Justin Currie

Hilarious world-class stand-up from internationally acclaimed star of Live at the Apollo, The Royal Variety Performance, Channel 4’s Comedy Gala 2012, Best of Edinburgh Comedy Festival, Jason Manford’s Comedy Rocks and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. No gimmicks, just great craic...!

Scottish singer/songwriter Justin Currie is most famous for his role as founder member and front man of Del Amitri. Currently working as a successful solo artist, his music is dominated by strong imagery and storytelling, powerful yet understated vocals and a sound that, whilst firmly rooted in nineties pop-rock, translates beautifully into modern, urban ballads. With influences from Nick Cave, Crowded House and Mark Lanegan, his music is hauntingly dark, yet refreshingly uplifting.

Dear Potential Ticket Buyer Why should you come and see my show? Well firstly because it’ll be funny, and to be honest that’s the only reason. I’m not going to pretend my comedy can change the world. I’m not promising nudity or fire breathing. It’ll just be me telling you stories and jokes to make you laugh. You might have seen me doing stand-up on your television – it’ll be a lot like that, but more of it and in 3D. It’s all new for 2013. Be brilliant if you came. See you soon – Justin

Strawbs

An Acoustic Evening With

Ian Hunter

Ian Hunter returns to City Varieties for a rare acoustic show accompanied by guitarist Andy York (John Mellencamp) and double-bassist Dave Rowe (Johnny Cash). As the lead songwriter and vocalist from Mott The Hoople, Ian achieved mega-stardom during the glam era of the 70s following a huge chart hit with the Bowie-penned single All The Young Dudes. His acclaimed book, Diary of a Rock‘n’Roll Star charts the highs and lows of this hedonistic period. Since 1974, Ian has pursued a successful solo career both as a performer and songwriter and recently released his critically lauded 20th album – When I’m President.

The first album from folk-rock legends Strawbs, was recorded with Sandy Denny in 1967, a year before her first album with Fairport Convention. On the strength of this, A&M signed Strawbs as the first British band on the label. The band has a devoted fan base that continues to grow on the strength of both their recent recordings and classic hits. As Strawbs now move gracefully into their fifth decade of music making, the band comprises David Cousins, along with lead guitarist Dave Lambert, and the astonishingly versatile Chas Cronk, who together formed the front-line of the classic 1970s line-up. strawbsweb.co.uk

Everybody in the theatre can hear you scream! Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman in Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an evening of unremitting drama, transporting the audience into a terrifying and ghostly world. A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep... Now celebrating its 23rd year in the West End, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful theatre events ever staged.

Henning Wehn

10cc’s Graham Gouldman & Friends

German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn is a fountain of knowledge. There’s no shortcut to success, hard work will eventually pay off and there is no shame in paying tax. But what he knows bestest is that his comedy shows are a guaranteed success. Either he’s funny or he confirms a national stereotype. It’s a win-win situation. Wunderbar!

Anyone who’s attended a 10cc concert in recent years is likely to have seen band co-founder Graham Gouldman’s opening acoustic set, featuring some of the hits he wrote for other artistes. Now, under the banner of Graham Gouldman’s Heart Full of Songs, Gouldman and his 10cc bandmates present a full-length intimate acoustic performance. The shows will feature 10cc classics such as I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday plus pre-10cc Gouldman hits such as Bus Stop, Heart Full Of Soul, For Your Love and No Milk Today; as well as songs from his highly acclaimed new solo album Love And Work, and some surprises.

Celebrating 20 years since its first staged performance, West End and Broadway leading lady Kerry Ellis stars in this iconic concert of the smash-hit Tony Awardwinning musical Rent. The production will also star runner up of ITV’s Superstar, Rory Taylor. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, the story follows a year in the life of a group of friends struggling to make it in the big city under the shadow of HIV/AIDS and includes the songs, Seasons Of Love, Out Tonight and Finale B. Kerry Ellis has rapidly become the first lady of musicals and is emerging as a major recording and film star too. She originated the role of Meat in Queen’s We Will Rock You and has played Elphaba in Wicked, Nancy in Oliver!, Eliza in My Fair Lady, Ellen in Miss Saigon and Fantine in Les Miserables. Her album collaboration with Brian May, Wicked In Rock was a major chart success and she’s recently completed filming for Les Miserables – finishing off 2012 with the arena tour of Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds, alongside Jason Donovan and Leeds’ own Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs!

I Was A Rat! insists a scruffy page boy who turns up one evening on the doorstep of old married couple Bob and Joan. But what is he now? A terrifying monster rampaging in the sewers? A money-spinning fairground freak? A champion wriggler and a downy card? Or just an ordinary boy, though a little ratty in his habits? Philip Pullman’s glorious and gripping story is brought to life on the professional stage for the first time in the UK. Combining humour, fantasy, and adventure this moving and darkly comic tale slowly reveals its connection to one of the most famous fairy tales of all time. Full of music, fantastic physical performances and unforgettable images I Was A Rat! will surprise, delight and move audiences of all ages. Adapted and directed by Teresa Ludovico, artistic director of Teatro Kismet in Bari, Southern Italy, best known here for her thrilling visual and physical productions of Beauty & The Beast, The Snow Queen and The Mermaid Princess.
