“Architecture is the thoughtful making of space.” – LOUIS KHAN

Each year, local builders, architects, interior designers, and home craftsmen create dozens of astounding residential homes throughout the Chattanooga area. These homes and the rooms that fill them are not only elegant and tasteful – they’re a stunning display of exquisite artistry and craftsmanship. From contemporary to traditional, modern farmhouse to French provincial, the design styles exhibited throughout these homes are truly unique and a sight to behold. In the last six months, we have photographed and gathered professional photography from more than 40 different homes. In the process, we have had the privilege to work with many of our area’s top builders, residential architects, interior designers, and home suppliers to create this beautiful publication. On top of the striking homes shown, CityScope® magazine’s Homes & Design also provides 2020’s latest interior design trends, including advice on how to easily refresh and redecorate a room. Through a series of other helpful articles, we share sage advice from local craftsmen on how to create continuity in your home, use textiles to set the tone for any room, and design your dream kitchen. We also offer tips from local experts on how to transform an outdoor space into your own personal oasis. For those planning to build or remodel, local professionals offer advice on how to best prepare for a remodel and what’s trending in new construction. Whether you are building your forever home, remodeling, or just choosing new colors for your favorite room, CityScope® magazine’s Homes & Design provides fresh and creative ideas from the work and advice of exceptionally talented local artisans and craftsmen. We hope that you will enjoy the creativity and the outstanding work of our area’s builders, architects, interior designers, and home suppliers, and when choosing professionals for your home, we hope that you will choose from our local craftsmen. Our experience with the Robinson Team was flawless! The transaction from listing to closing was handled with professionalism and hard work, and Jay’s team was always available. If it had not been for Jay, during several tense interactions with the buyer, I doubt that our property would have closed. Special thanks to Jay and ALL of his highly trained team members. - Tony and Lea Ann W.

Jay is the best realtor in Chattanooga. This is the second house that he has sold for me and he sold it the same day it was listed. He does his homework and is great at marketing and selling properties. – Michael S.

IN THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES, PUT YOURSELF IN OUR EXPERIENCED HANDS. If you live in Chattanooga or its environs, we aren’t sure why you would use a different realtor than Jay Robinson. Jay is that person whose combination of expertise, problem solving, and real estate skills will either find you the perfect home, or connect you with the perfect buyer. Using someone less skilled is, in our opinion, a mistake that could cost you money, headaches, and potentially exposure to risk or mistakes. He easily navigated what would and wouldn’t work, rejected offers he thought weren’t to our benefit, and found us a perfect buyer for our home. We can’t say enough good things about him, his attention to detail, and how he handled our sale - including a very thorough walk-through with suggestions on very simple improvements that would make buyers much happier to call our house a home. Should we ever buy a second home in Tennessee, because we now miss it, we wouldn’t think twice about who to call. Jay is the best in the business. – Brent and Mariah Hoard

I can’t say enough good things about the Robinson Team of professionals. They took special care of our home, went out of their way to market to the right buyers, and treated showings as if it were their own home. They sought to understand our position on selling and were patient with us and the process. We are very happy and would only use them in the future. – Buffy L.

Jay and his team were great to work with! They made the home selling process easy and took all of the stress out of it. We felt like we were a priority every step of the way. We would highly recommend the Robinson Team to anyone! – Rebekah T.

– Ornate Lakeside Luxury – BY CHRISTINA CANNON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

When Don Oscai, builder with OC Construction, was brought on to aid in the addition of this lakeside home, he immediately got to work putting together his dream team. “The main thing the homeowner wanted was to create a ‘wow’ factor,” explains Oscai. “With that comes a certain level of detail and precision, so we had a pretty limited subbase. We had to be very intentional about who we invited in, and we were fortunate in that everybody that walked in understood that this was going to be a different type of project.” Builder: Don Oscai, OC Construction Interior design: Designs by Yvette Morgan

LAKESIDE GRANDEUR The home’s grandiose nature is evident in its outdoor living space. The gently curving infinity pool seems to be one with the lake, and an elevated spa gives unmatched sightlines of the woods and water. An open-air living area features a towering stacked-stone fireplace and provides plenty of space to gather around a fire and outdoor TV. A covered terrace offers up yet another seating arrangement, and the entire outdoor area is punctuated with pops of bright blue and green, adding a dash of style. To learn more about OC Construction, contact 423.595.4168 or occonstruction@hotmail.com.

Inside the home’s living room, the ornate details of the French country style that the homeowners are so fond of begin to emerge. Another stacked-stone fireplace, similar to the one found on the outdoor terrace, grounds the room. A palette full of neutrals is accentuated with hints of light blue and eloquently complements the dark wooden beams that work to draw the eye upward to the peak of the cathedral ceilings. These beams provide a stark contrast against the white tongue and groove walls and ceiling that almost exclusively make up the interior of the home.

Open to the living room is the home’s kitchen, which follows through on the existing color palette. Here, an original La Cornue range from France served as the starting point for much of the kitchen’s design. The range’s beautiful muted blue is repeated in not one, but two kitchen islands. “The beauty of this kitchen is the way we designed the islands,” explains Becky Worley of Classic Cabinetry. “We reversed the seating from the way you would normally see it and made it to where you can sit 30 |

one way to get a stunning view of the lake, but then you can also turn around and be part of whatever is happening at the prep island.” Brushed brass cremone bolts can be found on select cabinets and play off of the accents on the range. These colors are carried even further with two eloquent pendant lights and the hardware that dots the remainder of the cabinetry. White beaded inset flat panel cabinetry keeps the room bright, while an ornate range hood and several glass-front cathedral mullion cabinets build on the existing French country theme.

The same signature blue color used on the kitchen cabinetry spills over into these neighboring rooms. A chic mud room leading to the garage is a catchall and provides customizations for all of the homeowners’ needs. Here, a small built-in office nook gives way to traditional coat and shoe storage before transitioning to a lakeside living necessity – life jacket storage. The home’s laundry room, one door over, repeats many of the colors, textures, and materials of the mud room. Printed porcelain tile runs throughout, and an apron-front sink adds a dose of character. A custom dog kennel is covered with a stylish metal grate, and food and water bowls are hidden just out of sight. “When it came to the laundry room, we really needed it to do a lot of different things. Because they are right on the lake, the homeowners wanted a commercial ice maker, but they still had plenty of laundry to do,” says Worley. “We have open space for laundry baskets and hampers behind cabinet doors that keep the laundry organized and out of the way, but this room also stores gift wrap materials, extra serving dishes, you name it. This space is really very functional, and there’s a lot going on in this little room.” Cabinetry: Classic Cabinetry Cabinetry design: Becky Worley, Classic Cabinetry Countertops and tile: Stone Source, Inc.

“The unique thing about this coffered ceiling is how many elements we have going on,” says Oscai. “When we decided to replace nearly all of the sheetrock with tongue and groove paneling, we tore down the whole ceiling and built it back. The end result was what you see here, which has seven different trim components reflected in each box.”

Wire-brushed French oak flooring carries visitors down a short hallway to the master suite. From the bedroom, expansive windows and doors give an unencumbered view of the lake and lead on to a screened-in porch. The same soft colors and tongue and groove wall paneling provide cohesion, and a cast stone fireplace dishes out a hint of warmth. In the bathroom, white cabinetry features turn post accents, providing a nod to the design of the kitchen cabinetry, and crystal pulls mimic the doorknobs seen throughout the home. A spa-like shower, complete with lavish tile work, features an array of rain heads and body sprays, and a nearby clawfoot tub is prime for relaxation. Just off the master suite, a spacious screened-in porch provides a relaxing respite. Cool flagstone ties into the collection of blue accents and textiles seen throughout the home, both inside and out. Dark tongue and groove ceiling planks correspond with the beams inside and round out the luxurious area. “With this home, it’s the little details that really make it unique,” says Oscai. “Everywhere you turn, there is some feature, element, or accessory that makes other homeowners stop and think, ‘Why didn’t I do that?’ Everything is expertly accented, and it makes the whole home and everyone’s work look outstanding.” Outdoor furniture: Fowler Brothers Co.

Convenient Cottage Living BY CHRISTINA CANNON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

Urban sophistication meets quaint cottage living in this conveniently located home. Dexter White of Dexter W. White Construction expertly combined light colors and materials with deep rich accents to create a bright and airy home complete with a pop of personality. “When we first acquired this property, we really had our work cut out for us,” says White. “We had a beautiful lot in a great location, but the house sitting on it was condemned. Our first order of business was to put together a vision for how to turn this space into a beautiful home that someone would want to live in.” This inviting home captivates visitors with its handsome exterior. The clean white brick is punctuated with modern black windows and wooden planks above a double garage. Just below the roof’s two prominent peaks rests a simple geometric pattern that ties into the slate color of the shingles and adds visual interest. Builder: Dexter White, Dexter W. White Construction Interior designer: Lynn Lepcio, Design 360

| 41

CASUAL OUTDOOR OASIS Walking around the side of the home takes visitors to a welcoming living space along the back exterior. A patio with a grand stone fireplace pulls double-duty, functioning as added separation from other homes in the area as well as a relaxing spot to spend the cooler months. A staircase leads from the patio to another great outdoor spot – a casual screened-in porch that is prime for conversation. Here, durable composite decking serves as the foundation for a wicker sectional, and just steps away, a hanging day bed provides even more seating options. To see more from Dexter W. Entering the home through a gorgeous arched doorway, visitors are led almost immediately into the home’s kitchen, where a sleek and streamlined atmosphere comes out to play. Warm hardwood floors run throughout the home, while rich spray-finished bottom cabinetry builds on the color palette. The brown lower cabinets tie in with the range hood, and the entire room is brightened up with white shakerstyle upper cabinetry. These double-stacked cabinets draw the eye upward and accentuate the room’s 10-foot ceilings. An elongated pendant light hangs above the island, and its shiny chrome finish effortlessly plays off of the room’s appliances, hardware, and the stands of three barrel-back barstools. Light quartz countertops and glossy backsplash tiles incorporate the colors and textures of the mid-century modern style that the homeowners adore. Adjacent to the kitchen, the dining room features a stately wooden table with seating for eight. The parsons chairs, with their light fabric, work to maintain the neutral color palette, while a two-tier pendant light hangs overhead and offers similar lighting but in a different configuration from the nearby kitchen fixture. Mountaintop Transitional BY CHRISTINA CANNON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CREATIVE REVOLVER

Located atop Lookout Mountain in the McLemore community, this inviting home eloquently blends into the pristine landscape by drawing on natural materials that can be found throughout the area. “This is a great example of a classic architectural design,” explains Duane Horton, owner of GenTech Construction, LLC. “This home is very well tied to the roots and scenery of the area through its utilization of natural materials, and even though the home has rustic elements, it provides a bit of a modern take on the style.” Builder: Duane Horton, GenTech Construction, LLC Architect and interior design: AR Homes by Arthur Rutenberg

INVITING THE INDOORS OUT A cornerstone of any naturalistic style, stone and wood play a big part in this home’s design. The back porch is bookended by two stone walls that bring the materials used on the home’s front exterior full circle. To one end is a state-of-the-art grilling station and outdoor dining space for six, while the opposite side of the porch features a flat-screen TV along with a viewing area. Flagstone pavers go hand in hand with the stone being used, and cedar columns provide an added dose of warmth. A matching cedar beam is used for a mantel, but perhaps the most beloved feature of this space is three glass doors that can be opened in one fell swoop to expose the home’s great room. Back inside the home, the floor plan feels open while still allowing every room to have a specific intent. Gray board-and-batten wainscoting wraps three walls of the dining room, which is meant to accommodate gatherings without becoming a closed-off, formal space. “Less people are wanting a formal dining room these days, but we are in a great Southern locale, and we wanted people to have the capacity to gather around the table over a holiday meal or Sunday supper, says Horton. Large beams in an X pattern provide a different style and texture from the other beams used throughout the home and work to add visual interest overhead. Moving further into the home, guests arrive at an elegant wet bar, which opens to the living room. Interior doors, trim, and windows: East Chattanooga Lumber & Supply Co.

In the living room, the light and neutral color palette used throughout the home really shines. “We came in and decided to use a light color on the walls to make it feel like the outdoors,” says Horton. “This property kind of feels like an island in the sky, and the whites and light grays we chose almost mimic sunlight and give this airy feeling that helps balance darker elements like the trim and fireplace.” From this space, visitors can easily access the den, office, master suite, kitchen, dining room, and additional areas, truly making it the heart of the home. Just steps away, the kitchen builds on the home’s rustic nature with an island featuring leathered granite countertops. CONTEMPORARY MOUNTAIN MARVEL BY CHRISTINA CANNON PHOTOS COURTESY OF SURFACE ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN/ BY MORGAN NOWLAND

“Some properties have such an incredible view that the primary architectural achievement is to not mess it up,” explains Michael Bridges of Surface Architecture & Design. In this hilltop abode, Bridges worked the lay of the land to ensure that no matter where you are inside the house, the view is second to none. Natural textures, colors, and materials come into play to create a rustic but contemporary atmosphere that pays homage to nature itself. SUPERIOR SCENIC STYLE To showcase the bluff views, Bridges designed the home in a linear floor plan, which allowed nearly every room in the home to get a glimpse of the amazing vista. Single-direction shed roofs that slope toward the sky maximize window space, while painted cement board-and-batten siding provides an element of durability and draws the eye further upward on this stately home. Three tall stone walls dissect the spaces and offer up visual interest. Meanwhile, reclaimed wood siding can be found in various places on the home’s exterior and provides a unique juxtaposition with the other materials used. “One of the main goals in this project was to divide the home up into sections, each with a slightly different view and feel,” says Bridges. “These divisions accommodated the separate privacy demands of the home and helped to visually scale down the spaces for intimacy.” To see more from Surface Architecture & Design, visit surfacearch.com.

Once inside, a formal foyer gives way to an open concept floor plan that effortlessly blends the home’s main living spaces. Warm wide-plank hickory flooring features a custom stain and complements the cool stone walls that run throughout the home. A gas fireplace is capped by a custom mantel, while a large gray sectional offers up the perfect place to take in the view. Black pendant barn lights hang throughout the space and provide a faint industrial flair. These lights are accentuated by a pair of kinetic two-tier chandeliers with filament-style bulbs, one of which hangs above an eight-seat wooden dining room table. From the dining area, the kitchen is just steps away. Shadow Storm quartzite cloaks the kitchen island, which features bottom cabinets painted in a dark matte gray that are outfitted with polished chrome hardware.

In the kitchen, white perimeter cabinets bring a lightness to one of the home’s signature stone walls. A stainless-steel range hood commands this side of the room, while Gray Lagoon quartz countertops feature a concrete finish and work to reinforce a simple industrial theme. Three floating wooden shelves sit to the right of the range and provide a rustic flair that complements the other materials and provides a bit of warmth. A sleek Kuzco pendant light packs a punch and works to illuminate the kitchen without taking up much space. A sliding wood door to the right of the foyer takes visitors out of the main living space and through one of the home’s 24inch thick stone walls and into the master suite. Away from the public space, this room continues the home’s neutral color palette and marries an array of whites, grays, and browns. Custom cream-colored bedding is bookended by a headboard with Duralee fabric mimicking wood and leather bench. A silhouette of birds mid-flight accentuates the bedroom’s back wall and carries the eye toward the top of the vaulted ceiling. Stained wooden beams run the length of the room and provide cohesion between the home’s public and private spaces.

Back outside the home, the structure’s linear nature can be appreciated. The three stone walls, which feature differing angles, serve as a juxtaposition to other homes in the area that often include horizontal stone bases. The stone, reclaimed wood, and board-and-batten siding offers a tasteful balance of materials before treating guests to the lot’s breathtaking panorama. “There is something very attractive to me about the unassuming street-side façade of the home living in coordination with the large, airy spaces behind,” explains Bridges. “The form of the home is less a ‘design statement’ and more of a reaction to the needs of the structure to appreciate the view.”

CRAFTSMAN MEETS MODERN BY CHRISTINA CANNON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

When Jay Caughman of Caughman + Caughman Architects took on the remodel and addition of this classic craftsman home, he set out to strike a balance between giving the homeowners the open space they needed while still delicately defining each space. “The architectural style was kind of given to us on this project. We started out with a style that was already established and just added onto it,” explains Caughman. “There are definitely some craftsman elements that shine from the exterior to the interior on this home, but our main goal was to take a big, open space and transform it into organized areas that fit the lifestyle of the family living here.”

Architect: Jay Caughman, Caughman + Caughman Architects Builder: Steve Ward, Sun Construction Interior designer: Michelle Vaughan Interiors

FINDING THE FLOW Once inside the home, its expansive nature can truly be appreciated. Rooms run together with unparalleled fluidity while simultaneously managing to reserve their distinct character. “The largest design feat we probably dealt with was just tackling flow,” Caughman says. “We had a formal living space in the very front and a living area in the back and a kitchen right in the middle. We had to figure out how to get people from one space to the other without feeling like we were marching them straight through the kitchen.” To see more from Caughman + Caughman Architects, visit caughmanarchitects.com.

In order to accomplish his goal, Caughman needed something visually heavy to separate and anchor the kitchen. A lengthy and thick center island with quartz waterfall countertops did the trick and affords enough space for this family of six. Globe pendant lights provide a midcentury modern flair that is accentuated by a set of clear-seat barstools with warm gold frames. Adding to the warmth in this room are flat walnut bottom cabinets that are skillfully paired with upper white shaker cabinetry for a stark contrast. Tucked right next to the kitchen is a stylish wet bar that allows guests to grab a cocktail without entering the kitchen.

“With an older house like this one that has been remodeled several times, it’s always a challenge to come in after other people have done their work. This former porch-turned-seating sensation uses the original dropped ceilings to create a quaint and cozy atmosphere. Just out of frame, a large cased opening provides access to the home’s casual dining area while still providing this room with some definition and purpose. “We’re constantly walking the line between having spaces be open and too open, so it’s really about finding that balance,” says Caughman. 90 |

By traveling down the large circulation path that runs alongside the kitchen, visitors can access the home’s great room. Here, a flat-screen TV rests on the back wall and is bookended with built-ins placed above the same walnut cabinetry that can be found in the kitchen. “Another balancing act was keeping the people somewhat close to the TV while still maintaining this pathway that really runs from the front door to the back porch,” says Caughman. A set of sliding French doors sits at the end of the pathway and draws guests outside. Here, a small space delivers on an array of functions. A grilling area gives way to a wooden dining table, while a wood-burning stone fireplace serves as a focal point. “The back porch is a great example of trying to stay true to the home’s style,” explains Ward. “We put a lot of effort into making sure the siding along the back of the house matched the original and embraced the arts-andcrafts style.”

Back inside the home, a vestibule adjacent to the kitchen signifies to visitors that they are entering private quarters. The main floor master suite is an oasis all its own with additional space for watching TV or reading a book. Continuing further into the space leads to a tranquil bathroom. Porcelain tiles carry from the area above the vanity down to the floor and work their way up to cloak the shower walls. A basket weave pattern is cen-

tered in front of a freestanding tub and provides some interest while keeping the room relaxing and bright. “This room, just like everything else in this home, has the exact space it needs,” explains Caughman. “I’m not a fan of making spaces big just for the sake of being big. If you give every area in your home a function and the proper amount of space, then everything just sort of falls together.”

2020

Whether it’s adding greenery or carving out a workspace, there’s sure to be a design trend you’ll want to try this year. Here, local experts share their top design trends for 2020.

Interior design has taken a turn in 2020 from cool grays to a warmer palette that combines taupes and warm wood grains with gray. Fabric texture has moved to the forefront of fabric selection due to customers’ time spent at home. Comfort is king. Therefore, yummy, soft, velvety finishes are preferred. Earth tones are being contrasted with white and gold metals that give warmth and a sense of security while staying bright by contrast. Chris J. Stephens, ASID, Dimension Designs, Inc., Total Concepts Furniture

— TRENDS —

Recently, we have all faced working from home. Refreshing our workspace is a current focus. Fitting a workspace into our existing rooms can be a challenge. Whether you have a dining room that is seldom used that can become a more dedicated office, or if you are carving out a corner of your bedroom, it can present a design challenge to create both form and function. Being both a realtor and designer, I think with both sides of my brain. Adjusting your spaces to work for you and yet not permanently altering the space for those who come after you is key. I think this will become more and more what clients are asking for in both the homes they purchase and those they want to remain in. Linda Gaddis, 35 South Real Estate & Design

I think one of the biggest design trends that we’re seeing this year is people moving toward a bit more of a minimalist lifestyle. People are using spaces in myriad ways. Kitchens and dining rooms have become offices out of necessity, so these spaces are being reinvented. People are spending more time at home right now, and they’re wanting a clean, calm, and airy space in which to spend their time. A lot of influence for this type of design is coming from designers on the West Coast, who use more earth tones such as deep chocolate brown and natural wood with a variation of richer finishes and textures to create a timeless space. People are wanting to create something cozy and lived in that is still beautiful and functional. Laura Hertle, Laura Hertle Designs

When it comes to what’s hot in 2020, European elements are having a moment. Spaces are reflecting more of a cozy, vintage atmosphere with high contrast and are taking on less of a set style. To get this look, add in elements that are unique. High contrast designs, especially black and white classic interiors, are timeless and dramatic. Black furniture is also great to add to any existing collection. Canopy beds offer dramatic, romantic lines along with a luxury feel and can incorporate a modern or traditional design. Earth tones and blues, along with white and gray walls, have been dominating the past few years. Clients are craving warm, cozy tones and colors. Browns, corals, and pinks are returning, and blues will continue to emerge in 2020. The Pantone color of the year is even Classic Blue 19-4052. Find items and colors that speak to you, and enjoy the spaces around you! Kimberly Varner, ASID, NCIDQ, Kimberly Varner Interior Design

I am seeing a trend toward combining styles and layering textures such as velvets and natural-looking linen. Also, accessories are a little more plentiful and diverse, and greenery varieties can warm big corners. Jewel tones are back, and sofas, chairs, and sectionals are sometimes a little curvier. Beautiful colors such as teal, cobalt blue, reds, and Kelly green are everywhere, and black accents never go out of style as far as I’m concerned. Neutral sofa and chair fabrics are still great if you like to change accessory colors, and since the deep jewel tones are in, consider using one as a background for your neutral sofa – even if it’s only on one wall. When it comes to kitchens, white is still a favorite, but the pretty woods are back. A different color on the island or on a cabinet that’s in the center of a wall is a great update. Dolores Wolfe, IDS, Wolfe Studio Interiors

We have all been cooped up in our homes thinking of what we would like to change, but you may not know what style or direction you would like to go to. Here are some things to keep in mind. Grays will be around for a while, but many are moving toward off-white and neutrals and adding in a pop of color. For example – green, chocolate brown, and wine earth tones are making a comeback. Another trend that is gaining popularity is minimalist design combined with bringing nature inside. Find spots where you can add greenery to the room without adding more clutter. We are also seeing different types of wood tones and metals mixing in a room. The last trend that I feel is important Kristy Steele, is showing your personality. What are you interested in? Where have you traveled? Bring in some old with the new. Mango’s A room needs to represent you and make you happy. This is always the best trend. Décor & Co.

Fun feature walls and ceilings are in! By creating a focal wall or ceiling, you can turn a simple space into a fun, eclectic, or elegant room without breaking the bank! Custom hand-painted murals are currently highly desirable; however, they can be quite costly. Designing a single wall will keep the overall look of the space beautiful and balanced and will reduce the overall cost by 75%. Stencils, wallpapers, and specialty finishes such as plaster are great points of interest to an area of design that is often otherwise overlooked! Dawn D. Totty, Dawn D. Totty Designs

Traditional furnishings are creeping back onto the scene! As people have stayed at home for weeks, they are trending toward a softening of lines in furniture. With the fact that traditional furniture will always be in style, harsh lines are softening around the edges. That is a sign of things to come. When it comes to colors, consumers have enjoyed all shades of gray, and though it continues to be an important background, accent colors of yellow and blue are definitely being used in interiors. In particular, yellow is being used because of its optimistic appeal. Floor coverings are a big part of design plans. With the continuation of hardwoods and laminates that mimic hardwoods, rugs are a must. Maybe that is why traditional furniture is re-emerging as well. Antique style rugs are flooding the markets and have a traditional “washed” appearance. Therefore, watch for traditional furniture, and possibly a few antiques, to re-emerge in the marketplace. An important trend that we have seen this year is a focus on American-made products. Customers have been specifically seeking out these products, much more so than in the past. We have also seen an increased interest in higher quality products, especially when it comes to sofas, leather, and upholstery. Another huge trend is the new traditional decorating style, which is essentially a more casual version of the traditional style we have seen in the past. New traditional is not opulent but is a very timeless and fresh look that our customers are gravitating toward. When it comes to colors, we are still seeing lots of whites, beiges, and other neutral tones serving as a base for living room and bedroom design. Our customers are building on these neutrals with accents and color. We have seen a pull toward velvet, specifically green and blue velvet, which adds great color and texture to any room. Carter Fowler, Fowler Brothers Co.

Homeowners and clients are seeing the value in well-planned spaces, especially now that our homes are both offices and cluttered classrooms. The multifunctional trend does not mean drab or utilitarian. While using a kitchen island or breakfast room as a coffee-friendly work area, do not leave out your dining room. A well-executed dining room can function as a chic and luxurious library, office, or sitting area, while also allowing families to take advantage of underutilized space. An on-trend way to transform and declutter your multipurpose space is to skirt a table. Able to hide cords, printers, file boxes, etc., a table skirt adds instant design and softness. Look for fabrics and trims that elevate your space. Place large coffee table books, flowers, and even a pair of lamps on your dining table to create a whole new feel. Ryan Kirk Kopet, Miles and Kirk Design

Lasting design incorporates comfort into inviting spaces. One way to “relax” your furnishing is to integrate the trend of abstract motifs into your décor. For their spring market introductions, manufacturers released more globally inspired goods featuring primitive shapes, organic materials, and clean lines. Each manufacturer has its interpretation of these abstract shapes, whether it be in wallpaper, furniture, lamps, rugs, or textiles. The plethora of options range from using abstracts in bold colors to subdued textural applications. Other scene-stealers include hexagonal shapes. Case goods are incorporating this form via innovative ways. Whether using it for a dining table base or fused together for a side table, this shape can bring an unexpected interest to your space. Starting into this new decade, I look forward to seeing a more eclectic mix of design styles and periods in our interiors. I see us breaking away from creating spaces that are extremely style specific and relating to one period of design. For me, I want to curate layers - something old with something new, classical furnishings with modern accents, and traditional patterns finished in contemporary color palettes. Merging styles and creating juxtapositions will present interiors that are more personal and memorable. It can be sometimes challenging to accomplish this design style while maintaining exquisite taste, so I advise working with a professional in order to make sure your interiors become memorable for the right reason. Garrett Henson-Hinck, Henson-Hinck Designs

When it comes to current trends, there is so much you can do with window coverings. We are seeing more of a demand for motorization, and not only are Hunter Douglas shades being motorized, but also custom drapery and Roman shades. These are being placed in every room and not just living rooms and bedrooms. Homeowners are enjoying the ability to control the operation of these window coverings from their mobile devices. There is also an upswing in embellished soft furnishings. Examples are tapes applied to the leading edges of drapery, trim attached to the bottom of Roman shades, and fringe bordering pillows. Textiles that are familyfriendly and stain-resistant are being offered by many more manufacturers. These fabrics are being offered in more vibrant colors. Neutrals are still a mainstay, although they now come in more refined weaves along with pronounced textures. Jill Rodgers, High Country Designs

The trend in 2020 is all about getting back to the basics. Craftsman and shaker simplicity are the hot looks this year. These styles are complemented beautifully with the timelessness of plantation shutters with larger louvers for an open, airy feel. Roller shades with modern enhancements such as smart automation are another great way to go with this design trend. The unique challenges of 2020 have also given rise to tweaking outdoor spaces. Beating the heat, glare, and insects with solar shades on porches has been increasingly popular with everyone wanting to enjoy their outdoor spaces while spending more time at home. Amazing floors will always be the foundation to a great space. In the early 2010s, we were darkening our wood floors and brightening our rugs with neutral patterns. But now, it’s time to embrace the contrast! Light, airy wood tones have stolen the show, and the need for a strong rug to contrast and ground your space is now in order. Don’t be afraid to be bold with your selections either. Pair a rug with deep hues and add a textured linenblend couch, and you’ve got yourself a taste of transitional paradise. Cassie Courtney, featherlane design co. llc

I see a trend rising that I would call modern romance. Beautiful floral fabrics, all sorts of patterned wallpaper, kitchen cabinets, and even paneling painted in rich saturated colors are showing up in my favorite publications. Full draperies, Roman shades, and classic window treatments are popular again. Antiques are making a comeback, and the word ‘vintage’ is everywhere. There is even a resurgence of prairie-style dresses! But this romantic look for homes is new in that it’s restrained and edited, and it relies more on texture, well-chosen anchor pieces, and a few significant collectibles rather than layers and layers of possessions. Nancy Waddell, Buckingham Drive Interior Designs/ Chattanooga Window Treatments

Mixologist – not the bar kind – but the ability to mix styles, colors, finishes, and fabrics is in demand. Chairs with curves and mixed metals, woods, and fabrics are always a big hit when added to a clean-lined, bench-cushioned sofa that is upholstered in soft, earth-toned boucle. Wood finishes, along with soft brushed brass and silver metals, make for great accent tables. A touch of wicker or rattan can be added as a soothing piece. Performance fabrics, such as Cryptons and Sunbrella, continue to be developed for beautiful and easy-to-care-for upholstery! Jimmy Adams, Nell’s Home, Gifts, & Interior Design

French Manor Flair BY CHRISTINA CANNON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

When Julie Bledsoe of Dwell Designed Construction first took on this stunning project, there was no set-in-stone vision to work toward. Instead, the end product ebbed and flowed with each decision made. “Out of all the homes I’ve ever worked on from the very beginning alongside an architect and a client, this one was the most fluid in terms of just taking ideas and words and trying to form them into a home,” explains Bledsoe. Even with relatively few visual examples and no set style, this majestic manor turned out to be one of a kind with an array of eclectic characteristics grounded with a French influence that can be traced back to the homeowner’s time spent in the city of New Orleans. STUNNING AND STATELY STAIRCASE Entering through a set of French doors centered in between signature turrets, guests find themselves standing in a hallmark area of the home. A mirrored inverted staircase commands the foyer and creates interest with an expertly executed curvature. “At the beginning of the project, we knew that we wanted to do two staircases, but how we were going to do them continued to evolve,” says Bledsoe. “Once we finally settled on the design, the staircases really set the pace for the rest of the home.” To see more from Dwell Designed Construction, visit dwelldesignedconstruction.com.

The same white oak floors seen in the foyer carry visitors further into the home’s open floor plan and toward the kitchen. Here, handcrafted waxed wood tiles provide a focal point behind the range and served as a starting point when designing the rest of the kitchen. Light quartz countertops with faint gray veining keep the room airy and bright and easily tie in with the white shaker-style perimeter cabinets. Just steps away is a dining area that can seat six. A beam crafted out of the same white oak found in the floors creates an X overhead and is a nod to the placement of the flooring found in the foyer. “We decided to make a sort of X shape with the way we laid the hardwood in between the staircases. We loved the feel of that, so we decided to carry it throughout the home, and we just started incorporating that shape in some places. - Julie Bledsoe, Dwell Designed Construction

The cohesion is carried through into the living room, where a white oak mantel rests just above a fireplace. A leather sofa provides a place to relax, while two herringbone-patterned armchairs round out the seating arrangement. Pops of yellow and gold contribute to a bright and cheery atmosphere and work well with the existing color palette that is full of rich browns and other neutrals. Two sidelights flank each side of a set of French doors and bring in natural light from the back of the home.

In the bedroom, the warm color palette seen throughout the rest of the home turns a little cooler. Gray textiles and a gray coffered ceiling are livened up with pops of white found in the trim, lamp shades, and bedding. The crown jewel of this room, however, is a large pendant light that hangs overhead. “You can see this light from inside or outside the home, and it’s really beautiful,” explains Bledsoe. “At night is when you really appreciate it. It almost looks like a candle, and it provides a bit of a soft, romantic touch.”

Carrying on into the master bath, an array of luxurious patterns, colors, and shapes emerge. Honed black subway tile in a herringbone pattern creates an accent wall at the back of the shower, while penny tile lines the floor, bench, and inside of the niches. Gray porcelain tile cloaks the floor and runs across the room to a dual vanity surrounded by white custom cabinetry. Another one of the home’s unique features is a freestanding tub, centered in front of French doors that lead to the home’s porch. “This is one of my favorite things about the whole home,” says Bledsoe. “I remember thinking when we first decided to place the tub here that it was so unique, but at the same time sort of ties into some of the French New Orleans influences throughout the rest of the home. The homeowners were afforded a great lot with a certain level of privacy, and it allowed them to do neat things like this.” Black herringbone tile: Stone Source, Inc. | Cabinetry: Dakota Concepts Inc. | Cabinetry design: John Crawley, Dakota Concepts Inc.; Juliet Braly, Juliet Braly Interior Design | Chandelier: Southern Lighting | Tile: Acme Brick, Tile & Stone

NOSTALGIC NEW ORLEANS ITALIANATE BY CHRISTINA CANNON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

When the last of the children flew the coup from this century-old home, it was time to turn the family-friendly abode into a refined escape that would rival even the best of the Big Easy. Jonathan Bailey, builder for HGH Construction, LLC, worked hand in hand with Shelley and Caldwell Huckabay to make sure the project was executed with style while still staying true to the home’s original character. “I think we all came into this project with an intention that we were going to be very respectful of this house,” says Bailey. “Sometimes when people renovate a home, the first thing they do is blow it up and blow it out, and that would have been the wrong approach to this house.” Builder: HGH Construction, LLC Designer: Van Deusen Design Interior design: Sean Thompson Interiors

WHITE BRICK BEAUTY Back outside the home, the Italianate style gives way to French influences with five gas lantern sconces and a New Orleans-inspired secondstory balcony. Here, an iron railing ties in with some of the home’s interior elements and draws the eye upward toward the hip roofs of the white brick home. “The gas lanterns outside are really where it all started,” explains Bailey. “Shelley just fell in love with those pieces, and the entire design style evolved off of that.” To see more from HGH Construction, LLC, visit hghconstruction.com.

A mixture of white and red oak floors, which are characteristic of the home’s age, draw visitors further inside and into the kitchen. The richness of the wood grain floors is complemented by light colors used throughout the rest of the space. Gatsby quartz countertops run throughout the kitchen, and Calacatta Gold marble tiles with faint veining add a touch of character while keeping the space airy and bright. Simple white shaker-style cabinetry rounds out the look and is outfitted with gold hardware, which nicely ties into two pendant lights over the island and the frames of three clear-seat barstools. To the right of the kitchen sits a wet bar punctuated by two unique globe lights carrying a trace of the gold found in the kitchen. “This house, from the outside, is extremely traditional and classic, and it was really important for us to retain that classic feel as we modernized the kitchen,” explains Jackie Howard with Scarlett’s Cabinetry. “To create this timeless essence, we extended the cabinetry to the ceiling and used the same finish on the cabinetry as the millwork in a light historical gray-painted finish. We chose to use elements that are removable such as the barstools, lighting, and hardware and let those be what offered the room a modern touch.” Appliances and plumbing fixtures: Ferguson | Cabinetry: Scarlett’s Cabinetry | Cabinetry design: Jackie Howard, Scarlett’s Cabinetry | Tile: The Tile Store

The home’s dining room sits adjacent to the kitchen and welcomes guests with its warm, neutral color palette. Pops of pale pink and a purplish gray are carried from the accent pillows and fresh flowers that rest on the nightstand all the way to a botanical painting on a nearby wall. Steps away, a sliding door grants access to the master bathroom, which maintains an elevated elegance with its Carrera Gold basket weave flooring. “This room is a great example of what it meant to respect this house,” adds Bailey. “This is not one of those master bathrooms that has 200 square feet and a chaise lounge in it, but that wouldn’t have felt right anyway. We took the space we had and turned it into a little slice of luxury that still fits the character of the home.” Cabinetry: Scarlett’s Cabinetry | Cabinetry design: Jackie Howard, Scarlett’s Cabinetry | Tile: The Tile Store

With a mixture of colors, materials, and textures, this eclectic home combines the old with the new in a truly artful way. “Our main goal with this project was to make everything flow. We always want everything we do to feel like it was the original intent,” explains Bailey. “It’s rarely ever the big details that leave a lasting impression with you in a house. It’s the little things that tweak it for you and make a house really feel like a home.”

A MODERN TAKE ON TIMELESS BY MARY BETH WALLACE PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

In this European-influenced construction, neutral color palettes, antique accents, and a thoughtful layout come together to create a classic home that is sure to stand the test of time. To start, the home’s painted brick façade mixed with natural stone lends a charming appeal. Custommade shutters true to the European styling are installed on sliding hardware, allowing them to function on either side of the second-story windows. Bringing life to the roofline, century-old copper finials are a subtle yet tasteful element that pulls the design of the exterior together. Ashley Stinson, interior designer at Cain Development, LLC, explains, “Our goal with every project is to make it as unique as possible, and one way we do this is by blending old and new. The copper finials actually came from a salvage shop in Virginia, and they really provide the perfect finishing touch.”

Builder: Jordan and Josh Cain, Cain Development, LLC Interior designer: Ashley Stinson, Cain Development, LLC

DAPPER DINING The home’s stately exterior gives way to a more informal atmosphere indoors. The Cain brothers believe that ceilings are for making bold statements, and the ceiling of this formal dining room is no exception. “We knew we wanted something dramatic in the dining room,” explains Josh Cain, builder at Cain Development, LLC. “The end result was these beautiful wood beams we installed across the ceiling. The beams add definition to the open floor plan and really provide warmth to the dining room.” To see more from Cain Development, LLC, visit caindevelopment.org.

Stunning in its simplicity, this kitchen is the ideal blank canvas with its monochromatic look. Jutting through the center of the kitchen is a long and narrow island topped with a white quartz countertop. White shaker-style cabinetry and a subway tile backsplash reinforce the monochromatic theme, while above the sink, a small greenery wreath adds a splash of color. Cool stainless-steel, seen in the range hood, double ovens, and dishwasher, offers up a hint of industrial chic.

Steps away from the kitchen are a cozy dining nook and even cozier seating area in front of a double-sided fireplace, clad with a matte porcelain tile. “The double-sided fireplace is one of my favorite features in the entire house,” Stinson shares. “It establishes such a beautiful space and really grounds the room. I can just imagine sitting there and having a cup of coffee in the morning! It’s details like these that matter the most, that take a standard room and turn it into something timeless and unique.”

The same gray-washed hardwood flooring used throughout the home’s main level continues into the living room. Here, a wooden single-blade fan punctuates the extrahigh ceiling and serves as both a functional fan and a focal point. Another double-sided fireplace – this one wrapped in white shiplap – can be found in the master suite. Along with the bedroom’s soft hues, this feature evokes a sense of tranquility and comfort. The bedroom itself is a masterclass in layering textures – pieces like the Persian rug, tufted headboard, faux fur pillow and throw, and wicker accents work to create a dynamic design. Also of note is the bedroom’s tongue and groove tray ceiling, finished in a custom wash to give it a beautiful aged appearance; like in the dining room, this ceiling plays a major role in the overall aesthetic of the room.

RE MOD E L M AG IC Are you looking to refresh your home? A remodel can not only bring new life to a space, it can also increase your property value. So, when it comes time to tackle a new project, there are some things that experts want you to know.

How I view remodeling is different now than it was just a few short months ago. What we have all recently experienced is going to have a profound shift in how we are going to be living in the future. Just as hurricanes and tornadoes spur requests for storm shelters, this pandemic will bring a host of architectural changes. Will we incorporate sanitation stations into our floor plans? Will we design ways for touchless deliveries to be made? Will there be a shift in the open concept floor plans we currently are drawn to? The home, the late architect Le Corbusier said, is a machine for living. It reflects how we live, and we sculpt our spaces to enhance our lives. And when we have changes in the way we live, the spaces we crave to be in change also. I do not know exactly what the future will bring in how we live, but I look forward to continue creating solutions in our ever-changing lifestyles. Jay Caughman, Caughman + Caughman Architects

— TRENDS —

One area that really needs a heightened level of communication between a builder and the client is the kitchen and the master suite. Both of these areas bring together so many elements, whether it be all the different levels of lighting or technologyenabled appliances. There is so much planning that goes into these rooms, and it really helps when clients are thinking ahead and not making changes or additions after all of the sheetrock has been put up. It’s also useful when there is an architect or interior designer involved. A lot of the times, these individuals do a great job at helping communicate with the client and making sure the builder has all the information they need to construct a stunning, functional home up front. Steve Ward, Sun Construction

My best advice is to take some time to research and review images to create a wish list for your home. I ask all of my residential clients to do this because it quickly allows me to get a sense of their style and goals. Then, we can work together to create a scope of work that fits their existing house and budget. If you choose not to work with an architect, be as specific as possible and use drawings and images to communicate to your contractor. Also, what appears to be a straightforward update can require some unforeseen steps. I recently noticed that my own house, a 120-year-old wood building, needed some paint touchups. No problem, right? Upon closer inspection with my painter, we realized that there were several areas that needed some carpentry repairs. Developing a sequence for a project is an area that architects and contractors can work closely together on to improve the chances that your project comes in on time and on budget.

Most often our clients are looking to replace their existing cabinetry with new custom cabinetry or maybe install new windows and doors. My advice would be to talk to local cabinet shops and window suppliers to see what their lead times are once products are ordered. Lead times can vary from several weeks to several months depending on the product and vendor, so if you are planning for a remodel to be completed for a special family occasion or by a certain date, it’s important to take this into consideration. You can only progress so far without windows and doors and certainly cabinets as well. Don’t wait too late to start your planning!

— TRENDS —

Renovations are a great way to keep things looking fresh around your home and increase property value. With proper planning and a good team in place, the process can be as smooth as possible. That said, the one bit of advice I always give is to “expect the unexpected,” especially on older homes. Every home is built differently, so sometimes the exploration through demolition reveals a more involved or different project than originally intended. As you would imagine, the kitchen and bathrooms require more planning and cost compared with other areas of the home because there is more coordination needed with plumbing, electrical, cabinets, appliances, and fixtures. While these areas can sometimes cause headaches during construction, they also provide the greatest reward in terms of instant impact and increased value of the home. Michael Bridges, Surface Architecture & Design

150 |

When it comes to remodeling, a contractor’s biggest challenge is HGTV. Everyone thinks you can create a new kitchen or bathroom between commercials. Remodeling is typically much trickier than new construction, especially when it comes to bedrooms, kitchens, and family rooms. It takes time, money, and patience. Homeowners first need to find a contractor who will help them establish a realistic budget and schedule. If your contractor can’t openly communicate on these two topics up front, find someone else.

When it comes to remodeling a home, research is so important. Knowing what style you’re drawn to, any must-have customizations, pricing, energy efficiency, and durability will all help any project run much more smoothly. Thinking about these things in advance will save you time, money, and probably a few headaches. It’s also important to examine the pros and cons of materials when you start making selections. What might cost more upfront often times is more durable, energy-efficient, and maintenance-free, likely costing you less in the long run.

A COUNTRYSIDE MANOR BY MARY BETH WALLACE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

Builder: Rob Cuthbertson, Cuthbertson Homes Architect: Jon Greenfield, Greenfield Design

152 |

Elegant yet rustic, this custom home is a stunning showcase of the French provincial style. With an expert execution of the steeply pitched hip roofs, which are a cornerstone of the aesthetic, Rob Cuthbertson with Cuthbertson Homes was able to create a house that was authentic and ethereal. “The French provincial style really started in rural France in the 1600s and 1700s,” explains Cuthbertson. “We started from that original style and have taken some of those concepts and applied them here. The end product is a style that is very central to what the homeowners wanted.” A delicate blend of stone and brick once again embody the style and command the home’s exterior. These materials are punctuated with mirror-image windows, while a stately arched doorway is centered on the front porch between two sets of wicker furniture, making intimate arrangements that are prime for conversation.

| 153

STRIKING A BALANCE Inside the home, the balance and symmetry can be fully appreciated. Stone matching the home’s exterior cloaks the walls of the entryway, while a wood ceiling and warm pendant lantern light set the stage for a rustic atmosphere. “It was very important to have continuity from room to room,” Cuthbertson says. “We spent a lot of time thinking about the details and making selections with that goal in mind.” To see more from Cuthbertson Homes, visit cuthbertsonhomes.com.

At the heart of the home sits the great room. Exposed wood beams – a French design staple – draw the eye upward to two rustic farmhouse-style chandeliers. Adding a bit of drama, a stone fireplace goes up to the ceiling and is flanked by illuminated recesses. Dreamy cream carpeting works to balance the natural roughness of the stone, while rich colors in the furniture bring the room together. “All the natural elements combine to create an inviting ambiance of warmth and coziness,” Cuthbertson points out. “Everything from the fireplace to the beams and the fixtures just enhances the feel.” The flooring transitions to a hickory wide plank in the formal dining room. A wrought iron chandelier and complementary light fixtures along the wall are another nod to the French provincial style. Parsons chairs surround the wooden dining table arranged with a neutral runner and single lantern centerpiece – the picture of traditional elegance. Brick and stone: Acme Brick, Tile & Stone

Open to the main living spaces, the kitchen has a timeless look due, in part, to its color palette and classic configuration. Calcutta marble countertops and creamy white perimeter cabinetry work to lighten up the space, while pops of bronze elements add a sophisticated touch. A multipurpose island – topped with more Calcutta marble and a prep sink – serves as a workspace, storage space, and extra seating. A stately stone wall surrounds the range and mirrors the fireplace on the other end of the home. Warm wood accents, including a reclaimed beam above the range, give the room texture and detail while contributing to the rustic feel of the home. “I feel like the kitchen, along with the great room, really captures the essence of the French provincial style,” Cuthbertson says. “I especially love the continuity captured by the stove area and fireplace. The prominent stone and reclaimed beams balance both ends with a clear line of sight.” Appliances and plumbing fixtures: Ferguson Cabinetry: Hitson Cabinets, Inc. In the master bedroom, more browns and creams can be found. The height of the four-post bed creates a focal point in the center of the room, and on either side, symmetrical nightstands outfitted with identical lamps further cement the French styling. Natural light fills the bedroom from a large picture window. According to Cuthbertson, being able to capture the beauty of the outdoor setting was important. “A very important aspect of the

project was capturing the view of the fairway and mountains in the background with numerous and expansive windows, he says. Another large window sits above the marble bathtub in the master bathroom. Light and airy, this room is as luxurious as it is practical. Multiple mirrors and gold-toned fixtures dress up the space, while a symmetrical his and hers vanity provides the appropriate tie-in to the French styling.

estled in among nearly 200 acres of lush pasture and dense forest, this inviting home is the quintessential farmhouse. Functionality meets style with a careful consideration of colors and materials for the homeowners’ family of three. “From the beginning, this project adhered to a pretty traditional notion of what it means to own a farmhouse,” explains Steve Ward, president of Sun Construction. “Our main goal was to come in and have this property be as maintenance-free as possible for our busy homeowners.”

DOUBLE DUTCH DOOR DELIGHT From the moment visitors approach this chic home, they are immediately welcomed with a sense of true Southern hospitality. Rich stamped concrete serves as the foundation for the full wrap-around porch. Pure white Hardie board gives way to a Haint Blue ceiling – a long-standing Southern tradition thought to protect from spirits and bugs alike by mimicking the sky. The most captivating element of the home’s exterior, however, is a set of mahogany double Dutch doors that provides a glimpse straight through the heart of the home and to the views on the other side. “Deciding how we wanted to position the home was something we spent a good bit of time on,” says Ward. “There’s a great view everywhere you look. It was just a matter of spinning the house so that you had the perfect view from the front end of the house all the way through the back.” To see more from Sun Construction, visit sun-construction.net.

Once inside the home, a true traditional farmhouse layout starts to emerge. To the right sits a formal living room. Prime for conversation or curling up with a book, this space marries an array of pale pinks for a cheery atmosphere. A white shiplapped accent wall features a gas fireplace with stone surround and a warm wooden mantel that complements the bronze and brass accents found in the furniture and fixtures.

168 |

To the left of the entryway is the dining room, complete with a traditional wooden farmhouse table. A bench accommodates guests on one side, while six ladder back chairs round out the seating arrangement. Here, a shiplap wall and rustic pendant light match that of the formal living room and provide cohesion between the two spaces.

Further into the home, the great room draws on elements previously seen in other areas. Two insets repeat the home’s signature shiplap, and the same stone used in the formal living room can be found here – this time surrounding a larger wood-burning fireplace. In this room, the largely neutral color palette is accentuated with pops of blue, and two dark wooden beams overhead run the length of the room and provide additional visual interest. Open to the home’s great room is its kitchen. Here, a banquet table, which was made from the reclaimed wood of a century-old barn that was on the property, commands the room. The table, which features bench seating on three sides, is surrounded by a U-shaped island capped with durable quartz countertops. “This table was definitely a design consideration, and in a way, it shaped a lot of the dimensions for the rest of the main living areas,” explains Jay Caughman of Caughman + Caughman Architects. “Once we had this table right, we sort of backed off of that to form the rest of the kitchen, and from there, that dimension translated to the dining room.” Simple white shaker-style cabinetry is double stacked and runs all the way to the ceiling, maintaining the crisp and clean ambiance the homeowners set out to achieve. Classic white subway tiles line the backsplash of the kitchen and butler’s pantry, while a dark wooden range hood that matches the beams in the living room provides the perfect amount of color to the room. Several steps away, a bar area accommodates six and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Appliances and lighting and plumbing fixtures: Ferguson | Countertops and tile: Stone Source, Inc.

Also off the main floor is the master suite. Another shiplap accent wall builds on the existing cohesion, but this time is balanced with walls painted in Weekend blue for an embracing feng shui. A set of French doors leading to the back porch is flanked with two large sidelights and capped with transom windows to maximize the view. The view is front and center in the bathroom as well, with a freestanding tub tucked into an alcove and surrounded with windows for an added layer of tranquility. White walls and cabinetry are accompanied by a quatrefoil pattern tile floor for a pop of personality to this clean and classic, albeit functional, farmhouse. Custom Creations Commissioning a custom, one-of-akind element for your home can be the cherry on top to any room design. We called in the experts to share their tips on how to work with artists and artisans to get the perfect piece.

176 |

SUSAN BUDASH

When considering a one-of-a-kind painting or any creative media regardless of medium or genre, it’s advisable to visit local art galleries in your community. The Chattanooga area is home to many talented artists who express themselves in a variety of ways. Once you find an artist whose style, medium, and method is what you are seeking, it’s recommended that you meet with the artist to discuss the creative project you have in mind. Perhaps the artist will present a portfolio of their work and a resume listing their exhibition record and gallery representation. It’s optional, but artists may, if requested by the prospective client, provide references. For those seeking an individual or family portrait, it’s always in the best interest of both parties if the artist is able to become acquainted with the subject being portrayed.

STACY BEATY, BEATY FABRICATING & ORNAMENTAL IRON

When choosing metal work, as with any “custom” business trade, I would ask myself if the person who I was considering answers his or her phone when I call. Communication is really the key factor with any custom work because of the high level of detail involved. Another important question to ask would be regarding the schedule and when the product would be installed. I would also ask how long of a warranty I get with any product. It’s important to make sure you are comparing apples to apples when it comes to pricing, service, and quality.

RIG BURGER, RIG BURGER DESIGNS

BILL CARNEY, CHATTANOOGA WOODWORKING ACADEMY

When commissioning a custom piece of furniture or woodwork, there are several things to consider. The first is style. Choose a style that won’t go out of fashion. Traditional, arts and crafts, country, or modern are all great options, but try to follow what pleases you. Next is quality of workmanship. Finally, pick a species of wood that is of the highest quality, such as walnut, cherry, maple, white oak, heart pine, or mahogany. Remember that investing in quality wood is not usually the major cost in your project – it’s the labor. The quality of your project will be remembered long after the cost of the piece is forgotten. Support your local craftsmen, and spend your money where it will come back into the local economy. Consider these decisions carefully, and invest in fine goods that will outlast you.

I would consider the process of creating a commission piece an exciting one between the artist and the client. It’s an effort to create a unique piece of furniture for the client. A few things I would keep in mind when ordering a unique one-off piece would be the style of the artist. Does the style of the artist or craftsman fit with the style of the piece you are wanting commissioned? I like to ask clients for a few pictures of what they have in mind and then build a piece that I think fits their expectations. Just remember it’s a creative process, and the final piece may not look just like the picture!

AARON CABEEN, CABEEN ORIGINALS

When choosing an art piece, I recommend finding what you like personally – not what’s trendy. Also, if possible, try to meet the artist in person. If you’re able to understand their quirks and their approach to making their work, it adds to the story and depth of the object.

EUROPEAN LOFT LIVING BY CHRISTINA CANNON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILIP SLOWIAK

When Clay Henley, builder with Henley Brothers Construction Co., first signed on to help with the expansion of this 81-year-old home, his first order of business was to make it structurally sound. “The homeowner’s main goal with all of this was to get a nice covered back porch where she could be outside and enjoy the view,” explains Henley. “We decided to add on the second story but had to make sure it was going to be structurally sound. When you are on a bluff like this, your wind load doubles. So, to guarantee this home could withstand 75 mile per hour winds, we gave the addition new footing and anchored it to the bedrock, and then we have a steel frame that goes all the way up to the roof line.” Builder: Henley Brothers Construction Co. Architect: River Street Architecture

178 |

| 179

SCENIC STAIRWAY The steel frame Henley had planned for the home came in handy when it was time to build this staircase to a secondstory apartment space. “This staircase was originally supposed to be wood, but then we pivoted and decided to make it a marble staircase,” says Henley. “We were fortunate that we had framed it strong enough that the bones were able to hold the marble.” To see more from Henley Brothers Construction Co., visit henleybrothers.com.

Once at the top of the marble staircase, the homeowner’s sleek euro style is apparent. Tongue and groove yellow pine ceilings warm up the space, and the same yellow pine is used in the room’s trim. A hydronic floor heating system is hidden by ceramic tile and works to provide a nice even heat in the winter months. Walnut slab cabinetry runs throughout the kitchen and reinforces the color palette, while a Labradorite Blue granite waterfall countertop provides additional prep space and accommodates two barstools. The same material, which features beautiful flakes of blue, can be found on the island. Along the perimeter, lustrous stainless-steel appliances and countertops tie into the 182 |

exposed duct work of the room and the finishes of various plumbing and lighting fixtures. “This kitchen presented a unique challenge in that this loft was really designed to offer everything someone would need to live solely in this space, so while we were working with abbreviated space, we still wanted to offer all the functionality of a full size kitchen,” explains Jackie Howard of Scarlett’s Cabinetry. “Also, with the view being the main attraction, we didn’t want to obstruct it with any wall cabinets. Every single base cabinet was designed to not waste one inch of space, and in order to do that, we incorporated everything from roll-outs and spice racks to cutlery and tray dividers.”

Around the corner from the kitchen is the loft’s bathroom. With no thresholds, this room takes advantage of every square inch while simultaneously improving accessibility. Back downstairs, steel frame doors are able to accommodate large panels of glass to maximize the view and draw visitors outside. The home’s back porch serves as an extension of the living area and is built upon metal joists and decking that is topped with a concrete floorboard and then flagstone. The end result is a home that is as structurally sound as it is beautiful and functional. “This project was an awesome addition to the homeowner’s house,” says Henley. “She took what was a nearly century-old craftsman cottage and turned it into something really unique, which has taken on a whole new style and encompasses exactly what is important to her.”

CREATING CONTINUITY

When the McCoy Homes team begins to develop a new floor plan with one of our clients, we not only want to consider functionality, but we also want to think about the placement and orientation of furniture in each room. We encourage them to consider the size and placement of doors, windows, and cased openings, as well as the orientation of circulation patterns and the overall efficiency of each of the spaces in their home. As for the interior design elements, we encourage repeating a specific design element throughout the home to tie one space to the next. Examples could be using the same color palette or staying within the same hardware finish for plumbing, mirrors, cabinet pulls, and door handles. We want our clients to envision the way that they will live in their home and help them design spaces that will be functional and livable – as well as luxurious. Connie McCoy, McCoy Homes, Inc.

Your home should be uniquely you, but when it comes to design and décor, how do you make sure your tastes flow effortlessly throughout your home? Read on for professional tips on how to tie your spaces together with style.

With today’s living styles changing to a relaxed feel with open floor plans, it is so important to create spaces that take advantage of this. I always identify the purpose and focal point of the room. This could be the fireplace, a grand view, or space for a large TV. This allows me to then incorporate features such as stone, brick, beams, wood, or decorative lighting that add interest. Often times a large space needs to be cozier, and that can be done by floating the sofa with a table behind it or creating different vignettes in the space for seating or a game table. If the room is small, I try to maximize the floor space with careful furniture placement while keeping walkways open (but making sure things don’t look lined up against the wall). A larger area rug can also make a space feel larger or tie spaces together. Jodi Brewer, JL Brewer Designs, LLC

— TRENDS —

When I’m working through a floor plan with a client, the very first thing we do is make a list of their needs and discuss how their family functions. If you don’t talk about this on the front end of the design, it will make for a lot of disappointment and underutilized space post-construction. Ask yourself questions like: “What activities do we do within our home?” “What things do I need to store?” “Where do I need privacy?” “Who will we host here?” Once I know how your home should function, I begin to plan how to utilize space most efficiently through elements like built-in cabinetry or specific furniture pieces that will best serve your needs. Use consistent colors that fit within your home’s palette, and have fun selecting furniture pieces that you love! Lindsey Frost, Frost Designs, Inc.

Most homeowners at some point dream about taking a wall (or several) out of an existing floor plan to improve their homes. If only I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked, “Do you think that wall is load-bearing?” It’s not uncommon though to walk into a home that is dark and compartmentalized and understand immediately why they ask that question. People often live in homes and come to realize there is a disconnect between their preferred lifestyle and their current living arrangement. If changing the structure isn’t a realistic option, then we often look to lighting as a less invasive way to connect rooms. You can use lighting to brighten your path down darkened hallways or draw you through transition areas. Make sure to eliminate gaps in light flow, and reduce dark corners and black holes in your lighting plan. John Coffelt, HGH Construction, LLC

There are many ways to define and integrate open floor plans so that the space doesn’t feel overwhelming. Your furniture placement around the focal point in your room, such as a fireplace, is a good place to start. That would generally be the largest gathering area to place your sofa and chairs. In a corner of the space, using a table and chairs for reading, games, or puzzles is perfect. Being able to leave the table undisturbed works well in those areas. Lighting needs to be considered and is very important in defining your space. Look at good overhead lighting combined with floor and table lamps. Consider using different heights in your space. It will keep the space interesting and give definition to different areas. I believe home is where the heart is. Know that what makes you feel comfortable and happy will always be the best design. Limestone floors, oak beams, and un-lacquered brass plumbing fixtures contribute to the old-world charm, while perimeter quartzite countertops are a durable option. The same Perla Venato brushed quartzite found along the walls forms a full slab backsplash and serves as a major focal point. JULIET BRALY, JULIET BRALY INTERIOR DESIGN

Custom cabinets are taking on more warm hues these days. We’re seeing warm gray and rich milk chocolate stains on really grainy woods, and distressed woods are being reinvented on more contemporary door styles. For an updated layout, I like to use fewer wall cabinets, which allows more space for a beautiful backsplash, larger windows, or creative elements. Quartz and quartzite countertops remain a favorite because of the durability, stain resistance, and color/pattern options. Clients are beginning to see appliances as a fashion piece. With a variety of color and texture options, you can really interject some fun personality into an otherwise neutral palette, and farmhouse sinks remain a great option since they can take on many looks. My favorite configuration is a double bowl with a low center divider. This allows you to separate dishes but still be able to fit an entire baking sheet under the spout.

JACKIE HOWARD, SCARLETT’S CABINETRY

After many years of all-white kitchens, we are seeing a change in the finish of cabinetry. Natural grained, lightly stained wood tones are back. We are seeing more pops of color in the islands, and there is no doubt brass is back, but in a quieter brushed finish. Another popular hardware option is matte black. Clients are taking appliances more seriously. Large commercial 48-inch ranges provide a great way to have everything you need in one space. Steam ovens are perfect for families who want to prepare healthy meals, and less homeowners are caring about a microwave. We are seeing clients who want cabinetmatching appliance panels opposed to stainless-steel appliances. With the continued popularity of small appliances, appliance garages are an awesome option. Creating island “table” seating is great for family time, so even two islands are becoming popular: one for a workspace and one for casual meals or homework and games!

NANCY HETEM, CROSS CABINETS

We continue to see the open floor plan as the most popular trend. We see lots of mixing of finishes with stain and paint colors in one kitchen area. Cabinets are going to the ceiling, making a very visual impact. Usually the top cabinets have glass and lights to accent this height. The island continues to be functional on one side, often with the sink or stovetop, and then a gathering spot for family on the other side. Wood decorative hoods are popular and are often painted or stained a different color than the wall cabinets. Shades of white continue to be very strong, but we are starting to see some lightly stained, natural-looking woods for accents. Floating shelves are replacing some of the wall cabinets, and the natural wood look breaks up all the white cabinets. The other popular color is a deep gray, almost black accent color. Flat black hardware is also gaining popularity.

KRIS KEITH, CLASSIC CABINETRY

While I love seeing some new color trends with blues, greens, and wood tones, I think my favorite trend is the resurgence of the larder cabinet. Lately we’ve seen an increased interest in the larder look, but totally repurposed for today’s needs. Larders designed with pocket doors and ample countertop space create efficient work zones, with everything within arm’s reach, that can be quickly closed up when guests arrive. Fun applications for modern-day larders not only include custom shelves and pullouts for storage of pantry items, dishes, and cookware, but also deeper shelves equipped with electrical outlets for storage of small appliances to be used in place. It has become a working pantry of sorts, where often-used small appliances or even office equipment can be opened up for easy access or beautifully closed away out of sight.

DAVID FERRY, FERGUSON

When it comes to kitchens, everything is constantly evolving, and one of the top evolutions is centered around appliances. Stainless-steel is starting to give way to matte black, and a lot of homeowners are choosing to hide appliances altogether. Refrigerators, dishwashers, and even pantries and appliance bays are all being redesigned to flow with the existing cabinetry. We’re also seeing a flurry of new technology enter the appliance space. From ovens to freezers, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi-enabled devices are on the rise, and automation is becoming something more people are looking for. Appliances are at the heart of every kitchen, so it will be interesting to see how these changes influence the way we feed our families.

ERIC JOHNSON, PIG HOUSE CABINETS

The major design trend this year is the use of bold colors. Colors like Naval, Gale Force, and Steel Wool are making dramatic changes across all styles of kitchens. Many are contrasting some of the newer stain colors, like a worn maple, with bold paint colors to create a strong transition into other living spaces of the home. Choosing to place champagne hardware on the bolder paint colors provides for an excellent accent. Adding black stainless-steel appliances and a light-colored, marblelook quartz seems to be the final pieces of the puzzle for a beautiful kitchen this year.

JIMMY CROSS, DAKOTA CONCEPTS INC.

Top kitchen design trends this year would be simple lines such as shaker-style cabinetry painted in off-white or one of the many shades of gray. Decorative hoods and islands serve as accent pieces and are often a contrasting color to complement the primary color of the kitchen cabinets. Everyone loves the feel of an open design, and we are starting to use more floating shelves instead of enclosed cabinets to accomplish this. Pullout storage is also becoming very popular. It is amazing the options we have now such as pullout waste baskets, pullout spice racks, pullout pot and pan drawers, and so much more. Stone countertops have most of the market, whether it be granite or quartz. Pretty much all sinks are under mount, including the apron-front sinks, which provide a much cleaner look.

CAROL MACKINNON, CKD, ANA WOODWORKS

I am seeing sustainability rediscovered in the design world with both eco-friendly design and biophilic design. We all don’t live in warm climates that enable us to open our doors and connect with nature, but we can rely on elements that symbolize the outdoors. Past trends have somewhat moved away from natural finishes and stone, but they have made a comeback in 2020. Plants, wall gardens, and large glass windows are gaining in popularity and provide a way to connect to nature. I have seen more transitional kitchen design, which I think is the best of all worlds. The flat-style cabinet door often seen in contemporary design has made its way into the transitional kitchen style. I am designing more minimalist kitchens with clean lines but am incorporating warm finishes for the cabinets, countertops, flooring, and walls. I have always been a fan of designing a space for my customers to make them feel a sense of belonging.

CATHERINE CRABTREE, HITSON CABINETS, INC.

We are seeing a renewed interest in stained finishes with an emphasis on weathered stains and textures, such as knotty alder, wormy maple, and circle-sawn oak. Additionally, black and deep blue cabinetry is popular and is often used in base cabinets combined with white wall cabinets. Custom handcrafted hoods, glass doors with shaped mullions, and floating shelves are especially desirable. Customers are eager to use every inch of available space with drawer organizers, roll-out trays, and tray, spice, and trash can pullouts. Built-in appliances sport custom panels, which match the cabinet doors, and hardware is brighter than in past years, with brushed gold, satin brass, and copper finishes being among the most popular.

Clean lines and neutral colors are king in this spacious kitchen. Open to the home’s great room, warm shaker-style wall cabinets painted in Analytical Gray allow the kitchen to blend effortlessly into adjacent areas. Light Alaskan White granite countertops with dark gray veining add a hint of drama and are a durable option, while elegant white subway tiles line the room’s back wall. Tying in easily with the color found in the countertops is the island, which is painted in Caviar. Measuring 20 feet long and 5 feet wide, this prominent island provides plenty of space for entertaining, and dual sinks make prepping and cooking meals a breeze. Double ovens, a microwave drawer, and a professional range – complete with a telescopic downdraft system – are a chef’s paradise. Six lowback barstools with light gray fabric add to the classic nature of this kitchen. With clean and modern details throughout, this space accentuates form following function.

The best of both worlds come together in this beautiful bathroom that expertly blends patterns, colors, textures, and materials. A white and black hexagon mosaic sets the stage for this unique space and provides a vintage flair, while a custom washed and glazed hickory vanity for two adds warmth to the space. A beaded inset frame with louvered doors pays homage to days come and gone, and rich gold-framed mirrors and sconces liven up the Chantilly Lace walls. Spectrum Pristine quartz countertops cap the vanity and can be found topping a bench in the room’s stunning shower. Here, hand-molded glossy green subway tiles flip the script on the existing color palette and tie into botanical accents found right around the corner near a freestanding tub. The room’s crown jewel, however, is its large zero-entry shower outfitted with an array of showerheads. Here, the same porcelain tile that covers the floor wraps the shower and exudes a spa-like feel stemming from the natural stone appearance. A geometric tile accent element commands the back wall, and the same pattern, comprised of diamonds and squares, is seen on the inside of a niche resting just above a full-length, built-in bench. THE BEAUTY OF STONE & TILE Stone and tile trends are constantly shifting, but one thing’s for certain – these accents can set the tone for your entire home. Whether you’re looking for a new floor for your bathroom or a stunning backsplash for your kitchen, read on to see our experts’ top picks.

Pattern and color are back! Thanks to the popularity of encaustic cement tiles like Lili Cement Tiles, colorful patterned floors are the new statement wall. Some designers describe it as the fifth wall of a room. There are a variety of ways to achieve a colorful patterned floor. There are printed porcelain tiles from Soho Studios made to look like cement with the durability and low maintenance of porcelain. My new favorite is a mixture of different colored marble tiles in triangle and trapezoid shapes by Altura Stone that can be put together in multiple patterns. And for the other four walls of the room, Walker Zanger has introduced lines like Pietta Donovan and Harper with vibrant and rich colorways and different playful shapes. I am hearing more clients say they want to have fun with their spaces. Anna Baker, Stone Source, Inc.

White quartzite still reigns as the hottest countertop for kitchens and baths. Quartzite is a natural stone similar to marble but with interesting veining and a surface that is stronger. Don’t forget the sealer, though, as it does need that. The white and gray color palette continues to dominate for kitchens, and quartzites (and stones in that family) have the most beautiful gray swirls and crystals that you just can’t find in granite, marble, or man-made quartz products. Working with stone for seven years, I have to say it is my favorite, and pairing a tile backsplash has never been easier, regardless if it’s with a porcelain subway tile or even a white quartzite tile. Of course, you can always go with the full-height stone backsplash so that the veins travel up the wall – a truly beautiful finished look. Kelley Carrin, Chattanooga Granite & Marble

On a virtual trip down the aisles of Coverings last week, I found myself in awe of the expansive ways tile will be incorporated in 2020. Riding a wave of new thought, individuals long to express interpretations of divine living, and they are shifting their focus from what has been to blazing a trail of meaningful spaces. This year, the neutral color palette is notably warm. Individuals are also incorporating hues of blue, earthy sage, and restful moss, touting hints of bold brights to liven the mood. Twinkling terrazzo and textural influences create large-scale patterns for industrial chic design. Thoughtful use of unusual mosaics – trapezoid and mixed geometrics – frame tile designs with the unexpected. Porcelain countertops in a menagerie of stone visuals offer stain and heat resistance – a welcome alternative for the end user. From aged metal and emulated marble to limestone and warm refined wood, tile has become a homeowner’s sustainable choice.

A material becoming popular for countertops is dolomite. Dolomite gives you the beauty of marble but is much more durable. Dolomite is also harder to etch than marble, despite being similar in terms of appearance. When it comes to performance, dolomite slabs are quite resistant to wear and tear, and they can be thought of as a more resilient form of marble. Dolomite is also relatively affordable, which is always nice! Jessica Hurst, The Tile Store

Whites and grays have been a classic and timeless look for many years. Now, we are seeing the blue tones come in, ranging from a soft blue-gray to a deep navy blue. Bringing a splash of color to an island or the lower cabinets is a refreshing and inviting look that adds richness to any room. With this exciting new demand, a couple of quartz manufacturers have started incorporating navy tones in many of their new designs. In the past, the leathered, brushed, and antique finishes were reserved for granite. Now, you can find quartz available in matte, suede, and leathered finishes as well! Don’t be afraid to mix colors or finishes. Sherrie Ward, Webco, Inc.

The clean and fresh look of grays and whites is in this year. These warm neutrals create the perfect backdrop for champagne bronze and brushed brass fixtures. These soothing aesthetics are complemented by utilizing a herringbone pattern or a vertical stack for an even more clean and refined finish. We’re seeing customers lean toward medium to large size tile options such as 12-by-24 inch and 4-by-16 inch, creating an open and welcoming space. Trending installation methods include the use of Ditra or Dural CI++ underlayments, which provide for an exceptionally reliable base. Additionally, Level Lock systems for rectified edge tiles ensure a flawless installation. Richard Wilkerson, Wilkerson Tile Co., LLC

THE WORLD OF WINDOWS & DOORS When it comes to picking out windows and doors, be it original or replacement, the options can seem daunting. So, what do you need to keep in mind before making a purchase? We asked the professionals.

There are many things to consider when shopping for windows. Changing or updating the look of the home, along with improving energy efficiency, are two of the top reasons people replace their windows. One of the main areas to concentrate on when you’re considering replacement windows is the window type: wood, hybrid, metal composite, or vinyl. You want to be certain you are getting a reinforced and insulated frame while also paying close attention to the spacer, glass, and sash. Choosing very energyefficient and high-performing insulated glass is important. In addition, the frame material, color, style, experience of the installer, installation method, and warranty are all critical when choosing a replacement contractor. Matt Hullander, Hullco, Inc.

Warm a family room or study by changing window interiors to a cherry wood, or upgrade glass in your sunroom to better protect your furnishings and make it more comfortable to relax in. Perhaps you opt for brushed chrome window hardware for that kitchen window view. It’s touches like these that professionals like us may suggest and that are the key to turning your house into your home.

The first thing I would do is decide on the style of door/window, which will go with the design of the exterior of the house. If you have a covered porch, you can go either way – a solid stained wood door or a smooth fiberglass door for painting. Stained wood doors are generally either mahogany, knotty alder, or fir. I do not suggest using hardwood doors when they are exposed to direct weather. There are many choices of fiberglass door styles with different wood grains that can be stained, and they will hold up much better to direct weather. Iron decorative doors are another good choice, particularly for an old-world look, and they hold up to all weather conditions. Interior doors should also be fitted to the style of the house. Wood doors are an excellent choice if you prefer stained doors with painted woodwork. Once you go to a wood door, the choices are endless.

Homeowners may not realize how custom and unique a replacement window can be. These windows can easily be designed for each room and work to capture a great view or bring in natural light. The overall beauty of a window can bring several elements together and infuse the indoor and outdoor ambiance. It truly can captivate the best of both features while incorporating personal style. Equally important is the quality of installation. Look for true craftsmanship accompanied by the highest ratings for window lines. The OKNA series is a great example of a quality window line and has set itself apart from all others on the market. Trey Moon, Window Works of Chattanooga

For many people, windows and doors are a once-ina-lifetime purchase, so it is essential to make a list of the features that are important to you. Durability is a key feature to consider. Over the years, the weather will take its toll on your windows and doors, and they must withstand strong winds, heavy rains, and extreme temperatures. Architectural style is another key feature to consider. As you look around your home, you will notice that windows and doors play a very important role in the inside and outside appearance of the house. Other factors to consider are energy efficiency, natural light, and ease of maintenance. The most important choice you will make when purchasing your windows and doors is who will be installing them. Find a company who you can trust. They should tell you what to expect, when to expect it, and how much it will cost. Mallory Harrison, East Chattanooga Lumber & Supply Co.

DINING ROOMS In this exquisite dining room, all eyes are on the Strada pendant golden chandelier – a perfect conversation starter for an unforgettable evening in this distinctive environment. But the notable elements don’t stop there. From the expansive trestle-style wooden table with arch support to the Tudor-style upholstered chairs with antique brass nailhead trim and skirted host chairs on casters, each piece makes a stand-alone statement while also blending seamlessly with the room’s other components for a sense of drama and intrigue. Either end of the room is flanked by a staircase leading to the private spaces of the residence, while custom draperies highlight one of the home’s interior archways, providing a look into the living room and beyond. On the opposite wall, a grand wood-burning fireplace adds weight to the room, while a large mirror sits atop, drawing in light. A bold marriage of contemporary and traditional styles, the space is suited to fulfill the homeowner’s needs for both elaborate entertaining as well as dining for two. Memories of coastal vacations inspired this warm and elegant dining space, designed for a professional couple downsizing for retirement. The color palette, consisting of warm, neutral hues, contributes to the overall concept for the room; walls, painted in a soft blue-gray, harken back to the skies and ocean breeze along the shorelines, while custom draperies, tufted dining chairs, and light fixtures mimic soft, clean sands. The textures – everything from linen to wood, woven straw, rustic metals, and more – further connect and enhance the space. Given the neutral color palette, opportunity presents to mix and match furniture to make a clever statement. Additional accessories add visual and textural interest, and greenery further livens the room, popping against its more muted counterparts. A gently distressed glass-front credenza serves as the perfect space to store dishes for entertaining year-round and making new memories.

Contrast is key in this modern yet approachable dining room that welcomes visitors with an updated take on a classic combination: black and white. Painted in “White Dove” by Benjamin Moore, the bright walls beckon the eye in, while a black nail hammered fixture with gold interior packs a punch and creates balance. Neutral elements add warmth and cohesion; beneath the bold pendant light is a washed white wooden dining table with matching bench seating and mid-century modern leather chairs. An abstract painting finished with warm browns breaks up the white walls and marries nicely with the wide-plank oak flooring. A thoughtful overflow of space allows for a window seating area that features neutral upholstered wingback chairs with nailhead trim, bold velvet pillows, and a modern metallic side table – a perfect continuation of the space.

HARMONIZED HOSTING Whether you are looking to host an elegant dinner with timeless trimmings, or you just want a pop of color for a casual cocktail lunch, the design options are endless. Joe Jumper, owner of The Clay Pot in Riverview, provides a dose of inspiration for entertaining in style. PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY LONG

CLASSIC GREEN AND WHITE To create a distinct look, start with a crisp white linen tablecloth at a square table. Chivari chairs add a touch of elegance, and white dinnerware paired with green linen napkins maintains a simple color palette. A white footed urn filled with magnolia and eleagnus is a stylish and sophisticated addition. Menu cards are the perfect place to express a little personality and provide a personal touch, while clear stemware rounds out the look.

A TABLE FOR TWO This simple, yet delightful look has it all. An assortment of clear bottles and jugs is outfitted with fern cuttings, while bachelor buttons supply the tiniest pop of color. A farm table is placed next to a large tree to create a cozy atmosphere, and paprika-painted ladder back chairs invite guests in. Classic white dinnerware with taupe linen napkins rounds out the setting, giving balance and refinement to the tablescape.

GATHER AROUND THE TABLE! Southern style is front and center with this look, which is ideal for a lawn dinner. A farm table paired with a fabric wicker bench offers plenty of seating, while matching wicker chargers tie the spread together. White dinnerware is a classic option here, and potted plants provide an added level of ease. Plants and flowers – including begonias, salvia, and greenery in a variety of colors – create a growing runner down the table.

CITRUS FUN A burnt orange linen lays the foundation for fun in this bright tablescape. Complementary blues can be found in the pottery dinnerware, and gray linen napkins provide additional contrast. Flipping the script on traditional place cards, peat pots are filled with moss and have guests’ names written on the side. To pull all the colors together, three white glazed vases are overflowing with green hydrangeas, orange roses, bachelor buttons, snap dragons, tulips, hosta leaves, and ranunculus.

In another stunning home, this rustic retreat aims to remind pool-goers of a mountainous body of water. Broom-finished concrete gives way to a flagstone pathway that is placed along a picturesque backdrop. The flagstone used throughout the space ties in seamlessly with large boulders positioned along the landscape. These boulders culminate in a large waterfall at one end of the freeform pool. Nearby, a diving board provides a dose of fun, while a fire pit enveloped with the same stone found on the home’s exterior provides a spot to kick back and relax. Inside the pool, a sun ledge offers a great place to beat the heat, and the area’s signature waterfall is complete with an alcove and bench for those looking for extra privacy. With an array of natural stone accentuated by a soothing cascade, this outdoor oasis blends perfectly into the style of the rustic home.

OPEN AIR UPDATES From fire tables to furniture finds, certain updates can make your backyard both relaxing and inviting. These local experts offer up the perfect tips for transforming your outdoor space into a personal oasis.

One of the most popular architectural features in our pools today are what we call sun shelves or tanning ledges. These are areas in the pool that are anywhere from 6 inches to 12 inches deep. They vary in size and shape but are generally large enough to allow for one or two lounge chairs to fit on them comfortably. They make specially designed chairs for this called ledge loungers where, when seated, your body is partially in and out of the water. By combining this with a built-in umbrella sleeve, you can keep cool but not get your hair wet. Another wonderful feature of a sun shelf is the ability to add fountain features like plume jets that bubble upward from the shelf, giving off a soothing sound and becoming an aquatic playground for the little ones. It’s like having your own private resort! Ron Coker Jr., Master Pools by Artistic Pools, Inc.

The No. 1 trend we’ve seen for outdoor areas is fire. In the past, families would gather outdoors around a campfire to spend time together and roast marshmallows. But now, fire tables give you the ambiance of a campfire without the work. A fire table can be used in every season, and it’s multifunctional. Plus, this is a product that the whole family will use, and it promotes a sense of tranquility and togetherness. I think there’s also been a pull toward zero-maintenance materials, and that’s where Adirondack furniture comes into play. It’s always been popular, but more than ever, it’s sought after for its durability without the maintenance – you don’t have to paint it, stain it, you barely have to clean it! Our customers lead busy lives, and the less they have to do, the more appealing a product is. Carter Fowler, Fowler Brothers Co.

Taking the inside out has been a major trend. We continue to see homeowners and commercial developers spend a higher percentage of their overall budget on their outdoor living spaces. Outdoor kitchens and fire pits are becoming more common in new builds as there is a growing expectation for this to become a standard amenity with most homes and hotels. From a natural stone aspect, we’re seeing a trend toward marble being used in outdoor spaces along with the local sandstone and mountain stone that have been used more traditionally.

Recently we’ve seen a trend toward inpool seating to allow for more gathering around the pool. This can be done by installing ledge lounges, which can be enhanced with cushions, pillows, etc. These are great for comfort while hosting family and guests and allow for several people to comfortably gather around the pool. We’ve also seen a trend toward travertine, which is a type of limestone. It’s very versatile, making it a great fit for all types of outdoor areas. It’s a beautiful stone that comes in a variety of colors and is a great fit for anyone! It’s very durable, easy on the eyes, and easy on the feet!

This year, decorative concrete is becoming very trendy for patios, pool decks, and driveways. You first need to repair the damaged surface and then have a custom colored acrylic system applied, which is ideal to give it color and protect the surface. Average wear will require a touchup about every five to seven years, but some cases have seen nine years with no appreciable wear. Clients can use a layered color process to achieve a decorative finish in their choice of color, and a polymer-concrete overlay can be stamped or troweled on to give it texture. For new concrete, stamp patterns, in-lays, or dye-packs can also be used to add color or texture, and the possibilities are endless with new concrete construction.
