WELCOME Why We Need Magazines

Fl IPPI n G OPE n a w E ll-K n O wn UK magazine, I was pleased to discover an exquisitely written travel article. although it lacked a little magic, it was written in a startling, contemporary style. Its author was from what used to be called the third world with quotes almost exclusively from locals or those from fellow third world nations, and, on careful reading, thoroughly suffused with Eastern philosophy. For all of those things it was entirely fresh, new, unexpected. absolutely nothing like the magazine travel writing to which I had become accustomed. Perhaps a couple thousand words, it captured the quintessence of the place in a few anecdotes and descriptions. In that way, it was very much like most magazine travel articles.

Part of the shock and glee upon reading it was the refreshing realization that here indeed was editorial, and by that, I mean writing with no discernible advertising purpose. writing which introduces the reader to a whole world created by the author. The motivation of the author is simply to write it into being. That alone was in stark contrast to what I had been subjected to, I mean, reading for the better part of a year, online.

what those online pieces lacked, and what this magazine article had, was the sheer power of words – the ability to say something, anything just for the sheer pleasure of it. all the online work I had been reading was in service, ultimately, of making money. I, as reader, was subjected to a bulging and bungling processions of words whose aim was so transparently to make someone money that I was constantly dejected. I’d get to the end of a piece only to think, oh, all of those words were just to get me to buy this product or refer me to this service? Reading online has largely become an exercise in wading through advertising carefully disguised as information. The reader is not a person, the reader is treated as a pocketbook, a bank account, a credit card. words are only stand-ins, substitutes for the real

commerce taking place.

It may very well be that online, web, and social media authorship constitute a style and genre unto themselves. language evolves or dies and this new, online genre may be the latest incarnation of English. Much of its impetus though is driven by SEO (search engine optimization), affiliate links and monetization. The communication is not so much clumsy as it is, rather bizarrely at times, ridden with references that neither help move the story along, nor inform, nor elucidate any clarifying point, nor express anything worthwhile at all. (I do not need to hear about your dog’s vet appointment prior to getting to a recipe; I do not need to know every website you visited before booking your travel just to get to your holiday recommendations). Driven by commerce and clicks it makes for awkward reading. Entire paragraphs about nothing that would have been cut by an editor, but which remain, because user engagement is key. words chosen not for their accuracy but because they rank well with search engines. Ideas culled entirely from social media or trending hashtags. words chosen for analytics and monetization are something else.

as the actual words and their meaning have no intrinsic value and are just a vehicle for steering readers’ behaviour toward certain actions, which all culminate with spending money, it really does not matter who writes the story (or what writes the story, in the case of aI). The lure of this type of online article may be that it is accessible, anyone can do it, anywhere in the world. Grammar and prose be damned. words be damned. Sense be damned. Reader be damned. There is no created world. The author does not even attempt it. where’s the money in that?

In a magazine there is always a question of length. word count is limited. On the web, everything is an infinite scroll. Eventually, you’ll land on something you like, something you buy. This leads to stories that are inflated beyond need

and which become tedious to the reader. One of the most important aspects of writing is what you leave out. Editing is the hardest part. “not that the story need be long, but it will take a long while to make it short,” wrote Henry David Thoreau. Editing takes time. attention-grabbing headlines, attention seeking stories, attention sucking paragraphs that hide key points are what currently sell. By today’s online standards, it takes too long to edit, and the point is not to make reading enjoyable anyway.

Magazines are discerning (ideally). They turn down advertisers they deem contrary to their editorial direction, try to appeal to their readers’ tastes and they take loads of varying ideas and distill them to a few trends. not everything makes the cut. That was the beauty of that travel article in that UK magazine. It was an impression of a place not a recitation of everything that happened, a lot was cut out.

Perhaps it’s a matter of degrees. Every magazine must carefully dance between editorial and advertising. attracting both is at the heart of success. It seems though that online work takes this one step further, relying even more heavily on advertorial and advertising than was ever the case with magazines. That UK article was the only piece of writing I encountered last year. It was the only piece that was not trying to sell me something. If magazines are the last refuge of editorial, of writing, then that alone makes them worthy of saving.

writing is an art. writing is considered. Every writer wants to make money from his or her work, of course. But, that’s secondary. Expression is the first aim – creating a world from a blank page. when writing is dictated solely (or primarily) by money, is it really writing?

Planting roses in zone 3 takes careful consideration from choosing the right variety that will thrive in our finicky climate to the optimal depth for bare roots to over-winter care.

CHOOSING A PLANT

Consider bare root plants with 2-3 canes which will establish better in our short growing season. Generally, shrub roses are most adaptable to our zone. Alternatively, start miniature roses from seed. They will take several years before blooming but are wonderful for those with small spaces.

PLANTING

Choose a sunny spot that is protected from the wind and drains well. Dig deep! Roses need to be planted at least 6-12 inches (1530 cm) deep. Fill the bottom of the hole with calcium and magnesium rich compost (banana peels, for example) and work 1 cup of bone meal into the soil per plant. Allow this mixture to rest for a week before planting. Place roots in hole, cover with soil and water. Greenhouse grown roses in pots that are not dormant require more careful handling but should be planted similarly. If rose is grafted, plant union below the surface of the soil.

CARE

Roses require plenty of water. Early mornings or late at nights are the best times for watering so as to not burn leaves. Each year, refresh soil with a new layer of compost or worm castings. While deadheading spent blooms is recommended, hips which contain high levels of vitamin C and can be made into jams, will not form.

FALL & WINTER

Mulch will help tremendously providing insulation to roots and protection from temperature extremes. Use wood chips or straw or leaves secured with burlap that has been weighted down. If roses have been planted in pots, bury the entire pot in the ground leaving canes exposed above ground. Throughout the winter, shovel snow onto plants, especially when they are situated in a protected area. If you do not have access to ground soil because you live in an apartment for example, cover the pot and plant in several layers of felt or burlap. When spring arrives, clear any mulch as it may lead to rot.

Fragrant Varieties

Blanc Double de Coubert : incredibly fragrant white blooms give way to burnt orange hips. ● Roseraie de l'Hay : magenta semi double flower with strong scent and repeat flowering. ● Sarah Van Fleet : late blooming, fragrant, thorny but requires extra cover over winter.
10 | SPRInG 2024 | citystyleandliving.com

For Hips

● Fru Dagmar Hastrup : resembling a larger version of the Alberta rose the single pink petals become hips which can be harvested after the first frost.

● William Lobb : tall, old moss rose; flowers in mid-summer.

● Glauca : petals display an ombre effect becoming bright pink at edges contrasting with the dark bluish green foliage.

Canadian Bred Beauties

● Morden Centennial : developed in Canada, this lightly scented rose is compact and produces abundant blooms.

● Jens Munk: a compact disease resistant Rugosa hybrid with a rich scent.

● Therese Bugnet : gorgeous folded petals and fragrance from this Alberta hybrid.

What is a wall plate?

Wall plates are not used in outdoor environments as electric switches and other devices are installed on inside walls. Plates are used to cover and protect the wiring and connections contained within the electrical outlet box. Whether metal or plastic, all plates perform the same basic function and the decision to choose one over another is usually made for aesthetic or cost reasons.

What is an electrical outlet cover?

The Canadian Electrical Code requires that all electrical outlets on building exteriors have a cover that is certified for use in outdoor environments. Flip-type covers prevent the ingress of moisture, dust and other types of debris when the electrical outlet is not in use. While-in-use covers prevent the ingress of moisture, dust and other types of debris while the electrical outlet is in use. Whether outdoors or indoors, homeowners should always use a certified electrician to ensure code-compliant installation.

IMBIBE

Spanish Revival

Vermouth is the backbone, but unsung hero of the cocktail world – used in cocktails like martini's, Manhattan, Negronis, this herbaceous wine’s versatility is unrivalled. Thanks to a surge of vermuterías and tapas bars in Spain, there’s a modern resurgence of sipping vermouth and we couldn’t be happier.

▶ Vermouth Padró & Co stands out as a barrel aged vermouth, produced by the Padró family in the village of Bràfim, Spain since 1886. Today, the fifth generation is still involved in the winemaking process, and the aromatic white vermouth is presented in the most beautiful robin's egg blue bottle. vermouthpadro.com

Drink white vermouth chilled, or with a splash of soda to appreciate the aromas.

What is vermouth? made from a wine base, it is infused with botanicals and fortified with unaged brandy.

There are two types of white vermouth: sweet and dry. Sweet (blanc or bianco) examples include martini & Rossi and dry examples include Dolin Dry or Noilly prat. Red vermouth is usually sweet and oak barrel aged.

Origins: Originating in Northern Italy during the late 18th century for medicinal purposes, the drink became a popular aperitif, travelling to other parts of Europe including Spain and France.

▶ “A cocktail cabinet without Angostura is like a kitchen without salt and pepper.”

The iconic bitters that lift drinks to the next level of complexity. These are the classic, quintessential bitters for making an Old Fashioned or Manhattan, and add an unmistakable yet subtle kick of spice.

The Bitter Truth

Everything you Need to Know about Bitters

▶ 19th century doctor, Dr. Johann Siegert first produced the aromatic bitters as a medicinal treatment for stomach ailments, as the botanicals tempered the harsh acidity of citrus fruit, and aided in digestion. his sons went on to establish the Angostura brand in 1870 in Trinidad. The product later became a go-to for bartenders to use in a variety of cocktails and it is currently exported to 165 countries worldwide. In 2018, Drinks International Annual Bar Report named Angostura as the “number 1 selling bitters.” angosturabitters.com

Launched around 2007, the flavour is a delicate blend of spices, ‘sun ripened Caribbean’ citrus, and bitter gentian that works well in vodka, gin and whisky cocktails, and equally well with rum.

ThE sPiRiT of ThE VOLCANO

LVMH and Mexico's prominent Gallardo family have crafted a beautiful tequila blanco, Volcan de mi Tierra. Master Distiller Anna Maria Romero Mena blends blue agave from Mexico’s lowlands and highlands; herbacious, citrus, and spice notes are softened by ripe orchard fruit (cherry, peach and pear), showcasing an eloquent expression of Mexican terroir.

LA VALOMA

Ingredients

2 Oz Volcan de Mi Tierra

Locally harvested from Trinitario cacao, characteristic floral notes are infused with the nuttiness of cocoa nib. The luxuriously rich flavour works equally well in baking or add a few drops to an espresso martini to add a hint of mocha.

Tequila Blanco

3/4 Oz lime

3/4 Oz agave syrup

1.5 Oz freshly squeezed grapefruit juice pinch of salt soda water (to top)

Preparation

Pour ingredients into a glass with ice and stir gently. Strain chilled drink into a new glass with large ice cube and garnish with a grapefruit twist.

▶ DID YOu KNOW? 20 tons of agave are cooked every week in a stone oven and it takes approximately 8 years for blue agave to fully mature.

WHAT’S NEW AND GREAT IN THE WORLD OF SKIN, BEAUTY, MAKEUP AND WELL-BEING

LIQUID LINER

▶ I love the ultra hydrating formula (with vitamin E) for undereyes, which can have a tendency to crease over the course of the day. The medium coverage means I can build less or more for day or night.

BARELY THERE

Take a cue from Kylie Jenner's no makeup look at the Golden Globes – the bare, natural face is back. The focal point for this pulled together, polished look is a well hydrated pout, that looks like your natural lip colour, but slightly enhanced. as a general rule, fair, cool skin tones should look for pinks with blue undertones, medium tones should opt for dusty pinks and darker tones look amazing in bright pinks or dark berry tones. line lips with a lip liner a shade or two darker to add dimension to lips. another key to the look is well moisturized lips, choose a lipstick with hydrating properties or top with a high shine gloss. Balance the look with soft, flushed cheeks.

A dual brush (tiny calligraphy tip and fine tip) on either end of this liquid eyeliner allows for ultra precise application, whether you want a dramatic or small amount of definition. The highly pigmented, inky formula means that in a few strokes (no need to go over gaps), you can achieve a makeup-artist worthy cat eye that lasts for hours without fading. "I try to use products with the least amount of unnatural ingredients and love that this liner is formulated without the use of sulfates parabens, and fragrance," says CSl's beauty and fashion editor.

Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lords Castle ▶ BARBADOS

ThE NEWEST ALLINCLUSIvE ON ThE ISLAND

▶ Off-Season Escapes

SETTING Only 15 minutes from the airport, take a golf cart ride around the windswept property once you arrive and you'll glide past coconut palms, white sand and azure sea. You'll be strongly urged to venture to the beach only while the lifeguard is on duty. In fact, at other times beach access is completely barred.

HISTORY Once a pirate’s mansion, the hotel nicely incorporates the old 19th century structure as if it were an archaeological artifact.

DECOR Drawing from the 21st century art deco revisit that's become fashionable, the hotel is accented with gold splashes, scalloped edges and long, lean lines. The entranceway is imposing with a giant fountain as focal point. Cleverly hiding behind columns are event space and the gym (which had yet to open while we were there).

DINING The fish at this property is a standout, though at non-meal-times, it can be tricky to get food. Still, Director of Culinary, chef Prateek Basu makes an effort to accommodate every taste, fancy and whim. Whether planning for dining options to cater to every craving (food trucks, ice cream stations), tailoring the grab-and-go for those who have an early tee off or rattling off delicious menu items, he oversees and has carefully analyzed how each offering will appeal to every type of guest.

GUESTS You'll invariably meet lots of guests from the UK – a trickle of families, groups and couples – their proportion varies depending on the time of week and which flights have landed. For dinner, locals pop in at the upscale Castle View restaurant. Clearly though, the hotel was constructed to welcome foreign leaders and host conferences.

ROOMS Our deluxe ocean view room featured a large patio with seating and ocean view, with a snug bathroom.

BOTTOM LINE Soft openings are always a little stilted as construction lingers, staff are just becoming acquainted with protocols and there are expectations of more to come. There's a lot of space and plenty of potential as the hotel fully launches. — K.M.

SETTING In a spot known to Indigenous tribes for thousands of years for its healing waters, with the famous mission several blocks away, and in the heart of wine country – there's ample opportunity to take advantage of this property’s prime location – whether by shuttle to town, on hotel bicycles or simply by relaxing in one of its 226 guest rooms and suites.

DECOR Spanish colonial is the leitmotif of California, and the grounds are spacious, punctuated with gorgeous redwood trees, lawns and flowers.

ROOMS Originally built in 1927, amenities are updated though rooms can feel cramped. Charming, real-wood burning fireplaces recall its history.

DINING For breakfast, sit poolside and order the Nutella croissant and quiche from a wellthought-out menu with lots of enticing choices.

Among the highlights:

afternoon lobby wine tastings, the rather abrupt champagne "greeting" (every hotel has its false notes), and complimentary wine bottles in rooms.

SPA A day-pass will get you access to the geothermal fed mineral pools, hot tubs, and relaxation rooms, though at times, especially when busy, tranquility is at a premium.

Fairmont Claremont Hotel & Spa ▶ CALIFORNIA, USA

LIvING hISTORY

▶ A classic never goes out of style

HISTORY An icon dating to 1915, it is now a historic hotel of America.

VIBE From afar, the palatial white edifice seems to carefully watch over Berkeley, perched at a slight elevation. Once a family home, like most historic Fairmont properties, it seamlessly melds history with modern elegance. Stuffy hotel this is not. Abuzz with locals and regulars (courtesy of Claremont Club members) it's the chicest meeting place for social and family gatherings.

DÉCOR Clementinehued accents, leather semi circular seating areas combine with art deco accents like metallic fixtures and wainscotting. Tudor Revival architecture on the exterior give way to more graphic details and eclectic artwork inside that add modernity and edge, with a true sense of place. See if you can find one of its hidden gems – stop by the well tucked away Hillary Tenzing Room (it doubles as cool event space), an homage to the famed sherpa and climber who successfully reached the top of Mount Everest. Artifacts from the climb and Eastern artwork are displayed on shelving, enveloped by a cerulean wash of colour.

ROOMS Each of the 276 guest rooms and suites features individual charm and unexpected nooks as is common among historic buildings. A sophisticated and regal purple and white colour palette enhances and carries through the art deco design as does marble clad bathroom, geometric wallpaper and beautiful polished chrome finishings.

DINING At Limewood bar and restaurant Executive Chef Joseph Paire III plays to his audience, "we have guests that come here regularly – they'll get mad if I take off certain dishes." The deceptively simple NorthCal focused menu showcases seasonal fresh produce like hon-

eynut squash tartine, a hearty and rich combination of burrata, maitake mushrooms and smoked honey squash. Scallops are well seared, and sit atop a silky parsnip puree accompanied by a fresh chimichurri. The menu brims with twists on classics like the juicy, crisp fried chicken paired with craveable house made piri piri sauce.

BOTTOM LINE Sunset and sunrise views of the San Francisco Bay skyline from your room, or Limewood are especially memorable.
