Please use the checklist below that the Careers Service has prepared for you in order to help you make the most of this event and get ahead of the competition.
Before the Fair • Registered for and attended the Fair preparation session or completed the Creative Industries and Social Sciences Fair Prep Quiz to learn how to make the most of the Fair and get a fast-track entry pass? • Pre-registered online via careershub.city.ac.uk/students? • Done some research on the exhibitors that you want to approach on the day? Start with reading the profiles of the exhibitors in this guide. • Researched how employers prefer to be approached at Careers Fairs? • Prepared some relevant questions that demonstrate your interest in that area of work? • Prepared a couple of sentences to introduce yourself clearly and succinctly to organisations? See page 15 of this guide for further information on how to secure a fast-track entry pass. 2|3
On the day • Approach the stand as you would do an interview – first impressions count • Start conversations with expressions such as “I am interested in...” or “I know about your company and would like to find out more about...” • Be prepared to outline succinctly your knowledge of the company, express enthusiasm in what the company does and describe how your background could contribute to their needs • F ind out what exhibitors are looking for by asking them what skills and experience they require. You can then tailor your experiences and responses to what they are looking for • Have a notepad ready so you can note down the name of anyone who you really enjoyed talking to. If they inspired you to work for their organisation, mention this in your application form • Be proactive and keen: talk to the recruiters • Plan what you are going to wear to project a professional image on the day of the Fair. Present yourself as you would at an interview.

Prepare to answer questions “Tell me about your course and why you decided to study it.” “What interests you about the creative industries/social sciences?” “Tell me a little bit about yourself.” Are you ready to sell yourself positively and succinctly in response to general openers like these? Start with your name, course and year of study. You may then want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest, why you are attending the Fair and why you have approached the employer in front of you. Write your notes on the following lines:
Prepare to ask questions Have a look through the pages that follow and identify employers that you would like to approach at the Fair. Think about questions that you would like to ask each of them and write them down in the notes sections under exhibitors’ profiles in this guide, ready for the day of the Fair. For example, prepare questions that will help you decide if a particular career or a particular organisation may be the one for you. You may wish to find out more about opportunities for professional qualifications, long-term careers prospects, work-life balance, job security, work environment, training and development opportunities, content of work, opportunities to work internationally and job availability. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Ensure you do not ask questions which can be easily answered by doing some very basic research.

How to write a successful CV and covering letter for the creative industries with WeAreStripes and Oath 2.45 – 3.30pm in ALG16 Capacity: 50 This workshop will be co-hosted by WeAreStripes, an initiative which aims to create and increase opportunities for individuals from ethnic backgrounds into the creative industry. WeAreStripes educate on career entry and progression and support current BAME individuals in the industry with educational events, content, mentoring and coaching. Also co-hosted by OATH, this workshop will be will be a chance to speak to people in your dream job and get advice about access routes to your chosen career. Bring your CVs, portfolios and Instagram accounts for these professionals to give you invaluable feedback, direction and the tools you need to land that creative job.

Employability Skills Programme Our Employability Skills Programme is designed in collaboration with employers. The sessions prepare students to make the transition from education to work, covering all aspects of the selection and recruitment process. They explore the skills that are most valued by employers, how students can reflect on these and how students can articulate their experiences clearly when talking to employers. The Division of Language and Communication Science (LCS) of The School of Health Sciences, City, University of London. LCS is the largest provider of speech and language therapy education in the UK. Our staff team includes experts in most domains of speech and language therapy, together with leaders from aligned academic subjects, including phonetics, linguistics, psychology and audiology. The division runs two courses that qualify students to register as speech and language practitioners: a three +one year BSc/MSLT and a two year MSc. Together, these courses admit approximately 130 students per year. We also run a three year non-clinical BSc in language sciences and two post registration MSc courses. We have a thriving PhD programme, with over 20 students currently registered. Our courses have produced graduates who are leading the field, e.g. in clinical practice, SLT management and research. The Language and Communication Science Research Centre conducts world-leading research across a number of specialist areas. These include developmental and acquired language impairment, deafness, sign language and gesture, speech phonology and linguistics, social disadvantage and quality of life. Current funded projects are exploring longitudinal consequences of developmental language disorder, reading in deaf children, measuring asymmetry in the articulation of English speech sounds and technological applications in aphasia therapy. Established in 1984, Pursuing Independent Paths (PIP) encourages and empowers young adults with learning disabilities (LDs) to achieve their full potential. PIP provides intensive, person-centred support to around 65 adults with moderate and severe LDs from two centres in Westminster and in the community. Through engaging, vibrant, creative and fun education, health and personal development activities we empower our students to acquire the skills, competencies and confidence they need to become more independent and live fulfilling lives. We want PIP students to participate in their communities as fully as they are able. Our four key service elements: •W 9 Centre in West London: At W9, we now support 57 young adults with LDs with a wide range of ASDAN accredited education, skills training, recreational opportunities and healthy living activities. Creative learning support all this work • SW1 Centre in Victoria: SW1 enables our older, more isolated service users, many of whom are living alone, to access their local community. Overcoming the fear of networking events “ Practise a few introductory lines at home before you attend the networking event. What are you interested in? What is your favourite module? How are you going to separate yourself from other candidates? Think about how you are going to introduce yourself to the employers and go for it.” EY “ Most of the staff who run the stand at the Fair, have at one time or another been in your shoes. All any business wants is to explain why you should choose them as the best place to come and work.” Office for National Statistics “ You can’t. You just have to go out there. Face your fears and introduce yourself. As an employer that is everything I look for in a candidate. Confidence is key, even if you have to fake it. Think about a topic you are relatively well versed in and go for it. Otherwise simply introduce yourself and allow the other person to tell you all about themselves.” Twipes “ Students should remember they are the reason why the employers are there. In many ways, the students have the power. This should instill confidence in them which will help allay any fears. If you know what employers are attending, you could even grasp the nettle and make an appointment in advance with them on the date of the event. These wipes block sewers, cause fatbergs and wash up on beaches causing huge damage to the environment. Twipes solve this with the world’s first truly flushable wipes.
