As we recognize and celebrate more than 45 years as a Chamber of Commerce, we invite you to the 2023-2024 Sunbury Big Walnut Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory & Community Guide to help you become better acquainted with this community we love. The Sunbury Big Walnut Chamber of Commerce has been through and seen many changes in the community since its inception in 1977. More recently, our community has seen tremendous growth which shows in the expanding school district, the housing developments that have sprung up, and the new commerce that continues to arrive in our community.

Sunbury officially became a city in 2021, and the Big Walnut community continues to be highlighted as the place to be in Delaware County. The Chamber of Commerce strives to preserve the charm and quaintness of our community while still encouraging the development of a local infrastructure that will support existing and new businesses. Our mission is to foster, support and promote the business environment in our community.

This directory is yet another way in which we try to build a bridge between the businesses and the residents. The hope is that you find this informative and that you learn something new about the area you live and work in. We invite you to explore the parks and trails, visit the square and businesses surrounding it, both in Sunbury and Galena. Check out a game or attend a play at the new Big Walnut High School. No matter what you do, do it well and do it in the Big Walnut community.

Thank you, Nancy Crawford Executive Director, Sunbury Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce

Forty-five years (and lots of benefits!)

Chamber celebrates a milestone

Following a successful 1976 Fourth of July celebration in Sunbury, it was discussed during an informal conversation of involved locals that the community might need a chamber of commerce or civic association to help raise money for future events instead of soliciting donations on the sidewalk.

“Because there was not a large enough volunteer base it was decided to have a chamber of commerce which would also be a civic association,” Polly Horn, a local historian, says.

Due to an article in The Sunbury News, 30 people met on July 28, 1977, in JonJon’s Restaurant at 571 W. Cherry Street, now P-J’s, to explore forming a local chamber of commerce. The goal of the group was to promote a unified community spirit in the Big Walnut Area, hence the name Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce. Sunbury was added to the beginning on the title to distinguish a location.

“Now the Sunbury Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce has grown big enough to afford their own facility,” Horn says. “They have done so by adding new things to the tried and true things the community expects of them. Those which do not work are discarded but those which do become community traditions.”
