Gaia Caruso Senior Talent Coordinator, Universities Engagement

The 2019 Graduate Jobs Fair is an ideal opportunity for you to network with employers and gain a greater awareness of businesses across a range of industries and sectors. If you are well-prepared and make a good impression, you could even get hired on the day. Use the checklist below to make the most of this event and get ahead of the competition.

Before the Fair

Pre-registered for the Fair online at careershub.city.ac.uk/students/events/detail/727737 Researched the exhibitors that you want to approach on the day? Start by reading through the exhibitor profiles in this guide, then conduct further research into the ones that stand out to you the most. Researched how employers prefer to be approached at Careers Fairs? Prepared some questions to ask employers you meet? Use the space under the exhibitors to note down your employer specific questions. Prepared a couple of sentences to introduce yourself clearly and succinctly to organisations? Checked out careershub.city.ac.uk for the most up-to-date list of exhibitors you can expect to meet on the day? There will be more than listed in this guide.

TOP TIPS Asking killer questions Ensure to turn up prepared with questions that will help you decide if a particular career or organisation is the one for you. These might be about work culture, long-term career prospects, opportunities to work internationally and opportunities for professional qualifications. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Avoid asking questions which are easily answered with basic research.

Get ahead of the game Get fast-track entry to the Fair and learn how to make a great first impression on employers by attending our Fair preparation session on Monday 17th June from 1pm – 2pm. Register your attendance online at: careershub.city.ac.uk/students/events/detail/729976

Making the most of the Careers Clinics City’s careers consultants will deliver Careers Clinic sessions during the Fair. These 15-minute appointments will cover a range of general careers advice, ranging from CV and LinkedIn checks to application advice. Remember to bring along a copy of your CV.

Getting off to a great start Remember that employers are there to meet you, too. Expect to be asked questions such as ‘tell me about your course and why you decided to study it’ and ‘what interests you about our organisation or field?’ Introduce yourself with your name, course and year of study. You may want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest and why you have approached the employer in front of you. Jot down some notes in the space below.

Notes

4|5

On the day Approach the employer as you would do for an interview – first impressions count Start conversations with expressions such as “I am interested in...” or “I know about your company and would like to find out more about...” Be proactive and keen, bring along an up-to-date copy of your CV Briefly outline your knowledge of the company and express enthusiasm in what the company does Ask employers what skills and experience they require so you can tailor your responses to what they are looking for Use the space in the guide to note down the name of anyone you enjoyed talking to. If they inspired you to work for their organisation, mention this in your application form Dress to project a professional image. Present yourself as you would at an interview.

Stand in a huddle in the corner talking to your friends Monopolise a single person Just browse or collect freebies Dress too casually (jeans, trainers and baseball caps are not recommended).

How would you describe your ideal candidate?

We ask some of our exhibitors what they are looking for “TCS offers a year-round graduate programme for tech-savvy, enthusiastic individuals seeking to accelerate their careers in IT. We are looking for recent graduates and post-graduates with a minimum 2:1 degree in IT, computer science or a technology-related subject. We often look for students that are eager to learn, adaptable to new environments and are comfortable with working in a diverse work space.” Tata Consultancy Services “Our ideal candidate is sensitive to clients’ needs, can draw insights and use creativity in ways that help companies grow and improve. They like to work constructively in team environments, are supportive of others and can influence positive change. The ideal candidate is also intellectually curious, shares knowledge and experience and is passionate about learning. They will use their initiative to generate fresh ideas.” Sparta Global “Ideal candidates are flexible, passionate, creative and have good technical skills. We are also looking for people with strong numerical skills, excellent verbal communication and good written communication. Candidates must be adaptive, keen to join a fresh team and have a good understanding of the platform and its functionality.” Projee UK Ltd “Trusted, committed, progressive and fun. These are the four values that underpin all that we do at Optionis. Each valued member of our team puts these core values into practice every day through the work that they do and the impact they make. Each person at Optionis is passionate about what they do and this is illustrated by the growth and results we achieve as a company.” Optionis “If you are not afraid of heights or working in a waste management environment then our graduate training programme will be perfect for you. It is very practical and ‘hands-on’ and you’ll be expected to help guide the profitability of the business using your engineering skills, knowledge and a sixth-sense for preventative maintenance.” LondonEnergy “We look for students who are generally strong academics and are on track for a 2:1 final result in their undergraduate degree. We seek candidates who are interested in ultimately pursuing a legal career and are committed to making the most of working at law firms and in-house legal departments.” F-LEX 6|7

All our trainees are supported through our rigorous programme by a strong network of experienced educators. In January 2017, our training was rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. www.arkteachertraining.org @ArkTTonline
