Snapshots is the perfect representation of Licking County as a whole: real, comfortable and inclusive. “My motto has always been that kindness matters,” Lucas says. “The kinder you are, the bigger congregation you build.” Kindness, as a matter of fact, is what enabled Lucas to start his own restaurant. The owners of Early Birds Breakfast, where he worked for a year, pushed him to carve his own path. “They got me focusing on me and what I needed to do for myself. They gave

Janice LoRaso, family and friends - Downtown Granville. Janice is managing director at The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology
may be familiar with the BeardGreen Cemetery there. They may have stopped to read one headstone in particular. “Benjamin Green, Sen.,” it reads, “Died Sept 28, 1833/Aged 78 y 5 m & 2 ds.” He would never know it, of course, but more than 200 years later, he is still being honored by two of his descendants, Janice and her sister, Jennifer Barton. But that doesn’t begin to tell the whole story of Janice’s deep connection in the county, because Benjamin Green is only on her mother’s side. Just over 100 years after the Greens moved into the county, Janice’s father’s side of the family was laying their own Licking County foundations. Her great-grandmother’s sister, Annie, and Annie’s husband, Max Mehlborn, were moving to the United States from Scotland. The Mehlborns would manage two hotels in Pittsburgh then the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, where they met John Sutphin Jones, once-owner of the Bryn Du Mansion and builder of the Granville Inn and 32

shoveling coal and getting into trouble with the maintenance men. Though she grew up with the stories of the Granville Inn and her maternal ancestors, it wasn’t until recently that she really began to listen.
You don’t have to go back generations to receive incredible hospitality in the county. If you’re hoping for a less traditional stay, try camping at the Lazy River at Granville or the Buckeye Lake KOA, settle into your own home away from home at Studio 555, or go for the traditional bed and breakfast experience at Elizabeth on Main in Johnstown or WillowBrooke Bed ‘n Breakfast in Alexandria.
Meanwhile, Janice’s grandfather moved from Scotland to go to Denison University, and stayed with Max and Annie. Time passed, as it tends to do, and Janice’s grandfather would assume management of the inn at just 25 and have two sons. Janice’s father grew up working for the Granville Inn,

“I really became interested in genealogy in the ’90s. That’s one of the things – people always tell you all those stories when you’re growing up, and it starts to mean something different to you when you start connecting the dots,” says Janice. “My sister and I are very proud of our history.” It’s impossible to condense 200 years of family history into about 350 words, but that about brings us up to speed. Similarly, it’s hard for someone with such a history to pick a daylong journey that showcases her rich lineage in the county. After graduating from Ohio University, Janice moved far from Licking County – as far as she could. She spent 12 years in California. When it was time to start a family with her husband, Carlo, there was no question of what to do next.
The Dawes Arboretum
“I couldn’t think of any place but coming home,” she says. And that’s where Wendy and Erik Lindskog come in. After 30 years spent outside Licking County, Wendy and Erik are moving back, and Janice found it to be the perfect opportunity to reintroduce her good friends to the community. It was a true homecoming especially for Wendy, who is battling breast cancer. Through the journey, Janice hoped to showcase to the Lindskogs that Licking County has the same spirit of those three “H’s” – history, heritage and hospitality – that it had when they were in high school.
Granville
The first stop for Janice, Carlo, Erik and Wendy was Early Birds Breakfast. Why? Hospitality, of course. “It’s the best breakfast in Licking County,” says Janice. “The sisters who run it – Sara and Elizabeth (Ernest) – you’re so warmly greeted and cared for there, and the food is delicious. That’s how I wanted to set the tone for the day.” The hospitality continued at Dawes Arboretum. Like many spots around Licking County, including the city of Pataskala, city of Newark, village of Granville and the Buckeye Lake region, Dawes is seeing major revitalization and positive change. The

“There was always an appreciation for the arts among individuals, but I think there’s now a greater appreciation for them,” Janice says. “With The Midland Theatre, Thirty One West and Denison Art Space, the gallery that I curate, plus what we do with the Cultural Alliance, we help advocate for each other and celebrate each others’ events.” As the long day was winding down, it was time for something close to home. Very close to home. They had stopped at Dawes for her mother’s side of the family, but what about her father’s? That means it was time for the Granville Inn, where Janice’s father all but grew up.
Kussmaul Gallery
Lindskogs, Janice says, were shocked – because Dawes is the site of one of the Lindskogs’ first dates. “Wendy’s husband mentioned to me, ‘I wouldn’t have come here if you wouldn’t have brought us. I’m completely blown away by all the changes,’” says Janice. “The arboretum has a very long history, but their conservation work, which is not as well-known as the natural beauty of the place – that’s what I really wanted to take them out for.”
All over Licking County, history is entangled with natural beauty, as it is at Dawes Arboretum. For those who love a healthy mix of natural and human history, the Great Circle Earthworks, Octagon Earthworks and Wright Earthworks can’t be missed. Another standout spot? Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve.
Before heading off to Granville, of course, the group would stop at the cemetery where Janice’s ancestors are buried. Because she and her sister only discovered their connection to the cemetery within the last seven years, the excitement surrounding it is still quite fresh. “There’s something about that cemetery I love; older stone and more 34

intentional carvings and the symbolic elements – they’re really poetic,” says Janice. “The older stones will say ‘loving wife and mother.’” A journey filled with poetic rediscovering, the next stops were Kussmaul Gallery and James Young Fine Art. Kussmaul was previously the site of the Granville Times – not just the newspaper, but where Janice and Wendy would visit years earlier to pick up books and materials for school. “One of the most famous things were these red assignment books that you had to have every year – I’m so sad I threw mine all away,” says Janice. “One of the things I wanted to do was go back with Wendy and say, ‘Remember the red assignment books?’” As for James Young, Janice holds a special place in her heart for his work. He goes by James, but, for Janice, it’s weird to call him anything but Jay. The two grew up together. Their grandfathers were friends. His mother was Janice’s algebra teacher. And now, years later, he’s using historic Licking County sites as inspiration in his work. Through her work with the Cultural Alliance of Licking County, Janice has noticed an uptick in appreciation for the arts across the county. And now, Licking County is being recognized as a place with an impactful art scene by visitors as well.

“My dad just has amazing memories of everything about it,” says Janice. “When Denison was going to rehab it, we took my dad in and did a videotaped history from the attic to the basement.” Janice admits that, because of her family history at the Granville Inn, she always gets great treatment there. However, she knows everyone who stops in to eat or stay is treated with the same level of respect – just like family. With that, the journey came to a close. And though Janice has a special kind of connection to the community, she knows her passion for Licking County isn’t unique. New residents, old residents and visitors alike share a commitment that is rarely found elsewhere; no matter how long your family has been visiting or living in the county, it immediately feels like home. “If you’re connected to Licking County, you’re deeply connected,” says Janice. “There are still a lot of people here that consider themselves natives. We’re just fiercely proud of our community and our history.” If Janice LoRaso had all the time in the world, her journey would be much longer – and filled with food. Here are just a few spots Janice would’ve hit with more hours in the day. • Market Street Soda Works • Nutcracker Family Restaurant • Snapshots Lounge • The Midland Theatre • The Works • Thirty One West • Watt’s in Utica

He was called the “father of skyscrapers” and the “father of modernism.” He was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright. He is known for his distinct architectural style – modern and functional, but with ornate details. He coined the term “form follows function,” and his buildings reflect that. Like many famous artists he died early, bankrupt and with little recognition.
County – Newark, specifically – lays claim to one of Sullivan’s final and most spectacular works.
Louis H. Sullivan is known internationally for many things, but here in Licking County, his name holds special weight. That’s because Licking
The Home Building Association Company building, now known simply as the Louis Sullivan Bank Building, was one of just eight banks built across the Midwest late in Sullivan’s life. The eight buildings, all of which still stand today, are known as Sullivan’s Jewel Boxes, and Licking County’s jewel shines bright. Though it was built more than 100 years ago and has been home to a swath of businesses, its luster hasn’t faded even for the oldest of residents.
“I think the most important thing that we take away from this renovation, is that even 100 years later, the people of Newark and Licking County just have a genuine love for this building,” says Dan. “There is a very deep-seated sense of pride of what that building means and what it is.” Even in Newark, where beauty is easy to find in every nook and cranny of the community, it’s hard not to notice – and stop to admire – the splendor that is the Louis Sullivan Building. Dan himself is certainly not immune to its allure. Residents of a certain age may remember walking by when the building was owned by the Union Trust Company, Sanitary Meat Market or Symon’s Best Jewelry Company. Younger residents may remember it as a Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association building or perhaps as Tiffany’s Ice Cream Parlor. The memories created within the building’s four walls could fill several books. And yet, since 2007, the building’s doors were shuttered. Sunlight shone through the glass tile mosaic, exposing an empty room. The building, once designed for all to enjoy, went dark. But not for long. In 2013, the building was gifted to the Licking County Foundation by a county native. Even for someone who has long since moved and could have sold such a building, donation to an organization that would treat it the way it deserved was the only option. Since then, the building has been a site for reimagination, rejuvenation and, ultimately, renovation. And once that renovation is complete, the doors will reopen as the new home of Explore Licking County. The light will fill in. Finally, after more than a decade, the sounds of laughing visitors will pour into the street. The community will meet in the Louis Sullivan Building – just as Sullivan intended 100 years ago. “It will have magic to it again, and that has been so important to the Licking County Foundation, as well as me,” says Dan. “We’re the right people to

breathe life into it again and make it the social gathering place for visitors and residents of this community that it was 100 years ago.” The fifth of Sullivan’s eight banks will once again hold true to Sullivan’s famed quote – “What the people are within, the buildings express without.” Licking County residents have not forgotten that sentiment, and the Licking County Foundation, in partnership with Explore Licking County, are dedicated not just to renovating the building, but restoring it to its original glory. And once the restoration is complete, it will be filled with minds that would make Sullivan proud. “I think that Sullivan challenged the status quo and I think that’s kind of what we do, too,” says Dan. “That is sort of our organization’s battle cry. We refuse to do things the same way we’ve always done it. That was Sullivan’s deal, too.” There’s no telling what the corner of Third and Main will look like in another 100 years, or any of Licking County. But the people who are here now are doing their best to ensure not only that history is preserved and appreciated, but that it provides a tailwind for the community to move forward. “I hope that within their story, whatever story they’re telling in 100 years, that there is a little piece that includes us,” says Dan. “I hope the doors are still open and there’s fun and laughter and everything you want a social community space to have. That’s what I would hope for in 100 years. In fact, I hope that for all of the county.” To donate to the renovation efforts for the Louis Sullivan Bank Building, visit www.thelcfoundation.org/sullivan.

Expressed Without • Of the eight banks, Newark’s Louis Sullivan Building is the only one that Sullivan himself signed. His name can be read across the glass mosaic squares today. • Conrad Schmitt Studios, Inc., a Wisconsin restoration and conservation company, will be restoring the building’s art in the same way it was created – by hand. • Newark’s building is unique from the others in that it is mostly a terra cotta exterior as opposed to a mix of brick and terra cotta. Its two-story design is also out of the norm.
• Ohio has two of Sullivan’s banks; here in Newark and one in Sidney. • Sullivan was one of 10 American architects chosen to build a major structure for the White City at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. Much to the other architects’ annoyance, Sullivan was the only one to use color and build in a nontraditional style. It was clear he made the right choice, as his building received three medals from the Parisian decorative arts museum Les Arts Décoratifs.

“I kept telling everybody, ‘We’re just going to get a bigger boat,’” J-me tells Carol. “Lo and behold, we did get a bigger boat. We have a true sternwheeler – an 88-foot sternwheeler – that holds about 60 to 70 passengers.” The Queen of the Lake III will be something to travel for, especially because J-me estimates theirs is the only true active sternwheeler in the area. Though visitors may not get to experience the original Crystal Ballroom, they’ll get a firsthand perspective of what it was like to be on the lake decades ago. That old world experience is perfect for summer. Fourth of July and Memorial Day are major times to head to Buckeye Lake, board a boat, and break out the tube or water skis.
More on the Lake With the dam project now complete, a residential sidewalk and 12-foot-wide multi-use trail, the lake will be more accessible not just by water, but by foot and bicycle as well.
Photos courtesy of Buckeye Lake Historical Society
“People could come in on the interurban train in the beginning and, of course, we had a freeway in the ’50s, so that brought in a lot of people,” J-me Braig, executive director of The Greater Buckeye Lake Historical Society, tells Carol. “They came from Cleveland, south down on the river; maybe Indiana. … We have stories of people coming from New York and renting a cottage, and they’d stay all summer long.” Above all else, Buckeye Lake’s sternwheelers were true sights to behold. The Queen of the Lake featured a ballroom and piano, and took private trips of around 60 passengers to various parts of the lake. Then there was an even grander sternwheeler; a triple-decker that held 42

300 passengers. Unfortunately, not even Buckeye Lake could hold steady through the Great Depression. Though Buckeye Lake went noticeably quieter for decades, its dancing shoes wouldn’t be hung up for long.
Old and New Converge Now, generations later, Licking County residents and visitors alike will once again be able to experience Buckeye Lake as it once was. A 48-foot pontoon boat was purchased in 2009, when the Queen of the Lake II toured with visitors. That, too, saw its misfortunes due to the dam remediation. Licking County residents know, though, the lake is never down for long.
explorelc.org
“You can have a nice, leisurely ride along the lake – four miles long. That’s really unique in the state of Ohio to ride your bike, walk or jog for that kind of a distance,” says Mike Fornataro, director of Buckeye Lake 2030, pointing out the paths to Carol along the shore as they speed by. And, in the winter, the lake transforms. From a summer party lake to a winter getaway, the lake offers ice fishing, snowmobiling and the annual Buckeye Lake Winterfest. Fireworks will shoot off over the lake at dawn, Benny the Bass will decide whether an early spring will come, and art shows and specials will heat up the Jan. 2527 weekend. In the near future, visitors can hope to see the construct of a new pier, more entertainment and a revitalized, bustling Buckeye Lake. All things considered, perhaps we aren’t so different from those partying at the lake 90 years ago.
Whether you spend a day, a weekend, or live waterside at Buckeye Lake – you will find life here to be very special.
Winterfest at Buckeye Lake Yacht Club January 26th - Fireworks over the lake kick-off the fun following the opening with Benny the Bass. Food & Drink Specials and FUN are the order of the day.
July 4th Boat Parade – show your creative patriotism and love of the lake by decorating your boat and joining on a ride down the lake.
Tour of Homes – Spend a beautiful day on Buckeye Lake touring some of the amazing homes.
Tour de Buckeye Lake – Join us for a 12-, 25- or 38-mile tour around beautiful Buckeye Lake. Enjoy diverse scenery through villages, communities and farmlands around the lake.

“When I grew up in Newark, I was all over Newark on my bike,” says Sarah. “And kids are still like that; just riding around the streets of Newark.” Though the skatepark is new, the desire for one in the community is not – a fact Garrett himself attests to. At one of the very first community meetings when the idea was floated, Chief Connell fully embraced it. “He said, ‘Sarah, we’ve wanted a skatepark here for 25 years; the kids need their place,’” says Sarah. “They need a place where they can just go have fun and enjoy each other and help each other and mentor each other. I don’t think he thought it was possible, so I was like, ‘We’re going to do this.’”
Everett Skatepark Rendering
Licking County has always been the perfect place to make an adventure out of an ordinary day, and it’s now even better for younger visitors and residents. The new skatepark at Everett Park doesn’t just look state-of-the-art; community members, including Sarah, have lovingly planned every facet of the park in order to give everyone the skatepark they need, whether they’re arriving on two wheels or four.
The skatepark, which is designed by Spohn Ranch out of California with help by local Robertson Construction Services, will feature everything athletes love, including the standards like stairs, ramps and rails, and the not-so-standard, like a full pipe. Sarah and her team opened up a meeting to potential skatepark users, and it became clear that the passion of Licking County’s adult residents is mirrored in its youth. About 120 skateboarders and BMX and scooter riders turned up to make their voices heard. Then, at the start of 2018, Sarah held a second meeting; this time explore licking county

Needless to say, it went well. “That was an awesome meeting because the look on the faces of those kids; they had no idea,” says Sarah. “That’s the reaction we wanted, just that they’re over the moon.”
“We had meetings with the city of Newark, Newark Police Department and (Police Chief) Barry Connell, the city engineer and just people from the community,” Sarah says to Garrett. “We worked with the schools, we worked with the city, we worked with the gardeners and all of the different parties that are involved and available.”

with a smaller group of about a dozen, to show off what Spohn Ranch had come up with based on the feedback.
However, parents can rest assured that the park is safe, too. The park features a shaded bleacher area for spectators and a live stream of the park can be viewed online, which serves many purposes. Visitors from all over the state can decide; is the park too wet or crowded, or are the conditions just right to head into Licking County for the day?
Check Out the Park Watch the live stream of the skatepark at Everett Park at www.newarkohio.net.
Everett Park features a picnic pavilion, community gardening facilities, playground and dog park, making it a gathering point for the entire community. Plus, it’s in the perfect location, with access throughout Newark via bike paths.
explorelc.org
Licking County residents have always cared deeply about their community, but with the caliber of people at the helm throughout county organizations, Sarah feels inspired and supported in new endeavors. With several factors at play, the new Everett Park is the result of the perfect storm, she says. “There’s something for everyone here; it’s terrific,” says Sarah. “I really am always heartened by the partnerships that people are so great about that ‘Yeah, let’s do it,’ kind of thing. I’m really grateful to the city of Newark, really grateful to Spohn Ranch and Robertson Construction.” Licking County’s skateboarders and BMX and scooter riders no longer have to travel far from home to get to a great park as Garrett once did. Now, what may be the best skatepark in the state may lie just a short distance from home. And they’re sure to make some new friends as others in central Ohio travel to Everett Park. “Everett Park is going to serve families, it’s going to serve babies, it’s going to serve parents, teenagers, senior citizens. And it’s going to be a real hub for the community,” says Sarah. “I think the skatepark will attract people from all over the place.”
