QMy daughter is 17 years old and has never been vaccinated against HPV, but I’m worried about the risks of cervical cancer. Is it worth her getting the vaccine now?
A. The HPV vaccine is a critical tool for cervical cancer prevention. We know that HPV is the underlying cause of most cervical cancers, and this virus is extremely prevalent. The vaccine protects against several strains of the virus that are most high risk for leading to malignancy. Researchers have shown that the vaccine is most effective if given before exposure to HPV, which is why it is given in the pediatric population. However, it can still work even for women who have previously had abnormal Pap smears. Getting vaccinated early is an amazing way to protect against developing future cervical cancer. Jordan Staton, MD
Q. I recently found out that type 1 diabetes runs in my husband’s family, and I want to be prepared in case my kids develop it. What are some early signs to look out for?
A. Increased thirst, increased urination, as well as signs and symptoms of dehydration – such as loose skin and dry mucous membranes (eyes and mouth) – may be how some learn they have type 1 diabetes. This scenario can be a presentation of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is life threatening and should be managed in the hospital. Other symptoms of type 1 diabetes may be loss of muscle mass, unintentional weight loss, fatigue, irritability, blurry
vision, and hunger despite eating an adequate amount of food.
Patients with type 2 diabetes can have similar symptoms – increased thirst, increased urination, dehydration, hunger, fatigue, irritability, and blurry vision. Some patients may also experience symptoms such as numbness and tingling in their feet or slow wound healing.

Q. My elderly father recently had a scare with a blood clot in his leg. It was treated with anticoagulants and he seems to be okay, but I’m wondering if there is something else we should do?
A. Every blood clot is unique to the person in whom the clot developed. Anticoagulation alone may not be the only answer. A patient is best served by being evaluated by a specialist who treats deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). There is a range from mild to severe when it comes to blood clots. In severe cases, there are surgical and endovascular procedures that can be performed to lessen the impact of the DVT or PE for the chronic conditions that can develop. As an example, if a patient presents to the ER with a swollen leg and is diagnosed with a DVT, often an anticoagulant is prescribed. That is a crucial first step, however, the evaluation should not stop there. A referral to a vascular specialist will determine if additional therapy to remove the clot is warranted. Q. I was recently diagnosed with psoriasis, and I’m wondering if there are any simple lifestyle changes I can make to improve my symptoms?
A. If your psoriasis affects your scalp, you may need to use a medicated shampoo like Head & Shoulders twice per week – even if your psoriasis is not always active. If you start to develop other symptoms like aching or joint pain, it’s best to be seen by a rheumatologist to check for psoriatic arthritis. Many people ask me about diet changes to improve their psoriasis. There are no specific diet changes that have been shown consistently to help psoriasis patients; however, focusing on a low glycemic load diet (avoid white bread, rice, refined sugar) and losing weight if you are overweight can help many people.
Deanna G. Brown, MD, FAAD
Q. My teenaged son plays football and recently got tackled pretty hard. He didn’t get hit in the head, but I’m still worried that he might need to take a break from the sport. Any advice?
A. The most common cause of a sports related concussion (SRC) is a direct blow to the head, and American football is the most at-risk sport for athletes to sustain a concussion. However, SRCs may also occur from an indirect, impulsive force that is transmitted to the head and may not involve a direct blow to the head at all. With any SRC, it is wise to see your primary care physician or a sports medicine physician to evaluate any symptoms and develop a graduated plan for recovery and return to the sport. If symptoms worsen or the athlete exhibits focal neurological defects, then you should go to the emergency room.

TheSurprising
ects ofStress
By Rinn Smith
In today's fast-paced world, stress has become an inevitable part of daily life for many of us. We know that stress can take a toll on our mental well-being, but it can have a profound impact on our physical health as well. Here, we take a look at the intricate connection between stress and physical health, with helpful information from local medical professionals.
f
E
22 healthscopemag.com
What Is Stress?
Before delving into the physical effects of stress, it's important to understand what stress actually is and how it affects the body. Stress is the body's natural response to perceived threats or challenges, which triggers the "fight or flight" response. When fight or flight is activated, our bodies are flooded with hormones like cortisol and adrenaline which are designed to protect us from harm, quickly preparing our bodies to either escape or defend ourselves.
The fight or flight response is very helpful when facing a truly dangerous situation, but when the stress response is triggered more often and by situations that are not actually dangerous, it can cause a sharp decline in quality of life. Chronic stress, characterized by prolonged exposure to stressors without adequate relief or coping mechanisms, disrupts the body's natural balance and often causes physiological changes that can impact various organ systems.
Stress and Your Cardiovascular System
Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. According to the American Heart Association, stress can cause high blood pressure, which in turn causes an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Additionally, chronic stress often leads people to seek unhealthy coping mechanisms such as smoking, overeating, and a sedentary lifestyle, all of which further exacerbate the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction.
Henry Cheng, MD Cardiologist,
The Chattanooga Heart Institute
Dr. Henry Cheng, a cardiologist with The Chattanooga Heart Institute, says, “We see a lot of patients with symptoms and consequences of stress, such as palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and hearing blood flow in their ears. After running tests to make sure the heart is okay, I recommend patients see a therapist or psychiatrist to help them control or reduce their stress and anxiety. Cardiac symptoms from stress usually improve or resolve once the underlying stress is controlled. Severe stress can weaken the heart and lead to stress-induced cardiomyopathy, which is generally reversible but can lead to hospitalization. A primary care physician or cardiologist may start the process of referring patients to a therapist or psychiatrist, as well as prescribe anti-anxiety medication to help start the process of relieving stress and its effects on the heart.”
Stress and Your Immune System
The immune system plays a crucial role in defending the body against pathogens and maintaining overall health. However, chronic stress can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and illness. High levels of stress hormones, particularly cortisol, suppress immune function by inhibiting the production of lymphocytes – the white blood cells that normally help fight off infections. This makes your body more susceptible to illnesses and makes it harder to recover from infections.
healthscopemag.com 23
Stress and Your Digestive System
Stress can wreak havoc on the digestive system, leading to a range of gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, and more. When your body enters the fight or flight response, digestive functions are inhibited to conserve energy for more pressing needs like running or fighting. In normal conditions, the digestive system will function normally after the danger has been dealt with and the stress hormones have run their course. With chronic stress, the digestive system is interrupted more often and can have a much harder time recovering.
Stress and Your Endocrine System
The endocrine system, which regulates hormone production and secretion, is intricately linked to the stress response. Chronic stress can dysregulate the endocrine system, leading to hormonal imbalances that contribute to a variety of health problems. For example, prolonged exposure to stress hormones like cortisol can disrupt the balance of other hormones such as insulin, thyroid hormones, and reproductive hormones, increasing the risk of conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, and infertility.
Stress and Your Musculoskeletal System
Another way the fight or flight response prepares us for danger is by causing muscles to tighten, which is meant to help guard against injury and allow us to be more agile. With chronic stress, prolonged muscle tension can create musculoskeletal problems like tension headaches, neck and back pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, and general discomfort.

Stress and Your Respiratory System
Stress can impact respiratory function, exacerbating conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). During periods of stress, individuals may experience shallow breathing or hyperventilation, which can trigger respiratory symptoms and worsen existing respiratory conditions. Moreover, chronic stress can also impair lung function and weaken respiratory muscles, making it more challenging to breathe efficiently.
Stress and Your Skin
The skin is highly sensitive to stress, often reflecting internal imbalances through various skin conditions. Chronic stress can exacerbate existing skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis, as well as contribute to the development of new skin problems. Stress-induced changes in hormone levels, immune function, and inflammation can disrupt the skin's barrier function, leading to increased susceptibility to infections, irritation, and premature aging. Additionally, impacts on the immune system can show up as slow-healing wounds, which increases the risk of infections and scarring.
Stress and Your Vision
Stress affects vision in several ways, including pupil dilation. In most cases, vision will return to normal after the stressful period is over. With chronic stress, however, excessive stress hormones can cause symptoms of vision loss which include dry eyes, eye strain, and eye twitching. Stress can also cause visual distortions like blurred vision, double vision, tunnel vision, and floaters. In some cases, stress-related inflammation can also cause diseases like glaucoma and optic neuropathy.
By understanding the physical effects of stress and adopting healthy coping mechanisms, reducing exposure to stressors, and prioritizing self-care, people with chronic stress can mitigate these negative effects and lead healthier, more resilient lives. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor about treatment options. From medications to lifestyle adjustments, there are many ways to address chronic stress and reduce its impact on your life and your health.

The Low-Down on Lyme Disease
By Rinn Smith
Lyme disease, a bacterial illness that is transmitted to humans via tick bites, is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States with roughly 63,000 confirmed cases reported to the CDC in 2022 alone. As the weather begins to warm up this spring and people get back to outdoor activities – like hiking, gardening, and even just walking through tall grass – instances of tick bites and subsequent Lyme disease infections are likely to increase. Read on to learn more about the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of Lyme disease so you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe in the outdoors.

How is Lyme Disease
Transmitted?
Lyme disease is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks, commonly known as deer ticks, which latch on to skin and transfer bacteria into the bloodstream in the process. Not all ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), but those that do can spread the disease if they remain attached for an extended period – typically over 24 hours.
Top View
Underside
Early Symptoms (3-30 days after tick bite)
Erythema migrans (EM) rash: Often the first sign of Lyme disease, this typically appears as a red, bullseye-shaped rash around the site of the tick bite. While this is a common symptom, it does not necessarily appear in every case of Lyme disease. It is very common to have a small bump or redness (similar to mosquito bites) immediately after a tick bite, but if the irritation lasts longer than a day or two it can be a sign of infections like Lyme disease and should be checked by a doctor.
Flu-like symptoms: Fever, chills, fatigue, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and body aches are common in the early stages of Lyme disease, and can occur with or without the telltale bullseye rash. If you develop flu-like symptoms after finding a tick on your body, see your doctor for testing to rule out Lyme disease as soon as possible – it is best to begin treatment early, before more severe symptoms develop.
Later Symptoms (days to months after tick bite)
Neurological changes: If left untreated, Lyme disease can affect the nervous system and lead to symptoms such as facial paralysis, severe headaches, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, and problems with memory or concentration. Unexplained or sudden neurological changes are never something to ignore, and you should seek medical treatment promptly if you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms.
Joint and nerve pain: Lyme disease can cause inflammation in the joints, leading to symptoms similar to arthritis, such as swelling, stiffness, and pain, especially in the knees. It can also cause shooting nerve pain and intermittent pain in the muscles, tendons, and even bones.
Additional symptoms include heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat, episodes of dizziness or shortness of breath, and additional EM rashes which can show up on different areas of the body.

Treatment: Early detection and treatment are crucial for effectively managing Lyme disease, and most cases can be resolved when they are caught in the early stages. Antibiotics are the primary treatment for Lyme disease, with doxycycline, amoxicillin, and cefuroxime axetil being most commonly prescribed.
For early-stage Lyme disease, a course of oral antibiotics lasting two to three weeks is typically sufficient. In cases where the disease has progressed to the nervous system or joints, intravenous antibiotics may be necessary for a more extended period.
Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS):
For most people, symptoms of Lyme disease resolve over time. In some cases, however, Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome can cause prolonged symptoms that can affect quality of life even after antibiotics have been used to treat the infection.
Prevention: Preventing Lyme disease primarily involves minimizing exposure to ticks and taking precautionary measures when spending time outdoors – particularly in wooded or grassy areas where ticks are prevalent. Here are some preventive measures you can take to keep yourself and your loved ones tick-free as you enjoy the outdoors:
• Use insect repellant: The CDC recommends treating clothes and outdoor gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin, a tick-repellant
commonly used to treat boots and camping gear. You can also buy clothing and materials that are pre-treated with permethrin. You should also apply insect repellant directly to the skin. Look for products that specifically mention tick protection, and make use of the EPA’s registered list of insect repellants to find the best products for you and your family.
• Wear protective clothing: Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes when walking in wooded or grassy areas. Tuck pants into socks or boots to prevent ticks from reaching the skin.
• Perform tick checks: After spending time outdoors, thoroughly check yourself, your children, and pets for ticks. Pay close attention to areas such as the scalp, behind the ears, and around the waistband. Additionally, be sure that no stowaway ticks hitched a ride on any of your camping or hiking gear, as that could lead to bites later on.
• Create a tick-safe environment: Keep grass trimmed short, remove leaf litter, and create barriers like gravel or wood chips between wooded areas and your yard to discourage tick activity.
• Use tick repellent for pets: Use veterinarianrecommended tick preventatives for pets and check them regularly for ticks, especially after outdoor activities.
People with Lyme disease often experience fatigue and body pain. Do you have any advice for staying active despite this?
“To help with chronic fatigue related to Lyme disease, and to stay active while recovering from Lyme disease, it is important to perform activities within one’s own limit. Pushing too hard may make fatigue worse. Resting and pacing your activity can help you to stay active. This means physical resting as well as resting the mind, which includes having a good night’s sleep. You can pace yourself by taking regular breaks during the activity and spreading out activities over a longer amount of time rather than doing things in quick succession.
Certain anti-inflammatory foods and dietary supplements also help fatigue, including omega-3 fatty acid, vitamin D, antioxidant-rich foods such as green tea or dark chocolate, avocados, olives, nuts, and seeds. Lean protein such as fish, chicken, and plant-based protein also helps.”

The male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is striking and characterized by its black, white, and rose-red plumage. The striking contrast of these colors makes it easily recognizable. Females and immature birds have a more subdued appearance, with streaked brown and white feathers. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks have distinctive voices and are often compared to American Robins but with a sweeter tone.
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks can typically be found in forest edges and woodlands. These birds often visit bird feeders, especially during migration seasons, where they eat sunflower seeds as well as safflower seeds and raw peanuts. Growing Pains
Supporting Teen Mental Health
From experiencing big emotions and hormonal changes to navigating major life events, teenaged years are tumultuous by nature. Unfortunately, this can make it difficult for parents to differentiate normal adolescent behaviors from signs of mental illness. Here, we explore five signs that a teenager in your life could be struggling with their mental health and share advice from local experts on how to support them.
By Rinn Smith
36 healthscopemag.com
Depression
Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders among teenagers. Symptoms include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, and thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Depression can show up as a variety of symptoms and behaviors, but the common signs include withdrawing from social activities or hobbies, declining performance in school, struggling with self-care or personal hygiene, and notable changes in behavior or personality.
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and specific phobias, affect millions of teenagers worldwide. Symptoms can manifest as excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. Teenagers with anxiety disorders may avoid certain situations or experiences that trigger their anxiety, leading to impaired social and academic functioning. Anxiety can manifest as hypervigilance and perfectionism, but overwhelming feelings of worry can also cause teenagers to shut down and be unable to function.
Substance Abuse
Many teenagers experiment with drugs and alcohol as part of their developmental exploration. However,
substance abuse can escalate into a serious mental health problem characterized by dependence, addiction, and associated psychological issues. Signs of substance abuse in teenagers may include changes in behavior, declining academic performance, withdrawal from family and friends, secrecy, and physical symptoms such as bloodshot eyes or tremors.
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and bingeeating disorder, disproportionately affect adolescents – particularly girls. These conditions involve changes in eating behaviors and disturbances in body image perception. Warning signs include dramatic weight loss or gain, obsession with food, preoccupation with body shape or weight, secretive eating habits, and frequent trips to the bathroom after meals.
Self-Harm
Self-harm, or non-suicidal self-injury, is a maladaptive coping mechanism often associated with underlying mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. Teenagers may engage in self-harming behaviors such as cutting, burning, scratching, or hitting themselves to alleviate emotional pain or gain a sense of control. Signs of self-harm include unexplained injuries, frequent wearing of long sleeves or pants to conceal wounds, and isolation from peers.

Recognizing Mental Health Problems in Teenagers
Many people with disorders like depression and anxiety try their best to keep these feelings to themselves for fear of being different or making their loved ones worry. Luckily, there are several steps you can take as a parent to support your teenager through these difficult times. Some effective strategies include:
Increased Awareness: Educating parents, authority figures, and teenagers themselves about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems can facilitate early recognition and intervention. Paying attention to any changes in behavior, mood, academic performance, or social interactions can provide valuable insights into a teenager’s mental health status.
Open Communication: Creating a supportive environment where teenagers feel comfortable discussing their struggles can encourage them to seek help earlier. If you notice a change in your teenager’s behavior, it’s important to ask about it without judgement. For example, “I’ve noticed you’re sleeping more during the day, are you feeling okay?” is kinder than “It’s noon and you’re still asleep, what’s going on?”
Seeking Professional Help: Encouraging teenagers to seek support from mental health professionals, such as therapists, counselors, or psychiatrists, can ensure proper assessment and appropriate treatment. However, it’s important to address the topic of professional help in a sensitive, empathetic way – not during an argument or in a heated moment.
Intervention
It is important for both teenagers and their parents to know that there are many treatments available for common mental health concerns. Once an issue has been identified, prompt intervention is essential to prevent worsening symptoms and improve outcomes. Treatment options may include:
Psychotherapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and other forms of psychotherapy can help teenagers develop coping skills, challenge negative thought patterns, and address underlying emotional issues.
Medication: In cases of severe or persistent mental health disorders, medication may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms and stabilize mood. However, medication should always be used in conjunction with therapy and under the close supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.
Supporting Your Teenager
Support systems are crucial for teenagers, especially if they are experiencing mental illness. In some cases, involving family members in the treatment process can strengthen support networks, improve communication, and address family dynamics that may contribute to the teenager’s mental health problems. This can include attending joint therapy sessions with your teenager or asking their therapist for advice on how you can offer support outside of therapy sessions.

Ask an Expert
How can parents offer support for a teenager with anxiety?
“Have the conversation in an area that makes the teen feel safe and supported. Allow them to express themselves openly and reflect what you are hearing them share, both so that you can validate their feelings and have clarity. Make supportive statements that attempt to normalize their feelings. Encourage them to allow themselves to feel the anxiety while they are in this safe space. Create a plan with the teen’s input and agreement to break down the situations causing them anxiety into smaller, more manageable amounts. This will build confidence in their ability to complete the task or face the situation.”
Kristin Smith, LPC-MHSP, MHA Director of Physician & Provider Relations, Parkridge Valley
How can parents support a teenager with an eating disorder?
“Trying to support a child who is struggling with an eating disorder can be overwhelming and exhausting, so getting professional help from an eating disorder specialist is crucial. Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, and you cannot support your child and their recovery alone. Even if your child is not completely ready, you can play a vital role in their recovery journey by staying compassionate. Compassion for yourself and for your child is key. One of the most important things you can do is create an environment that emphasizes healthy eating behaviors, such as anti-diet and ‘all foods fit.’ Model a healthy mindset about body image by abstaining from making comments about your body and the bodies of others. Supporting a child with an eating disorder takes energy and patience; recovery is a long process, and there will be setbacks. Remember that eating disorders are not a choice.”
Addie Bramlett, RDN, LDN, CEDS-C Director of Eating Disorder Programs, Focus Treatment Centers
How can parents offer support to a teenager who may be struggling with depression?
“Teenagers who struggle with depression will need support and connection, first and foremost. A natural inclination of a teenager will be to internalize and probably not be expressive about their pain. They will likely hibernate, isolate, not want to share very much with you, and may start acting differently around family and friends. This doesn’t mean they want you to go away – on the contrary, teenagers need their parents more than ever.
As a parent, make sure you are available to listen and connect without advice-giving. Most people want others to hear and understand them over ‘fixing them.’ If you are noticing that your teenager continues to struggle even through your attempts at communicating in their language, I would recommend therapy. Often, teens can feel nervous and afraid of therapy, but once they start attending, it can be a really helpful and expansive thing for the entire family.”

Darlene Smith & Scott Greene
Darlene Smith and Scott Greene are on a mission to ensure our community receives the resources, education and support for cancer patients and their families.
“The impact made by the American Cancer Society for patients and their families in our community many times goes unnoticed,” states Darlene. The beauty with ACS is that they provide help with ALL CANCERS and the money raised in Chattanooga benefits the community through grants, corporate partnerships, and the research that will save lives. Scott Greene adds, “For patients that need treatment not available locally, ACS provides free housing through our HOPE lodge. In 2023, the Nashville HOPE lodge provided 735 days of support and free housing for 34 Chattanooga cancer patients, saving these families thousands of dollars.” Money raised here locally does not even touch the cost of the resources provided in Chattanooga so this year’s mission is to raise the funds that will allow more direct resources, but they need the help and donations of our community.
In 2023, Unmasking the Future – Gala of Hope did hit goal, raising just under $320,000, while the Men Wear Pink raised $140,000. The support of the community is going to be key in 2024 in order to double what was raised last year to accomplish what is needed. In hopes of exceeding this goal, ACS will be hosting a Gala of Hope concert benefit recognizing childhood cancer research on October 25, by the Yacht Rock Revue.

“The extravascular ICD allows us to implant the defibrillator lead under the sternum and prevents systemic infections. We were proud to be the first to implant this device, which allows us to extend a multitude of options to patients in this region and country.”
Harish Manyam, MD Chief of Cardiology, Erlanger
Extravascular ICD
This innovative device has broken new ground in cardiac care.
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a small battery-powered device that corrects arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats. It is used to treat heart conditions that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest such as ventricular tachycardia, where the heart beats dangerously fast, and ventricular fibrillation, a severely abnormal heart rhythm.
ICDs are traditionally placed inside the chest, with wires called leads attached directly to the heart. However, breakthroughs in technology have made it possible to install an extravascular ICD (EV-ICD) without the need for invasive internal work. The lead is instead placed outside of the heart, where it provides the same cardiac therapies as a traditional ICD.
How Does It Work?
ICDs work by delivering an electric shock to the heart when an irregular heartbeat occurs to restore a regular heart rhythm. During EV-ICD implantation, the device is installed beneath the sternum using a minimally invasive approach. Once successfully installed, it will be ready to provide defibrillation, antitachycardia pacing, and pause-prevention therapies.
The Benefits of EV-ICD
• Life-saving technology. Sudden cardiac arrest is a serious condition that is fatal without immediate treatment. ICDs are a life-saving cardiac intervention that significantly decreases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest occurring by maintaining a healthy heart rhythm in at-risk individuals.
• Minimized risk. EV-ICDs minimize the risk of infection and other complications associated with invasive procedures by eliminating the need for leads to be threaded into the heart.
• Enhanced patient comfort. In addition to longlasting and effective cardiac therapy, recipients of EV-ICDs can enjoy a more comfortable experience and reduced recovery time thanks to the innovative extravascular approach.

Venclose Radiofrequency Ablation System
This advanced catheter system can effectively treat varicose veins.
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that are visible to the eye and commonly occur in the legs. While they are most often a benign cosmetic concern, in some cases, varicose veins can cause pain and discomfort. Whether for cosmetic reasons or for symptom relief, innovative technology can provide a solution.
The Venclose Radiofrequency Ablation System is one of the most advanced systems currently available to treat varicose veins. With state-of-the-art features and proven results, this system has successfully treated over 200,000 patients.
How Does It Work?
Treatment with Venclose involves a simple, outpatient procedure. Your doctor will first insert a small catheter into the affected vein. Venclose will then deliver heat, causing the vein to shrink and close. The catheter is then removed, and the procedure is complete. Following treat-
ment, the body will naturally reroute its blood flow to healthy veins.
The Benefits of Venclose
• Minimally invasive. The lowprofile design of Venclose minimizes invasiveness and maximizes efficiency.
• One-of-a-kind technology. Venclose is the only system of its kind that offers a 360-degree approach to varicose vein treatment. Its small resistive heating coil provides circumferential heating, rather than the quadrant heating of other systems.
• Flexible design. Venclose also sets itself apart with the ability to accommodate both long and short vein segments, thanks to a flexible catheter shaft that can navigate and provide treatment to a wide range of anatomies. Plus, clear markings and a curved tip help ease positioning during the treatment process.
An Expert Weighs In
“The Venclose catheter from BD represents game-changing technology in the treatment of venous insufficiency for patients. In using radiofrequency ablation under ultrasound guidance, Venclose catheters close the diseased veins and thus redirect the venous blood to a lower pressure, higher flow system. This serves to decompress the leg and offending varicose veins and return blood flow to the heart in a more expeditious fashion. Venclose does this with the smallest, most flexible, and fastest working catheter in the industry.”

“Cervical disc replacement is the latest upgrade in spinal technology. It’s all about keeping things moving naturally and minimizing recovery post-surgery. When it comes to cervical disc issues, this procedure offers a quicker bounce-back and gets patients back to their active lifestyle. By avoiding the limitations and potential complications associated with fusion, cervical disc replacement emerges as a preferred choice for those seeking lasting relief from cervical disc issues.”
Kyle Kesler, MD Fellowship Trained Back, Neck, & Spine Surgeon, Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics
Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement
The development of artificial cervical discs has revolutionized the treatment of neck pain.
Cervical discs are important structures located between the bones of the neck. When healthy, discs act as flexible cushions that absorb compression and allow the neck to bend and rotate. However, use and damage can cause a disc to wear and lose its effectiveness. When this occurs, the nerves in the neck can become compressed and lead to neck or arm pain and numbness or weakness in the arm. Advanced technology has successfully replicated the complex function of cervical discs and provided a new surgical solution: artificial cervical disc replacement. These artificial discs consist of metal plates with a mobile core that moves like a natural disc and mimics its cushioning effect.
How Does It Work?
During surgery, patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make a small incision in the neck, remove the worn cervical disc, and replace it with an artificial one. This procedure typically takes one to three hours and can be performed in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
The Benefits of Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement
• Preserved range of motion. Previously, the only surgical option available to treat a degenerative disc was spinal fusion, where the bones are fused together, stopping all motion. The advanced design of artificial discs allows patients to maintain normal neck movement.
• Reduced stress. Spinal fusion can cause accelerated wear of the discs above and below the fusion, called adjacent segment disease. Artificial cervical disc replacement lowers the risk of this occurring as it places less stress on adjacent discs.
• Lasting relief. Artificial cervical discs are durable and long-lasting. By relieving pressure on the compressed nerves, this procedure can provide relief for years to come.

“To provide evidence-based diet modifications and treatment plans for patients suffering from dysphagia, a swallow study is conducted to monitor and evaluate a patient’s ability to swallow a variety of food and drink textures. Siskin Hospital uses TIMS MVP 5.0 to improve clarity of real-time readings, record at 30 fps (which is the gold standard for the industry), and easily note and measure findings. The upgraded system has also improved our time efficiency, allowing for faster treatment implementation.”
Michelle Smith, MS, CCC-SLP, CBIS Speech-Language Pathologist, Siskin Hospital for Rehabilitation
TIMS MVP 5.0
This upgraded system has made analyzing swallow studies easier than ever for speech-language pathologists.
Dysphagia refers to swallowing that is persistently painful or difficult. This condition can be caused by weakened or damaged muscles and nerves, or the narrowing of the throat and esophagus. Though the act of swallowing takes less than a second, technology can record and slow down this process for doctors to observe. TIMS MVP 5.0 is the most up-to-date imaging method available for use in modified barium swallow studies and is enhancing outcomes for patients with dysphagia.
How Does It Work?
When undergoing a modified barium swallow study, a patient will consume several different foods and liquids mixed with barium, a substance visible on x-ray. The TIMS system provides images of these foods as they travel down the throat, allowing a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to track their progression and look for any problem areas. The SLP will then use their findings to develop a treatment plan.
The Benefits of the TIMS System
• Updated technology. The fifth and most recent generation of its kind, TIMS MVP 5.0 offers cutting-edge video recording and diagnostic imaging tools. This industry-leading system optimizes productivity by delivering the most efficient imaging available.
• Gold standard-imaging. The TIMS system delivers images at 30 frames per second (fps), which is considered the industry gold standard.
• Informed decision-making. The detailed imaging provided by the TIMS system is an important tool when assessing the cause of and best treatment for dysphagia. Equipped with this information, SLPs can make informed decisions regarding treatment and therapy methods.

“The robotic platform has revolutionized hernia surgery. It allows me to offer my patients durable repairs that are comparable to traditional open surgery, while decreasing postoperative pain and wound complication rates – leading to faster, better recoveries.”
Richard M. Tanner, MD General Surgeon, University Surgical Associates
Robotic Surgery for Hernia Repair
Robotic approaches to surgery are gaining popularity, including in hernia treatment.
A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening or weakness in the muscle or tissue that contains it. Symptoms depend on the type of hernia and range from pressure and a dull ache to no symptoms at all. The telltale sign of a hernia is a visible bulge, typically in the abdomen or groin area.
Surgery is the only way to repair a hernia. During this procedure, a surgeon puts the affected organ back in place and closes the muscle layer, restoring a strong barrier. While open surgery is the traditional route, a robotic approach is becoming an increasingly popular alternative.
How Does It Work?
While the patient is under general anesthesia, a surgeon will operate the robotic system from a nearby console. A thin scope with a camera will be inserted via a small incision and provide a detailed view of the organs to the operating room. After maneuvering the robot to perform the hernia repair, the surgeon will close the incisions and conclude the procedure.
The Benefits of Robotic Hernia Repair
• Precision. Robotic systems allow surgeons to perform complex maneuvers with ease. They offer a wider range of motion and improved dexterity compared to the human hand, enhancing surgical accuracy.
• Improved imaging. The advanced imaging technology used during robotic hernia repair provides a three-dimensional, high-definition view of the surgical area. This clear visualization keeps the surgeon highly informed as they operate.
• Faster recovery. Robotic hernia repair is less invasive than open surgery, requiring only three or four small incisions. Fewer incisions means less post-operative pain, fewer wound complications, and a shorter recovery time.

Chrissy Percy On How Her Family Overcame Childhood Cancer
I always say that of all the things I’ll ever do in my lifetime, being a mother to my kids will always be my biggest accomplishment. As a little girl, I dreamed about my fairytale wedding and named my babydolls, thinking those would be my kids’ names someday. While the fairytale I had once envisioned wouldn’t turn out so dreamy, I had two beautiful babies despite the heartache. Brooklyn was born first. She was tiny but fierce. About 15 months later, I had the smiliest baby boy named Cruz.
I found myself a single mom with two babies who were perfect in every way – healthy and so full of life.
Fast forward to August 1, 2021. We were headed to a family vacation in Florida when Brooklyn started to complain that her stomach hurt. I wasn’t too concerned because she was never sick, and I thought it was maybe car sickness. As the day went on, she got worse. She wouldn’t eat and felt like she was going to pass out. I wondered if she got a stomach bug from camp.
By the time we checked into our rental, Brooklyn was having trouble standing. I was grateful for my sister, Sarah, who is a nurse, for monitoring Brooklyn and trying to give her medicine. After Brooklyn tried to lay in bed she told me, “Mom, something is really bad and wrong with me, and you are going to have to take me to the hospital.”
She was only 6 years old. I knew something was wrong and drove an hour with my mom to take Brooklyn to the nearest hospital. We were told the pediatric ER had just closed and we may be sitting there for two hours. Brooklyn was throwing up and I was devastated. But as we turned away, a nurse called Brooklyn’s name. They started an IV immediately and took her in for a CT scan.
Afterward, the doctor came in and told us without warning that Brooklyn had cancer. I couldn’t wrap my mind around the words he was saying. He said that Brooklyn was presenting with typhlitis, and it was critical. The next morning, she was airlifted to Shands Children’s Hospital in Gainesville, FL. My now brother-in-law and sister drove me almost four hours to get me to the hospital.

There, Brooklyn was officially diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This started our cancer journey. We never questioned God; we just went with it.
After about a week in the hospital, we moved into the Ronald McDonald Home of Gainesville. There have been so many full circle moments in our journey, and this was one. My sorority’s philanthropy was the RMDH, and I have raised money for years for this nonprofit. We were now the ones that needed a room.
I became Brooklyn’s nurse, giving her exact doses of medications and helping her bathe. She began getting chemo at least three times a week in the clinic. The doctors would always say when they saw Brooklyn and then saw her chart it was like two different kids. She blew their minds away.
Things were going well until 28 days later. We had just spent a great day going to the zoo, but the next thing, I looked over and Brooklyn’s eyes were rolling in the back of her head. I immediately took her to the ER. They ran samples of her blood and did an ultrasound but didn’t find anything and wanted to send her home. I wasn’t comfortable leaving and wanted answers.
We finally got into a room around 2 a.m., where a nurse thankfully believed me when I said Brooklyn’s heart was beating fast and something was wrong. She couldn’t get a pulse and I heard all the beeping and alarms. I honestly thought I was losing Brooklyn. The nurse left and came back with a whole team. They asked if I wanted to stay in the room and I just couldn’t. I found the nearest empty room and dropped to the floor, crying out to God to save her. I saw them roll Brooklyn by, and I thought she was gone. I couldn’t breathe, and my heart was shattering.
A few minutes later, they grabbed me. Brooklyn had been rushed to PICU because she had gone into septic shock. She had a bowel perforation and required emergency surgery. They didn’t expect her to live, and if she did, she
would be in the PICU for months. But Brooklyn was a fighter. She came out of surgery and remained intubated.
In the PICU, Brooklyn had around-the-clock care. This is where I developed PTSD. Every beep and alarm would scare me, making me think something bad was happening. Sometimes I wouldn’t sleep for days. But again, Brooklyn shocked everyone and was able to go to the hospital floor only two days later. They thought she would still be there for a few months, but Brooklyn was determined to get home. After all, we were missing Cruz and our family so much. We finally got to make the trek back home two weeks later. We were so grateful to be back with the community who rallied behind us.

Cancer didn’t stop once we got back home. Brooklyn began her roadmap of treatment for the next two and a half years: she had a port placed in her chest, used an ileostomy bag, lost her hair (and rocked that bald head proudly), and missed first grade. Brooklyn was all about her care. She cleaned her stoma and placed her bag and was aware of all her chemo meds. Brooklyn finished treatment and rang the bell, cancer free, on December 28, 2023.
Brooklyn is the strongest, bravest kid I know. She has taught me so much about life and what truly is important. Cruz really thought Brooklyn was going to pass away. One day, she said in the most honest, kindest voice, “Bubby, if I was going to die, I would have already died. Jesus healed me and I am here for a purpose.” Talk about perspective and priorities!
No one ever wants to hear the word cancer, and no one should ever walk this journey alone. I got instantly connected to Lana’s Love Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Jennifer Greer is a
patient advocate for Lana’s Love who took our family on and poured into us. She would come sit with Brooklyn on hard days or just to enjoy a craft. If I had a need she would cover it. She even orchestrated my son getting a mentor. She literally walks every step with us. She sees us in our weakest, hardest times and rejoices in the happiest of moments. Everyone needs a Jennifer in their life.
Jennifer also hosts a mom’s support group at her house. This group has been such an encouragement. We laugh, we cry, and we share our stories. We listen, hug, and offer sincere love for each momma. We all share a common bond now. We are warrior mommas!
The Austin Hatcher Foundation (AHF) has also come alongside us on this journey. I am so grateful for this organization who offers everything to us at no cost and for life. The counseling for all of us has been so beneficial. They love my kids and myself so well. The kids are usually there once a week and always ask when they will get to go again.
HER STORY
Lastly, I could not have walked this journey without my faith. I am reminded of a verse from Isaiah 66:13, “As a mother comforts her child, so I’ll comfort you.” If it weren’t for people praying for us around the world, I don’t know how I would have made it. I am so thankful to my friends who set up a GoFundMe, all those who donated, our community who poured into us, our church, and my family who never left us.
Back in the hospital during our first stay, the father of a very sick girl said something so profound in the snack area. He said, “Everything you have done your whole life has prepared you for this journey.” I walked away thinking of everything I had done in my life. It was true, I could think of very specific events in my life that prepared me for this journey.
Brooklyn is now 9, playing softball, running, playing, baking, singing, and going to church. She is so full of life! Cruz is the best little brother. I am now on my own healing journey, working with a trauma counselor along with the counselor from AHF.
While cancer doesn’t define Brooklyn, or even our family, it is a journey we have walked. She beat it and she taught me to overcome it!

Improving Your Workdays
How to Advocate for Yourself Professionally
Whether well-established in your profession or starting anew, learning how to advocate for yourself is an invaluable tool in bringing you closer to your career goals. Career advocacy takes many forms, such as seeking growth opportunities, asking for a raise, requesting additional resources, and adjusting worklife balance. Here, we look at approaches to these workplace conversations with holistic career coach, Lydia Fogo Johnson, MS, whose expertise is in helping individuals overcome burnout and design fulfilling, balanced careers.
CAREER & FINANCE
Lydia Fogo Johnson, MS Holistic Career Coach & Founder, ThriveCulture Coaching
Q. What exactly does it mean to advocate for yourself?
A. Advocating for yourself at work means actively nurturing your well-being, success, and professional fulfillment by clearly communicating and pursuing your needs, preferences, and goals. The precursor to confidently advocating for your needs is spending time self-reflecting to know exactly where your needs are and aren’t being met and what you need instead.
Q. I’d like to be considered for a promotion! How do I start that conversation?
A. The first challenge is remembering the details of everything you’ve accomplished. Frequently update a detailed record of your key projects, accomplishments, and any good feedback you’ve received. This record is also helpful when prepping for interviews and a personal booster when you suffer from imposter syndrome, reminding you of your worth and potential. Remember, your boss looks good when you look good, so don’t hesitate to share your successes!
Q. How do I draw attention to my accomplishments without coming across as arrogant?
A. Avoiding sounding arrogant is easy if you always give credit where it’s due. If you worked on a team project, make sure to call out every single contributor. This shows your gratitude for their efforts and fosters a culture of appreciation and collaboration. Give out kudos to others early and often.
Q. How do I set boundaries at work while still being respectful of my team?
A. Boundaries are commitments you make with yourself, outlining specific actions you will (or won’t) take in response to a situation. They are all about you and your behavior, not about attempting to control others’ behaviors. A simple formula for a boundary goes like this: If [situation happens], I will/won’t [action]. This format is respectful of coworkers because your focus is on changing your behaviors instead of theirs. Brené Brown’s advice, “Clear is kind,” is also applicable here – by communicating clear boundaries, you’re setting everyone up for success and reducing uncertainty and angst for all parties involved.
Q. Sometimes my coworkers make comments that are hurtful or offensive to me. Is it worth addressing, or should I just let it slide?
A. Ultimately, the choice is up to you, your situation, and your bandwidth at any given moment. Carrying the burden of educating and providing feedback to others can become exhausting – permit yourself to let it slide if you don’t feel comfortable, safe, or aren’t up for the task. If you feel physically and emotionally safe in this environment and have the emotional capacity to address the comment, nonviolent communication principles can be a helpful format for these conversations. Comments like this are often blunders from a well-intended coworker, but sometimes, they are microaggressions or outright harassment. If you suspect this is the case or these comments become routine, document the details and contact your manager and/or HR for support. When faced with work-related challenges, remember that you don’t have to navigate these struggles alone. Consider reaching out to others to enlist their support in improving your workdays.

The Benefits of Investing in Self-Expression
By Kristen Dee
Recent research is finding a clear connection between self-expression and strong mental health. A poll conducted in June 2023 by the American Psychiatric Association found that 7 in 10 individuals engaging in creative activities such as crafting, writing, and walking in nature reported very good or excellent mental health. A 2016 study found that just 45 minutes of a creative activity can reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, regardless of gender or skillset, and a 2020 study of more than 10,000 Facebook users found that those who expressed themselves authentically on social media reported higher life satisfaction. Whether you pick up a new art practice, wear clothes that show your tastes and interests, or track your thoughts and feelings in a journal, self-expression can make a positive impact on your mental health. Read on to learn a few types of self-expression to try, and some tips to help you feel confident in expressing yourself.
MENTAL HEALTH
66 healthscopemag.com
Types of Self-Expression to Try
• Art forms like painting, sculpture, crafting, or drawing
• Creating social media content in which you share your authentic self
• Creative writing or daily journaling
• Wearing clothes and jewelry that feel “you”
• Cooking a fun, creative meal
• Playing a sport
• Trying something new
While there are clear advantages, self-expression can also feel very vulnerable, and it’s easy to shut down when trying something new. If you’re able to get out of your comfort zone and practice self-expression, there are many benefits including increased self-esteem, better communication skills, and more authentic relationships. These tips can help you get started.
Tips for Tackling Self-Expression
Find a Buddy: Doing something new for the first time can be challenging and daunting. Finding someone to partner with or participating in a beginners group can help you feel less intimidated by a new task, gain confidence in your abilities, and find validation from like-minded peers. And you may gain a new friend as a result!
Take Time for Yourself: Spending time alone can be very beneficial for your mental health and a great way to get to know your true self. Take time to yourself to reflect and learn about who you are. Using introspection can help you better understand your feelings, values, thought patterns, and more, helping you feel self-assured and committed to self-expression. Journaling, especially with guided prompts like “I laugh and smile when…,” are a great way to self-reflect.
Practice Makes Perfect: Chances are you won’t do something perfectly the first time – and that’s okay! Don’t give up if it’s challenging at the beginning. Expressing yourself will help you gain more confidence and boost your self-esteem, and it will get easier the more you do it.

Shadrina Booker
When she’s not dedicating her time to fostering community connections, Shadrina Booker can be found collaborating on creative content with her husband, cheering on her son at a soccer game, or readying for a run. Here, Booker shares how she became an avid runner and what continues to inspire this rewarding ritual. Read on to learn how she is investing in health and wellness through running and more, and the ways that family and fitness go hand-in-hand.
What is your approach to wellness? How has that changed over time?
Growing up, I was far from being an athlete; the thought of working out or engaging in physically demanding activities didn’t appeal to me. This perspective shifted dramatically during my pregnancy. I found myself staying active throughout, which not only led to a wonderful pregnancy and delivery experience but also marked the beginning of my journey towards embracing wellness. The turning point came as our son got older and began participating in sports. Recognizing the opportunity to be a role model for him, I was motivated to embody the values of dedication and perseverance. This led me to embark on my running journey, aiming to demonstrate the importance of working hard towards achieving one’s goals. My approach to wellness is now rooted in the belief that staying active is not just about physical health but also about setting a positive example for my family, especially my son.
What are your favorite ways to practice self-care?
Strength training and running stand at the forefront of
my self-care practices. These activities not only help me maintain physical fitness but also provide mental clarity and resilience, serving as a powerful reminder of my strength and endurance. Equally important to me is the care and styling of my hair. It’s a significant aspect of my identity, and dedicating time to nurture and style it is both a therapeutic and empowering practice. It’s a form of self-expression and self-love that I deeply cherish. Indulging in massages is another favorite self-care method of mine. Massages offer a profound sense of relaxation and recovery, allowing me to unwind and recharge. They serve as a reminder of the importance of taking a step back from the daily hustle to prioritize my physical and mental health.
When it comes to health and wellness, is there anyone you admire or look up to?
Undoubtedly my dad. This year, as he turns 70, his unwavering commitment to his fitness journey, even in the face of significant challenges, continues to inspire me deeply. Despite battling cancer, he never let his circumstances
deter him from staying active. If running wasn’t feasible, he adapted by engaging in other forms of exercise, such as cycling or walking, demonstrating his resilience and dedication to maintaining his health. His approach to fitness, emphasizing adaptability and consistency, has profoundly influenced my own perspective on health and wellness. It’s a powerful reminder that obstacles and age are not barriers to leading an active lifestyle.
What does your daily routine look like?
I generally start my day early, often waking up before the sunrise. Three days a week, I make it a point to hit the pavement and run anywhere from four to six miles, while on weekends, I extend those runs for a bit more challenge. On the days I’m not running, I dedicate time to strength training. Evenings tend to revolve around my family, particularly my son’s soccer activities. Whether it’s practices or games, I’m often found cheering him on from the sidelines. By around 9:30 p.m., I’m winding down for the day … time to relax and recharge for another fulfilling day ahead.
MEET OUR MODEL 68 healthscopemag.com
How do you encourage health and wellness within your family?
Firstly, I prioritize meal prepping and emphasize the importance of making nutritious food choices. Beyond that, I’ve also encouraged my husband and son to embrace an active lifestyle by participating in races together. While they may prefer shorter distances, it’s heartwarming to see them share my passion for running. By making healthy living a shared experience, we not only strengthen our bodies but also our bond as a family.

TRhonda Gilliland
he burning sensation in my chest started when I was with my daddy, who was dying from cancer. The pain felt like a fire poker, and it took my breath away. I was dizzy and had to lie down. An ambulance took me to the ER where tests showed signs of a heart attack. Two hours after I left his side, my daddy passed away.
During the night, the doctors decided I needed an echocardiogram and a heart cath, which is when a catheter is inserted into an artery of the heart. On June 1, 2019, I died during the heart cath. The lead wire dissected my left main coronary artery and my aorta to the inside. This was the point when I reunited with my dad. We were in Heaven’s waiting room, the most amazing place. Then, I saw myself being shocked back to life. It was not my time to go.
Six weeks later, I woke up in a Nashville hospital. My life had relied on an ECMO machine that ran my body functions. Most people are only on an ECMO for a week to 10 days; I was on it for six weeks with the left side of my heart in a state of necrosis and me being in a vegetative state.
Eventually, I was alert enough for my family to explain I’d had a heart attack and there had been MAJOR complications,
and now I needed a heart transplant. I was 49 years old, and now I couldn’t feed myself, brush my hair, or go use the bathroom unassisted. After nearly three months with physical and occupational therapists, I learned to breathe, swallow, whisper, use my arms, and walk againnot an easy task. Being weakened by the machine that saved my life almost took it away. Shortly thereafter, I was added to the heart transplant list.
A few days later, a heart was matched to me. The doctors retrieved the new heart and brought it back to the hospital in a small cooler. In the meantime, my body was cooled down to the temperature of the heart. Once sewn in, my new heart started beating on its own!
Post-surgery rehab seemed endless. At one point, I couldn’t use my arms because the doctors feared it would reopen the incision in my chest. I had to complete so many checklists to get to go home. I feared I’d never get to leave the hospital. There is ALWAYS the concern my body would reject the heart, and as a result, I will take rejection medication for the rest of my life.
After 110 days in critical and intensive care, I left the hospital on Friday, September 13, 2019. Praise the Lord!

Which Season Are You?
By Rachel Studebaker
Seasonal color analysis groups everyone into one of four color palettes, inspired by the seasons. This concept uses color theory to determine which clothing colors are the most flattering for different features and can be a helpful guide for those wanting to refine their wardrobe. Here, we take a look at the components of seasonal color analysis and offer some tips and tricks for finding your season.
Figuring out which season you are is as simple as determining where you fall in the following three categories. Once you have your results, read on to find the season you line up with and learn more about its color palette.
Hue | Cool vs. Warm
Hue refers to your undertone, which can be cool-toned or warm-toned. If your hair has golden tones, that signals warmth. Meanwhile, ashy hair leans cool. Another tip is to consider the jewelry you gravitate towards. Silver jewelry complements cool undertones while gold complements warm.
Value | Light vs. Dark
Value is determined by your overall coloring, with hair color being the best indicator.
Simply consider whether your hair color is lighter or darker.
Chroma | Bright vs. Muted
Chroma involves how saturated a color is. To figure out whether bright colors or muted suit you best, look at the contrast between your features. Bright chromas will have a sharp contrast between their features, while muted will have a soft blend.
While these categories are a good rule of thumb to figuring out your season, there are always exceptions. Experiment with different colors to discover what makes your features shine and consider seasonal color analysis a starting point for finding the color palette that makes you most confident.
STYLE
78 healthscopemag.com
Spring Warm | Light | Bright
The spring palette is comprised of a wide range of fresh, vibrant colors that mirror this season’s blooming flowers. These highly saturated hues pair perfectly with the glow of springs. They include bright yellows, vivid greens and blues, and coral pinks, which are best paired with light neutrals such as cream and tan.
Summer Cool | Light | Muted
The summer palette is reminiscent of the ocean and its many shades of blue. Because strong shades can overwhelm the softness of summers, this palette features smokey and subtle colors that highlight their features. Cool colors take center stage, including dusty pinks, purples, and blues, complemented by neutrals such as gray and navy.
Autumn Warm | Dark | Muted
The autumn palette consists of earthy shades found in nature and its falling leaves. These natural hues are well suited to the soft features of autumns and help bring out the warm highlights in their hair and eyes. Complementary colors include olive greens, golden yellows, and rich oranges and reds, along with neutrals like beige and brown.
Winter Cool | Dark | Bright
The winter palette brings to mind frosty weather and holiday décor with its cool and vibrant colors. Contrast is the defining feature of winters, and a color palette of bright and bold jewel tones provides a striking complement. These include emerald green, sapphire blue, and deep purples and reds, paired with black and white.

Nail Care 101
By Kristen Dee
Having clean, well-kept nails and toenails is an easy way to boost confidence and feel more put together. Nail care includes keeping cuticles moisturized and neat, avoiding habits like picking and biting, and incorporating treatments to strengthen your nails. Read on to learn more about how to care for your nails and toenails.
Resist the temptation to bite your nails.
Biting your nails damages the nail and tissue and can even lead to infection. Dermatologists suggest keeping your nails trimmed short to avoid biting them.
Regularly trim and treat your nails and toenails.
Trim nails and toenails regularly and wear well-fitting shoes. Try to keep nails dry and clean, and use moisturizers such as lotion and cuticle oil regularly. Cuticle oil can be used on both nails and toenails and can increase circulation which promotes nail growth and protects the cuticle. Consistent manicures and pedicures, whether in a salon or at home, can help keep nails and toenails strong and healthy.
Cut your nails and toenails regularly.
Cut your nails and toenails straight across using sharp trimmers or manicure scissors, and file the edges into a rounded shape. This avoids jagged edges that could get caught and cause ingrown toenails.
Maintain a healthy diet.
Choose foods rich in vitamins and protein that promote strong nails. Eggs, meat, fish, nuts, greens, and plant-based proteins pack a nutrient punch that can help keep nails and toenails strong and healthy.
Monitor your nail health.
Consult your doctor or dermatologist if you have significant changes in nail shape or color, swelling or bleeding in the nail areas, or your nails have stopped growing.

A Guide to Caring for Your Cushions
Pillows are among the most well-loved amenities in our homes, but how can we best care for them? Regularly washing sheets and linens is a good place to start, but the pillows themselves might seem tricky to treat. Read on for a quick overview to get you started caring for your pillows and cushions with confidence.
By Tory Irmeger
An Ounce of Prevention Preventing stains, spills, and bacterial buildup will go a long way in extending the longevity of your pillows. Take care not to eat or drink in bed, and change linens frequently, especially when sick. Use protective pillow coverings underneath pillowcases and shams to add an extra layer of protection against debris, allergens, sweat, and makeup.
Sunning Pillows
An easy way to refresh your pillows is to set them in the sun for a few hours a week. Excess moisture is the enemy of upholstery, and a few hours of bright sunlight helps evaporate any lingering dampness. The sun’s ultraviolet rays also reduce dust mites and other irritants that can accumulate in the pillow.
Spot Clean In between deep cleans, regular care and stain treatment will ensure a long lifetime for your pillows. For starters, periodically vacuum your upholstery with a brush attachment. If there are odors, sprinkle baking soda over the pillow and allow to sit overnight before vacuuming. To spot-treat stains, spray a mixture of one part distilled white vinegar and one part cool water on the pillow and air dry.
Will it Wash?
When determining how to wash a pillow, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Pillows filled with polyester fibers can usually withstand regular machine washing and drying. Latex or memory foam pillows, however, won’t stand up well to machine laundering and should be spot-cleaned as necessary. When in doubt, always check the tag for care instructions!
Down & Feather Pillows Touted for their plushiness and comfort, down and feathers are among the more popular options for pillow fillings, but they require a little extra TLC. These pillows can typically be thrown in the washing machine on a cool cycle with a small amount of gentle detergent. When drying, use several cycles with little to no heat, and be sure to break up feather clumps periodically. This may seem like extra work, but it will ensure that your feather pillows are as fluffy as the day you bought them.
Outdoor Pillows
Outdoor upholstery is especially prone to accumulating stains, dust, pollen, and mold over time. When not in use, store away your patio pillows and cushions in a dry place. For an added layer of protection, fabric sprays are readily available to shield against strong sun rays and create a water-repellent surface.

Dauna,
In January of 2020, you became my mentor teacher, and I have been deeply inspired by you ever since. You immediately took me under your wing and helped guide me through the incredibly difficult season of student teaching in a pandemic. As you welcomed me into your classroom, I watched how you devoted everything to the children we taught and created a learning environment that helped nurture the educational and emotional growth of every student.
I’m lucky enough to admire the woman you are outside of the classroom as well. You are a person who is absolutely dedicated to every person in your life and every organization you are involved with. Your children and grandchildren are so blessed to have you in their corner, doing whatever it takes for them to chase their dreams. You carry yourself with a balance of dignity and humility that is difficult to achieve, but amazing to behold. You are the person who always picks up the phone, keeps everyone fed, and saves anyone a seat. You are constant, reliable, and loving in all of the little moments. I can only pray that one day I’ll inspire the people around me as you have inspired me.
Love, Ellen

You come to mind when I read this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth’s beauty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.”
From day one, I observed the way you carry yourself with dignity and grace. I felt the way you care about people and believe in the common good. I marvel at all you have accomplished and influenced. You have a mind for the law, the heart of a musician, and the hands of an advocate.
I am eternally grateful for every contact, opportunity, and invitation you have sent my way. It is such a privilege to have someone like you in my life to look up to, learn from, and have in my corner.
All the good you have sent my way? I am dedicated to making you proud and amplifying it tenfold.

Mara-Lynne,
I’d like to take a moment to give flowers to a friend and mentor who has been an incredible source of inspiration and strength in my life. Mara-Lynne, as one of my very first supervisors, you have played a pivotal role in shaping me into the woman I am today.
From the beginning, you saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet recognized in myself. You pushed me to explore new horizons and encouraged me never to settle for less than what you believed I could achieve. It was your unwavering support and tough love that taught me the value of perseverance and resilience.
Your own journey, marked by a commitment to excellence and an ability to overcome challenges with grace, has been nothing short of inspiring. You embody the essence of leadership and mentorship, always serving others with a level of excellence that motivates those around you to strive for their best.
Your mentorship has been a gift, one that has profoundly impacted my personal and professional life. Mara-Lynne, thank you for your guidance, your faith in me, and for being a shining example of strength and dedication. You’ve taught me that the road to success is paved with challenges, but with determination and support, any obstacle can be overcome.

Wedding Budget
Can you hear the wedding bells? With so many dreams and emotions surrounding the wedding planning process, the wedding budget can be a sensitive subject to approach with a parent, child, or fiancée. Here, we spoke with First Things First President and CEO Lauren Hall to learn more about how to start this important conversation.
94 healthscopemag.com
PARENTING & RELATIONSHIPS
What’s the best way to start a conversation about a wedding budget...
... With your child?
Always start a budget conversation with transparency and honesty. If you’re willing to give a certain amount to the wedding, be upfront about how much you will spend and make all non-negotiables clear from the very beginning. Stay as positive as possible, and remember this event is about your child and their fiancée, so their decisions and desires should come first as long as they’re within budget.
... With your parent?
With a parent, initiating a conversation about a wedding budget requires respect and understanding. Whether the parent is contributing to the wedding or not, talking through a budget with them and asking for their input should be done with careful consideration and realistic expectations. Remember to express gratitude for their support while gently discussing the financial constraints and goals for the wedding.
... With your fiancée?
When discussing a wedding budget with your fiancée, approach the conversation with openness and empathy. Begin by expressing your shared goals and priorities for your big day. Be willing to listen to each other’s concerns and desires while being flexible in finding creative solutions that align with your financial resources. Remember to handle each other with care, as the details of one day aren’t worth a lifetime of poor memories and arguments around this exciting time.
Quick Tips:
Pick Your Priorities – It is crucial to be on the same page from the start and prioritize what truly matters to the engaged couple.
Listen With Love – Practice open communication and active listening, providing support and empathy as you plan the celebration.
Care to Compromise – Encourage compromise by exploring options that meet all parties' needs and values.
Befriend Boundaries – Parents should set clear boundaries regarding their financial contributions while allowing space for the child's input and wishes.

Hydration Explained
By Rachel Studebaker
It’s no secret that water is crucial to our health. Water makes up two thirds of the human body, which depends on it to survive and maintain every bodily function. While it’s common knowledge that water and hydration go hand in hand, knowing how much to drink is equally important. Read on to learn the details of daily water intake and helpful tips for staying hydrated and healthy.
Hydration Explained
Every day, the body loses an average of 8-12 cups of water as it sweats, exhales, and eliminates waste. Hydration refers to the process of replacing this water by consuming fluids. Good hydration can help prevent health conditions such as urinary tract infections, headaches, and constipation.
Dangers of Dehydration
When you don’t drink enough water, your body won’t be able to function at its best. Dehydration can cause dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, and lightheadedness. It can also affect mood and productivity, causing irritability and trouble concentrating. Thirst and urine are the best indicators of hydration levels. Urine should be colorless or pale yellow – anything darker means you need more fluids.
How Much Water Should You Be Drinking?
A good rule of thumb is to drink at least eight cups of water per day, but some people may need different amounts to stay hydrated. For example, if you are active or outside in hot weather, you will need to drink more water than average.
DIET & NUTRITION
98 healthscopemag.com
You should drink water:
• First thing in the morning
• Regularly throughout the day
• Before, during, and after exercise
While water is always best for staying hydrated, many foods we eat are made up of mostly water. This includes most fruits and vegetables. Foods and beverages such as broth-based soups, teas, and juices can also boost your fluid intake.
Helpful Hydration Tips
• Keep a water bottle with you as you go about your day to make hydrating convenient.
• Store a bottle or pitcher of water in the refrigerator. Fluids are more easily absorbed when cold.
• If you’re having trouble remembering to drink water, try setting reminders on your phone to stay on track.
• Choose water over beverages with a high sugar or caffeine content, which can hinder hydration.
• Infuse water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs for added flavor. Try combining cucumber and mint or lemon and strawberry.

Mocktail Mania
Inrecent years, the rise of the sober-curious movement has led to an increased interest in non-alcoholic drink options. Whether you’re looking for digestive support, boosted hydration, or just a delicious alternative to a traditional cocktail, mocktails offer refreshing flavors and a host of added health benefits. Read on for drink recipes that are sure to shake things up!
“This mocktail is named for Mississippi-born U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Tretheway. The drink is based on a Jamaican-Caribbean holiday drink called ‘sorrel’ which is a spiced hibiscus and ginger punch. It is bright, a little sweet, and great for summer without being too ‘lemonadey.’”

• 1 oz. Tazo’s Passion Hibiscus tea
• ½ oz. pineapple juice
• ½ oz. lime juice

• 1 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice + extra, for garnish
• ½ oz. freshly squeezed orange juice
• ½ oz. agave syrup
• 2 oz. coconut water
• Soda water, to taste
• Pinch of salt or salt rim garnish (optional)
If desired, rim your glass with lime juice and dip in sea salt. Add the lime juice, orange juice, agave, and coconut water to a shaker or jar. Add ice and shake until the outside of the shaker or jar is frosty. It shouldn’t take more than 10 seconds. Strain the mocktail into your prepared glass. Top with soda water for a little fizz. If you didn’t rim the glass with salt, you can sprinkle a pinch on top if you would like.
RaspberryLemonade Slushie
SERVES 4
Treat yourself to this frozen drink that’s a blend of fresh raspberries and fresh lemon juice.
• 12 oz. raspberries
• 1 cup sugar substitute
• ½ cup fresh lemon juice
• 5 cups ice cubes
“Coconut water is used in place of tequila in this Margarita Mocktail. This adds some hydrating electrolytes and balances the tartness of the lime. To scale up this mocktail, just replace the ounces with cups for a larger, big-batch mocktail that’s perfect for entertaining!”
– Kate Robertson Parrish
1. In a food processor or blender, process the raspberries, sugar substitute, and lemon juice until the raspberries are puréed.
2. Add the ice cubes. Process until the mixture is mostly smooth and has a slushie-like consistency. It’s okay if there are a few ice chunks. Don’t overmix.
3. Divide the slushie into cups. Serve immediately.

Split Squat Single Arm Row
Holding one heavy dumbbell in your right hand, take a big step behind you with your right foot into a lunge position. Bend your knees until they are almost 90 degree angles. (To lessen the intensity, feel free to straighten the legs a little more). Hinging from the hips, take a slight bow, letting your right arm hang straight down. (You may choose to support yourself with your left hand on your left thigh for extra support). Bracing your core by drawing the navel towards the spine, pull the dumbbell up by powering the elbow behind you towards the ceiling. Repeat for 10-12 reps. Quickly transition to the other side with no rest. For an added balance challenge, lift your back foot off the ground for a single leg bent over row.
Russian Twist to Overhead Press
Sit on the floor with one heavy dumbbell that you can lift over your head. Holding the weight by the ends in front of your chest, plant the heels down and lean back about 45 degrees with a proud chest without rounding your back. Twist your torso to the right, return to center, then lift the weight straight to the sky. Alternate twists, always stopping in the center for the overhead press. Depending on your weight choice, repeat from 12-20 reps total, 6-10 per side.
healthscopemag.com 105
Kneeling Hammer Curl
Grab two heavy dumbbells and get into a kneeling position on the floor. Tuck your hips forward until you feel your glutes. Draw the navel towards the spine for extra core engagement, and relax your shoulders back and down. Begin to curl the weights straight up towards the shoulders, keeping the elbows pinned next to your torso. Take your time and do not swing the weights. Repeat for 10-12 reps.
Bridge 2
Arm Tricep Extension
Lay down with two light to medium dumbbells with your knees bent and feet close to your glutes. Lift your hips all the way up until you feel your glutes. Stretch your arms straight to the sky with palms facing in. With control, bend at the elbows, taking the dumbbells towards the sides of your head. Control the weight as you extend straight back up to the sky. Repeat without letting your hips drop for 10-12 reps. Slowly roll a few inches back and forth, building up towards a larger movement.
Chest Press With Knees 90
With dumbbells in hands, lay down on the ground and bring your feet off the ground with knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Place your arms straight up to the sky with palms facing forward. Slowly descend the elbows out to the side, stopping right before the arms touch the ground. Make sure the dumbbells stay in line with the chest, not the shoulders. Repeat the chest press for 10-12 reps.
