It has been a wonderful 42-year journey! Enriching the Visitor Experience in Northeast Ohio since 1980

After almost half a century serving the travel and tourism market across multiple states, this will be the final edition of City Visitor Communications. As the founder of City Visitor publications, it has always been my top priority to deliver the most credible dining and shopping guide that introduced visitors and tourists to the best our community had to offer. At the age of 27, I identified the need for visitors to have a quality guide to the area and I setout to help business owners, restaurant owners and tourist attractions reach the over “million” visitors that come to our area each year. The City Visitor team worked tirelessly to provide trustworthy information, quality images and graphics to highlight our town. I am grateful for the team who shared my vision and who served our customers with such dedication over 42 years. City Visitor Communications went on to seed nine additional businesses in travel and relocation, including a public offering in 1997. As with every journey, I faced challenges over the 42-years, but nothing compares to the joy I feel knowing that we did our best, every day, to serve our customers and readers. I feel joy knowing that this journey positively impacted so many people, businesses, and our communities. Here is to the journey ahead.

CRUCIAL CLEVELAND Popular with visitors and locals alike, the Cleveland script signs provide six unique views of the city. Before the Republican National Convention in 2016, three Cleveland script signs were installed in different places so the influx of visitors could capture images to remember their time here. Since those first installments, three more signs have been added, including one inside the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Each of the five outdoor locations offers an impressive skyline backdrop.
1 At the E. 9th Street Pier and behind the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is one of the most popular Cleveland script signs. Stop for a photo after a trip to the Rock Hall! North Coast Harbor, 1001 E. 9th Street

Museum Walk:
Uptown and University Circle Put on your sneakers and take a 1.4-mile walking tour through Cleveland’s world-famous cultural hub. Two distinct neighborhoods on Cleveland’s east side, about 10 minutes from downtown, weave through the campus of Case Western Reserve University, the trendy Uptown district and historic University Circle. Uptown is a lively half-mile stretch along Euclid Avenue and University Circle features a ring of world-class museums around the beautifully landscaped Wade Oval.

Begin at the east end of Uptown, at The Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA), one of the nation’s leading independent colleges of art and design. Here, the Reinberger Gallery is free and open to the public, offering visitors the chance to view unique creative works by students, alumni and professional artists. CIA is also where you’ll find Cinematheque, an alternative film theater showing classic, foreign and independent films often not shown anywhere else. A three-minute walk heading west on Euclid brings you to Cleveland’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA Cleveland), which is also admission-free. The museum has presented the works of more
than 2,000 artists, including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichenstein. But you don’t have to go inside before being impressed. The building, a trapezoidal structure sheathed in reflective black stainless steel, is mesmerizing in itself. Even more impressive is the giant hand sculpture, standing over 20 feet high, on the plaza next to the museum. (11400 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland 44106; 216.421.8671)
3 Continue heading west on Euclid to the majestic Severance Hall. This marks the first stop on the University Circle portion of the tour. This architectural gem isn’t a museum, but it is one of the nation’s premier concert halls and the home of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra. The main lobby and auditorium are closed except during performances, but the giant stone steps in front are the perfect place for a selfie and a lovely view of Wade Oval Lagoon. (11001 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland 44106; 216.231.1111) Severance Hall / Photo: Larry E. Highbaugh Jr.
4 Gaze across the lagoon you’ll spot your next stop, the magnificent Cleveland Museum of Art. A short walk along East Boulevard leads you to Wade Oval Drive and this nationally acclaimed institution. The museum is admission-free, and its 30,000-piece collection includes original paintings by Rembrandt, Renoir, Picasso, Dali, Warhol and many more. (11150 East Boulevard, Cleveland 44106; 216.421.7350) CV Inside, the light-filled atrium and the Provenance Tip Café offer a great place to refresh and recharge.
The Cleveland Museum of Art's original entrance (from 1916) faces Wade Oval and the lagoon.
5
Leaving the front entrance of CMA, continue left around Wade Oval until you see “Steggie,” the giant stegosaurus sculpture that lets you know you’ve reached the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Massive dinosaur skeletons, a hall of sparkling gemstones, an earthquake machine and “Lucy,” the famous 3.2-million-year-old human ancestor fossil, are among the biggest draws. There’s also the Ralph Perkins II Wildlife Center and Woods Garden, where rescued and rehabilitated coyotes, river otters, bald eagles, a porcupine and dozens of other native Ohio animals can be viewed. (1 Wade Oval, Cleveland 44106; 216.231.4600) Continued on next page City Visitor 9

Rides on the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel are included with each admission.
A short walk along Wade Oval Drive to the left takes you to the corner of East Boulevard and E. 108th, where a 105-yearold carousel is visible inside a glasswalled building. This joyful relic of simpler times welcomes you to the Cleveland History Center of the Western Reserve Historical Society, a museum filled with fun and unusual artifacts telling the story of Cleveland’s past. The museum houses everything from the gondola of the “Spirit of Goodyear” blimp to LeBron James’s size-15 sneakers. It’s also the site of the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, a vast collection of classic cars, carriages, motorcycles and racing planes. (10825 East Boulevard, Cleveland 44106; 216.721.5722)
7
Finally, head back to Wade Oval and cross the lawn to the ever-changing urban escape known as the Cleveland Botanical Garden. Here you’ll discover exquisite, awardwinning outdoor gardens and an exotic greenhouse with two distinct biomes: a Madagascan desert and a Costa Rican rainforest. It’s a delight for the senses and a relaxing end to your urban journey. (11030 East Boulevard, Cleveland 44106; 216.721.1600) If you’re short on time or energy, take advantage Tip of CircleLink, a free shuttle service that operates throughout the area. visit larchmere.com for more information The Larchmere district, a federally designated historic district, begins at East 120th Street and extends east to North Moreland Boulevard. About six miles from downtown Cleveland, you will find 10 blocks of shops, galleries, antique stores, service enterprises, restaurants and public art such as colorful bike racks reminiscent of classic wooden chair styles (think Queen Anne, Shaker and Bentwood) and playful murals on the sides of otherwise ordinary brick buildings. This urban oasis is found along the boulevard known as Larchmere, home to 30 eclectic businesses and popular community events, making it one of the area’s most entertaining destinations. Check out Loganberry Books, an independently owned and operated bookstore with a huge selection including a little bit of everything. Visitors will find leather bound and decorative bindings, mostly from 1880-1920, though some are even older. High ceilings, natural light and warm rugs provide an air of comfort and coziness throughout this home to about 100,000 volumes. Extensive sections devoted to children’s literature and modern literature, art, design, the performing arts, the sciences, history and a wonderful array of knickknacks. While many patrons simply love to stroll the stacks at Loganberry, the shop offers much more than a typical bookstore. There are book signings and other author events; discussion groups and book clubs; and open mics and music events. And don’t miss the Loganberry Books Annex Gallery, which features a monthly rotation of local artists and their work, including painting, photography, ceramics, collage and beyond. 24 City Visitor

The Hall of Fame City
The William McKinley National Memorial is a landmark in the city of Canton.
The Forgotten Four memorializes the re-integration of pro sports.
The Draft, by artist Gail Folwell, recognizes the creation of the NFL Draft.
The nearby Canton and Stark County, Ohio region boasts numerous activities and dining options. There are world-class museums, national historic sites, and a presidential monument, just to start the list of reasons to visit. Add to that list of reasons, a wide selection of top-quality, public golf courses in what has been deemed “Ohio’s Golf Capital!”, along with a variety of award-winning craft breweries or “Hall of Fame Hops”, wineries and a distillery. As if those were not enough reasons to have you well on your way to visiting, there is at least one more reason to navigate to Canton. Many people have it on their bucket list of must-see places, the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
history. The re-integration of pro sports by The Forgotten Four is another moment memorialized in art in Downtown Canton.
include Downtown Canton, the largest at 69 acres, as well as Canal Fulton, Louisville and even a couple more in the works! The outdoor refreshment areas are great while enjoying special events like First Fridays each month in Downtown Canton, the Louisville Farmer’s Markets on Friday evenings, or while exploring the great outdoors in Canal Fulton along the Ohio & Erie Canal National Heritage Area and Towpath Trail.
Canton is often best recognized as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the birthplace of the National Football League. On September 17, 1920, the owners of eleven football franchises attended a meeting in Canton, Ohio to formalize a league, the American Professional Football Association. Two years later, at an owners meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, the two-year-old league created a constitution that officially changed its name to the National Football League.
At the city’s center, discover the new Centennial Plaza, completed in 2020 and constructed in celebration of the 100th birthday of the NFL. At the park, you can view the names of every player that played in the first 100 seasons of the league displayed on the eleven NFL 100 Year Player Recognition Steles. The Pro Football Hall of Fame manages the venue in partnership with the city of Canton, with a regular slate of events and activities open to the public. There’s also a small café on the property and an abundance of unique, local, and delicious dining options in the small, walkable downtown. There are also plenty of live music venues and a full calendar of concerts and events, not only in Downtown Canton but throughout Stark County. There are several designated outdoor refreshment areas in Stark County as well. The cities identify specific boundaries within which you are permitted to purchase an adult libation at participating businesses and stroll the streets, galleries, and shops. A sculpture, Birth of the NFL, marks the location where the NFL was founded, and another sculpture, The Draft, recognizes the creation of the NFL Draft as one of the greatest moments in the sport’s Visit The Still House, a coffeehouse and cocktail lounge, at Gervasi Vineyard. 34 City Visitor

Plans for the greenhouse first began in 1902, and in 1905, the first units of the greenhouse were built on land donated by John D. Rockefeller. In the beginning, the city only used the greenhouse for the purpose of growing plants that would be used for landscaping parks and gardens within the city. Now, Rockefeller Park Greenhouse is also an attraction for visitors, including specialty plant collections, theme gardens and seasonal flower displays, like chrysanthemums in the fall or poinsettias for the holidays.

n In 1920, gathered in a Canton auto dealership, a group of professional football owners founded the American Professional Football Conference. Two years later, they changed their name to the National Football League. Their president was former Canton Bulldog, Jim Thorpe (pictured above).
n The Tonight Show’s Jack Paar was born in Canton in 1918. n James Murray Spangler patented the first “Electric Suction Sweeper” in 1907, but it didn’t become popular until his first cousin’s husband, William “Boss” Hoover took over and the Hoover became an icon. OHIO AMISH COUNTRY
BRING BACK THE FAMILY ROADTRIP.
Or, Save the Day With a Love-Restoring Getaway! You decide your story. Every hill and curve promises adventure. You pass the county line sign and sense that buggies are near. Do you: Follow the dirt road down the driveway with a hand-painted sign for baskets and eggs? Follow the sporty AWD complete with kayaks and “trees-are-friends” bumper stickers? Follow your nose to discover the origin of that intriguing aroma reminiscent of apple? Every route leads to a new adventure. Which road will you take? There are no wrong choices in Ohio Amish Country. Pursue your day with vigorous spirit and know that you’ll make a memory. A turn down that drive to find baskets takes you to a chat with an Amish family weeding their produce patch. That sporty AWD leads you to the tree-tops for a zip-lining trip you’ll never forget. And the nose knows its apple pie. That smell carries you straight to the source of deliciousness where you sample the day away on pastries and pies. There’s a tale here for you. Load the kids onto a horse-drawn wagon ride through the hills to feed potbellied piggies or giraffes. Pick your own berries and pumpkins. Watch a magic show or tour a one-room Amish schoolhouse and country barn. Sample fresh-made chocolates or rank your favorite fry pie flavors. Bring your bikes for a ride along the rails-to-trails. Fish, tube, or float your way through a summer afternoon, or drop into town for a double dip of ice cream. Hike through the day or find a bench along the wetlands for bird watching. Museums dedicated to Amish history tell the fascinating story of the area. Or tour an Amish home and learn how the locals really live.
Family-style dinner and a stop at one of the many theaters is a perfect end to the day. There is plenty of entertainment for everyone! Looking for inspiration as you plan your next stay? Go to visitamishcountry.com and see all that awaits you in Amish Country. Visiting Ohio's Amish Country: Holmes County has one of the largest Amish settlements in the world. It is located about one hour south of Akron, midway between I-77 and I-71.
