EDITOR’S PICKS

One Year Later: Put In The Work, Reap The Rewards

In the December 2016 issue, I wrote about my experiences with my son’s marching band (Choose Light — Move Forward — Don’t Give Up). Last year at this time, “The Band” had missed qualifying for the State Festival by .025 points. They were disappointed; but, inspired by the best score they had achieved to-date, determined to work even harder next season. Here we are, one year later. Aching from the seemingly endless hours of practice, sunburnt and sleep-deprived, but nevertheless resolute, they did it! At High Spirited their final regular season competition, Cupcakes The Band clinched a spot at the State Festival. The cheers from their section as the score was announced was deafening. Some of the other teams commented on The Band’s level of excitement, so they told their tale: The Year of .025. The other bands got it. Everyone had been there at some point. This group of young adults has been a source of inspiration for me. They come from broadly diverse backgrounds and outside of marching band may not have much in common. But they choose to come together, every day, and work together toward a common goal…and reap the rewards of their shared success. One more step toward commonality, and a reason for hopefulness in this crazy world. I wish you all a beautiful holiday season, and until next year, all my best.

Teaspressa Opens First Pop-Up Shop Phoenix-based gourmet beverage company Teaspressa opened its first pop-up shop, expanding its location and offerings in October at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West. Taliesin West is home to the School of Architecture at

Taliesin and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. The new pop-up shop location offers signature handcrafted recipes, such as London Fog, Caramel Cape, Black Rose and Swiss Ivory. The signature drink recipes are comparable to lattes, mochas and other gourmet coffee beverages, but made with the option to choose signature shots of concentrated tea or Dapper & Wise espresso shots, a specialty coffee roaster based in Portland, Oregon. Teaspressa is a pioneer in gourmet tea preparation, handcrafting a hybrid beverage that combines the best of both the coffee and tea worlds. Its signature tea blends are created using a patented tea concentration technology developed by the company’s founder, Allison DeVane. The tea blends are loose leaf and prepared like espresso shots, resulting in gourmet tea lattes and coffee-inspired beverages that contain as much caffeine as espresso, but provide consumers the health benefits of traditional tea. Taliesin West, a national historic landmark. The partnership between

Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Teaspressa celebrates the Valley’s past and present innovators. As a part of the Foundation’s dedication to pursuing new innovations and inspiring innovators, Teaspressa will serve Taliesin West’s 100,000 visitors per year as the only on-site refreshment café. Book By Local Authors Wins Prestigious Literary Award

12

12.17

A children’s book written by local authors, “Chloe and the Desert Heroes: A Tale of Adventure in the Sonoran Desert,” was awarded third place out of 54 entries in the 2017 Arizona Literary Award, children’s literature division. “It is a good feeling to be recognized for something that has been a labor of love and has done so much good in promoting conservation and stewardship of the Sonoran Desert,” said Diane L–R: Brenda Olive, Diane Vaszily and Abby Hemingway, members of The Desert Awareness Committee Vaszily, spokesperson for the Scottsdale-based Desert Awareness Committee. The book that has delighted fourth graders in the North Valley for the last two years is the product of a collaboration of local residents affiliated with Desert Awareness, a heritage program of the Foothills Community Foundation. Writing credits include Abby Hemingway, Kathleen Hindle, Brenda Olive, Phyllis Strupp and Vaszily. Original color illustrations were created by Judy Speer and Georgia Taylor. “Chloe and the Desert Heroes” is a comingof-age tale about 12-year-old Chloe who gets lost in the desert when her dog chases a rabbit. She encounters familiar desert animals – the book’s heroes – who help her learn some important lessons about the Sonoran Desert, and, coincidentally, how to deal with school bullies. The book has become a supplement of the fourth grade Arizona Studies curriculum, enhancing understanding of the desert ecosystem through a hands-on desert classroom program and field experience. The Desert Awareness Committee hopes to expand the popular program statewide and nationally. “Chloe and the Desert Heroes” is available as a single copy on Amazon.com. For classroom book sets, including hands-on investigation stations, go to www.azfcf.org/about-desert-awareness.

MAYOR STANTON WRITES…

Explore The Magic Of The Garden This Season

14

12.17

Around the country and in in our own community, more families than ever before are confronting the tragic realities of drug addiction. Because of the nation’s opioid epidemic, drug overdoses are the leading cause of death of Americans under 50 years old, and it’s tearing families apart. Opioids have created the deadliest MAYOR drug crisis in the nation’s history, and City of Phoenix it’s hitting Arizona especially hard. In 602.262.7111 fact, opioid-related deaths in our state www.phoenix.gov are occurring at a rate nearly double compared to last year. In the last four and a half months alone, at least 564 Arizonans have died a suspected opioid-related death. That’s a tragedy, and a public health crisis. This is a crisis that didn’t have to happen – and it’s a direct result of how drug companies engaged in fraudulent marketing to minimize the risks associated with opioids, including their highly addictive nature. As a result, when many fathers, mothers, sons and daughters were prescribed what seemed like safe prescription painkillers after a car accident or minor surgery, they were put not on a road to recovery, but on a path to addition. For many drug companies, profits came before people. The burden placed on taxpayers has been immense. The White House Council of Economic Advisers estimates that the cost of the opioid crisis was $504 billion in 2015 alone – and the crisis is getting worse. The strain in Phoenix is real too. Overdoses are so common that every Phoenix Fire Department engine and rescue vehicle carries doses of naloxone, an opioid antidote – and overdoses that require an ambulance trip are happening more frequently than ever before. Police detectives and patrol officers experience additional demands in response to opioidrelated calls, and taxpayers are paying additional jail costs. The crisis is creating new threats to our neighborhoods and even contributing to the City’s homelessness challenges. Phoenix is taking action. Earlier this month, the City Council approved a plan put forward by myself and Councilwomen Thelda Williams and Debra Stark to take legal action against the drug companies and distributors who created this crisis. They must be held accountable. Not only do we have a moral obligation to act, but I believe that the resources recovered from this action can better equip first responders and neighborhoods with the tools they need to respond to the crisis, as well as help those suffering from addiction. Although many cities across the country are taking this battle to court, Phoenix is the first in Arizona, and I’m hopeful that our approach will encourage others to take action as well. We can’t solve this crisis alone – but if we work together, we can turn the tide and give Arizona families confronting this epidemic the help they need.

Horses Help Introduces New Program For Military & First Responders This fall, Horses Help launched a new program, Operation Unbridled, for those who are past or present military, police or fire personnel. Operation Unbridled offers a time of camaraderie where participants can learn and hone the art of horsemanship. PATH International-certified instructors and well-trained horses will provide a unique outdoor equine related activity that is presented in a welcoming and relaxed environment. Participants in Operation Unbridled may choose to attend for reasons including discovering a new hobby, decompressing from the job or reconnecting with horse-related activities. Operation Unbridled is a groundwork only program that focuses on teaching safe, quality horse handling skills ranging from grooming, leading through trail course obstacles, to desensitizing horses to various objects. As horses are innately responsive to body language and tone of voice, participants will also practice verbal and non-verbal communication with their equine team member. For several years, Horses Help has offered a program geared towards the military community, but as the military and first responder communities are often closely intertwined, the facility has expanded services to now offer Operation Unbridled. Horses Help, founded in 1987, has been a leader in providing safe, quality Equine Assisted Learning and Activities and is a PATH International Premier Accredited Center. Operation Unbridled is a weekly program offered at a very minimal cost to participants thanks to financial support from the community. Wakefield, BDO, Goldwater Bank and more. Combined with new amenities such as the state-of-the-art E-Center, six on-site restaurants, world-class shopping, luxury high-rise living, six hotels and 36 golf holes all within one mile, The Esplanade is once again influencing the Camelback Corridor’s recent renaissance. The Esplanade provides office and retail tenants with highly flexible, creative-friendly layouts and workspaces. Designed by Gensler & Associates, with landscaping design by SWA, this yearlong renovation stripped away decades of dated design details to create a clean, modern and alluring mixed-use workplace environment. Highlights include replacing the steeple-like shade structures with

sleek, low-slung shade sails that blend seamlessly with the surrounding high-rises, while also providing more effective sun protection. The plaza was also transformed thanks to modern desert landscaping and stylish outdoor seating, while all entryways, signage and the secured underground parking were all reconfigured for better, more intuitive way finding. All common areas, including each building’s lobby, are being upgraded with modern yet timeless finishes and furnishings, while all exterior lighting has been updated with eco-friendly LED lighting. Today, The Esplanade is nearing 80 percent occupancy thanks to 200,000 square feet of new leasing, as well as an additional 100,000 square feet of renewals and expansions, in 2016 alone.

Fountain Hills Theater Presents Holiday Classic & More

20

12.17

Fountain Hills Theater (FHT) has taken the spirit of the season, wrapped it in beautiful original melodies and tied it with all the holiday magic and wonder of childhood. Based on the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol tells the tale of curmudgeonly miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future hoping to change his destiny and save his soul. Follow Scrooge through a series of strange and magical journeys, where he ultimately discovers the true spirit of the holiday season. This delightful musical, an original adaptation, is written by FHT artistic director Peter J. Hill, with music and lyrics by Hill and Jay Melberg. A Christmas Carol: The Musical runs November 30 – December 24 on even dates. Set in a theatre, Inspecting Carol deals with a regional theatre company that is rehearsing its annual production of A Christmas Carol, its cash cow, when it gets news of the impending arrival of an

inspector from the National Endowment for the Arts to review their work. The actor playing Tiny Tim gets a better offer and leaves the production in the lurch. When

an aspiring actor of somewhat questionable talent arrives to audition, he is mistaken for the inspector and given the part of the child actor. The company goes on to stage an accident filled, error laden production of their play. Inspecting Carol runs December 1–23 on odd dates. FHT Youth Theater reprises it’s holiday hit, Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! – this time with a brand new cast. Junie B. Jones, first-grader, is super-excited about the upcoming Holiday SingAlong and Secret Santa gift exchange at her school. Too bad tattletale May keeps ruining all of Junie B.’s fun. So, when Junie B. draws May’s name for Secret Santa, she comes up with the perfect plan to teach her nemesis a lesson. But will the Christmas spirit of peace and goodwill interfere before she can give you-know-who what she deserves? Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! runs December 1–17. Ready For Their Forever Homes

Mojo, Charlie and Faith, along with other rescues, live at Pal’s Inn Pet Resort in Fountain Hills. They were rescued by Rescue Pals, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and local dog rescue/adoption organization. Even though they are well taken care of, they are very tired of living in a kennel. Mojo, approximately five years old, is an American Bulldog. He is affectionate and smart. He does well with adults, kids and other dogs. He loves his daily walks. Charlie is a mixed breed sweetie and about three years old. He loves to walk and listens very well. He would make a wonderful addition to any family. Each of these dogs would do best in a home with a nice back yard and a doggy door. Mojo and Charlie, along with their other canine buddies (big and small) who also live at Pal’s Inn, would sure love to meet you if you think you have room in your heart and your home for a loving four-legged friend. Twenty-Three Days Of Seasonal Celebrations

his year, the Town of Carefree is building upon the decade-long tradition of the Carefree Christmas Festival – and expanding the holiday season, while also furthering community and business involvement. Preserving the sense of community for locals while also showcasing all the color and beauty of Carefree to new visitors will be the focal point of the expanded Christmas in Carefree celebration. The seasonal celebration is set to run from December 1 through 23, and will include highlights of an official tree lighting at the iconic Carefree Sundial, Carefree Snow Village (featuring real snow), an open-air Christmas Market, concerts, a comedy show, arts and crafts, gingerbread build-off, Luminaria Tribute in the Garden, and a new daytime community parade by the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few. “The expanded footprint will allow for even more visitors to enjoy the festivities over an extended period,” said Carefree Mayor Les Peterson. “This will complement typical business hours and also provide a platform for nonprofits from all over the desert foothills area to engage with the community and showcase their cause.” Evenings in the enchanting, four-acre Carefree Desert Gardens will be adorned with a professional holiday light display. Meanwhile, the daytime hours will be better positioned for the community parade December 9 – while also allowing for more community involvement, reduced safety risks and enhanced exposure of Carefree’s pedestrian-friendly business district. There will also be special appearances by Beatle Tribute Band Marmalade Skies, singer-songwriter Ryan Sims and comedian-actor Jill Kimmel, who is the younger sister of the late-night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel will pay tribute to veterans and first responders by performing a comedy show just for them. Admission will be an unwrapped toy for the annual toy drive, which supports children of a family selected by the Foothills Food Bank. All toys will be delivered by the Carefree Rural Metro Fire Department. The Cave Creek Unified School District will also include performances from the Cactus Shadows High School Jazz Band as well as various elementary and middle school choirs in addition to the bell ringers and choir from the local Presbyterian church. It all adds up to an enchanting expansion of the Carefree Christmas Festival – and the sign of even more exceptional things to come. “We anticipate this event becoming one of the most-attended and revered holiday traditions in the Northeast Valley,” said Peterson. “We look forward to seeing it grow and evolve, year after year.” For more information, visit www.christmasincarefree.com.

MAYOR PETERSON WRITES... Carefree At The Crossroads Of The Northeast Valley By Mayor Les Peterson

Serving the Community Since 2002

There are a limited number of streets serving the northeast quadrant of the metropolitan area that are not interrupted by the nearby mountainous terrain. Several of the roads of regional significance bisect the Town of Carefree – Carefree Highway, Scottsdale Road (Tom Darlington), MAYOR Pima Road and Cave Creek Roads. Town of Carefree The majority of travel along these routes is generated 480.488.3686 from daily commuters living in nearby communities and www.carefree.org regularly traveling to work and school. This traffic will continue to increase in the future as growth in these adjacent communities continues. The Town of Carefree has little impact or control over this future external growth; however, Carefree’s public streets will continue to absorb the impacts.

Jill Kimmel To Perform Standup During Christmas in Carefree The holiday season means a lot of things to a lot of people. Thanks to Jill Kimmel, there’s one thing the expanded Christmas in Carefree (www.christmasincarefree.com) promises to be: filled with laughter. Last December, the proud Arizona resident, and sister of popular late-night television show host Jimmy Kimmel, was performing on her fifth tour with Armed Forces Entertainment, spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve with American troops stationed overseas. This holiday season, Jill will be in Carefree, performing standup Friday, December 8, 4–5:15pm, in the Carefree Desert Garden’s Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. Kimmel’s entertaining set will be part of an evening in support of the Foothills Food Bank (www.foothillsfoodbank.com) supported by U.S. Armed Forces, veterans and first responders. Immediately following her performance, the Main Event Band will be playing live music honoring all visitors with a concert until 8pm. All in attendance are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to families that have been identified by the Foothills Food Bank. In partnership with Rural Metro Fire Fighters in Carefree, the toys will be delivered to the families before Christmas. Kimmel’s comedy set will open with fellow performer Gregory Freiler. For additional information about Kimmel, visit www.jillkimmel.com. Go to page 34 for a Christmas in Carefree Calendar of Events!

Luminaria Tribute Bags Benefit Youth Achievement

It is critical to note that the vast majority (over 98 percent) of the Town is and will remain residential. However, adjacent to the intersections of these regional streets are a few remaining undeveloped properties. These undeveloped properties are less desirable for low-density, spacious homes that define the community. Therefore, alternative land uses that complement this regional traffic patterns should be considered to provide these commuters/consumers the opportunity to stop within the community and enjoy quality goods/products. As a result, the town’s sales tax-centric revenue stream will be enhanced so the Town can continue to provide its citizens Town services such as fire, police, public works and community development services without the need for a town-specific property tax like many nearby communities. Indeed, change is inevitable. The challenge is to address and respond to anticipated changes with appropriate responses. We believe that limited increases in commercial zoning along these major traffic arteries maintains the rural character of Carefree while at the same time preparing Carefree to adapt and thrive in the future as well.

The Town of Carefree is partnering with the Desert Foothills YMCA to help support teen leadership programs by selling luminaria bags for $10. Purchasers will decorate their bags to celebrate a cherished memory or the life of a loved one and the decorated bags will be displayed and lit in the Carefree Desert Gardens December 15–24. Part of the proceeds will go to the Teen Leaders program at the YMCA, which provides opportunities for youth to realize who they are and what they are capable of achieving through academic enrichment, confidence building, goal setting and much more. For additional information, contact Desert Foothills YMCA at 480.596.9622 or go online at www. christmasincarefree.com.

Foothills Academy College Preparatory: Breaking Down Classroom Walls

“Have you ever seen a tomato do this? What do you suppose is creating this phenomenon?” As the students gaze in awe, one small voice suggests the possibility of an alien tomato, while another makes a connection to previous lessons about the essential elements that a plant needs to grow. And this is just the beginning. It is these curious questions that light the spark for students to be creative, communicate effectively, collaborate with their peers and think critically about what it is they are investigating. “At Foothills Academy College Preparatory, we have taken this one step further: we are on a mission to break down classroom walls,” says Dr. Jane White, principal at Foothills Academy. “Quite literally, the simple questions above have blossomed into a fully functioning outdoor classroom garden – designed, planted and cared for by Foothills Academy students and the broader school community. With many gracious thanks to the continued support of Kiwanis Club of Carefree, Foothills Academy College Preparatory students in grades K–9 are actively engaged in the school’s STEAM (integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program.” Most recently, Kiwanis Club of Carefree granted Foothills Academy $30,000 to further expand Foothills Academy’s STEAM offerings. Led by Mary Beth Abbey, M.Ed., Foothills Academy’s STEAM director, Kiwanis grant funds are utilized to purchase the hands-on, minds-on resources to support our STEAM curriculum, designed to purposefully integrate STEM with industry training standards.

“This is our take on adding the ‘A’ in STEAM,” says Dr. White. “It is the ‘human element’.” This includes development of skills in problem solving and team building. Students are encouraged to look inward, identifying individual strengths, and outward to capitalize on the strengths of others in order to arrive at more effective solutions. How better to arrive at understanding the “human element” than to study a culture far different from one’s own. Imagine having the opportunity to creatively design and 3D-print a solar-powered light source, in collaboration with someone on the other side of the globe. Students at Foothills Academy College Preparatory are experiencing just that. The students have been paired one-to-one with students from schools across the globe. Through project based learning, which combines guided discussion, hands-on activities and interactive media, students are identifying an issue and applying design thinking to solve real-world problems. The result is meaningful, global collaboration and an enhanced understanding of the world; genuine global competency. Foothills Academy College Prep is grateful for the financial support and interest Kiwanis has demonstrated in its STEAM program. A robust program has been established that continues to engage students and teachers’ curiosity and imagination. For more information about the STEAM program, as well as many other Foothills Academy kindergarten through 12th grade programs, call 480.488.5583, or visit www. foothillsacademy.com.

SOUL CONNECTION

Black Mountain Centers Our Communities Black Mountain is the majestic centerpiece of our Carefree and Cave Creek communities. Our homes and businesses are organized around the multi-colored mountain and it looks down on us as we go about our lives. We can drive, bike, run or walk the nine miles around its base looking at ALLEN NOHRE its blackness from Cave Creek Road Writer on the west and north that turns green with rains in the spring. From Tom Darlington on the east, and Carefree Highway on the south, the giant brown boulders precariously dot the side of the mountain as if placed by a creator playing with stones. Have you ever regarded Black Mountain as sacred? There are mountains that are just mountains and there are mountains that are regarded as special. The highest mountain peak in Greece is Mount Olympus, believed to be the home of the Greek gods and of the Hellenistic world. Mount Sinai, where Moses ascended to receive the Ten Commandments from God, is a sacred mountain. The volcanic Mount Etna in Italy is believed to be the home of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. When a place in nature is special to us, we often take measures to protect and preserve it. The summit of Black Mountain is a 250-acre preserve transferred in 1973 from the Bureau of Land Management to the Maricopa County Parks Department. The Desert Foothills Land Trust has also

preserved two five-acre parcels near the summit. If you are in great physical shape, you can hike to the peak on a rugged trail that begins at School House Road in Downtown Cave Creek. The trail is not groomed and in some places it is very steep with jagged rocks. I’ve hiked it and enjoyed looking down on our house at the base of the mountain. My preferred way of enjoying Black Mountain is gazing up at him from our patio late in the evening and saluting his majesty with a glass of port. Black Mountain is special – maybe even sacred. Allen Nohre lives in Carefree with his wife, Kathie. He is a writer at Terros and can be reached at anohre@cox.net.

Cactus Shadows Announces New Equestrian Club Horsemanship is a hot topic in the Cave Creek Unified School District, and now, Cactus Shadows High School has launched an Equestrian Club to fuel the interest. Tina Steensen-Bech, the club’s sponsor, has many members with varying backgrounds in horsemanship. Activities planned for this year include volunteer work at local stables and rescues, visits to an equine hospital and spectating at WestWorld equestrian events. Guest speakers will include veterinarians and representatives from colleges and universities with equine programs and equestrian teams. Local breeders, horse therapy trainers, polo players and jockeys will also be visiting the club’s membership. Principal Steve Bebee said, “Over the last nine years, I have had many conversations with our students who ride competitively. It is really cool that Cactus Shadows will now have a club that will bond students who love to ride horses together at school.” The Equestrian Club’s mission is to educate members about horse care, health and safety, equestrian education opportunities and careers and current part-time jobs in the community, while having fun discussing equestrian topics and visiting shows together. “Cactus Shadows is an ideal place for an equestrian club. We have so many students who take part in equestrian events at all levels and styles that it just seems natural for these students to have this venue. I commend our students and Ms. Steensen-Beck who have been working hard to start the Equestrian Club,” said Jim Swetter, assistant principal at Cactus Shadows. MAYOR BUNCH WRITES… By Mayor Ernie Bunch

The spirit of giving and community partnership is flourishing at the Desert Foothills Library, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community-funded library, with a new donor rewards program supported by local area business partners. Individual donors who contribute $40, and families $70, or more annually to the Library will receive a rewards card giving the holder a 10 percent discount on goods and services at participating restaurants and other business. Encouraging the reciprocity of giving and receiving, this new program incentivizes purchasing from local merchants who support the library while increasing sales and new customers. Providing a way to thank donors and community partners, the program also helps increase minimum level donations for the Library, which is almost entirely dependent upon contributions. It is easy to make a tax-deductible donation and get a rewards card. Stop in at the Library, 38443 North Schoolhouse Road in Cave Creek, or go online to www.dfla.org. For additional information, call 480.488.2286.

Foothills Christmas Pageant Celebrates The Season

Travel Back In Time (Or Around Cave Creek) On A Stagecoach Dan Harris, owner of D & K Wagon Rides, has come to historic Cave Creek to set the stage for a “trip back in time.” The stagecoach is slung on leather through braces, which creates a sooth motion that needs to be experienced to understand. “If you have never ridden in a stagecoach, there is no other ride like it,” says Harris. His top priority is taking care of the horses, shires Fiona and Frisco and Clydesdales Jack and Ace. But he also built the stagecoach and is a farrier and wheelwright. Harris provides services to the public as well as special events and weddings. Harris has been running his stagecoach in Durango from Memorial Day through October for about five years. Now, Harris and his stagecoach will carry Cave Creek visitors and residents through town this winter and spring. The stagecoach runs Wednesday through Sunday, 1–5pm, from Harold’s Corral to Frontier Town. The cost for adults to ride is $10 one-way; children 6–12, $5 (plus, kids can sit on top of the stagecoach and ride shotgun). Children 5 and under ride for free. Learn more about D & K Wagon Rides on the company’s Facebook page or at www.dkwagonrides.com.

A traditional community event started by the Cave Creek 4-H Club in 1952, as a re-enactment of the Christmas story showcasing the 4-H Club members’ animals, will celebrate its 65th annual performance. The Foothills Christmas Pageant takes place at 7pm Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3, at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area in Cave Creek. Area residents perform in the choir and make up the cast. Volunteers handle all aspects of the pageant, from ground prep, sound tech and sets, to luminaria placement and critter coordination. “We are very proud to keep this tradition going, which is truly a classic,” says Toby Payne, longtime organizer of the Pageant. “You may know the story, but you haven’t experienced it like this. Come, reflect and enjoy. It’s a joy for people of all ages. No one should miss it.” Majestic-voiced narrator Robert Hutson presides over the non-denominational Christmas story with beautiful musical accompaniment provided by the Pageant choir

conducted by Steve Norris. Cactus Shadows Shadowbox Players, directed by Andrew Cupo, enact the roles of Mary, Joseph, Angel, Townspeople and Shepherds. The Three Kings make their dramatic entrance on horseback. Other animals and their owners participate as they wish. Because there is no built-in seating, bring a blanket to sit up-close on the ground or a portable chair. Wear warm clothes and walking shoes. A flashlight is useful because the primary lighting for Spur Cross Ranch is starlight. Admission and parking are free. “There wouldn’t be a Pageant without the volunteer crews who set everything up and help run the event,” said Payne. “We need as many people as possible to participate and keep this 65-year tradition alive.” Anyone interested in volunteering or requiring additional information should contact Payne at 480.544.2290. Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area is located at 44000 North Spur Cross Road in Cave Creek. For details, visit www.foothillschristmaspageant.com.

“If We Make It Through December.” A Merle Haggard classic about a man who loses his job and is looking forward to a brighter future from the depths of his misfortune. One of the lines is, “I don’t mean to hate December, it’s meant to be a happy time of year.” A very hectic month for those who procrastinate; but up in Cave Creek it’s mostly fun. MAYOR We’ve got a lot going on with just our everyday Town of Cave Creek business, especially if you enjoy a great meal. Those 480.488.1400 winter visitors certainly deserve a tour through our town. www.cavecreek.org The Christmas Pageant will be held again this year on the 2nd and 3rd at 7pm at the Phoenix Mine Site. Just take Spur Cross Road north until you get there. I have photographs of this event from the 1950s – it’s the story of Christmas. For the rest of the month, it’s our normal hopping community. Live music, dancing, bull riding and other attractions. New this year is Ollie’s Trolley making a loop through town and up into Carefree on the weekends. For something really special, there is now a horsedrawn stagecoach for a true Western experience! Enjoy the month, enjoy family and the time we get to spend together. Most of all there’s really no need to hate December! Merry Christmas!

Chicago was introduced to the hot dog in 1893. Today, the famed Vienna Beef hot dog has been rejuvenated and introduced to Cave Creek, and the northern foothill communities that surround it, in the form of Mike’s Chicago Dogs. Mike Harjung says his business specializes in 100 percent Vienna Beef hot dogs. “As a true Chicagoan would say, ‘drag it through the garden,’” says Harjung. “Each dog is nestled in a poppy seed bun and topped with mustard, relish, tomatoes, onion, sport peppers, a dill pickle spear and a dash of celery salt on top for a true Chicago Dog experience.” A native Chicagoan, Harjung moved his family to Cave Creek in 2005. Although Cave Creek is now his home, the business entrepreneur says Chicago remains dear to his heart and is where most of his family lives today. Harjung says Mike’s Chicago Dogs, which now has a regular presence at the American Legion Post 34 and the Roadhouse, is also available for private parties, special events and onsite customer meals. Mike’s Chicago Dogs, which has been named the “Best New Hog Dog Cart in Arizona,” can be found at a variety of venues in Cave Creek, Carefree, North Phoenix and North Scottsdale throughout the year. Harjung certainly knows Chicago-style dogs like no other as he boasts a degree from Vienna Hot Dog University. transatlantic voyage, all three traveled through uncharted lands and found themselves beset by raiders, marauding bears, starvation and scurvy. Along the way, the Friars made invaluable notes on indigenous peoples, flora and fauna, and prominent 18th Century figures. Their adventures led them across the highlands of Mexico, the deserts of the American Southwest and coastal California. “These three men opened up a broader swath and a more important swath of the North American continent than Lewis and Clark did,” notes Kittle. Autographed copies of Franciscan Frontiersmen will be available for purchase at the event. The event is free for Museum members and $5 for non-members at the door. The Sonoran Arts League presents its second annual Small Works Fine Art and Holiday Show, featuring works of art by Arizona artists, both regionally and nationally known, December 3–January 7. Small Works is a juried show that includes affordable, exceptional paintings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces in a wide variety of themes. While sizes vary, each artist was asked to create works close to a 12” x 12” (not including frame/mat) configuration. One of the League’s most popular exhibits, this is a favorite of many patrons due to the the smaller scale and affordability of the art. The exhibition officially opens to the general public on December 3 and continues through January 7, 2018. The show will kick off the season with a free Artists’ Reception Gala December 1 at the Sonoran Arts League. During the Gala, attendees will be asked to participate in the “People’s Choice Award” and vote for their favorite piece of artwork in the show. A prize of $500 will be awarded during the gala to the winning artist. Open to the public, seasoned collectors, art enthusiasts and holiday shoppers, the Small Works show hours are 10am–5pm, Monday through Saturday and 1–4pm Sundays at the Sonoran Arts League Center for the Arts. Admission is free. In addition to the Small Works show, the Arts League will hold its Holiday Artisan Market December 15–17. Visitors can get some holiday shopping in while browsing unique, original art and handmade holiday gifts created by League artists. The Holiday Artisan Market will be held 10am–5pm at the Sonoran Arts League Center for the Arts, 7100 East Cave Creek Road, Suite 144, in Cave Creek’s Stagecoach Village. Roastery of Cave Creek Celebrates Twenty Years Led by Arizona coffee pioneer David Anderson and his wife Alison, The Roastery of Cave Creek (ROC2), celebrated its 20th anniversary in November, while continuing expansion by increasing roasting capacity by nearly 40 percent. “It’s a milestone to be at 20 years and among the leading Arizona coffee producers,” said Anderson. “We’re honored to be working with some of the best chefs and establishments in the ever-expanding Arizona culinary scene, and we have some exciting plans ahead as we continue to grow.” It started in 1997 with a small 3-kilo roaster in the back of Anderson’s Cave Creek coffee shop. “I had enough mad scientist in me to know I wanted to roast my own beans and control the taste and freshness,” said Anderson. Since then, he has grown a massive wholesale operation featuring more than 20 proprietary blends and single origin coffees. Nitro and Cold Brew were developed in 2015 in partnership with Whole Foods. “We took a year to really dial in the Nitro and Cold Brew programming, but it was worth it, and it’s arguably the best in the Valley – many even say the best they’ve ever tasted,” said Anderson. In addition to Whole Foods, customers range from small cafes to the state’s largest resorts who provide ROC2 coffee to their guests; and ROC2 also serves as a coffee consultation business that not only sells equipment but also helps restaurants and cafes develop their coffee programming, menus, and store design. In November, Anderson continued ROC2’s expansion by increasing its roasting capacity to more than 850,000 pounds per year, a 35–40 percent increase, by adding a new 25-kilo UG Retro 22 roaster. “Presently there are only about

five of these machines in the U.S. and we are thrilled to have one,” said Anderson. ROC2 is served at many of the Valley’s favorite restaurants: Matt’s Big Breakfast, Tarbell’s, Rancho Pinot, FnB, Pizzeria Bianco, Lon’s at the Hermosa and Richardson’s, to name a few – and there are many new ventures are on the horizon. While ROC2 does not have a retail location, the Cave Creek roastery (located at 7003 East Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek) offers fresh roasted beans from “The Box,” a steel cabinet stocked with their coffees available on a grab-n-go basis on the honor system. The box is located just outside the roastery, and there is a mail slot to leave payments with a karma sign above the door. “Locals seem to like it and we have many people who drive from around the Valley and bring out-of-town guests to visit The Box. Every now and then we get I.O.U.’s written on a piece of paper – some are pretty funny – but people always seem to come back and pay. If you give people the opportunity to do the right thing, they generally will.” For more information or to shop ROC2’s coffee blends, visit www.roc2. coffee or call 480.488.6060.

Be A Living Christmas Letter PASTOR PAUL WITKOP Light of the Desert Lutheran Church

Paul Witkop is Pastor of Light of the Desert Lutheran Church in Cave Creek. Call 480.563.5500 or e-mail paulw@lightofthedesert.org.

National Radio Host Premiers Children’s Book For Charity Rich Berra, nationally syndicated radio host of iHeart Media’s Johnjay and Rich Show, debuts The Tale of Christmas Steve, a hilarious and heartwarming holiday children’s book. The whimsical story about a Christmas elf is a timely reminder that everyone has something unique to offer – no matter the outside package. “I wanted to share a story that I used to tell my kids,” said Berra. “When I started writing, it started rhyming; then Christmas Steve took on a life of his own. The magic of Christmas is alive – and I hope people feel it.” Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Berra has been in radio since he was 14. He co-founded the #LoveUp Foundation, which focuses on enriching the lives of children in the foster care system and supporting children and families in need. The Tale of Christmas Steve is his first book. Illustrated by Design Art Studio and published by Branded Pros, the 32-page hardcover book is available for purchase at www.christmassteve.org and on Amazon. Proceeds benefit the Johnjay and Rich Christmas Wish program, a division of #LoveUp, which provides food, clothing, comfort and holiday presents to those in need.

Remembered Well Helps Preserve Family Histories Everyone has a story to tell. No one has lived the same life nor experienced the same experiences. Memories and experiences are a part of one’s personal legacy. But what about preserving them? Remembered Well founder Michele Trent launched a family and personal history business after recording her own father at the end of his battle with cancer. Hearing her dad, long after he has passed away, is an incredibly precious gift. Trent was so passionate about the result that she left her 25-year career to start Remembered Well and help other families preserve their history. Just imagine being able to hear a grandmother or great-grandfather or any relatives telling their stories, in their own words and in their own voice. Oral histories are unique in that they are highly personal works of art. Yet, they are simple and enjoyable to create. With the guidance of a personal historian like Trent, one’s story, or that of a loved one, can be captured in only a few sit-down conversations. The final product is a professional, digitally preserved, recording of a story. Personal history packages are a great gift idea. Not only are they a gift to the recipient, they are also a gift for the entire family for generations. Learn more about personal history projects and listen to some excerpts from client stories by visiting www.rememberedwell.com.

Do you send out Christmas letters to your friends and family? They are a great way to reconnect with people we do not see regularly and to share news and greetings. How about trying something different this year, or at least adding to your letter writing tradition? How about bringing your letters to life? Rather than just sending letters on paper, how about sending a letter that shows your love and concern for others…in person? In II Corinthians 3:3, the apostle Paul tells his readers: You are letter from Christ…not written pen and ink but with the Spirit of the living God. Do you bring encouragement or discouragement to others in your daily connecting with others? This Christmas, I want to challenge you to go one step further. Instead of simply writing a letter, be a living Christmas letter from Christ. Choose three people or families who you know could really use encouragement and make a special pre-Christmas visit to their homes. Think about it. Who do you know that is especially lonely, sorrowful, confined to their home, recuperating from surgery, new to your neighborhood, jobless or any other condition where a visit from your family and you would be a highlight for the whole season? The greatest and most appreciated gift is the investment of your love and time. When God wanted to send the most important message to the world, He didn’t write it in the clouds or send it with a huge bang. God sent a person, a living letter. God sent Jesus to live with us and to love us. May you receive the message that our living God wants to send you this Christmas. You matter very much to God. He loves you and has a plan for your life that is greater than anything you can imagine. Please open this living letter and allow your heart to be changed this Christmas.

Red Cross Offers Three Ways To Make Saving Lives Easier Than Ever The holidays are known for the giving spirit and a hectic pace. This holiday season, the American Red Cross is sharing three ways to give the gift of life in less time. At this time of year, many regular blood and platelet donors delay giving due to busy schedules – but the need for blood remains. To help donors fit in a donation, the Red Cross offers three easy ways to make helping save lives faster and more convenient: • RapidPass: Donors can complete their pre-donation reading and health history questions online to save about 15 minutes at their donation. In September, RapidPass became available on mobile devices, giving donors the ability to complete their RapidPass from a smartphone, tablet or computer. • Blood Donor App: Through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, users can find local blood drives and donation centers, schedule an appointment, receive appointment reminders and keep track of total blood donations – all from the palm of their hand.

• Online appointment scheduling: Donors can conveniently schedule an appointment and find tips for a successful blood or platelet donation at redcrossblood.org. “The Red Cross is thankful for the generosity of donors who help keep hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood products, but we know that the holiday activities that we cherish most can make it difficult for many regular donors to find a moment to donate this time of year,” said Christine Welch, communications manager, Red Cross Arizona Blood Services Region. “We hope technologies like online appointment scheduling, the Blood Donor App and RapidPass will make it a little easier for donors to give more life for patients this holiday season.” Patients don’t get a holiday break from needing lifesaving transfusions, and all blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply is available. Appointments can be made by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org or calling 800.733.2767. To learn more about RapidPass, visit redcrossblood.org/rapidpass and follow the instructions on the site.

Local Baker Whips Up ‘Spirited’ Cupcakes

52

12.17

What happens when craft cocktails and handcrafted cupcakes are combined? Phoenix’s tastiest new boutique bakery, High Spirited Cupcakes. Led by Valley native and self-taught baker Lauren Klein and her partner, Heather Shoemaker, High Spirited Cupcakes tempts with 25 deliciously decadent, and wildly inventive, cupcake varieties, such as the bourbon-spiked Sinabun or the Hole Molé made with mezcal-infused chocolate molé cake. Always made-to-order, High Spirited Cupcakes also whips up custom cupcakes for any occasion or flavor profile, and even offers kid-friendly non-alcoholic versions. A Phoenix native, Klein learned to bake alongside her mother and grandmother and says that baking is her therapy. But it wasn’t until she graduated from Northern Arizona University with a theater degree that Klein realized cooking could be a career. “I still love theater,” she says, “but I wasn’t ready to relocate to L.A. or New York, and I’d always dreamed of opening my own bakery.” Although Klein had been experimenting with incorporating alcohol into her desserts recipes for years, it wasn’t until she met her longtime boyfriend Ross Simon, owner of Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour, that she got serious about spiking her cupcakes with premium liquors, liqueurs and other craft cocktail staples. Today, High Spirited Cupcakes offers dozens of delightful varieties such as Rosé All Day (rosé cake filled with strawberry curd and finished off with a fragrant rose European meringue buttercream), and Breakfast of Champions (Crown Royal maple cake with a maple whiskey pastry cream filling, Don’t Go Bacon My Heart topped with a peanut butter European buttercream and finished with candied bacon and chocolate eggs). Operating out of a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen in the heart of Downtown Phoenix, High Spirited Cupcakes are available for delivery Valley-wide, as well as curbside pickup at the Residence Inn/Courtyard Phoenix Downtown, at The Bistro inside the Residence Inn (non-alcoholic only) and at Bitter & Twisted (three different rotating flavors). High Spirited Cupcakes cost $48 per dozen (one flavor per dozen), and orders must be made 72-hours in advance. For more information or to order, visit www. highspiritedcupcakes.com.

Scottsdale Sushi Shop: Focus On Fresh – Family-Driven Dive into a dining experience overflowing with fresh flavors and flown-in-daily ingredients, all handcrafted by two top Valley chefs and served inside a hidden gem in the heart of Scottsdale. J’s Kaiyo Sushi + Bar not only serves the freshest fish at the sushi bar – even closing on Sundays because there’s no fresh fish delivery on that day – this innovative restaurant also offers an irresistible menu of sharable Mediterraneanand Easterninfluenced dishes. Led by chef Jason McGrath and sushi chef Todd Register, think Moroccan-spiced racks of lamb ribs, or a crab-stuffed and fire-charred avocado rolled in exotic Asian seeds and spices. J’s Kaiyo is also a family-driven (and family-friendly) affair. Named after owner Peji Malihi’s son (and chef Jason McGrath’s nephew), Jayden – J for short, this casual and welcoming space offers a kid’s menu. Meanwhile, adults will love the extensive menu of Japanese sake, craft cocktails and fine wines and beers. Importing the best of Japan’s communal izakaya drinking culture to Scottsdale, diners can share bottles of unique sake flavors or toast with handcrafted cocktails customized to complement the flavor profiles of the dining menu. At J’s Kaiyo, the quality of ingredients is what makes the difference, says both chef Register (formerly of Stingray, RA and Roka Akor) and chef McGrath, who was practically raised in the kitchen by his father and James Beard Awardwinning chef Robert McGrath. This includes fish delivered and devoured every single day to ensure the highest quality and flavor. “The focus is always on keeping the dishes fresh, clean, and simple,” McGrath says. “The only thing you’ll find in our freezers is our mochi ice cream.” As Malihi likes to say, “the roll speaks for itself,” there is no need for heavy sauces, creams or batters to give their sushi mouthwatering flavor. “It’s all about sharing creative, quality food with the community,” McGrath says. J’s Kaiyo, located at 4412 North Miller Road, is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday and dinner on Saturday, plus weekday happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30pm. For information, call 480.427.2526 or visit www.jskaiyo.com.

Cactus Shadows Student Wins ‘High School Heisman’ Last month, Dr. Steve Bebee, principal of Cactus Shadows High School, congratulated Tayler Markland for being named the school winner of Wendy’s High School Heisman. There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example – in the classroom, on the field and within the community.

To contact Dr. Burdick, call 480.575.2000. For more information on the Cave Creek Unified School District, visit www.ccusd93.org.

Hubbard Sports Camp During Winter Break For families looking to keep children happy, active and “not bored” during the long winter break from school, Hubbard Sports Camp will offer a Winter Sports Camp for children, ages 4 to 13, at Thunderbird Academy in Scottsdale. Children will get to learn and play basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, archery, field sports and a variety of indoor and outdoor games. The camp is offered in full-day and half-day options. Camp dates are December 27–29 and January 2–5. Parents may choose one or more days for their child to attend. There is a full-day option from 8:30am to 3:30pm and a half-day option from 8:30am to noon. The cost is $50, full-day; $35, half-day. Doors open at 8am. Extended care is also available for $15 per child from 3:45pm to 6pm. Full-day campers must bring their own self-cooled lunches. Children do not have to be skilled athletes to have a great time at Hubbard Sports Camp. Some campers have never tried many of the sports and activities that the staff introduces them to. However, the campers who are skilled athletes are challenged and motivated by the highly-qualified and dedicated staff members. The main goal at camp is to make some new friends and learn some new sports. Thunderbird Academy is located at 7410 East Sutton Drive in Scottsdale. For more information or to register, visit www.hubbardsports.com.

“This student is known by her teachers and friends for her commitment to excellence. We are excited and honored that a program like Wendy’s High School Heisman is also recognizing her hard work,” said Dr. Bebee. Since 1994, Wendy’s and the Heisman Trophy Trust have been running the same play to perfection: honoring more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed students. This year, Wendy’s will celebrate the accomplishments of thousands of the best high school seniors, awarding winners in five phases. School winners receive a School Winner certificate and a Wendy’s High School Heisman Patch. State finalists will receive a bronze medal, a Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist patch and a $25 gift card. Cactus Shadows High School is an “A+ School of Excellence” and part of the Cave Creek Unified School District. For additional information, visit www.ccusd93.org.

In the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD), we like to say we are one of the state’s best kept secrets, where our students get a private school education for a public-school cost. Our mission is Inspire Excellence – a belief and mindset that we expect from every student and every employee, no matter what their position. Our vision statement is to inspire students to become learners in order to succeed in a global DR. DEBBI BURDICK lifelong economy and we take that goal very seriously as Superintendent we shape the future through our students. Cave Creek Unified School District Where is CCUSD? Tucked away in the Northeast Valley, we cover 175 square miles of the Sonoran Foothills: west to 40th Street; east to approximately 176th Street; north to Jenny Lin Road; south, a zig-zagged boundary from Jomax to Pima and Pinnacle Peak Road to 136th Street. CCUSD educates students from Cave Creek, Carefree, North Scottsdale, North Phoenix and unincorporated county islands. Interestingly, we no longer have any schools in Cave Creek – our beautiful school campuses are in North Scottsdale and North Phoenix. What is CCUSD? We are a progressive learning district with five elementary schools, one middle and one high school, along with a preschool center where there are educational programs to interest every student. Besides the typical electives, every school teaches world languages, and all are infused with technology to personalized instruction. We are proud to recognize our students and teachers’ academic excellence – No. 1 in Maricopa County for public district schools as measured by AzMERIT and No. 6 in Arizona, for combined math and English Language Arts achievement. What is special about CCUSD? CCUSD students are never a number in our small learning communities. Our educators know their students and pride themselves on providing each and every student an engaging learning experience. Come check out CCUSD! Visit www.ccusd93.org.

Herberger Theater Announces Addition Of Three Resident Companies In mid-November, the Herberger Theater Center (HTC) announced the addition of three resident companies beginning with the 2018–19 season: Arizona Opera, Childsplay Theatre and Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT). They will join current resident companies, Arizona Theatre Company, Center Dance Ensemble and iTheatre Collaborative. These new companies will add to the extraordinary offerings of performing arts, as the Herberger Theater Center fulfills its vision to provide and support significant and relevant experiences and to serve as a premier performance venue, “Where Audience Meets Art.” “We are excited and proud to welcome these wonderful organizations to join the amazing resident companies who call the Herberger Theater Center home,” said Mark Mettes, president and CEO of HTC. “Each of these new companies have a long history of quality productions for audiences throughout the Valley and I can’t wait to see their performances on our stages. Together, the diverse offerings of the resident companies of the Herberger Theater Center will entertain and inspire audiences of all ages, providing more reasons than ever to live, work and play in Downtown Phoenix.” Arizona Opera (www.azopera.org) is entering an exciting new chapter of artistic vibrancy and community engagement. Beginning in the 2018–19 season, the organization will enhance its programming with an innovative new season model. “With this program expansion, we are increasing our commitment to presenting an adventurous, gutsy and compelling repertoire of diverse works to inspire new audiences, while continuing to meaningfully invest in the cherished traditional operas known and loved by so many,” said Joseph Specter, president and general director of Arizona Opera. In addition to Arizona Opera’s Main Stage Series in the winter and spring, Arizona Opera will launch a new fall series entitled Arizona Opera RED. Arizona

Opera RED will be presented in the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix and the Temple of Music and Art in Tucson. The winter/spring Main Stage Season will continue to be presented in Phoenix’s Symphony Hall and at Tucson Music Hall. “Childsplay is very happy to be performing at a more central Valley location and we are a thrilled to be a member of the Herberger Theater Center’s outstanding family of

resident companies,” commented Steve Martin, managing director of Childsplay (www.childsplayaz.org). Looking to expand its brand of Broadway-style musicals to an ever-growing audience in the Valley, ABT (www.azbroadway. org) plans a continued partnership with the Herberger Theater Center – co-presenting a number of blockbuster productions at the Herberger Theater Center in 2018–19. “As founder of Arizona Broadway Theatre, I am thrilled the Herberger Theater Center’s board of directors has accepted ABT as one of its newest resident companies. With our recent success at HTC of A Christmas Carol last December and Disney’s Beauty and The Beast this past summer, we know there is an audience in central Phoenix and the East Valley for ABT’s brand of entertainment,” said Kiel Klaphake, CEO and executive producer of ABT. Opened in 1989 and fully renovated in 2010, the Herberger Theater offers three theater venues, art gallery, plaza and rentable event space for a variety of community uses. Herberger Theater Center is located at in Downtown Phoenix. For information, visit www.herbergertheater.org.

Take A Magical Train Ride To The North Pole

58

12.17

Every winter, the Grand Canyon Railway’s Polar Express comes to life on a journey from the nighttime wilderness of Williams to the enchanted beauty of “the North Pole” – where Santa Claus

and his reindeer are waiting with a keepsake present for every good boy and girl. Guests will be smiling from ear to ear, as they watch children’s faces light up when the train arrives, and enjoy hot

chocolate and chocolate chip cookies while listening to this timeless story. Much like in the book and movie, guests can expect a lively bunch of elves, chefs and other characters to provide constant entertainment. Photo-ops are plentiful as riders are encouraged to sing, dance and act out old fashioned holiday songs and read along to The Polar Express story by Chris Van Allsburg. Fill up on chocolate chip cookies and hot chocolate provided by Santa’s chefs just

before arriving at the North Pole. Upon arrival to Santa’s Village, the train will fill with anticipation as Santa makes his way through the cars, visiting every boy, girl, mom and dad, leaving them with a special gift. Santa will visit each car as the train returns to the Williams Depot. The ride lasts a little over an hour, with the train leaving each night at 5:30pm and 7:30pm. To make a reservation, call 888.848.3511. For information, visit www.thetrain.com.

Artlink Announces New Third Friday Trolley Tour Artlink announced a new complimentary Third Friday Trolley Tour that will operate in addition to its First Friday Tours. With one additional tour each month, art lovers will find it even easier to access Phoenix’s arts districts and destinations. The free Third Friday trolley will circulate between Roosevelt Row and the Historic Grand Avenue Arts Districts, and the Downtown Phoenix core, with periodic stops along the route. Patrons will be invited to hop-on hop-off where they choose, with an invitation to visit galleries and cultural venues such as Modified Arts, eye lounge, {9} The Gallery, the new Sisao at Oasis on Grand or the Herberger Gallery at Arizona Center. Volunteer docents will staff the trolleys, providing information on the night’s arts and culture offerings. The trolleys will operate between 6pm and 9pm each third Friday (effective November 17). Find a map of the new route at https://artlinkphx.org/third-fridays. Each circuit will take approximately 25 minutes to travel it in its entirety. The trolleys, provided by Dunn Transportation, Artlink’s official transportation partner, have been serving First Fridays for several years, with over 6,000 riders hopping aboard last year. “We are encouraged by the growing demand for the arts in Phoenix and are thrilled to work with our district partners and Dunn Transportation to connect patrons to the increasingly popular arts and culture offerings one more night each month,” said Artlink board president Catrina Kahler. “Third Friday has long been considered the more arts-centric version of Phoenix’s Fridays by arts enthusiasts and we look forward to introducing the night to a new audience.” The route is now permanent for all Third Fridays with a similar version scheduled for March Third Friday during Art Detour 30, Artlink’s annual multi-day celebration of the arts’ influence in developing the America’s fifthlargest city. More details about Art Detour 30, March 15–20, will be announced at www.artdetour.com.

unique and enjoyable holiday parade in America,” said Larry Baumann, Parade of Lights chairman. “With the lights on the boats reflected on beautiful San Diego Bay and the downtown skyline as a backdrop, there isn’t a more stunning sight during the holidays.” Sponsored by the Port of San Diego’s Tidelands Activation Program, and designed to bring the dynamic waterfront to life with events that engage the community and inspire visitors, the event is a time-honored tradition brought to the San Diego Bay by the boating community. Beginning at 5:30pm both nights, the two-hour long route travels through some of San Diego’s most treasured waterfront destinations including Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, the Pier at Cesar Chavez Park and the Ferry Landing in Coronado. Boats are judged throughout the parade and are eligible to win prizes. For information, visit www.sdparadeoflights.org.

Do You Treat Yourself Well At Home?

JAMES ROBERTS

BARBARA KAPLAN

Phoenix

Scottsdale Interior Designer

All many of us really want for the holiday gifting season is less aggravation. Here are a few empirical guidelines for you

How do you prefer to live? Do you take the time to treat yourself well at home? Do you do things in your home that make you happy and feel good? Last week, I had a conversation with a client about bringing rituals and ceremony into her home. She had read one of my articles and wanted to bring her “signature” into her environment. To do this she knew she had to better understand herself so that she could customize her personal space. As we talked about doing this she realized that it was about her preferences. It was about her habits and things she likes that gave her comfort and bonded her with her surroundings. Of course, her favorite things are very different from yours and mine.

singletons. No use of the word “gifting.” Ok, but seriously… No matter how much holiday fun you’re having, don’t plan an extended vacation together until you’ve endured a road trip. Oh, wait, you already made that mistake. Let’s start over…

Dog-Eared Review: Gilded Splendor

Read the rest of “Do You Treat Yourself Well At Home?” online now.

MELANIE TIGHE Phoenix Book Enthusiast

For those of you missing the scoundrel, rogue and rascal-filled tales of Kathleen Woodiwiss and Bertrice Smalls, I urge you to pick up a copy of one of Elizabeth Parkers romances. Gilded Splendor by Arizona’s own Parker delivers as only a good-ole bodice ripper can! With all the vampires, werewolves and demons running about these days, it’s been far too long since I’ve read such a fun historical romance with a hint of gothic darkness. Parker’s books can be ordered on Amazon, or better yet, pick up a signed copy at Dog-Eared Pages bookstore in North Phoenix.
