Second Sunday in Lent March 20, 2011
To Our Guests: If you are new to Cityview, or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards (called “Connection Cards”) at the end of each aisle. These are a way for you to both communicate with us and to request information about Cityview. Connection cards come with a “no hassle” guarantee- we will not call you unless you specifically ask us. However, if you request information, the appropriate ministry leader will get in touch with you.
Our Purpose: You might be wondering, “Whatʼs this church all about?” At Cityview, we keep it simple: We are imperfect people that gather together in response to the grace of Jesus Christ. We are committed to worshiping God, loving each other well and serving the West Loop, the city of Chicago and the world.
The Liturgical Year The Liturgical Year, also known as the Christian year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons that determines, in Christian churches, when celebrations, memorials, commemorations, and solemnities are to be observed. The liturgical year follows the story of Godʼs redemption through Christ and is intended as a pedagogical aid for Christian discipleship- as the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ is modeled year after year. The year begins with Advent, moves into Christmas, through Epiphany, and arrives at Lent, which is a season of preparation for Easter. At the end of Lent is what is known as the Great Triduum (the three great days)- which are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday Easter Vigil. The story reaches its climax at Easter, which lasts fifty days and ends at Pentecost. After Pentecost, we enter Ordinary Time or the Trinity Season, during which the Church is to focus on living the Gospel in day-to-day life.
The Lenten Season What does Lent mean? Lent is a 40-day period before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday (this year, March 9th). We donʼt count Sundays because they are ʻfeastʼ days, commemorating the Resurrection. Lent is a season of soul-searching, repentance and reflection. This tradition originated in the early Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when Christʼs followers sought to rededicate themselves to obedience, sacrifice and acts of service. At the heart of any worthy Lenten observance is a cultivated attitude of repentance and sorrow. A true repentance means a genuine change in heart and mind, a change of disposition where ever in our lives we need to return to God. That is why true repentance can never be satisfied by mere external observances, no matter how rigorous they are. Repentance is no morbid introspection or “guilt trip” in which we become bound up in ourselves, turned inward to the point of unhealthy despair. Rather, it has a holy and compassionate God as its focus. Therefore, Christian repentance always means faith in God, trusting him, responding to his grace. That is why whatever guilt or sorrow we may feel does not crush us, but rather brings us closer to the truth of Godʼs goodness toward His children.
Prayers for Reflection: (These prayers are available for personal reflection and prayer during or after the service.)
Prayer for Those Searching for Truth
Prayer of Belief
Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserve in order to offer me complete forgiveness. I know that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you – the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prelude Preparing in Stillness
Preparing in Stillness: We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we often are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read these reflections, look over the rest of the service, or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
GOD CALLS US *Call to Worship All:
Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy upon us.
Leader:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
All :
And also with you.
Leader:
Let us pray for grace this Lent, turning to Christ in faith. (Silent Prayer)
*Prayer of Adoration Leader:
Holy God, our lives are laid open before you: rescue us from the chaos of sin and through the death of your Son bring us healing and make us whole in Jesus Christ our Lord.
All:
Amen.
3
Call to Worship: We need to be “called to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

GOD CLEANSES US Confession of Sin: Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
*Prayer of Confession Leader:
Let us now call to mind our sin and the infinite mercy of God. God the Father,
All:
Have mercy upon us.
Leader:
God the Son,
All:
Have mercy upon us.
Leader:
God the Holy Spirit,
All:
Have mercy upon us.
Leader:
Holy, blessed and glorious Trinity,
All:
Have mercy upon us.
Leader:
Give us true repentance; forgive us our sins of negligence and ignorance and our deliberate sins; and grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit to examine our lives according to your holy word.
All:
Make our hearts clean, O God; and renew a right spirit within us. Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbor, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light.

Words of Assurance
Based on 1 John 4:12
Assurance of Grace: Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his Name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
Leader:
This is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son. He is the sacrifice for our sins, that we might live through him.
All:
If God loves us so much we ought to love one another. If we love one another God lives in us.
Leader:
Brothers and Sisters, you have heard Godʼs holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?
All:
We do.
The Lordʼs Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

Opportunities and Concerns Greetings Worship Through Giving: Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that every- thing we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
Worship Through Giving
GOD SPEAKS TO US Sermon Text
Mark 3: 20- 35
20
Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” 21
22
And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by 23 Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” And he called them 24 to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is 25 divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, 26 that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is 27 divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house. 28
“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever 29 blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has 30 forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” 31
And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called 32 him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your 33 brothers [1] are outside, seeking you.” And he answered them, “Who are my mother and 34 my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my 35 mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”
Leader: All: The Sermon: Some view the Sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spiritʼs leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

GOD STRENGTHENS US *Confession of Faith
From the Confession of St. Patrick, circa 450 AD
Leader:
Christian, what do you believe?
All:
There is no other God, nor ever was before, nor shall be hereafter, but God the Father, unbegotten and without beginning, in whom all things began, whose are all things, as we have been taught; and his son Jesus Christ, who manifestly always existed with the Father, before the beginning of time in the spirit with the Father, indescribably begotten before all things, and all things visible and invisible were made by him. He was made man, conquered death and was received into Heaven, to the Father who gave him all power over every name in Heaven and on Earth and in Hell, so that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and God, in whom we believe. And we look to his imminent coming again, the judge of the living and the dead, who will render to each according to his deeds. And he poured out his Holy Spirit on us in abundance, the gift and pledge of immortality, which makes the believers and the obedient into sons of God and co-heirs of Christ who is revealed, and we worship one God in the Trinity of holy name.
Prayer of Thanksgiving & Consecration Leader:
The Lord be with you.
All:
And also with you.
Leader:
Lift up your hearts.
All:
We lift them up to the Lord.
Leader:
Let us give thanks to our God.
All:
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Communion
9
Guidelines for Communion: Communion, also called the Lord始s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. Please note: we use wine. White grape Juice is in the center cups of the trays.
Lenten Hymn
Beautiful, Scandalous Night Words and Music: Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong
Go on up to the mountain of mercy To the crimson perpetual tide Kneel down on the shore Be thirsty no more Go under and be purified Follow Christ to the holy mountain Sinner sorry and wrecked by the fall Cleanse your heart and your soul In the fountain that flowed For you and for me and for all Chorus At the wonderful, tragic, mysterious tree On that beautiful, scandalous night you and me Were atoned by His blood and forever washed white On that beautiful, scandalous night On the hillside, you will be delivered At the foot of the cross justified And your spirit restored By the river that poured From our blessed Savior's side Chorus Go on up to the mountain of mercy To the crimson perpetual tide Kneel down on the shore Be thirsty no more Go under and be purified Chorus

*Benediction Leader:
May the peace of Christ be with you.
All:
And also with you.
Leader:
May the Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, give you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and strengthen you to proclaim the word and works of God; and the blessing of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be with you now and always as you go and serve the world God has made.
All:
Thanks be to God.
*Dismissal Leader:
Let us go now to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
All:
Thanks be to God!
