Help with your career Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering strongly encourages all of its students to undertake an industrial placement as part of their degree as it is an excellent way to get an insight in to the industry and gain valuable professional experience. The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) works closely with students and employers to support industrial placements. There are numerous benefits to undertaking an industrial placement. Students who successfully pass their placement year, graduate with industrial experience which gives them a competitive edge when they enter the graduate job market. Placements are paid which provides an excellent opportunity to receive competitive wages while also gaining professional experience. Placements also help students develop professional skills as well as industry specific technical skills. Placements usually take place during the penultimate year of study i.e. after part two for BEng/BSc students and after part three for MEng/MSci students. It is also possible for students to complete summer internships throughout their degree. City students undertake placements at a range of employers ranging from start-up ventures to multinational corporations. Previous placement students have gained a deeper knowledge of the industry as well as the various career paths available to them after graduation. Some of our students have also secured graduate employment at the company in which they undertook their industrial placement.
Each year, the PLU advertise hundreds of placement and internship vacancies which students can access through our dedicated online placements vacancy system, InPlace. Placement opportunities are advertised to students throughout the year and professional development workshops are also provided to support students from each department to make successful applications. A key part of the preparation for industrial placement is attending relevant events which are arranged each year and students are encouraged to attend as many events are possible. You can find a summary of the events for SMCSE students below. Please note that due to space limitations, only students who have registered for events will be able to attend so register early to avoid disappointment. Each SMCSE department has a specialist Work Based Learning Advisor from the PLU to support their students. To find out more about the PLU, visit placements.city.ac.uk, email smcse-placements@city.ac.uk or visit us in C102, Tait Building.
