Layer layer, layer It’s that time of the year when layers come into play and if done right, can look extremely chic. Winter layering can be a delicate art that can take some time to master. Shruti Tomar tells you how to be layer-friendly this season

L
ayering can take some amount of smart planning and a keen eye to bring together a cohesive ensemble. Some people do it as effortlessly as putting on a T-shirt and denims while some just pile it on. The trick to layering is all about balancing proportions by throwing in different silhouettes, how to not look dowdy by mixing prints and colours, how to put the constants to stylish use and most importantly, how to accessorise. When asked what the big fuss was about the layered look, designer Vera Wang had said, “Layering lends a certain nonchalance,” and it’s true. Take a look at Kate Moss or Olivia Palermo, it always seems like they just randomly threw a few clothes on and the
Denim shirts help the act of layering MANGO, `2,790
whole world is staring at them wondering where did they acquire that sense of style.
Layering and piling on
There is a difference and huge one between just wearing all that co-exists in your closet. You need to avoid looking like a homeless person. There is no one way to do it. Some say never do more than three layers with keeping the thinnest layer closest to your body, then another one over and then a coat or a jacket on top. Another suggestion in terms of layers is keep your bottom wear skinny, so either skinny trousers, legging or jeans to keep that part of the body slim while layer away at the top. Heels complete the trick.

Mix and match
Don’t be wary of clashing styles and contradictions in your clothing pieces. It’s what makes layering all the more interesting. You can wear a T-shirt or a classic office blouse with to which you can add an unbuttoned shirt, say denim with studs and a cardigan, vest or blazer on top. Belt it all in style and an overcoat or a scarf will complete the look. Another look that can be easily done is sport a cropped jumper and a longer T-shirt, blouse or shirt underneath with rolled up sleeves and an embellished collar; effortlessly edgy and glam at the same time.
Layering tactics
You can also ditch the fashion rules and go over the top with two jackets or coats. How,

you ask? Take a fur vest that looks ultra posh and a leather jacket, coat or any other outerwear you have. Alternatively, a denim or biker jacket will look great under a structured coat. Just ensure it does not look too bulky and complements your body type. Then go ahead and mix and match pieces from different sensibilities. A silk top, a hoodie, jeans or trousers, a leather jacket, a sporty cap, a cool bag, heels, tons of accessories and a scarf will make you look like one of those off-duty models. If you are feeling a tad radical, layer a skirt on top of skinny trouser. Then again, if extreme layering is not your cuppa, stick to the basics. Leggings and loose-fitted tops, lots of neck pieces, a blazer and scarf complete the look. Layers are simple elements put together artistically. Just remember not to overdo it.

How to wear this look •S kinny jeans - A pair of skinny jeans in a goeswith-anything colour like a black or dark blue is a must. In a rush, tuck them into a swanky pair of boots. Style them with cute ballerinas and a leather jacket. For a night about town, pair it with a flowy top and pointed heels. •A well-fitted sweater – A crew-neck sweater with a shirt that has the collars and sleeves peeping out is a great go-to style. This wardrobe
mainstay can also be teamed with skirts, printed trousers, shorts and even leather pants! •A long-sleeve T-shirt – This easy-to-style T-shirt is versatile and can be worn at any time of the year. Wear with wide-leg pants or under a chunky sweater. •A pop-coloured jacket – Your outer wear is what hits the eyes first. So, why not make a statement with it. Throw on a bright coloured jacket to add some fun to a neutral-hued outfit.
•K nee-high boots – This spells warm and chic, two things essential to a winter look. Flat boots are great for a day out shopping while stacked heels are great for dressy dos. •A knit sweater-dress – Sick of wearing pants? Try a sweater dress. Whether it’s form-fitting or relaxed, team it with a printed scarf and boots. •A printed scarf – Printed, textured, plain, bright-coloured, striped, checkered, have a few in your wardrobe to play around with.

The great
COVER-UP An oversized coat from the Blumarine Fall-Winter, 2013-14 collection
The chill in the air is official. Summer is over and it is time to swap all the summer fare for the winter one. This fall/winter it is all about the outerwear. Top designers like Céline, Stella McCartney and Carven sent their best jackets and coats sashaying down the 2013 runways leaving us salivating for one of our own. Shruti Tomar rounds up the coat trends for this season
T
he motto this season for coats is the bigger, the better. If you prefer wool, fur or leather, this musthave weather protector runs the gamut between feminine, classic, bold and trendy this winter. Blushed hues, stolen from the boys department and over the top sizes, winter’s staple garment moves on from being a necessary evil to being a very fashionable accoutrement. From oversized and billowing to sharply structured ones, from toggle coats, trenches and leather jackets to richly coloured, pale and interesting, from boyish to womanly in colours like rose pink and winter white, there is one for all. Watch out for the shapes to note and see how the trend played out on the catwalks..
Trend watch Oversize coat with lapels and belt, ZARA, `14,990
The trends are aplenty to choose from. Sleeveless which may not be the most practical of choices but it makes up for the lack of warmth with its utter elegance. Scour out the runway collections where bright colours and bow fastenings are transporting the coat from outerwear to evening wear. The tomboy look is also trending at the moment. Sporty bombers, parkas in grungy colours, tough-guy zip details, deep pockets and wide hoods lend a relaxed, uber-cool street spin to the winter shenanigans.
Oversized in style
Oversize matters but do not mistake it for borrowed –from-theboyfriend bagginess. Soft curved shoulders, structured shapes and luxe cashmere brings these cocooning silhouettes a new feminine feel. It’s the absolute breakout trends in coats this fall/ winter. From Michael Kors to Mulberry, everyone is cashing in on the loose, boxy shape which in spite of premature judgment looks sexy as well as feminine. Simply do what Blumarine did for their fall 2013 collection, belt it at the waist and show off your
22

curves. Without the belt too, the large coat looks great and effortlessly voguish.
In the trenches
The trench coat is a continuing stylish staple. They never go out of style but this season it’s taken a new avatar. One will see the trench in two-tones, leather-infused, colourful trims and bold prints. How’s that for a new take on the usual staidhued trench! It has been invented, finally, to suit everyone’s style palate. Sport the trench combined with the various cool weather looks this winter. (Top and bottom) Smart trench coats by Burberry
The leather motto
Leather motorcycle jackets, sporty bombers and chic mannish coats spell edgy and look great. The classic leather motorcycle jacket or the leather motto is your go-to style for late nights into the early morning. Take this style a notch above and pair it with girly silhouettes, like a dress or a skirt, top up the chunky accessories and don those spiky heels and you should be set for your night about town. The bomber jacket can also be worn with just about anything from leggings and a baggy sweater combination to a ball gown. More importantly, these jackets usually came in colours like black, tan and brown, but not anymore. Take your pick from emerald green and ocean blue while playing with textures like faux leather and lambskin.
Pink lady
Trendy black and denim jacket, KAZO, `3,990
(Above) A rounded jacket from the M. Patmos’ FallWinter 2013-14 collection and (above left) a smart casual leather jacket
For the girlie in you, light pink, pale pink, rose pink are the sought-after colours, especially in the coats section. Everyone and their mother-in-law went cuckoo this season over the pale-pink oversized coat at Céline’s Fall/Winter collection while Oscar de la Renta took to the bubblegum hue on cropped jackets and Rochas experimented with pastel colours on their wool blend coats. It’s a rosy outlook for outerwear this season with feminine iterations in peony and blush. Trendsetter Ashley Olsen was seen wearing an oversized candy floss coat teamed with jeans, tortoise-shell sunglasses and flats – now there’s a truly chic and well-put together outfit.
Coated styles
Another trend that has also made an impact is the parka. Army green parkas have been capturing the attention of the fashionforward in this military fashion moment. Capes are also on a crusade this season with cropped capes that are demure yet daring in vampy oxblood or even better, if it’s in leather! Winter whites with edgy details and streamlined structures mean business and boast of being anything but soft. The classic camel coat had made a fashionable comeback this season in sun baked shades of tan and caramel. Menswear inspired tweed married to feminine silhouettes make for the perfect sartorial romance. This fall is screaming texture and don’t wait to cosy up in the latest fuzzy and furry looks. Start warming up with this season’s toppers that are coming in all shapes, colours and sizes. Let the great cover up commence.

SCARVED IN STYLE Scarves are a must-have in your winter wardrobe. They can take any outfit from boring to stylish in a jiffy. With an accessory as versatile as a scarf, the ways to wear it are also numerous. Here are four different ways to wear the scarf stylishly.
1. Short and sweet Wear the scarf around your neck and keep the left side of it slightly shorter than the right. Now, cross the right side over and start tying a knot without pulling the right side completely. It is now an incomplete knot with both ends uneven giving it a stylish twist. After this, you need to drape the portion that’s pulled out over the knot to make it look like a half bow. You could dress up this look with a huge brooch on top of the draped portion. Striped fingerless gloves ACCESSORIZE, `2,445
2. Pretty in Pashmina Fold your Pashmina in half. Place the centre at the front of your neck and drape the ends over your back. Zigzag the ends and bring it to the front of your neck. Make a loose knot at the front and insert it under the wrapped portion of the pashmina, keep the upper portion loose. Flatten the ends over the chest as much as you can so that it’s less fluffy. Softly pull the top layer down to cover the knot. It will now look like a loose turtleneck top teamed with a scarf. Put these furry woollies on and have some fun! Gloves ACCESSORIZE, `1,795
3. Artistic twists Put the scarf around your neck keeping both sides of the same length. Use the right side of your scarf and loosely tie a knot in the centre of that side. Now, take the left side and simply thread it through the knot. Tighten this knot. This look works great for casual wear. You could wear it with an overcoat but in that case, tie the knot closer to your neck or you could make the knot even lower on the scarf and wear it as an accessory to your ensemble.

One of the simplest and extremely popular styles is the European way of wearing it. Fold your scarf into half making a fold at one end and two loose ends on the other side. Drape the centre portion of the scarf around your neck while the two ends of the left side and a loop on the right side each face forward. Push these two loose ends through the loop and make it tight for it to sit well. Tried and tested knots are a sure shot way to keeping it stylish.

Santa’s
secrets
Christmas, all over the world, represents the festival of joy and gift-giving. But how much do we really know about the origins of the simple customs and time-honoured traditions that encompass the spirit of the festival?
C
hristmas is that time of the year when bonhomie and merriment fills the air. Many of us do not know where the little rites and rituals that surround this festival come from. Read on to learn more about Christmas and its happy customs.
Christmas
Christmas, as we know, came out of the Roman tradition of Saturnalia, a festival that revered their god of agriculture, Saturn, on the winter solstice. Given that this date was already celebrated in a huge way, it was only natural to celebrate the birth of Christ on the same date.
Gifting
Legend has it that the custom of gifts began with the three wise man, who visited baby Jesus and gave gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold. It is said the actual origin of gift giving comes from the Pagan beliefs. During Saturnalia, kids were given wax dolls as gifts often although this act had a ghastly history attached to it. Boughs of specific trees and plant matter were also usual gifts during the festival of Saturnalia and symbolised good harvests and bounty.
X-mas
The ‘X’ in X-mas represents the Greek letter Chi, the first letter of

Carols
the Greek word for Christ. The word Xmas has been in use from the 16th century, although it gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Stockings
The origin of this custom comes from Saint Nicholas and his donations back in the 4th century. Saint Nicholas asserted that childhood has to be enjoyed and back then, children under 10 worked for survival. So he gave out food, clothes, furniture and even oranges. What posed as a problem was where to leave these gifts and then he saw girls’ stocking hung above the fireplace and good ol’ Saint Nicholas thought why not? Apart from this legend, in Scandinavian countries, children would leave their shoes full of carrots, straw etc for Odin’s mythical horse, Sleipnir. When Sleipnir gobbled all the food, Odin left candies and other goodies in the shoes.
Wreaths
Since time immemorial, the wreath has meant strength and power. It was worn as a crown in ancient Rome and Greece. Since wreaths represented might and everlasting life, it was
used in funerals of eminent people, more so in the burials of saints.
Trees
The contemporary Christmas tree is vastly different from its origins. Today, the tree is artificial and is decorated with shimmering embellishments and vivid lights. Back in the olden days, the tree was dotted with edible items like nuts and apples. This custom, similar to that of the wreaths, also began with the elements that evergreens symbolised in pre-Christian winter festivals; resolute endurance and immortality. The evergreen has also been known to have similar meanings in different cultures. Traditionally, the trees were adorned in December to keep the devil away and to serve as a perch for the birds that were around in the winters.
Christmas carols came from the early Christmas hymns that were from 4th century Rome. These hymns were sung in churches for a long time, but the first actual carols were developed in Germany, Italy and France during the 13th century. They were written in the local language and were popular at festivals and community dos. At a later stage, the songs came to be associated with Christmas and they were sung at churches. The ritual of going from door-to-door probably has its meaning in the roots of carol or ‘carula’ which means a circular dance.
Santa Claus
According to popular belief, the legendary Santa Claus’ roots come from Saint Nicholas, the giving Saint who gave gifts to needy kids. At the same time, a lot of other stories also evolved as regards to the origin of the happy Santa. One says that the Dutch Sinterklass, who was also based on Saint Nicholas, was the primary inspiration behind Santa Claus. Identical to Santa, he also dons red and white, is aware of you being nice or naughty and has elf helpers. Odin was also known to be a possible Pagan stimulus for Santa.

A gentleman’s
wardrobe
As fashion trends change for women around the year, they do so for men too but there are some things that are a must-have all the year round. Shruti Tomar curates the essentials that are a necessity in any man’s wardrobe
T
here are must-haves for a man’s wardrobe that are sacrilege to immaculate dressing. It is essential that man own this list to aid him look effortlessly stylish at all times.
Denim
When buying denims for yourself, always remember three things. Buy one that fits you well and suits your body type. It shouldn’t be too loose or too tight. Second, it you are new to wearing jeans, take a second opinion. Do not blindly follow fads. Thirdly, own a few pairs of denims. Get a pair of light washed denims, a standard wash one and a dark wash or navy pair.
Follow suit
This is a must-have in your wardrobe. Whether you are attending a formal event, a job interview or have simply grown up, own one. You are going to need it at some point and you will have to swap that Metallica T-shirt and distressed denims for a blazer and a pair of trousers. A few that we suggest are a navy sport coat, tan khakis, a brown belt, a white button-down formal shirt, dress shoes or loafers and more importantly, a tie or a bow-tie. You can show your distinctiveness with a tie or a bow-tie and make that the focal point of your outfit.
Time to change (Clockwise from top left) The waistcoat is back in the game as are bow ties. Don a waistcoat for this super casual look with light-wash denims, a checkered shirt, belt and slip-on shoes. A leather flap bag or satchel will add just the right amount of ‘cool’ to this look; These slip-ons are easy to wear and look great too.
44
nov-dec 13
If you have never possessed a watch before, now is the time. Also, time to abandon those plastic straps. In the world outside, a watch has a band that is made out of either leather or metal.
#3 So ditch the plastic one and get a new one with all the digital razzmatazz that comes with a watch or a simple mature one will do the trick as well.
#2
Jacket Joe
A good-fitted jacket is a must-have in your closet. Get one that suits your style best and let it be mid-weight. It shouldn’t be something that is too bulky for your frame and drowns you or something that borders on effeminate. So take your pick from the shelves and add it to your coat rack.
#1
Belted
#5
The cost is immaterial here. Wearing your trousers without a belt is blasphemous. It just cannot be done and it does not look right, so own two belts, one in a black and one in a brown. They go down well with almost all the colours and cinch an outfit perfectly.
#4
Sporty shoes
#6
Running shoes are comfortable and look stylish at the same time. They also add a splash of colour to an outfit. Any running shoes from the plethora of brands available will be a great investment. They also come in a variety of materials, colours and styles, so pick one that suits your personality.
Waistcoat wonder
It may not be your style at the moment but you never know when it does become a sartorial must. Add it to a pair of denims and a casual shirt or leave it for the formal occasions, a waistcoat looks natty on any man and won’t do you any harm owning one.
Sombre satchels
Usually men have bags that are too casual, too briefcase-y, too sporty or one that can easily be carried by his girlfriend/wife. The manly satchel puts all these issues to rest. Get a nice one in rich-brown leather or canvas and it should be hefty enough so as to never be mistaken for a handbag.
Pocket squares
Pocket squares may not figure in your list of essentials, but much like the bow-tie, it can add style to your ensemble in a jiffy. There are light and lean ones available to choose from and theses look great with a blazer or a well-fitted jacket.

Children’s fashion is serious business. Huge retail chains, the biggest names in prÊt and famous design houses are creating collections aimed just at fashion for children. Shruti Tomar shares winter trends to keep the little ones bang on trend

Hue cues – There is no limit to the colours that comprise kids apparel. The colours that have emerged as winners of the coming season are categorized style wise. For the little men, unreserved and uninhabited shades of taupe and dark grey are in the spotlight for cable knits. Bold edges for jackets and outerwear are highlighted with faded olive and mauve shades. Misty as well as navy blue and light green symbolic of school uniforms and tutelage accentuate basic knit fabrics. To pair with khakis, turquoise and light blue have sprung up as season favourites. For the little ladies, shades of purple and bold hues of pink blend with snowy white skirts or denims. Coral and green have also climbed the charts hastily this winter. In woollen wear, jade and magenta are paving the way while elements of burnt orange and emerald in their apparel is sure to keep them on trend.

Hat tricks – Don’t hold back on getting your kids hats of all sizes and colours. Along with keeping them warm, they look adorable and add that dash of style to their ensembles. With so many options, you are spoilt for choice. Also, you don’t have to stick to a certain jaded style. It could be fur, wool, knitted ones with huge prints, appliquéd, floral prints, animal prints, bright colours, there’s enough to pick out from. Knits and knots – Knits are going to be very popular for the coming season. Make sure you stock up on a variety of jumpers, cardigans and sweaters for them. Free knit especially is trending at the moment. Cable knits, rhombs, stripes, cones, ribbed, spoil your kids!
Stop matching everything Try combining garments of contrasting colours for your children, as it is the latest fad in kids’ fashion. It really is not God’s law to match everything your child wears from top to bottom. When putting an outfit together for them, don’t stick to one colour palette. Instead, pick out one accent or one bold element in an outfit or a look and construct the whole ensemble around that in contrasting colours, prints, textures. Pick two bold colours and use them to create an outfit that will make your kid stand out as the most stylish of them all.

The BB
Boom
What’s the brouhaha about BB creams? Shruti Tomar expands on the ultimate all-in-one product that is taking the beauty world by rage
48
nov-dec 13
F
irst off, BB stands for Blemish Balm. One wonders what the entire buzz behind these beauty balms is. BB creams or beauty balms help streamline your complete beauty routine while saving up on counter space and money. One of the hottest trends to have consumed the beauty business, this cream is also being hailed as the miracle cream. Why, you ask; because this versatile skincare product and makeup hybrid pledges to take on the task of five to six tubes and jars that take up space on your dressing table. It has a moisturizer, primer, sunscreen, skin treatment, foundation and concealer all rolled into one tube! It is, on its way, if not already, the only product you will need after you wash your face.
What is BB cream?
The first version of BB cream was created in the 1950s by a German dermatologist for her patients after she completed skin treatments as post care. The cream was developed to work as a soothing balm while also disguising the redness with its tinted colour. The BB cream is a combination of a moisturizer, primer, sunscreen, foundation and an anti-ageing cream, thus
making it the ultimate one-in-all. This miracle cream provides strong sun protection, prevents acne, camouflages imperfections, and has antiaging, skin soothing properties. They also prime the skin and prevent shine. The question that comes to mind is that can one cream do it all? Maybe. One will have to try them to find out.
BB benefits
Every cosmetic brand worth its salt has a BB cream. It has been developed with a broad spectrum protection and is the perfect cream for a busy woman who does not have the time to slather on a variety of products before her day begins. The BB cream replaces a multitude of products like a serum and foundation as well. It can also be worn as a tinted moisturiser or as your usual foundation cream over your moisturiser or under your powder. It depends on the amount of coverage you are looking at. Truly, the jack-of-all-trades is the BB cream with SPF and it provides good colour coverage. A dot-sized dab is enough for the right coverage on a casual day.
lightening, hydration, sun protection, disguising flaws, blemishes and dark spots and so many more. It is a cream that can be applied daily for radiant skin and a dewy look. It is a light cream and on application, is easily soaked by the skin resulting in a flawless and matte finish look. Dark circles, under-eye bags and age blemishes are reduced and wrinkles vanish.
The limitations…
With all its benefits and with it being hailed as the miracle cream, one could also find disappointment as it isn’t suited to all skin types necessarily. For e.g. a BB cream may not be suited to humid climates or oily skin types. The BB cream does offer good sun protection and coverage but they may not be as effective as moisturizers. It can be difficult to throw so many functions into one basket and end up with a light texture. The BB cream does tend to be heavier and thicker than most tinted moisturizers. Also, finding the perfect BB cream to match your skin tone can be a task.
What it does…
The BB cream has several benefits like skin

VAMP IT UP This may seemed pulled straight out of the Twilight series, but vampy, wine tones are inescapable! Blotted, stained or the full pout, work this nouveau-goth look the right way. Shruti Tomar tells you more

ampy, Gothic, wine-stained, dark, moody; call it what you will, but this lip trend is a huge hit this season. Spotted on fashion runways across the globe at Fendi, Miu Miu, Lanvin, Vera Wang, Zac Posen, Christian Dior and Prada, these stunning deep Bordeaux lip colours are finally hitting store shelves, giving you an array of shades from burgundy to deep red and blackened plum. This may seem like an unapproachable trend at first, but it is not! Terribly easy to pull off, the wine-stained lips are a nobrainer and there is a look for all occasions. Several celebrities have already test-driven this look and here’s the cue for you to follow pronto.
a slightly diffused look and yet stand out. Lightly dab and work the colour into your lips while concentrating the colour at the centre of your lips for a lovely gradient semistain. For a dramatic pout, you could line your lips and carefully paint the colour on and you’ll look like a starlet out of the 1920s! For that perfect vintage-inspired femme fatale look, try the worn-in Gothic lip. Blot away and press your lips together to create a soft dewy yet deeply stained surface. Keep your lips lush in harsh winter weather with rich, hydrating lip glosses. Layer over lipsticks for depth and shine or wear on its own for a sweet berry mouth. Apply it over a nude lip base, gently blending outwards, for a simple, sprightly look.
High-drama palette
Keep the rest of the makeup minimal and maximize on the lips. Keep your eyes and skin as natural as possible. Always choose a berry or a wine shade that is best suited to your skin-tone and you are comfortable with. This look can go from being very bold to also a softer and more natural look. For the more subdued look, work the colour into the centre of your lips and pat outwards to make a stain. A matte powdered finish also looks great but if the feel is dry and grainy, keep some lip gloss handy.
Stick to the colours that suit your skin tone. As our wardrobes becomes richer around this time of the year, so does our makeup palette and the palette reads velvet mattes, semi-stains and opaque hues with a light gloss in deep red and wine shades. Cool berry, warm orange-toned bright red, plumtoned wine, deep warm burgundy, browntoned berry, deep aubergine, blackened red and berry wine are the colours to look out for to pull off this trend. This look is a standalone look meaning that all else needs to be toned down in terms of your makeup. Inspired by the vintage ladylike style to the well-dressed rebellion of the ‘90s punk and Goth, this look is complete drama with no place for much else. It has become the most wearable trend to be scrapped off the runways this season.
Work it
The easiest way to pull this look off is to apply your lipstick straight from the tube, blot it, reapply it and blot it again. It will lend

Wine stained lips have clearly taken everyone by storm this autumn-winter. Spotted not only on a slew of runway shows, including Bottega Veneta, Gucci and Rochas and all over the recently-concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, even celebs have made it their own on the red carpet. Most women would keep their face neutral, making the bold lip look the statement piece. But there are other ways to flaunt it too.

Do it like the stars
First, decide which colour range suits your skin tone and if you want a creamy texture, gloss or matte. Wine shades come in every form, so just find a product that you feel the most comfortable in, since it is a bold hue to take on. Secondly, moisturise, moisturise and moisturise! The biggest key to wearing a strong lip colour is to have a healthy set of lips. Wine is very wearable and is one of easiest colours to pull off. The best is to keep is a little subdued with blotting and layering. Also, try outlining your lips with a dark brown or wine lip-pencil and fill in with your favourite red or plum. As three-dimensional lips are in this season, this trend will help you rock. (See box on right) Take note of these steps to get the best out of this trend. Start out light. If you are trying it the first time, you want to use a sheerer version like
Super-dark wine lips: Keep your eyes clean with a nude shadow and mascara. To make the colour look worn-in and vintage, apply the lipstick with fingers and then blot.
52
nov-dec 13
Natural berry: This looks good on lighter skin tones. Layer it on for the darkest effect.
Maroon or burgundy: This shade complements the Indian olive skin shade. Stay close to redder stains and steer clear of browns. Opt for fruity dark colour.
Dark plum: Dark skin can pull off these shades beautifully. Try blackberry and darker plums to set off your skin tone. The darker your skin, the better you will look with glossy lipsticks
The new red
If plum is too bold for you, try staining with a red shade. Use the darker colour to add some depth to your lips.
brushing a light translucent powder on your lips that will help hold it all together. Layer with different shades. For a more dramatic effect, use different shades of the same colour. Take a lip brush and mix a slightly lighter hue in the same colour family. Use this as your base to the centre of both lips for a more ombre feel. Images: MAC
a tinted lip balm. Look for a product that is lightweight, semi-glossy and moisturizing. Prep your lips. Dark lips have the tendency to highlight dry and rough lips so, it is imperative to exfoliate and moisturize before trying this trend. Use a lip scrub and get rid of any dry and flaky skin before applying. Remember moisturized lips carry this trend beautifully and with the onset of winters, it is even more important to keep your lips hydrated. Avoid overdoing it. With this look, your lips are the focal point. This is a dramatic look and can tend to look over the top if you combine it with dramatic eyes and blush. So, it is best paired with a soft, neutral eye topped with a few coats of mascara. These coats of mascara will help highlight your eyes without being over dramatic. Use a lip pencil. This will help avoid your colour from bleeding through the day. Line your lips with a lip pencil prior to application of the first coat of lipstick. You could also try
Use a darker or black lip-liner to outline and fill in with a contrast shade. Here (above), MAC Vino is being used to outline and a MAC Ruby Woo to fill in. Magenta lip liner with MAC’s Mehr lipstick or Plum liner with Rebel lipstick will look great too. Leave the dark liner showing at the edges for a plumper look or along the V of the lips.

KNOW THE COLOUR It’s the trend that is taking the fall season by storm. The winestained lip has been spotted on runways and red carpets across the globe. Colours ranging from aubergine to deep berry sashayed down the catwalks of Gucci, Rochas and Bottega Veneta. What’s more this trend is extremely wearable and there’s a shade to suit all skin tones. The
trick, though, is to experiment with shades and layering to see what suits you the best. Those on the fairer side could go in for a glossy mulberry, deep red or rich hues. For those who have a medium skin tone or olive complexions, try a red-based maroon shade. Ladies with dark tones can work this trend really well by going into blue-purples.
Keep the rest of your makeup minimal and flawless while allowing your lips to take all the attention. Use a light eye shadow, mascara, a light blush and make sure your lips are well-hydrated. Cracked lips do not look good when pulling off a dark shade of lipstick. So work that Merlot and flaunt your winehued lips with aplomb.

A
bandon the boring ways of wearing your hair, instead try newer, chic-er do’s that will make you look like a million bucks! Big hair is the way to go this season. For your evening festivities, chignons, plaits, glamourous curls or slickly pulled back hair will look great while for high volume and large hairdos are right on trend.
Chignon’s a mess The chignon is an elegant hair do that usually connotes a graceful evening where one crosses all their Ts and dots all the Is but give the perfect chignon a twist this season and mess it up. It’s easier to do and look trés fashionable. Elegance just got messy.
HOW TO GET THE LOOK Pull your hair back softly in to a ponytail at the centre of the head at the back. Back comb the ponytail with a wide-toothed comb. Grab some pins and grips and set the lengths of your ponytail back into the base, creating a graceful mess of it all. To try a variation, pin it all to one side to create an asymmetrical style that bang on trend. Let the front be natural or softly curled.

Cutesy plaits
HOW TO GET THE LOOK Use a smoothening shampoo first. Now, take a flattening spray and blow-dry your hair smoothly to make sure that your tresses are free of any tangles. Allow a few strands to go astray at the front and then part the rest of your hair deep to one side and begin plaiting your hair from either side of the parting. For texture, you could try the French plait method and secure on the head. Take each plait to the back of your head until they meet at your nape. Pull the ends into a messy bun. Fix it with some hairstyling spray.

Plaits have been around forever but they keep reinventing themselves ever so often that one simply does not tire of this hairstyle. What with the festive season swinging in, pretty plaits come to the rescue as an easy to do and perfect for every occasion hairdo. Also, they can be taken out to showoff a wavy locks look as an alternative.
Retro tresses
HOW TO GET THE LOOK Get hold of some volume cream and apply into damp hair. Scrunch your hair dry like they did it back in the 1980s. Throw your hair upside down and scrunch it so as to get oodles of volume into it. Once it is dry, back comb the roots and twist it at the back. Pin this into a loosely held French plait. You could wrap a rolled up headscarf and tuck it behind your ears, over the crown and make a knot on one side. Leave the fringe out for a really retro feel.

Retro is making a comeback and who doesn’t love a spot of old and gold in their lives, more so in their hairstyles. Vintage updos are great for a stylish brunch and also to camouflage oily locks.

Egyptian Koshary
This Egyptian classic is a carb-on-carb delight that includes all of our favourite staples: rice, lentils, chickpeas and macaroni. Together. Yes, that’s right. If you thought it couldn’t get any better, it just did, thanks to Egypt. Here’s a recipe from Ghalia Mahmoud, Egypt’s cook of the revolution. Servings: 6 Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups white rice 3 cups water 1 package elbow macaroni 5 onions chopped 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup French lentils, soaked in water overnight 1 3/4 cup garbanzo beans. If using dry garbanzo beans, soak overnight 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon allspice 2 tablespoons vinegar 3/4 cup tomato paste Salt Pepper
1
1. After soaking the lentils overnight, rinse well
a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook uncovered to an al dente bite. Drain well in a colander. Return the macaroni to the empty pot and cover to keep warm. 3. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet and add the chopped onion. Cook over medium heat until the onion begins to brown, then add the garlic and continue to cook for another minute. 4. After the onion has browned, remove 3
of black pepper, 2 1/2 teaspoons salt, cumin, cayenne and red pepper flakes. 7. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer about 12 minutes. Keep half a cup of boiling water on hand while cooking and add as much as needed along the way so that you end up with saucelike consistency. 8. If using dry garbanzo beans, drain (after soaking overnight) and boil for one hour with
under cold water. Bring four cups of water to a boil and add the lentils. Boil for 5 minutes then add the rice. Cover and allow to simmer on low heat for about half an hour or until the rice is cooked. Set aside. 2. Fill a large pot with salted water and bring to
tablespoons of garlic-onion mixture and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Reserve this for the garnish 5. Mix in the vinegar with the rest of the mixture in the pot. 6. Add the spices, tomato paste, 1 teaspoon
4 cups of water. If using canned beans, then rinse them thoroughly. 9. Serve by placing a spoonful of rice, then macaroni, then lentils, followed by the garbanzo beans. Top the dish with the tomato sauce and garnish with fried onion.

in the oven for 1 hour, until tender when pierced with a knife. Cool until they are manageable, and then peel them, discarding the skins. 2. Combine 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a medium skillet and set over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté for about a minute. Add the sugar and the vinegar and continue to sauté for about 4 minutes, until the onions begin to caramelize and are completely soft. 3. Add the jalapeño and continue to sauté 1 more minute. Remove from the heat and reserve. 4. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to a sauté pan and sauté the cabbage until it wilts, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 5. Mash the potatoes with the roasted garlic and remaining butter. While the potatoes are still hot, stir in the cheese, onion, poblano and the cabbage. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
For the taco shells: 1. Pour enough oil in a 10-inch sauté pan to a little more than cover the bottom of the pan. Get the oil hot over a medium-high heat. When it is hot place a tortilla shell in the pan and let it crisp for about 5 seconds. 2. With a tongs flip the tortilla over to cook the other side (about 5 more seconds). This softens the shells just enough. 3. Now with the tongs flip it over again, bend the tortilla into a taco shape and hold for 7 seconds. When it is crisp turn it over to crisp the other side for about 7 seconds. 4. Place a generous amount of potato filling in each tortilla and serve with your favourite salsa.

Cook about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until very tender but not browned. Season lightly with salt. 3. Raise heat to medium and add rice. Cook, stirring well, until heated through. Season to taste with salt. 4. In a nonstick skillet, fry eggs in remaining oil, sunny-side-up, until edges are set but yolk is still runny. 5. Divide rice among four dishes. What is your personal style statement? I am a traditional person at heart, so I prefer to keep things elegant. I do not believe in following fashion trends blindly. In fact, I have always broken style norms to do things that I like. Your diet has been talked about ever since your size-zero rage. Do you really follow a strict regime? Not at all! I am a typical Punjabi Kapoor girl who loves her food. In fact, I do not believe in fasting even during Karva-chauth since I feel
starving is not the way to show your love for your beloved or attain a fab figure. Anything that you consider evergreen when it comes to fashion? I feel jewellery always makes a fashion statement and you simply cannot go wrong with it. I used my first pay cheque to buy diamonds! Has Saif (Saif Ali Khan) gifted you anything special? I do not recall all his gifts right now but jewellery as a gift from your husband makes men feel proud and women happy. Do you also shop a lot yourself? Women love shopping and I am no different. In fact, these days I shop a lot online. I can even buy footwear online even if it is something one must try before purchasing.

Sixth anniversary Select CITYWALK turned six this year! A whole week of celebrations commemorated this hallmark achievement. Everyone was invited to shopping centre’s ‘Turns Six In The City’ festivities. There were daily lucky draws, special anniversary memorabilia, rewards offer and so much more. Adding to all the fun, stores ran individual activities like Colours in the City by The Colour Factory, Lipsticks in the City by Inglot and Gadgets in the City by Croma. There was a magnificent ice sculpture that was created to mark the anniversary. Drinks were served here by Spaghetti Kitchen.

Fall In Love
WITH LIP-SMACKING
COLOUR
Introducing New Colour Crush™ Lipstick
Fall in love with lip smacking colour with new Colour Crush™ Lipstick, our new, super nourishing lipstick collection made from the finest quality crushed pigments. From red-carpet reds, to flirty pinks, to au natural nudes, each cutting-edge lip colour is 100% cruelty free, 100% vegetarian and 100% high impact.
Lust - Have Lip Colour
Our new Colour Crush™ Lipstick collection is an on-trend palette of 24 brilliantly vibrant shades of lipstick, each delivering maximum colour impact. The fashion-forward line-up is available in three colour families; the brightest reds, the sweetest pinks and the finest nudes, in a mix of pure colour and subtle shimmer finishes. Whatever your style, whatever your skin tone, it’s time to reveal your true colours...
Crush On You
Our Colour Crush™ Lipstick collection marries our most intense, full-on colours with luscious moisture. Our secret? We’ve travelled the world to source high-quality pigments, which we’ve finely crushed then blended with a drop of nurturing cherry seed oil and coated with our finest, silkiest Community Fair Trade marula oil. The result is vivid, wow-worthy colour that glides onto lips and feels mega-comfortable to wear. What’s more, each lipstick has a sophisticated delicate floral rose fragrance. Divine!
Three Colour Families
With so many hot hues to choose from, you can re-invent your lip-look every day. We love the flame-red drama of Red Siren 101, a bold and beautiful crimson that adds a touch of Hollywood glamour. We think our pink and violet shades are to-die-for; try Red Hot Raspberry 201 for a fierce fuchsia that packs a punch. And for easy-to-wear elegance, slick on a beautiful beige; one of our favourites is Coral Kiss 315, a shimmering peachy nude.
The Heart Inside
Our Colour Crush™ Lipstick collection benefit from Community Fair Trade marula oil made from the ripe fruit of the sacred marula tree. We source it from the Eudafano Women’s Co-Operative, which is helping 1750 women to earn a fair income. The women involved in the project report that the benefits to them go beyond money, it also helps give them a sense of independence, business management and confidence.
