HELLO

H

ello and welcome to the 2015/16 sports season which promises a great deal, both in terms of opportunities for all our students and competitive success built on the foundations developed over the last few years. Sport is a fantastic entity as development is always necessary to see improvement. Development at City has definitely led to benefits throughout the 2014/15 season; from the opening of the new CitySport facility to our medal and trophy haul, wins and promotion in the BUCS Leagues to an exciting night of awards held at the Worshipful Company of Saddlers Hall in March. The last year was definitely one to remember. For this season we have added several new sports to our representative programme; Volleyball, Futsal and our Women’s Rugby programme. These sports were added thanks to student feedback and have the full support of their respective national governing bodies (Volleyball England, The F.A. and the RFU). This offers the potential for many more opportunities in the future.

Bill Thompson Head of Sport & Leisure Services

What is TeamCity? Being part of TeamCity is about much more than representing City University London competitively. Whether you choose to volunteer at our events, help at practice sessions, coach or officiate for one of the representative teams or simply take part in our social sports programme, you will be part of TeamCity. Joining will not only add to your social network, it will provide great opportunities to develop skills for your future, benefitting your cv and adding to your prospects upon graduation.

Equality and diversity We welcome everyone from City University London’s diverse community to get involved in our sports programme. Our sports clubs, individual sport opportunities and CityActive sessions are open to all City students.

The Sport & Leisure Services team at City are committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and equality and ensuring best practice is implemented at all times. All team captains, coaches and staff are encouraged to be welcoming and inclusive when engaging with students participating in sport.

Future training programmes are planned to heighten awareness of the need for inclusion and equality in sport and will feature techniques to address homophobic, transphobic, sexist, racist and other forms of discriminatory language and behaviour both on and off the playing field. TeamCity has signed up to the UK Government Equalities Office (GEO) Charter on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in sport, the aim of which is to make

sport a welcoming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. The Charter outlines the importance of creating an environment where everyone is able to participate and enjoy sport, whoever they are and whatever their background. It also seeks to promote fairness, equality, respect and dignity. TeamCity shares the desire to address the issues that affect participation in sport and work to ensure that opportunities to participate are open to and supportive of everyone.

Keep fit University life can be tough, but when you’re moving, burning calories, developing muscle and assisting brain development it makes it easier to maintain your study/life balance.

5

Time management Participating in a sport can involve a big time commitment with practice sessions, training and games. By getting involved you will learn how to better manage your time.

8 Attitude Playing sport can help you learn to win gracefully, as well as how to lose gracefully.

Self esteem Pushing yourself in sport and accomplishing your goals will help you feel good about yourself.

6 Resilience Learning to cope and overcome adversity is a great life skill.

9 Volunteering Volunteering helps to broaden your life experiences. You can help at our events or practice sessions; become a referee or even a coach.

Have fun Looking at the smiles on students’ faces while on the pitch or their satisfaction after winning a game it’s obvious they’re enjoying themselves. Because it’s fun.

Perseverance When you set goals for yourself in sports it may take you a while to achieve them but you will only reach your goals by pushing through when things get tough.

7

Teamwork You need to be a team player; not only on the pitch, but when you are looking for your dream graduate job you’ll need to demonstrate you can work within a group.

10 Long lasting friendships Meet people from City’s diverse community and develop friendships that will last throughout your time at University and beyond.

Sport at City – A student perspective working hard together at training and doing well in competitions. I’ve always wanted to be able to do gymnastics and with the help of the team and from our coach I achieved my goal of being able to tumble. Andrew Walker

BSc Mathematics and Finance

Having not really played sport as a youngster I got into competitive rowing a fair few years before coming to City, It was the best! I trained hard, pushed the boundaries of what my body could do and reaped the rewards. Along the way making friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life. Mainstream team sports are not my thing and as City did not have a rowing club I wanted to find something new that would continue to challenge me. I joined the Mountaineering Society and learnt to rock climb, becoming close friends with a group of like-minded students who also enjoyed climbing and wanted to progress and compete. With the help of the Sport & Leisure Team we started the competitive Climbing Club and I became the co-captain. The University has provided fantastic support; we’ve had access to outdoor equipment for training, use of the sports minibus to get to and from competitions and weekends in the Peak District and they have organised club training sessions at the Mile End Climbing Wall with a climbing coach. From its simple beginnings the Club has progressed and we’ve now competed against other universities at events in London and Sheffield and the whole experience has just got better and better each year. Whilst at City I also played American Football for the first time and joined the Cheerleading Team. Cheerleading was great! I made so many good friends with people I would never have met if I hadn’t joined. Our coach was fantastic and it was awesome

Participation in sport has been such a positive experience for me. Having worked for two years before coming to university I’d experienced working within a team and being part of the different Clubs has helped me further develop my team work, timemanagement and communication skills. These tools have helped me to become a more rounded person, be more dedicated to my goals and more focused on my academic work. As the co-captain of the Climbing Club I’ve had the opportunity to be a leader and learn all that goes with it, although to be honest the whole Club worked together to build it up. From experience I know these skills will translate well back into the workplace, helping me stand out as I move on from the University, but the main thing I’ve gained is a host of new friends both inside and outside of sport. When you start university everyone is in the same boat. You might not know anyone to start with but as soon as you get involved in one of the many clubs City has to offer you won’t regret it, everybody becomes part of the team and it’s all about making friends, doing something you enjoy and having fun. There’s so much happening at City and if you don’t take the leap and get involved you’ll miss out on all the fun and exciting things going on. That doesn’t mean you have to represent the University. It doesn’t mean you have to play at a national level. There are many clubs that allow you to take part in something active, without having the pressure to take it too seriously. But when you take part be determined. When you train, train hard to be your best and no matter what your ability you can still reap the rewards of sport and belonging to a team.. Get involved!

SOCIAL AND REPRESENTATIVE SPORTS

Getting involved in the CityActive social sports programme couldn’t be simpler. Just come along by yourself or with friends to one of the coached sessions and join in with everybody else there.

SOCIAL AND REPRESENTATIVE SPORTS

Team sports

There are many opportunities to represent City in competitive team sports. Whether you are a complete beginner, have represented your school or college or even played at county or national level, you can get involved in one or more of our 26 teams. Many of our teams compete in either the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues or the London Universities Sports Leagues (LUSL) against teams from other universities across the South East of England on Wednesday afternoons. Team trials take place between Saturday 26th September and Wednesday 9th October 2015. Find the date and time for your specific sports team trials during Welcome Week or by emailing sport@city.ac.uk.

Individual sports

If your interest is in individual sports and you would like to represent City as an individual or on an elite stage, the Sport & Leisure Services Team can offer support with competition entry, travel costs and possible coaching advice. You will need to present any qualifications, competition records and relevant UK or international rankings (if applicable). To find out more about the individual sport opportunities available at University level through BUCS see the sports page at www.bucs.org.uk. If you would like to represent City in your sport contact sports@city.ac.uk to discuss how we can support you.

Sports 09 membership card for representative students

British Universities & Colleges Sport British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK, whose vision is ‘to enhance the student experience through sport’. BUCS delivers more than 50 sports to over 160 universities, comprising a busy league programme of over 4800 teams and over 100 championship knockout competition events every year. They also host the BUCS Nationals for individual sport athletes, the UK’s largest annual multi-sport event. BUCS is also responsible for managing and coordinating the Great Britain and Northern Ireland teams for the World University Summer and Winter Games and the World University Championships.

To represent City in your chosen sport you must first attend a trial or open practice. Once selected for a team you must purchase a sports membership card in order to train and play matches.

London University Sports Leagues London University Sports Leagues (LUSL) and knockout competitions are also organised by BUCS specifically for universities in the London region. Their rules are more relaxed than BUCS competitions and they are targeted at less competitive teams or newly formed teams that are just starting out. The aim of LUSL is to create a more fun and relaxed arena to encourage wider participation in sport.

The majority of City’s sports teams compete in the BUCS leagues with a handful participating in LUSL competitions. Whether you are a member of a sports team or an individual athlete you will have the chance to travel around the UK to other university campuses and compete at international standard facilities and iconic venues. All travel costs to away matches are reimbursed by City University London.

Cards cost £35 for the academic year and cover you if you represent more than one team during the year. The benefits of the sports membership card include: • Reduced membership prices at CitySport • Free strength and conditioning classes with the CitySport fitness team • Free access to pre-season training sessions • Priority access to TeamCity social activities • Priority ticket booking for the annual Sports Awards Dinner • Access to “Team of the week” discounts at CityBar • Coaching and refereeing course opportunities • BUCS entry fees • Transport to away matches • Loan of representative team kit • Access to training venues • Qualified coached training sessions (where applicable) • Contribution to the cost of match officials. To purchase your card you just need to bring a passport sized photograph, your City ID card and your payment to the CitySport reception, where you will be issued with your card. Once purchased, you can represent City throughout the 2015/16 season.

Despite some narrow losses to experienced sides early in the season, the team improved enormously and ended the year with its first ever win against a BUCS league team, London South Bank University. The progress didn’t stop there as the Sentinels followed the win with another victory against the University of East London Titans in a post–season friendly.
