Moving Forward, Maintaining History
Two town squares created in New England style over 200 years ago
City of Sunbury
Sunbury was founded in 1816 and quickly established itself as a stagecoach town. The mayor at that time built an inn at the intersection of two major stagecoach routes. The first coach arrived in 1820 and stagecoaches rolled through until 1873, when the booming railroad industry took over as the major mode of transportation.
The town continued to evolve; most recently becoming a city in 2021 after doubling in population over the last 20 years.
In 1816, a town square was set aside for public use. In 1868, the first two floors of Town Hall were constructed to be a school, which it was for three years. It was then occupied by The Masons for 91 years. Over the years, the Town Hall served as a village office building, jail, fire station, bank and community library. In 2002, it was renovated for use as a community room and village offices to maintain its continuous community use.
Sunbury is three miles from I-71 and just 10 miles from Polaris in Westerville. Sunbury offers a blend of historic Craftsman and brick homes to brand new construction for the growing population moving into the area. www.sunburyohio.org Town Hall 51 E. Village of Galena
Galena Square was originally surrounded by buildings on all four sides and the New England style village square has been the focal point ever since. The village now boasts outdoor opportunities like fishing, canoeing, walking and biking trails, and plenty of nature alongside a quaint retail hub in the heart of town. www.galenaohio.gov 109 Harrison St. P.O.
