You are often encouraged to make the most of your time at University by getting involved in extra-curricular activities, but it can be difficult to know where to start. ExperienceCity is a website designed to help you find the right activity for you, whether there are particular skills that you want to develop or if you are simply looking to meet new people and have fun.
In this booklet you will find inspiring stories from some of our current and former students. These students found activities that were fun, varied and enabled them to meet new people. They gained skills and knowledge which they were able to reflect on and use to enhance their employability. This booklet showcases just a few of the activities on the website. CityBuddies CityBuddies is a peer-mentoring scheme where second and third-year students are matched with new first year students to provide support and answer any questions they might have.
“ Adapting to a new environment can be really difficult, especially when it’s your first time away from home. As an international student, leaving my home in Zimbabwe, I was able to enjoy my first few weeks at university and easily adapt with the help of my CityBuddy. Having someone to help me figure things out made my adjustment an enjoyable learning process and we are now great friends.” Rutendo, BSc International Political Economy
experience.city.ac.uk “ I love the fact that I can say with confidence that so many people have made friends through the Tamil Society and without it they probably would have just walked past each other in the main walkway. It’s nice to have a large social circle because at the end of the day what else do we come to University for (apart from the degree part of course!).” Jance, LLB Law
Tamil Society Tamil Society members take the time to learn about our history and each other through our regular society meetings and activities.
Learn the skills that are most valued by recruiters, how you can reflect on these and how to articulate your experiences clearly when talking to employers. “ The Employability Skills Programme is a wonderful opportunity for anybody looking to improve their employability. It was full of useful tips that could immediately be applied to every situation. I no longer had to guess whether something could be beneficial to my application or not. We were presented with all the relevant do’s and don’ts. It’s definitely a must for first year students regardless of the degree.” Miroslav, BSc Management

“ We created Popcord as our phones kept running out of battery life, and we decided to do something about it! After trying all the solutions in the market – bulky battery cases, easy-to-forget power banks, and tangled-up charging cables – we thought there’d be a better way. So, we set out to put a charging cable on a keyring. Most recently, John Lewis has selected us, to meet with their buying team.” Frank, MSc Innovation, Creativity and Leadership
Widening Participation Tutoring offers paid weekly tutoring in Maths or English to young people in London from backgrounds which are underrepresented within higher education.
“ When young people understand the practical applications of maths and they start to improve, they begin to see how it’s something that they might even enjoy and could consider studying at university in the future. That’s one of the things that’s really rewarding about being a tutor.” Shruti, BEng Mechanical Engineering

Sustainability Sustainability Leaders get involved in a number of initiatives to promote sustainability at City – raising awareness, running campaigns and audits.
“ The main reward of being a Sustainability Leader has been my personal development. Through helping run environmental campaigns and being a Fairtrade Mentor in a local primary school, I’ve grown in confidence and my communication and presentation skills have improved. I like feeling part of something bigger and have been inspired by other students and the staff in the Sustainability team.” Irina, BSc Economics

“ At my job interview for Jacobs Engineering Group, they were really interested in my experience of setting up Project Wildlife. I told them about the challenges of running the project, like attracting potential volunteers and arranging work around their academic schedules. Managing and running a volunteering project alongside my studies shows a host of skills including time management, organisation, people skills and imagination. More importantly, it shows a desire to get things done Ken, MEng Civil Engineering 2015, Graduate Civil Engineer at Jacobs Engineering Group
Volunteering City Volunteering provides a wide range of opportunities to volunteer with local community groups and national charities and provides support to help you set up your own projects.
Professional Mentoring Professional Mentoring offers you the opportunity to engage in a developmental relationship with a person in industry over a six month period.
“ I was a lost undergraduate who didn’t know where his life was heading or what he wanted to pursue. Damian came into my life not only as a mentor, but as a genuine friend who went above and beyond to help me establish a sense of purpose in my life.” Bulbul, BSc International Politics “ Bully was perhaps lacking a little direction, but he is really eager to learn and develop and he will put 100% into everything he pursues. His personal skills, energy and dynamic nature will ensure he is successful.” Damian, Mentor of the Year, Unitemps Branch Manager
