Welcome from Hansard

Sponsors of the School of Arts and Social Sciences Careers Events programme 2016/17 “I am in the middle of reading a remarkable work – full of double-dealing, treachery, scorn and abuse. It is called Hansard.” Hansard is your official record of everything that is said in Parliament. Working in the cockpit of democracy, Hansard reporters record everything that is said not only in the Chamber of the House of Commons and Westminster Hall, but in Select Committees, where expert witnesses give evidence and the world’s leading figures are questioned. As the Liberal politician Lord Samuel said in 1949, “Hansard is history’s ear, already listening.” Translating speech into the written word is complex, so our reporters have to be creative and able to think imaginatively about language. We work to tight deadlines, preserving the flavour of MPs’ speeches and capturing the drama as political events unfold. Our model of parliamentary reporting, established in 1909, has been adopted in legislatures around the world. Hansard is a byword for accuracy and speed of production. A Hansard career begins with a rigorous three-month training course, followed by a further three months of work-based learning. Successful reporters are awarded a postgraduate diploma in parliamentary reporting accredited by City, University of London. We are also part of a 500-strong team of support staff, specialists and experts who organise and facilitate debates and inquiries in the two main Chambers and the Committees of the House of Commons — a unique and stimulating place to work. Hansard and the House of Commons Chamber and Committees Team are delighted to sponsor City’s School of Arts and Social Sciences Careers Events programme 2016/17. If you would like to speak to someone about a career in Hansard, please contact Jonathan Hoare, Learning and Development manager: hoarejd@parliament.uk
