Fifth Sunday in Lent April 10, 2011

To Our Guests: If you are new to Cityview, or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards (called “Connection Cards”) at the end of each aisle. These are a way for you to both communicate with us and to request information about Cityview. Connection cards come with a “no hassle” guarantee- we will not call you unless you specifically ask us. However, if you request information, the appropriate ministry leader will get in touch with you.

Our Purpose: You might be wondering, “Whatʼs this church all about?” At Cityview, we keep it simple: We are imperfect people that gather together in response to the grace of Jesus Christ. We are committed to worshiping God, loving each other well and serving the West Loop, the city of Chicago and the world.

The Liturgical Year The Liturgical Year, also known as the Christian year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons that determines, in Christian churches, when celebrations, memorials, commemorations, and solemnities are to be observed. The liturgical year follows the story of Godʼs redemption through Christ and is intended as a pedagogical aid for Christian discipleship- as the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ is modeled year after year. The year begins with Advent, moves into Christmas, through Epiphany, and arrives at Lent, which is a season of preparation for Easter. At the end of Lent is what is known as the Great Triduum (the three great days)- which are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday Easter Vigil. The story reaches its climax at Easter, which lasts fifty days and ends at Pentecost. After Pentecost, we enter Ordinary Time or the Trinity Season, during which the Church is to focus on living the Gospel in day-to-day life.

The Lenten Season What does Lent mean? Lent is a 40-day period before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday (this year, March 9th). We donʼt count Sundays because they are ʻfeastʼ days, commemorating the Resurrection. Lent is a season of soul-searching, repentance and reflection. This tradition originated in the early Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when Christʼs followers sought to rededicate themselves to obedience, sacrifice and acts of service. At the heart of any worthy Lenten observance is a cultivated attitude of repentance and sorrow. A true repentance means a genuine change in heart and mind, a change of disposition where ever in our lives we need to return to God. That is why true repentance can never be satisfied by mere external observances, no matter how rigorous they are. Repentance is no morbid introspection or “guilt trip” in which we become bound up in ourselves, turned inward to the point of unhealthy despair. Rather, it has a holy and compassionate God as its focus. Therefore, Christian repentance always means faith in God, trusting him, responding to his grace. That is why whatever guilt or sorrow we may feel does not crush us, but rather brings us closer to the truth of Godʼs goodness toward His children.

Prayers for Reflection: (These prayers are available for personal reflection and prayer during or after the service.)

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth

Prayer of Belief

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserve in order to offer me complete forgiveness. I know that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you – the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prelude Preparing in Stillness “The kingdom of God is the new and final age that began with the coming of Jesus. His kingdom is not part of the present age — an age where the flesh reigns; where people are divided, relationships are broken, and suspicion and competition dominate; where money, sex, and power are abused; where leaders are first and servants are last; where behavior is controlled by laws, and identity is defined by race, gender, or social standing; and where gifts and resources are used for the advancement of oneself. Rather, the kingdom of God is the new age. It is the age of the Spirit (Matt 12:28). It is the age of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom 14:17). The kingdom of God is about the renewal, restoration, and reconciliation of all things, and God has made us a part of this great story of salvation.” -–Neil H. Williams

Preparing in Stillness: We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we often are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read these reflections, look over the rest of the service, or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

“Grasping the external propulsion of Godʼs grace is crucial to our understanding of mission. It means that mission is not a duty (something we ʻshould doʼ) but a natural overflow of the gospelʼs work inside us. If you arenʼt motivated to love, serve, and speak the gospel to people, the answer isnʼt to ʻjust do it.ʼ The answer is to examine your heart, repent of sin, and discern where your unbelief is short-circuiting the natural outward movement of the gospel. As the gospel renews your heart, it will also renew your desire to move out in faith into the relationships and opportunities God places in your path. To put it simply, the grace of God is always going somewhere—moving forward, extending his kingdom, propelling his people toward love and service to others. As we learn to live in light of the gospel, mission should be the natural overflow. Godʼs grace brings renewal internally (in us) so that it might bring renewal externally (through us).” -–Bob Thune and Will Walker

GOD CALLS US *Call to Worship

Based on Psalm 91:2; Romans 10:9, 13

Leader:

Let us worship God!

All:

He is our refuge and our fortress, our God, in whom we trust.

Leader:

Let us confess with our mouths, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead.

All:

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Leader:

Let us call upon our true God, believing him in our hearts, confessing him with our mouths, worshiping him in spirit and in truth.

*Prayer of Adoration Leader:

Heavenly Father, you have invited all who are thirsty to come drink the waters of eternal life.

All:

And so we come to drink deeply of your grace. Refresh us, for we are weary.

Leader:

King of Heaven, you are advancing your Kingdom throughout the world.

All:

May the reign of Christ be a reality among us today. Renew us by your Spirit, for we want to be more like Jesus.

Leader:

Eternal God, you have promised to meet us when we gather in your name.

All:

And so we gather in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Meet us, free us from our sin, renew us with your grace.

3

Call to Worship: We need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

GOD CLEANSES US *Prayer of Confession All:

Father in heaven, you invite us to bring our brokenness to you. You invite us to bring our worldʼs brokenness to you. You claim to be able to heal us and our world. Yet we confess that we sometimes remain aloof from you. We have been hesitant to trust you with our pain. We have been hesitant to trust you with our guilt. We have been hesitant to trust you with our shame. We have been hesitant to trust you with our world. We have chosen our impotent anger over a childlike trust in you. Forgive us and renew us. Teach us to live in hope. Teach us to wait in hope. Teach us to work in hope. Bring your kingdom. We need it. Our world needs it.

Confession of Sin: Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

.

*Words of Assurance

Assurance of Grace: Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his Name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

Leader:

The Lord has ransomed us from our futile ways, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, the Lamb without blemish or spot. We have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and abiding Word of God.

All:

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things are made new.

Leader:

Brothers and Sisters, you have heard Godʼs holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

All:

We do.

*The Lordʼs Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

Opportunities and Concerns Greetings

Worship Through Giving: Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that every- thing we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

Worship Through Giving

GOD SPEAKS TO US Sermon Text

Mark 4: 21-34

21

And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and 22 not on a stand? For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret 23 24 except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and 25 still more will be added to you. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” 26

27

And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He 28 sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The 29 earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” 30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we 31 use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the 32 smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.” 33

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

The Sermon: Some view the Sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spiritʼs leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

GOD STRENGTHENS US *Prayer of Supplication From Luke 8, Mark 4, 1 John 3:1-9. Revelation 21:5, Isaiah 40:3-5

Leader:

Heavenly Father, You have taught us that Your Kingdom is like a seed planted deep within us, growing to bring greater wholeness and healing— making all things new. But from where we sit, all we see is the dirt where your promises lie buried. We see the dark clouds overhead; we see the earth that is barren with loneliness, with apathy and with the suffering of your children aching for your Kingdom that cannot come soon enough. We pray now for the many ways that we await your wholeness and healing. In Your mercy, Lord:

All:

Hear our prayer.

Leader:

Lord Jesus, help us to believe your word—that we are the soil where your promises lie hidden. You are the firstborn of all creation, and You have called us sons and heirs with your son. And so together we groan in frustration as we await the green shoots and ripe fruits of your Kingdom. Let them become as real on earth as they are in heaven. We pray now for the ways our world groans, awaiting your reign of peace. In Your mercy, Lord:

All:

Hear our prayer.

Leader:

Holy Spirit, awaken our imaginations to see your work here on earth that is more real than the fears and doubts we experience. Lead your church to the places in this world where our hands and our words can mend what is broken and heal what is wounded. Give us the eyes of faith to see that day when every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and your glory will be revealed and all flesh shall see it together. Let your Kingdom come, O Lord, we pray.

All:

Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving & Consecration

Guidelines for Communion: Communion, also called the Lordʼs Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. Please note: we use wine. White grape Juice is in the center cups of the trays.

Leader:

The Lord be with you.

All:

And also with you.

Leader:

Lift up your hearts.

All:

We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader:

Let us give thanks to our God.
