GOOD FRIDAY APRIL 3, 2015

Welcome to Cityview Presbyterian Church

C TYVIEW

presby terian chu rch

To Our Guests: Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview. Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service. The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today. If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found along the center aisle, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson (dadamson@cityviewchicago.org) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.

For Children: Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service. Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger. Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the opportunities and concerns portion of the service. If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson (lyndabadamson@gmail.com).

2

Community Life: Before the Service Each week, we take time before the service to fellowship and prepare for worship. Refreshments are served starting at 9:45 AM outside of the sanctuary. Community Groups Community Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together. Tenebrae: A Service of Darkness Please enter humbly, worship deeply, and leave quietly this evening with your heart centered on the suffering of Christ for you and your salvation. We will observe a diminishing of light through the service in the pattern of tenebrae worship. This tradition dates from the fifth century and was treated as a sort of funeral service, or dirge, commemorating the death of Jesus Christ. It was from the extinguishing of lights that the service came to be known as tenebrae (darkness).

Order of Worship Good Friday: day of the cross, day of suffering, day of hope, day of abandonment, day of victory, day of mourning, day of joy, day of endings, day of beginnings. . . - Henri Nouwen Jesus became the greatest liar, perjurer, thief, adulterer and murderer that mankind has ever known—not because he committed these sins, but because he was actually made sin for us. - Martin Luther

Prelude — O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (Clarinet) Greetings Dear friends, we have come together at this solemn moment in the life of the church, to reflect on the sufferings of our Lord in his last days, and to dwell on our own shortcomings and human failings. Our hearts are great with sorrow and contrition, as we pray for forgiveness for the errors of our foolish and arrogant ways. The darkness covers us all, and our spirits are brought low. Come, then, let us walk in the shadows. Come then, let us seek the light.

Prayer of Invocation Responsive Reading — Isaiah 53: 3-6 He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, and we hid our faces from him. He was despised, and we knew him not. Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows. Yet we knew him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned each of us to our own ways, and God has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

The Warning Scripture Reading — Matthew 26:20-25, 30-34 Meditation on the First Word Lord Jesus, you gave your life for us. You suffered and died that we might be made whole.

Extinguishing the First Candle Responsive Reading — Psalm 51:1-3, 5-6, 10-11 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sins are ever before me. Behold, I was raised in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden parts you shall make me to know wisdom. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not from your presence, and take not your holy spirit from me.

The Betrayal Scripture Reading — Matthew 26:47-56 Meditation on the Fourth Word Lord Jesus, you gave your life for us. You suffered and died that we might be made whole.

Extinguishing the Fourth Candle Responsive Reading — Psalm 32:1-2, 7, 10 Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are concealed. Blessed are they unto whom the Lord punishes not wickedness and in whose spirit there is no deceit. The Lord is our hiding place. He shall protect us from trouble, and shall surround us with songs of deliverance. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked, but those who trust in the Lord shall receive mercy.

Special Music — Ah Holy Jesus Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended, that we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted! Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee! ‘Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee; I crucified thee.

The Accusation Scripture Reading — Matthew 26:59-68 Meditation on the Fifth Word Lord Jesus, you gave your life for us. You suffered and died that we might be made whole.

Extinguishing the Fifth Candle Responsive Reading — Psalm 143:1-2, 9-10 Hear my prayer, O Lord. Give ear to my supplications. In your faithfulness and in your righteousness, answer me. Enter not into judgment with your servant, for in your sight shall no man living be justified. Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies, for I fly unto you for safety.

The Mockery Scripture Reading — Mark 15:12-20 Meditation on the Sixth Word Lord Jesus, you gave your life for us. You suffered and died that we might be made whole.

Extinguishing the Sixth Candle Responsive Reading — Psalm 38:1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 21 O Lord, rebuke me not in your wrath, neither chasten me in your displeasure. For my iniquities are gone over my head, and as a heavy burden, I can bear them no more. I am troubled. I am bowed down greatly. I go mourning all the day long. I am feeble and sore broken. I have cried out by reason of the disquietness of my heart. My heart pants. My strength fails me. The light of my eyes is gone from me. Forsake me not, O Lord. O my God, be not far from me.

The Death Scripture Reading — Luke 23:33-46 Meditation on the Seventh Word Lord Jesus, you gave your life for us. You suffered and died that we might be made whole.

Statement of Faith — from the Belgic Confession What do you believe about the work of God? We believe that God—who is perfectly merciful and also very just— sent his Son to assume the nature in which the disobedience had been committed, in order to bear in it the punishment of sin by his most bitter passion and death. What do you believe about the work of Jesus Christ? We believe that Jesus Christ presented himself in our name before his Father, to appease his wrath with full satisfaction by offering himself on the tree of the cross and pouring out his precious blood for the cleansing of our sins, as the prophets had predicted. Why did he endure all this? He endured all this for the forgiveness of our sins. What comfort does this give you? We find all comforts in his wounds and have no need to see or invent any other means to reconcile ourselves with God than this one and only sacrifice, once made, which renders believers perfect forever.
