University life Student Centre The Student Centre is your first point of contact for information about the University and the services it provides. We can help with accommodation, financial support, visa and immigration advice, payment of fees, replacement ID cards and general enquiries, including registration, exams and graduation. I have nowhere to live: what should I do? The University Halls are usually full at the start of the academic year but vacancies do occur throughout the year and you can apply for housing online at www.city.ac.uk/accommodation.
When will I receive my student finance? After registration City will confirm your enrolment to the Student Loan Company (SLC) who will then pay your student finance (e.g. maintenance loan) within three to five working days directly into the bank account you have confirmed to the SLC.
We will look at the date of application, the distance you live from the University and whether you have a serious medical condition or disability. If Halls are not for you, we have information on our website about looking for private housing, and a link to StudentPad which is a database of private landlords and has a message board on which you can leave your details and meet other students looking to share accommodation. www.citystudentpad.co.uk/ accommodation www.city.ac.uk/private-housing

I’m not happy in my room in Halls of Residence: is there anything I can do? If it’s a question of maintenance or noise then tell the reception at the Hall, who will deal with the problem. If you wish to move rooms then discuss this with the Hall staff (please note that this will depend on room availability at the Hall). For those wishing to move out of Halls, please complete a leaver’s form from the Student Centre and we’ll try and fill your room as soon as possible. My student finance has not yet been confirmed: what help can I get from City? City will be able to provide a limited short-term loan if there is a significant delay in receiving your student finance: we will require confirmation of your application for student finance. For further help please attend a Financial Support drop-in session held on Mondays and Thursdays between 14:00 and 15:30. International students What’s on for international students in Welcome Week? On Tuesday 24th September, the University will host the International Students Welcome Reception. This is an opportunity for international students to meet their peers from around the world. To register for this event, which will be held in the historic Gibson Hall at 13 Bishopsgate, please visit www.city.ac.uk/ international-students-welcomereception I have a question about my UK visa or my passport. Can I get some advice? City has a team of International Student Advisers who can assist students with UK visa and passport issues. My visa says I need to register with the police. What should I do? If your visa indicates that you are required to register with the police, it is important that you do so as soon as you can. You will need to go to the Overseas Visitors Records Office (OVRO), which is located at 180 Borough High Street, SE1 1LH. Do I need to have my passport and visa checked? Yes, the University is required to check your eligibility to study in the UK before you are permitted to commence your studies. Here you can talk about anything that is troubling you with a professional and experienced Counsellor who is sensitive to the needs of all City students. The service is confidential. Initially, we provide lunchtime drop-in hours every weekday at 13:00 when you can come along for a consultation. After your consultation, you may be offered short-term individual counselling or longer-term group counselling. The Learning Success team at City provides services in four areas: dyslexia support, disability support, mental health and wellbeing support and academic learning support.
Am I obliged to disclose a disability to the University? No, but if you register with Learning Success we can discuss adjustments which can help ensure that you are not disadvantaged while you are studying. We offer a confidential service and will only share information about you with your permission. Am I entitled to any additional funding because of my disability? Home students with a disability, mental health condition or learning difficulty affecting their ability to study are entitled to apply for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) through Student Finance England (SFE) or the NHS. Is support from the Chaplaincy team available to everyone? Yes, support is provided to people of all faiths and none. The Chaplaincy team provide general guidance for anyone in need and act as a “listening ear”. The chaplains are available to everyone and you can ask to talk to any of the team.
How does the University support my religious practice? The University provides rooms in the College Building for students and staff of all faiths to use for prayer and reflection during term-time from Monday to Friday. Details of the rooms and times available can be found on the student intranet in the “Faith” section.

For Muslim students and staff, ablution facilities and additional rooms for Maghrib prayers are also available during the week. Friday prayers for Muslim students and staff are led by the University Imam at Tompion Hall, a two-minute walk from the Northampton Square campus.

I am an international student: can I register for NHS Services? As long as you are registered on a course at City for six months or more you are entitled to NHS care. You will need to register with a GP in the area you are living in the UK. For information on how to do this, contact the student health service or visit our intranet.

What immunisations are recommended in the UK? Adults should have the following vaccines: • Tetanus • Diphtheria • Polio • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) • Meningitis C Vaccine: If you are under 24 years of age it is strongly recommended that you have the Meningitis C vaccine.

The Student Development and Outreach team is responsible for Widening Participation programmes, professional mentoring and community volunteering. We can help you become a Student Ambassador, a role in which you will work with young people in London to promote higher education, help raise aspirations and attainment and contribute towards a fairer society. We also support community volunteering and we can help if you want to commit to a charity or community group or if you want to set up your own project. Finally, our professional mentoring scheme allows you to apply for a mentor who works in a field you are interested in. 12
What makes a good Student Ambassador? We are looking for students who enjoy working with young people and are organized, responsive and committed. The role requires you to be outgoing, friendly and approachable. What is the rate of pay? £7.37 per hour How do I become a Student Ambassador? We will be looking to recruit new Ambassadors in the first term (deadline 12:00, October 11th 2013). Fill in the application (available on our website and in the Careers Centre) and return it to the team before the deadline. If successful you will be invited to interview.
What volunteering opportunities do you have? We offer over 250 opportunities to volunteer with various organisations, charities and community groups across London. To search through opportunities, please visit our website: volunteering.city.ac.uk. How do I apply to volunteer? Use the website to search for keywords around what you’re interested in, or use the suggested search fields to start getting some ideas. If you see an opportunity you would like to apply for, then you will need to register on the system. Click the ‘Register’ link on the homepage and fill in your details. After you have registered, you will be able to apply for opportunities online.

What’s the difference between IntraCity Sport and Representational Sport? What does the Campus Physical Activity Programme involve? C.A.P. offers a variety of activities including Yoga, Pilates, spinning, box circuits and Zumba. What is the Students’ Union? The City University London Students’ Union (CULSU) is here to help students have a great time at University. All students are automatically part of CULSU once enrolled. We ensure that the student voice is heard by listening to what you want; lobbying on your behalf within and outside the University; and campaigning to improve your experience at City. We also support clubs, sports and societies to help them flourish and organise regular events in Saddlers Bar. Your Union is led by three students who are elected by you each year and take a sabbatical year to represent students at a senior level within the University. Your Students’ Union sabbatical team this year are (from left to right), James Perkins (Vice-President, Education), Giulio Folino (President) and Rima Amin (Vice-President, Activities and Development). All Schools also have their own part-time School Representation Officer, as well as individual course representatives who work hard to collect your views and make sure they are fed back to the University. There are also part-time officers who work on representation activities for specific groups, including international, women, black, disabled and lesbian, gay and bisexual students. There will be elections in October to recruit new student representatives, so look out for opportunities to get involved!
Are there any clubs and societies I can join? CULSU supports over 80 clubs and societies which cater for a broad range of activities and interests, from photography to snowboarding, cheerleading to politics. If you can’t find a club or society to suit your interest, we can help you start one. We also provide a range of structured volunteering opportunities. For example, if you are interested in journalism and video production you can join the student media team which produces a regular print publication, online articles, podcasts and video reports: you can find out more on the Union website. If you are a postgraduate law student, you can volunteer in the Union Support Service (USS), our advocacy and advice unit. Look out for more information in the Freshers Fair.
What is the Union Support Service (USS)? The Union Support Service is our advocacy and advice unit run by professional staff and a team of trained student advisors. This peer-to-peer service provides free, professional and confidential support to City students dealing with academic problems, including submitting forms for appeals and extenuating circumstances and accusations of academic misconduct, and is independent from the University. E: uss@city.ac.uk What does the Union organise? The Union organises weekly club events on Wednesday evenings and other events through the year in Saddlers Bar. We also arrange bigger events such as end-of-term parties, the End of Year Ball and the social side of the annual Varsity sporting event. How and where can I use computers on campus? Your university login ID was assigned during the online registration process. You will need this ID to access the computers in our labs. Our 24-hour labs can be found in EG03, EG04 and EG05 in the Drysdale Building. We also have labs in the University and College Buildings that are open during the day. Where can I get my password? Your password was set during the online registration process. It contained a combination of letters and numbers with at least one capital letter. If you have forgotten your password or would like to change it to something more memorable please visit www.city. ac.uk/changepassword. How can I access my University email? You can access your email online by visiting https://email.city.ac.uk.
What is Moodle? Moodle is the University’s Online Learning Environment, providing access to module handouts, activities, online assignment submission and communication tools. Moodle is available online 24 hours a day, except for periods of maintenance between 07:00 and 09:00 on Tuesdays. How do I access Moodle? On campus, click on the Moodle desktop icon. Off campus, open a web browser – we recommend Firefox – go to moodle.city.ac.uk. Login with your computing services username (e.g. ab123 or abcd123) and password.

Don’t forget that online resources can be accessed 24 hours a day. How can I find the books I need? It’s easy to find the books you need: just use our online library catalogue. You can type in any key word or author name and the catalogue will tell you where to find it in the Library. Don’t forget to make a note of the shelf number if it’s a print book, or just click to log in for online resources. Where is the Library catalogue? You can access the catalogue over the web, wherever you are, or you can use one of the dedicated catalogue PCs in the Library. We also have a mobile app if you want to check books and online resources while you’re on the go. How many books can I borrow? You can have up to 15 books at any one time. Where can I study? Finding your way around Angel

Travel City is located in central London and has excellent transport links. The nearest London Underground stations to City are Angel (Northern Line) and Farringdon (Circle Line; Hammersmith & City Line; National Rail Services). Both of these stations are approximately ten minutes’ walk from Northampton Square. There are several bus routes which run by Northampton Square, including the following: 4, 19, 30, 38, 43, 55, 56, 73, 153, 205, 214, 243, 274, 341, 394, 476 For further information on public transport in London, please visit www.tfl.gov.uk.
Our neighbourhood During your first weeks at City, try to find the time to explore the local area. Just beyond the Myddelton Street Building, minutes from Northampton Square, Exmouth Market is one of London’s foremost ‘foodie’ streets, with restaurants and bars including Moro, Bincho Yakitori and Santore. During the week, many restaurants set up street food stalls offering reasonably priced lunches to take away. Around Angel, you will find plenty of shops (including major supermarkets), cafes, restaurants and bars. The area around King’s Cross is undergoing a complete transformation and new buildings, public squares and shops are opening all the time.

In Clerkenwell, close to Farringdon Station, there are more restaurants and bars, together with one of London’s foremost nightclubs, Fabric. Farringdon is also a vibrant design hub: look out for Clerkenwell Design Week in May. Shoreditch is a short walk from City and is one of London’s most exciting and diverse areas, with live music, art and design galleries and unique shops. Shoreditch is also where some of the city’s most innovative tech and digital start-ups are based. And don’t forget that from City’s main campus, it is just a short (20 – 30 minute) walk to the West End, where you will find theatres, cinemas, shops, restaurants, bars, a rich history and much more!
