After almost half a century serving the travel and tourism market across multiple states, this will be the final edition of City Visitor Communications. As the founder of City Visitor publications, it has always been my top priority to deliver the most credible dining and shopping guide that introduced visitors and tourists to the best our community had to offer. At the age of 27, I identified the need for visitors to have a quality guide to the area and I setout to help business owners, restaurant owners and tourist attractions reach the over “million” visitors that come to our area each year. The City Visitor team worked tirelessly to provide trustworthy information, quality images and graphics to highlight our town. I am grateful for the team who shared my vision and who served our customers with such dedication over 42 years. City Visitor Communications went on to seed nine additional businesses in travel and relocation, including a public offering in 1997. As with every journey, I faced challenges over the 42-years, but nothing compares to the joy I feel knowing that we did our best, every day, to serve our customers and readers. I feel joy knowing that this journey positively impacted so many people, businesses, and our communities. Here is to the journey ahead.

CRUCIAL CLEVELAND Popular with visitors and locals alike, the Cleveland script signs provide six unique views of the city. Before the Republican National Convention in 2016, three Cleveland script signs were installed in different places so the influx of visitors could capture images to remember their time here. Since those first installments, three more signs have been added, including one inside the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Each of the five outdoor locations offers an impressive skyline backdrop.

Museum Walk:

Uptown and University Circle Put on your sneakers and take a 1.4-mile walking tour through Cleveland’s world-famous cultural hub. Two distinct neighborhoods on Cleveland’s east side, about 10 minutes from downtown, weave through the campus of Case Western Reserve University, the trendy Uptown district and historic University Circle. Uptown is a lively half-mile stretch along Euclid Avenue and University Circle features a ring of world-class museums around the beautifully landscaped Wade Oval.

Begin at the east end of Uptown, at The Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA), one of the nation’s leading independent colleges of art and design. Here, the Reinberger Gallery is free and open to the public, offering visitors the chance to view unique creative works by students, alumni and professional artists. CIA is also where you’ll find Cinematheque, an alternative film theater showing classic, foreign and independent films often not shown anywhere else. A three-minute walk heading west on Euclid brings you to Cleveland’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Cleveland), which is also admission-free. The museum has presented the works of more

than 2,000 artists, including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichenstein. But you don’t have to go inside before being impressed. The building, a trapezoidal structure sheathed in reflective black stainless steel, is mesmerizing in itself. Even more impressive is the giant hand sculpture, standing over 20 feet high, on the plaza next to the museum. (11400 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland 44106; 216.421.8671)

3 Continue heading west on Euclid to the majestic Severance Hall. This marks the first stop on the University Circle portion of the tour. This architectural gem isn’t a museum, but it is one of the nation’s premier concert halls and the home of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra. The main lobby and auditorium are closed except during performances, but the giant stone steps in front are the perfect place for a selfie and a lovely view of Wade Oval Lagoon. 4 Gaze across the lagoon you’ll spot your next stop, the magnificent Cleveland Museum of Art. A short walk along East Boulevard leads you to Wade Oval Drive and this nationally acclaimed institution. The museum is admission-free, and its 30,000-piece collection includes original paintings by Rembrandt, Renoir, Picasso, Dali, Warhol and many more. Leaving the front entrance of CMA, continue left around Wade Oval until you see “Steggie,” the giant stegosaurus sculpture that lets you know you’ve reached the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Massive dinosaur skeletons, a hall of sparkling gemstones, an earthquake machine and “Lucy,” the famous 3.2-million-year-old human ancestor fossil, are among the biggest draws. There’s also the Ralph Perkins II Wildlife Center and Woods Garden, where rescued and rehabilitated coyotes, river otters, bald eagles, a porcupine and dozens of other native Ohio animals can be viewed. A short walk along Wade Oval Drive to the left takes you to the corner of East Boulevard and E. 108th, where a 105-yearold carousel is visible inside a glasswalled building. This joyful relic of simpler times welcomes you to the Cleveland History Center of the Western Reserve Historical Society, a museum filled with fun and unusual artifacts telling the story of Cleveland’s past. The museum houses everything from the gondola of the “Spirit of Goodyear” blimp to LeBron James’s size-15 sneakers. It’s also the site of the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, a vast collection of classic cars, carriages, motorcycles and racing planes. (10825 East Boulevard, Cleveland 44106; 216.721.5722)

Finally, head back to Wade Oval and cross the lawn to the ever-changing urban escape known as the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Here you’ll discover exquisite, awardwinning outdoor gardens and an exotic greenhouse with two distinct biomes: a Madagascan desert and a Costa Rican rainforest. It’s a delight for the senses and a relaxing end to your urban journey. The dual focus of Canton Museum of Art’s permanent collection is 19th- and 20th century American works on paper, with a concentration in watercolors and contemporary ceramics, 1950's and forward. See works by Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, John Marin, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, John Singer Sargent, Thomas Hart Benton and many other famous artists. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a year-round hot spot and the only National Park in Ohio. With stunning natural features carved by glaciers and the Cuyahoga River, the park offers numerous hiking trails, many with spectacular waterfalls. The Pro Football Hall of Fame now has 118,000 square feet of world-class exhibit space following a recent expansion of Canton’s “crown jewel.” The exhibits, many of which are interactive, celebrate pro football’s history and modern-day era and include historic uniforms worn by past greats, bronze busts of Hall of Fame Inductees, and all 52 Super Bowl rings. The collection is ever-changing. Recent additions include the jersey worn by Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson when he became the first player to record 50 interceptions and 20 sacks during a career; the football that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning threw for his record-breaking 509th touchdown; and the jerseys worn by Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer and receiver Travis Benjamin during the biggest road comeback in NFL history. TRAILS: 1. Bike & Hike Trail runs for 34 miles through Cuyahoga, Portage and Summit counties. This asphalt-paved trail follows old rail lines and passes alongside beautiful natural areas, including 65 foot tall Brandywine Falls. Restroom facilities are ample, though you may want to stock up on water and pack some snacks before heading out for the day. The nearby Canton and Stark County, Ohio region boasts numerous activities and dining options. There are world-class museums, national historic sites, and a presidential monument, just to start the list of reasons to visit. Canton is often best recognized as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the birthplace of the National Football League. On September 17, 1920, the owners of eleven football franchises attended a meeting in Canton, Ohio to formalize a league, the American Professional Football Association. Two years later, at an owners meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, the two-year-old league created a constitution that officially changed its name to the National Football League.

At the city’s center, discover the new Centennial Plaza, completed in 2020 and constructed in celebration of the 100th birthday of the NFL. At the park, you can view the names of every player that played in the first 100 seasons of the league displayed on the eleven NFL 100 Year Player Recognition Steles. The Pro Football Hall of Fame manages the venue in partnership with the city of Canton, with a regular slate of events and activities open to the public. There’s also a small café on the property and an abundance of unique, local, and delicious dining options in the small, walkable downtown. There are also plenty of live music venues and a full calendar of concerts and events, not only in Downtown Canton but throughout Stark County. Plans for the greenhouse first began in 1902, and in 1905, the first units of the greenhouse were built on land donated by John D. Rockefeller. In the beginning, the city only used the greenhouse for the purpose of growing plants that would be used for landscaping parks and gardens within the city. Now, Rockefeller Park Greenhouse is also an attraction for visitors, including specialty plant collections, theme gardens and seasonal flower displays, like chrysanthemums in the fall or poinsettias for the holidays.

The Hope Memorial Bridge, named after Clevelander Bob Hope, with its “Guardians of Traffic” spans the Cuyahoga River. It connects Lorain Avenue on Cleveland's west side and Carnegie Avenue on the east side, ending a few hundred feet from Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians.
