Fourth Sunday in Lent April 3, 2011

To Our Guests: If you are new to Cityview, or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards (called “Connection Cards”) at the end of each aisle. These are a way for you to both communicate with us and to request information about Cityview. Connection cards come with a “no hassle” guarantee- we will not call you unless you specifically ask us. However, if you request information, the appropriate ministry leader will get in touch with you.

Our Purpose: You might be wondering, “Whatʼs this church all about?” At Cityview, we keep it simple: We are imperfect people that gather together in response to the grace of Jesus Christ. We are committed to worshiping God, loving each other well and serving the West Loop, the city of Chicago and the world.

The Liturgical Year The Liturgical Year, also known as the Christian year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons that determines, in Christian churches, when celebrations, memorials, commemorations, and solemnities are to be observed. The liturgical year follows the story of Godʼs redemption through Christ and is intended as a pedagogical aid for Christian discipleship- as the story of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ is modeled year after year. The year begins with Advent, moves into Christmas, through Epiphany, and arrives at Lent, which is a season of preparation for Easter. At the end of Lent is what is known as the Great Triduum (the three great days)- which are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday Easter Vigil. The story reaches its climax at Easter, which lasts fifty days and ends at Pentecost. After Pentecost, we enter Ordinary Time or the Trinity Season, during which the Church is to focus on living the Gospel in day-to-day life.

The Lenten Season What does Lent mean? Lent is a 40-day period before Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday (this year, March 9th). We donʼt count Sundays because they are ʻfeastʼ days, commemorating the Resurrection. Lent is a season of soul-searching, repentance and reflection. This tradition originated in the early Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when Christʼs followers sought to rededicate themselves to obedience, sacrifice and acts of service. At the heart of any worthy Lenten observance is a cultivated attitude of repentance and sorrow. A true repentance means a genuine change in heart and mind, a change of disposition where ever in our lives we need to return to God. That is why true repentance can never be satisfied by mere external observances, no matter how rigorous they are. Repentance is no morbid introspection or “guilt trip” in which we become bound up in ourselves, turned inward to the point of unhealthy despair. Rather, it has a holy and compassionate God as its focus. Therefore, Christian repentance always means faith in God, trusting him, responding to his grace. That is why whatever guilt or sorrow we may feel does not crush us, but rather brings us closer to the truth of Godʼs goodness toward His children.

Prayers for Reflection: (These prayers are available for personal reflection and prayer during or after the service.)

Prayer for Those Searching for Truth

Prayer of Belief

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserve in order to offer me complete forgiveness. I know that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you – the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Order of Worship

Prelude Preparing in Stillness “For our ancestors, sin described a pattern of life that was simply destructive. It destroyed families, friendships, happiness, peace of mind, innocence, love, security, nature, and most importantly, our bond to our creator. It wrenched us out of our proper place in the world. It put the word out of joint, skewing everything and spreading misery and pain everywhere.” – Graham Tomlin

Preparing in Stillness: We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we often are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read these reflections, look over the rest of the service, or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

“We donʼt mind being seen as angry or lustful or even lazy, but we dislike being seen as envious. It is unattractive. And our vanities superseded our virtues some time ago.” -– Zadie Smith

GOD CALLS US *Call to Worship Leader:

The eternal Father, who loved us and set us free from our sins, who loves us still with that love that will not let us go, and who will love us forever, calls us to worship him today as the only true lover of our souls. The Lord stoops to receive the love of our poor hearts. He calls us to remember the depth of his love for us in Christ. God seeks our love.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving Leader:

Grant unto us, O heavenly Father, that the remembrance of our redemption may never leave our hearts, but that we may walk in Christ, the Light of the world, far removed from our foolish reason and blind wills, which are vain and injurious darkness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All:

Almighty God, heavenly Father, we give You eternal praise and thanks that You have been so gracious unto us poor sinners, having drawn us to your Son our Lord Jesus, whom You have delivered to death for us and given to be our nourishment and our dwelling unto eternal life.

Leader:

Grant that we may never relinquish these things from our hearts, but ever grow and increase in faith to You, which, through love, is effective of all good works. And so may our whole life be devoted to your praise and the edification of our neighbor; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord.

All:

Amen.

3

Call to Worship: We need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

How Deep the Fatherʼs Love Words and Music: Stuart Townend

1. How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measureThat He would give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure.

3. I will not boast in anythingNo gifts, no powr's, no wisdomBut I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.

How great the pain of searing loss, Why should I gain from His reward? The Father turns His face away; I cannot give an answer; As wounds which mar the chosen One But this I know with all my heartI54.-7NH0?,-6 Bring many sons to glory. His wounds have paid my ransom

2. Behold the Man upon a cross, My guilt upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there, Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me lifeI know that it is finished

GOD CLEANSES US *Prayer of Confession All:

Confession of Sin: Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

We confess that we are in bondage to sin, and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your son, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

. Assurance of Grace: Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his Name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

*Words of Assurance Leader:

God, who is faithful and just, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister in the church of Christ, I declare to you the forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and the son, and the Holy Spirit.

All:

Amen.

Leader:

Brothers and Sisters, you have heard Godʼs holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you?

We do.

*Prayers of the People *The Lordʼs Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

Opportunities and Concerns Greetings

Worship Through Giving: Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that every- thing we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

Worship Through Giving GOD SPEAKS TO US Sermon Text

Genesis 4: 1-14

1

Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She 2 said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. 3

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some 4 of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his 5 offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. 6

7

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” 8

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Letʼs go out to the field.” Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. 9

[d]

While they were in the field,

Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I donʼt know,” he replied. “Am I my brotherʼs keeper?”

10

The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brotherʼs blood cries out to me from 11 the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its 12 mouth to receive your brotherʼs blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” 13

14

Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” Leader: All:

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! The Problem of Envy Reverend Shayne Wheeler- Pastor of All Souls Fellowship, Decatur, GA

7

The Sermon: Some view the Sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spiritʼs leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

GOD STRENGTHENS US *Confession of Faith

Hippolytus始 Baptismal Creed (Hippolytus was a theologian and bishop around Rome, martyred on August 12, 235)

Leader:

Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?

All:

We believe.

Leader:

Do you believe in Christ Jesus, the Son of God, who was born of the Virgin Mary, and was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and was dead and buried, and rose again the third day, alive from the dead, and ascended into heaven, and sat at the right hand of the Father, and will come to judge the living and the dead?

All:

We believe.

Leader:

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, in the holy church, and the resurrection of the body?

All:

We believe.

Prayer of Thanksgiving & Consecration

Guidelines for Communion: Communion, also called the Lord始s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. Please note: we use wine. White grape Juice is in the center cups of the trays.

Leader:

The Lord be with you.

All:

And also with you.

Leader:

Lift up your hearts.

All:

We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader:

Let us give thanks to our God.

All:

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Communion *Communion Prayer All:

Almighty God, whose Son did not enter glory before he was crucified, we thank you for sustaining us through his sacrifice. Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it is the way of life and peace for us, for our neighborhoods, and for our world, through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord. Amen.

8

*Hymn of Benediction

Rock of Ages Words: Augustus Toplady Music: Thomas Hastings

*Benediction Leader:

May God the Father give you a contrite heart; may Christ heal you by his wounds; and may the Spirit speak to you words of pardon and peace; and the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

All:

Amen.

*Dismissal Leader:

Let us go now to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

All:

Thanks be to God!

9

The Benediction: God always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.
