Spring Training Is Back In The Valley

Romeo and Juliet

61 By Kathryn M. Miller

Scottsdale and six other Arizona cities are once again ready to play ball as Cactus League Spring Training season returns to the Valley. During the month of March, the World Champion San Francisco Giants will take the mound at Scottsdale Stadium (www.scottsdaleaz.gov/ stadium), in the heart of downtown. Just down the street, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies will be prepping for the season at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (www.saltriverfields.com). During March, 15 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams will make an exodus from their home towns to the Greater Phoenix area. While the first ball will be thrown out March 3, residents will have the opportunity to get warmed up for the monthlong Spring Training with a number of satellite events. First up, Scottsdale Civic Center Mall becomes Baseball City March 7-8. Fans of all ages can engage in batting cage and base running challenges, catch a glimpse of the science of baseball and view some of the finest memorabilia that baseball has to offer, in addition to the opportunity to get autographs from favorite players. Learn more about this event on page 6.

The Scottsdale Charros will host The Scottsdale Giant Race March 8, which allows fans to put themselves in the shoes of favorite players. The event takes participants on 9K or threemile runs around Scottsdale Stadium. Or, take a journey back in time with the Cactus League Legacy Trail, a self-guided tour of Downtown Scottsdale’s baseball hangouts, as well as memorabilia collections in Mesa, Tempe and Goodyear.
